When we last left you, Darby, you reluctantly decided to enact this ritual to allow the goat man to come into your presence. He tells you of great darkness infest this land and it craves death and it's his fault. But he can now help you. It worked. He was here.
Starting point is 00:02:00 What? Where? He was right here, but he's good. We can cleanse this land. Look, this is proof. He He has given me a location in my mind where I can find a tool to help us. What? The key is where the water lies still and the water no longer gives life but drinks death instead. The well?
Starting point is 00:02:19 In the back of the house? Yeah. Let's go to the well. The four of you selffully creep through the house and you run up to the big bay windows and all four of you make a mad dash for the well. The question is, it's only big enough for one person to go
Starting point is 00:02:36 I'm sorry I didn't believe it. I told you that I was in love with you. I meant I still am. Come back. You hear a thud as the bucket hits the bottom of the well and you see more bodies. It's a sticky quagmire of gore. And you have to reach into it.
Starting point is 00:02:56 Lurby, as you fish around, you see these pictographs that seem to be carved into these stones. Jeremy? Can you hear me? Yeah. Try, I have three numbers, zero, four, and 26. I don't know what order they go in. It's a bowl and a little book.
Starting point is 00:03:13 Sat as you open the book and attempt to read the pictographs that are inside of it, you can gleam at least some kind of recognition of what each one may be. What was in the book? What is in the book indeed? Welcome back to the final episode of Dread. You four have managed to make it this.
Starting point is 00:04:14 this far. And through sheer will, determination, and a little blood, you've managed to get the key to whatever this land is being plagued by. Sat, you stared at the small book that had the pictograms of what is deciphered inside of there. And you were able to tell that something in this clue holds the key to the path
Starting point is 00:04:44 past the present and the future of this land. Also in the world is the darkness. That's as much as you were able to put together and glean as part of this. At the same time, you're still in this middle of a gazebo out in the midst of the garden of this grand Victorian mansion with the undead who seem to be constantly vigilant as if they're waiting for someone
Starting point is 00:05:12 or something to come and rip away. the secret of this world's fate. What do you wish to do? Past, present, future, darkness. If this is a thing, maybe something about today's, the day that we can actually fold time and maybe we can bring him back and then seal the whole thing and then make this stupid situation go away.
Starting point is 00:05:38 Yeah, what was communicated to me was that the blight would be purged, But the last ritual we have to do is at the top of a mountain that I can see in my head, but... Where is it? But first, you have to get out of this gazebo. Wait, wait, wait. Okay. Just in case... You don't make it out of here.
Starting point is 00:06:00 It's a possibility. What is this and what is this stupid ritual? That will be made clear once we get to the location, but yes, that's a good plan I might not make it out. So we'll... So we have to protect you. No. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:16 Yeah. I guess so. Lucky you. Darby, you can go through the way that you originally came with your group. You did crawl through the window into the house. Or you could go around. But there are dead there too.
Starting point is 00:06:35 There was a hidden path when Tanner and I went to go to look for the dark room. It was overgrown, almost impossible to see, but it was definitely a path. leading up. What's the fastest way? Through the back of the garden or through the house? Through the back of the garden.
Starting point is 00:06:54 I got a dumb plan. Okay. Caden, what's your dumb plan? 26. Actually, no. Zero. I'm gonna throw a rock at the house and see if the sound attracts them.
Starting point is 00:07:16 And we run the other way from the gazebo once they start swarming the house. The window? Yeah. I was gonna make you pull for it, but that sounds wonderful. Throw the rock, Caden. Get it! You hear as it crashes against the side of the building,
Starting point is 00:07:34 and glass splinters as it rocks along the side. And you watch as they run straight for the house. Full board, full bullet. Go! And you come across. come across the side. You go along the 60 foot side wing and double around the side.
Starting point is 00:07:54 The bushes on this side of the house were not kept in the way that the open garden or even the front was, so there are brambles and tears and smalls amount of sticks that rub and grate against your skin. It's nothing compared to what you've been through at this point. So you push it all away, hands bleeding,
Starting point is 00:08:11 and arms gashed butts. You push through the other side of the house and bolt straight through the wood. And as you perth through the woods, you hear nothing. It seems so much that this journey is coming to an end. You're gonna go up there, you're gonna perform the ritual, and you're gonna cleanse this land. And it will be easy.
Starting point is 00:08:39 What are you thinking right now, Raina? I'm so relieved to have some end in sight. I'm so glad you're still here, but I feel so guilty for letting Tanner die. or die. So I just really need this to work. And I don't really believe it's going to bring him back, but if there's a chance, that that would be great. We have to. And in the meantime, I'm never handing somebody else a danger that can be mine again. Darby, where are you at at this climax of an entire year's worth of work? Well, the main feeling is complete validation. that I did it, that I was right, that I wasn't crazy,
Starting point is 00:09:26 that I ditched all of my self-doubt and mood disorders and everything to lean into this fucked up purpose and it finally seemed to, you know, work out for once in my life. And I only half believed in myself, but even that half belief paid off. And I feel guilty that it seems that I, I'm the only vessel and like Sat said that they might have to protect me and but I have a feeling that I'm I'm on my way out anyway like if I can't bring Tanner back Sat's gonna get me if I if I don't succeed the goat shaman's gonna get me I I just I just want to fulfill this task
Starting point is 00:10:09 You have a lot of enemies right now for sure but you do also have a purpose Yes, it seems clear what that is at the moment and at the moment the goat shaman seems good Caden, did you think you were going to survive this long? Did you think you were actually going to make it? None of my expectations have been met. I can't believe we've made it this far. I can't believe so many of us have made it this far. I have to keep them safe.
Starting point is 00:10:38 I don't trust this. Somebody has to be paying attention. Somebody has to be there for when everything goes horribly, horribly wrong. horribly, horribly wrong. And I need them all to be okay. That's very, very selfless for someone who started this whole journey with a desire to say fuck you to the world and everyone around them.
Starting point is 00:11:09 What's changed? I don't think anything changed. I think, I don't think I really understood why I was here. I think I was lying. I think I only didn't think, understood part of it. I wanted to be worth something, and the only thing I knew that was worth anything was them.
Starting point is 00:11:35 So I found some meaning again. And that meeting is right here, as you're walking with this group of friends towards the final destination, the final challenge in front of you. Sat, Tanner's death seems to have shaken you up more than anyone here. here. What's going on?
Starting point is 00:11:57 I am so mad at everybody. They left me alone and I actually inside feel like they deserve this chaos. But Tanner didn't need to die. None of them need to die. And I just kind of wanted to shake them up a little bit. I just have so much I need to say to all them. to all them. Man, Tanner.
Starting point is 00:12:29 As you sit looking at your hands, thinking about just how much Tanner meant to you, and now that he is gone, it's hard to focus on anything else other than the emotions that are racking through you at this moment and the sheer amount of dread that you feel about the people around you. To simultaneously hate them and at the same time validate their pain. Make a pull. Greetings adventurers. Spring has sprung here in Los Angeles, and that means it's a brief period where it's only 75 degrees instead of 95 degrees.
Starting point is 00:13:18 I'll take it. And that means I've been outside a lot more. Walking around, occasionally galloping after a toddler hopped up on juice boxes, traveling a bit, you know the vibe. And after doing some spring cleaning, my wardrobe, I gotta say, looking a little bit sad. I want clothes that can keep up with me, and my son, but updating my wardrobe every spring sounds pretty expensive.
Starting point is 00:13:40 So that's why I wound up signing up for Fabletics as a VIP. It let me overhaul my springtime outfits without obliterating my bank account. New VIPs unlock major savings on that first purchase, so trying new fits feels way more doable. When I signed up as a new VIP with Fabletics, I got 70 to 80% off everything. It made it easy to grab a few new pieces without overthinking it. And the quality really surprised me. Everything feels premium and soft and breathable, but you're not paying those premium prices.
Starting point is 00:14:10 What I like most, though, is how versatile everything is. You've got stuff you can work out in, but also wear out. There's matching sets, lightweight hoodies, joggers, teas, you name it. The kind of stuff you can throw on in the morning and not worry about later. When I'm at home, my favorite thing to pull on is the oversized hoodie. It's so comfy I could just live in it 24-7. It's perfect for walking my dog on like a chilly night. But what I'm out and about, I've really been loving the ribbed Johnny Collar
Starting point is 00:14:35 polo. It makes me look like I should be taking a high-powered meeting by the pool at the White Lotus, but hopefully with less murder involved. I don't know. It's insanely comfortable. I highly recommend it. So shop now at fabletics.com slash critical role to get 70 to 80% off everything when you sign up as a new VIP. Take a quick style quiz and be sure to select critical role when prompted to unlock your 70 to 80% off. This is a limited time offer, so don't wait. Again, that's fabletics.com slash critical role for 72. 80% off everything as a new VIP. And now, on to the show. Greetings, adventurers. Lately, I've been getting a bit more intentional about what I wear
Starting point is 00:15:16 from day to day, because instead of just falling out of whatever laundry baskets nearby, I've been leaning into pieces that feel easy and comfortable, but still put together, because it just makes getting dressed simpler when I have a plan. Quince has been my go-to to help with that, because the fabrics feel elevated, the fits are clean, and everything just works without me needing to overthink it. And Quintz has all the wardrobe staples you need for spring. Think 100% European linen shorts and shirts from just $34. They're lightweight, they're breathable, they're comfortable, your legs and torso will thank you and you will still look put together. And clean 100% Pima Cotton Tees with a softness. Well, you got to feel that to believe
Starting point is 00:15:56 it, believe you me. Their pants also hit that same balance. They're relaxed, they're comfortable, but still polished enough to wear basically anywhere. And everything's priced between 50 and 80s. percent less than what you'd find at similar brands. Quince works directly with ethical factories and cuts out the middlemen so you're getting premium materials without the markup. And since spring is here in Los Angeles, a brief period where it's 75 degrees instead of 95 degrees, I spruced up my wardrobe with a pair of the comfort stretch traveler five pocket pants and the heritage washed denim shirt. Not only do they feel great, but I unequivocally look good as hell while wearing them. That's just science.

In the midst of the silence as you're walking, contemplating everything that happened up to this point, You are amazed at just how much of the outside world you're able to tune out.
Starting point is 00:17:15 And so it comes as a surprise to you when you hear the sound of a motor. As if someone is going to mow the lawn. It's a small, distinct sound. And you watch as a steel-bladed chain. And you watch as a steel-bladed chainsaw comes down and misses you ever so slightly as it cleaves off three or four branches night on the side of you.
Starting point is 00:17:51 And Simon is sitting there, and he throws himself down upon right where you were feeling the steel-cut blades of the chainsaw as it digs into the tree trunk. I pushed my friends forward, out of the way so that they don't get hurt. And you run. Well, I'm presuming that you run.
Starting point is 00:18:17 Yes. And you feel the heat and the fumes. You can smell the gasoline of this small motor. As he pulls it out of the tree trunk, and you run. And you run. Do I know where I'm going? Yes, you do.
Starting point is 00:18:36 Okay. You run. I'm in the leave then. As you keep moving, and it's only a small out of time before you break into the clearing as you hear the chainsaw literally 15 to 20 feet behind you as Simon continues to as he continues to wield his chainsaw to and fro to and throw and and there is an opportunity here to use the cabin if you wish or you can continue to push on through towards the hiking trail itself and get up to where that medicine wheel is
Starting point is 00:19:10 but you'll be having a crazed psychopath chasing you the entire way. I just don't think that doing a ritual for healing with a man who represents death is wise. Oh, I think he's going to kill us if we don't run. What do I see when I look at the cabin? A disheveled pile of wooden rubble. Is there anything heavy and large? Oh, my gosh. What am I thinking?
Starting point is 00:19:34 Is there anything big and metal-like, perhaps, that I can pick up? There's heavy wooden things. It's a wooden cabin. Fuck it. I've got a set of brass knuckles in my pocket. All right. I'm gonna hop, well, I'm gonna look at you. Let me say stop being so fucking selfish.
Starting point is 00:19:57 I'm gonna bounce off a tree, turn around, just smack, I'm a square in the fucking teeth. Put one right in him, Caden. Make a pull. Caden, as you look towards everyone, and you turn to sat. And you make this declaration of stop being so fucking selfish. You pull this pair of brass knuckles right out
Starting point is 00:20:19 from the midst of your bag and you, in a beautiful fleeting moment. Is there any way I can help him? Can I mean, is it a thing? That is not how the game works, Sat. Sat, this is something that Caden is owning. He did this. He looked at you and he made this declaration.
Starting point is 00:20:40 as he pulled these knuckles out of his bag, and he looked at you, and you need to interpret what he says based on what you think is best. Oh, this is not cool. Now, Caden, he's in it. He is in it, and he has lifted his hand up, and he has kicked his foot off of the side of that tree, and he is throwing himself straight into Simon,
Starting point is 00:21:07 who is wielding an eight-pound chainsaw. Keep hitting. till his fucking paste. Keep hitting him till he's fucking paste. Hayden, you bounce off that tree, and you break into him, and you watch as his body falls down to the ground, and you sit over him, prone, and you hold his head in your hand,
Starting point is 00:21:48 and you just wail on him over and over and over. You look at the bloody, disheveled face, with the engine. Still running. Hit the off switch. Wait, wait, wait. As he seems still, as almost as he's sleeping. How much of the head does he have left?
Starting point is 00:22:21 Still quite a bit. Curb stomp right onto the middle of Simple Simon's head as you feel it squish like a melon underneath you. And gore and brain matters, splatters in front of you everywhere. Part. Yes. Do it.
Starting point is 00:22:39 I'm gonna cut the heart out. You died in his chest. And oh, Caden, if you didn't know what it was to burst through a rib cage, you would now. You pull and you crack open ribs as you gut in there and you feel your hands dripping and pulsing with this man's lifeblood, which is still beating. Pull the thing out and you throw it.
Starting point is 00:23:10 It bounces unceremoniously off the side of a tree. Is this still beating? No. Well done. Sorry. I grabbed the chainsaw. You grab the chainsaw. You hold onto it.
Starting point is 00:23:35 We can't save him. Just us. Okay? Just us. We just saw crazy things. I don't care. Anything is possible. I need you to say just us.
Starting point is 00:23:52 I can't. I just three more. Just get three more out. Three more out. We need to get three more out. We each get three more out, okay? Yeah. Three more.
Starting point is 00:24:12 Fine. It's it okay. I missed you. I'm so sorry. You guys are always fighting. It's so stupid. Why couldn't you just be nice to him? I can't be nice to anybody.
Starting point is 00:24:38 You're nice to me. No, I'm not. Once. The rest of the walk is pretty uneventful, truth be told. In fact, a lot of this. Before we get too far out of the clearing, let me take a picture. As I said, the rest of the walk is pretty uneventful.
Starting point is 00:25:09 You get up to the top of the mesa after clearing lots of underbrush and footage, and you wind your way slowly up to the top of the mesa. That overlooks the rest of the mesa. Black Mountain. It's starting to get dark. You haven't lost the light, but it is waning and the end of the day is coming. And the first thing you notice when you get to the top of the mesa is actually not what's laying on the floor, but the city lights that are not more than 50, 60 miles away maybe. And you are amazed at just how close close civilization could be and have all of this happen right underneath its nose.
Starting point is 00:26:00 Expedia, you're here. But are you here, here? You go to Hawaii in your head all the time. During meetings, in the car, Hawaii is on the mind. Starting point is 00:26:49 at Ali.com. That's OLLLY.com. As all four of you gaze into the skyline together, you turn and look to see any clearing embedded at the very top is a flat piece of land with colored rocks, white, copper and gray, laid out in front of you in a beautiful medicine wheel. What do you want to do?
Starting point is 00:27:27 Paper. Paper. Paper. This is it. This is the medicine wheel. Do we just draw it? Yeah. Uh, you know the ritual, so ritual us.
Starting point is 00:27:43 There's a whistle and there's a leathered ornament. Talisman? What if we do the past, the present, the future, and an empty circle? For light? For light. What goes in the middle? The bowl? I guess then we, yeah, we blow the whistle. I mean, the bull must be there for a reason.
Starting point is 00:28:07 We could each put a drop of our blood into the bowl. That is a lot. That's a lot of what rituals are, especially when you're dealing with the occult. The book doesn't say anything else. Covered in other people's blood. It might be a little difficult to distinguish. Which way is north? You are currently looking out to the north side of the mountain
Starting point is 00:28:29 towards the Mesa, which would mean that the skyline in front of you, this quadrant would be facing the as above. So which one of these should go north? The present. Future. Future? Future? Future is in front of us. Pass is behind us.
Starting point is 00:28:49 Okay. Darkness is on our left. So? The present to our right. Maybe. Okay. Yeah. Do future north.
Starting point is 00:28:59 I think. Like that? That's what I think. See, I'm still an artist. Are we blood? It's close. Darby, you feel it's close, but there's something wrong. What?
Starting point is 00:29:43 It's not right. Is it not pointed the right way? I don't know exactly what it is. Should we wipe them out? Yeah. Okay, so... Maybe we use this as a... the darkness or the light. Okay. That's pretty cool. Maybe just shift it one over so that that's,
Starting point is 00:30:07 what was that before? That was the past before. No, that was the future. That was the future before. So I want to rotate it? No, no, no, that was that one. This is the past. And yeah, it was the past before. Oh, boy. We can make it the future if we do it this way. Oh, okay. Okay. So, you want to face that up? Darby, you hear of, you feel this intensity upon you. It's angry, it's upset. This isn't right. You were close. You were close.
Starting point is 00:30:57 There was just a small thing. I'm sorry. What is it? What is it? Is it wrong? Yes, yes. Okay, we'll do it again. He's mad at me.
Starting point is 00:31:06 What was the first one? What was the first one? What was the first one? Did he tell you what to do? No, he's not saying anything. He's just yelling at me. No. Uh, uh...
Starting point is 00:31:17 Okay, maybe we have to color it in. Maybe we have to color the darkness in. Darby, the bowl. The bowl. What are you doing with the bowl? There's nothing inside of that. And you made the same mistake again. It's not in the order.
Starting point is 00:31:33 It's not what you're doing. It's how you're drawing it. We're not doing it right. You guys, the bull is drawing it right. Tell us how to do it right. I don't know. Draw with, okay, everyone. Let's do it all at the same time and let's use our fingers.
Starting point is 00:31:52 Oh God. What? Knife. What are you doing? Darby, tell him he's being stupid right now. Stop it. I don't know. Stop it.
Starting point is 00:32:11 Look, we have plenty of things to put in the bowl. We have to put something in the bowl. Where's the whistle? Where's it put something in the bowl? Yeah. Is that what he said? Yes, repeat his words if he's talking to you. He said that, he said that,
Starting point is 00:32:24 Caden's being stupid. Okay. So no blood. Um, every, let's, let's draw it with our fingers. Okay, all right. It was four of us. Maybe we do it all at the same time. Let's do it all at the same time.
Starting point is 00:32:34 Um, so I'll go up here and you do here. Okay. I'll go here. Okay, ready? One, two, three. Starting point is 00:33:41 And you hear something. It's vague, but it's almost a chuckle. And you feel this weird, warm sense of relief. At the same time, there's this imposing and very distinct emotion of that wasn't what I met, but oh, Oh God, if it wasn't beautiful. And that voice and feeling is cut off immediately as you feel another presence bear down upon you
Starting point is 00:34:19 and you look ahead of you and see an inky black darkness begin to fold and lift around and you can hear something imposing and you three can see a congealed blackness forming around you as the shaman in your head, in your mind, in your mind, your soul and your being cries. No!
Starting point is 00:34:41 No! Not now! This isn't time! I still have time! And you see this blackness inkin form around as a giant shrouded figure comes up out of the earth and gazes with its eyeless face
Starting point is 00:35:02 towards you. And you see as crows cry off them. cry off of the side of its shroud as a blackened form wearing a dark veil is walking towards you. The circle, fill the circle in. This is close, but there's still something missing. There's one thing, the symbols are right. The intent, if not the original purpose of drawing it together all of you with your hands is good,
Starting point is 00:35:36 but there's one detail missing. And you watch as the shroud gets closer, to you when you were asking over and over, what is it, what is it? What is this last piece? But you hear nothing and all you hear is the sickening cries of a man, a beast, an animal, an anguish as it cries and bays, and cries and tear. And you look as this darkness comes. Blow the whistle.
Starting point is 00:36:09 Five, ten, Caden. You see it. dark form leap over the top of you, over the side of the medicine wheel, and you see a beastial man with long, rakeish claws and long, elongated horns coming on top of you, and you watch as he tackles the darkness, and they begin to fight, and they wrestle, as you can see inky blackness diting onto it, and this beast of a long creature just clawing and raking at it, crying a deep animal. cry as it howls into this thing. Darby, there's one thing missing to finish this ritual.
Starting point is 00:36:57 And it's in the tower. It's in the tower somewhere and you have three minutes to get it before the goat man is consumed in the darkness and all of you lose your lives and this whole world is incomplete. You have to find it. It's in there somewhere and it's the last piece of the puzzle. Oh Do we have to do this one at a time or can we all go? You can all go. You can get in there. But whoever touches it last is in there.
Starting point is 00:37:30 Oh my god. What is it say, Caden? You still have time. You still need to do this. Still the blood of those at fault. Oh my god. What is it, Darby? What does it say? I'm at fault. I'm at fault too. Go!
Starting point is 00:37:53 All of you cut your hands. as deep blood wells and fills the pool inside. And that's good. It's great. You can feel something. But there's one more. There's one more at fault. There's one more that needs to bleed.
Starting point is 00:38:17 Time is running out as the goat man continues to fall and clash and rake. I don't understand what that means. At the darkness and you hear it. As it tackles the darkness. But he's already dead. Is there any blood of his on the... I empty the camera.
Starting point is 00:38:37 You empty the camera and you watch as the film spills everywhere and it rucks all about and you watch as it hands in there and you jab the knife but there's... That's not it. That's not it. There's still someone at fault here. And there's the last bit of it. Yes, it's true. All four of you contribute it in. I take some of Simon's blood and I pat and I
Starting point is 00:38:59 You throw Simon's Gore down on there. Wait, where's the shaman? He's fighting. He's fighting Agatha and the great darkness that's of sight. And you can see her blackened form as the goat. I run at the beast. I run it at the beast. Make a pull.
Starting point is 00:39:16 Oh. No. Yes. Careful there's two coming out on the side. Please, please. Please. No, no, no, no, no. No.
Starting point is 00:39:33 As you rush towards the goat man, you hear his bestial cries as he is in agony, fighting this congealed form of pure blackness as you hear a voice rise from the great abyss. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. You cannot stop me. Okay, I lunge at the shaman. Yes. And I stab at him. and I say, you did this, and I run my hand where there's blood,
Starting point is 00:40:06 and I run back to the bowl and let some blood drip from my hand. As you reach your hand out and drip a single drop of blood into the bowl, you feel a gust of air, whoosh! Up in the middle of everything, and you feel this wind throw by you, and you can see the goat man, who is currently still entangled with this blackened form lift himself up and as the wind goes by him and you
Starting point is 00:40:41 watch as Agatha's blackened form starts to dissipate into smoke and ash as things come together and you watch as the goat man's form first turns from skin to muscle to bone and then to nothing as the wind and the light purses through you and you You see nothing. The curse has been lifted. The Mesa has been cleansed. Agatha and the goat man are no more.
Starting point is 00:41:19 There is only ash and dust in front of you as the sand and the symbols themselves are blown away in the scattered wind. And then there was only silence. And that is the end. Thus we conclude this macabre story. For you see, hope dies, passion dies, people die, but stories. Ah, stories will always live on, ghosts from the past that walk the world through words.
Starting point is 00:42:07 There will always be another story. But for now, these were the sagas of sundry. I am Mr. Wren and you, my darlings, have lived through dread.
