Starting point is 00:00:00 Just go do something. Just doing it. Just doing it makes you do more. Like do more hardship makes you do more hard shit. Understand that you want it bad so you're willing to put into work and do things you don't want to do. It's what makes you have that confidence that you know how to push through and the mentality that I'm the type of do to get done. It doesn't mean I quit. I don't quit. You know, I may not make it the first time, but I'll come back. Knowing that that someone out there is willing to forego personal desires and comforts. Forgo sleep. Forgo whatever it takes to be better, to be the best. Failure has been achieved.
Starting point is 00:00:38 Thank God. Now, the only place to go from failure is to win. You have to achieve failure. You have to take it that far. Nobody wants to go that far. It's too scary. But you know something? I got news for you.
Starting point is 00:00:56 That's where winning is. It always has been. Nothing's changed since the 70s. Nothing, except people train not as hard. The people who are obsessed to the ones who change the world, at least change their world. He said, you know the difference between champions and everyone else? And I was like, what? He said, everyone always looks at them and says, what do champions have that I don't have?
Starting point is 00:01:16 And he said, they have it backwards. He said, it's, what do champions not have that I have? It's what do they lack? and it's an off button. They just don't stop. They just never stop. They just can't stop. Everything in their life is geared towards one goal.
Starting point is 00:01:34 Because this world we live in is tough. It's tough. It will beat you down. The world in the life they will live in is the ultimate competitor. It will try to take you out. It will find your weakness and it will just hammer you. It's like a personal curse. A hundred percent.
Starting point is 00:01:51 So if I can help you build, belief, build confidence to the point where nothing can hurt you because you know exactly who you are. Sun don't stop for nobody, man. It's not going to be up in the morning regardless. And the nighttime the moon going to be there. And you're going to look up. These days are going to keep going by. So do you let the days go by and look up and you don't waste of the year doing what? Or do you just pick it up? All right. You got to figure it out, made some mistakes. Life goes on. Let me figure out life from this point. I'm a life goes on type of guy. And I have a saying, right?
Starting point is 00:02:28 Interested people, watch obsessed people change the world. Everyone talks about maximizing their time. Kobe and I were interested in maximizing his focus. When you maximize your focus, it gave us more, it gave us more time. My philosophy is, why be normal when you can be the best? I don't want to be normal. I want to make the difference. So everything I do, I want to make the difference.
Starting point is 00:02:52 Because when I make the difference, I'm the best. And that is not arrogance, that is confidence. Go back to the gym, work, because you have more to show. You understand? Life continue. You cannot live in the past. Because pain, you're going to have all the time, uncertainty, and constant work. Constant work, constant work. It doesn't matter what's going to happen in your life.
Starting point is 00:03:14 You have to continue. This is the way I see the life. I want that. I want you to fail, and I want you to get up and do it again. The same thing in life is the same thing here. If you can do this, you can do anything. Anything. Right now you're 5% away. Five percent away from being a champion. The one mentality that you must have in life is that regardless of what's in front of you, you still must grind. I'll never be in the Olympics. I never be professional athletes, but still I grind. I fail at most things I do, but still I grind. I don't want to do half the shit I do, but still I grind. And that one day, you see me down a dark alley, run at 1 o'clock in the morning, no, one thing, I was grinding.
Starting point is 00:03:58 I want to see what you do when you're tired. Let me see how you push yourself. Come on, man. Get up. Get up again tomorrow. Get up again tomorrow. Get up again tomorrow. The next day. Get up. Get up. Get up. Keep going. How long can you maintain a positive attitude? Where's all this teaching? You're teaching people. You can't do shit yourself.
Starting point is 00:04:13 You need to show people that you could do it. The best motivational speakers to me are guys like David Guggins. One thing important is that we all have these moments, these moments in time that either make you or break you that can determine the rest of your life. The rest of your life can be determined by one simple decision. 19 years ago, 300 pounds, I was spraying for cockroach and made a decision to try to be a Navy SEAL.
Starting point is 00:04:39 My whole goal was to go on this path every day after work and to run a mile to mile and a half. This rock was about the 0.5 mark in my run. This walk was a moment that should have broken me. I got 0.5 into it. I weighed 297 pounds. I sat on this rock and I had decision to make. I wanted to quit.
Starting point is 00:04:58 I wanted to give up. I had to make a decision. The decision I made was to get up and keep on going. That one moment changed the rest of my life. Make the moment work for you. Create a life that you can't wait to wake up to. I saw that. I live that life.
Starting point is 00:05:11 I literally, I hate to sleep. I hate sleeping. I've never heard that before. I love every minute of my life. Love every minute of it. I can't wait to wake up tomorrow. The fish. Just don't jump in the boat.
Starting point is 00:05:25 You know, meaning you better go out there and do it yourself. You know, don't wait around and wait for someone to the hand deliver something. Go make it happen. You know, the fish don't just jump in the boat. If you want to go catch him, go catch them. You know, throw that line in the water and go do some work. And if it doesn't work that day, do it again the next day. The life you want is on the other side of a few hard conversations
Starting point is 00:05:43 and you're living a life you hate because you're too afraid to have them. Nothing changes in the winner's mind. Do you understand that? You have to be obsessed. You have to be mission focused. You have to be driven by something greater than what average people are driven by. You don't need great parents. You don't need like a private school.
Starting point is 00:06:02 You don't need to have this humongous GPA and all this other shit. What you need is the one thing I talked about my book, which is straight up, brutal work ethic. You have to be willing to outwork everybody in the world. You can control the work ethic, the consistent discipline, your attitude, your culture, how much you care, All those things are in you. They just need to be drawn out of you. And I think if you can shift from this is hard to no one else will be able to do this, then it flips from being this thing that you're like, oh, poor me to, oh, poor everyone else who's going to have try.
Starting point is 00:06:37 And I think that is so much more motivating as a frame for the exact same circumstance. Right. The guy who likes walking is going to walk further than the guy who likes the destination. You understand? And that's, it's easy to see. say, you know, it's easy to say this motivational shit or whatever. It's harder to put it into practice. It's so easy to be great nowadays, my friend, because most people are weak. Most people don't want to go to that extra mile. Most people don't want to find that extra because it sucks. It's miserable. It's
Starting point is 00:07:09 lonely. I know there's so many people that have the ability and just refuse to get off that couch, refuse to study a few more hours, refuse to go deeper, to go further. And that's where I gained the advantage. This is the quote that I've lived my whole life out because you might as well be dead. Seriously, if you always put limits on what you can do, physical or anything else, it'll spread over into the rest of your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus. A man must constantly exceed his level. If you had the opportunity to play this game of life, you need to appreciate every moment a lot of people don't appreciate their moment
Starting point is 00:07:50 until it's past everybody wants to know what I would do if I didn't win I guess we'll never know a lot of people can give up it's easy to give up it's easy it's easiest thing in the world to do I'm done I ain't going I ain't going to keep going
Starting point is 00:08:09 I don't feel like going to work the one yeah it's easy it's very easy but what's hard is going And, yo, yesterday I got nothing from working as hard as I could. Nothing happened from that. I'm going to do the same thing again today, but I'm going to try to go harder. That's the hardest thing in the world. To get up every day and give 100% and be in the same position that you were each day. But mentally know that you're trying and trying and trying, that's a real grind.
Starting point is 00:08:39 Like if you're saying, okay, I'm going to climb Mount Everest. You're at the bottom of the mountain and you look up and you're going, I'm not going to climb my lever is. Right? But if you break it down into sections and you're just one foot in front of the other, one step at a time, next thing you know you're at the top of the mountain.
Starting point is 00:08:55 You don't have to feel good about it. You just have to keep going. The feeling will pass, but you will remain. You are greater than your feelings. Going to bed late and waking up early to work for a few days won't kill you. You're not going to burn out. You're doing what it takes.
Starting point is 00:09:12 If you're one of those people that push work-life balance, just remember the people who like working a lot, don't care. I've never regretted trying harder at anything ever. Hard times last long, but an epic story feels like a lifetime. I'd say one of the strongest mental frames that has got me through my hardest times is thinking this will be the story that I will one day tell. And that means the harder it is, the bigger the dragon, the more epic the story, and by consequence, the more epic the hero. And if you think about the difference between winners and losers, winners define themselves by what they made happen, and losers define themselves by what happened to them.
Starting point is 00:09:59 And the difficult part of the lonely chapter is that the rocky cut scene lasts 90 seconds in the movie in last five years in reality. With no promise of it ever ending. No guarantee of glory. All right. You got one life. And at one life, the goal for us is to live it to the best of our ability from the beginning to what's said the end.
Starting point is 00:10:27 In the middle, in the beginning, middle, you're going to do things, you're going to make mistakes. You're supposed to learn and then move forward with the understanding of what, you're going to not to do. And when you move forward, life may get better. It may not, but somewhere along the lines is going to click. Just keep stacking days. Just keep stacking days. As long as you keep stacking days, I promise you, I promise you, you will see the change. But my coach used to always say everything that you want is on the other side of heart. Any person, any human realizes that if you want some kind of a good outcome, you're going to have to work hard for it. And if you,
Starting point is 00:11:09 and if you don't work hard for something, you're not going to get an outcome that's really worth much. Right. So being fearless means putting yourself out there and going for it. No matter what, go for it. Not for anybody else, but for yourself. Hard work brings great rewards. This is a reminder of the hard work and dedication that I put into everything that I've done. I'm not content because I know where I came from and I don't ever want to go back. You're lazy. You know exactly what to do, exactly what to do. Because even me, in my state of I can't read and write, I knew exactly what to do. It just sucks doing it. It sucks to do it. Imagine that you're in a movie and imagine the movie begins now.
Starting point is 00:12:04 And you're the hero of the movie. Yeah. What would that guy do? Yeah. What would that guy do right now? Yeah. Because you are. To be successful at anything, the truth is you don't have to be special.
Starting point is 00:12:20 You just have to be what most people aren't. Consistent, determined, and willing to work for it. No shortcuts. Effort, dedication, work hard. Because the talent is not enough anymore. And if you're not dedicated under percent, you're not going to reach the level that you want. There's so much opportunity on the other side of being willing to persist for an extended period of time on the correct path without getting positive reinforcement from your environment. And the longer you can stick with something without that positive feedback loop in terms of the big external thing, the easier the opportunities are because so few people can pursue them.
Starting point is 00:13:00 The job done fast. If all you did was this, set priorities and get the, the job done fast, that alone would cause you to stand out from 80 to 90% of the people that you work with. Today is the day. Today is the day that I will look back 10 years from now and say that was the day that everything changed. There's no hacks, bro. It's you against you. You against you. And if you misunderstand that, you have a real problem. Discipline your thoughts. Stop thinking too much Don't go into the past Don't go into the future
Starting point is 00:13:37 Be in the present Why? Because only then it's possible That the mind is free The capacity is free And now you can completely immerse into Whatever you are doing
Starting point is 00:13:51 And this means you have arrived You know my grandmother used to always say Never wish with what somebody else got Because you don't know what they did to get it and you don't know what they're doing to keep it, is, man, do what you do, right? Stop worrying about what everybody else is doing. Stop looking at what everybody else is doing. And stay focused on what it is that you feel God has called you to do specifically.
Starting point is 00:14:13 That's your greatness. That's where your power is. And some moments in life, the decisions you make on a moment-to-moment basis that add up to be the guy or not the guy. Tonight, I did something, you know, that I feel more of a guy for me, who I am. My guy. I will party later. I work hard now so the second half of my life I can do what I want.
Starting point is 00:14:36 That's been my mentality. I'm not going to trick off my early years for party. It didn't worry about struggling how I'm going to make it. How I'm going to take care of my family. How I'm going to take care of everybody else. Like, that's not going to be me. I'm going to grind it out now. You know what I'm saying?
Starting point is 00:14:48 I'm going to set up the foundation so I can enjoy myself later. That's always been my mentality. And that is what that works for me. Life isn't fair at all. At all. So what are you going to do? about it. I knew that no one was coming back to help me. No one was a miracle me to be somebody special. All my situations were on me now and solely on me. So, mentality is the only thing that gets us
Starting point is 00:15:14 through life. I was an underdog. We are all underdogs in life. Even the baddest person in the world should think that way. So you should always have, I've never arrived mentality. And the can't hurt me mentality is no matter where you come from, the sewer or wherever you think you're from, when I got out of the sewer, I got to the road and looked around and said, can't hurt me. Nothing should be able to hurt you. If you believe that, it starts to become true. Do you actually want to do this or not? Because if you actually want to do it, what's going to stop you? Nothing. And if you don't really want to do it, what's going to stop you? Just about anything that comes up. Just about any obstacle it gets in your way becomes an excuse. It becomes a reason.
Starting point is 00:15:58 It comes a rationale for not proceeding down. on that path. When I start doing things I don't want to do, I grow. Yes. That is a, that's a lesson that people need to hear and learn. It's so important because everybody just wants to be comfortable. Everybody wants to sit in the car. I don't want to go outside.
Starting point is 00:16:14 It's cold. I don't want to do this. It's hot. Like, you've got to do things that you don't want to do because you show your body that your mind is the boss. Your mind is telling your body what to do and then you have control. That you can't just wait for things to get perfect. You got to just go out and do stuff.
Starting point is 00:16:30 You need discipline because motivation is not there every day. I'm missing motivation most days. Sometimes I got motivation. A lot of days, like, got to get to the gym. And then once I get going, then I feel great. And I feel great when it's over. But it's that beginning part that's hard because your body wants to stay comfortable. It's never going to make you feel good if you're leaving it on the table.
Starting point is 00:16:52 If you're not exercising your potential, if you don't have a purpose, you don't have a mission. The reason is because you, know that you're letting your potential die on the vine. You're letting your potential go to waste. And that is an underlying condition that's causing you this anxiety, causing you this stress, causing you this uncomfortable place that you're trying to fix with all this modern day. And by the way, my work. Okay.
Starting point is 00:17:21 It might help. It might make you feel a little bit better. But the reality is you need to solve the underlying problem. When the underlying problem is you're not exercising your potential. And for that reason, that's it. What have you learned about how to deal with and overcome fear? Go. Go.
Starting point is 00:17:41 When all that, all that fear that's in your head, all the what-ifs and the scenarios that you create inside your own mind that are way worse than anything that is actually going to happen, they all disappear when you go. So just take action and start moving forward. And it, that is the, that is the moment that can last a million years is waiting to go. You're upside down financially. You relationship went back, went south. You got, whatever those things are, your credit card debt is up. You, you got fired for your job. Okay, you're in a terrible situation.
Starting point is 00:18:24 What are your options? What you have to do is, well, you kind of have to prioritize an execute, right? Like, okay, I got. got all these bad things going on in my life. What is my biggest problem right now? And you've got to say, okay, I got to start with solving that problem. And you got to start to going back to the, I think it was the initial thing that we talked about, take action.
Starting point is 00:18:45 You've got to take action and move forward. I would sit down at the table with you and I'd say, if you really want to be transformed, you have to live an intentional life. This is so simple, I don't want you to miss it. Most people don't lead their life. they accept their life and when you accept your life you are living on things
Starting point is 00:19:06 that are not worthy of your time and effort and energy and you heard me say in a moment everything worthwhile is uphill the reason I want you to understand that is to go uphill you have to be intentional nobody ever went uphill by accident you've never read a book on accidental achievements
Starting point is 00:19:22 you have to be intentional with what you do and who you are it is really about the journey Yeah. It's just hard when you're not where you want to be in life. And if you're listening to this and you're just not satisfied with your position in life, it's hard to think that way. All you want is that thing.
Starting point is 00:19:42 But you've got to somewhere along the line figure out how to enjoy yourself. Somewhere along the line, figure out how to just go as hard as you can, but also enjoy it. Try to enjoy it. because that changes the whole tone of the experience. And I think that makes you more successful. I really do because I think you have more energy, you have more focus, and you collect better energy around you from other people.
Starting point is 00:20:11 They feel your energy. They're inspired by the way you live your life and how you treat people and what you do and how you do things. And they want to do a similar thing. They want to do something that makes them feel that way, and they want other people to feel that way as well, and it's got the butterfly effect. It just goes through all the people that are around you.
Starting point is 00:20:32 You're going to lose sleep. You'll doubt whether it'll work. You'll stress to make ends meet. You won't finish your to-do list. You'll wonder whether you made the right call and have no way to know for yours. This is what hard feels like, and that's okay. Everything worth doing is hard.
Starting point is 00:20:49 And the more worth doing it is, the harder it is. The greater the payoff, the greater the hard. If it's hard, good, it means no one else will do it. More for you. Because in the early days, hard was, ooh, stop, this isn't good. I should, I should, this is a warning sign, this is a red flag, I should slow down or I should stop, you know, I should pivot. But the more I think about it as a competitive landscape as I'm clear on what this path is supposed to look like. And these rocks and these dragons are things that I'm going to have to slay along the way to get the princess or get the treasure.
Starting point is 00:21:24 I get happier about the harder it is because I know that no one else will follow. It's a selection effect. It won't get harder. Like this is the hardest part. And so if you can just make it through this, everything else is downhill. It's not that the things that the dragons are going to slay aren't going to get bigger. They are. But you become so much more equipped to slay them back.
Starting point is 00:21:48 And you have so many more allies. You have people in the stands cheering for you. You have the audience. You have all of these other things that are behind. But in the beginning, it's just you with a stick against a bear. No one ever tells stories about the hero who made it all happen immediately and had no hardships. No one cares. Everyone loves the story because we can see ourselves in the character and how much we hope to be like them.
Starting point is 00:22:12 And it's the being like them, not the having what they have that we usually like. The person you have to spend the most time listening to in your life is yourself. Try not to lose their respect. How on earth do you think that you're going to do you think that you're going to be? to be able to move mountains and get out of that relationship that you don't like and move countries or change career when you can't not hit snooze even though last night you promised yourself that you weren't going to hit snooze. And it's how people that are able to do extraordinary things have been able to get there. If I'm running on a treadmill and I get to mile nine and I get complete cramp
Starting point is 00:22:44 in one of my legs and I know I've told myself I'm going to run 10 kilometers today, he goes, I will have to limp the last mile even if no one's watching because I can't let the demon in and if I let the demons in, they'll show up in the 11th round of a championship fight when there's 50,000 people watching me in the audience, and I know deep in myself story that I'm the type of person that quits when things get hard because I got off that treadmill at mile nine when no one was watching. The commitments we keep to ourselves and what we do when no one's watching is the most persuasive evidence that governs everything we then do every day thereafter. You can have what you want in five years, but there's two conditions. You have to know what it is,
Starting point is 00:23:24 and you have to aim at it. If I could have what I wanted, what would satisfy me? And you might think, well, I could never get that. And I could say, well, maybe not, but I'll tell you one thing, man. You can move towards it. And I know that everyone who knows the underlying neuroscience knows this.
Starting point is 00:23:42 Almost all the pleasure is in the moving toward. So even, you know, you don't want to set up a goal that's so high that there's just no possibility that a schlub like you could ever manage it, but God only knows what your upper limit. it is, you know. But, but if you set up a goal that you think is, you know, just on the edge of conceivability, then every time you move even a tiny bit towards that, you're going to think, good work, man, good work. You get a little kick from that. You get a little stronger from that.
