Happiness.
We all know what it feels like, but sometimes it doesn't come easy.
I'm Garvey Bailey, the host of Happy Enough, a new podcast from the Globe and Mail about
our pursuit of happiness.
We know people want to live more fulfilling and positive lives, but how do we actually
do that?
Is there a happiness code to crack?
From our relationship with technology to whether money can really buy you happiness, we'll
hear from both real people and experts to demystify this thing we're all searching
for and hopefully find ways to be happy enough. You can find happy enough wherever you listen to podcasts.
What's stopping you?
What's stopping you?
Are you too tired? Didn't get enough sleep?
Don't have enough energy?
Don't have enough time?
Is that what's stopping you right now?
Don't have enough money?
Is that the thing?
Or is the thing that's stopping you, you?
You've never looked at yourself in the mirror and said, you let you down.
Until you get to that point, you let you down.
This ain't you, bro.
This ain't you. You weren't born like this.
The hard way is the easy way.
Because the easy way never gets you there.
I didn't get here making excuses.
No one's gonna f***ing come to help me.
It's f***ing me against me, period.
Have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror and said,
I'm not getting up on time.
I'm not going to work on time.
I'm not putting in 120% when I'm at work.
Most people don't understand what it's like to really go for something.
And to know that the consequences of not doing that are horrific.
Hey bro, why would you ever come without your best?
But that's why you should go out there
and challenge yourself to fail.
Because if you're not feeling that something,
that means you've set your goals to pass.
I value myself enough to give 120% or don't do it.
What the you waiting on?
We sleep one third of our fucking lives
and we think we can take fucking days off.
Your excuses will destroy you and take everything
that you ever wanted from you if you let them.
When everything falls apart in your life and your plan is f**ked up, what the f**k are you gonna do?
There's only one motherf**king option.
Stay f**king hard!
This is your chance. This is your shot. This is your moment.
This is your time. This is your opportunity. This is your place.
Because this is my time. This is my moment. Tomorrow, tomorrow, tomorrow.
Ain't no such tomorrow, tomorrow.
Ain't no such thing as tomorrow.
We only got today.
What if the pain can make you better?
What if the pain can build muscle?
What if the pain can cause you to reach higher, to leap farther, to run faster?
What if the pain could help you?
The people that make it in this world look around for the circumstances that they want
and if they can't find them, they create them. It's you that you must take personal responsibility to make it in this world look around for the circumstances that they want and if they can't find them they create them.
It's you that you must take personal responsibility to make it happen.
It's hard, no easy, it's not an option.
However ladies and gentlemen, what you will discover is that it's worth it.
It's your dream.
If you want it to happen, get your butt up and make it happen.
If you want it to happen, rise and grind.
When it's not loyal to you, it doesn't care about you. Winning doesn't care how sore you
are, winning doesn't care how much sleep you get, winning doesn't care how hard you work
at times. Winning requires all of you and then more and it promises you nothing. It's
a mastermind of creating fear and doubt in your mind, it causes setback after setback.
So the question is about winning, are you willing to sprint when the distance is unknown?
And why chase this thing called winning?
Because the only thing that's guaranteed in life,
if you don't chase it, is losing.
You still got work to do.
Stay on that basketball court.
Stay on that football field.
It's grind season, homie.
Now, shut up.
What are you gonna do?
Now, what are you going to do?
Happiness.
We all know what it feels like, but sometimes it doesn't come easy.
I'm Garvey Bailey, the host of Happy Enough, a new podcast from the Globe and Mail
about our pursuit of happiness.
We know people want to live more fulfilling and positive lives, but how do we actually do that? Is
there a happiness code to crack? From our relationship with technology to whether money
can really buy you happiness, we'll hear from both real people and experts to demystify
this thing we're all searching for and hopefully find ways to be happy enough.
You can find happy enough wherever you listen to podcasts.
People have this reoccurring nightmare
that there's some thing, some force
that's got a hold of them and it's holding them down
and they can't break free no matter what they do, they can't break free from that force.
Well, I'm here to tell you that that thing in your nightmare, that thing that's holding you back,
that thing that's dragging you down, that thing is you.
I've learned that there are two fundamental attitudes toward life and its sorrows.
Those with the first attitude blame the world.
Those with the second ask what they could do differently.
And you won't die.
And if you do die, you won't care.
Because you'll be dead.
Best case you win, worst case it won't matter.
Take full responsibility for your life.
We have two primary choices in life.
We can either accept conditions as they exist,
or we can take the responsibility to change them.
Number one competition is me.
It's always you versus you.
You've got to be the one to get up every morning, be disciplined,
put in the consistent daily hard work because that gained success no coach no trainer no mentor
No, boss can do it you versus you I cannot lose if I do not quit
And so it was that was under my control whatever experience you're having right now. It has not come to stay
It has come to pass
Not to stay just to, it's just going through.
The biggest challenge is to know what's happening.
This is a part of this thing we call life.
This too shall pass.
And maintaining perspective, putting it in perspective.
Life is short, it's too short to live depressed. It's too short to live anxious.
I want to challenge you tonight to get up. Your future is brighter than your past.
I want to say to you, get up! Your ladder is greater than your former.
I want to say to every person in this room, get up, because the best is still yet to come.
But if you want to begin to move
into your own personal greatness,
if you want to begin to really enjoy
a happy, successful, healthy life,
you've got to be willing to go against the tide.
You've got to be willing to harness your will
and say, in spite of this, I'm in control here.
I'm not gonna let this get me down.
I'm not gonna let this destroy me.
I'm coming back.
You ask the front, what do you want?
Man, I wanna be diamond.
Tell me something I don't know.
Everybody wants it.
But the wrong reality of it is everybody don't get it.
And the crazy thing is if you want it, you can get it.
It's not like somebody's stopping you or holding the guns in your head and telling you, you can't get it. the crazy thing is if you want it you can get it It's not like somebody's stopping you on the goods. You have to tell you you can't get it
It's a matter of will it's a matter of hard work. It's a matter of sacrifice
It's a matter of commitment, and I'm not talking about the commitment that says yes, I'll show up not that commitment
I'm talking about the commitment. I'm gonna stay true to what I said. I would do it's early in the morning right now
That these motherfuckers still sleeping?
We're not.
Because there's only so much time in the day.
And we can't let it pass by.
Why the fuck did I quit?
So what keeps me going?
I've quit several things.
I know what's on the back end of quitting.
It's a lifetime of thinking about why the fuck did I do that.
It's not going to be easy when you want to change
It's not easy if it were in fact easy everybody would do it, but if you're serious you'll go all out
It's been rough. It's been crooked
It's been hard
But I've made up in my mind that I will get a reward for the pain that I go through
I will not stop in the middle of the process. I will not be defeated.
I will not be destroyed.
I will take everything that happens in my life
and I will allow the pain to push me to greatness.
Basketball isn't easy.
All my life I've been striving to make myself better.
It's a full-time commitment.
To be the best, you have to work the hardest.
You have to chase what seems impossible over and over and over again
Because giving up it's not an option
And when you feel like you've reached your limit, it's only the beginning
That's when it's time to dig deep
To find the courage to push some more
Because if you got the drive, the discipline,
and the resolve to do what it takes
to make yourself great,
then the rewards are endless.
That as you go through the challenges of life,
and you look at it and embrace whatever comes to you,
don't run from it, step toward it.
Don't try and duck it like most people do. you. Don't run from it. Step toward it. Don't try and
duck it like most people do. See, most people want it easy. See, but when you go at what
you're going to deal with and you deal with the difficulties of it, when you handle those
hard things close at hand, making those hard decisions right now, but you know that in
order for you to get where you want to go,
this is one of the hoops that you have to flip through.
It's a war of many battles.
The battles are fought every single day for betterment.
To bring that police to the surface where you always knew you could be.
When it isn't about time you guys become the person you always knew you could be,
listen to the voice from within, the energy inside knowing you can be more than this.
Where there are no limitations, excuses, negative energy, it's just high voltage of
positive energy. Many battles easily won on a daily occurrence. The war will never be
won because that war is a better life
back then Everyone laughed at him for being different
Your job ain't done yet. Turn the ground out face come back here and finish the day
But yet you're fully committed to sabotage yourself and your career
Then you sitting back stressed out and depressed
wondering why Why ain't things happening?
That's the answer.
I just gave it to you.
It's about as real as it gets.
The question is what are you going to do next week, two weeks from now?
You're in your own way. You are the reason your career is not on the next level.
Nobody else but you.
So what kinds of things, what kinds of thoughts are you feeding your consciousness?
What kind of things are you putting in your mind
that will enable you to either move forward
or to justify why you're staying where you are?
What I tell people is the way you get to the next level of your life is keep going.
Keep going, keep running.
Even when you don't even know, when you get turned into chaos, you cannot be great if
you cannot operate in chaos. That's my life.
Because if you can operate in chaos, the world becomes Disneyland. Problems become scratches.
I can lose my car. Somebody can blow it up. I'm going gonna go have some sushi with my wife
and think about the solution, not the problem.
Many people focus on the problem and not solutions.
Get up at four in the morning one day,
just one day, and go for a run.
Commit to one day and see how you feel
as you're jogging it back in around five or something,
as your neighbors are still asleep, or as you're jogging it back in around five or something as your neighbors are still asleep
Or as you jogging it back in six o'clock and your neighbor just getting up grabbing the coffee looking outside
Wondering you know what the day is gonna hold for them where your days already provided something for you
You see how that works me mentally you feel like wow man
That was fucking alive, and then you go about your day at work and your co-workers like who the fuck would fuck? What happened to old Craig, man? This is a new... Who's this?
When you don't have a true appreciation and acceptance for who you are,
and you allow yourself to be immobilized by fear,
what happens in the process is that you begin to abuse yourself.
You begin to sabotage your life, you begin to sabotage your dreams,
you begin to unconsciousage your life, you begin to sabotage your dreams, you begin to
unconsciously work against yourself. You become your own worst enemy. So what do
you do about that? Well you you begin to realize that your dream and your gifts
have so much meaning and so much value for you, till your hunger for them will begin to push you past the fear.
Your hunger to have them will give you a special drive.
There's another kind of instinct that you need to be on the lookout for.
And this one is a liar.
This one is a saboteur. This one is a saboteur.
This one is a backbiter.
This is the instinct that says you've had enough.
This is the instinct that says you've given it your best shot.
You can stand down.
You can back off.
You can take a knee. You can rest now. Do not listen to that instinct.
Do not listen. And that is the instinct you need to fight. You need to push back to smash into the ground.
Train that instinct. Your instinct.
Train it to say, get up. Go. Fight on.
How happy are you that you paid that price?
I'm LeBron James from Akron, Ohio.
From the inner city. I'm not even supposed to be here.
That's enough.
Every night I walk into the locker room, I see a number six with James on the back.
I'm blessed.
So what everybody say about me off the court, don't matter.
6 a.m. right now.
Early.
Not many people here.
Why?
Because it's early and it's cold.
Two recipes people do
not like to deal with. The thing is when you look back on your life you don't remember
these days. You don't remember how cold it was. You don't remember the little bit of
sleep you might have missed. Getting out of bed early. What you do remember is coming
up second place, third place. Not first place. And you will become that successful person
where success doesn't define you,
you define the motherfucking success.
That's what it's all about, guys.
And it is very difficult to change
because we are hardwired to spot patterns
that seem similar and to repeat them.
I do think it's important to say
that if you're struggling,
if you're frustrated with yourself,
if you're at that point where you're so sick
of yourself and your excuses,
this is a normal part of the human experience.
And at some point, the pain is going to get big enough
that will ignite something in you that is missing
and what is missing in you right now is hope.
So a very close friend of mine he said you know the difference between champions
and everyone else and I was like what he said everyone always looks at them and
says what do champions have that I don't have and he said it's they have it
backwards he said it's what do you champions not have that I have it backwards. He said, it's, what do champions not have that I have?
It's what do they lack?
And it's an off button.
They just don't stop.
I know you don't wanna do it.
I never, I fucking hardly ever wanna do it.
I maybe wanna actually do it five out of 10 times.
But I do it.
Maybe less, yeah.
But I do it, I just do it.
I know what it's like to not wanna do it.
I get it, shut up. I just start talking to myself. I know what it's like to not want to do it. I get it. Shut up
I just start talking to myself. I go come on. What are you talking about? Do it?
Are you fuck who's on it? Yeah, get a sweat going and you're gonna feel pumped. Come on, man
You've done this a million times and then
Invariably, I'll be in the middle of the work and I'm sweating like yeah. Yeah
Yeah, and then I get into it. It's like it just you got to push past that creepy resistance
This is everything that we work for all season long all the sacrifices you made to each other dog every single day dog
Every single minute is gonna pay off. They say hard work pay off man. So let's make this thing become true
No one's gonna help you. No one's ever gonna help you guys. You've got to help yourself
No one's gonna help you. No one's ever gonna help you guys.
You've gotta help yourself.
And I hate to say this,
you really can't trust anyone but yourself.
And trust yourself when you bet on yourself,
you'll never lose.
But if you start to put someone else's efforts
in the equation of success of your own individual path,
you're gonna be sadly mistaken
on what comes from that path.
Bet on yourself, believe in yourself.
Don't allow anyone else's opinion, voice, actions
to dictate what's going on.
Because the further and further and further
along the path you go,
and the closer and closer you get to the end goal,
that result, you're gonna see more and more people
start acting funny around you.
Think about the time that you said, you know,
to your best friend or your group best friend or your girlfriend or your boyfriend
and you said what your real dream was.
You got all this courage and you got vulnerable and you decided you were going to tell the
truth about what it is you wanted to achieve and then what happened?
You got laughed at.
And he's, oh Andy, dude, come on man, like what are you really going to do?
And that was it, I just packed it in quit and then focused on training and that's I knew I knew I knew what was gonna
Happen I knew I was gonna get here. They didn't there's a lot of stressful years
only a lot of tough times and
Well, I proved them wrong. I proved myself right, you know better
But you're not doing better
better but you're not doing better. That's the part of this whole video that's going to make you a little uncomfortable.
You know better but you're not doing better.
That's some scary shit.
But I'm so used to doing wrong and being dysfunctional.
I know better,
but I don't want to do better.
Or,
I know better,
but I'm not willing to do better.
You have decided to settle, and you're so comfortable in your skin. You know better,
but the question is are you going to do better? One of the most brilliant things that was ever
said to me by an extremely skilled psychoanalyst is so simple and yet I do think it's the most
fundamental thing to understanding oneself is think it's the most fundamental thing
to understanding oneself is that it's all internal.
It's all about your internal representation.
Now that doesn't mean that there aren't good
and bad events in life, but the fact of the matter is
that if you set the next milestone as just outside
the distance of what you're comfortable with
and you make it there, if you allow yourself a moment to register that win,
you get energy to then set the next milestone
and achieve it.
Nothing hard lasts forever.
There's only three things that can happen.
You either quit, it gets easier, or you get better.
So no matter what, it always ends.
You only lose when you quit
before you see it all the way through.
And I think that's incredibly encouraging. So no matter how hard whatever it is that you're doing is,
which by the way just means that your expectation doesn't match reality, but no matter how hard it is,
you either quit, it gets easier because something changes externally, or you get harder, something changes internally.
But no matter what, it
will end. A lot of times in life it's f**king quiet. And those are the times when you want
to run and hide. You gotta be able to find energy. You gotta make up games, make up tricks,
make up whatever you can to get to the next evolution of life. To get up every day or
five days a week, whatever whatever when it's snowing,
not shining, not comfortable and to go in the gym and work out when
you don't want to go to the gym, it is not fun. If tomorrow is not promised to you
right and all you have is today, all you have is today, would you still do what
you're about to do today if there wasn't a tomorrow? Would you spend your last
day doing what you're about to do? that answers answers no there change some shit up you are the
general that is in charge of your life in charge of the war the war of your
life some people talk about being the CEO of your life I'm telling you you
are the general of your life because it's a war it's a war going on the battle that's going on in your life to be stronger and
smarter and faster and better so that means as the general you're the one who
decides what you do and how you're gonna do it. You come up with a strategy.
It's on you.
Continue to work your habits and continue to put the work in
and no matter if you're not feeling great about it
or whatever the case may be,
I think it's always gonna pay off
because the work never ever,
it never shies away from it.
I mean, you can never shy away from the work.
The work is always gonna pay off.
And when you shortcut the process, it'll catch up to you.
But if you put the work in day in and day out,
both physically, mentally, spiritually,
whatever the case may be,
I think it'll always pay off for you.
So for me, I want it to be great.
I want it to be great and you can't be great
if you don't punch your clock in.
So I think that's what it all boils down to.
Do something, stop being fucking scared
if you have not jumped on the bandwagon
of doing exactly what the fuck you wanna do,
which is skiing for the next three years
or working at a job that's not what your parents want
or what society wants.
Do something, stop being fucking scared.
And so enough, enough parents,
the kid that's sitting right now at a desk
and saw this in a feed and you hate your fucking job,
enough.
Stand up, get the fuck out of here,
and do you, live your life.
You got one life.
The biggest regret of the dying
is never becoming your ideal self.
I do believe that with us in a world that we don't fit in.
And I believe the journey is that a lot of people sell your bill of goods along the way.
That if you get some awards you mean something. You go to a certain school, you got it. You're cute,
You go to a certain school, you got it. You're cute, classical beauty, you got the right man, you got the right zip code,
and you swim through all that filthy swill until you come to the really, really stark conclusion
that I want to leave this earth becoming who I know deep within I
I am supposed to be
understand
one thing I found out
I thought the stars were the world
one thing I f**king knew though
is life is relentless
but I keep coming back with all your failures One thing I fucking do know is life is relentless.
You better keep coming back with all your failures, all your doubts, all your shit.
You better keep life, keep getting up.
Never fucking give up.
That's one thing we should all agree on.
If you're broken once, you know how that shit feels.
That means try and break me again.
One thing in life, suffering has no expiration date.
It don't give a f***. If you're black, white, poor, rich, where you come from, how you were raised.
It will keep coming after you.
Do it for your loved ones. Do it for your wife. Do it coming after you. Do it for your loved ones.
Do it for your wife.
Do it for your husband.
Do it for your children.
Do it for generations to come.
Come on, after you're dead and gone,
what will they say about what you did?
Yes, there's so many people depending on you,
but it's gotta start with you and the man upstairs.
If you wanna be great,
aw man, prepare to get up off that mat.
You're gonna get knocked down.
Over and over and over and even when you feel like,
no, nobody, I can't be hit this hard.
Or if you're down there thinking,
there's no way I can get up from this.
That's when you're just starting.
That's the best.
Well, go out there and show me what you do. Show me how you live.
Show me how you fight.
You show me how I fight?
Yeah.
Show me what you are.
I don't know where you are in your game of life. You may be in your third quarter
You may be in your fourth quarter. Come on, you're not gonna live forever not in this world
Come on, you may be in your first quarter your your second half and this time
It's got to be personal see last time you were just running through the place
Last time you were just running the songs that you rehearsed in rehearsal.
Last time you were just going through the motions and you got numb.
Come on, and you got tired and weary and now you're broken and bitter and angry because
you lost.
And I'm just wondering if you're courageous enough, bold enough, if you have enough faith,
come on, if you have enough inside of you, to come back to the sea this whole thing about suffering
Yeah, it sucks really bad
Really really bad
But we all live on this side of suffering on this side this nice box
That's very comfortable that we know when everything's gonna happen. We're in it. It's good. We know how everything's going to turn out.
It's those few people who are willing to go on the,
on this side of suffering. And once they get through that,
ask him how he feels now, his mind,
how far he grew in that short period of time,
he grew so much more than a normal person
because he was willing to go outside himself.
Because on the other end of suffering is greatness.
You got a lot of people playing their hard-earned money to come watch you perform.
Perform. Perform.
It's your job to be in shape. It's your job to be strong enough to perform at that level every single night.
And as a competitor, I'm not ducking.
Like it's not, oh my God, my back hurts, I'm sore,
we gotta play Vince Carter and Toronto Raptors tonight.
Pick your mountain, whatever that mountain is,
and each journey of the mountain is a million steps,
and each day you have to take that step.
Each day you take that step, you look up at the mountain,
you say, that's where I wanna go. And then each next day you take that step, you look up at the mountain, you say, that's where
I want to go. And then each next day you take your step over and over and over again.
Let yourself go, fall free into it. Step into it. You are worthy. You are an unrepeatable
miracle and there is none like you in all the earth. There will never be another you.
Your DNA, your fingerprint, come on. Your gait, your presence, your authenticity,
come on, you're special.
You're special and you're necessary.
The real merry Christmas happens
when all of that noise is gone, is quiet.
And it's you against you,
and now all those endorphins are gone.
And I promise you me by getting up early
and getting after to go lose weight, study harder,
guess what?
It's a lot harder now. That repetition becomes a lot harder now.
So a lot of us can't do things on our own. So find somebody in your life.
So when you throw that towel in, they throw that motherf***ing back at you and say you're not f***ing done yet.
Stay true to yourself. Stay hard.
Something about the best athletes, they all have a have a fucking self-loathing
and they also have an ego and they have this anger towards the competition.
If you don't have the mindset that you're the best ever, you've failed already.
I feel confident because I'm the best player in the world.
I'm playing to win. And to win I will destroy you.
I will do everything to win. And I need to win.
Because when I win it's my proof that I am win. And to win I will destroy you. I will do everything to win. And I need to win. Because when I win is my proof that I am alive.
I'm gonna beat these guys. I can beat all of them.
I'm number 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and maybe John and my email is 10.
There are just those very few players who train to dominate.
They train so hard that winning is inevitable.
Just get started.
Just get started. The longest time in the world is the hesitation between thought and action.
Well, at least it has the potential to be the longest time. It can actually be forever.
Forever. at least it has the potential to be the longest time. It can actually be forever.
Forever.
Beyond what Einstein said, one second can actually become an eternity.
That's how much it can flex.
You can hesitate for one second
to get started on something.
A workout, a project, a task,
something that you know you should do.
You can hesitate for one second.
That one second of hesitation,
all of a sudden it turns into five seconds.
And then 10 seconds, and then 10 minutes.
And then just like that, you drifted into the eternity zone.
One second became an eternity because something
that was gonna happen is now never gonna happen. Ever.
Why is that? Because you hesitated.
You hesitated. So don't take that chance. Instead, take action.
Two key words, delayed gratification.
This is when you gotta do it, when nobody's watching.
You gotta be kinda content with doing the exact same thing day after day after day and making
reasonable progress. That's where you really got to push it.
We started this in the basement.
In the f***ing basement.
Now go out there and show me how you do things.
Show me how you live.
Show me how you fight. Show me how you fight.
Let me show you how I fight?
Yeah.
Show me who the f*** you are.
Maybe some of you guys got something you never finished, something you really want to do, something you never said to someone, something.
And you're told no, even after you pay your dues, who's got the right to tell you that? Who? Nobody.
It's your right to listen to your gut and It ain't nobody's right to say no after you earn the right to be where
you want to be and do what you want to do. Don't doubt your own ability. We've all got
to deal with the enemy of doubt. I'm asking you don't let that disease grab you by the
throat. Yes, it's easy to doubt that it can happen. It's easy
to doubt we've all got fears that want to crowd in. You can go through those strenuous
times. If I can make it, you can make it. You know, the best quality in the world that
you can develop, to develop the quality of being unstoppable. Develop the quality of
being unstoppable. Say in yourself that no matter what life throws at me it will never
stop me. No matter how rough it gets I will never quit and nothing
will ever stop me. Make the decision that you can be tired, you can be worn out, but
nothing is ever going to stop you. But once you figure out your brain you become
unstoppable to almost anything. Here's the deal, too many of you guys waste way too much time
worried about what's going on with other people.
And yeah, I understand it can make you jealous.
And yeah, I understand it can piss you off.
And yeah, I can understand that it ain't fair.
But guess what?
Life is not fair.
One big thing is you have to learn how to fail.
Because I'm gonna explain this to you.
I had big dreams. A lot of us have big dreams, big goals.
And when you have goals that are maybe outside your reach, you have to know that getting to that goal, you're going to have a lot of bad days, a lot of setbacks.
Like I told you guys, I've lost in kickboxing, I've lost in boxing, I've lost in life, I've lost in love, I've lost in family.
Life is, you know, you don't just win all the time,
it's wins and losses, so you just, you roll with the punches.
Go back to the gym, work, because you have more to show.
You understand? Life continues. You cannot live in the past.
I'm really good on that, you understand?
I learned by the years that, listen, Cristiano, let's go.
Because pain, you're gonna have all the time,
uncertainty, and constant work.
Constant work, constant work.
Doesn't matter what's going to happen.
It's gonna happen in your life.
You have to continue.
This is the way I see the life.
Thoughts aren't true.
Feelings don't require actions.
Things aren't good or bad, they just are.
Our greatest enemy is ignorance. To change or bad, they just are. Our greatest enemy is
ignorance. To change your life, change your surroundings. Our actions, not our
pasts, define who we are. Victims see their past as their fate.
Champions see their past as their origin story. And so a lot of people are living
through their origin story right now, or they're living through the very reason that they will never be successful but
it could be the exact same situation.
And the only difference between either character is the actions they choose to
take. There's no losing, only learning. There's no failure, only opportunities
and there's no problems, only solutions.
So to me what failure is, failure is the mother of all success.
If it wasn't for Michael Jordan getting cut from his 9th grade basketball team, he wouldn't have became Michael Jordan.
Once you change one thing, your mindset, you can attack everything.
When you go to war with yourself, you find a lot of peace.
It's because you know exactly who you are.
Make this note. Don't become a victim of yourself.
Forget the thief in the alley that's after your purse.
What about the thief in your mind that's after your promise?
But there isn't anything you can't walk away from.
There isn't any challenge you can't overcome.
I want you to have that kind of belief in yourself.
Sometimes bad things, horrible things happen to good people.
Life isn't fair.
And it can be heart wrenching.
And if you're having one of those dark days, it's okay.
It's okay.
It's okay to feel that darkness.
Maybe you want to be nobody.
Maybe you're happy exactly where you are in life.
Maybe you don't have the determination to be somebody better than who you are.
This is real, dude.
This is real.
You have to envision something that is more powerful than you.
Something in you has to wake up.
And usually the only person that can wake it up is you.
But if you don't have a little flame, you know, just that, just barely, you're done.
I can't, I can't light it for you.
You know what's crazy? You know you can be the one if you really wanted to for you. You know what's crazy?
You know you can be the one if you really wanted to, right?
You know that, right?
But see, you keep playing the what if game.
What if it don't work out this?
What if it don't work out that?
What if it do?
What if it do work out?
Then what?
You gonna be happy, right?
You can't say you wanna win, but then you scared to lose.
What kind of sense does that make?
If you put your head down and lock it on the vision, how could you not win?
Only thing that's gonna cause you to lose is your mentality. But that's between you and you though.
You have to be open-minded to the possibilities that I can do this. Once you shut your mind down to the possibility that it can be achieved,
there's no way it can happen. So that's why my eyes and my body light up about things,
because I know that if you're in a fight you have to attack. You have to keep
attacking. The enemy has to know he is not going to give up. You must break the
soul of whatever the f**k is in front of you. That's what I realized. I was never breaking the soul of
anything in front of me. So that's why I came up with the thing called taking
souls in my book. I started to devise ways to break a soul of a human being of an object of whatever's in front of me
If you keep on attacking something nothing wants to stand in front of anything
That is relentless
Okay, something bad happens how much will affect my behavior?
Well, the person who is indestructible would have something terrible happen and then nothing with change
Yeah, people don't know how to manage their emotions.
I think the more, at least for me, the more I've tried to create space between how I feel and
what I do, the more consistent my outcomes have been.
I'm not feeling it or I'm feeling tired or things like that.
The more times I give into that excuse or that feeling,
then the more superstitious I become about doing it in the future.
Whereas a lot of times if I can just start when I am tired or when something is painful and then
still execute about the same as before, the more times you do what is required to get what you want, the more times you get what you want.
I had to stop thinking normal.
I had to stop thinking normal.
I can no longer be a common man walking around doing common things.
Who's the person that you care about the most in this world?
My mom. my mum. So if someone came and took your mum and put her in a cloud in the sky and the
only way that you could see her again is if you built a tower high enough to be able to
bring her back down or to be there again.
Would you wake up tomorrow and wonder why you or would you get building?
Being a winner is a curse.
It doesn't matter how much you've won before.
You're not a winner until you win again.
Let's go!
And again, and again.
Nothing is enough.
No one understands.
And you never want it to stop.
It's you gotta put your past behind you.
Look kid, bad things happen and you can't do anything about it, right?
Right.
Wrong! When the world turns its back on you, you turn your back on the world.
And I would always say, man, I'm just keep failing, keep failing. Why can't I get this?
But then I realized I keep failing at things because I'm shooting higher than everybody in the damn world.
Wow.
But the fact of the matter is, is if you want to be good, you really don't have a lot of choices.
Because it takes what it takes.
You have to do what you have to do to be successful.
So you have to make the choices and decisions to have the discipline and the focus to the process of what you need to do to accomplish your goals.
I'm asking you, whatever threatens you, threaten it back.
Whatever pushes against you, push it back.
Whatever wants to overwhelm you, like a father, stand up, take control,
and do battle with your enemies, wherever you find it.
Battle with your enemies wherever you find it. I think a hopeful message that anyone can think about who's in that hard period or in
that start period is that it won't get harder.
This is the hardest part.
And so if you can just make it through this, everything else is downhill.
It's not that the things that the dragons are going to slay aren't going to get bigger.
They are. But you become so much are going to slay aren't going to get bigger, they are.
But you become so much more equipped to slay them back.
And you have so many more allies. You have people in the stands cheering for you.
You have the audience. You have all of these other things that are behind you.
But in the beginning it's just you with a stick against a bear.
I was losing 106 pounds in three months.
The first two months or the first two weeks,
it's like I was gaining weight.
You know, I would lose a pound, gain two.
So I was just failing.
I kept failing and kept failing and kept failing.
So I had to teach myself how to fail right.
And what that means is when I fail,
I can't spend much time in that fail zone.
I have to be able to get up and get after the next day
just as fast because my goals were to be a Navy SEAL. I don't have time to stay here
and feel bad for myself for weeks and months and years because I'll lose that time. So the big thing
is know that if you have big goals and big dreams along the way failure is going to happen. So how
fast do you get up from that? You got to teach yourself that.
The biggest risk to your future isn't your competition. It's the distractions you insist
on keeping in your life rather than doing the things you know you should be doing but aren't.
People delay doing things they don't like for longer than it takes to do them.
Running six miles five days a week,
and that was my goal.
And so I just kept, I failed, I go back to scratch.
I used some positive motivation.
I have like one day where I'm like fucking defeated.
But I started realizing this is part of the process.
This is part of the journey.
I had to realize this is part of my process.
Versus just saying, like I used to,
I'm just not good enough.
If I'm not good enough, we always say that, I'm just not good enough. If I'm not good enough, we always say that s***.
I'm just not good enough and then we try something else.
I'm going to f***ing make myself good enough.
There's human beings that have different temperament
and different minds and different mentality
and a ruthless competitive drive
that's almost terrifying to the ordinary person.
That guy, if we were living a thousand years ago,
he would be on a horse with the biggest battle axe
waiting in the back, hacking heads off,
and everybody would be running.
And those people have always existed.
These dominators have always existed.
The world belongs to optimists.
Because if you're going to do anything big,
you have to believe that it can happen.
Otherwise it never will.
That Sean Puri thing.
The cynics get to be right and the optimists get to be rich.
Yeah.
Like, if you look at it from a percentage of success rate, I've been wrong more times
than I've been right.
I have failed more times than I've succeeded.
But you always succeed more and are right more
in the big ways than the people who've been right all along
and are wrong 99% right and 100% wrong.
So like, they're right 99% of the time,
but they're wrong 100% because the only thing that matters
is the big one at the end.
This won't last.
Or like this business idea. It's not
going to work and you might have nine failures. I felt my first nine businesses didn't really
amount to anything. Nine. I'm just painting this picture because like it's painful as s*** because
the whole time everyone is telling you I told you so and they're right. Today. But not forever.
Right.
Today.
But not forever.
You know the war that you have to really fight is the war against yourself.
You have to fight the war against yourself.
And it is not easy to look in the mirror
and to change your own life.
It's hard as hell.
You have to take responsibility.
You have to learn new things.
You have to feel uncomfortable. Good, because learn new things. You have to feel uncomfortable.
Good, because discomfort is how we grow.
That's how we become strong.
If you run away from discomfort and resistance
your whole life, you will always be weak.
After watching that film, I come to understand
if I can work that hard every day,
being blessed with the physical tools that I have what would my career be and I made a promise to myself from that day that I
was gonna work that hard every single day. The difference between successful
people and non-successful people is here. I'm no better than none of
y'all. I'm not a better person than you. I'm not a better Christian than you. God
don't love me more than you. None of that. If you want to be successful, you have to
change this. This has to change.
I don't look at failure as failure. I look at failure as your first, second,
third, fourth, fifth attempt.
I look at them as attempts.
I don't look at anything as failure.
Because when you're going to try to do something,
not trying is failure.
And that's not some after school special.
But when you're able to go out there, there is no failure. It's attempts. But when you're able to go out there,
there's no failure.
It's attempts.
Because when you're trying to do something
that's bigger than you, whatever you are,
whoever you are, if you're paralyzed,
you're trying to walk one step, and you didn't.
You didn't fail, mother.
That's your first attempt.
If that's your biggest thing,
that's how your mindset needs to go into everything.
So I don't look at it as, failure's a big word
that gets people down and gives so much power to words.
I don't.
I take the power right away.
I didn't feel shit.
Successful people see opportunity in every failure.
Normal people see failure in every opportunity.
Both are right.
Only one gets rich.
I like to see people do well.
I've been around a while, I know what it takes to do what you do. And I know that things don't just happen.
It's not just luck that you have.
You have to create that luck.
You have to will it into existence.
And I want you to know that I am always rooting for you.
I'm rooting for all of you.
The better you do in life and in your work,
the better every studio does,
the better every film does,
the better we all do,
the better it is for everyone.
So I look forward to seeing what you create in the future
and I will continue to do all that I can
to contribute and help this industry
and this art form that I love.
Some people, they don't wanna shoot panel
because they don't wanna shoot panel
because they don't feel confidence.
It's okay.
I respect that.
But Cristiano never will do that, never.
Even if I miss one time, I will shoot the second time.
If I lose the second time, I will shoot the third time.
I'm not afraid.
What do you do when you fail?
Other than death, all failure is psychological.
Other than death, all failure is psychological.
Think about that.
I'm going to fail.
I'm going to fail.
I'm going to fail.
I'm going to fail.
I'm going to fail.
And I will succeed
But here's what we do know it's possible for us to get through the winter
Here's what's exciting about the passing of time. It takes you through
Whatever you're experiencing at the moment. That's what time will do take you through the winter now
How do you handle the winters? Make this little note. You can get better and you can get stronger and you
can get wiser. There's no winter that you can't overcome. There's no winter that you
can't figure out how to survive. There's no winter powerful enough that you cannot. I'm
figuring out a way to get through it. Hang on, make this note, winters don't last forever.
There's no combatant, true combatant,
that has never gotten to the point
where there's nothing left.
When there's no physical strength left.
When there's no energy left.
When there's no speed left.
When there's no joy left, when there's no speed left, when there's no joy left in that fight, all they have left is the will to get back up again.
And they don't know how they're going to pick their fist up. They don't know how they're going to move their feet. They don't know how they're gonna take another swing. They don't know if they're gonna be able to get up
when that next punch ends up in that fight.
But that's all they got.
So they get up.
They get up.
I need to know, who am I?
Where do I belong?
Look, the point is, stop trying so hard to be something you're not.
Like so many things, it is not what is outside, but what is inside that comes.
You must be imaginative, strong-hearted.
You must try things that may not work.
And you must not let anyone define your limits because of where you come from.
You gotta let go of that stuff from the past, because it just doesn't matter.
If you focus on what you've left behind you will never be able to see
what lies ahead. Know that no one else will follow and I think if you can if
you can shift from this is hard to no one else will be able to do this then it
flips from being this thing that you're like oh poor me to oh poor everyone else
who's gonna have to fucking try. Yeah. And I think that is so much more motivating
as a frame for the exact same circumstance.
Women, which are based in either love or fear.
So many of us choose our path out of fear disguised as practicality.
What we really want seems impossibly out of reach and ridiculous to expect,
so we never dare to ask the universe for it.
I'm saying, I'm the proof that you can ask the universe for it. I'm saying I'm the proof that you can ask the universe for it
please
You have to sacrifice your lower self to your higher self in order for you to proceed in a healthy manner
to be resilient
If you decide to be rich today who gonna stop you who? If you decide you want to be rich today, who gonna stop you?
Who?
If you decide you want to be rich, all you gotta do is start.
Why not?
Who gonna stop you?
Unless you tell it to the wrong person.
Mama, mama, listen to me, I'm going to be rich.
Anybody rich in this family, go in there and sit out somewhere, Get yourself a good job. Oh, mama, you must be right. No, mama could be wrong.
If Mark can make it through some tough times, you can make it through. If Mark went through
some strenuous times, you can go through those strenuous times. When the nights were long
for Mark, I'm telling you, he made it, he made it, you can make it.
If I can make it, you can make it.
Just be calm when things are going well, be calm.
Don't think you're on top of the world in a sense.
You always gotta be wary because I've seen it,
I've seen people come, I've seen people go,
I've seen them come, I've seen them go.
You gotta be chill, you gotta like just take what's good in your life and move forward cautiously and carefully.
And thank God that you have that.
Just it's very, very important not to overextend yourself when you think you've got it.
It's no such thing. Everybody's dispensable.
Become the person who cannot quit.
Become the person who can say no to the things that they know they're supposed to say no to.
Become the person who makes the right decision regardless of the circumstances, regardless of the hardships,
regardless of the pain, regardless of the frustration. If you become that person, you
have no limits in your life. There is no stopping that person. And that is the only way to become who it is you truly want to be.
And so I invite you one last time this year.
Start today and in 365 days you will look back and you will say that was the day.
That was the day that everything changed.
That was the day that my life changed.
That was the day that my life changed. That was the day that my family changed.
That was the day my community changed,
my state changed, and my country changed.
Because I changed.
Make that day today.
The thing I hate the most is people going,
oh, you've got to be gentle with yourself.
Take an eye off, darling.
You've done too much already.
You've already earned your place.
No, no, I haven't.
No, I don't need time off.
No, I haven't earned my place.
No, I haven't done enough already.
That's why I'm feeling like this now.
It's a fact.
You can try and bend the truth
to whatever you want to bend it to, but the facts will
always tell you how it really is.
And if you feel like you haven't done enough, you probably haven't.
You know what's the number one way you measure somebody that's hungry?
Very simple.
Their sense of urgency.
That simple.
Let me explain to you why. So, people say, you have no idea
how hungry I am. Really? Yeah. What did you do about it today? Oh, not today, but tomorrow
I'm going to eat. You ain't hungry, man. You just think you're hungry. You are not hungry.
You may be hungry to go eat lunch. You may be hungry to go have dinner. Fine, I'll give
that to you. You ain't hungry to compete in the marketplace. Because a person who's hungry, this is how they work. I was watching an interview
earlier of Musk years ago. He said, I don't recommend you wanting to be like me. He says,
because you don't know how many hours I work. You don't know what it's like to be thinking
about wanting to win. You don't know what it was like every night going to sleep, thinking
Tesla's about to go out of business. When people say, hey, you think Tesla stock's going to go down, it's going to go up, it's
going to go down, it's going to go up.
But as long as Musk is behind it, he is so flipping hungry, which is urgent.
He's so urgent about executing things now that no matter what he touches, it's going
to grow because today he's hungry.
If you leave your zone of comfort, if you remove yourself from your father's tent, if you move away
from infantile materialistic satiation and go out into the terrible world and you do that
voluntarily, you have the adventure of your life, this is what will happen. You'll be a blessing to yourself. That's genuine.
So instead of being wracked with self doubt and being self conscious
and taking yourself apart with guilt and shame
you'll ride the wave of adventure and you'll feel that your life is a blessing.
Not only will you feel that, it will be a blessing.
That's the first thing that will happen.
I don't care how you get there. I don't care how you get there.
I don't care what you do to get there.
The goal is to win.
That's the passion that comes out of me.
Because that's, it takes everything for me to learn.
So when I speak about David Goggins,
I can't speak about David Goggins in a way that's just calm and cool.
Because when I wake up, I know the journey that takes for me to find my greatness. I can't speak about David Goggins in a way that's just calm and cool.
Because when I wake up, I know the journey that it takes for me to find my greatness.
And it's hard. Nothing is easy.
Nothing that's like, oh I wake up and I just do this or I do that.
I watch people every day go through life and it's so easy.
For me to be where I'm at today it takes every bit of me so
when I speak about it and as I get going here you'll start seeing me the
tip will rise, the passion will come out because I'm back there I'm doing what I
do every day to become a human being and so nothing is easy like running is
running it sucks but you have a choice to make.
Do you want to sit down and go back to that guy you once were?
If you feel like s***, there is a reason why.
If you know in your heart of hearts that you should do something, then guess what?
Get out there and f***ing get it done.
There's life and death and power in the tongue.
Be careful what you say.
Be careful what you say, be careful with the things you consistently talk about.
Because you're inviting that energy and vibration into your life.
I didn't teach myself victory first.
I taught myself failure.
I taught myself how to fail. People go, that's
so depressing, is it? When you're 300 pounds and you can't read and write and
you're fucked up, how many times you're gonna fail on that process? So if you don't know how
to fail, there is no victory. I never talked about winning because I knew the
path to winning was to be years of failing first so I taught myself how to
fail properly no one teaches you how to fail but if you're going out for
insurmountable odds that make absolutely no sense.
A black kid that can't swim 300 pounds will be a Navy SEAL.
Okay.
You better teach yourself how to fail first because if you sit in failure for too
long, you will never come out of it.
So the first part of my success
was learning how to fail properly.
And then eventually, I started getting a few victories.
But that's what people don't get.
When you have buried yourself in such a deep hole,
you better first talk about the failures
you're gonna have first.
And that's when that other voice comes up.
It tells you we gotta do something. It also tells you boy
I'm not gonna lie to you Goggins
You're in for a climb, bro
You're gonna get your ass handed to you
Made fun of the outside noise the inside noise both voices are gonna be telling you to go fuck yourself
You are in for hell, bro. I
Am so I better learn to fail
People don't want to see you better than them. That's what it comes down to you make them feel good about themselves
When you're fat and lazy
And you make them feel like shit when you come from the depths of hell and you decide to fucking make it
There's enough food and pie for everybody
Don't hate him because he worked harder than you stay hard embrace the journey and the process of life
You only get stronger hiking by going uphill
Nobody gets stronger hiking by just going downhill
stronger hiking by just going downhill.
Do you know how many times I haven't been able to run?
Two heart surgeries, multiple knee surgeries, and after every knee surgery, they say not to run again. And I'm fine with that.
There's no running up here, bro. None. This was what it was all about.
That's what they lost. We can't run.
When you can find drive in your own doubt, fear, insecurities, you become very unstoppable.
When you feel that pressure inside of you and it's very heavy, like weather that's
very heavy and thick, you're motivated, you feel it, I've got to get up in the morning,
I've got to do this, I've got to accomplish this.
When that pressure goes away and you don't feel any pressure in your life,
you can do anything and there's no consequences for it.
You'll just waste time, you'll waste years, you'll waste months,
you'll never accomplish anything. You give somebody a deadline,
right? They'll accomplish in two months what it would take somebody two years to do without a deadline.
I mean we can be average at what we do.
I mean we can be good at what we do.
Or we can be excellent or we can be elite.
And everybody has a choice as to what they want to do and how they want to do that.
But if you're going to be excellent or elite, you got to do special things.
You have to have special intensity, you have to have special focus, you have to have a special commitment and drive and passion to do things
at a high level and a high standard all the time. And it doesn't matter what God-given
ability that you have, that probably can make you good. But without the rest of it, I'm
not sure you ever get excellent or elite.
Don't be afraid to fail. Anything I've ever attempted, I was always willing to fail.
You can always win, but don't be afraid of making decisions. You can't be paralyzed by fear or
failure, or you will never push yourself.
You keep pushing because you believe in yourself and in your vision and you know that it's
the right thing to do and successful comes.
So don't be afraid to fail.
Don't listen to the naysayers.
I mean how many times have you heard that you can't do this, you can't do that and
it has never been done before.
I hear this all the time.
I love it when someone says, no one has ever done this before, because they mean I do it.
That means that I'm the first one that has done it.
So pay no attention to the people who say you can't be done.
Just remember, you can't climb the ladder of success with your hands in the pocket.
If the lion is the king of the jungle, how can he be the king of the jungle?
If he's not the biggest, the elephant is probably one of the biggest.
He can't be the fastest because that's a cheetah.
He can't be the smartest.
So he's not the biggest, the fastest, or the smartest. So he's not the biggest, the fastest or the smartest. So how does a
lion become the king of the jungle? His mentality. That's the only difference of a lion and an
elephant. When male lion walks
up he may be outnumbered by a pack of hyenas. But I'm king of my jungle because of my mentality.
What is it that drives you forward? What motivates you still?
Well, my best words is dedication and hard work.
To achieve these kind of things you need to work hard and be a great professional, be
serious in your job.
And this is what I try to do.
To be here for eight time I it's not by coincidence. It's because, you know, we all have talent,
but talent without the work, it's nothing.
But I'm gonna ask you one more time.
I'm gonna ask you to go look in the mirror.
I'm gonna ask you to take responsibility for where you are
and admit to yourself that you are where you are
because of decisions that you made, because to yourself that you are where you are because of
decisions that you made because of weakness that you had because of your
lack of ability to do the hard things when things got hard that's why you are
where you are you know it and I know it so take responsibility for that take
ownership of that.
And start right now fixing that.
You need to work on yourself.
If you just try to be pampered, and if you're trying to be soft,
and if you're trying to be the victim
and go, you're not gonna go anywhere.
We need to get stronger.
We need to get bossier. We need to get tougher.
We need to not be afraid of failure.
We gotta go into the work.
We gotta face adversity.
Adversity breeds character.
The strength and fighting and resistance
does not only make the muscle grow,
but it makes also your head grow,
makes you a stronger person.
We have to be willing to go through hardship,
through suffering, through pain, through crying periods.
All of that stuff, don't shy away from any of that
because it just makes you stronger.
If someone prays for patience, do you think God gives them patience?
Or does he give them the opportunity to be patient?
If you pray for courage, does God give them courage?
Or does he give them the opportunity to be courageous?
Now fear is going to be a player in your life.
You get to decide how much.
You can spend your whole life imagining ghosts, worrying about the pathway to the future,
but all there will ever be is what's happening here.
And the decisions we make in this moment.
I have to understand, like, why he works like that.
So after games I'm like, hey, Kobe, like, why were you in the gym for so long he's like cuz I saw you come in and I wanted you to know that it
doesn't matter how hard you work that I'm willing to work harder than you
kind of every mother ain't gonna do what I'm gonna do that's a level of for me I
was more miserable trying to make everyone else happy than I am now with
everyone else unhappy with me.
Because when nobody's looking,
that's the time that really counts.
That's the time that really matters.
The working out at five, six a.m.
and then all the practices and all the extra conditioning.
That work that you do every single day is key,
because that's what you're gonna be able to fall back on,
and that's what you're gonna be able to rely on when push comes to shove.
If a person would sit down and let their body relax,
totally relax, and then start to visualize in their mind,
see themselves the way they want to see themselves,
write out a description of how you'd like to see yourself.
Start to read it and read it and read it and read it every day carry it around and keep reading it
The one point that all the great teachers all down through history have all agreed on they've been in complete unanimous agreement on it
We become what we think about
Now it may be fantasy at first it might even appear to us as being a lie
But if you read it often
enough you'll start to believe it. And when William James said, believe in your belief
will create the fact you will see the person's personality change. I watch people in the
seminary's personality change right in front of my eyes and all they're doing is starting
to see themselves differently, starting to think different thoughts.
This next generation is just such a group of p man I just for the small group of savages
out there run these kids right over man run them all over that was always my mentality nobody's
ever gonna work me so it should be yours you out there that are listening right now there's never
been more opportunity than there is today getting up at four o'clock in the morning every day before anybody else and
Grounding my thought process is in the no one will outwork me
No one
Mother will not work me
All starts with this
Two hands putting it to work. I'm already working
all of the hours that I'm awake and I've
already given up Saturdays so the only thing that I have left is like Sundays
and evenings. I am no longer going to be watching any football and I'm no longer
going to have Netflix at all. That's what I'm sacrificing and I think a lot of
people create these to-do lists
when in my experience it's been so much more useful
to write down all the things that I'm willing to sacrifice.
Because if you sacrifice everything,
there's nothing left than to do the one thing that matters.
I discovered work ethic and how far I could push myself,
and I discovered one immutable truth.
I could get so good that people would be terrified
to lose me.
There you go.
And in fact, Kobe has a quote that's even better,
which is booze don't block dunks.
You can get so good, people can't stop you.
I could go back to that moment
and just not be afraid, just recognize that,
look, whatever could be out out there I could have it.
A warrior is not always that. A warrior is a m****** who says, hey I'm here again today.
I'm here again tomorrow. I'm gonna be here the next day. I'm 50 years old and I'm still getting after it.
It's a person that puts no limit on what's possible.
There is no excuse for not being the hardest worker. Yeah someone might be bigger, stronger, faster, quicker, younger, whatever else, but there
is no excuse to not be the hardest f**king worker there.
And when you believe that you have the ability to do something, that the life that you're
living right now is going down this direction, you f**king hate where it is, there is nothing
else to do but to change direction.
A belief that, I cannot go that way anymore.
I gotta go this way.
And what do you have to lose?
You know the outcome if you continue the same shit.
Why not just commit one time in your life to something?
See what happens.
There are no losers in the world of passion and commitment to something.
No one loses there.
The losers are the people that sit the starting line
and never initiate.
It's the belief that supremacy exists.
There's so many examples in the Olympics.
And every day we see the common man with the odds against him
overcoming what people thought could never happen.
And probably he'd even think it.
But there he stands victorious and a role model to all of us like oh my god we want to be him but before he was him he
was us what got him there was an undying belief and every drop of sweat that came
out and every pain and ache and everything else was just a telltale sign
they'd been closer and closer to that dream that we were when we were kids are being a reality
Why not believe in it
What's the other option?
There is no other option
It's a life-forgotten man. I'd like to know what's the biggest key to your personal success?
Who is heart of course talent without work is nothing.
You're going to lose sleep. You'll doubt whether it'll work. You'll stress to make ends meet.
You won't finish your to-do list. You'll wonder whether you made the right call and have no way to know for years.
This is what hard feels like, and that's okay. Everything worth doing is hard and the more worth
doing it is the harder it is the greater the payoff the greater the hardship. If
it's hard good it means no one else will do it. More for you.
Why are you out running 435 o'clock in the morning and not later in the day or
why do fighters do that? Because I don't want to do it. It's not when you shift the disciplines
or do things that you don't want to do.
I don't like it when I get up for a run.
I realized, man, if I want to be good,
I got to wake up in the morning, I got to do the extra work
and I got to show up when other guys aren't
and I've got to learn,
I've got to continue to be open to learning,
focus on what you can control,
focus on what you're getting,
not what anyone else is getting.
Whenever you get an opportunity, you take advantage of it.
You treat it like it's the Super Bowl.
You treat it like it's game day.
Go out there and treat practice like no one else does.
You have no idea how great you really are
because you are using such minimal, minimal
of what you have.
So in this job, you're looking for cockroaches, looking
for rodents and stuff like that. And this next morning or this next night I went to
work and I hit the, I don't like cockroaches too much. I hit the mother load of cockroaches
and this restaurant got full of cockroaches and rodents and everything else. And I sat
there and said, this is my life. I said this is my life you
are exactly who the f*** this is it and I said this ain't gonna be it for me. So in
that restaurant I quit my job left my canister in that restaurant my spray canister got back
in my eco lab truck and I went home and I started working out like somebody I was I
became the most obsessed person on the planet Earth.
And then just work like hell. I mean you just have to put in
80 to 100 hour weeks every week.
All those things improve the odds of success.
If other people are putting in 40 hour work weeks and you're putting in
100 hour work weeks and you're putting in 100 hour work
weeks, then even if you're doing the same thing, you know that you will achieve in four
months what it takes them a year to achieve.
If you have one good day where you eat clean, you drink a lot of water like you did, you
got that day, you woke up, you put your shoes on, you went for a run, you worked out your
driveway, you got a good day in.
That's sometimes all you need to do and decide, this is what I do from now on, I have good
days.
Tomorrow's going to be another good day, and then I'm going to force myself into another
good day.
And the next thing you know, I've got some momentum.
My legs are all beat down, always me tired, feel like sh**.
But guess what?
I know, how about days off?
One day but not today.
Hang on a second man. You can f***ing achieve the absolute impossible.
You don't need great parents. You don't need like a private school.
You don't need to have this humongous GPA and all that sort of s***.
What you need is the one thing I talked about in my book, which is straight up brutal work ethic.
You have to be willing to outwork everybody in the world.
From the social group I had before I quit my job,
if we're going all the way like ground zero to today,
I talked to no one from that time in my life
compared to today.
And I was absolutely miserable and unhappy and unfulfilled.
And I would say that the majority of those people
probably don't like me today because I changed.
I didn't do what I was supposed to do.
He thinks he's so fancy now, et cetera, et cetera.
And I think I'm just okay with that.
And so I think coming to terms with the idea
that I could be absolutely rejected by everyone I know,
but like me, I was more okay with that because the
alternative was I didn't want to live anymore and so obviously there's
degrees and there's continuums and there's stages of where people are at with that
but as that being the taken to its logical extreme would I rather live for
them than live for me I would rather be hated by everyone and like myself
everyone does a few reps when it burns starts. No one goes the extra mile and keeps going.
Like no one's in here right now. Why? Because it's Saturday evening and everyone's going to party. No one's in here. Just me.
You know, no one goes the extra mile. The thing about traffic jams, guys, there are no traffic jams in the last mile of the race. It's just you and your shadow. In the beginning,
everybody's there. All the pretenders and the contenders, they're all there. For the last
yard of life, the last mile of the journey, ain't nobody but you and your shadow. Traffic jams don't
exist that far. Because everyone else is already giving up.
That's what I like too. The mental concept. I'm going that far. I love the physical high of the burn being released. I love the mental high that I've improved myself. I love the mentality that
I'm just beating my competitors silently when they don't even know it. They're out partying.
I'm out here getting ahead. I'm not good enough, smart enough.
I'm not talented enough to do that.
Some people are.
Some people can start at one.
Some people don't have to start at all.
If you lack talent, you can't sit back and say,
I'll start in half an hour.
I can't do that. I got to start now. I think it's really profound in terms of how quickly people move through life in
terms of achieving the goals that they set out because people are like, how did
that, how is that guy so young and he's achieved X, Y, and Z? It's like, well,
what takes you a month to make a decision, we make it an hour and then the
next hour I make another decision that takes a year next month.
And so like that's how you can go 30 times
or a hundred times faster than the quote average person
who's overweight, has a thousand dollars in their bank
account, you know, and is gonna die at 70.
And after I get back from starting, I got to start again.
And then when I get done with that run or that study
session, if it wasn't good enough, I got to go back again.
Cause repetition is what taught me everything so you can honestly outwork
anything. Reminder that if you want to be exceptional you're going to be
different from everyone else that's what makes you exceptional you can't fit in
and also be exceptional both have discomfort when you fit in you have
internal conflict because you're not being 100% you. When you're exceptional, you have external conflict because everyone sees you
as different. Pick one. When your friends start to say, you've changed, remember it's
because they don't know how to say, you've grown.
I'd say just listen to yourself. Don't listen to anybody else. Not one person because, God forbid, anything went wrong,
you can't blame other people and start pointing the finger.
Always know that you're only to blame yourself
because you made that decision.
And whatever you do in life, never regret it.
Never if, but, shoulda, woulda, coulda.
Give everything while you can, when you can,
and leave nothing to behind.
No one's gonna come to help me. No one's gonna come to help me.
No one's gonna come to help me.
It's me against me, period.
I didn't have a, come wake me up
at three o'clock in the fucking morning
and say, hey, you gotta get your shit in.
I had no trainer.
I didn't have a nutritionist.
It was a self-discipline that I had to survive,
to not survive, survive, I was weak, to thrive.
No one said, hey man, you're 297 pounds man I
won't help you out I'll help hey man you're fucking you're not smart I'm gonna
I'm gonna help you out I had to work at all this I had to overcome and it
self disciplines everything if you don't have it I don't look at you right, because I know you're capable of more.
It's not discipline so much for me.
It's all on you.
It's all on you.
The self part is what's big.
For the next two years,
all I'm gonna do is get good grades.
I didn't date, I didn't party, I didn't drink.
I literally didn't leave my dorm room.
I worked.
I put my head down for two years and I just worked. So today I decided to try to PR my long run. So the first half of the run
I'm feeling great. My mind is clear, nothing going on. Think about nothing but
my just my running pace. What I'm doing, my breathing, everything like that. Get to
mile 15, I turn around and the demons start to creep in. That inevitable wall
is creeping up on me me when you push so hard
Something's about to give and I start to give
My mind started to break down. I started feeling my legs starting to hurt. I started feeling dehydrated
Started feeling sorry for myself start looking around
No one knows I'm not here running. Why don't you go ahead just stop call your girl?
Have her pick you up and
that's when I feel like a little and this is when your mind has to change you got to
start thinking I'm the grittiest mother in the world your dehydration your legs are all
sore you feel like got shin splints and stress fractures no you don't you got sore legs get
out of your head and stay hard. I called the Rocky cutscene and almost every successful person that I have ever encountered
has gone through not a month or a year, but many years of doing work without reward where
they have to do things that other people find boring and they have to sacrifice things that
everyone finds interesting that most people want to do during that entire season of their life and they basically sacrifice a season of other
things that they would prefer to do to do stuff that they would not prefer to
do because of the one thing they want most and that's the Rocky cutscene and
instead of lasting five minutes it just usually lasts five or ten years.
Never seen myself as particularly talented.
Where I excel is I'm willing to die
in the process of acquiring skill.
There is no perfect time to start.
You gotta start now with changing your life.
We're all being tested in life.
And guess what?
This is one test you can't cheat on.
We all have our own test.
Some of us are obese.
Some of us are depressed.
Some of us are insecure.
In the military, we have this big old rucksack on the back
that have batteries, water, extra gear.
Your extra gear is just dealing with the life.
And the only way to overcome it
is for you and you alone to face it.
You have to do your best work when you're least motivated. So those days you don't want to do it, guess what you gotta do?
You gotta second the fuck and do it.
Like I want to see what you do when you're tired.
Let me see how you push yourself.
Come on man, get up. Get up again tomorrow.
Get up again tomorrow. Get up again tomorrow.
The next day. Get up. Get up. Get up. Get up.
Keep going. How long can you maintain a positive attitude? So what's the great divide
of human beings? Who are you on those days you don't want to do things? It's easy to When it's good weather, you got good sleep, work's going good, the family's good, you
feel great, your body's not injured.
Those are easy days to conquer, but who are you on those fucking days when all hell's
broke loose your body's fucked up, you're sore, you're depressed,
you're miserable, you're not the favorite person at school, you might be getting bullied,
you might be falling behind in life.
Who are you on those days when shit's all fucked up?
That's the great divide. Those people who get up on those days
when everything's f**ked up and still grind, that's the separator right there. Stay hard.
We're here to get stronger. In order to get stronger we must fail, accept that,
know that, that who we are right now is not who we are but where we are
And we're going forward with the belief, our belief guys drives this workout
Believe in the difference you can be, stop being average when your potential is trying to come outside of you more than that
Two forms of pain, pain that breaks you and the pain that changes you
That's the pain of a change right there, that's the pain of a change right there That's a pain of progress the pain that destroys you isn't this
It's later in life knowing you could have been more and all that's left is you and the key mirror and tears of a possibility left
That you allow to die own your life guys you have every opportunity
There's no excuse not to be the hardest
You have every opportunity. There's no excuse not to be the hardest worker in the room. In all your endeavors, schoolwork, the gym, your career, your relationship,
your name's attached to it. It's gotta mean more than anything. That's your name. It's all you got.
Play it out. What if you just never do anything? Is like maybe some people just need to stop dreaming.
Maybe they need to accept their current reality
and actually enjoy it.
Because there's a lot of people when they're 70 and 80
and they didn't do their dreams.
And if they went back, like they didn't do anything
but that whole time they were dissatisfied
because they didn't try.
But what if they were just like, I have a good life.
I have a wife who loves me.
I've got some kids.
I have a job that I, you know,
like I don't mind it, pays the bills.
I mean, if you go back 500 years,
there wasn't people like, man, this is my passion.
It's like, dude, I'm just rowing,
rowing a boat across a ferry, and that's what I do,
and that's what my dad did, and his dad did.
Like, this is how we eat.
And so like, we have these, these idealized versions
of purpose that I think Instagram and all this stuff
kind of make terrible, but like,
I think there's a lot of honor in work, period.
And I think a lot of people fool themselves
by thinking that what they do for some reason
is not honorable.
And I think a lot of it is the internal
versus external scorecard of,
I was saying what I said earlier about,
I believe these things to be true about the universe
or the world, but a lot of those are like,
what do I believe about myself?
Which is like, I can choose to do work in this way,
which then I can derive joy from.
So like, if I'm shoveling shit,
I can choose to be like, I will be the best shit shoveler
because I believe that I will figure out
how to do this more efficiently and I will, you know,
I will get better and I'll have calc's on my hands
and I'll have a better back and whatever.
But I will do this well.
And I think you can find joy in work if you decide to do it well.
So, on one hand, if you are, if your dream causes you so much pain, then you will quit what you're doing and do it.
And if it doesn't cause you enough pain that you're not pursuing it or that you don't, like if you don't feel like you're in a cage right now,
then maybe you're not in a cage. And maybe you just need to like the life you have and that's cool too.
The other thing that's so interesting about being alive
is that you're all in.
No matter what you do, you're all in.
This is gonna kill you.
So I think you might as well play
the most magnificent game you can while you're waiting
because do you have anything better to do?
I worked on my gift.
I realized that all of us are born with a gift but you got to hone it.
You know it's just not you're not going to become great.
You know greatness is upon you and I realized that my gift wasn't going to create itself.
My gift wasn't going to nurture itself.
My gift wasn't going to perfect itself, my gift wasn't going to perfect itself,
that was something I had to do.
And so, man, before you know it,
we did a video that went viral,
I think it's got over 50 million hits now,
and we turned.
You know, very few people bet on the underdog.
But if you would have, you were the one big,
and that happened to be us, we bet on ourself.
Sometimes you have to let other people's dreams
for your life die, for yours to live.
And for me it was like when I continued to every day
not want to wake up, that was my wake up call.
Where I was like, either I continue to live this way
and not want to be alive.
Or I just risked the fact that I'll die to everybody else.
And I think that it was the hardest decision
of my entire life, by far. All the fact that I'll die to everybody else and I think that that like it was the hardest decision my entire life
By far all this all the hard stuff it went through still the hardest decision
Well, if you make all the right decisions, but you have like you absolutely think that it's impossible for you
But you still do the right things you will win. So what keeps me going? I've quit several things
I know what's on the back end of quitting. It's a lifetime of thinking
about why the f*** did I do that? And I ain't doing nothing.
Everybody's great when they're not tired. The champions is when they tired, that's
when the real champions come out. That's when a real dog come out. Because if you
go piss like a puppy, stay on the porch and let the big dogs eat. Let them on the field.
Have some heart.
Every day is just constant improvement,
constant curiosity, constantly getting better.
The results don't really matter.
It's the figuring out that matters.
Do not give up.
Do not feel like you tired.
When you tired, think of last year
and think of that record.
Every time I get tired or I think I can't go no more
I think of the record that ain't us we can make it we got to believe we got to
be mentally strong but we tired that's where we got put our fundamentals
together that's what we got to be more focused there's not a book of that sub
there's not a car there's not a person. Everybody's in their beds, sleep dreading that it's a Monday. Hate it's a Monday. And I'm loving it. I'm loving that. Where
everybody's getting weaker, I'm getting stronger. It's not about the running, the swimming,
the push-ups, the sit-ups. It's about what those things do for your mentality. You don't
get better on the daggone couch. You get better by coming out here and getting the after every daggone day.
We're not on this stage just because of talent or ability.
We're up here because of 4 a.m.
We're up here because of two a days or five a days.
We're up here because we had a dream
and let nothing stand in our way.
If anything tried to bring us down,
we used it to make us stronger.
We were never satisfied, never finished, we'll never be retired.
My high school English teacher, Mr. Fisk, he had this beautiful quote, and it read,
rest at the end, not in the middle.
And I took that to heart.
I believe there's time for resting at the end, but for me that time is not now.
To have a dream, sacrifice for it, and never ever rest in the middle. My personal goal is to squeeze
every ounce of potential out of whatever I have, and I think that if you feel like you have potential
left over, then it will eat you alive until you do something about it. If you haven't gotten what you
want, then you're not worthy of it. Period. And that's okay.
Now you can admit that you suck and improve.
Better to know you're bad for a season than pretend you're good for a lifetime.
You're not making as much money as you want, because you're not as good as you think you are.
You're not struggling from imposter syndrome. You're a student and pretending to be a teacher.
No students say they feel like frauds for trying to learn. You're a fraud when you
get up to teach the class, and you've never done it.
When you push yourself that hard, you sleep easy at night. And it's not because you're
physically tired. It's not because physically you're worn out, they sleep easy. It's not because you're physically tired. It's not because physically you're worn out,
they sleep easy. It's that by going, the physical exhaustion, your brain can finally
rest knowing you give it your all. You have control of this. This belongs to you. This is yours. You're the captain, you're the master, you're the
foreman, you're the general, you're the head. Don't give control of this to nobody.
The harder and harder you work in here, the harder and harder it becomes to accept failure out there
Second place isn't an option anymore guys
The more you give in here the more you get out there
Why would you not want to give it at all What else are you gonna do?
You come here kill it right now
Or stay home on the couch, you know watching the light pass by I know it
sounds like a bitch will I say all the time but sometimes you got it ingrained in
your head what else would you be doing right now
take that time off I'll take that time to get ahead it's just that seems so
simple to me that solution that I'll know the choices there if it doesn't
seem so so easy to you it's because you don't believe in yourself you believe in yourself
You want to be in here killing it just give you that much more of a chance because you believe you can come that
But people don't come in here because they're tired of stuff or people that don't believe in themselves
That's why I don't see the asset of being in the gym to grow. They see as a waste of time
Because they don't believe they can ever get there.
So therefore why take the precautionary steps
to sharpen and hone the arsenal to really go to battle?
Because they don't even want to go to battle
because they know they're going to lose.
You got to get real doggish.
You got to get downright funky if you want to make it.
Now like I was telling you before,
if you want to be ordinary, you ain't even gotta listen to me.
Just go about your business.
Every single morning, you want a positive reinforcement, or do you want a negative one to go about your day?
How do you want people to see you?
Like that? You know?
Or like that? It's your priority.
This comes off, the sweat, replaced by that.
Best part about it is once you have this, you got this too.
You just give a shit at people.
People know that you have the ability to do at least one thing right in your life.
And they're willing to bet you can do something else right too.
They give you the opportunity and you take your trained talent and you marry that to the person you want to be.
Last step success, once you have it all, you give it back.
There's someone else, flying his way up.
That's a complete lie.
Here's the fact, all of you have extraordinary capabilities.
All of you.
You have to decide if you are willing to do the things to put you in that category.
Do you actually want to do this or not?
Because if you actually want to do it,
what's going to stop you?
Nothing.
And if you don't really want to do it,
what's going to stop you?
Just about anything that comes up.
Your excuses will take everything
that you ever wanted from you,
if you let them.
Go try and accomplish something that's hard.
You may win, you may lose,
you may succeed, you may fail.
I'll tell you what, you'll be better. If you avoid those things that are hard, if you don't accept
that challenge, if you don't step up and step into that cold water, just get up, move towards
that challenge, whatever that challenge is, and you're gonna fail, and you're gonna fail, and you're gonna fail, and you're gonna fail,
and then you're gonna win.
So the goal was to be the first one at breakfast.
So I set my alarm, I make sure I'm up by sunrise,
I get out of bed, I put on my gear and I head downstairs.
But when I get there, Kobe's already there with ice
packs on his knees drenched in sweat now it took me a minute to figure it out but
this guy wasn't only awake before me he had already worked out he had just
played in the finals days earlier meanwhile Meanwhile, I'd been off for months
and I was still exhausted.
What he had done that morning was incomprehensible to me.
That dedication he had only days after falling short
of an NBA championship.
That taught me something I've never forgotten.
Legends aren't defined by their successes.
They're defined by how they bounce back from their failures.
And if you're not strong mentally, and you have no willpower,
you're going to continue falling back in this hole, versus a man that sits back and goes,
alright, motherfucker, this is why I cuss, because this is what is in me.
This is what it took for me to be me. Sorry.
It didn't take, hey, okay,
we're gonna do this today.
No, this really sucks.
This is real, dude.
This is real.
And every day, I'm set back, I'm set back,
I'm set back, I'm set back.
So this is what I would tell your boy.
This is exactly what I tell him.
Every day you wake up, you're gonna probably be set back
for the first four weeks before you lose
To significant weight because of the mind is gonna be with you the whole time. There's no dopamine
There's no dopamine in there at 300 pounds. You got nothing your hormones are shot
You have to envision something that is more powerful than you
Something has to get you out of bed
and you have to create it.
It has to be false.
Cause you're not it.
You're a fat piece of shit and that's the reality of it.
So you have to create a false reality
to live in that just to get to work on yourself.
That's the reality.
If you tell yourself the truth,
and the truth is I'm not happy with where I'm at,
that's the truth.
The truth is I can do more.
The truth is I can work harder than I'm working right now.
The truth is I can do more for my family.
The truth is I can do much better than I'm doing right now.
And if that's the real truth,
if that's what you believe,
if you believe that to be the truth,
you won't have to find more discipline.
Discipline will find you.
I'm gonna say something to you.
You're smart, you're talented,
and you know a few things,
but talent means nothing in this game
if you don't make the right choices.
There's plenty of talented people out there
who never see the light of day anymore. Last thing, takes discipline. Because this whole game is one big long shot
and if you don't have the discipline to stay away from the flyers or from the gambles or
whatever else you want to call a stupid move, then my friend I'm afraid to say one day you
will go down. It's inevitable. You want my advice? Make a list of everything you want now and then plan on spending the next 25 years of your life getting it slowly piece by piece

Overthink everything and actually if you're quite a smart guy and you're ambitious and you have big
Aspirations for life you're gonna overthink this because you're thinking is this the best use of my time?
Could I be doing something better maybe I should
be doing what he's doing but no you don't need to necessarily do what he's
doing you just need to stay in your lane but just take inspiration do more think
less action removes doubt the more you do the less you have time to doubt and
overthink things everything changed for me when I realized that we're not meant
to feel excited and perfect all the time. I started accepting that where I am right now is where I'm genuinely meant to be.
Tough days are all a part of the process.
Lean into them.
Bad days are also part of a very good and meaningful life.
So on my toughest days, I think about getting through one more day, one more workout, one
more rep.
Why do I stand up here?
I stand upon my desk to remind myself that we must constantly look at things in a different way.
See, the world looks very different from up here.
There can be no growth without goals.
As soon as he said, you do not rise to the level of your goals, you fall to the level of your systems,
I think people stopped thinking about goals.
And he made a really great argument,
which was everybody at the start line of the hundred meter race has the same
goal to win. So it's not the person who has the best goals.
It's the person who has the best systems and preparation.
Never try to be better than someone else.
Always learn from others and never cease trying to be the best you could be.
That's under your control.
And if you get too engrossed and involved and concerned in regard to things over which
you have no control, it will adversely affect the things over which you have control.
You gotta want it first. Then you gotta work it. Then you have the opportunity to win it.
But it all starts with your wonk. You gotta wonk this. I can't wonk this for you.
You gotta wonk this like no other.
Then the work has to happen.
And see, the work and the wonk gotta add up together
to wonk each other.
Then that puts you in a position to win.
Ain't nobody giving you no W.
The person you have to spend the most time listening to
in your life is yourself.
Try not to lose their respect.
How on earth do you think that you're going to be able
to move mountains and get out of that relationship
that you don't like and move countries or change career
when you can't not hit snooze, even though last night
you promised yourself that you weren't going to hit snooze?
And it's how people that are able to do extraordinary things
have been able to get there.
Whatever I'm afraid to do, I do it.
And that's my personality.
Right now, I'm scared to death.
The fight gets closer, the less nervous I become, because
it's reality.
And in reality, I'm invincible.
Losers let it happen.
Winners make it happen.
Losers see thunderstorms. Winners see rainbows. Losers see it happen, winners make it happen. Losers see thunderstorms, winners see rainbows.
Losers see icy streets, winners put on their ice skates.
Losers take chances, winners make choices.
It's all in the way you choose to think.
I believe style is irrelevant.
I believe it's the morale behind the style.
I think success in fighting in life is about desire and the will.
How bad do you want it? Is it worth dying for?
That's the true greatness is the willingness to die.
So is this thing worth greatness?
These are the years where you need to put in the work, you need to grind,
and you don't need to be focused on everybody else
because you stay in focus on everybody else you stay in focus on the world
It's giving you a false sense of reality like sometimes you just need to unplug you just you will increase your
confidence
If you don't get what you want you suffer
And even when you get exactly what you want, you still suffer because you
can't hold on to it forever.
America was built on the backs of men who smoked cigarettes, drove without seat belts
and had bacon for breakfast. If you miss your biohacking routine this morning, you're going
to be okay. There's a time for leverage, but there's also a time for violence, which is just brute force. People get really obsessed with optimal, which is
getting the most bang for your buck. But there's also maximizing, which is just getting the
most bucks. You lose more life trying to optimize everything than just living it. The stress
of trying to be perfect is killing you more quickly than your imperfections.
Life is a mystery. Don't waste time trying to figure it out.
Humor.
Keep a sense of humor, especially by yourself. It is a strength beyond all measure.
Change.
Nothing stays the same.
The quote that I live by, early to bed, early to rise, makes a man young wealthy and wise.
Your haters will become your congratulators.
And the more stones they throw at your ass, your mansion gonna get bigger.
You want to be that one mother f**ker that every day, whether it's raining, snowing, sleeting, you lost every dime.
Your mom died, your dad died. You come and you bring the energy that it takes to make a team function at the highest level every day
and that's the person you want to be every day of your life. The stoic
philosopher is the man who has liberated himself from fear. He's not afraid of
death, he's not afraid of pain, he's not afraid of other people's dismissal as a
fool. The only
thing he cares about is that he should meet his moral obligations. Greatness is
the perception that virtue is enough. An organized soul which pursues rationally
the ends which are good for all human beings. That's the stoic conception of
virtue. They finally understand their greatness consists in the fact that they
perceive that virtue is enough. Because while everybody's over here being cool
and I tell people this all the time there's no future in cool. That's a trend
that's a fad. It comes and it goes just like dope money. Dope money comes quick
and leaves quicker. Okay we're here for a slow but a for show. This is a marathon
not a sprint. Passo corto, Vita lagga, which is short steps, long vision.
General ambition gives you anxiety.
Specific ambition gives you direction.
There is nothing more anxiety inducing than I want to be better and I don't know what
at and I don't know how.
Remember it's not what you have but what you do with what you have that separates winners
from losers.
It's not what happens to you, but how you respond to what happens to you that counts.
In the final analysis, your response to the adversity of life is the real measure of who
you are and what you're made of.
The Greek philosopher Epictetus once said that circumstances do not make the man or
woman, they merely reveal him to himself
I'm fascinated by courage and hope and self-belief and and faith in order to do
to let go of something good for the chance at something that you think could
be great it was a big risk it was a big chance and it was no guaranteed return
ticket it was a one-way ticket possibly to I'm a head coach of high school football to
this day. One-way ticket to a dead end. If you've tried several, several, several,
several times to complete whatever mission is in front of you and you can't. Sometimes
it's not meant to be. But that said, there's very few times it's not meant to be. So sometimes
you need to fucking throw in the towel, but there's a lot of times when throwing in the
towel too early will take away your shot at the person that you should have been. Let me state it this way, will your belief that you're going
to be viewed as a failure by your uncle be the sole reason that you live the
rest of your life below your potential and regret everything that you don't do
because of Uncle Tom. The $50,000 a year person doesn't do. But the winners do it. What do they do?
They do whatever it takes to get the job done.
They do it and do it and do it and do it and do it until the job gets done.
And then they talk about how great it is to be somebody they're proud of.
We need leaders in America who can do it.
If you want to become somebody, do it. If you want to become somebody, do it.
If you want to go and business for yourself, do it.
If you want to become financially independent, do it.
He pays the price a little bit more.
He works hard and a little bit more.
He's loyal to the country a little bit more.
He bleeds a little bit more.
He makes money a little bit more.
He saves money a little bit more.
If you want to win, you got gotta be tough and you can't quit.
When it comes to kind of like potential energy versus reality for people on their way up,
there's this huge time delay between when we start behaving in a way that a winner behaves
and when we start winning. And the problem is that the bigger the mountain you're trying to climb, the bigger the W you're trying to get,
typically the more delayed it is.
Longer the lag.
Yeah. Between when you start behaving like a winner and when you start being a
winner.
And most people don't get the fast enough feedback loop to know that they're
on the right path when they are taking these first steps in the right direction,
because they
have this really big goal but they forget that with that really big goal comes the even
longer delay that it takes to get there.
I need the positive reinforcement but the positive reinforcement is coming from me.
Internally.
There's only one way I know to beat people who copy you.
Get bigger.
It's not by direct conflict but by making them shrink into irrelevance
by comparison.
I'm telling you, for things to get better, you gotta get better. Don't ask for it to
change out there, ask for you to change here. Don't ask for a more favorable wind, we call
that naive. Don't ask for better seed, better soil. This is the only planet you've got.
Just ask that you can get wiser and stronger and better.
Be able to take care of your own responsibilities.
Get better.
For everybody out there, bottom line entrepreneurship
is get ready to lose, get ready to fail.
Enjoy the win.
Why?
Because then you appreciate it.
If you win all the time, then you
don't know what loss feels like.
But when you know what loss feels like and failure feels like,
then you work really, really, really hard when you get a W,
when you get a win, to protect it.
Anytime y'all are having this little voice, they call it the big voice.
Anytime you having this voice in your head,
turn on the camera and say that to the camera.
Oh, I don't feel like going to the
gym today I don't maybe I should just call off a work say it to the camera
now David Goggins said ash but I got one better for y'all say that shit to y'all
kids say that to your little brother say that to your wife say this to your little brother. Say that to your wife.
Say that to your girlfriend.
Say that to your grandmother who's probably about to pass away.
Just say that real quick.
You can't, can you?
Whatever you don't use, you lose.
Lack of use causes loss.
If you tie your arm to your body, leave it there long enough, you'll never use it again.
It's over for the arm.
Now, it may not be over, but it's over for the arm.
The only way to keep the use of this arm is what?
Keep using it.
If you quit, you lose automatically.
They don't bring it up for a vote.
You lose automatically when you quit.
Now the same thing that goes for your arm goes for your brain, mentality.
The same thing goes for all the human virtues.
Ambition, unused, declines.
Strong feelings, unused, diminish.
It doesn't grow, it diminishes.
Faith, unused, decreases.
It's a law.
Vitality, unused, diminishes.
Energy, unused, decreases.
You are your own worst enemy.
You waste precious time dreaming of the future instead of engaging in the present. Energy unused decreases. You are your own worst enemy.
You waste precious time dreaming of the future instead of engaging in the present.
Since nothing seems urgent to you, you're only half involved in what you do.
Even if it's not easy, even if it's hard, it's easier than not doing it and wishing
that you had done it.
Everyone's hypercritical and terrified to do anything and put themselves out
there and fail. So we hyperanalyze, hyper criticize, become paralyzed,
and end up doing nothing sitting in our basements,
watching TikToks of other people's lives, pretending that they're happy.
I was having one of those cynical days and felt like ranting a little,
but honestly there's optimism here for some low barrier of entry, personal growth,
stop analyzing, stop criticizing both yourself and others and go fail at some shit. Go give someone a good job for sucking
at something because at least they're trying. Maybe we'll even give yourself permission
to do the same. We find meaning in trying difficult things, not just in succeeding at
them. The second I got my head on my ass and I realized I realized man you can achieve a lot of
shit if you get off your ass you start moving and you start motivating yourself
but we saw clearly that without the lessons that we had learned from our
mistakes we would have surely died in the desert and when you look back on any
achievement you will find that was preceded by many difficulties and many
lessons they are the price that you pay for your success and no success is possible without
People are walking around brother and they're setting themselves up for failure
They wake up there on their phones till 12 in the bed scrolling. They don't study. They don't learn
They don't self develop people are just trying to make it win-win-win
No, just get rid of your deficits and the rest will just flourish people that win long term are the people that make it so hard
To lose that it becomes easy to win.
Imagine you just set yourself up for success.
You open up your calendar, it's set up for success.
You open up your YouTube, it's set up for success.
You open up your phone book, it's set up for success.
Your relationship, it's set up for success.
Winning was just kind of like inevitable.
So set up the systems in your life.
When you see what men can do when pushed beyond the limit of human capacity,
when you see that when
you hear about it when you read about it well then remember to push yourself push
yourself every day every moment get out there and get after it
Every moment get out there and get after it
But know what I discovered
When you're working at your dream somebody said the heart of the battle the sweet of the victory
It's good to you. Why see when you win it's hard. There's a struggle see what you become in the process is more important in the dream
That's far more important the kind of person you become the character that The kind of person you become, the character that you build,
the courage that you develop,
the faith that you're manifesting.
Oh, it's something that you get up in the morning,
you look yourself in the mirror,
you're a different kind of person.
You walk with a different kind of spirit.
And people know that you know what life is,
that you have embraced life.
You knew it was hard, but you did it hard.
If you stay in bed, if you stay on the couch, if you stay in your comfort zone, if you only
do what is easy, your life will be hard.
But if you do what is hard, if you get up, if you grind, if you are relentless if you work as hard as possible
When other people are slacking off your life will be easy
People limit themselves in a crazy way. They're like, oh, yeah, everybody can't do it It's like you said, it's like no everybody can't do it. It takes a lot
You know, I mean you gotta go through the shit to get it. Michael Jordan remember I interviewed him years ago
You gotta go through the shit to get it. Michael Jordan, remember I interviewed him years ago,
and I said, what makes you the best in the world?
Is it skill, is it talent, is it abilities,
is it background, is it training?
And he was so awesome.
He said, Tony, I can tell you the truth
and it won't sound like hyperbole or false modesty.
He said, I didn't even make the high school basketball team
my sophomore year, I was cut.
He said, what it is is every day I demand more for myself
than anybody else could possibly expect. I don't compete with other people
I compete with what I'm capable of the problem in this world you see is
instant gratification everybody wants it now if you want the future to change for
you you've got to change if you, you've got to change.
If you don't change, the next six years of your life is going to be just like the last
six.
You'll still be behind on your bills.
You'll still be behind on your promises.
If you will change, everything will change for you.
If you will get better, everything will get better for you.
If you'll change your philosophy, if you'll change your habits, if you'll refine your
thinking, if you'll change and accept some new disciplines, if you'll turn the corner
where you've been in the past, go for a new life for the future, all kinds of remarkable
things will happen for you if you will change.
Do you remember who you were before the world told you who you should be?
So anytime you gotta be courageous, let's look at it from the standpoint of dreams,
goals and aspirations.
You got your dream, your goal and your aspiration and then you got reality.
Right?
And oftentimes reality doesn't reflect the goal, the dream and the aspiration.
And so when you think courage like being courageous and following your heart because it somehow knows
what you wanna do anyway, like it's almost like instinct.
It's almost like when you feel something that you should do
and for some strange reason like your mind
or your spirit tells you, now I don't wanna do it
because it takes you outside of your comfort zone
and it puts you in a space and place that may be unknown
or puts you in a space and place that may be unknown or puts you in a space and place of uncharted territory but you know you should do it you could feel it
right and then you go against it.
That the magic you're looking for in life is in the work you're avoiding and that just
like kind of rock me.
There's something that you know you should be doing.
Whether it be working on yourself, losing weight, writing something, working on your career.
The magic you're looking for in life is in the work you're avoiding.
Everybody wants to be a star, everybody wants
success, everybody wants to have money. You got to work at it. If you really want
to be successful, you have to work at it. Nothing is achieved without some
perspiration, nothing. Anything that's worth anything,
you have to work at, one more time.
And even if you're not where you wanna be in life
and you're grinding and you're on that hustle,
keep grinding, but also appreciate it,
appreciate that hustle, appreciate this thing,
appreciate this beautiful, chaotic,
unknown existence you're in.
The thing we call life.
I love me.
So the day that you decide to stop loving me, I'm not going to love myself any less.
I believe in me.
If you stop believing in me, I'm not going to believe in myself any less.
If you believe that I'm irrelevant,
that no one is checking for me, and that I don't mean anything to the world, because
you think or believe that about me, it doesn't mean that I'm going to believe it about myself.
Refine your goals. I don't know what ambitions you've had up until now, but this weekend
would be a good time to start the process. Here's the next one believe in
yourself and you've got to believe in the possibilities you've got to believe
in the economy you've got to believe that tomorrow can be better than today
but here's the big one believe in yourself there isn't a skill you can't
learn there isn't a discipline you can't try there isn't a skill you can't learn. There isn't a discipline you can't try. There isn't a class you couldn't take.
There isn't a book you couldn't read.
Ask for wisdom.
This is communication of the highest source.
Ask for wisdom that creates answers.
Ask for the wisdom that creates faith to believe things are possible.
To live life, you need problems.
If you get everything you want the minute you want it, what's the point of living? to believe things are possible. To live life, you need problems.
If you get everything you want the minute you want it,
what's the point of living?
Hey man, look, I don't know if you realize this,
but the life that you want to live,
not just gonna fall on your left.
I mean, something's gonna start clicking in your head
that doing the bare minimum
not gonna take you to the heights that you wanna reach.
I mean, you got a potential in the world,
but it don't mean nothing if you don't maximize it.
So I need you to lock in and become who you're supposed to be.
Sure thing.
It says, try not to resist the changes that come your way.
Instead, let life live through you.
And do not worry that your life is turning upside down
or not going the way that you want it to.
How do you know that the side you are used to
is better than the one that's to come.
I don't negotiate with myself. I tell my brain, I don't go, oh, wait, I'm not ready.
Or let me count to 10, or maybe I'll do it tomorrow.
That pattern of thinking is what destroys
most people's lives and their dreams.
You can settle for a life like most people have,
or you can create your dreams,
but to do it, you need to be able to push yourself.
So you need to train yourself in little ways.
Or it could be just going and lifting weights,
and you're gonna do like 10 minutes of pushing yourself,
or a sprint, or a really fast walk, anything.
Because when you get your blood pushing,
when you push beyond what's comfortable,
it develops this determination inside you,
this sense of will that you will then use everywhere else.
I always say, if you discipline yourself
in one area of your life, you're going to be
able to do even more in other areas.
I was wondering what your thoughts are on how to know that you're doing enough.
So first thing, you have the self-awareness.
Like you see the thing for what it is.
You're not in the matrix, right?
You're seeing the code.
I just tried to outrun and outwork that sensation.
If I just go faster and harder and work longer hours,
chastise myself more, maybe eventually I'll get to the
stage where things go well.
Maybe that will fill the internal voice.
It is far easier to achieve our material desires
than to renounce them.
And you have this desire, which sounds like an inner fire
that you want to make a dent in the world.
You want to do something.
Stop fighting it.
Stop fighting the fact that you want to try and work harder.
Should you aim to try and discover self-love as early as possible?
Probably a good idea.
Spend your 20s seeing how hard you can work.
Because if push comes to shove and a catastrophe occurs in your business or your personal life or something, at 42,
you want to be able to turn around and go,
for half a decade I've ended worlds with how hard I worked and how resilient I became and stuff like that. The way that I look back on what I did
was sure it was difficult at the time and could I have had more fun and all
the rest of it with the self-love thing of maybe being able to get there sooner
perhaps I had to earn my stripes and if you're built the way that it sounds like
you're built which is not too dissimilar to the way that I'm built and maybe a
lot of the people in this room as well, you just need to put the work in. The life we live guys, is a differential of margins that's almost unmeasurable.
What is successful and what is failure, the differential are so small.
We're talking about seconds, we're talking about reps, we're talking about the finest Establishment of measurement that will make or break someone's life
To be successful at that moment
And once at that moment successful
That gives a birth of a lifestyle that's unbeatable second to none
But in order to have that first success
You must ensure yourself
That you're giving it all you can today
Because the future we don't know do we?
We're training for that that you're giving it all you can today because the future we don't know, do we?
We're training for that.
And when I hear people say terms like good enough
publish me
to an nth degree
because they are saying something
that is justified at the moment
but not quantitative until a future endeavor of life.
So therefore they are passing
judgment on now for a future event that they know nothing about.
A confident person was not born confident. A confident person is built brick by brick
by brick and all of those bricks are just different results that they got in their lives.
So your brain needs pressure. It needs constant pressure and
stress and pressure is not a bad thing. We have this thing where we feel like
stress is bad. It's bad for you. Bad. You know you need to relax. You need to
chill. Stress will kill you. No. Being bored will kill you. Not having anything
to do will kill you. It's much more dangerous than stress. Yes,
you can work too hard. You can work where there's no soul involved. I work like a fiend
because I'm writing a book and it's a very hard process for me. And I'm working far too
much but man I love it. Good enough if you think about it. Good is a positive, enough
is a negative. That's an oxymoron right there
It's hypocritical on its own sense. There's nothing ever good enough
The only thing that's enough is at the end of the day the end power the final hour
Whatever you're going for that your hand is raised victoriously
That's when you know it's enough and you're in the gym right now to ensure that daddy Ben goes your way
It will never goes your way.
It will never go your way, guys, if you're saying today is good enough.
If you never say good enough today, I promise you tomorrow will always be enough.
Whenever good enough isn't enough, you can bet tomorrow you'll have enough.
Each person's income is determined primarily by their philosophy, not by the economy.
Once I understood that, then I said, well, I don't have to go to work on the economy.
And the answer was no.
You only have to go to work on yourself to make yourself more valuable because it doesn't take but a few ideas to make a great difference in your income
personal life social life and all the rest
The margins guys in life that dictates a champion so much remember not to God
The legacies of like the role models the one that stands those time I always talk about, don't know terms like good enough. It's too
hard. And they've failed over and over and over again so many times that they've learned
what it takes to succeed. With failure comes success and with success comes blueprints.
The fundamental principles that lead to success.
It just takes work. Shitloads and shitloads of work.
Every time I try and dress it up or cut a corner, I get brutally reminded the work just needs doing.
The work doesn't care who you are. It just cares that it gets done
I'm actually gonna reverse quote David Goggins on this one. I
Love this quote that he has which he says there's no shortcuts for you David
I heard him say that and I just love that as a refrain which is that a lot of people look for a shortcut
But the idea that you say like they're not for you. You don't get to use them. You are immune to shortcuts.
I just love it because then it just further shortcuts the path to the work that needs to get done.
You should push yourself beyond your limits of tolerance to find out where it is.
How much can you work? How disciplined can you become? Like can you work 12 hours a day?
Can you work eight hours a day? Can you work three hours a day? Like flat out.
Where's your limit? And how much how much work can you do 12 hours a day? Can you work 8 hours a day? Can you work 3 hours a day? Like, flat out. Where's your limit?
And how much work can you do and how much socialization?
You should find out.
Push yourself past and then back off to that point where it's optimally sustainable.
You have the opportunity to prevent catastrophe in your own life,
but in order to do that, once again, you have to stand up.
You have to do the right thing.
You have to be uncomfortable.
You have to impose the discipline on your own life.
Stop listening to the normality of life.
And everyone's saying the way it is, is the way it's going to be for you.
The way it is for you is blood, sweat, and tears today to create a foundation the strength of tomorrow. Those days combined into whatever dream
you want to be a reality. We are always fighting for that edge, always fighting
for that opportunity so it's not past, it's not missed, but lived.
We're not gonna cry about those opportunities.
We're gonna smile, remember that,
and think it's all they came,
because we were ready.
You know what they think, Dave?
You won't be ready if today isn't pushed
with the strenuous nature and the pressure
of the moment in the future that everything rides on.
There's several days I don't want to do I procrastinate like a mother.
This one was days man. I don't know what challenges you might have and going over the stuff we've
been going over in terms of amending your philosophy or going back and you know redoing some stuff that
you might have messed up.
Face all your fears. That's how you conquer them.
Don't dismiss them. Just face them.
Here's what I'm afraid of. I wonder what I could do to change that.
Here's the next one. Exercise your willpower to change direction.
You don't have to keep doing what you've done the last six years
if it's not yielding you the benefits you want.
My mentor helped me to review the last six years, so I wouldn't repeat those errors the next six. See if
you're a goose you have no choice to do the next six like you did the last six.
But if you're not a goose, here's what you can do. Pick a new destination and
start going that way. You say well I've done this for the last two years I'll
probably have to do it another two. The answer is no, not in a million years. Now
you can change one little degree at a time or if you want to you can revolutionize the whole thing
Look, I'm sorry your life turned out so bad, but don't blame me you messed it up yourself
you just focus on the bad stuff when all you had to do is
Let go of the past and keep moving forward
I you look at YouTube and I see guys have Mike Tyson immortal, Mike Tyson God, and I'm not worthy of that.
You are Mike.
Not for somebody to praise me or anything, no. I'm always just Mike.
Can I say something?
You can say anything. I'd love for you to talk to me, brother.
You had to go through all of that so that you could change the world, dude. Well, yeah, I don't see that at all, mom.
You don't realize how many lives you're changing, saving because of who you are and what you've been through and how you're willing to speak about it now
That was the beginning of this thing or I caught that red light and therefore made me
60 seconds later to get to that cafe where I met
That movie producer or that woman who
became my wife or whatever that is.
It doesn't make sense at the time but boy looking back it's all a science.
Is that quote about the ironic tragedy is that life has to be lived forward but only
makes sense in reverse?
Yeah.
You know what happens?
Most of you guys won't do the damn work. You know why?
You're not disciplined. You're distracted. In this room, we will recreate you tomorrow.
I will tell you this. It's not a one-day deal. It's the rest of your life deal. You
make the decision to level up every single day for the rest of your life. Do
you hear me? How many of you are prepared to die for what you want?
How many of you are really prepared to go all in? Not care about getting embarrassed?
Don't care what anyone else thinks about you. Other people are running your life. It's time
for you to take back control of your life. How to go from average to fortune. There's five
simple steps. You might like to make a note of them. Here's the first one.
Get serious.
You don't have to be grim,
but you must be serious.
I know a guy that's got a half a dozen jokes
keeping him from becoming wealthy.
He's not known as rich.
He's known as a joker.
Which I guess is okay if that's the kind of life you want to live.
But it really isn't the best way to live.
To go from average to...
