If you're waiting for January 1st to change, Big Dog, you've already fucking lost.
There needs to be some urgency.
Wake the fuck up, Big Dawn.
If you know right here, right now, what is holding you back attacking Big Dog, all offense, no fucking defense, all gas, no brakes, Big Dog.
It's all about focus.
I don't care who you are, where you're from.
That doesn't matter.
It's having a focus and having a purpose.
You wake up every single day to get better to.
than you were yesterday. It doesn't matter with you. We're basketball player, hockey player,
golf player, painter, right? That doesn't matter. Right. You try to reach your full potential
by getting better every single day and that's the question.
You have to give it everything you got. No more TV, no more parties, no more playing. Get off the
phone. Sorry, I'm not available until the end of this year. No, I'm for real. You've reached the
right number, but you call me at the wrong time. Call me back January 1st. I'm about to get busy now.
me, it's going to be hard.
But I'm exactly where I wanted to be
because I realize I've got to commit
my very being to this thing.
I got to breathe it, I got to eat it,
I got to sleep it.
And until you get there,
you'll never be successful in life.
I don't care what's happened up to this point.
I don't care if you spend the last week
crippling in bed.
Today is the day you get up.
Today is the day you start.
Tomorrow is not promised.
All you have is right.
right fucking now.
I'd much rather try and fail
than wonder what if the rest of my life
if I could have won.
You know what I mean?
I'd rather fail 300 times.
Everyone that felt that's ever succeeded
anything in life, guys,
they fail a thousand times
before they achieve that one thing.
Don't think that your first failure
means you're going to fail totally.
No, because in failure,
you find out where your shortcomings are.
If you don't fail,
then you don't know what to improve.
Why would you wait?
Tomorrow isn't guaranteed.
It takes time to get good and the sooner you start the sooner you act and the sooner you act the sooner you get
Step one is quite psychological because it's all well in good me having the tactics and strategies and the information
But if I don't have the motivation and if it's gonna matter anyway
So is step one
Psychological in some way? Absolutely
So many people forget the fact that we can't change what's happened
We can only change what's gonna happen
Learn from it change
move forward the part you that nobody sees where's your integrity behind the
scenes come where are your values behind the scenes what do your habits look like
behind the scene come on what kind of work are you putting in behind the
scenes come on drop down to give me 50 come on write it again come on believe it
again come on sing again record the soul again come on I'm talking to that athlete
I'm talking to that musician come on who are you out there you can't deal with it one
more day and you get off your ass and you create something it's always been there it's always
been inside of you trying to come out but you've never wanted to unwrap it because there's too much
campaign and commitment i need you to get up i need you to wake up i need you to get up because we got
work to do if you're going to do it if you're going to accomplish it if you're going to achieve it
Even if you're confused and it's cold and it looks crazy.
And they're going to need to know the difference between contribution and commitment.
Because there are two very different things.
See, everybody wants to contribute to destiny, but nobody wants to be committed to destiny.
The light is there.
It's at the end of the tunnel.
And no matter how fucking dark it's been up until this point,
no matter how dark your life has been up until now, the light is there.
It doesn't matter how hard you work.
I'm willing to work harder than you.
And I know every motherfucker ain't going to do what I'm going to do.
That's how you level up.
Stop being average when your potential is crying to come outside of you more than that.
No one will outwork me.
No one.
It's so easy to be great nowadays, my friend, because most people are weak.
Most people don't want to go to that extra mile.
You don't want to find that extra because it sucks.
Of course, Khalent, without work, it's nothing.
You gotta be hungry.
People that are hungry are willing to do the thing today others won't do.
There's no excuse not to be the hardest model you work in the room.
You have to want it.
I was not always this strong guy, you see.
I went through a lot of hard times in my life to get here today.
All I wanted to be was an uncommon man.
In my whole life, I was not that.
I was six foot one and 300 pounds.
I walked in the recruiter's office and he looked at me and he said,
you're fat and you're black.
He said, I basically had to lose 106 pounds in less than three months.
I came back three months later, 106 pounds lighter.
Thank you.
You have to wake up and you have to give yourself belief.
It's about gaining control of your mind,
putting things back in the proper perspective,
and then saying, I really do want to be here.
With every obstacle, I look at it as friction now.
Without friction, there is no growth.
You have to have friction in your life to grow.
So I start looking at all these different things versus the woe is me mentality.
Like, oh my God, look at my life.
My life's so f***ed up.
I come from this family.
I'm being beaten.
I'm being abused mentally, physically.
I started looking at it as a perfect trial ground.
So I had to flip it upside down.
that's okay, I'm suffering tremendously, mentally.
Use this to your advantage versus your disadvantage.
So that's what I did.
Versus looking at it as like, oh my God, what was me?
I'm never going to get out of here.
I looked at it as, okay, hang on a second.
If I can overcome this, if I can find some power in this,
some way to get through this,
that right there would be the fuel for the rest of my life.
And so I found great strength in suffering.
It showed me even more of what we have,
as humans if we're willing to go there and we're willing to push that extra step.
My people say, man, how do you do what you do?
At the end of the day, I ask myself one question, can I take one more step?
And usually the answer is yes.
So if you can answer that question and not take another step, that is real failure.
That is real quitting.
A lot of people can take one more step but they choose not to.
I don't know if you can take two steps.
You've got to answer that question after you take the first step.
But I can always take one more steps.
If I choose not to, that's on me.
And I got to live with that.
There's a lot of people in graves who have lived 100 years
and have never started their real journey.
Your real journey starts when you go outside that box
and you start climbing mountains.
It start climbing mountains.
And it goes on and it goes on.
And just when you're getting ready to quit,
you crest that final mountain, you get down and you look,
and there you are.
But you cannot find your peace,
peace you're looking for in yourself until you've overcome yourself.
Stick to your plan. Anticipate. Don't improvise. Trust. No one never yield an advantage.
Fight only the battle you're paid to fight. Each and every step of the way. Ask yourself what's in it
for me. This is what it takes. Choosing the plan isn't hard. Doing the plan isn't hard.
sticking to the plan is hard.
The money isn't made in the buy
and it's not made in the cell.
It's made in the weight.
I just feel like that's such an elegant way of thinking about it.
It's like the hard part about the plan
is sticking to the plan.
Like the plan wasn't bad.
Your first plan was good
because it's easy to go say
I'm going to work out three days a week
for the next year.
And it's a good plan.
Pretty good plan.
It's a pretty good plan.
And the interesting thing is that like
a mediocre plan that's stuck to
always outperforms an amazing and perfect plan
that you never stick with to begin with.
And I know this obviously from the fitness world,
but it applies to everything.
And so like the stick to it muscle
is the one that you have to flex.
And that's why like if you're going through things,
especially in the earlier days,
like I'm a race to start and stop and start and stop
and I try this thing, I try that thing.
It's normal because you haven't been reinforced enough
of sticking with something.
If you feel like right now you're looking around
and you're lost or directionless,
I would take about 15 minutes
and figure out what the hell you wanna do with your life
and I would start getting
after it. You see, you take things in your own hands and you push against it and you push against it
until it's upright and you stick to the plan. I heard a thing about Bill Walsh. He would script his first
15 plays of the game. It was irrelevant what was happening in the world because he had his plan.
Now that might have made him a little unflexible in some ways, but it also meant that if something
went wrong, he wasn't scrambling. It wasn't looking for order and direction.
because like there was a plan and all he had to do was stick to the plan.
You know what I noticed? Nobody panics when things go according to plan, even if the plan is horrifying.
But here's the thing. Once something's important to you, it never leaves your mind.
If you always dreamt about being a singer-songwriter and you never did it, you'll be haunted by that at the age of 70,
because it's still right here, stored in the back of your mind.
back of your mind. It's something that's meant for you that's trying to call to you. You see,
your dreams, you either pursue them or they fucking haunt you. You stick to what you put there on paper.
You take your time, you make the plan, and unless you really are sick or have some type of
of higher excuse, you just do what you have committed to. And this struggling of, there are still
so many distractions. No, but you stick to the plan.
I don't adapt anything.
I stick with a plan.
Stick with a plan.
The highest form of discipline is the ability to adjust and be flexible and adapt.
You're building the muscle either building the muscle that says, I do what I say.
I keep the commitments that I make.
Or you're building the muscle that says, I make excuses.
I don't do what I say.
I can't be counted on, right?
And so when we think about discipline, it's really about what promises are you going to keep.
And the tricky thing is you're keeping promises to yourself that nobody even knows that you made.
Discipline is kind of the gateway drug to everything else in authority.
And it's the gateway to composure, for sure.
But getting your discipline modified is one of the fastest ways to make everything else change.
And how do I fix my discipline if I'm an ill.
discipline person. Understanding what discipline is is the most critical element. And I define this
differently the most people. So I define discipline as your ability to prioritize the needs of your
future self ahead of your own, present self. And that's it. That's all that discipline is. I'm
prioritizing the needs of future me. The first question I ask is, how do I want to spend my days? And so
But then you draw a box and inside that box, how can we make the most money, reach the
most people, make the biggest impact, you know, make the contribution that you want to make,
but not outside of it.
And what happens a lot of the time is people do that in reverse.
They start by asking, how can we make the most money or reach the most people or make the
biggest impact?
And then they decide, oh, well, this is what I want to do, but it's actually outside of how
they want to spend their days.
And it's not going to work out well, because, you know, it goes back to our point previously
about is this fund?
You know, if they don't want to spend their time that way, you're just grinding for a little while and eventually it's not going to work.
That's the key for building systems that really work is, is this how you want to spend your days?
The person who wants to live the lifestyle is much better positioned to get the result.
I think everyone needs to realize that discipline is like a rubber band.
It stretches, right?
It stretches.
Sometimes it's like really, really tough and really flexed and you're good to go.
Other times it's a little flimsy, it's a little flimsy, and that's okay.
but do you know what you need to do to get it strong again?
Do you have the right people around you that you can lean on and go,
hey, but I need a little of help in this area without feeling like you might reject me
or I might feel like less of a man or less of a woman if I reach out?
And I think that's important.
Whether someone does the project or not doesn't matter to me.
What matters is that they are disciplined in areas of their life they know they need to be.
And all of that starts off by shedding the false identity
and putting on a new identity of the man that you or the woman that you want.
to be and then start living that life. It's literally that simple. Your outcomes are a lagging measure
of your inputs. Where you're at is just a lagging measure of the things that you've gone toward
that. And it seems like discipline is pretty much exactly the same. And that's where the line
between your future destiny is dictated by your current discipline. It's about doing the things
you don't like to do for an extended period of time without getting reward. And then discipline
then becomes not are you disciplined or not discipline, but how discipline are you?
Everyone who doesn't have discipline created this false identity of themselves as,
man, I'm just not a disciplined person.
Well, if you keep saying I'm not a disciplined person, you just keep going further away from discipline.
Discipline equals freedom.
Now it's time to create a legacy now.
You had your fun.
Now get your work.
Because if you sit down, you're not going to get back up.
No excuses.
Get back to fucking work.
It's time to get back to work.
But when you really want something, you're going to get it.
There's no excuses.
No excuses in everything.
You eliminate that.
Everything changes.
You embrace accountability, and it's game over in life.
I had to work harder than they did.
This is what I'm going to do, and this is what I'm willing to do.
And I will always outwork you because I love the game more than the stuff.
They may be more talented, they may be smarter, but they won't outwork me.
But I just work harder.
So after the answer, I'm like, hey, Kobe, like, why were you in the gym for so long?
He's like, because I saw you come in.
And I wanted you to know that it doesn't matter how hard you work, that I'm willing to work harder than you.
I will outwork you.
I will make it possible.
The real man says, like, I'm not going to make no excuses.
I'm not going to point the finger and say, Lewis, you didn't do this.
You didn't do that.
I'm going to take full ownership, full responsibility.
The biggest problem that you have had is not that you don't have resources.
It's not that you don't have supporters.
It's not that somebody doesn't believe in you.
It's that you have not believed in you.
Get your head in the game.
Stop sleeping on yourself.
Because if you do that, if you actually work as hard as you can, you have no excuses.
You have to accept that all your excuses are lies.
You're too tired or you're too sore.
or you're just plain not feeling it,
then it doesn't stop if you don't make it stop.
I want you to spend all your energy on overcoming your weaknesses
because behind every weakness you overcome is another level of success.
Whatever that goal is, whatever that insurmountable feat has been,
whether it's weight loss, financial, mindset, relational.
I don't care what it is, career, to be a CEO or an investor,
whatever it is, get it done.
This is not the year.
You sleep on yourself.
Every year you have not gotten it done
is because you're sleeping in yourself.
Wake up, wake up, wake up, wake up!
Wake up!
I still have to fight every day.
So there's no excuse.
There is no reason.
There is no if-ans or buts.
What will it take for you to make it happen?
If you don't make it, it's on you.
And that's it.
There's nobody else to blame.
everything is your fault.
Everything.
The good stuff in your life, that's on you.
You did that.
It's on you.
Your conscious ability to be awake and to be articulate
and to be clued in
and to keep nature at bay and culture straight
and your own malevolence under check
and to combat the unknown
and to transform it into something that's good.
That's what you are.
In my goal, when I was sitting there,
not going to school, being bullied, having no self-esteem.
My goal was the only person that's going to turn this person around is me.
The only way I can turn around is put myself through the worst things possible a human being can ever endure.
And that would be the only way that I can build this brain to handle anything that comes in front of it,
callousing my mind through pain and suffering.
You have an idea.
It's on you and only you to go execute it.
And if it fails, go do it again and go to a different idea.
And it's on you.
If you as talented as you say you are, you as gifted as you say you are,
you should be able to line up with anybody and go out there and win.
So after today, it's on you after today.
Ain't no more excuses after today.
Ain't no more wiggle room after today.
You got to get after it now.
You got to get after it.
You got to get up on your own.
You got to be able to make big decisions on your own.
own. You're going to lose weight on your own. There are a myriad of targets you have to hit by yourself.
If you want your life to turn around, it's your job to do it. If you want to pay off your bills,
it's your job to do it. If you want to change where you're at in life, it is your job to change it.
Your algorithm is exposing you. My algorithm is trading cards, comic books, the New York Jets,
Sunshine, Rabos, Happy People, Random Acts of Kindness.
If your feet is politicians scaring you all day, that's on you.
Nobody is coming.
Nobody's coming to save you.
Nobody's coming to help you.
Nobody's coming to give you a cheat code.
Nobody's coming to show you a shortcut.
You've got to figure this out on your own.
There are some things in life.
Nobody's going to show up.
It's all on you.
I'm talking about the you versus you obligations.
And while nobody throws you a party,
when you abide by them, no one's going to arrest you when you break them either.
It's on you. It's on you.
You are this person right now. You're the person who's learned from those failures, and you can
choose to be the hero of your own movie right now.
But everything rises and falls on you.
What would you tomorrow want you today to do? Pretty bulletproof, but difficult, right? Very
difficult to do because it gives you pretty much nowhere to hide. It's essentially nowhere to hide
at all. And when you do make bad decisions, it's on you. No one saves us but ourselves. No one can't
and no one may, right? You have to get active in your own rescue, as the Stoics say, as do the Buddhists.
It's your responsibility. It's on you. Blow your own nose, as Epictetus says, right? No one's
coming to save you. There is no magical solution. There's just hard work. It's time and patience.
But most of all, your own effort, focusing on the response, focusing on what's in your control,
remembering that you are mortal, choosing not to rust out, but to wear out. Get to work, get moving.
You can watch videos like this all day. You can read all the books in the world. But at some
point, you've got to put it down, you've got to get up from the computer, and you've got to go to work.
Do what you know you have to do.
That's how you get better.
That's how you improve.
If you've decided I got f***,
well then the game's over anyway.
The fuck are we doing here?
If you've decided, I can't.
Because I was unlucky.
My mom this, my dad this, my country this,
my gender that, my income level this.
Well, then it's over.
It doesn't matter what I think,
you think, anyone else thinks, it's over.
I just refuse to talk to another human being
and believe that to be true
because there's been billions of examples of the alternative.
And one of the things I love about writing
or just being a creative person
is that like it's on you.
So it's just, you know, I've got an idea.
I want to go do it.
I've got to kind of like set a pathway
of how I'm going to create this thing
that I have a notion that I want to to execute
and bring it to the world.
You either put yourself in a position
to deserve it, to be around people
that want to help to take care of you.
Luck came by.
You were able to capitalize on it
because like we talked to,
about earlier looks like a bus another one's coming but will you have the fare to get on and
maybe that's it maybe you just got really lucky but you had the fare to get on the bus and that's on
you so you should be very proud of the things that you have in your life so long story short what
I realized was no one was here to help me and the feeling I had every morning I started shaving
my head when I was 16 years old and the feeling I had every morning I looked in the mirror
was horrible.
And I didn't want to feel like that anymore.
And how I felt was a kid going nowhere,
a kid that was scared.
And most kids will accept that and look for help.
But the best thing that happened to me,
no one helped me.
No one felt sorry for me.
No one looked at me and said,
like this day and age,
they'll take you in and they'll tell you by,
stop picking on this person.
Back then, they didn't care.
I had wasted way too much time,
blaming Chris,
or thinking life,
was unfair and it was unfair or beating myself up about the stupid decisions that we had both made,
feeling shitty about myself because I couldn't get out of bed or I knew I was isolating. I was
letting my health go. I was drinking too much. Like I was in that self-sabotaging loop for years.
And then finally it's like, okay, and, and, okay, you can continue to lay in bed and
and rot away, you can continue to beat the shit out of yourself.
You can continue to tell yourself that it's too late, screwed up, you're never going to get out of debt,
you're never going to figure this out.
You're 41, your career is over.
You're going to have to get rid of this.
You can do all that, Mel.
Or you can change.
Like, if you want things in your life to get better, prove it.
And the person you're proving it to is yourself.
I have one of my self-reliance is at the top of my value system.
And I don't think it is contradictory to faith.
I actually think that free will and fate, again, are here.
As a believer, I believe that it's all been written at the same time.
I believe God's going, I need your hands on the wheel, man.
You're steering this, okay?
Don't just rely on fate.
Too many people doing that, man.
I've had my agnostic years where I was not believer at all fully in self-reliant.
It's on me, everything.
And I think it was such a valuable few years because I did need to call myself on some shit.
I did need to say the buck stops here with you, O'Connor.
I did need to quit becoming such a repeat offender.
You know, I was sinning, which means to miss the money.
mark, we just have bad aim, literally, when it comes from an archery term, to sin means to miss
the mark. When you think about it like that, it becomes more practical, especially for agnostics
and stuff. I was missing the mark, and it was time for me. I didn't want to keep forgiving myself
on Sunday. And then repeat and do the same shit again Monday, Tuesday, Friday, and then go,
now I can be forgiven. I was like, no, man. Forgive me, Father, I know what I'm doing, and I'm
Keep doing it.
Cut the shit, McConnor, hey?
Quit giving yourself that out, that parachute.
Even though you may have it,
even though word says grace of God will forgive you.
Yeah, you need a, I need to strong arm myself.
Put my damn hands on the wheel.
Look in the mirror and go, it's on you.
Because it is.
