Starting point is 00:00:00 Insurance isn't one-size-fits-all, and shopping for it shouldn't feel like squeezing into something that just doesn't fit. Folks, it was a doozy. I know I say that like every episode,
Starting point is 00:01:39 but this episode was legally a doozy. You find any tort lawyer, whatever that means in the country, they will say, this is a doozy, and they will back me up. But it's not just me. I'm joined once again by my amazing cast. Daniel Radford, that wouldn't be tort. Sorry. I shouldn't know that, but that.
Starting point is 00:01:57 I'm Amy for Paul. Hi, I'm Jason Wynne. And our special guest. Hello, I'm Ifiwadi Way. I am so stoked to talk about this episode, but as always, folks, there are spoilers here. There'd be spoilers. So watch out if you haven't seen the latest episode
Starting point is 00:02:12 of Goblin Mode, tread carefully because otherwise, no, blame yourself. These are your choices and they led you right here. But for everyone else is sticking around, let's talk about this episode. First and foremost, we gotta welcome the amazing captain to our midst. Yepy, we're so stoked to have you here.
Starting point is 00:02:30 Tell us about your character and like the creation process. working with Amy to have him join us this episode. Yeah, no, it was real great. I mean, Amy made it so easy for me. I have all these notes because just had a breakdown of the world and basically where, like, Ray Tel comes in play. And, you know, super easy because you made it just this stat block.
Starting point is 00:02:54 So really, all that stuff's just squared away. So really is just kind of fleshing out where Ray Tel stands. and, you know, I imagine, you know, we'll find this out more and more as we go along that he's a kind of aloof person, but he's very, he cares more so about the well-being of the crew and make sure everyone is their truest selves, because I just imagine that since he's, you know, the captain of this crew that has nowhere else to go, he wants people to just kind of live in their truth, which is why I feel like he really kind of, kind of, of like, needleed in on Tippy. I was like, no, you're gonna say how you feel. We're not gonna let it be hidden and be scared of who we really are. I love that.
Starting point is 00:03:42 In your character creation process, at what point were you like, I'm gonna make this character the hottest character so far to come along? What's the deal? Nine feet tall, full of chest hair, stacked, you know what I mean? Meanwhile, that's just how Oni's look. You know, I really just. Big Blue Buff and Hoaree, let's go.
Starting point is 00:04:01 They're just like super giant nine feet tall, you know, horned guys that are muscular. So I was like, yeah, I think the only change I really made was make them have, you know, locks instead of, you know, straight hair. So they came hot pre-made. No, I would say onies are not customarily hot. I think we, I think it's like when you mix Iffy with any monster, you're going to get some sort of daddy vibe. When you multi-classes in your feed becomes canonically high, it makes sense to me. When I mix in, I get a sweaty goblin. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:04:38 It's a Jason guarantee. I will say, like, what you said, Danielle, as busy when you were like, well, one of them's frowning, which was smelly, and one of them is smiling, and that is Captain Raytel. I was like, that was like, that was like, that was like, oh, good, they, like understand the dynamic of who actually Captain Raytelg is, who is this beloved. beloved character who, you know, you can tell may or may not deserve by the smarts of the captainship, but as far as the mascot version and the leadership, yeah, for sure. Yeah, like when you kind of were talking to me
Starting point is 00:05:14 about the kind of smelly dynamic, I really, in my head was like, okay, he's like Duke Senior for all on his Shakespeare and it's out there where, you know, he's leading off of charisma. Like people like them because they want to follow him, not necessarily because he has the best plans, but he is smart enough to surround himself
Starting point is 00:05:35 with people who can get things done. And the wielding of the glaive too. Yeah, glaive confidence. It's a step above gun confidence. And when charisma fails, there's a glaive. But no, he's clearly got that emotional intelligence as well, which is important to keep a crew aloft. I also loved the whole kind of corsair vibe
Starting point is 00:05:55 that we got from this airship, because to me it felt very different in flavor than the rest of the marked in a very cool way because of course the people piloting their airship would be just this like badass group of sky pirates so I dug that in particular. Yeah, I will say
Starting point is 00:06:13 there when when I learned about Sundaris which was very little just presented to me and what the theme of this show would be it was I made it my own pretty fast but there was the marked as part of the faction
Starting point is 00:06:30 that I was like, oh, there's something here that I want to tap into. And making them all lichenthropes or the theme of monster and human or both or neither was something I really thought, oh, that'll be what the marked is. And so, yeah, if
Starting point is 00:06:46 he was going to be this only who could shape shift just backwards, kind of. I lost my mind when you turned into a baby. I'm like, did they pre-plan this? Yeah, I was like, how as possible. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:07:01 No, Oni's by nature, I mean, it's one of those, it's one of those just kind of monsters that just goes back and forth and I don't know,
Starting point is 00:07:10 there's lots of shape-shifting monsters in D&D, but I thought, yeah, like, yeah, Ones are specifically on theme, but, you know, the photonegative version of Lichenthropes in the Marked.
Starting point is 00:07:21 Yeah, that was great. And I loved all the stuff with Smelly. I think for busy in particular, like, Ellie is just the pirate version of Busy. I did not know that was going to happen. When you started bonding with her, I was like, oh, yeah. Because at first is that thing of like when you see yourself and Busy's like,
Starting point is 00:07:41 oh, I hate her. And then it's like, Busy's like, oh, like we're the same. Like the way that she, like, the deference she treats her captain, the way that she wants to be taken seriously, like the way that she needs validation. And so Busy was immediately like just two middle managers just like coming together. To do middle management. The goal was smelling was just because I knew I was packing a lot of lore onto Iffy just coming in for a guest spot.
Starting point is 00:08:07 And I thought, well, what's a character that could support him? And also really, like, to me, someone who's, like, over-emphasizing what the stakes are all the time does have, like, have a stick up her ass. So that was just the onus of the character was just going like, oh, I need to support Iffy and go like, this is important. kind of for everything. And it's a good thing we had a character like Smelly because we did learn some pretty campaign-shaking lore this episode.
Starting point is 00:08:36 Oh, yeah. You know, the death cults, the scythe of Aurelios, who resurrected the Demon King Faraxis and one of the most significant events of the entire campaign, the searing. So, you know, just some minor things for us to maybe follow up on in context. Yeah, I mean, look, It's very, like the Fains United is connected, highly connected, in a way that you're just now learning
Starting point is 00:09:02 it is very important in a very important way. Well, we got confirmation that they hire the gallantlings and like it's official that they're, yeah, we hate them. And they're an umbrella, they're part of an umbrella corporation, which to me screams that they're not really a union and this is astroturfing. That's what that says to me. It is 1,000%. I mean, look, even their leader is lying about who she is. Kyah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:25 Now I feel extra not bad. Yeah. About blowing up their mansion? Yeah, yeah. It had to go. It looked really cool. We have our priorities and our priorities are what goes, boom.
Starting point is 00:09:36 Well, and also it's like you, this information may or may not matter to the mark. You have no idea. But as far as your characters, it's like there's a lot there's a lot there, especially with your loyalties to Unzug. Still. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:53 I mean, definitely still feeling a deep sense of loyalty to Eun-Zug, but kind of questioning things as well because we don't know. It seems like everyone knows Eun-Zug in a way that we don't, because we're so far down the ladders. Yeah, they've seen him at the grocery store. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. They, like, know him casually outside of work, and we're just, like, that is our god king,
Starting point is 00:10:15 and everything he does is amazing. I want to say that I was prepared to offer some of this, information to you. I was not prepared to offer as much as I did if you couldn't tell. If you had rolled a net 20. Oh, no, no, no. And then I, and then I kind of, God, I think I'm correct that none of you all have abyssal. And in my head, I was like, I mean, like, this is one of those magical dungeon master moments where you're like, okay, I just have to make a call. It's in abyssal.
Starting point is 00:10:46 And then Danielle the Bard, it just comes all the way in with comprehend languages, which means I had decisions to make. I mean, on a natural 20, you want to reward that, right? And so there is very much lore that you found out that I was really, really not prepared to have you find out in episode seven. My brain is tickling with all of this new, like the information about being unskeletoned.
Starting point is 00:11:15 I'm sure there's a better word for that. Deboned. Deboned. Deboned. Deboned. But you know, there's all that information about that and Kaya and then just I'm putting things together because going back a couple of episodes when Busy had her pre-death like flashback and and what kind of that could mean about
Starting point is 00:11:37 like what you know that could mean about her death we do know that she was involved in with a cult of some kind so is this the only cult or the like other like evil cults is like this involved is this, and that was kind of like, for busy, that was the first thing she thought was like, well, I was like probably part of an evil cult when I was living, so like, is this my cult? Excuse me, sir, are you my cult? Well, that one was an eye on fire with a halo.
Starting point is 00:12:07 Yeah, yeah, yeah, but that's why I was like, can I look at the logo? Yeah, no, different cult. Different cult. Not my cult, sorry guys. I'm having a lot of fun, because I know this is The Year of the Mind, with sigil descriptions, descriptions for different factions and what they mean, but also for the Sundari.
Starting point is 00:12:24 And the fact that y'all are picking that up is really special. That's like that's also why I just want to ask a bunch of clarifying questions just for my own edification. So I'm like, wait, how high up are we? So I don't, I'm like, I jump off the side. Seriously. Oh my gosh, I can't imagine. It would be funny though. I'm just curious if who survived that, that explosion. at the beginning of the episode.
Starting point is 00:12:50 I think Tippy is very curious about that. If they know what's us and how bad they're going to be. Yeah, that's a big, I mean, let's talk about that because that... Bird did those. That big escape was... Greetings, adventurers. Spring has sprung here in Los Angeles, and that means it's a brief period where it's only 75 degrees
Starting point is 00:13:10 instead of 95 degrees. I'll take it. And that means I've been outside a lot more. Walking around, occasionally galloping after a toddler hop, up on juice boxes, traveling a bit, you know the vibe. And after doing some spring cleaning, my wardrobe, I gotta say, looking a little bit sad. I want clothes that can keep up with me and my son, but updating my wardrobe every spring sounds pretty expensive.
Starting point is 00:13:33 So that's why I wound up signing up for Fabletics as a VIP. It let me overhaul my springtime outfits without obliterating my bank account. New VIPs unlock major savings on that first purchase, so trying new fits feels way more doable. When I signed up as a new VIP with Fabletics, I got 70 to 80% off everything. It made it easy to grab a few new pieces without overthinking it. And the quality really surprised me. Everything feels premium and soft and breathable, but you're not paying those premium prices. What I like most, though, is how versatile everything is.
Starting point is 00:14:06 You've got stuff you can work out in, but also wear out. There's matching sets, lightweight hoodies, joggers, teas, you name it. The kind of stuff you can throw on in the morning and not worry about later. When I'm at home, my favorite thing to pull out, on is the oversized hoodie. It's so comfy I could just live in it 24-7. It's perfect for walking my dog on like a chilly night. But what I'm out and about, I've really been loving the ribbed Johnny Collar polo. It makes me look like I should be taking a high-powered meeting by the pool at the White Lotus, but hopefully with less murder involved. I don't know. It's insanely comfortable.
Starting point is 00:14:37 I highly recommend it. So shop now at fabletics.com slash critical role to get 70 to 80% off everything when you sign up as a new VIP. Take a quick see. style quiz and be sure to select critical role when prompted to unlock your 70 to 80% off. This is a limited time offer, so don't wait. Again, that's fablatics.com slash critical role for 70 to 80% off everything as a new VIP. And now, on to the show. Greetings, Adventures, Lately, I've been getting a bit more intentional about what I wear from day to day,
Starting point is 00:15:10 because instead of just falling out of whatever laundry baskets nearby, I've been leaning into pieces that feel easy and comfortable, but still put together because it just makes getting dressed simpler when I have a plan. Quince has been my go-to to help with that because the fabrics feel elevated, the fits are clean, and everything just works without me needing to overthink it. And Quintz has all the wardrobe staples you need for spring. Think 100% European linen shorts and shirts from just $34. They're lightweight, they're breathable, they're comfortable, your legs and torso will thank you and he will still look put together. And clean 100% Pima Cotton Tees with a softness. Will you guys? You guys. You guys.
Starting point is 00:15:48 You gotta feel that to believe it, believe you me. Their pants also hit that same balance. They're relaxed, they're comfortable, but still polished enough to wear basically anywhere. And everything's priced between 50 and 80% less than what you'd find at similar brands. Quince works directly with ethical factories and cuts out the middlemen so you're getting premium materials without the markup. And since spring is here in Los Angeles, a brief period where it's 75 degrees instead of 95 degrees, I spruced up my wardrobe with a pair of the comfort stretch. Traveler Five Pocket Pants and the Heritage washed denim shirt.
Starting point is 00:16:22 Not only do they feel great, but I unequivocally look good as hell while wearing them. That's just science. So refresh your every day with luxury you'll actually use. Head to quince.com slash critical role for free shipping on your order and 365 day returns. Now available in Canada too. That's Q-U-I-N-C-E.com slash critical role for free shipping and 365-day returns. Quince.com slash critical role. It's just a middle ground of morality, actually.
Starting point is 00:16:55 Yeah, I think it was definitely like a crossroads for Tippy to sort of decide what kind of goblin he is. And I think for any sort of, you know, like he's never seen the world, much less blew it up with a bunch of explosives. So I think it would have hit differently if he hadn't seen a cobald right in front of the explosion explosion as it happened and I think that's sticking with him a little bit.
Starting point is 00:17:20 Yeah, the eye contact. Yeah, a little bit, a little bit. So I guess my question for you as the DM is at what point did you realize you were going to have Piccarra get captured? Yeah, look, that's a tricky one. I don't want to answer that question. That is something, I mean, there's like lots of math that you're doing. You try to prepare for as many hypotheticals as possible in between the episodes. And that's all I'll say about that. But I do know, I will say, the one thing that I will say is that I had no idea that there would be such an emotional attachment to Picara. A pekora.
Starting point is 00:18:14 It's a pecorra. Come on. My accent makes it, but cool, raw. But I, so there's a lot that's driven mostly by, yeah, what the players do and who they're attached to. So this Pekara attachment is definitely turning into something. Well, if you're going to put another goblin tinker out there that's like, you know, the only goblin of the opposite sex that Tippi's ever seen,
Starting point is 00:18:40 then he's going to fall in love. Yeah, yeah. I mean, he knew this not to me. That's all the tank. When he made out with a statue, if he were. Yeah. As a new baby out in the world for the first time. I'm not a baby.
Starting point is 00:18:51 Sure. You are baby now. Also, can we just get for your lower thirds now from Rob from Phibs? Can we just put not a totally dumb skeleton? Oh, no. I loved your weird like deduction ace attorney like moment. That was incredible, actually. Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:19:10 I got it. I didn't see that at all. Sometimes you're just talking. You just talk and talk and say things and it affects people. But one thing that happened with Ify that was just this magical moment of just improv was when it was an inside joke, right? Dungeon Dollars? Just an inside joke. But you offer it to Captain Rattelk and the look on your face when they say dungeon dollars is like, what are you talking? Which is perfect because, yeah, in the world, that's nothing.
Starting point is 00:19:44 Yeah, you're like, huh? I also loved that they had their own version of sidebar, which is corner conversation. Yeah. Incredible power move. What is that? Like, as a player, because I know you've done so much tabletop before, like, what was it like coming into a group that had so many hijinks and inside jokes? And, like, was it easy to pick up on, or did you feel like you were trying to, like, catch up all done? Well, I mean, like, you know, I think it's not lost on the Internet that we're all friends.
Starting point is 00:20:11 So that's true. So one, that makes it very easy, but two, you know, kind of like watching before I even hopped in and seeing the way that y'all were kind of like playing and the jokes that you had, I was like, okay, cool, I kind of know where I'm going to stand and all this. And then really it was like once I got in the seat and waited to see how y'all reacted to me and then what I was going to give back. So I think, you know, kind of seeing that when y'all were like, he's so cool. And he's like, well, then I can't do the same thing as y'all have to come up with this cool, different version. We don't sidebar up here.
Starting point is 00:20:50 We have cool. We have one. It's very different. He's so cool. Immediately cool, captain. Well, it's also, it makes sense as well because we clearly respect people in positions of authority based on our, coming from an overlord structure. Like, Lee's the captain, so we got to pay homage.
Starting point is 00:21:08 Yes. What was it like to have, I mean, it's such a small moment, you made a meal of it a bit is to have the... That's the campaign in a nutshell. Like, hey, Ed, right behind this door, there's like 30,000 gold. We're like, yeah, but what if we stayed
Starting point is 00:21:23 on some bullshit for 15 minutes? I had three moments planned, and we have 20 episodes. It was when you got the go-ahead to be the one revealing the loot. Oh, that was... Yeah, it was unexpected. Because we were all sort of like talking
Starting point is 00:21:42 about it, but then we kept talking up to the point of showing the loot and getting distracted, which is very us. I don't know, I like that we were able to do it as a team. It felt fitting. Also, getting to touch Unzug's ceremonial sheet. He slept on that. Yeah, he did. And he'll sleep on it again, because he's still
Starting point is 00:22:00 out there somewhere. That's right. Can't believe he is coming back. Daddy's coming back for us. Can't believe he didn't pack his sheets in his own bag that he packed. That's right. Deeply disillusioning moment. Well, I mean, if he did, then people would know what he's up to. I'm very excited to learn more about some of these items,
Starting point is 00:22:23 especially hearing their full names mentioned, like the Chalice of Kiercon, the staff of Robert, the documents. The documents. The readme.p.D.F. I'm very excited. I want to know iffy. I want to hear a little bit more about y'all's back and forth, you and Tippy with the romance.
Starting point is 00:22:41 and like and the wingman and like also suggesting that oh there's another like getting to the heart of it with the suggesting there's another man at play oh oh yeah that's great yeah I just I because I feel like in that moment you know Ray Telg is it knows what's going on like he's on to you and he's almost kind of trying to get it out of you instead of just taking you at your word because like I said you know he's the he's the he's the of this group of people that he wants to finally be able to live openly and truthfully. So like any version of like hiding your true self or intentions, he's going to attack immediately. And you know, there's going to be like bigger reasons and things at play is that I will spring on to Amy in the moments of future episodes as to why Raytell has this philosophy. But that's for other episodes. I love it. I love it. Oh no. That sounds like a threat.
Starting point is 00:23:43 That's a promise. You need somebody like Ray Tal because, you know, because these, we share a bond that's so, like, quick that it's like if Tippi's like, I'm fine, they're like, okay. You know what I mean? You know, because to get like super and this is probably just going to flesh out more, the more I think of about being Ray Tel. The more I think about his philosophy and where they stand within this world, he's probably looking at y'all as, you know, these former servants of a big boss. And he's like, no, you don't need to be under somebody. You don't need to be an arm of the man. Y'all need to be out being your own person,
Starting point is 00:24:18 running your own dungeons. And I think that's kind of what he sees in everyone, as he learns more and more about you. Wishing you could be there live for the big game, soaking up the atmosphere in the crowd. But too often, life gets busy. Or the price holds you back. Priceline is here to help you make it happy.
Starting point is 00:24:41 With millions of deals on flights, hotels, and rental cars, you can go see the game live. Don't just dream about the trip. Book it with Priceline. And I mean, that just goes to, I gave you a list of, like, loot that the, that the marked does just have on hand.
Starting point is 00:25:36 And for you to make that decision that, oh, they could take the challenge. with them, that did surprise me. That was one of those like, okay, okay. Like, that's why Smelly herself was like, really? We're gonna do this? But the way you explained it, I mean, makes perfect sense. Like it is dangerous to keep it up here.
Starting point is 00:25:53 They might deserve it, they could use it, and it does seem to be a big player in the grander scheme of things too. Yeah, because I feel like, you know, the way he looks at it is with everything that was revealed in that great, you know, Nat 20 roll, there's an element where it's like, oh, he just found out that he has something
Starting point is 00:26:16 that can bring more issues than need be. And I feel like his utmost, you know, ideas protecting like everyone in the mark, everyone at the wretched cove, he wants to make sure. So having this item that he knows that essentially this death cult is actively searching for, It's only a matter of time before they figure out that they have it, and then he has to defend himself against them. Or give it to these adventurers where in my head canon in stories like this, the NPCs or like guest players are aware of adventurers and how they are just bouncing around the world. So he's like, I'm going to just give this to y'all. And if need be, you know, the way that the marked are spread out, he'll be able to have tabs. on like where y'all are traveling and going.
Starting point is 00:27:11 And like if y'all ended up dying, then that's when he makes sure that someone goes and scoops it. If y'all succeed, you know, it's like, to me, like once you said like, oh, the marked is spread all around, I was like, oh, then this is a very connected person who doesn't feel the need to have to micromanage every piece of like the chessboard that he's actively working on.
Starting point is 00:27:39 See, that's so smart. That's why you're the captain. Yeah, it's so smart. That is not how smell I would run thing. And also to me, when you mentioned, like, and we'll give you membership in the marked, I'm like, that is also, like, calculated to be like, okay, well, you're going to be part of our group,
Starting point is 00:27:55 or we're going to leverage that loyalty, because clearly, you know, these are people who are loyal to their previous master. If they're formally inducted, they'll presumably be loyal to us. They won't explode our mansion. Yeah. Yeah, that's true. And this isn't the first faction you've come across either. I think you've come across at least someone pretend,
Starting point is 00:28:16 or a woman who was a vaunted. Wanted, that's right. You ran across the Fiends United, of course. Yeah, there have been some other factions, too, that you've at least heard of. And so you don't, yeah, there's a lot you don't know. Auctioneers Anonymous. Auctioneers Anonymous.
Starting point is 00:28:33 Yeah, auctioneers, who used to be actors. Improv everywhere. Imprope everywhere. Exactly. And you got your big explosion. Yes. Busy was wanting. And a thrilling opening where you almost felt your untimely undefth.
Starting point is 00:28:52 Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. That was a, look, that was a call in the moment where I was like, well, actually, no, we should have a role for this. Yeah. I thought featherfall was the right move. It was absolutely the right move. It just made me laugh so hard.
