Starting point is 00:00:00 The most important conversation you will ever have is the one you have with yourself. There is a relationship between discipline, motivation and obsession, right? So discipline is I will make myself do the thing. Motivation is I want to do the thing and obsession is I can't not do the thing. And a lot of people look at people who are now disciplined and what they don't realize is that their current discipline is just the echo of a past obsession. You got to work.
Starting point is 00:00:33 Your time is going to happen. You're here for a reason, but you got to be ready because if you're not, it's on you. You got to work no matter what. Master the three Ws, you got to want it, you got to work it, then you got to win it. Now, how bad do you want it?
Starting point is 00:00:45 Because if you want it bad enough, you're going to work it. Then if you do those two, you're going to win. If your 20s do all of that, work day and night. Really? Do as many things. Learn as much as you can, fail as often as possible. What about work-life balance in your 20s? Okay.
Starting point is 00:01:01 Because that's the time to put in the hard work. Your work-life balance actually comes out later. Balance is important, but you have to first go to war with yourself. You've got to figure out what you're about and be proud of who you are before you start to get that teeter-totter nice and balanced. If you don't have a to-do list, you're going to sit back and it's fade away. The consistency of work, Monday, get back. Tuesday, get better, Wednesday, get better, right?
Starting point is 00:01:28 And you do that over a period of time, you know, not like one month or two months. I mean, it's three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten years. And then you, you know, you can get to where you want to go. It's two a.m. right now. No one here. Monter to mile, me and you, and where we want to go tomorrow. 2 a.m., what I love about 2 a.m., is that we're not living about the clock, man. If you go to the clock says it's 10 o'clock time to go to sleep or nine to five time to go to work,
Starting point is 00:01:55 If you're in bed right now and you're rolling around, you can't fall asleep, get up. It probably means you haven't done an honest day's work to earn that rest at night. 2 a.m. Not a person's here. The best way to fight the demons that chase you in the night is to stop and turn around. Turn around. Face them. Man up. Don't you feel better when you'll accomplish something and you work through something and you man up? Well, Confucius had a great saying that, you know, every man has two lives. And the second starts when he realizes he has just one.
Starting point is 00:02:24 Be uncomfortable. do something that sucks every day because you're constantly trying to sharpen that sword as a man and the sword is your brain. The bad days create the story that I'm one day going to tell myself about what I got through. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:02:39 Yeah. Without the bad days, the story would be way more lame. There would be no glory in overcoming anything because what did you overcome? It was all just 40 to 60, you know, vanilla ice cream, mush, gray, like existence. I'm clear on what this path is supposed to look like. And these rocks and these
Starting point is 00:03:00 dragons are things that I'm going to have to slay along the way to get the princess or get the treasure. I get happier about the harder it is because I know that no one else will follow. It's a selection effect. And I think if you can if you can shift from this is hard to no one else will be able to do this, then it's it flips from being this thing that you're like, oh, poor me to oh poor everyone else who's going to have to try. If you want some kind of a good outcome, you're going to have to work hard for it. And if you don't work hard for something, you're not going to get an outcome that's really worth much. I have to ask this guy. I have to understand why he works like that. So after the games, I'm like, hey, Kobe, like, why were you
Starting point is 00:03:43 in a gym for so long? He's like, because I saw you come in. And I wanted you to know that it doesn't matter how hard you work, that I'm willing to work harder than you. Now, the worst position to be in is to have that competitive drive, but not the discipline to deploy it. That's when you're ruthless, because you are going to spend your entire life feeling like you didn't fulfill your potential. It's not a talent. It's just realizing that we stop way short of our true potential. You got to do it alone. You got to do it broke. You got to do it scared. You got to do it when you don't know what's going to happen. You got to do it when you don't feel like it. You got to do it even when you're nervous. You got to do it even when you don't have the answers because you'll figure it out as you go.
Starting point is 00:04:23 You know, that's the secret to manhood. Doing the thing, in spite of not wanting to do the thing, is discipline, right? You don't need motivation to get yourself up to go and do a thing. Make the promise small, build it up step by step. Know that you are going to have setbacks. And this is my favorite rule from James Clear, which is a habit missed once is a mistake. A habit missed twice is the start of a new habit. Never miss two days in a row.
Starting point is 00:04:48 If you feel like right now you're looking around with and you're lost or direct, I would take about 15 minutes and figure out what the hell you want to do with your life and I would start getting after it You know when you're when you're going through something Really challenging how do you show up within it? Do you choose to become a victim of complaining and misery and shitty or do you find meaning in how you show up in the suffering? Champions are missing something that everybody else has Which is an off switch in order to become a champion?
Starting point is 00:05:21 In order to become a champion, you almost lose, almost, you certainly lose an off switch. But you lose everything except for the pursuit, right? Everything becomes sacrificed. Your friends, your family, your social life, your sex life, your your financial position, your health. If you're prepared to make that sacrifice, the likelihood is that you'll be beaten by somebody that is prepared to make that sacrifice. And I'm telling you from the bottom of my soul, It is so easy to beat people today. They are so soft. They have no work ethic.
Starting point is 00:05:55 No one can stick with anything. Everyone's distracted. They're on social media. They're counting their fanifications. Because they can't stick. They can't say no. There comes a day where push comes a shelf. We're being mediocre and being like average and it burns.
Starting point is 00:06:08 It sucks so much. You can't deal with it one more day and you get off and you create something. It's always been there. It's always been inside of you trying to come out. But you've got. never wanted to unwrap it because there's too much pain and commitment. You were scared you're going to fail. You're scared if you started, you never finished yet. You didn't want to tell anyone about it. You knew it was there, but you never wanted to embark on it. You're not scared
Starting point is 00:06:33 of losing. You're scared of people watching you lose. You're not scared of trying. You're scared of people watching you try. You're not scared to start with nothing. You're scared of people watching you start with nothing. But the truth, no one is watching as closely as you think. And even if they are, their opinions are not predictions of the future, just reflections of their own insecurities. So start now.
Starting point is 00:07:00 Fail fast, learn quicker, and keep moving. Their judgment doesn't define you unless you let it. People who were able to say that situation was very difficult to me and I'm going to keep going. I mean, it's definitely not the people that give up. I can guarantee that the one way to ensure that you fail is to give up
Starting point is 00:07:19 when you face adversity. Mediacity feels so good. So we love surrounding ourselves with mediocre people. They give us a get-out jail free card. Whenever life gets hard for us, they tell us it's okay. Don't worry about it. We don't want to surround ourselves
Starting point is 00:07:38 with those people out there who are getting to every day, holding us accountable, making us feel uncomfortable. People who are challenging us At every turn of life, those people scare us. That's exactly where you need to be in your life with those people who put you in a world of questioning who you are. That's exactly where you want to go.
Starting point is 00:08:06 That's exactly where you grow. 99% of people in the world are convinced that they are incapable of achieving great things, so they aim for the mediocre. The level of competition is thus fiercest for realistic goals, paradoxically making them most time and energy consuming. If you are insecure, guess what? The rest of the world is too. Do not overestimate the competition and underestimate yourself. You are better than you think. What if I told you you're only months away from the life you've always dreamed of? The money, the body, the mindset, but only on one condition. You have to show up every day from here on out. Up until now that's not a price you've been willing to pay. But the reality is,
Starting point is 00:08:42 there are graveyards full of men that wish they could be in your spot. months to become the man you always knew you could be don't wait 10 years don't wait 10 minutes don't even wait 10 seconds the time to start is now for me the biggest way of life to fail is to know what you want to do never let him never never let him know so when I disappear you know I'm doing something you know I'm doing something is that when it feels scary to jump Ian that is exactly when you jump otherwise you end up staying in the same place your whole whole life and that I can't do. What's your biggest fear in life? And my biggest fear, honestly, was, let's say you're God.
Starting point is 00:09:24 And we have a big, long line of people. And I made the heaven. I'm 75 years old. I'm 300 pounds. I made the heaven. I worked for equal at my entire life, praying for cockroaches. That's what I did. But I'm dead. I'm in heaven now. And you are at, you're judging us all now. So we're in line. We're all sitting there in line. I see my name. And God goes, hey, you say, read this, man. Now I'm reading this list and I'm seeing 182 pounds, Navy SEAL, Ranger School, motivational speaker, changing lives. Okay, man, pull up record. And I'm like, that's not me, man. And God looks at me and says, that's who you were supposed to be.
Starting point is 00:10:06 Sunrise, sun goes down. So that means there is a up, there is a down. Since we are born, we have inhaled 50% of our times, we have exhaled 50% of our times. Always the exchange between left and right, up and down, bright and dark, in and out, success and failure. It's just that this world is not propagating failure to you. It is propagating success to you. So our mind is looking for success. Instead of spending time, getting in the mood to work, just stop working, confront the work.
Starting point is 00:10:47 People think they need perfect conditions to start when in reality, starting is the perfect condition. When you say you're going to do something and then you follow through and you do it, not at the end when you cross the marathon, you finish it or your hands raised. I'm talking about right now the small steps in between the big successes, one sees no one sees this right now I'm saying like there's a confidence to it man there's a badge right here you know that it's getting ahead of the competition is an overwhelming sense of fulfillment and pride and satisfaction with that if you wake up every day where 84,600 in your bank account and every day at the end of the night it's gone whether you
Starting point is 00:11:32 waste it or not and then the next day you get another 84,600 dollars you would do everything in your power to spend it Because you know the next day you're getting $84,600. You don't want to leave nothing there. You'd make the best of it, right? You get 84,600 seconds. Why waste time? It doesn't carry over to the next day.
Starting point is 00:11:46 It doesn't earn interest. Take every day and every moment and make something of it, make something positive. You only got one life, guys. Again, if you work it right, you only need one. You get it all you have, you're going to get max potential back. And then who knows what can come. You don't have to tell anybody you're going to the gym.
Starting point is 00:12:06 Just go. You don't have to tell anybody you're starting that business. Just start. Hey, what were you doing for the last 65 hours? I know what I was doing. I was running all up and down the mountains. Getting it in. Do what I preach about.
Starting point is 00:12:22 Some of y'all are motivated by broke. Some of y'all are motivated by just wanting to accomplish the things that you want to accomplish. Other folks are motivated by materialistic things. It's a very simple concept. up. If you want it, you gotta go get it. Develop the quality of being unstoppable. Say in yourself that no matter what life throws at me, it'll never stop me. No matter how rough it gets, I will never quit. And nothing will ever stop me. Make the decision that you can be tired, you can be worn out, but nothing
Starting point is 00:12:52 is ever going to stop you. That's a wonderful decision. Because then no matter what life throws at you, you pick yourself up and you say, okay, give it, you know, give it your best shot, as Fonzie says, nothing is going to stop you. It's a wonderful feeling. It's a wonderful feeling. It's the basis of self-esteem. There's no future in cool. That's a trend. That's a fad. It comes and it goes, just like dope money.
Starting point is 00:13:12 Dope money comes quick and leaves quicker. We're here for a slow but for show. This is a marathon, not a sprint. Paso-Corto, Bista Laga, which is short steps, long vision. According to all aerodynamic laws, the bumblebee cannot fly because its body weight is not in the right proportion to its wingspan. But ignoring these laws, the bee flies anyway. Right now in life, your family is looking for that one guy right now.
Starting point is 00:13:38 They're looking for that one guy who's strong, who's that pillar for the family in hard times. Make sure they look around, they look around and find you. Be the guy who embraces the ugly, the miserable. Be the guy who embraces hard work, the grind. Don't be afraid of being hurt. Don't be afraid of sacrifice to some blood. You be that warrior in that garden. Right? And you stand strong. You be a strong man. You be a good man. And you just let the world rage around you.
Starting point is 00:14:11 That most men live lives of quiet desperation. It's one of my favorite quotes ever because it's true. And I've been that guy. You're just in this world where you just can't wait to just run away. But the only way I could be this person now is if I took that chance when I was 21, when I was dead, broke and had my cars repossessed and all that stuff. that's the only way you ever get where you want to go. You have to take a path that's dangerous. And most people want to take the safe path. And the safe path leaves you stuck in quiet desperation, almost every time it's hell.
Starting point is 00:14:51 I like to think about it as this. You can be two things at once. So you can have the feeling of being really frustrated with somebody. And that can be true. And you can also love them at the same time. You can be jealous of somebody. And you can also allow that to inspire you at the same time. You can be afraid, which is true.
Starting point is 00:15:19 And you can still find the willpower to push yourself or discipline to push yourself forward. You can be deeply in a state of grief. having experienced one of the biggest losses or betrayals of your life and still experience a moment of joy as you're standing on the ocean and watching some bird dive into the sea. Human beings are very complex and when you start to understand you're not just one thing.
Starting point is 00:15:49 It gives you freedom to ride the waves of feelings, to ride the waves of experience and to kind of go down and go, oh, this is a terrible thing, and know that you will be able to come out the other side of it. Do you actually want to do this or not? Because if you actually want to do it, what's going to stop you? Nothing.
Starting point is 00:16:11 And if you don't really want to do it, what's going to stop you? Just about anything that comes up. Just about any obstacle that gets in your way becomes an excuse. It becomes a reason. It comes a rationale for not proceeding down that path. And this is interesting too. When you talk to people that went to seal training, that didn't make it, most of the time, it's some reason.
Starting point is 00:16:35 There's a medical reason. There's a family problem. There's very few people that look at you and say, oh, I quit because it sucked. When you're built different than everybody else and you have this desire for more and this desire for achievement and this desire to win, everybody else looks at you like your stuff, like you're stuff. And they'll tell you that too. You know, what's wrong with you?
Starting point is 00:16:53 Like, why can't you just relax? Why can't you just do this? Why can't because I'm just not built that way, man. And as I've gotten a little bit older, I've gotten better at accepting it. And it's sort of embracing the fact that this provides a lot of good. But there's a lot of things that you have to deal with that come that aren't so good. On one given night, if you worked hard enough, if you dream big enough, if you were tough enough and you made yourself tough enough, you sacrificed enough, you became polished and savvy enough. and technically equipped to do things that you had then,
Starting point is 00:17:32 you learned those things, and you just worked yourself to the bone. No matter where you came from, no matter what part of the world, no matter who your parents were, no matter what your poverty level may have been, may not have been. No matter what you had, what you didn't have.
Starting point is 00:17:47 No matter what, people had told you, didn't tell you, all of that. If you made yourself and took advantage of that opportunity, got yourself ready, and you were ready to behave, champion. You could get in that ring on one given night and make the world fair. Upgrade your life in silence. You don't have to tell anybody you're going to the gym. Just go. You don't have to tell anybody you're starting that business. Just start. You have to understand that if they're not a dreamer like you,
Starting point is 00:18:15 and if they're not on their purpose like you are, they can destroy that dream. They can destroy that dream. Because when you hear the one word, are you sure it's going to work? And they're putting acid on your plant. They're taking out the soil. They're blocking the sunlight. Because they're don't believe in you. So who you share your dreams with is so important. What have you got to lose? Exactly. And that was it. And it was like if everybody who's like at the bottom and feels like they have nothing going for them reframe that as I have nothing going for me, which also means that I have nothing to lose by taking action, it makes you a much more dangerous person. And I think that was the flip that I've had repeatedly shown to me in my life.
Starting point is 00:18:58 that allowed me to take the step that I was afraid to take. Life isn't fair. We have to understand that. It shouldn't be fair. It's a trial grounds, a testing ground. It's built to make us harder. It's built to make us as strong as we can, to test us, to drive us.
Starting point is 00:19:15 So, mentality is the only thing that gets us through life. I was an underdog. We are all underdogs in life. Even the baddest person in the world is to think that way. So you should always have, I've never arrived mentality. It's no matter where you come from the sewer or wherever you think you're from, nothing should be able to hurt you. If you believe that, it starts to become true.
Starting point is 00:19:36 You're too scared to show up and you sit back at home, wondering what if and everything else. No one in hell is going to call you in that opportunity because you weren't present. The winners always show up. They're willing to lose in order to gain. Big mental thing there, guys. This body is great as you are, as sharp as you make the arsenal. It can't do anything if you don't have confidence in yourself. We all fall down in life.
Starting point is 00:19:58 The question is who gets back up? You go after and you give it all you have. If you lose, at least you try, man. I failed. It's ten times more of a man than someone said, what if. Because what if never went to the arena. I love fear. The reason why, behind every fear is the person you want to be.
Starting point is 00:20:14 Fear is self-imposed, meaning it doesn't exist. You create it, you can destroy it too. It's an intangible. If you face your fears, guys, you will realize it's not that big. And once you face it, you go, oh my God, man, I've spent all this time running from it. It was so small. If I just faced it, my God, not only did I face it and I beat it back, energy is never
Starting point is 00:20:33 lost, transfer. That negative energy, I fear, it's destroyed, it comes back in its confidence. What else am I capable of? What else am I holding my back from that I'm capable of more? What am I running from when I don't need to? What else can I overcome? You face your fears, you become the person you want to be. You run from your fears, you're not living.
Starting point is 00:20:51 You're alive. One thing important is that we all have these moments, these moments in time that either make you or break you that can determine the rest of your life. The rest of your life can be determined by one simple decision. 19 years ago, 300 pounds, I was spraying for cockroach so I made decision to try to be a Navy SEAL. My whole goal was to go on this path every day after work and to run a mile to mile to half. This rock was about the point five mark in my run. This walk was a moment that should have broken me. I got point five into it. I weighed 297 pounds. I sat on this rock. and I had a decision to make.
Starting point is 00:21:29 I wanted to quit. I wanted to give up. I had to make a decision. The decision I made was to get up and keep on going. That one moment changed the rest of my life. Make the moment work for you. The more I heal, the less I'm ambitious. There's a moment when every boy realizes no one's coming to save him,
Starting point is 00:21:45 and that's when he becomes a man. And some boys never get there and stay children forever. And it's important when we step out of this. Like, this stuff matters because no one's effing coming to save you. No one's going to make you better at your business. No one is going to get you to be a better persuader of people or framer of people other than you. And I just feel like that's one of the more profound philosophical comments. There's a lot of grown men and women that are still boys and girls because they think someone else is coming to change their life.
Starting point is 00:22:18 You're a man. You are a man. Stand up and be a man. Make the hard decisions. Make the sacrifice. make the unpopular decisions and become comfortable in your own skin. And if you are not a person that you are comfortable being alone with, that is the one person in this universe that you have full power, full right and full responsibility to change. People see the trophies, but not the training ground. Everybody wants the view, but no one wants to climb.
