I'm Dan Casey.
We're gonna talk about the latest episode of Goblin Mode
in just a minute.
But joining me as always, I have my amazing
Dania Radford, Amy Borpal.
Jason Wayne.
And we have one heck of an episode to talk about.
But before we go any further,
we have to talk about the episode in detail.
We've got to get spoilery with it.
So if you haven't seen it yet, just fix your life.
Cancel your plans, your child's birthday that, you know,
Keenegro you were invited to, maybe a day at the park.
Those don't matter anymore.
They will have another birthday.
Right now, you're going to watch Goblin Mode so we can talk Goblin Mode.
Okay.
It just unhinged just unhinged that episode.
was. Folks, we got a hoist.
Oh my gosh. I, I, you know, Danny, you normally ask me, like, what did you expect to happen?
Wasn't it exactly what happened?
And there's like, I would say that what you all did to surprise me this episode was nearly everything.
Always keep them guessing.
Yeah, down to, down to, I mean,
I mean, from the moment, at the start I was like, well, it's dawn.
You have plenty of time to plan, plenty of time to recruit.
But the timeline just kept getting shorter and shorter.
You're like, screw it.
We're going to have a party at 8 a.m.
See, I was surprised as well because I thought we were delivering stuff, then leaving and coming back.
But it's, I guess.
No one left.
No.
So people kept showing up and I'm like, oh, I guess this is happening.
I guess it.
Yeah, real monster hours.
Those are monster hours.
Yeah, we had a fail.
Regular monster hours.
Demon time.
Yeah, demon time.
Demon time is all day apparently.
Yeah, monster's gonna monster.
To me, that, like, that was perfect for me.
Like, that's what I expect from, like, a group of just idiots that I'm trying to do this.
We realistically wouldn't know when a party should happen.
No, no, they wouldn't.
I mean, have they ever been to a party?
I think we've probably been to like Unzuk Day.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Well, and if you think about the logic of addiction, like, do Uzzes ever really sleep?
Do they rest?
Do, you know, I guess cobalds do, like humanoids do, but makes sense.
We just kind of contemplate.
We rest our weary bones.
Yeah, so it started off with a few scenes where we talked to some characters who I promptly forgot.
how to do their voice.
Oi!
Oi!
Which I don't regret at all.
That is part of dungeon mastering for me.
And also I didn't know that some of these
were going to come back.
Like you brought up the ogre and it was like,
oh, that guy who now...
What a turn for Verge who went from auctioneer
to someone who really cares about the craft of acting
but has an incredibly fragile ego.
Oh.
So fragile.
Yes, and we have Daniel.
to think for that. What inspired you to bring back Verge and then also paint him in this way?
It was literally just, like, I remember friends of mine who did comedy and friends of mine
who were actors being like, oh yeah, I'm going to take an auctioneering course because that's
something that you can do. No. Yeah, I'm not kidding. That's something that you can do.
How have you done it? I've never take, I should, I can talk really fast. I've thought about it.
I can auctioneer. I can talk blindingly fast if I ever. I won't do it now. I'll save it. I'll save it.
It's a party trick.
But so that is a thing that I've known that people can do.
Like there's a guy back home in Seattle who used to run this like talk show and he would also auctioneer.
So that was just, that's a thing that's been in my head.
So when you said auctioneer and we were like, well, we need someone to run a distraction and say that, that was my first thought was like, oh, well, this person who was good at public speaking, maybe they also have an acting background.
And so that's why I was like, and then I was like because they also had that previous thing of like busy, also busy knows three people.
And that was the first person that ever told Busy, like, oh, like, you're a pretty little skeleton.
And so that was like, okay, I know this person for Busy and then for Danielle was, oh, maybe they'd have some acting abilities.
So that was where that came in to add flavor to just the ogre.
I love it.
I love it so much.
I love that, yeah, the whole goal was actually, look, when we get down to what the plan was, actually pretty simple.
convince people a kegher needs to be a rager
get extra kegs and then
kind of figure it out from there
to me the thing that kept cracking me up
is that we never sort of verbally
clearly established that we were going to convince them
to throw a party we're just like yeah we'll turn a kegger
into a rager and we all accepted that as gospel
I was just like okay I guess they're having a party now
And we'll send the town auctioneer to do it.
Yeah, who was not part of the Feens United,
but, yeah, wound up working out.
Like, Fiends United doesn't turn someone down.
Yeah, oh, also, I'm a dwarf, and I got kids.
Oh, sure.
We got some major busy lore.
I abandoned, I died and left children behind.
I got children's.
Between two and five.
Yeah, dwarfy kids.
So, yeah, so busy.
What else did you get from that?
Well, so we go and we do the flashback.
The classic noise.
Classic noise.
And so it sounds like they're, you know,
Busy was talking with someone else who's like in her group,
and Busy very much believes that that light
that she has been communing with,
that she has been talking to is something good and positive
and helpful.
And everyone is like, you are being,
like obviously something's in your brain,
you are being manipulated, it is something outside you,
and Busy's like, don't tell me who I am or what I am
and, like, what has led me.
It sounds like it was probably Busy's partner,
and business partner is probably like,
you're, we've got all these chill ready.
You're in a cult.
Yeah, you're in a cult.
Whose symbol is an eye on fire with a halo about it.
Yeah, yeah.
Really chill.
It sounds, look, that sounds super chill to me.
Like, that's what that sounds like, to me.
And so, yeah, so Busy's obviously
having this religious euphoria and or probably being brainwashed before she dies.
And then, you know, she wakes up and she's still kind of like processing everything
while still trying to like, okay, this is the mission.
I don't have a second to like really sit in this.
Like I feel like this will really hit her because finding out that you have kids is kind
of a big deal.
So I feel like when there's a moment to actually think about it, Busy will probably give herself
a second to be like, and what's with the, I got kids?
Like, Busy doesn't know how long ago this was, if it's a thing where, like, her kids
would still be alive?
Would she be a grandmother, great-granddad?
Babies having babies?
She don't know.
So there's all these questions that she will probably have, but she just knew that at the time,
she had a very important mission, which was, you know, talk to this dude who rejected
her, get something that smells like Eun-ZUk, and then also like some stuff.
with a treasure.
I had no idea where you were going with the bed sheet
apart from just like wanting to auction stuff.
I love that that came back.
I hate that came back.
I loved it.
Oh my God.
What an incredible like and.
It really was genuinely just like it's really funny
that she's such a fan girl that she would want to own something if it is.
But if you're going to do that, if we're going to take that much time to do a funny thing, it has to come back.
to come back.
So I was always going to be a thing of like,
okay, well, this seems useful.
So even if it's funny, I can bring it back another point.
So when you open that up, it's like, well, how are we going to get it all out?
I've got a bed sheet.
I wasn't sure it was going to happen.
So my plan was to lock myself inside the safes and read the documents in the meantime.
But I'm like, all right, our plans are going to change.
Who knows what's going to happen?
How was your backup plan?
Oh, my God.
My backup plan, because I was like, okay,
I don't know if I'm supposed to open this safe.
And I did appreciate the mega inspiration mechanic
because I always love in certain game systems,
like 10 Candles, for example,
where you can share narration rights
during these really important moments.
And obviously nothing is going to derail the narrative
in a way that's going to be counterintuitive
or, like, tell a bad story,
but something that's hopefully exciting
and opens up new narrative opportunities.
And for me, I'm like, okay, Phibbs is someone
who's like clearly wants knowledge.
He's like, there might be something
of Udzug in there.
We know that there's a connection
to the Sundari.
I have to learn more
because of his own sort of flashbacks.
So he just wanted this
and also got to use the skeleton key mechanic,
which is just so good.
And I just wanted to see if that was possible.
And then when he described what's in there,
I'm like, oh, I might have made a huge mistake
by opening this because this is so many things
and I am but a weak skeleton.
Right.
So my real backup plan was
if we're like, you know,
if I can't get the safe open,
I was going to try and use my mega inspiration to snipe one of the barrels on the way out.
That was my backup plan, just start blasting.
Look, we still blast.
Look, we can still blast next time.
It's, yeah, it's all set up.
I mean, yeah, you definitely did the work to plant the explosion that Busy's after,
that all of you were really after, mass destruction, including Loof.
But, but, yeah, the mega inspiration was because I knew, you know, from the beginning,
you said, like, we're going to go on a heist.
and I know that there are some things...
Greetings, adventurers.
Spring has sprung here in Los Angeles,
and that means it's a brief period where it's only 75 degrees
instead of 95 degrees.
I'll take it.
And that means I've been outside a lot more.
Walking around, occasionally galloping after a toddler hopped up on juice boxes,
traveling a bit, you know the vibe.
And after doing some spring cleaning,
my wardrobe, I've got to say, looking a little bit sad.
I want clothes that can keep up with me,
and my son, but updating my wardrobe every spring sounds pretty expensive.
So that's why I wound up signing up for Fabletics as a VIP.
It let me overhaul my springtime outfits without obliterating my bank account.
New VIPs unlock major savings on that first purchase, so trying new fits feels way more doable.
When I signed up as a new VIP with Fabletics, I got 70 to 80% off everything.
It made it easy to grab a few new pieces without overthinking it.
And the quality really surprised me.
Everything feels premium and soft and breathable, but you're not paying those premium prices.
What I like most, though, is how versatile everything is.
You've got stuff you can work out in, but also wear out.
There's matching sets, lightweight hoodies, joggers, teas, you name it.
The kind of stuff you can throw on in the morning and not worry about later.
When I'm at home, my favorite thing to pull on is the oversized hoodie.
It's so comfy I could just live in it 24-7.
It's perfect for walking my dog on like a chilly night.
But what I'm out and about, I've really been loving the ribbed Johnny Collar
polo. It makes me look like I should be taking a high-powered meeting by the pool at the
White Lotus, but hopefully with less murder involved. I don't know. It's insanely comfortable.
I highly recommend it. So shop now at fabletics.com slash critical role to get 70 to 80% off
everything when you sign up as a new VIP. Take a quick style quiz and be sure to select
critical role when prompted to unlock your 70 to 80% off. This is a limited time offer,
so don't wait. Again, that's fabletics.com slash critical role for 72.
80% off everything as a new VIP. And now, on to the show.
Greetings, adventurers. Lately, I've been getting a bit more intentional about what I wear from day to day,
because instead of just falling out of whatever laundry baskets nearby, I've been leaning into pieces
that feel easy and comfortable, but still put together because it just makes getting dressed
simpler when I have a plan. Quince has been my go-to to help with that, because the fabrics feel
elevated, the fits are clean, and everything just works without me needing to,
overthink it. And Quint says all the wardrobe staples you need for spring. Think 100% European
linen shorts and shirts from just $34. They're lightweight. They're breathable. They're comfortable.
Your legs and torso will thank you. And he will still look put together. And clean 100% Pima Cotton
Tees with a softness. Well, you got to feel that to believe it. Believe you me.
Their pants also hit that same balance. They're relaxed. They're comfortable, but still polished
enough to wear basically anywhere. And everything's priced between 50 and 80%
than what you'd find at similar brands.
Quince works directly with ethical factories and cuts out the middlemen so you're getting premium
materials without the markup.
And since spring is here in Los Angeles, a brief period where it's 75 degrees instead of 95 degrees,
I spruced up my wardrobe with a pair of the comfort stretch traveler five pocket pants and the
heritage washed denim shirt.
Not only do they feel great, but I unequivocally look good as hell while wearing them.
That's just science.
So refresh your every day with luxury you'll actually use.
Head to quince.com slash critical role for free shipping on your order and 365 day returns.
Now available in Canada too.
That's Q-U-I-N-C-E.com slash critical roll for free shipping and 365-day returns.

That are just going to look, this was a longer episode, but D&D may or may not support exactly what you want to
happen like there is. We're also doing theater of the mind. So there is geography at play,
but it's a little looser. So there's just going to be something that I know that you'll have in
your brains at some point that's going to be climactic. And boy,
like a mega inspired cannonball. I mean, but we also did too. We had one, we had one that
catapult, we had a gun shoot off from Chab and then yeah, we had a whole body. I almost love that
this sort of heist is sort of like a proxy coming of age party for Tippy.
Like I imagine this is his like,
a scene in American Pie.
He's kind of becoming a man and like getting the party for the first time.
Yeah, Tippy had that moment,
speaking of becoming a man, like where busy's coaching him kind of Serenow.
Great, yeah.
With a Bacara, who seems at least not completely disgusted,
She's not disgusted.
I think goblins are just a little more into weird stuff.
Yeah.
He may have gotten himself friends on, so we'll see what happens there.
I know, yeah.
He did get a wet-willy, which is not a good sign.
Wait, that's not how you flirt.
It was goblins.
In goblin culture.
In goblin culture.
When you're going goblin mode.
That was a funny moment, too, when you turned into a red...
Into Rippie.
Into Rippie, yeah.
Because I would imagine, like, he doesn't know, like,
like, he doesn't know what would be the best thing to turn it.
He's not confident enough.
And so logically, the only thing he's confident in is himself right now.
And so he's going to just be red.
That's the only thing that's going to change, really.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Tippie is confident in himself because he got that thang on him.
He got that thing on him.
He stays strapped.
Yeah, he keep it on him.
You know what I mean?
I am fascinated.
I am fascinated by the two skeletons that, one.
one, you gave up a finger on that first date.
You were like, yeah, this is gonna work.
They come off.
And then two, that you did put some of your essence into that tablet.
Oh, yeah.
I always was planning on breaking.
Yeah, I was always planning on breaking that tablet.
Okay.
In hopes of getting my essence back.
I was never, that was always like a tricksy thing.
I was never like or, like, because my thinking behind that was go ahead and give up the essence.
Either we can get it back with destruction or if we at some point.
needed to use it for other like Fiends United subterfuge, we could be like, hey, like, we're
part of it. Like, it's, I gave up by, here's my, here's my card, you know. Maybe we could also
get, like, you know, one of those real estate benches with our themes on it or something. But so that
was, that was also my thinking was, is if it's just a tiny, like, little piece of essence,
then maybe that could also help us with other kind of. Okay, great. So I was also asking
about, like, how do they scry? Because if it takes a lot of effort, but I guess they would probably
expend that if we make off with their goods.
But who knows?
Who knows what's going to happen next episode?
I broke them tablets.
So I don't know if that's still good.
We'll have to see if we're still,
if they still have our essence or they're coming back.
It is unclear where they store the essence.
Valacius was a little bit.
He was a little vague on the technical details.
Yeah, I do like the jokes and the metaphors about the internet basically.
So with the big thing for me this episode was us finally getting to meet
Kyah.
Yeah.
Because she is scary.
Yeah.
And you did, I want to remind you that you did fail a perception check that might have told
you something else.
Oh yeah.
But yeah.
She's, yeah, she's frightening and rightfully so.
She seemed.
The fact that she said, this takes me back.
When she first saw us, I was like, huh, I should ask about this.
But then I failed my perception check.
So I'm like, I shouldn't ask about this.
Oh, yeah.
Just to meta a little bit, what are you thinking?
I think that perhaps Kaya is a former dark empress herself of some sort,
or she clearly has a connection to Eun-Zug
or maybe she was undead herself at one point,
and this is a glamour.
I'm just curious, there's clearly something going on there.
Well, yeah, the big clue is that his staff is in the safe,
which he's supposed to have taken with him,
which is one of the objects.
Right?
Theoretically.
We're inferring that his staff is one of the five articles of the Sundari champions.
Right.
Yeah.
And that that staff is the same staff because we already know that the goblet that's in there is a counterfeit.
Yes.
So we don't even know if the staff that's in there, if that is another...
Is it counterfeit or...
Right, right.
We don't know that.
Is it bootleg or is it the real deal?
We got to read those documents.
Yeah.
Is it a Louie or did they get that?
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I've bought it down the street.
this street.
Yeah.
Dollar cosplay.
Yeah.
Have you ever been in like downtown LLLLL?
You know when it's going downtown LLLLAC.
You know, where you get all your...
I don't know the stitching's not right, you know.
The cobra on this one, like it turns to the left but normally like turn to the right.
You have to look it up online to see if it's...
Well, I know for me as a Dungeon Master, I'm going to...

to just do my best to simplify how many freaking NPCs you encounter.
I mean, props to you, that is a lot of things.
No, yes.
We were trying to, I think we were trying our best to make sure you didn't just have to have
extended conversations with yourself.
You did great.
It's inevitable in a situation like that.
No, no, yes, no, no Knox at all.
You all did great.
And it is, and it is just one of those moments where it's like, you know, for a home game,
fine.
Like, we do what we do.
And then for a show, it's kind of like,
oh wait, no, this matters, and it does matter, and it should matter, and my brain's breaking.
And I just can't remember.
But, yeah, that was really delightful.
We got some, you know, like we spent a little while in Nacreca now, so we've gotten some.
Second home.
Well, we'll see how long it's going to be our home based on everything we've just done.
Yeah, because we've still got a cross-purp worm.
Yes.
To get back to the airship,
we've got to get out of the palatial tutor-style mayor's house.
Yes.
We did also open ourselves up to magical surveillance from Kaya and the Feens United Union.
And we also haven't made it out yet,
and there's displacer beasts about, so we have to...
Among other monsters, yeah.
The ones we're guarding the sick, I'm talking about.
I hope that they are enjoying the light show.
Hopefully that would be.
That was so funny.
That was, yeah, that was amazing.
It definitely distracted Palacius.
And, yeah, I think, look, I mean, they're monsters, right?
So they want party, debauchery, like hedonism, screaming, loud noises.
They want a kegger to turn to a rage.
They wanted that.
Yeah.
This was not a hard sell.
I think Kaya was the only person who didn't want that.
Yeah, especially the illusion of Kaya.
This is so loud.
I also love that
Chab what's his face?
Chab. Chab.
Just started shooting his gun at the ceiling.
Police is like, you have to stop.
You're a delivery guy.
Why are you shooting your gun at the ceiling?
I thought I was being like, if I knew that was an option,
I would have started blasting with.
I mean, it's very much.
I had a cascadiple all sneaky.
Yes.
It's turning into like that.
half-ling duffer is definitely
the brains of the operation and
Chab is like a real
I guess his name is Chab
yeah for sure
He's just a
Not so brainy
He's a warm body
Yeah he's a pulse
Yeah and he has a warm gun
Well I'm excited to see what we have
In the proverbial chamber as we continue this
heist in the next episode because
Wow this was
This left us with a lot of different directions we can go in
