Starting point is 00:00:00 Sans Pants Radio. When you look generic, you look like a lot of people. Hello and welcome to Chapter 8 of Jaren's Outpost Rumble, a D&D is for nerds adventure. Prior to this... Clara being while standing over somewhere going... She rolls her eyes. More like Lady Lame. Unaffected by the spectres, because the sabres are dealing with them, the town guard take on both the orcs and the undead on their own
Starting point is 00:00:29 and hold their own. Yeah! You go low, stabbing him in the belly, looking him dead in the eyes. He turns from Clara to look at you, surprised, and you begin to just work your stinger all around in his gut. So far, the orcs have been about as useful as my eyes in this fight. We're going to go lows this time.
Starting point is 00:00:50 You guessed right. You want to keep it? Yes. You guessed right. You grab his helmet, pop it open, and then jam bees into his face. What the hell are bees? Why is this shot? Fuck you, Parawickle.
Starting point is 00:01:04 Am I in its belly or its gullet? You're in its neck. Slowly being swallowed. Good. As this is happening, tree token. Grow a tree out of the dragon's yoke. It was a mighty oak, not a pissy little pine tree. Dead.
Starting point is 00:01:23 Dead. Oh, my God. Parry. That, my God. Harry. That's so sad. The dragon's neck explodes in all directions. Its head hits the ground. Its body hits the ground. In its place, a giant blood red tree stands.
Starting point is 00:01:42 A rock. You're dead. stands. O'Rourke, you're dead. So, uh, Clara or Evelyn, no chance of that being healed. Clara turns around,
Starting point is 00:01:53 starts vomiting. Evelyn grabs her and drags her to the gore, which she has been covered in, which you, Leo, have been covered in. Pierce, you're fine is my shadow back no why would it be back i don't know i am so satisfied oh clara and evelyn begin collecting your bits and clara turns around and says if if if we're fast enough, I can maybe save him.
Starting point is 00:02:30 All right. What needs to be done? We need to get all these bits. Don't forget my dick. It's average. It's not my great business A rousing cheer begins to go up among everyone here Periwinkle, periwinkle, periwinkle Man, this is so touching
Starting point is 00:03:01 Your bits are collected. A stretcher is brought out. They're put onto the stretcher and a tarp is thrown over them for posterity's sake. Not posterity. For decency. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Decency and dignity's sake. And people fight to be a pallbearer.
Starting point is 00:03:21 Hey. All right, then. You're led away with Clara still like I don't know any of this. No, you are. No, you're somewhere else entirely. You're communing with Lady Willow.
Starting point is 00:03:35 Yeah, that's pretty impressive. You're sitting in a, like underneath a red tree in a white void. Is there anything about the tree that... Or is it a different tree? Yeah, a gentle-looking fair maiden sits next to you. She's tending, or like lying down,
Starting point is 00:03:56 but feeding a sugar cube to a white horse. And you see a sword at her side. You'd be the... I died, didn't I? She nods. Yeah, buddy. Would you like to go back, she says.
Starting point is 00:04:11 Is that an option? Your friends wish you to come back. Well, if that's an option, I'll... Your friends will make it an option, I assume. I'll take it. She nods. All right. Would you like to stay here for now?
Starting point is 00:04:27 Yeah, I'll rest until I get dragged back, I suppose. Why am I so calm? Feel free to sleep. She turns back to the horse. Okay, I'll just lie down for a bit. You feel very comfortable. Yeah. Finally rest.
Starting point is 00:04:43 I can rest. My watch is over. It isn't, but all right. For now. You close your eyes. While Periwinkle naps in the afterlife, his remains are brought back to the small chapel in White Fort, the place where the Sabres were. Clara is displeased by this, but goes along with it. She casts a spell over the remains.
Starting point is 00:05:11 We have to wait a day. I can bring them back. It will cost a lot, though. Like what? Like money-wise? No. No. I will require a great sacrifice from someone.
Starting point is 00:05:28 Evelyn stands before the She's growing on me I say bags not the moment it comes up Evelyn stands before the stone slab, takes a knee, draws a sword and lays it before her She says, take whatever you need What do you need from us? Clara says, what sacrifice I require is something dear. I don't know what will be taken, but it will have a heavy toll on you, Evelyn. Evelyn nods and says, I am ready.
Starting point is 00:05:58 Clara says, well, you can get up. I need to do it tomorrow. Would it be easier if it was spread out over a few of us? No, I don't have... I've used too much magic today. I'm casting a low-level spell to preserve the corpse and allow me to cast the spell I require tomorrow. I think what Leo meant is the sacrifice.
Starting point is 00:06:18 Could you spread that out over several people, make it not as bad? No. I'm not offering myself. I'm just clarifying. The sacrifice must be painful for someone. Yeah, right. Okay.
Starting point is 00:06:29 Well. I don't know what will be taken. It could be something as, well, mundane, perhaps, I should say, as your sight, or something as complex as your childhood. Whoa. Imagine that. Just as your childhood. Whoa. Imagine that. Just take your childhood away. What do you remember?
Starting point is 00:06:50 Oh, just I'm 20. I was 20 and then it's now. It could be a great many different things. What? Evelyn nods and says, I'm ready for this. Evelyn, you barely know the man. I swore an oath. I'm his friend. I'm going to barely know the man. I swore an oath. I'm his friend.
Starting point is 00:07:08 I'm going to go to the cape. As you try to move away, Evelyn, still gazing at Leo, puts her hand down and stops you. You're going nowhere. All right. You wait right here. I'll get my shadow back eventually, tell you what. Why did you even come back with us, she says. I don't know, was it the crowd was going?
Starting point is 00:07:31 I think you would have. I'm trying to leave now, but she won't let me. Don't you have mixed messages? No, Adam is asking, why did you even go with them? I probably wouldn't have, to be honest. All right, well. Cool, I'm at the keep. All right, you begin the. I'm at the keep. All right.
Starting point is 00:07:47 You begin the long search for your shadow. Let's say your soul. You already got that. Also, you are not doing soul searching. That's not the Pierce way. If you find your shadow, you will have come out of this
Starting point is 00:07:58 missing really only an eye and a lung. I'm back to square one. Pretty good. It's good. Sure. Square one. Greg Pierce hit par's good. Sure, square one. Greg piss hit par and that's all he needs. Are you going to put your shadow back on?
Starting point is 00:08:09 I'll figure out a way. Just do the Peter Pan, like sew it to your ankles. Oh, fuck. I don't even want to consider that. Okay, so are you going to like talk her down or stare her down? Because Evelyn is not backing down. I'll talk her down and be like, Evelyn, you swore an oath,
Starting point is 00:08:27 but this town needs you more than it probably needs me. She looks you over and says, perhaps I misjudged you, little one. Most people do. All right. She gets up. A day passes. In that time, Pierce. Oi.
Starting point is 00:08:43 In among the looting of the castle, which goggles largely supervises. So, like, looting is in... Well, stuff is stolen, but... Acquiring for the town guard. Procuring. A lot of it will find its way back to the town guard or people who need it.
Starting point is 00:09:03 Cool. And corpse disposal. You find in the dungeons where the other shadows were kept No, the people were kept you find your shadow. Right. It's chained to a wall. It looks up at you.
Starting point is 00:09:17 Oi. This is a fucking to-do we found ourselves in. It shrugs. If I pop you out, do you know how to get back on me? It shrugs. Fuck. Well, I'll crack you out and we'll saw you out at the pub, yeah? Thumbs up.
Starting point is 00:09:32 I like now that Greg Piss's shadow can act independently of Greg Piss. I'll crack it out. You crack it out. It takes a while, but eventually your shadow is free. Sick. Well. It walks on the floor next to you. Or on walls as it needs.
Starting point is 00:09:50 We'll head to the pub and figure out what our next move is. All right. Piercing his shadow. The next day, Leo, Pierce, and everyone else in and around Jaren's outpost wakes to a new day, a new dawn as just as battle reconvenes somewhere far
Starting point is 00:10:14 far away. Battle? Yes. We stopped it, Ad. I'm pretty sure when I climbed into that dude's mouth, that was the end of the battle. That was it. That was the end of the battle. That was it for battles, right? He died because I put a tree in him.
Starting point is 00:10:30 Yeah. I'm not getting another escapade. A different battle. Another battle. O'Rourke, you're in an army larger than you have ever seen. Maybe more than a hundred million deep. You didn't know that a hundred? Yeah, Pembrinkle doesn't get out much.
Starting point is 00:10:50 You didn't know that there were that many people, period. Yeah, not fair. Fair. I don't like people, so, you know. A hundred million is a number you can barely comprehend. You're shoulder to shoulder and you can hear the distant sounds of combat. comprehend. You're shoulder to shoulder and you can hear the distant sounds of combat. Everyone standing among you looks to be some sort of, some man or lady
Starting point is 00:11:11 of nobility. They're all knights or paladins or clerics or... Yeah, I feel out of place here. I'm just a brawler from the streets. Men of honour and great fortitude and courage. I've got honor. I don't have a title. He's got soul, but you're not a soldier. Oh, man.
Starting point is 00:11:33 Yes, killer skull back. Good. You're scared, disorientated. You don't know what's happening. And then you hear a gentle but firm voice calling out, not just to you, but to everyone. But you feel it resonating within your very being. Have heart. Keep fighting.
Starting point is 00:11:55 Push. Push. You turn around and larger than life, far larger than you could imagine, is Lady Willow. Oh, definitely dead. You have seen in still dead you've seen interpretations of her in uh in and among the her paladins back back in jaren's outpost the pictures simply don't do her justice she's a knight astride a white pegasus wielding a lance and you can see that she is ready for combat. She swoops down and a massive outstretched claw, perhaps of a dragon or some other foul beast, tries to swat at her. You have a brief moment of panic or fear despite yourself.
Starting point is 00:12:37 But she deftly dodges the blow and continues onwards. You're in the fight. The good fight. Is this purgatory? This is your afterlife. So I spent my whole life fighting. I died fighting and get to spend eternity fighting. Lucky.
Starting point is 00:13:02 Bring it on. This is like all of Periwinkle's christmases came at once slowly everything begins to speed up around you and you realize everything had been moving in almost slow motion but now the fight continues in earnest and you are among it you remember perhaps some snippets of conversation, things that you'd heard from Chief Priestess Clara and also from the Saber's Commander, Evelyn Plain. Yeah. That Lady Willow is locked in eternal combat for all of eternity with her opposite, a god by the name of Lord Oakflesh. He sounds like a fun guy.
Starting point is 00:13:45 Sick name, though. They fight for the souls of all those who have died in combat, good and evil. Well, that sounds like a cause that I could absolutely get behind. I get to punch things forever, and it's a noble punching. As you fight, you see the souls passing across the battlefield. You struggle to try and capture as many as possible, to send them on their way to heaven,
Starting point is 00:14:13 and your opposites do that for hell. Does it mean I can also... Am I still in bee armour? You're in bee armour, yeah. Is it like holy bee vestments? Probably, yeah. Oh, that's amazing. So I could pop those gauntlets with no repercussions because I'm dead.
Starting point is 00:14:30 No. I was about to ask Adam. So they're fighting and they're sending them what? Ghosts can die. Wait, ghosts can die. So if I die again, do I go to another fight? No, then it's gone. There's nothing after this.
Starting point is 00:14:46 Oh, I just felt so empty inside. So, hang on, he's always fighting. So in the afterlife, it's basically just a second chance. It's not like the end. It's just like, basically, you get an extra go. So he's fighting the opposite army, and this is like... The devil, effectively. If you die in that fight, if you re-die again,
Starting point is 00:15:05 you go as a ghost and you're like, well, I hope my side wins. Yes. Okay. Although the fight, is it harder to kill me, I guess, now that I'm dead? Yes, but they're also stronger. So I can't. Actually, it doesn't really. Oh, no, I don't need the bloody forgoldens.
Starting point is 00:15:23 I've got my sword. Yeah, you're right. I'll got my sword Silver steel is not with you Silver steel, a magical weapon Or like a weapon that has a soul of its own Hang on There's a soul bonded to that sword Hang on, hang on You just took that real blasé
Starting point is 00:15:41 Excuse me? I assume a magic Silver steel had a soul. It's got a soul inside it. I'm pretty sure... Your bee gauntlets also have a magical soul within them,
Starting point is 00:15:51 but they're bonded to you. Silver steel was never your weapon. It was lended to you, but it did not belong to you. So you guys are taking this soul weapon thing real, real easily. I'm no longer the commander
Starting point is 00:16:03 of the town guard. I'm just a grunt in an eternal war. This is my idea of paradise when you capture a soul it is your duty to set it free to allow it to go where it wants to go typically to heaven but sometimes you capture a soul and you feel a pang of regret as you're like i you can when you touch the when you grab them and drag them away from the other side, you know if they were a good man or a bad man. Or you get an idea. You don't know, but you get an idea.
Starting point is 00:16:31 And sometimes when you grab someone, you're like, you're going to hell, but I've got to save you anyway. Because you're going to hell on my terms. Yes. Any souls I recognise belonging to, say, a magical warlock who could transform into a dragon but is now dead? Kill him again. You cannot find him.
Starting point is 00:16:53 Any short-foot souls? So many souls pass by. It's impossible. Do I know if Greg Pierce got his soul back? I can't remember. You don't know. So can I look for Greg Pierce's soul? Because I assume it's here.
Starting point is 00:17:06 Actually, I forget. Does he know that you got your soul back? I mean, like, probably. Would you have mentioned it? I might have just said in passing. Well, you know then. Unless he died in the combat. Do I know of anyone else? Because I don't know
Starting point is 00:17:21 who survived that fight. So can I look for people, not just Damien Eaton, but can I look for people that I possibly know as friends? You don't recognize anyone as they pass by. Okay. As I let the souls go, can I rub them on the head and pat them on the bottom? Off you go.
Starting point is 00:17:36 Yeah, you give them a little bit of a high five and then the ass slap or whatever. Off you go. Off you go. Back to the pavilion. Another figure dominates in this fight. This figure has no army to speak of, but from just their presence and their appearance,
Starting point is 00:17:53 you can tell they are also a god. Is this oak flesh? No. It's a dwarven knight in heavyset armor. His armor carries no insignia of allegiance or anything like that, And you get this powerful it's hard to describe what neutrality feels like. I've seen future armor. I know what neutrality is.
Starting point is 00:18:15 But he emanates a powerful aura of order and justice. Do I just get hit with this wave of like, I'm fine either way. I'm ambivalent. Kind of. He strides through the fight and you see him adjudicating over it. Okay, so this is a heaven... I'm currently in a cosmic
Starting point is 00:18:35 battle for the souls of the world between a warlord warrior princess queen god woman, a guy whose name is Lord Oakflesh, which is like the devil if he was also a warlord, being adjudicated by a fair but malevolent dwarf. Yes.
Starting point is 00:18:56 Cool. Oh, not malevolent. Okay. Just a fair. Strict but fair. Strict but fair. So like your grade four teacher version of a dwarf. All right.
Starting point is 00:19:04 A high school principal, if you will. A PE teacher. A PE. No, no, no. My PE teachers are garbage. They're firm and honest. No, my PE teachers were just shit. Oh.
Starting point is 00:19:13 So. Yes. Yes. So they're the oak flame. Okay. Now, I'm okay with this. All right. So you've got your gym teacher versing what?
Starting point is 00:19:22 Your lit teacher and your principals adjudicating. Yeah, yeah, bring it on. You're fighting across some hell-blasted landscape, but as the fight continues, you realize you're moving from plane to plane. Sometimes you're underwater and the fight becomes three-dimensional, like how the ants will collect with each other. Yeah, yeah, yeah. That, but a war.
Starting point is 00:19:46 We become like a whole person. Like a Voltron. Like a Voltron. Not like a Voltron. More like a Power Ranger, yeah? Like a Voltron. Not like a Voltron. Like ants, building one sort of figure to take out more ants of another figure.
Starting point is 00:19:59 No, when ants fall in the water, they all collect together because they can- Yeah, and form the vault. And form an antron. So I'm an antron. Yet sucked into hell. Goodbye. Wait, for real? I mean, sometimes you are fighting in hell, so yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:19 Have I made any friends? Just curious. Would you like to? Yes. Of course I would. I'm fighting in a war. Who are your partners? Who are the people who I'm any friends? Just curious. Would you like to? Yes. Of course I would. I'm fighting in a war. Who are your partners? Who are the people who I'm fighting with?
Starting point is 00:20:29 Who's the person that I'm like- Did Thursday die? Is Thursday around? Who's alive? A lot of- A rock-skelling commandos. A lot of my boys died. Maybe you find some-
Starting point is 00:20:38 Saturday. You find Saturday in Among Them. Yay! Saturday. Saturday. Saturday. Saturday. So we're just- You and Saturday. Saturday. Saturday. So we're just.
Starting point is 00:20:47 You and Saturday like clasp arms as old comrades. It's a shame I have to see you here, but at least we're here together. We have fought well. We have died well. Let us fight well again. And hopefully we will die well again too. He laughs. Hopefully not.
Starting point is 00:21:03 That's the. Did you know? That's the end. You only get one extra chance. Wait, what? Maybe that's how you find out. Maybe up until then you're
Starting point is 00:21:16 like, sick, I'm invincible. This is Valhalla, right? These wallets have been burning at me. It's like, I haven't stopped popping them. Bang, bang, bang. Oh, I need to lie down. So I'm just fighting for days over different lands. Do we have any, is there any rests?
Starting point is 00:21:32 Is there any, do I ever talk to any, like this lady with a shake my hand or anything? In Among the Combat, you learn that once a year or once a cosmic or a year based on the material world, Sir Blakewood, the Dwarven Knight, will call for a temporary truce and for but one day you may relax. Does that mean I can go home? Like Halloween it? Like ghost periwinkle? No.
Starting point is 00:22:02 You're a ghost. You don't know how to return to the material world Nah, fair And I probably wouldn't have learnt that in my time as a lion Speaking of the material world We're trying Material world Speaking of the material world
Starting point is 00:22:13 A thousand years pass for you In the time it takes for you two to wake up A thousand years and you had one evening. Yes. I spent it drinking. I might have spent it worrying. Maybe waking up every moment and going to Clara and be like, so what's going to happen?
Starting point is 00:22:36 Is this going to be cool? O'Rourke's body has been taken and interred at Fort White. I want to ask a lot of questions. If a grade school would ask the questions of a priest, it'd be like, so what happens? Who are you asking? Clara? She's the one that said she would be performing the ritual. Yes.
Starting point is 00:22:51 So what's going to happen? You said you might lose childhood. What does that mean? The way... This spell is complicated at the best of times. So what will happen is we'll gather. I'll perform the relevant rituals and then you will profit yourself as um the person who's paying the price a price to bring someone back from the dead
Starting point is 00:23:14 a price must be paid and it will be terrible i don't know what necessarily will happen yeah with the human pantheon it often depends on the god that you are asking. Okay. So, one god might ask for a different thing. With the human pantheon, it varies from god to god. Some gods, such as gnomes, will simply accept or decline any offer that you give them. They will judge whether or not it is a worthy exchange. Some other gods, like Pania, will request something from you. A certain, well for example, in Pannia's case, a certain number of days must be sacrificed. Okay, so it just depends.
Starting point is 00:23:57 Okay, so this will probably... You know what I would have gone to, I assume, because I had to swear my allegiance to the sabers. That baptism. While I am sworn will probably... I was there. While I am sworn under the human pantheon, I will have to petition Lady Willow for O'Rourke's soul back. I do not know if she will require something or if
Starting point is 00:24:18 she will ask you to proffer something. Either way, I'm sure it'll become quite apparent in time. Okay, and what happens to the city if it doesn't work? If O'Rourke's gone, who's... Well, O'Rourke named no one to secede him. Secede? Secede. No, I didn't, did I? I just ran into a door. Oh man, I'm a dumb idiot. Named no clear successor, so
Starting point is 00:24:43 I couldn't say I'm not privy to the internal workings of the town militia So are we just going to be Back to square one Back to square one minus Damien Eaton Square one's alright So May I offer my services
Starting point is 00:25:00 As ruler of town How would you like a king with a very big cock? That would inspire the people. They will sing songs of my cock and leadership. I wouldn't say square one. Look at what we've accomplished. The gnomes, they've been evacuated and are safe. Their weapon is gone.
Starting point is 00:25:23 Damien Eaton has been slain. And now the people can... The Their weapon is gone. Damien Eaton has been slain and now the people can... the blood cult is gone. There's a really big pretty tree just in the middle of a field. That's true. There's a pretty tree but the people aren't afraid of the dark anymore. That's true. That's not square one.
Starting point is 00:25:40 Well, that's good. She puts a hand on your... She kneels down because she has to put a hand on your shoulder. She kneels down, puts a hand on your... She kneels down because she has to put a hand. I am a millionaire. To put a hand on your shoulder. She kneels down, puts a hand on your shoulder and says, have faith that we have done something. We did. A thousand men live and die and wonder if they changed the world at any point. You don't have to worry that.
Starting point is 00:26:00 Neither do I, but I'm still fighting, so I don't know. I'm just worried that if we don't, if it fails, the Sabres will eventually probably take reign, which will go up against the church. Look how God will be in the middle. I am in control of the church, and I can tell you here and now that the Sabres and my delegation, my delegates, my flock i'm not going to clash where we worship different gods but we follow similar enough beliefs you don't know if you 100 believe what she says there
Starting point is 00:26:36 but you feel like she's a person of peace did we just like we solved so we we just solved religious wars. Great. Go, Tame. I am the Messiah. We wait a few more days, Adam. Maybe two. See if he comes back. On the third one.
Starting point is 00:26:56 That's what we want. If you wait three more days, that's like another 4,000 years. The longer we wait, the harder the spell becomes, Clarence. No, no, but we put him behind a cave. Big Rock? Big Rock is there. Big Rock? Yeah. Comes back, goes back to heaven.
Starting point is 00:27:09 He's like, what the fuck? Ah, Elf Jesus. Jesus of Nara, Elf. Yes, I remember that tale. But I understand that we're back to, you know, we're better than square one. Like the majority evil is gone. But I just, I'm worried that if it doesn't work, then, I mean, yeah, you're saying now that the Sabres and you guys would be fine, but I don't know that.
Starting point is 00:27:38 You don't know that. And then the Little Lows, I mean, sure, the Shawfoots are in jail, but they killed Papa Little Low. Quiet Knives are dead. Quiet Knives leader is dead. Quiet Knives crumble, I'm sure. Their elf doctor and leader are gone. What a classic Greg Pierce.
Starting point is 00:27:59 That's tomorrow's problem. Absolutely. Absolutely. And so right now the Sabres seem fine, but you saw them just for the last week. They were militant. Crazy. I just hope we don't fail. You see a long road ahead of us.
Starting point is 00:28:19 I see the same road, but I see a long road behind us. We've come this far. I want to put that on a fridge magnet. That's good. That's some good stuff. Most of your damn life bike. I kind of nod and be like, okay. And have a sneaky
Starting point is 00:28:35 smoke. But like, not like, you know, trying to hide it this time. Out in the open, proud, because this is a relaxing one. That's character development. I was just about to say. We did it! This campaign began with the character assertion, can a man smoke for comfort and in public?
Starting point is 00:28:57 And I feel like we've answered that. D&D's for nerds, proudly advocating comfort smoking. This is the first smoke that I have had where someone isn't actively trying to kill me. And fuck is it a good one. Oh, man, that is good. Big ups for you, Leo. All right. So would you like to go to Castle White?
Starting point is 00:29:19 So when's it all happening? As soon as possible, as Clara says. All right. Yeah, we'll head to Castle White. What are you doing, Piss? Would you like to come? There's going to be like a big ceremony. Everyone knows what's happening in the city. Everyone knows what's happened
Starting point is 00:29:34 and what's happening. You actually, you know, maybe you, in the, after festivities you're going from tavern to tavern, and you hear a lot of people telling a lot of tales about what happened. There's's a like the last fight everyone was there well a lot of people were there for so everyone knows that a rock saved the city everyone's cheersing to his name but there's a lot of like in the lead-up to that a lot of the events that you were kind of heavily involved in there's
Starting point is 00:30:00 a lot of people being like oh yeah and then this happened in the vault, and you're like, no, they locked me in the vault. After you tried to betray us. Am I painted as a hero or a villain by the people, Adam? People say about you what they've always said about you, Greg Pierce. Nothing's changed for you. Oh, that's fine, then. That's what I was looking for You're actually a head
Starting point is 00:30:26 Yeah if anything Do you have any debts? No I don't know if killing all the people Who you owe money counts as coming out clean No debts Exactly kill the head of the quiet knives They'll do four they're not going to come back for that Not at all
Starting point is 00:30:42 So I know the resurrection ceremony is planned. Yes. It's tomorrow evening. Oh, well. I might swing by if it's on the way. All right. Yeah. What feels like the entire town has turned out for this.
Starting point is 00:30:56 The streets are lined with people. It's so thick that just normal business has to shut down past 6 p.m. Everyone or like there's a lot of people, I should say, with candles, lit candles, approaching Fort White. They stop at the walls to the fort. They don't actually go in. You could try to get in, though, if you wanted to. Hmm.
Starting point is 00:31:19 Nah. I'm good. You may be, though. You're just going to wait outside. Yeah. Well, I'm assuming That I'll find out One way or the other I feel like by the end
Starting point is 00:31:28 We weren't out Like you know It's not the kind of thing Where we came out of it like We did it Robasty's for us We fought alongside One another
Starting point is 00:31:36 In an uneasy alliance Yeah I did try to kill you When you were where at though Frankly I'm happy To just wait and see But you didn't kill him. No, true.
Starting point is 00:31:47 I feel like that's something that Greg Pierce basically should have said. No. That's a classic Greg Pierce thing. That's true. Maybe I'll go inside. We were best of friends.
Starting point is 00:32:02 Oh, I didn't see what's happening. I'll have a sticky bake. As you're approaching, you see a procession. The procession has Chief Priestess Clara. It has Leo in it, Gragya, O'Rourke's kids, Buttons and Sweatrock. Yes. Maybe Grook Grook as well. She's good.
Starting point is 00:32:23 Ian would be there, I assume. Yeah, nearly the entire week is there. Except for the days that are with me. Yes. Except for the days that are with you, the entire week is there. Poor Grook Grook. No, Grook Grook should, you know, watch her son die before she does. It's hard when a Grook Grook happens.
Starting point is 00:32:43 Well, to be honest, for half-orcs, it's pretty common. Grookrook and Gragir are both wearing black shawls and drapes, and you can hear soft weeping from Grookrook. Oh, man. Are they just, like, walking amongst the crowd? No, people are parting to allow them through. I'll just part. I don't want to join the process or anything.
Starting point is 00:33:03 They're bringing a coffin with them. Their little family, like, they're in my honour as well? I was made part of the family. Not in the procession. Probably not. There's a bunch of members of the town guard, though. Anyone that you knew has turned up for this ceremony.
Starting point is 00:33:20 I'd nod my head to Leo as he passes, but I won't join the procession. You probably weren't invited to be honest. I wasn't invited and also, like, I just don't want to Leo as he passes, but I won't join the procession. You probably weren't invited to be honest. That's not a respect thing, and I wasn't invited, and also, like, I just don't want to be on display. All right, cool. They get to the... You got your shadows, though.
Starting point is 00:33:33 Yeah, yeah. That's pretty good. My shadow's here, plus that's a bit weird. If I join and my shadow joins behind me. Your shadow skulks behind you. Because it's a 3D thing now, it tries to remain hidden. It's probably a good thing which isn't that hard for it it's night oh that's true and um so with the whole day basically so
Starting point is 00:33:52 what's happened during the whole day what did you want to do no one's well no one that you knew there's celebrations throughout the city but no one you knew was celebrating because no one you knew didn't also feel distraught at O'Rourke's passing. Yeah, and everyone I'd know is kind of gone. My death was badass, alright? You could chill with Little Little. Nah, he thinks, I don't know.
Starting point is 00:34:16 I feel that relationship is tense! You could go down to the city jail or whatever, chill with the Surefoots. You know them as well, they're not partying. That's true. I assume you just spend your day in the keep. Not the keep, the... How...
Starting point is 00:34:31 I mean, Gragio and Rook Rook would have happily allowed you in their home. Maybe I'll learn a little bit more about Perry's life and what kind of a man he was. Like, is this guy worth it? He's not a man. You don't know orcish customs. They do not talk about an orc.
Starting point is 00:34:47 Not really. They're in grieving, but they don't. Like, if you ask questions, maybe Grookrook at some point gives you like a don't. All right, I'll respect their customs. How risky? What is Leo thinking is going to happen? Like, does he think, whatever. As it's getting closer to this resurrection thing
Starting point is 00:35:06 You're like Was this a mistake? Am I going to lose a leg? Am I going to lose my mind? Am I going to die? Maybe you spend like Alright dear flip sham No no that was
Starting point is 00:35:18 Imagine if I just killed you Dear flip sham And then I didn't come back either I just turned around in like my 4000 year battle And I'm like oh no Kara was in charge of the blood cult the entire time And Greg kisses a coroner TPK
Starting point is 00:35:31 We're probably all going to get through this one And then I'm just like Lord Oakflesh wins Which means that you guys get sucked in the Lord Oakflesh gets your souls Which is very funny Tom never came back to participate in a D&D Adventure again because it was bleak and upset
Starting point is 00:35:53 We disbanded D&D As finesse Last episode folks Adam snapped Oakflesh comes through the void And crushes the earth campaigns are over thanks for listening, I hope you had a good time
Starting point is 00:36:10 if only remember Kripom, that was good I will remember you will you remember me anyway at the gates to Fort... oh sorry, still having second thoughts Remember me Don't let you Anyway At the gates to Fort Oh sorry
Starting point is 00:36:26 Still having second thoughts Yeah go on No second thoughts It's like How Like would he be Like is it Cause it's like
Starting point is 00:36:33 Okay whatever It's the thing I'm not gonna come back Fucked up Maybe Oh no Is it something That you're like
Starting point is 00:36:39 Alright I'm just gonna Like make sure My things are in order In case things go awry I mean maybe yeah You might wanna write A living will, yeah? Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:46 Like, Clara probably would have braced you for the very real possibility that you would have to give your life for O'Rourke's life. Many gods do basically ask for that, especially gods of law or neutrality. They ask for a sacrifice. Like for like swap.
Starting point is 00:37:02 Yeah. Well, then I spend this sort of day, maybe I drop by Gragir and see the kids. And maybe I just go like a tour around. A tour around Jaron's outpost. Go back to Little Tegelai, seeing how fucked up it is. Oh, man, it's all destruction. It's not even bittersweet.
Starting point is 00:37:22 It's all just bitter. Post-World War II is what I would describe Little teagle eyes the blitz can i get a coffee somewhere probably not but yeah no no one's serving coffee damn damn could add some half-oak coffee in my place, but you left. Half-orc coffee is just beer. And? It's like beer with ground-up caffeine. And not like actually ground-up, just crushed beans in the hands of an orc. You've got to do it by hand. Otherwise, it's not orcish coffee. This is good.
Starting point is 00:37:58 The hand sweat makes it juicy. Better than dwarvish coffee, I suppose, which is just beer. And dirt for the brown bits, like, floating in it? No, it's just... You're thinking of dwarven scotch. I'm going to say goblin coffee, which is just dirt. Is that called a goffy? A goblin coffee?
Starting point is 00:38:21 A goffy. You call it a goffy. Can I have a small goffy to go? That does sound dirty, though. Yeah, I'll go around the Jaren's Outpost to kind of like, yeah, see how it's all going. Kind of like maybe go to the docks and be like, yeah. A potential one-loss tour.
Starting point is 00:38:37 The docks are still kind of an issue because the Orcish tribe hasn't properly been expelled yet. Ah, I thought we got them. Ah, then I don't go near the docks. They've been broken, but they're still... Well, it's kind of like... It's like the quiet knife situation. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:38:49 They've lost their leader. They're a rudderless ship, but they still exist. You wouldn't see the horrors of Jaren's outpost and be like, we need a leader. Fuck, this place is still fucked. The docks are still largely a no-go zone, but they're a no-go zone because people are just like, best not.
Starting point is 00:39:04 Not because they're like, orcs might attack us. Okay. The orcs do look properly crippled. Oh, that's good. I'm going to be sending like a little silent goodbye to good old Meat Pie. Rest in peace, Meat Pie. Write a letter to Flip Sham. Write several letters to Flip Sham, scrunch them all up,
Starting point is 00:39:21 realize I can't say anything good because I'm bad with words and just don't, and then head to the procession. Cool. All right. Okay. Grizzly. At the gates to Fort White, you're met by Paladin Commander Plain and a bunch of her higher commanders.
Starting point is 00:39:38 She nods dutifully to Clara, who nods dutifully back, and the procession passes by. They step aside so that the procession can pass them by. But Plane stops you, Leo. She kneels down, looks you eye to eye, and says last chance. I could take your place. You could.
Starting point is 00:39:59 You should be a much better fighter in the 2,000 year battle I'm currently still in. I'm amazing at fighting, alright? just because I'm small. You fuck. Actually, you weren't really the only one to survive that gun attack. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:40:16 Look, yeah, you could, but if things fuck up, this town needs a leader and you're in a better position than anyone else here. So what happens if the worst thing happens? What happens if a rock doesn't come back? And the person that goes and offers that dies, gets maimed, loses their mind, anything. What happens then when you are no longer leading the Sabres? What happens then, Plain? I remember when you first came here
Starting point is 00:40:51 and we discussed with O'Rourke about converting. Super happy about that, wasn't I? And you told me that I was presenting you with a lose-lose situation. Yes. Do you remember that? Yes. She pats you once again on the shoulder shoulder gets up and turns around and walks away fair in fort white there is a small chapel as as you progress through towards the chapel people start breaking off because there's only so many people can fit in
Starting point is 00:41:20 the chapel itself so it becomes like it goes from friends and associates to friends to close friends to basically just family and people who need to be there when you get to the chapel itself. So that's why piss isn't in the chapel. Piss didn't make it past the fort wall. I watched the procession
Starting point is 00:41:40 go by. You can try to stay with them if you want. I'll stay with them until I can't anymore. Alright, probably... I just didn't want to join the procession. That's cool. It's not my place. You get within the walls of Fort White where a bunch of the
Starting point is 00:41:56 town guard that didn't really know O'Rourke but just members of the town guard are. As you approach the doors to the fort itself, a paladin holds up a gauntleted hand and says, that's far enough. Yeah, look, fair enough. That's far enough.
Starting point is 00:42:10 Pissed. Understood. Well, I'll find out, right, though, while I'm here, if I'm out on the outside. An announcement will be made. All right. Can I go back into the crowd and start taking odds? Greg pissed to the very end.
Starting point is 00:42:32 What side do you take? All right. Well, I know Leo's doing a swap, right? Do I? I don't know. I don't think you actually have had a chance to discuss it. Oh, yeah. You went and got your shadow back, I think.
Starting point is 00:42:46 Yeah, I did. Right. You've been boning it all night. You know there's a resurrection. You just don't know how it's going to happen. Who's getting resurrected? Well, dead is dead. You frankly don't even know what sacrifice needs to be made.
Starting point is 00:42:58 I probably think it's pretty. He's a high-level cleric. Can I take both bets? That is the definition of always bet on picks Is betting both I bet both Alright you try to go both ways or whatever We'll see how that works out for you
Starting point is 00:43:14 You should be being like What's going on? It's irrelevant he's going to end up owing money Surely I'll be net zero Do you not know how odds work? You're going to give the wrong odds I'll end up owing money. Surely I'll be net zero. Different odds. Do you not know how odds work? You're going to give the wrong odds.
Starting point is 00:43:29 You're just giving the wrong odds. But then the money I lose there, I make back on the odds that I got right. No, no, because the odds that you got right were less than the debt that you owe for the money that you... You gave odds wrong in both directions and too many people are going to bet on the right outcome. That's fair. I'll cop it. Yep, you just will, yeah Correct You are not a statistician Nor are you a cleric
Starting point is 00:43:53 You do not know what a fair odds for this are 100 to 1? That's why you're so much dead Is because you're a terrible gambler Because of luck, you just suck at it Truly Greg Pierce You are reverting to square one.
Starting point is 00:44:08 You will finish this campaign in the exact same position that you started it, and thus the cycle of Pierce continues. It's an Aurora Borapiss. You'd get bored otherwise, surely. Oh, absolutely.
Starting point is 00:44:24 Greg Pierce can't let... sitting in the tavern with my shadow i imagine i'm like right the shadow being like but up but up on the table like well probably should get gambling yeah shadow gives me like a nod but yeah i'll tell you what happens as well maybe you give decent odds but whenever you give a ticket slip to someone, your shadow, thinking it's doing a good job, picks their pocket, changes the odds and slips it back in. But he changes it just fucked in the wrong way. I'll give him a thumbs up. Assume he knows what he's doing. He gives you a thumbs up back.
Starting point is 00:44:56 He does not. I thought you just assumed your shadow would know how to do odds. Ace may. Yeah. But you don't know how to do odds. Or a bore of piss. Or a bore of piss. Or a bore of piss. Oh, boy.
Starting point is 00:45:15 Maybe the shadow was the one doing the gambling all along. And that's what got him in the first place. I like that. So, shadow, we're here. Everything's squared away. We're just going to have a lovely relaxing night at the pub. Shadow just like spells out something. How about gambling?
Starting point is 00:45:31 Oh, it's been a while since we've had a flutter. You're right. It's a good point you bring. All right. Let's do that. I want to see if I can not pay for these beers. For an hour, Clara is moving about the chapel, splashing holy water on the floor. She burns a fig leaf over O'Rourke's body.
Starting point is 00:45:51 And you hear her the entire time muttering under her breath. You try to catch what she's saying. And you get snippets of the prayer. It sounds like a chant. Okay, okay. O'Willow, bring our Lady O'Willow. Fair is fair. Bring our beloved back to us lady o'rourke uh strong and bold lady o'rourke lady sorry lady willow i uh freddy and dick there sorry lady lady willow fair and strong return our champion once more lines like that
Starting point is 00:46:30 over and over again finally at the end of the hour after she's burnt the burnt the fig leaf splashed holy water around she's maybe like gathered collected some of o'Rourke's personal items and laid them about him. And then she places a hand over O'Rourke's eyes and over O'Rourke's heart, and she begins to name deeds that he did in life. She says where he was born, where he grew up, when he joined the town guard, when he married, when his first child was born, when his second child was born, just any deed that she can conjure forth. And she's probably, well, maybe not you, Leo,
Starting point is 00:47:14 because you didn't know O'Rourke for very long, but she certainly asked O'Rourke's family any deeds that they could mention. And she maybe said that you need to, as part of the spell is you just need to specify the person and their deeds. So the gods know who you're talking about. Just say big bloke bee armor. Off you go. We did this in the docks. We did this.
Starting point is 00:47:38 And then you put a tree in a dragon's mouth. Clara gives a bit of a stylized stint to it as well. It sounds a bit rose tinted to you, Leo. Fair enough. It's touching, though. It wasn't like that. He punched a guy in the throat so he could punch another guy in the throat. I saw him clean through six people at the docks once.
Starting point is 00:47:59 A dwarf got in the way and the dwarf got caught. I mean, that wasn't great but like it wasn't bad necessarily i'm just shades of gray i mean you're fucking it is nonetheless touching you can tell that it comes from a place of love from clara and a place of love deep love and understanding from o'rourke's family that's right i embrace it those people i'm wearing those glasses it's fine yeah he was noble clara makes eye contact with you, Leo Leo, step forward I step forward
Starting point is 00:48:29 Kneel before the altar, please I'm like, I kneel Oh yeah, that might not Kneel before the altar Lady Willow Periwinkle O'Rourke was taken before his time We offer this sacrifice Please Bring him back to us I'm like, under my breath Winkle O'Rourke was taken before his time. We offer this sacrifice. Please, bring him
Starting point is 00:48:46 back to us. I'm like, under my breath. Leo, everything goes dark. You're in a blank, empty void. Uh-oh. Oh, no.
Starting point is 00:49:01 Slowly, the world begins to materialize around you. You get these weird smells. You can hear these strange things. And it's like looking through translucent glass. Everything is just splotches of color at first, like a painting almost. Slowly, your vision begins to focus in and you slowly understand what's happening. You are
Starting point is 00:49:26 in the middle of a fight. One of the biggest fights you have ever seen. There must be a hundred million bodies just crammed together in this one battlefield.
Starting point is 00:49:42 Welcome to my world, Shadow. So little. You're just going to get stomped. Oh my god. Ah. A shadow passes over you. You look up and see a beautiful woman
Starting point is 00:49:56 in armor, a stride of white pegasus. She glances down at you and you feel awe at her. You can tell that she is singling you out specifically. She says nothing but continues flying across the battlefield and dives down. You hear her clatter among troops. All right.
Starting point is 00:50:17 I got my daggers with me here. You draw your daggers. Cool. Can I start, like, making a beeline towards her? Yeah, sure. You rally. A bunch of troops move with you. They rally towards Lady Willow.
Starting point is 00:50:30 All right. O'Rourke, you feel a tugging. Bullshit. Somewhere just above your solar plexus. You feel this strong, powerful tugging. Do I have an opportunity to turn to Saturday and be like, do you feel this? Saturday says, what? Excuse me? You've kind of got this vague idea that you can hear
Starting point is 00:50:56 Clara's voice. Chief Priestess Clara. She's calling out to you. You can go to her if you want. Saturday, I think I have to go. Saturday turns to you, but you see his eyes don't focus on you. They focus straight through you. You were a ghost, but you were physical to other ghosts. You are slowly, you realize, becoming translucent and transparent to your own ghost senses. And you imagine that Saturday actually can't see you
Starting point is 00:51:30 because he tries to look around and he calls out, O'Rourke, O'Rourke. His voice becomes distant. Clara's become stronger. This is either very good or very bad. Maybe you've just died. Have I just ghost died? No, no.
Starting point is 00:51:45 Am I back? Your chest feels awful. You feel like you've been wrung out and then stretched out. You come back. You're alive. Your heart beats for the first time in what feels like forever. Centrum. Thousands of years. About thousands of years. I don't know. I believe it's the first time in what feels like forever. Centurion. Thousands of years.
Starting point is 00:52:05 About thousands of years. I don't know. I believe it's the last time my heart beat. Time felt strange as a ghost. It feels stranger now that you have the memories as a human. An orc, I should say. You're in the chapel. Am I naked?
Starting point is 00:52:18 No, you've been dressed out. That's good. It's like, oh, come to my resurrection. I had that nightmare. The resurrection dream. No pants. You come back just in time to see the crushing damage that was dealt to you by being trapped in a dragon's throat when a great oak tree appeared.
Starting point is 00:52:35 That is just completely healing over as you come back. I've had worse. Clara is standing there. Your family are all around you. Gragia breaks down next to you. You hear Grook Grook, like, quietly crying, but... She's happy? Well, yeah, happy tears, but to see her crying is, like, kind of a big deal,
Starting point is 00:53:00 which is why she has the shawl over her face. Yeah, fair. I don't look at Grook Grook because it's disrespectful to look at you Grock Grock When she's having emotions Grock Grock doesn't care She throws back her shawl and grabs you She's sobbing into your shoulder I love you too
Starting point is 00:53:12 Just got crushed by a dragon Still be crushed Still be crushed Love you though Love you It hurts It hurts a lot I love you so much
Starting point is 00:53:19 You hear her in between sobs Whisper into your ear Harden up Nah, look fair It's like I just died or anything in between sobs, whisper into your ear, harden up. That looked fair. It's like I just died or anything, but to be honest, that's a fair criticism. I should be taking this much better. Buttons and sweat rock call out almost in unison.
Starting point is 00:53:36 Daddy! Oh, there's my girls. They also crush, you know, the parts of your body. Nothing better than a family crush. Yeah. I'd stand up, I guess. The small chapel. Look around.
Starting point is 00:53:51 The small chapel is filled with everyone who is close to you. Leo is standing near the altar, swaying slightly. His eyes are closed and you can see wisps of smoke coming out of his mouth. A? Smoke monster. Lost. Leo, are you the smoke monster from Lost? Is this the true purgatory, like the island? Do I have to relive all my memories
Starting point is 00:54:13 or something? Leo collapses. Clara, who was checking maybe one of your free arms that your family wasn't crushing, lets go of you and moves over to Leo. She cradles Leo, but she obscures him so you can't see. I try to move my family. What happened?
Starting point is 00:54:31 Why am I back? The last thing I remember was I, wait, did we win? Which days of the week are left? Is Thursday there? Goggles is there, probably. Goggles wanders over and says, we won. We won. And a fine victoryers over and says, we won. We won.
Starting point is 00:54:47 And a fine victory it was. You killed a dragon. I didn't think that was going to work, if I'm completely honest. Where's, who's, how am I? Slowly, what happened is explained to you. Through sobs and through hearty laughs and guffs from your close friends, they explain that you killed Eaton by exploding his neck from the inside. Best plan ever. After Damien Eaton was slain, the town guard, with some assistance from the lightsabers, were able to bring Jaren's outpost kind of to just a little bit more higher level of control than you have had for quite some time now. Organized chaos.
Starting point is 00:55:35 Yes. The organized chaos that Jaren's outpost has thrived on. The docks are still technically under orcish control, but the town guard, because the orcs were broken in the fighting, the town guard are organizing a force to go take back the docks, and it's looking very promising. The blood cult has been all but wiped out with a lot of the high-ranking members captured and naming names.
Starting point is 00:56:01 And we killed the leader. Yes. The stupid blood monster boy that he was. Yes. But you definitely remember that. Oh, I do remember that. Do I know what happened vis-a-vis my resurrection? Yeah, what's going on there?
Starting point is 00:56:15 Why is Leo full of smoke on the ground? Why am I in a battle? What's all that about? Clara picked up Leo's form and moved over to Commander Plane, and they're both looking him over, whispering to themselves. They're, like, kind of in a corner of the room. No one's really paying them any mind. Excuse me, friends and family.
Starting point is 00:56:38 I need to find out what happened to him. And I go over to those two. What's going on? How am I back? She comes with. Okay, fair enough. Just dragging them. Two kids on your legs.
Starting point is 00:56:49 Maybe buttons and sweatpants as well. Like one on each leg. Yeah, yeah. I'm not going to let daddy go again. It was more of the militia. I figured my family are going to follow me everywhere. Goggles on one arm. They nod.
Starting point is 00:56:59 They understand. They let you pass. What happened? How am I back? Clara, who hands Leo's body over to plane turns around and says um uh we resurrected you i'm a i'm a powerful cleric i don't know if you remember i says almost with a edge of like uncharacteristic comedy comedy. It doesn't suit you. Like me, don't do jokes. But how? Why is Leo on the floor?
Starting point is 00:57:33 Plane steps around Clara and with none of Clara's characteristic tact says a sacrifice needed to be made. You remember waking up, I assume, under the command of Lady Willow on her battlefield, yes? I fought that fight for 5,000 years. Well, Leo, I think, took your place. Oh, he's an idiot.
Starting point is 00:57:57 He's going to die. You know you can die when you're dead? I learned that when I got over there. You can die twice. Again, I'm not that incompetent a fighter. Rest in peace. His soul. So many slights, I just feel them.
Starting point is 00:58:10 Clara puts a hand on you, a steadying hand, and says, I think, well, we believe what might have happened is that Leo's soul has been taken to the battlefield and Leo's body has remained behind, but lady willow has put a presence in it uh he's possessed plane shakes her head not exactly i've seen this before he he's what's sometimes referred to as a revenant an undead creature creature brought to exact justice in the world. I could get behind that. I like things that like justice. Plane slowly sets Leo down, and Leo's eyes are open now.
Starting point is 00:58:53 They're blindingly white, and slowly smoke wafts out of his mouth. Cool. He stands up under his own power. You got yourself a damn Terminator, son. Leo? Leo doesn't mouth. Cool. He stands up under his own power. You got yourself a damn Terminator, son. Leo? Leo doesn't respond. Cool. Leo is gone.
Starting point is 00:59:12 This vessel is filled with Lady Willow's presence, Plane says. Vessel of Leo. It is an undead creature that will seek out and destroy evil where it exists. Although I think this one has a specific purpose. I'm going to deputize this revenant. I still am commander of the town guard, I'm pretty sure. Right? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:59:40 Leo's body opens its mouth and it says in a thousand different languages at once. That's upsetting. Cool. Thank you, O'Rourke. I will do justice. Okay, but is there a shade of grey justice? I will do justice. We will allow you to do justice
Starting point is 01:00:05 And I try to look at like Clara Or Plane and be like Just communicate to some We're prepared to kill this thing If it does too much justice Plane shakes her head This is a blessing Good, yeah, good, good
Starting point is 01:00:21 Clara, yeah, yeah Clara shrugs. She seems a bit, like, perturbed at the situation. Clara continues. I believe this might not necessarily be the end of Leo, though. Meaning? Plane continues after Clara. I've seen this before.
Starting point is 01:00:41 So Lady Willow has called forth Leo's soul to fight with her on the battlefield and has turned his body into a revenant a creature of justice in this world so while leo's body is a force of justice in the world and leo's soul is a justice in the afterlife there is once a year a day of rest that all of lady willow's followers observe. Once a year. Big dwarf guy. Yes. I saw him. He's big. Sir Blakewood. He officiates over the fighting. Never learned Goddard's name. He didn't introduce himself. It's Lady Willow, Sir Blakewood and Lord Oak Flesh, she says. With the same tone that
Starting point is 01:01:24 Lex Luthor might say Superman. That's good. One day a year he can come back? One day a year there will be a break from the fighting and perhaps Lady Willow will allow Leo's soul to return to his body. I like those odds. Do we know what day that would be? Can we work that out?
Starting point is 01:01:48 I need to thank him. It's the same day every year. What day? Why, it is Christmas. You mean Gruckmas? Presumably you'll find out on the day it happens. Well, the calendar tends to change. So while it's the same day every year,
Starting point is 01:02:07 sometimes that's different lengths apart. Well, the calendar tends to change. So while it's the same day every year, sometimes that's different lengths apart. Okay. Okay. But we could measure that, know that. Yeah, you can know it ahead of time. I want to sit down and thank him for bringing me back. Why did he bring me back? Why did Leo? Why did all of you? They look at each other. Plane says, I am sworn to serve. Clara says, we need you. The town needs you.
Starting point is 01:02:34 Everyone needs you. And Leo knew that as well. Okay. We both spoke with him, Plane said. And we all agreed that Jaren's outpost needs a solid leader and you are the best person to fill the job i'll try far what do i do now lead an announcement needs to be made that your resurrection was successful i can do that how There's a balcony here. You can wander out onto the balcony.
Starting point is 01:03:07 The town is turned up to see this. I want to turn to Gragia here because I imagine that Periwinkle's good at leading people into battle and stuff, but terrible at public speaking. I'm a little bit nervous. What do I do? As all kings often are. There was a whole film about it.
Starting point is 01:03:24 Yeah, yeah. Gragia says, be yourself. I won't punch anybody, though. Just be honest, she says. All right, I go out onto the balcony. Fuck. But also good. the balcony fuck but also good and applause ripples outwards through all of jaron's outpost people are cheering waving throwing like uh you know throwing their hats into the air in
Starting point is 01:03:57 celebration candles are being waved you notice that a lot of people have candles. They're like, it's a small fire going on across the town. You can see the lines of candles stretching off in all the different streets away from you. It's like every street is lit up as if it were daytime. Spage! Piss is alive? You probably don't hear piss. Come on, Spage. Piss is alive? You probably don't hear piss. Come on, Spage. Come on.
Starting point is 01:04:28 It's just like all these, he keeps putting on different voices. Dragia wanders out next to you and holds up both of her hands for silence. Eventually the crowd dies down and you can be heard. Hi. Hi. For those of you who don't know me, I'm Periwinkle. Oh, boy. Everyone knows who you are.
Starting point is 01:04:55 Oh, yeah. Thanks for coming out here today. This town has been through a lot, more than it should have gone through. But if you'll let me, I want to help us get this town back to being the place that we could be proud of. I've bled for this city. I'm sure some of you out here have bled for this city, and it deserves our, you know, it deserves our love and respect.
Starting point is 01:05:38 Tell them we'll fight well. We're going to fight well. Or we're going to fight well, or we're going to die trying. The crowd erupts into applause. Plane steps out on your other side, puts a hand on your shoulder and says, What are your orders? Orders? How would you like us to proceed we need to fix the damaged areas how bad i assumed that the fight was he walks with you back off the balcony people
Starting point is 01:06:15 are still applauding you can hear it inside it's deafening yeah we need to we need to rebuild the city and um a member of the town guard has taken guard has taken out like a little clay scribe thing and is taking down notes. I guess I'm now the commander of the town? What am I? Well, traditionally, the commander of the town watch has been referred to as the commander of the town watch. But you're also the governor. El presidente. Goggles says,
Starting point is 01:06:50 what do you want to be called? Periwinkle O'Rourke's fine for me. Alright, you're the first periwinkle. First of his name. No, no, my uncle was also a periwinkle. Second of his name. Lord? King? Baron? Periwinkle's just fine. Describe, no, my uncle was also a periwinkle. Second of his name. Lord, king, baron.
Starting point is 01:07:05 Periwinkle's just fine. The scribe looks at Goggles, Goggles nudges him and says, write it down. The scribe writes it down. All right, so I want- The fine periwinkle. Clara and- who's with me? Plain or Clara?
Starting point is 01:07:20 Well, plain, Clara, everyone's with you. Everyone's with me. All right, so we need to basically- Leo's wandering behind you. So Leo will be my deputy because I can keep tabs on him and I want to know when he comes back and we can do justice. The first order, Goggles, you and Ian are now the two highest ranking members of the town guard as captains.
Starting point is 01:07:42 Your first order of business is to- One of you will be to lead the city restoration project and the other one will be to ensure that those stinking sure-foots stand trial for their crimes against this city and my family and your family. Understood. We'll have to assemble like a judiciary
Starting point is 01:07:58 for that. We've got one. We've never had one of those. Plain can lead the judiciary. Plain nods. She's harsh but fair. I'm a fair judge. Yeah. Clara, you can be part of the city restoration project. I know you care about this city and you want to see it rebuilt
Starting point is 01:08:11 and the people protected. So you're that arm of the government. Clara nods. Thank you. I do love this city. I think that's it. I think we just need to get to work. It's going to be a long, long journey back, but we'll get there.
Starting point is 01:08:32 Greg Pearce, it becomes quickly apparent as people come to you with their little ticket stubs that for some reason you gave a lot different odds than you frankly remember giving, and now you're in a lot of problems. I'm at the front of the guard house, like the wall, yeah? The fort wait. How high is the wall? It'd be 20 feet.
Starting point is 01:08:54 Do you reckon if I got a boost from my shadow, I could get over? No, probably not. Oh, you could try. Yeah, all right, let's give that a go. Give me a boost. This is your fault. What did you do? Your shadow, as he gives you a shove up, you whisper back,
Starting point is 01:09:11 what did you do? Your shadow just shrugs. You managed to climb onto the other side of the- Can I hoist my shadow with my hand? Oh, your shadow just walks through. Oh, right, yeah, right. On the other side, there's a bunch of paladins
Starting point is 01:09:28 from the White Sabers here, but none of them pay you too much money. I put my hands in my pockets and start walking and be like, crowds get Nancy. Oh, boy. Alright, Greg Pierce. You escape for now. Scarpa.
Starting point is 01:09:47 Scarpa into the city. Scarpa. And with that, for the first time in a long, long time, Jaren's Outpost is at peace.
