Know that if you have big goals and big dreams
Along the way failure is going to happen
Almost every successful person that I have ever encountered has gone through not a month or a year
but many years of doing
Work without reward for me. There was no passion no drive no nothing, but I had this fire
That I'm going gonna be somebody.
And they have to sacrifice things
that everyone finds interesting
that most people want to do
during that entire season of their life.
And they basically sacrifice a season
of other things that they would prefer to do
to do stuff that they would not prefer to do
because of the one thing they want most.
Because on all those bad days,
on all those days you don't want to do sh**,
you have to be your own motivator, your own coach, your own trainer, your own everything.
My three questions are, what do you want?
How badly do you want it?
And how much are you willing to suffer?
Something in you has to wake up.
And usually the only person that can wake it up is you.
Nobody else at the moment has the power to change you
unless you have that initial spark and say,
I must do something.
I don't want this anymore.
What do you want?
Because a lot of people are unclear
what they want from life.
The discipline is the most difficult thing, not only in the sports, but in life.
Do you actually want to do this or not?
Because if you actually want to do it, what's going to stop you?
Nothing.
And if you don't really want to do it, what's going to stop you?
Just about anything that comes up, just about any obstacle that gets in your way becomes an excuse.
It becomes a reason, it becomes a rationale for not proceeding down that path.
The best way to fight the demons that chase you in the night is to stop and turn around.
Turn around.
Face them.
Man up.
What one great thing would you dare to dream if you knew you could not
fail? If you knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that you could not fail, what one
thing would you set as a goal for yourself? Because sometimes answering
that question will tell you the one thing that you've been put on this earth
to accomplish. The biggest mistake a person can do right now,
no matter in which situation you are, is to give up.
You might not reach the best, best version of yourself
in this lifetime, but a better one than you are right now.
And when you get to the point where all you want to do is be successful as bad as you want to breathe, right now. success as much as you want to sleep. Some of you have been average for so damn long you don't know what it is to do hard work but there's a lot of you out there who want
to be much more than average but just don't know how to do it every single day to grind.
You need to find someone to oil those gears up but there's a motherfucker out there who
wants what you have, who wants the position you are, who wants the job you have, who wants the wife that you have, or the husband.
There's someone out there hungry and wants everything you have.
Don't be afraid to fail big, to dream big. But dreams without goals are just dreams.
And they ultimately fuel disappointment.
When you get your mind and body in sync with each other,
you're unstoppable.
You have a confidence that can tear down all the walls
and all the fears of your life.
You see this guy here staring back at you. Yeah, that's your toughest opponent
Every time you get into the ring, that's who you're going against. I believe that in boxing and I do believe that in life
Make a list of everything you want now and then plan on spending the next 25 years of your life getting it slowly piece by piece
You got a choice You got talent five years of your life getting it slowly piece by piece.
You got a choice.
You got talent.
You got a chance and I won't hear about your environment
and what your momma didn't give you and the white man won't
give you no shot. You got a chance.
Use it while you're still alive.
Everybody's got a dream.
Everybody's got a goal. What's the plan?
Your plan has got to be clear, concise, compelling, consistent, and
committed. You've got to have a plan. And when you're trying to do something that
you're truly passionate about, there is no plan B. You think when you're young
that you have all this time, you have no time. There's no time. I mean
one of the quotes on the wall in the gym in there's there is no tomorrow. Never say
you can't do it say I haven't done it yet. I haven't done it yet and that's
true with everything it's like there's nothing that you can't do you may not
have done it yet. We don't know if you can do it or not until you really
practice and then you find out if you can do it or not or how well you can do
it. Athletes who turn up to compete, they put a bit more effort in, they try.
They try to be the best amongst their group.
Then there's the athletes who train to win.
They train every day, every session, so they win on match night.
And then there are just those very few players who train to dominate.
They train so hard that winning is inevitable.
Quitting guarantees the failure.
Once you quit, it rules out any chance of succeeding.
You better make sure in the next season of your life that the person who walked away from you
Know what they're missing
You better do something with your life
Did you look at me you better do something so strong and so big with your life
That they have to sit on the couch and say that's the one that got by man if the lion is the king of the jungle
How can he be the king of the jungle? If he's not the biggest he can't be the fastest
because that's a cheetah. He can't be the smartest so he's not the biggest the
fastest or the smartest. So how does the lion become the king of the jungle? His
mentality. That's the only difference of a lion and an elephant.
I don't have motivation a lot of time.
It's actually more about discipline.
It's about just getting it done.
Get up and get it done.
Like with anything, with work, with working out, with creating a product, with building
a brand, with relationships, whatever.
It's discipline over motivation.
Motivation's a small thing that can last two minutes or an hour. Motivation can come from listening to a song on your iPod.
If you've got discipline, you're willing to do it every single day of your life
and knowing that it's going to take so long to do it, you just get up and do it.
You don't even think about motivation. I say chase your dreams, man. Do that thing, man,
that keeps you up at night.
That thing that bothers you man that makes you trip.
You can't quit thinking about it.
You always, that thing man that you wake up in the middle of the night you got a new idea.
That's what you got to chase.
Because anything else is going to disappoint you.
You're going to forever be sad man.
If you don't chase that dream,
you're gonna forever be miserable, man.
The feeling I feel right now is as bad as it feels.
It's a hell of a lot better feeling
than a life where you throw the towel.
That's something you never recover from.
Tomorrow morning, I'll wake up stronger.
I'll feel alive, and I'll have the belief
and confidence backing me up.
After a good night's rest. I can only get better.
My towel's down. And life...
There is no... There's no more rounds, man. You threw it in.
I feel like right now I can put the towel back up.
I'm gonna be stronger tomorrow than next round.
I mean, I liked her.
It's like you embarrass yourself if you say something.
And you embarrass yourself if you say something, and you embarrass yourself if you don't.
You know,
sometimes all you need is 20 seconds of insane courage.
Just literally 20 seconds of just embarrassing bravery.
And I promise you,
something great will come of it.
Honey, I'm seven non-Fox years old now, my father died at seven and a half.
I don't want to live in a hole anymore. And I'm going to do something about it.
The greatest of all qualities to guarantee success is the absolute willingness to go at anything and refuse to stop until you achieve it.
And you know something? The statistics show that 95% of the goals that you set for yourself
you will achieve if you refuse to quit.
You're born with a gift.
If not that, then you get good at something along the way.
And what you're good at, you don't take for granted.
You don't betray it.
What if you do betray your gift?
And you betray yourself.
It's a sad thing.
Let me be very clear.
I'll never give up.
Never.
Louis. Never. Louis, a moment of pain is worth a lifetime of glory. You remember that?
I can't do this, Pete. I'm not like you. I'm nothing. Just let me be nothing.
What are you talking about?
I can't make a track team. I don't even know why you...
Yes, you can. If you can take it, you can make it.
What?
If you can take it, you can make it.
All right, you train, you fight way harder than those other guys,
and you win. You get out from under.
Why do you think it says take the opportunity? It doesn't say receive the opportunity. It doesn't say
have the opportunity granted to you. It doesn't say get lucky with the
opportunity. It says take the opportunity. That means you have to seize it. That
means you have to take it. Don't half-ass it. Don't half-ass it. Well that never goes out of style does it?
I mean think about it. If you're gonna do something, if you've chosen to do something,
whatever it is, easy hard. If you give it your all and you don't half-ass it,
win, lose, draw, get what you want, don't get what you want, whatever the outcome is,
if you don't half-ass it, least you're not going to have to wonder, ooh, would the outcome
been different? What if I did give it my all? And boy, wondering that is what keeps us up
at night.
Try to find a thing that you really enjoy. Try to find a thing that you're passionate
about.
Like an activity.
Yes. For me, early on, it was drawing. Find something. Find a thing that you're passionate about. Like an activity. Yes. For me, early on, it was drawing. Find something.
Find a thing that you genuinely enjoy,
because getting good at things you genuinely enjoy
is extremely beneficial for young people.
Losers let it happen.
Winners make it happen.
Losers see thunderstorms.
Winners see rainbows.
Losers see icy streets.
Winners put on their ice
skates, losers take chances, winners make choices. It's all in the way you choose to
think. And Earl Nightingale and the scriptures and people through the years have said it
best. You do become what you think about most of the time.
When I said I wanted to win eight gold medals, basically half the people in the swimming
world thought I was absolutely crazy
and nobody could ever do something like that.
But for me, I was somebody who believed in it
and somebody who believed in the process of getting there.
I knew it wasn't gonna happen overnight,
like I said before,
but every little small thing that we did
was a small stepping stone in order to,
in order to even be able to have that chance
and that opportunity to do what I did in 2008.
And look, I'll be the first one to tell you,
there were a lot of days where I did not want
to get out of bed.
And I guarantee you, if I ask the question here,
if everybody is excited to get out of bed every single day,
if I saw a hand, I'm gonna blatantly call you a liar.
Because we all know that is far from the truth.
But, if you have those little small goals,
those little small things that get you excited
when you don't want to, it's gonna make it even better
and even easier at the end when you're getting ready
for a presentation or the end of the year or this or that,
whatever event you're leading up to.
It's gonna make it so much easier.
And I think if you look at the greats in anything,
in any walk of life,
the greats do things when they don't always want to.
And that's the separation.
Success is something you attract, not something you pursue.
Success is looking for a good place to stay.
So instead of going after it, you work on yourself. Personal development.
The whole world is in chess. Any move can be the
death of you. Do anything except remain where you started and you can't be sure of your
end. Be pure. I think a lot of times when we're born into this world we actually wind
up going backwards. And it seems like the more we mature, the more responsible our
dreams become. And the more governors we put on ourselves and our ability to dream and
to reimagine. And it's always a fight for us parents and for you guys to make sure that
your dreams always stay pure. So it's not a matter of pushing beyond the limitations or expectations.
It's really a matter of protecting your dreams, protecting your imagination.
That's really the key.
And when you do that, then the world just seems limitless.
I'm a huge Biggie Smalls fan, and he wrote a song called The Sky Is The Limit.
And as a kid growing up, I believed that.
I believed that whatever I put my mind to,
and if I was willing to make sacrifices,
and I was dedicated, that I could achieve absolutely anything.
And you still do?
I still do.
It only takes one second for you to lose the whole thing.
So the one second decision is just that.
You're in a situation where life is sucking.
Let's say you're in extreme cold water
and your life is flashing before your eyes.
Every time that wave goes over your head,
your thought process is,
I gotta get the fuck out of this water.
And you're in hell week.
And you're hour one of 130 hours thirty hours you lay back and that first
wave hits you your mind goes straight from our to all the way to our 130 you
can't process five days this you're now and you're you're now in a you like I
gotta get out of here you You're in fight or flight.
It's cold, I can't be cold this long.
And then this is where that one second decision comes in.
You forgot every reason why you wanted to be there.
You don't care about seals, you don't care about any of this,
you don't care about fighting for your country.
All you wanna do is go back home.
You want the warmth, you may want something to eat, you
want your girl to hold you, all those things of comfort are there in that one
second. And this is where people lose. But what you have to do in that one
second is hard to process information during pain because that pain takes over
and you can't think rationally.
You're thinking about fight or flight, save yourself.
That's not a rational thought.
It's not a thought that's going to get you through hard times.
Most people fail that one second.
So what happens, what I do in that one second,
and there's a bigger process to all this,
but in that one second, I physically stayed in that one second. And there's a bigger process to all this, but in that one second,
I physically stayed in that water.
Because if I get out of the water, I quit.
So I physically stay in the water,
but mentally, I'm on the beach with the instructors.
As soon as you look back in your history
and you come up with something
that you feel like you want to change,
something else has to change.
Belief doesn't just happen because you hang something up on a wall.
Only problem is we all got so much junk floating through us,
a lot of times we end up getting in our own way.
How much more do you want from me?
More.
How much more successful do you want me to be?
More successful.
How many records can my records break?
More records. But, but I my records break? More records.
But, but I'm the best.
You're a man. You are a man.
Stand up and be a man.
Make the hard decisions.
Make the sacrifices.
Make the unpopular decisions.
And become comfortable in your own skin.
Let me teach you the real life.
How it really is. The reason why you're a loser. The reason teach you the real life, how it really is.
The reason why you're a loser,
the reason why you're not fucking making it,
and the reason why you're trying to go to all these,
I go to all these fucking conventions,
speak all the fucking time.
I look in the fucking audience,
these people sign up, sign up, sign up,
fucking every year to go to convention,
thinking they're gonna learn something fucking different.
No, you're lazy, you know exactly what to do exactly what to do because even me in
my state of I can't read and write I knew exactly what to do it just sucks
doing it it sucks to do it you're always afraid to take the first step because
all you see is every negative thing ten miles down the road.
As times get hard for me, the truth comes out.
And my truth is powerful as fuck.
It's real.
It's tangible.
I feel it.
It comes out of my brain as I speak about it.
I'm reliving every single dark moment of my life to be here.
So that is what people don't get. That is what motivates David Goggins is the unseen
work but everybody needs that pat on the back.
Like the amount of times when I was on my lonely path where I was too different from
the friends that I had,
but not successful enough to be friends
with the people that I wanted to be friends with.
That's when you want people to root for you.
That's when you want people to support you.
Once you've already won, people are like,
he's amazing, he's so good.
But like, that's the time when you need it the least.
And so, you always have to be the person who roots
for you before everyone else does.
Look around you. There is no team. It was you. There was no weight loss program or mom
and dad waking you up saying you can do it. You can be better trying to build belief.
You built belief and you had nothing. Rock bottom. Because if you're going to do anything big, you have to believe that it can happen.
Otherwise it never will.
The cynics get to be right, the optimists get to be rich.
I've been wrong more times than I've been right. I've failed more times than I've succeeded.
Surround yourself with people whose eyes light up when they see you coming.
people whose eyes light up when they see you coming.
Two, slowly is the fastest way to get to where you want to be.
And three, the top of one mountain is the bottom of the next.
So keep climbing.
It's 1 a.m. I'm going for my third workout.
Do I wanna go to the gym?
Absolutely not.
I'd rather, you know, lay in my house
and sit in the movie theater and watch movies.
But, you know, to be the best you got to work overtime.
To be the best you got to work overtime.
Buddy of mine calls me the other day and says, uh, he's having trouble running past
eight miles.
This is a guy who can run 30 miles any time of the day.
So I tell him to come out to my house and we'll get some runs in.
So he comes out, he goes, man, I can tell you I can't run past eight miles.
But I realized in his life, he's had a new kid, more responsibilities at work, all this
stuff.
He's not thinking about this. I am so I take him out for a run
We get 30 minutes into it. How far we going Goggins? I tell them get an hour into it
I tell them hour and a half into it didn't tell him so soon he shuts up
We run three hours the guy does fine next David go out there. He's able to run 20 miles again
three hours the guy does fine next day to go out there he's able to run 20 miles again so this is what happened to him his circuit breaker blew our minds
are very similar circuit breakers when they blow you gotta figure out what it
is sometimes you just add it too much to your plate go back in your mind and
figure it out life guys it's a plan of action if you don't have the plan I
guarantee you someone's gonna use you
as part of their plan.
Stop going about the day as a servant.
Become the master on your day and stop having it run you.
If you want something bad enough,
you can't let anybody tell you you can't do something,
not even yourself.
I had to figure out I wasn't gonna be a punk kid
all my life.
So the only way I could turn around was to suffer.
I had to build calluses in my brain
the same way I built calluses on my hands.
Every man has two lives,
and the second starts when he realizes he has just one.
The most powerful thing we have is our brain, is our mind,
and we don't use it anymore.
What would your life be like if you made use
of all the potential that you were offered?
Say, okay, well, I'll just try that for a year.
I'm gonna do the best I can at everything
that offers itself to me.
And then I'm gonna see, well, is my life better
or is my life worse?
It's like, you try it for a year, you think,
huh, it's actually better.
My friendships are better, my family's better.
I'm less anxious, I'm more positively oriented. I'm less resentful and bitter and jealous and angry. You know,
I'm more physically healthy. It's like, what happens if you did that for five years?
What you will realize is that you have greatness within you. What you'll realize is that you're
more powerful than you can ever begin to imagine. What you will realize is that
you are greater than your circumstances, that you don't have to go through life being a
victim.
Now, as in the military, we call these instructor-led runs. Most of the time, we knew the starting
end point. So on the way back, I started seeing people getting happy because the end was near.
But there were some soul instructors that would hear the happiness and go right on past the end point.
When that happened, everybody stopped talking, heads were stopped dropping, and I started taking souls.
At that time I knew what happened in their minds. They were living off the hope factor.
They hoped the instructors would stop running.
They hoped the water was never cold.
They hoped the weather was f**king good.
I don't live off that hope f**king.
I wish the water was cold.
I wish the f**king instructors keep on f**king running.
I wish the f**king rain.
When the end is unknown, and the distance is unknown,
that's when you know who the you are.
I was 21 years old.
I was living in a little apartment.
I was working on a construction job.
It was 35 degrees below zero outside.
I didn't have a car.
I didn't have any money in the bank.
My clothes were old.
I had failed out of high school.
And I looked around me in that cold winter
in that little apartment with no future
and not much of a past, and I said to myself,
if everyone I want anything to change, it's up to me.
That's the time where I really got scared.
It suddenly hit me right between the eyes
that if I wanted my life to be different,
it was up to me to make my life different.
If you want a thing bad enough to go out and fight for it, to work day and night for it,
to give up your time, your peace, and your sleep for it, if all that you dream and scheme
is about it, and life seems useless and worthless without it, and if you gladly sweat for it
and fret for it and plan for it and lose all your terror of the opposition for it.
You besiege and beset it with the help of God you'll get it.
Everybody's got a dream, everybody's got a goal. What's the plan?
You gotta have a plan and when you're trying to do something that you're truly passionate about
there is no plan B. The starting point of taking complete charge of your life,
the starting point of great success and great achievement is to accept complete unconditional responsibility.
If it's the me, it's up to me. If it's the me, it's up to you.
I want to tell you something, that if you're not a little bit afraid, at least three or four nights a week, you're not trying hard enough.
Most people, the bottom 80% are lazy, and they're looking for an easy way.
They're looking for a shortcut to be successful,
and there are not, there aren't any.
My father could have been a great comedian,
but he didn't believe that that was possible for him.
And so he made a conservative choice.
Instead, he got a safe job as an accountant,
and when I was 12 years old,
he was let go from that safe job,
and our family had to
do whatever we could to survive.
I learned many great lessons from my father, not the least of which was that you can fail
at what you don't want.
So you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.
We have this governor on our brain, and how you start pushing past that governor, start
realizing your
brain has the tactical advantage over you why because it knows your
insecurities it knows when you're lying it knows your fears knows everything
about you now fear is going to be a player in your life you get to decide
how much you can spend your whole life imagining ghosts worrying about the
pathway to the future,
but all there will ever be is what's happening here and the decisions we make in this moment
which are based in either love or fear.
So many of us choose our path out of fear disguised as practicality.
What we really want seems impossibly out of reach and ridiculous to expect, so we never
dare to ask the universe for it.
I'm saying, I'm the proof that you can ask the universe for it.
If you have to ask how to get motivated to go to the gym, you don't need to be going
to the gym.
You don't want it enough.
When you're sick and tired of looking and feeling like you'll show up, I'll see you there
because you're going to look in the mirror and you're going to
be like that. You kind of want to be in the gym and if you're
going to make this a lifestyle, you have to lower the barriers,
make the gym cheaper, closer training partners, exercises
you like and you have to raise the impetus, goals, inspiration, and a fucking
goddamn real desire to be there.
The people that have no problem showing up to the gym are the people that want to be
there, and no amount of Rocky Balboa movies are going to get you to that place.
A lot of that is also built with the experience of having the gym be a place where you get
results by pushing yourself, winning little mini challenges and having fun with it.
Everybody thinks they're a loser.
Every young person thinks they're a loser.
At least a young person in the situation I was at.
I didn't know I wasn't a loser until I started winning.
Develop the qualities of courage and persistence.
I said before the biggest single obstacle to success is the fear of failure.
The antidote to the fear of failure is the habit of courage.
And what we know is that you need two types of courage to succeed.
The first type of courage is the courage to begin.
It's the courage to launch with no guarantees of success.
Someone once said that if all obstacles must first be removed, nothing will ever get done.
Cannot let a fear of failure, or a fear of comparison,
or a fear of judgment stop you
from doing what's going to make you great.
You cannot succeed without this risk of failure.
You cannot have a voice without the risk of criticism.
And you cannot love without the risk of loss.
You must go out and you must take these risks.
Everything I'm truly proud of in this life
has been a terrifying prospect to me.
None of it comes easy.
And people will tell you to do what makes you happy.
But a lot of this has been hard work.
And I'm not always happy.
And I don't think you should do just what makes you happy.
I think you should do what makes you great.
Do what's uncomfortable and scary and hard but pays off in the long run.
You can't be comfortable with yourself if you don't know who yourself is.
And you can't know who yourself is if you don't stop looking at how everybody around you is,
and start looking at what makes you comfortable
and what makes you uniquely you.
There's roughly close to, I guess,
about eight billion people on this planet,
but there's only one you.
Would you stand out in the crowd?
Everybody just wants to be comfortable.
Everybody wants to sit in the car,
I don't wanna go outside, it's cool, I don't wanna go outside, it's cold.
I don't wanna do this, it's hot.
Like you've gotta do things that you don't wanna do
because you show your body that your mind is the boss.
The pain of discipline or the pain of regret.
Go for the discipline because it weighs ounces.
The regret weighs tons.
If you do what is easy, your life will be hard.
Complain, pour in at your circumstances, give up your power, blame the government, blame the economy.
If you do what is easy, your life will be hard.
But if you do what is hard, your life will be easy.
It's hard to make a radical change in your behavior.
It's hard to take ownership.
It's hard to swallow the bitter pill that wherever you find yourself,
at some point in time you made an appointment to be there.
As hard.
As hard.
If you do what is easy, your life will be hard.
If you do what is hard, your life will be easy.
You know what I'm sick and tired of, Harry?
I'm sick and tired of having to eke my way through life. I'm sick and tired of Harry. I'm sick and tired of having to eke my way through life.
I'm sick and tired of being a nobody.
The heaviest things in life aren't iron and gold,
but unmade decisions.
The reason you are stressed is that you have decisions to make
and you're not making them.
Be consistent in your relationships.
Be consistent in your work.
Make it so that you are the type of person
that everybody can depend upon.
That people will believe in and they'll depend upon
and they know that if you say something,
that you'll do it.
That if you say you will be somewhere
or if you undertake a responsibility,
that you will fulfill that responsibility.
That sort of consistency, that sort of dependability
is one of the most valuable things in the world of work today.
If I see something, I see opportunity, I'm gonna go for it.
You know what I'm saying?
We only, you know, we're all gonna die one day.
Yeah, that's true.
So we live like that.
Live like you could die tomorrow.
I always felt like I could do anything.
That's the main thing people are controlled by.
Thoughts, their perception of themselves.
They're slowed down by their perception of themselves.
If you're taught
you can't do anything, you won't do anything. I was taught I could do everything. Your brain
is the most powerful weapon in the world. Once you put away your phones and your computers and all
that we have nowadays, that's great. We're up to date. But your brain is the only thing you have
when you're going through depression, when you're going through you have when you're going through depression,
when you're going through hard times,
you're going through death, real life.
You can't Google that, man.
See if you can find some ways to multiply your value
to the marketplace.
And he said your income will immediately start to change.
Up until then, I was hoping that the economy would change.
I was hoping that my company would change.
I was hoping that my paycheck would change.
I was hoping that circumstances outside would change.
And then here's what I found out.
It isn't going to change.
So then my question was, if it isn't going to change, how will will my life ever change and here's what my teacher taught me
when you change
When you change everything will change for you, we're all writing a book
What's your book look like?
What is your book look like like your life is a. You got a bunch of chapters in your book,
but when they closed that book,
how good was the book?
How good was your book?
What was the ending to your book?
The ending to my book can be so amazing
because of all that was done.
All of the things that can be associated with you
and your existence become a part of the chapters in your book.
Monday, get better.
Tuesday, get better.
Wednesday, get better, right?
And you do that over a period of time.
Not like one month or two months.
I mean, it's three, four, five, six, seven, eight, not 10 years.
And then you can get to where you want to go.
This year, you're going to get better at the end. This year, you're gonna get better at the end.
Next year, you're gonna do this,
and so forth and so on,
and then patiently I was able to catch up with you.
Life is not easy, it is not.
Don't try to make it that way.
Life's not fair, it never was, it isn't now,
and it won't ever be.
Do not fall into the trap, the entitlement trap,
of feeling like you're a victim.
You are not.
Get over it and get on with it.
And yes, most things are more rewarding
when you break a sweat to get them.
You are one decision, one relationship,
one thought, one emotion, one meaning away
from a completely different life.
And unless you believe, first off, I'm right about that.
It's true.
But unless you believe that, and then you program your reticular activating system
in your brain to find those things I don't care what you're gonna do but go
out there make something of yourself for God's sake be an honest person and work
and get to the top of whatever it is that you want to get to the top up and
that you stand up for yourself like a respectable human being and be a bit of
a light on the world instead of a blight
You know and you can tell young people that and they haven't been told that by anyone now
And so the young men are so hungry for that that it's it's painful to watch
They're so relieved when someone finally comes up says hey, you know
You get your act together a bit discipline yourself
See if you can learn to tell the truth, concentrate on something for a year or two, you can be a bloody world-beater.
I'm trying to build people up.
I'm trying to armor their mind.
I'm trying to get them to believe because this world we live in is tough.
It will beat you down.
The world and the life that we live in is the ultimate competitor.
You know, if every time someone asks you a question, you try to say the right answer,
your entire life is a test.
And when did you have the most anxiety
in grammar school and high school?
No question.
On test day.
So your entire life become this test.
I ain't trying to say the right answer.
I am just doing what I feel.
My mama said trying is failing.
There is no ifs, woulds, coulds, shoulds. It just is and we just are.
I don't know nobody that's not trying to be happy or successful. If you're not
trying to be those two things something's seriously wrong. Why would you not go for it?
At one point in time you got to take a chance on you.
Life is suffering.
What do you do about that?
You voluntarily accept it and then strive to overcome the
suffering that's a consequence of that.
And the other thing that's so interesting about being alive
is that you're all in.
No matter what you do, you're all in. This is going to kill you. So I think you might as
well play the most magnificent game you can while you're waiting. Because do you have
anything better to do? Really? Why not pick the best thing possible that you could do?
Some of y'all don't want it.
That's why you ain't got it.
The excuses sound best to the person that's making them up.
Because you grew up in a household with dysfunction, drama, mental, spiritual, physical, and emotional abuse.
Doesn't mean that that's the outcome of what your life, your career is destined to be.
Excuses sound best to the person that's making them up. There's pretty much nothing
to the person that's making them up. There's pretty much nothing that you could say
that you went through that I haven't went through,
and I'm still here.
Some of y'all may connect success to me being famous.
There are people that are way more successful
than me financially, success-wise, career-wise,
and they're not famous at all excuses sound best to the person that's making them up stop feeling sorry
for yourself get off the pity potty wake your sup awaken the beast inside get in
shape get off the pity potty.
It's time to take to another level.
It's game on.
It's go season.
Right now in life,
your family's looking for that one guy right now.
They're looking for that one guy who's strong,
who's that pillar for the family in hard times.
Make sure they look around.
They look around and find you.
This is the time right now for you to step up.
Be that guy that can take anything.
Some people never will have much.
They're too cautious.
Now you can also be too reckless,
but you can also be too cautious.
This is called the timid approach to life.
And my caution was always the risk.
Risk used to drive me right up the wall.
I used to say, what if this happens?
It's called the language of the poor.
What if this happens?
And on top of that, if this was to happen, look at the fix I'd be in.
I better not try.
I could always ace myself out.
Then I'll tell you what changed my whole life when I finally discovered it's all risky.
The minute you were born, it got risky.
If you think trying is risky,
wait till they hand you the bill for not trying.
The path of the exceptional person is one of an exception,
which means that you are not with other people.
And rather than fighting that or bemoaning it,
see it as an indicator that you're on the right path.
Because if everyone else were cheering you on,
then it means you're not in the right place,
because it means you're just like everyone else,
and that's not where you want to be.
What would have had to have happened in a week
for you to look back on that week with pride?
Okay, maybe stop breaking promises to yourself. When you say, I'm going to
wake up tomorrow at 7am and when the option comes to hit the snooze button, don't do it.
There's one win that you've got for the day. That's action.
Champions just interpret anxiety as excitement. And if you're excited to go up, then you're like,
I'm amped versus I'm stressed.
But it feels the same the way you frame it totally changes how you feel when you're stepping on stage.
If you are feeling lots of anxiety it means you need to practice more.
We don't rise to the standards we have when others are watching. We fall to the standards we have
when no one is watching. The only work that really matters is the work that no one sees.
It shows you who you really are rather than who you say you are.
The fear is never reaching your potential.
That's it.
That always falling short, always quitting before you're done, always procrastinating,
always not doing the right thing.
And then one day you're an old man and you look back and go, God, I could have been great.
It could have been great.
I never forget one time I was running by a graveyard.
And I was just trying to become, I was fat.
And I ran by a graveyard.
And I looked out there, I'm like, man, I'm
wondering how many of you motherfuckers in there
can just are so upset with how you lived your life.
And just regret how you lived it.
And I'm running a 300 pound man thinking man, don't die like this bro.
What makes it hard to get better?
Let's say you're an alcoholic.
You hang around people who drink.
And I say you want to stop drinking.
Those people want to bring you back in.
Like I used to be this guy who wasn't worth anything.
Now those people who are still there 16, 17, 18, 30 years ago,
they're trying to get you back there.
So the hardest part,
you gotta see who you're hanging out with, man.
Why are you getting up again so early?
Why are you doing this?
Yeah.
Sometimes you just gotta be long, man.
Get your shit in.
When you fight, always move forward.
Even if you're only moving forward
a half an inch at a time,
just always move forward.
So when you're moving forward,
100% of your attention is forward.
But if you're moving backward,
even a half an inch at a time, half of your attention is
always behind you and where you're going. So always move forward, always have it,
dare to go forward. Whenever you have a choice of either staying still and
playing it safe or moving forward, move forward. Not because you'll necessarily
succeed every time, because it reinforces and cements the habit of moving forward.
