Starting point is 00:00:01 Hello again, it's Brennan Lee Mulligan, and you're listening to Part 2 of this episode of Critical Role. In the crypt of Obrimus Manor. Shimmy, shimmy, shimmy. In the crypt of Obermiss Manor, light extinguishes magical darkness. you all.
Starting point is 00:00:39 Which, by the way, means even those with dark fission. So, Octus, even as you peer through shadows more normally, you find yourself still as the true teneprile gloom rushes in. Meaning, unless someone here has like warlock. We got those fatty candles, right? We got some fatty candles, but that is going to be a, to light a fatty candle is a bonus action. Oh.
Starting point is 00:01:04 So you gotta get those lit. That will take your initiative to do. to do. So for right now, you are in complete darkness as you hear the hissing and gasping of spirits of the dead. Fimble, it is your turn. First of all, this is the altar in which Guy Sarah Mai was laid. Starting point is 00:01:47 So thimble, darkness abounds. You also feel in this moment a protection from Octus around you, granting you a resistance to necrotic damage. But I will remind you that the resistance to necrotic damage is great on its own, but what it's really doing is preventing you from being vulnerable to necrotic damage,
Starting point is 00:02:06 which unfortunately, Tayor, Julian, and Sid, all are. Question. Yes. Ferry fire. If I light it up, how does it affect magical darkness, or how is magical?
Starting point is 00:02:25 Would I still see the outline of the fairy dust within the magical darkness? Unfortunately, I believe the wording of darkness, and I could be wrong here. which is sort of the template that we're going off from the magical darkness is the darkness spell. For the duration, magical darkness spreads from a point,
Starting point is 00:02:48 dark vision can't see through it, and non-magical light can't illuminate it. But these candles are formed of magical light. Alternately, you can cast a spell at the ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-ta. If any of the spells area overlaps with an area of bright-letter dimlight created by a spell level of second level or lower, that other spell is dispelled. Your fairy fire will get swallowed up.
Starting point is 00:03:06 Got it. Okay, then I'm not gonna do that. Oh, gosh, I can't see shit. Duh! I'm gonna fly up. You fly up, you are in a crypt, so the ceiling is only about low. It's about a eight foot, you know, seven foot ceiling. Yeah, I just want to be not next to.
Starting point is 00:03:26 Eight foot, seven foot. Um, can I hold my attack until I can see? Yes, you can hold your attack until you can see. or until you can see. Or until something attacks me? Yes, you can't. Yes, absolutely. So you are going to ready an action to attack anything that takes a swipe action.
Starting point is 00:03:49 Yeah. Okay, moving forward in the initiative, Julian, that's you. All right, so I'm holding the candle in my hand as everything just goes into full on darkness. I think Julian is a bonus action, is gonna reach back, is gonna tosses rapier to the ground for a second, reach back. back right here. Right there. And pull out some flint and tender real quick, like, cross his gauntlet to try and get that candle to light.
Starting point is 00:04:17 Is it a bonus action? Bonus action, yeah. Ignite it if you can. You ignite it and are surrounded by five feet of dim light. Five feet. It's a candle. So just, it's as horror movie as it can be. Your own shadow looms on the wall behind you.
Starting point is 00:04:34 By the way, as Julian's shenan's shableness. Julian's shadow looms. All of you watched Julian's shadow look down, and a smile slips across it as Julian illuminates himself, and you hear elsewhere in the manner, things begin to shriek. As soon as the shriek hits and the candle light begins to burn, the rapier that I dropped kind of off the side
Starting point is 00:04:56 of the steps in front of me, I kick down on the side of it, sending it flying up in the air as I catch it with the hand, and start shifting forward to move close over to the edge of that hallway right in between between, I'll say between Fimble and your brother. 10, 15, 20 gets you right here. Yeah, and just kind of stay at the ready there and I'm gonna hold my action as well
Starting point is 00:05:18 for something to come within visual range. As you move, what's that? No, yeah, go ahead. As you move, you leap forward going past Sid as Sid suddenly is illuminated in the darkness. You see him turn around. He goes, He'll go, and point over,
Starting point is 00:05:36 your shoulder as a skeleton is right within your field of dim light. When a ghost popped out. So as soon as he points, I like duck low and spin, like my knees almost like scraping the stone beneath me as I whip around with the rapier to try and shove upward, kind of into the skull of the skeleton as it appears. Hell yeah, go for it. Give me an attack roll. You see these skeletons, unlike the ones you were fighting
Starting point is 00:05:56 in Tanisar, are armored. Everyone here was a knight or some kind of armored warrior. That's a dirty 20. Dirty 20 is a hit, baby. All righty. Go ahead and do this story. It's a five. Yeah, I'm gonna let it ride there.
Starting point is 00:06:10 I'm not gonna use my savage. Okay. That's gonna be nine points of piercing damage. Your rapier flashes out through the armor, through the ribs, yank, some of the ribs clatter loose, and this thing is still standing. You see it stands there, scorpions on either side of its breastplate,
Starting point is 00:06:30 leaning forward. All right, I just kind of shout out. Let him if you got them. That's you. Sid is going to move into your five feet of light and attack the other guy who's within, who's right there for you. He's gonna make his attacks.
Starting point is 00:06:55 Two hits, way to go, Sid. Sid comes along and he goes, Light of my ancestors, let's call it! And lowers his axe down and shatters this skeleton. Yeah. That's good. I'm going to borrow that. Julian mutters have credit.
Starting point is 00:07:16 And that's going to be Octus. All right, I'll roll my hit points for my level up. Yeah, go for it. All right, yeah. That skeleton go out or just back. Done, done, bones. Done's got better than two. What did you roll?
Starting point is 00:07:33 Three. A three. Hell yes. I will go to. I'm up to. I'm up to. to 37 hit points now. Wizard. Wizard.
Starting point is 00:07:42 Wizard. All right. Being there, seeing all this happen and kind of get back into it. Yeah. Yes, you have extended protection to Thimble, connected with the tennebrile gloom of this place. Essentially, the vast mantle of the underworld.
Starting point is 00:08:02 The underworld is a blanket around this world. The underworld could not make sense unless it attached to a little. living world. It is a mantle of darkness, but also serving some vital, what's this, me holding my hands like this? No, no, no, no. No. That's a joke. A joke. I don't know if he knows what jokes. About you. I don't know anything about jokes. Looking at you have never been more certain that the underworld has a vital purpose. It is there for a reason, and it is being abused by those who would use it for power, and you've grabbed two fistfuls of the fabric of the underworld
Starting point is 00:08:45 and finally have a hand in the game your family has been playing for generations. Let's see if this works, and I'm going to reach out my hand towards Dame Ceramai's body, and I say, I do appreciate the protection you once offered me, and as though your, and although your spirit has left, your body can still be of use, and I'm going to use a third-level spell slot to to bring the body back to fight for me. Hell yes. Give me an Arcana check. Sick, dude.
Starting point is 00:09:16 That's great. I'm gonna bring you all this way to lay you to rest. To lay it down and... Actually, you know what? Get your ass, yeah. Get it one, fight. 21. Arcana.
Starting point is 00:09:27 What would you do if you became aware that Dame Gaiasaramy's spirit had not left? Nobody has offered funeral rights to her. No one's. cast speak with dead on her. Right. That was Tertia. And we used to talk. So then I, in that moment of realizing the spirit is still there,
Starting point is 00:09:51 I say, I changed my thought process and my intention of the spell to request that I can, that Dame Saramai protect me one more time. Reaching out, you see, a voice calls to you. mistake. What did honor by me? And you see her corpse convulses and snake venom pours out of her throat over her shattered jaw onto her body as she rise on the table. What did it fucking buy me? Survive this and I will show you a different path to walk. Animates her and says all of you, even here in the dark, hear a here, no, you know, that all happens.
Starting point is 00:11:45 instantaneously. And you hear of a dead arm moving in a corpse-like twitch of tendons towards a magical long sword, the one you guys carried all the way from Timeney, the sword that almost killed you. Dame Sarah Mai's body, a massive gaping hole in her chest that just oozes poison as she, The veil clings to the wet mess of her shattered jaw as her eyes glow lime green in the dark. Even in the magical darkness, there's only one thing you can see. There's two things you guys can see.
Starting point is 00:12:29 Julian's candle and two glowing snake eyes in the dark. Dame Saramai is animated. Wonderful. Let me double check. The fuck. Everyone's cute little kid! Off in the magic school! So then I will use my bonus action to... I don't have a candle in my hand, I didn't grab one.
Starting point is 00:12:54 So I'm going to then use... I'm just going to command pin to go and give the help action to Teor. Okay. When it's Teore's turn. Cool. I will then... That'll be the end of my turn. Sarah Mai will act right after me,
Starting point is 00:13:08 and we'll get up and... How many? We got the one over there. Is there any more that have appeared at the moment? None within sight. I mean, you hear noise. You guys are surrounded by undead. You just can't see them.
Starting point is 00:13:19 So, Sarah Mai will get up and start walking towards where we did see the one with Julian and the sit. Getting off the table now. Sarah Mai is going to get off the table and head towards the one with Sid joining them over here. Okay, you want, okay, she is going to I'm gonna walk over there. Just walking that way, yeah.
Starting point is 00:13:42 Cool. Walking out of the darkness, Julian, you see your former adventuring companion, Dame Gai, Sarah, my blood-soaked veil over a shattered jaw, glowing green eyes. Sarah, my brain your hand. I do shout out, realizing I didn't say anything to the rest of the group.
Starting point is 00:13:59 Just go, oh, shit, I made a friend. Don't, Julian, don't kill Sarah Mai. My blade is about an inch and a half into the clothing. You could have said something a little sooner. Sorry, I never done this before. Your sword is through the wound, one of the two wounds she got in her chest.
Starting point is 00:14:20 I think I look up to her and say, welcome back. That is going to be, that's Octus' turn. Yeah, great. Okay. You guys hear a voice, a voice from the steps say, say, sorry, you guys hear a voice from back here
Starting point is 00:14:55 towards the entrance deeper into the Undercroft. That voice goes, courtyard, war now masters, and you guys hear a clattering of bones. Okay. However, Julian, you instead hear another skeleton descends on you. sends on you. One right through here will ignore that command. Teor, you cannot take a tax opportunity because you don't have visibility, but you hear shapes rushing past you towards the stairs. Laura, you're raising your hand? Oh no, just freaking out. Oh no. Just panic hand. Just that's a panic hand.
Starting point is 00:15:36 The hand at the level of your eyes. Before everything went dark, can you remind me where those candles were in the room? The candles are on this shelf right here. And we entered. from up top. You entered from up here. That's the entrance to the entrance. And the secret entrance was over here on this side. And that's where we heard the voices from that said to the courtyard. Yes, correct. To the courtyard. To the courtyard. And how do we win the encounter?
Starting point is 00:16:00 Please. Okay. These skeletons are not going to get advantage on you, Julian, but they are going to take swings on you. I like to see three try. That is a 21 and a 22. They did so. They tried. I would like to sing them do it. Julian, you take,
Starting point is 00:16:19 oh God, and you're vulnerable. Not to this thing. Just a necrotic. Oh, oh, you. So that's going to be 17 points of damage as both skeletons hit, as these swords slash across you. And yeah, you hear skeletons racing up the stairway.
Starting point is 00:16:39 Teor, that is going to be your turn. I see Julian's candle go up, and I want to do the same thing. Can I hold out the candle and just hearing movement or general sounds in the darkness in front of me? Can I just hold up a hand and I'm going to, I'm just going to launch a guiding bolt like into the distance in front of me and try and ignite the tip of the candle at the same time. Give me, bonus action, you are surrounded in dim light. Go ahead and give me, do, do, go ahead if you be so kind and give me perception. Perception.
Starting point is 00:17:15 Give me a perception check. 18, 20. 20 means you can choose the right square and fire with disadvantage. So you are listening for the skeletons and just firing in their direction as they charge up the staircase. Great, yeah, whichever.
Starting point is 00:17:31 And do you want to follow them up or are you staying where you are? We came in from this way. You came in from this way, but you hear bony armored feet clattering up commanded by something back here. I think we want to go towards the voice, right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:44 But they're also going to warn people upstairs. Oh, so we got to get those. Oh, okay, okay, okay. I see. Oh, so we need to fetch them too. We need to bar that, like stop, block that door so they can't get out. Then I will, oh, and there's a lever right here or something. But I can't see that.
Starting point is 00:18:04 But you pass it on your way in. Oh, there's a fucking lever. I'll fire towards those skeletons on the staircase. Give me an attack roll with disadvantage. Okay. That's a 15 to hit. 15 does not hit, sadly. Does it light the candle at least?
Starting point is 00:18:27 Your candle is lit with a bonus action, so you're good to go. You are surrounded by dim light. You have your dim light. Pin is there. He was giving him the help action. Oh, we have to re-roll that attack roll. I'm so sorry, Travis.
Starting point is 00:18:40 Okay. Because you have the help action, so it's disadvantage and advantage cancel out. It's a straight roll. Oh. That bet 19. 19 is a hit. Let's go, Fox Force, five.
Starting point is 00:18:54 Roll your damage for guiding bolt to be so good. 16, 11, 19 points of radiant damage. KORP reaching out a paw, one of the skeletons at the front of the pack. And I'll say as that light hits it, it illuminates one on either side. So you see three skeletons. They appear briefly here on the stairs.
Starting point is 00:19:17 Middle one shatters and shatters. bone, but you know there are two left in the dark headed for that gate. Got it. Okay. Can I use my movement? Yes, you can. I guess we're chasing them up the stairs, right? We're taking care of it.
Starting point is 00:19:30 So I head off in the direction that I... FI fired. Cool. Rushing up the stairs. Do you want to interpose yourself in front of them at the top? Yes. Make me wall of fur and fury. Cool.
Starting point is 00:19:41 You rush up here. You got these two skeletons coming up. You're able to basically brush past one, but the one at the bottom is going to get a sort of swing on you for a tag of opportunity. Should I try and pull that handle and shut the door? Yeah. Was that gonna close us in here?
Starting point is 00:19:56 I don't know, maybe. Everybody except then, hey! I don't have a bonus action anymore. So, this one, this one takes a swing at you and clangs off of your armor as you rush up. I'll also point out, by the way, that your armor class of 17 is, if you're wielding the axe, is now 15.
Starting point is 00:20:11 Oh, my goodness. So if you would do me the kindness of unequipping your shield, right? Because if you're using a double-handed axe, your AC comes down. This is, yes. So, after that. I saw naked. 16, why would it be 16?

Starting point is 00:21:07 just glancing over behind me to the one that's kind of partially engaged with Sid and now also getting the concept of maybe rushing up towards the door to try and interpose them from letting the rest of the So you're facing out this way. Yes. Okay, so you present a very near, because the candle you're holding is in your hand,
Starting point is 00:21:25 your shadow on the wall behind you is quite small, which matters for this moment because, which matters for this moment, because only two shadows spontaneously burst from the shadow behind you. This one vanishes beyond. Teor, behind you, your candle casts your shadow on the wall behind you, and you hear,
Starting point is 00:21:54 as those who have lit candles peeling off from the walls behind you, you fought these before at the Palazzo Divinos. The same spectral shadow entities burst forward, and four of them are going to surround Tejore. In the shadows, how back it could be? Uh-huh. I'm not sure of myself.
Starting point is 00:22:22 I remember how I mentioned vulnerabilities to necrotic damage? These are necrotic, these are necrotic? I took a few good things in the past. If I recall, this is gonna get bad. Oh, ho, ho! Are they close to me that I can use the thing I've been waiting for? Yes, you can use the thing you've been waiting for.
Starting point is 00:22:45 And that is within five feet of Julian, which means it's in light, which means you don't attack with disadvantage. And you are in darkness, which means that it potentially has a disadvantage on attacking you. Oh, great. So, so just to regular. Wait, is a sneak attack too.
Starting point is 00:23:00 Yeah, so you'll roll with advantage, which means the sneak attack. Okay. Oh, that's great. 16 plus a bunch. 16 plus eight. 16 plus eight? Okay, are you attacking this spectral thing?

Starting point is 00:24:06 A little bit of color lights this dark, depressing room. You're pretty good at this D&D thing. So 23 points of damage to that thingy. Hell yes. You deal 23 points of damage. And then I can attack it again with, because it... The Nick property...

And then what Nick says is when you make the extra attack of the light property, it's part of the action. You make part of the attack action instead of as a bonus action. But the light, it's working off of the light property and the light property only happens on your turn,
Starting point is 00:26:31 so we are going to rule that has to happen on your turn. That extra eight did not happen. Nice right. I love it. However, you have pulled the attention of this creature off of Sid onto you. Teore, you are flanked. I mean, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:26:55 I think with that many of an odd number of attackers, flank cannot be a turn. A, C, is 15, correct? 16 according to D&D beyond. 16 according to D&D beyond? Yeah. Big, big different. That is a hit.

You're attacked by five skeletons. Additionally, additionally to that as they reach out, And this is of marked concern because thimble is in combat, not because this is happening to you,
Starting point is 00:28:37 but because as they lash out at you, as they lash out at you, they are also going to reduce your strength score. Fimbles? That's really mean. No, no, that's a yours. But what I mean is, it's only a D4, so I'm gonna roll this in front of the board. One, two,

Starting point is 02:07:31 but it's up to you, you can attempt to follow them if you'd like. She did say to look after my sisters, so, Oh, she did. I'm gonna go with them. You go with them. Hey, what's a tailor shop? That's some kind of joke?
Starting point is 02:07:43 Because I got shitty clothes. Fuck you, what's a tailor shop? As the demons drag a manacled catigan and a bound Wolfrick out of the room, wrath judgment to enormous hounds snarl at Wolfrick. Volonius Halivar looks down and says, A little falcon for the tailor shop. Good, good.
Starting point is 02:08:09 And they pull you out of the room. Cadigan, you look across the room. It's just Wick and his grandmother left in here, along with his attendant Lux. Cross the table, Petra and Raya, and their father, their father, their father screams in the cabin.
Starting point is 02:08:34 You see the face of the sorcerer. He gazes at you with no knowledge of who you are or the long years of your life. You spent searching for this shadow. You level up. And that's the end of this episode. Oh! I feel like that's going way worse.
