Hey guys, my name is Johnny Artavanis, and this is Dial In.
In this episode, we're in John chapter 10, verses 22 through 42.
These are the words of God. Let's view them as such in Dial In.
John chapter 10, verses 22 through 42.
At that time, the Feast feast of dedication took place at Jerusalem.
It was winter and Jesus was walking in the temple in the colonnade of Solomon. So the Jews gathered
around him and said to him, how long will you keep us in suspense? If you are the Christ, tell us
plainly. Jesus answered them, I told you and you do not believe. The works that I do in my father's
name bear witness about me, but you do not believe because you are not among my sheep. My sheep hear So the Jews picked up stones again to stone him. Jesus answered them, and no one is able to snatch them out of the Father's hand. I and the Father are one.
So the Jews picked up stones again to stone him.
Jesus answered them,
I have shown you many good works from the Father.
For which of them are you going to stone me?
The Jews answered,
It is not for a good work that we are going to stone you,
but for blasphemy, because you, being a man, make yourself God.
Jesus answered them,
Is it not written in your law? I said, You are gods. If he called them gods to whom the word of God came, Jesus answered them, even
though you do not believe me, believe the works that you may know and understand that the father
is in me and I am in the father. Again, they sought to arrest him, but he escaped from their
hands. He went away again across the Jordan to a place where John had been baptizing at first.
And there he remained. And many came to him, and they said,
John did no sign, but everything that John said about this man was true, and many believed in
him there. All throughout John's gospel, John is hammering home a point. His goal is that you and
I would understand that Jesus is God, and we've covered in many previous episodes that Jesus shows and proclaims that he
is God. John 5, 18 details that the Jews were seeking to kill Jesus. Why? Because not only did
he break the Sabbath, but he even called God his own father, making himself equal with God. Why does John highlight this over and over again?
Because believing in Jesus as God is essential for salvation.
Because if you don't believe that Jesus is God,
you'll spend the rest of eternity in hell.
That's the message of the gospel.
So John highlights this and Jesus repeatedly proclaims this.
But every single time Jesus pleads with people to believe in him
and he invites them to receive him as Lord,
he is confronted by anger and rejection.
The more he claims his deity, the more opposition he faces.
Now in this passage, we will witness the final public declaration by jesus concerning
his deity in verse 24 jesus is walking in the temple and the jews come up to him and say how
long will you keep us in suspense if you are the christ tell us plainly you might be thinking wait
what i thought jesus had already told them plainly many times.
Well, he has.
And that's why Jesus responds to them and says,
wait, I told you and you do not believe me.
In verse 25, Jesus has already told them again and again and again
that he is the son of God.
And he's told them so plainly that he is not only the Messiah,
but that he is the son of God.
Since chapter five, they have already tried to stone him three times because his claims were so
obvious. Jesus continues, I have told you and the works that I do in my father's name
also bear witness about me, but you do not believe because you are not my sheep. Jesus is saying,
Not only have I told you that I am God, I have shown you.
The works that I do and the words that I say are a double whammy in proclaiming who I am.
How are you so blind?
So here's what Jesus does. He will once more proclaim his deity, and he will do so in a crystal clear fashion.
He says in verse 27,
My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.
I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.
My Father who has given them to me is greater than all, and no one is able to snatch them out of the father's hand. I and the father are one. Jesus tells this group of religious
leaders, I am not only a messenger for God or of God, I am God. I am equal with God. And because
I am equal with God, there are profound implications for those who come to me and receive me as Lord.
Jesus says in verse 28, whoever comes to me will never perish because I am God.
And the one who comes to me, no one will ever snatch them out of my hand because I am stronger
than all.
And the one who gives me my sheep is my father and no one will be able to snatch them out of his hand.
Here's what Jesus is saying, that the sheep of Jesus are both held in his hand and in his father's
hand. How is that possible? Because in verse 30, Jesus and the father are one. Jesus is so kind. In the middle of a testimony about his deity,
he answers the question
if anyone could possibly lose their salvation.
What's the answer?
Never, ever, ever in a million years.
And the reason is not because we have an inflated view of ourself
or the ability to preserve our faith.
Our security is because the one who holds us and
the one who secures us is God himself who holds us tightly in his hand. We are not secure because of
our own strength, but because of the strength and love and power and care of the one that holds us to himself. The future then is guaranteed for those whom the
father has given the son. Well, at this point, the Jews have had enough. And for the fourth time in
John's gospel, they pick up stones to crush him for claiming to be equal with God. And Jesus asked
him, for which of my many good works are you going to stone me?
And the answer, Jesus, it's not even because you heal the guy in the Sabbath anymore. It's not
even because you violate our traditions and our rules. It's because you being a man, make yourself
equal with God. But Jesus is so kind and he's so merciful and in verse 38
He makes one final plea and one final invitation for them to believe in him
He says even though you do not believe in me believe the works that you may know and understand
That the father is in me and I am in the father
He says please if you don't believe my, believe my works that I am God and I
offer you life. And the more that he does this, the more they will reject him. And it says in
verse 39 that they sought to arrest him, but he escaped from their hands. So what do we see in
this passage? We saw that Jesus is God. And if you're one of his sheep, Jesus says no one will ever snatch you out of his hand.
You could never ever lose your salvation.
Not because of your own strength, but because of the strength of the one who holds you in his hand.
Stay dialed in.
