It's that simple. You are what you consistently do. What you practice in private you'll be rewarded for in public.
Starting point is 00:01:14 Your habits reinforce a particular identity. Sometimes this can be positive and sometimes it can be negative. Hard things, easy life. Easy things, hard life. The choices you make now are going to determine who that future version of yourself is. So choose wisely. Your outcomes in life are often the lagging measure of your habits. The trajectory of your life bends in the direction of your habits. The world is very results oriented, and that's fine. We all want to get better results. But almost all the results that you want are a lagging measure of your habits. Your bank account is a lagging measure of your financial habits.
Starting point is 00:01:59 Your physical fitness is a lagging measure of your training habits. If you want your results to change, the habits that precede them are the things that actually need to change. I don't think that means you have to be radical about it. It doesn't mean that you have to upend your entire life. Really all you need to do is focus on having like 5 good minutes. You can do a lot with 5 good minutes. 5 good minutes of exercise can reset your mood. 5 good minutes of conversation can restore a relationship. 5 good minutes of writing can make you feel great about the manuscript again. It doesn't take much to feel good to get back on the path to continue to make progress. You are the product of your daily habits. Where are you right now? Are you happy with where you are right now? Are your habits in line with where you want to be? And look, we can't change the past.
Starting point is 00:02:45 We can feel regret and acknowledge that. But as we look into the future, we have to define two points. Number one, where are we right now? And where do we want to be? And once you've done this, you can identify the daily habits that are going to get you there so that in a year from now, you're congratulating yourself and you're proud of the choices that you've made to reach your goals. Let's say that you set a goal. That this is the year that you are going to run your first marathon.
Starting point is 00:03:18 You're going to train for it, you're going to finish the race. It's going to take you time to achieve that goal. But if you make it a habit to wake up every day and get out the door and go for that training run within a matter of days, something kind of crazy happens. You experience this massive change because you start to see yourself differently. You start to see yourself as a runner. Now have you achieved that goal yet? No, that's going to take time.
Starting point is 00:03:43 But the power of habits is that as you practice them, they start to change your identity. They become evidence that you're the kind of person that goes for a run. So in the beginning, habits are just something that you and I do. But over time, habits change who you are. Habits. Habits are everything. Habits are also known as decisions and the decisions we make on a consistent basis depict who we are as human beings. So the choices we make define who we are. If you make good choices you are going to be a good person. If you make great choices you most likely are going to be a great person. If you make bad choices chances are do the math. Our habits define who we are. Our habits also tend to define the people we hang out with.
Starting point is 00:04:27 So, you want to make a change, understand that it's all about the decisions that we make. Improving by 1% isn't particularly notable. Sometimes it isn't even noticeable, but it can be far more meaningful, especially in the long run. It goes on to say, if you can get 1% better each day for one year, you'll end up being 37 times better by the time you're done. 1% better every day means 37 times better in a year. Nothing can replicate that. There are no shortcuts to arrive at that type of progress or growth. None. There is only one habit that you need to achieve whatever you want in life.
Starting point is 00:05:05 And it's not meditation, it's not journaling, it's not waking up at 5 a.m. In fact, you can do all those things and still manage to be a complete loser. The only habit that you need to worry about implementing in your life is the habit of doing what you say you're going to do. There is no trendy internet habit in this world
Starting point is 00:05:24 that will produce such massive results as simply making your words and your actions congruent. If I was a betting man, I would never in a million years bet that the reason why you are unsatisfied with your life is due to a lack of cold showers and affirmations. If I was a betting man, I would put all of my chips on the fact that you say one thing and then do another. Get serious. You've really got to get serious. You don't have to be grim, but you must be serious. I know a guy that's got a half a dozen jokes keeping him from becoming wealthy.
Starting point is 00:05:59 He's not known as rich. He's known as a joker, which I guess is okay if that's the kind of life you want to live. But it really isn't the best way to live. To go from average to fortune, you must get serious. And you must get serious about two very important things. Number one is setting your goals and where you want to go. Designing the next five, the next 10 years is so vitally important. Then you have to get serious about another important subject. And that important subject is called personal development. Personal development is striving hard to become the kind of person that you want to be. Ten years from now you will surely
Starting point is 00:06:37 become someone. The big question is, who? What are you becoming? You are what you consistently do. The problem for people watching this video, for you, your problem, is that you know where you want to go, you know what you want to accomplish. You actually even know the habits that you need to do. You're just not doing them consistently. You get motivated, you get inspired, you get pumped up.
Starting point is 00:06:59 Something happens in your life that then makes you want to go and drive further, harder, faster, let's go. And then you fall off the track. You go back to the old ways, you go back to your old habits, and then you don't end up accomplishing your goals. Even though you know you're capable, you know it's possible, you know you could do it, you have done versions of it in the past, but you're not consistent on it.
Starting point is 00:07:22 That's the problem. You have to choose who you're going to be. And you don't make this choice once, you don't make it twice, you don't make it three times but you're not consistent on it. That's the problem. You have to choose who you're gonna be. And you don't make this choice once, you don't make it twice, you don't make it three times or four times or five times. You make it every single minute of every single day. With every single action you take,
Starting point is 00:07:34 with every decision you make, you are affecting who you're going to be in the future. When you go to the gym, you are choosing to become a strong person. You are choosing to become a healthy person. When you scroll on TikTok, instead of work on your business, you are choosing to be broke. When you're prompted to make a decision, ask yourself, who am I choosing to be with
Starting point is 00:07:51 this decision? Because the choices you make now are going to determine who that future version of yourself is. So choose wisely. Everything changed for me when I understood this philosophy. Learn to work harder on yourself than you do on your job. That's the simple philosophy that changed my life forever starting age 25. If you work hard on your job, you can make a living, which is fine.
Starting point is 00:08:15 If you work hard on yourself, you can make a fortune, which is super fine. I didn't mind working hard on my job, but things didn't seem to change that much. Then I started working hard on myself. So let me put it in a philosophical phrase now. This is worth the price of whatever it costs for you to be here today. Here it is. Success is something you attract. Success is not something you pursue. It's something you attract by becoming attractive. You can have more than you've got because you can become more than you are. If you can multiply your value by 3 by 5, you can easily multiply your income by 3 by 5, by 10. But the key to doing it is to work hard on yourself.
Starting point is 00:08:56 Small habits, showing up in little ways, mastering the art of showing up, trying to get a little bit better each day. Those are all things that you can keep in mind as you try to just live one good day today and be on a good trajectory. What you practice in private you'll be rewarded for in public. A lot of the day-to-day habits that we do each day either help or hinder us in life. A lot of our habits that we create are negative ones that feel good in the short term but are often terrible for us in the long term when it comes to our health. Take getting up early as one example. It's very difficult to get up in the winter mornings, especially when it's dark and cold. But early mornings
Starting point is 00:09:39 for a lot of us can be the most productive of times to get the selfish things we need to get done before the world wakes up. The only shortcut to life is to never miss a day. One, because of compounding interest and two, because sometimes you get lucky. And you'll never miss a lucky day if you try every day. If you don't try every day, you might miss your lucky day. And that's what people don't understand. If you never miss a day and you never don't try and you're always on time, was I late today?
Starting point is 00:10:11 No, on time. And you try and improve every aspect of your life and you're a professional and you try and make sure that you analyze your decisions. You give yourself feedback. You don't make mistakes. You're not lazy. If you try and you make it to the top, you end up elitist because you look at the people down below and you're like, well, why didn't you try?
Starting point is 00:10:27 If you don't want to be average, stop doing average. If you don't want the same outcome as your friends, stop doing what your friends do. If you want extreme results, do extreme. What you do has to be conducive to what you want. If you want more money, you should be learning more valuable skills. If you want to get in better shape, you should be in the gym. If you want a better friend
Starting point is 00:10:47 circle, you should be out in the world talking to people. So many of you want something different and then you do the same thing. It is so remarkably simple, yet it's too difficult for you. You want some magic answer. You hop from influencer to influencer trying to find the next magic answer so you can sit behind your keyboard and make $10,000 a month doing nothing. Get a circle of high value people doing nothing. Meet the girl of your dreams doing nothing. It is not real. Whatever lens you view reality from is broken. Change your actions or nothing changes. It's that simple. And this is my favorite rule from James Clear, which is,
Starting point is 00:11:20 a habit missed once is a mistake. A habit missed twice is the start of a new habit. Never miss two days in a row. So this idea that like start by keeping these small commitments to yourself that you make. It's about the consistency of the small steps. Your brain learns patterns. You show me your habits and I will tell you how successful you will be able to continue to be in the long run. A habit is when you've done something so many times that your body now knows how to do it better than your conscious mind. It gets changed the way I live my life.
Starting point is 00:11:47 I cultivate so many little routines out of every day. Small steps stick. Just a little, little bit of progression. And that makes you feel good. The first step has to be incredibly small. Do that. Make it so small that you can't say no to it. And then what's next?
Starting point is 00:12:01 And then what's next? There's a version of you that never sleeps in, never skips training, never wastes time. There's a version of you who never fails. It is waiting for you. Genuinely ask yourself a question. You at home. If you had done those things for the last two years, you never skipped a training. You never wasted time. You never scrolled TikTok. You never sat aimlessly on the internet typing in garbage, never played video games.
Starting point is 00:12:26 You never wasted time. You never skipped training. You were training every single day. You never slept in. You were never lazy. There's this version of you. Imagine the person you would be. Genuinely imagine what you would look like.
Starting point is 00:12:39 Imagine where you would live. Imagine the car you would drive. Imagine how much your woman would respect you. Imagine the love you would see in her eyes when she looks at you with adoration like a king. Imagine your existence. That person is waiting for you. And the only thing that's stopping you from being that person is your monumental laziness. You can have it. The universe is very giving. It will give you anything you work for. I've never seen somebody try for something with all of their might and not get it. The only people who do not have the things they want are the people who do not try for
Starting point is 00:13:07 them. I've never seen a person wake up and say my only dedication in life is to solve a Rubik's Cube and fail. You are not stupid. You are not incompetent. You are lazy and arrogant. It's extremely important you understand that that person is waiting for you and you are declining that version of yourself in the multiverse and the many different versions
Starting point is 00:13:24 of the universe that exist. There is a version of you that does those exact in the many different versions of the universe that exists There is a version of you that does those exact things and he is a greater person than you can even fathom You can transform yourself into that guy. You can be a top G. That's exactly what I did I knew who I was gonna have to end up being before I became that person my brother and I are not from rich families We are not from advantage to beginnings, but I knew I had to be a big strong fighting billionaire That's what I knew I had to be Discipline is the key to success your outcomes in life are often a lagging measure of your habits a lot of the time people Talk about you know I want to have more money, or I want to lose weight, or I want some kind of results
Starting point is 00:14:00 but the truth is Your bank account is a lagging measure of your financial habits your weight is a lagging measure of your financial habits. Your weight is a lagging measure of your eating habits. Your knowledge is a lagging measure of your learning and reading habits. And so it's actually, we think the thing that needs to change is the bank account or the test score or the number on the scale, but actually the thing that needs to change are the habits that precede those outcomes. It's like, well, how do we come to believe things about ourselves? Because when you come into the world as a baby, you don't have any preset beliefs or
Starting point is 00:14:29 notions. Consistency is like the number one habit that most people just can't do long enough. Like they can't, it's crazy because they'll be right there where it's going to, it's going to be a breakthrough and then they self-sabotage. And it's like, you know what? I've heard so many people say this like a thousand days. I think Andy says this, a thousand days of just doing a thing every day to work on you. If we define a habit as a redundant set of automatic unconscious thoughts, behaviors and emotions that's acquired through repetition.
Starting point is 00:15:04 Habit is when you've done something so many times that your body now knows how to do it better than your conscious mind, then it's programmed subconsciously. So then when the body knows how to do it better than the conscious mind, then for the most part the greatest habit we have to break is the habit of being ourselves. If you keep thinking the same way, if you keep making the same choices, if you keep doing the same things, if you keep reproducing the same experiences and feeling the same emotions, your biology begins to become hardwired in a sense. It becomes programmed.
Starting point is 00:15:33 You'd have to change the way you think, the way you act, and the way you feel. But if you want to see if you're a brave person, what they call the four o'clock in the morning courage, wait when things go completely to pieces, when things are the worst, when your very best deal falls apart and your rent is late and you're tired and you're sick and everybody is mad at you and your car doesn't work, then it's the person that picks themself up and says nothing is going to stop me. The best quality in the world that you can develop is to develop the quality of being unstoppable. Develop the quality of being unstoppable. Say in yourself that no matter what life throws at me,
Starting point is 00:16:06 it'll never stop me. No matter how rough it gets, I will never quit. And nothing will ever stop me. Not only have to be consistent, long enough. Can you be patient long enough and deliberate long enough and basically wear everybody else out? Your habits are the way that you embody a particular identity.
Starting point is 00:16:27 Every morning that you make your bed, you embody the identity of an organized person, someone who's clean. Every time you go to the gym, you embody the identity of someone who is fit. Every time you sit down to write a sentence or a page, you embody the identity of someone who's a writer. And so in that sense,
Starting point is 00:16:43 habits are like every action you take is kind of like a vote for the type of person who's a writer. And so in that sense, habits are like, every action you take is kind of like a vote for the type of person that you believe that you are. And as you take these actions, you build up evidence of a particular identity. And pretty soon your beliefs have something to like root themselves in. It's like, man, I showed up at the gym
Starting point is 00:16:58 for four days a week for the last three months. I guess like I'm the type of person who doesn't miss workouts. All right, maybe this is really something. Not only does it deliver those external results, the clean room or the you know bigger bank account, but also the internal results of shaping your sense of self-image and what you believe. That I think is the true reason why habits are so important.
Starting point is 00:17:18 We must keep moving. We must keep going. If you can't fly, run. If you can't run, walk. If you can't walk, crawl. But by all means, keep moving. If you do a quick Google search on the word motivation, you'll find over 4 billion results. If you do the same search on self-discipline, you'll find almost half of those results. When it comes to doing things we know we need to do, we often look for motivation as a source to get fired up and focused for the task in hand. The reality is, if you rely on motivation to get you places in this world, you won't get a lot of things done. This is because motivation is doing things when you feel like doing it. You see, when you're motivated, it's easy to start things
Starting point is 00:18:19 because we feel great before we do it, but that's not real life. In real life, the things we know we need to do are near on impossible to keep consistent with. Getting enough sleep, eating healthy food, exercising regularly. So how do we make sure that we get all these things in when it's so difficult to do. We need to start focusing on self-discipline. Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small
Starting point is 00:18:53 men who find it easier to live in a world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it. Impossible is not a fact, it's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration, it's a dare. If you're going to try, go all the way. Otherwise, don't even start. We all realize that if you grew up in a different culture or a different religion or a different community or household, you could adopt completely different beliefs if that was what you were raised in. I was like, well, how does that happen?
Starting point is 00:19:23 How does this internal story that we tell ourselves, our identity, become shaped and formed? I realized that it's mostly through the repetition of that story. What you come to realize is that your habits reinforce a particular identity. And sometimes this can be positive and sometimes it can be negative. Unchosen suffering is going to happen in life. Your parents are going to pass away, loved ones are going to die, your relationships are going to break down, your body is going to fail you, you're going to become ill or sick or destitute. Things are going to happen and you have no control over. And the only way that you can prepare yourself for unchosen suffering is with chosen suffering. If you're willing to suffer, and I mean suffer, your brain and your body, once connected together, can do anything.
Starting point is 00:20:06 Through repetition of things you don't wanna do, you develop mental, like an armor for your mind. Start to armor your mind, because your mind's like, okay, we suffer, we suffer every day, that's what we do. We do stuff that sucks every day, so then when the suck stuff comes, you're ready for it. And by purposefully choosing
Starting point is 00:20:25 difficult things you will arm yourself against that situation. It's still going to suck. But think about how much more fragile you would be if you hadn't overcome all of this stuff. But the mentality of a warrior is very different than normal mentality. You must be that person on that door, get ready to open it, thinking to yourself, if I die, so be it. One of the things that I've noticed for sure is this idea of the consistency long enough. I cannot tell you how many people, man, I've watched get so close and they just fatigue.
Starting point is 00:21:00 And I think the reason they fatigue is there's no external proof yet. So they don't get they people look for a lot of things number one They look for the external like hey, there's no evidence like my bank account isn't bigger Our sales aren't up my body hasn't changed yet the way I wanted to or they're obsessed with getting support From the people around you know, still my spouse hasn't bought it still my parents have about still my friends think I'm crazy and it just wears them down because they're like no if I just keep look they're probably not going to support you until you win and if you just know that going in it's not such a
Starting point is 00:21:38 big deal that you don't get it like most people only supports why most people aren't believers in faith they have to to see something. Yeah, prove it. They have to prove it. So you're going to have to prove it in life. I will do good no matter what. No matter what happens to me. I will do good no matter what happens to me. It's absolute rejection of the idea of being a victim. It's like no matter how much suffering comes my way, no matter how much undeserved suffering comes my way, undeserved and unjust, let's say, in spite of my innocence, I will not lose faith and I will do good. Discipline is doing things regardless of how you feel.
Starting point is 00:22:17 Discipline is pushing yourself to do things in the knowledge that it's going to suck before you get started. But once you've done it, you're going to feel awesome. It's hard to go to bed early and get a good night's sleep. But when you do, you have so much more energy and focus to attack the next day. It's hard to create a consistent exercise regime. But when you do, you get more self-confidence, energy, and mentally you're in a much better place. It's hard to eat a healthy, balanced diet.
Starting point is 00:22:54 But when you do, you wonder why you never did it before. As you look better, feel better, and have the energy to do so much more with your life, we need to start building up mental models for doing difficult things. Because it's these things that are going to completely change our lives. I say this quote to people every day,
Starting point is 00:23:15 hard things, easy life. Easy things, hard life. Until you make a decision that you no longer want to feel how you feel, or you no longer want to think the way that you think, or you no longer want to have the kind of results or no results that you have. Until you make that decision that, you know what, I know I don't feel great, I know I doubt myself, I know I've had a lot of bad things happen, I know there's a lot that I regret. I don't feel great, I know I doubt myself, I know I've had a lot of bad things happen, I know there's a lot that I regret, but damn it, with the time that I have left in my life,
Starting point is 00:23:48 I really wanna start to enjoy myself. I want to take better care of myself. I wanna feel happy. You don't even have to believe you deserve it yet. You can just want it. You've gotta start there. You've gotta start with wanting something better for yourself.
Starting point is 00:24:06 And then, I personally think the most important thing is to start acting like the person who has the things that you want right now. If you wake up each day looking for hard things to do before they come knocking on your doorstep, the rest of the day will be so much easier to deal with. If you avoid doing difficult things, then it's only a matter of time before they come knocking at your door, and when they do, you'll find it much harder to cope with the stress that they bring. Life, I found, is very counter-intuitive. When we're afraid of doing something, we do our best to avoid it. This is the amygdala part of our brain thinking that it's keeping us safe and secure, when in actual fact, what it's doing is preventing us from facing our fears and overcoming them.
Starting point is 00:24:56 I kept saying this to myself on repeat. There is no way Mel, if you've worked this hard, that you will not be rewarded. You have to believe that this moment is preparing you for something amazing that hasn't happened yet. Keep going. I repeated that over and over and over and over and over again as I wanted to throw in the towel, as I would start to bash myself, as I would start to feel sorry for myself and be like, no, there's just no way I'm going to believe that something amazing isn't going to happen. I've worked too hard. Something amazing that hasn't happened is coming. And when you get yourself into that mindset, it creates a sense of resilience and momentum
Starting point is 00:25:33 and resolve that you need in order to keep going when the shit hits the fan or when you feel disappointed or when life is beating you down. When we struggle with something, we need to expose ourselves more to it, not less. We need to stop listening to the voice in our head that's telling us to quit and keep pushing forward. Because when we do push forward and overcome those fears and anxieties, they become easier to deal with. We become better as human beings as we start living closer to our potential We build up confidence in our abilities to take on more and deal with whatever life throws at us each day We build self-esteem self-confidence and most importantly Self-discipline this kind of power cannot be absorbed by some book or some blog post that you read on the internet
Starting point is 00:26:23 it has to be experienced and practiced daily. And as I said at the start of this, what you practice in private, you are rewarded for in public. Only the disciplined ones are free in life. If you are in discipline, you are a slave to your moods. You are a slave to your moods. You are a slave to your passions. Let me be very clear. I'll never give up.
Starting point is 00:26:57 Never. In order for something new to come, something old must go. Let go of what you know until now. Empty the cup and start from the beginning. It's not easy to do but at the moment it's the only way how something that is blocked can be brought back to movement. You must spill the OT and pour in new one. Then things look different. There's always someone out there who's working harder than you. I'm haunted by that mother... Knowing that there's someone out there who's working harder than you. I'm haunted by that mother******.
Starting point is 00:27:30 Knowing that that someone out there is willing to forgo personal desires and comforts. Forgo sleep. Forgo whatever it takes to be better, to be the best. In life a lot of times, a lot of us have that person out there. It may not be a name or a face to him, but he exists. You make sure in life when you think about that person, you make sure they put a name or a face to him, but he exists. You make sure in life that you think about that person, you make sure they put a name and a face to it. You make sure the name and face is yours.
Starting point is 00:27:53 You do the haunting. Get in somebody's head. Own space. In old times when you want to quit because we're all human. You make sure you're number one thing. All those times and hours and days, you sacrifice to be the best. Say it hard. Just stop talking.
Starting point is 00:28:11 You have your vision, you have your business idea, your goal, whatever that may be. Just go. Stop telling everyone what you're going to do and when you're going to do it. Because really, no one cares. You don't need any type of validation or reassurance. You don't need anyone else's support. Because this is for you. This is your purpose, your legacy, your path.
Starting point is 00:28:31 You have everything you need to take that first step. And I promise you, once you get going, you will never look back. Develop a sense of urgency. Pick up the pace. Move quickly from one task to the other. Don't waste time. The faster you move, the more energy you'll have. The faster you move, the more you get done and the better you'll feel. The faster you move, the more in control of your life
Starting point is 00:28:54 you will feel and the more you will like and respect yourself. There was a kid who everyone underestimated. Too small, too quiet, too ordinary. But every day while they laughed, he worked. In the gym, in the books, in the shadows. He knew one truth. Effort beats talent when talent doesn't try. Years later they asked him how he did it, and he just smiled because they never saw the grind. It's the quiet hustle that makes the loudest impact. Impossible is just a big word thrown around by small men who find it easier to live in a world they've been given than to explore the power they have to change it.
Starting point is 00:29:39 Impossible is not a fact, it's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration, it's an opinion. Impossible is not a declaration, it's a dare. And when you get to the point where all you want to do is be successful as bad as you want to breathe, then you'll be successful. Listen to me, you've got to want to be successful so bad that you forget to eat. In order for things to change, you've got to be willing to get up and do something. You don't have to be perfect, but you've got to make a move. Pain is an indicator light that lets you know that you need to take action on something.
Starting point is 00:30:17 Reminder that if you want to be exceptional, you're going to be different from everyone else. That's what makes you exceptional. You can't fit in and also be exceptional. Both have discomfort. When you fit in, you have internal conflict because you're not being 100% you. When you're exceptional, you have external conflict because everyone sees you as different. Pick one. When your friends start to say, you've changed, remember it's because they don't know how to say, you've grown.
Starting point is 00:30:45 This is my favorite rule from James Clear which is a habit missed once is a mistake, a habit missed twice is the start of a new habit. Never miss two days in a row.
