The horses you've been given are sturdy mounts and have proven over the past day of travel that they will take you wherever you need to go, though not as speedily as the horses you'd known a few months ago.

Captain Sidiri Handler met with you in Waterdeep in order to gather your intel on the giant strongholds and movements and brief you on how you can continue to be of assistance to the City of Splendors. You were directed to check in on the surrounding communities while making your way back up. to the northeast in order to confirm reports of fire giant activity. Where are you headed? And, of crucial

importance, what's the vibe? Chill. Red has his forehead to the horse. Like, you know, forehead to forehead, staring at the eyes of this horse. Even though he can't, because they're, you know,

on either side, he's, like, kind of locked up. So on the side, you can see it. And he's just sort of staring there for a second as the others are getting the fire ready and he says, God, I miss Astor. Don't you miss shit fart, Doran? I haven't seen a herd of shit fart and God, it feels like forever.

You know? And Doran sort of stands there and puts his hand on the rump of the horse that took him to where we are now. He says, you know, I never really thought about owning a horse. And then there was shit fart. and I haven't thought about owning a horse since

Yeah Oh well why don't we ask these ones what their names are Mari and red light points to Mari He like flicks his hand which is somehow wet And just like kind of sprays her a little bit But I'd ask the horses what their names are We should have thought about that in the first place Hell yeah

We wouldn't have thrown such silly names on them Like Amicare Talk with animals I'll do it under Deress No, not under red dress. I just want you to tell me why your hand is wet. Oh, I wanted his mane to be shiny, so I licked my paw.

Gross. And you look in the horse's hair is all like slicked down. There were other ways to do that. Mari, you can see her hands get wet with, like, just normal water, and she kind of wipes her face. Like, she just lights her face right there. All right. And she casts speak with animals. Cool.

And, uh... One's not an animal. Oh, God. That one's a vampire? I don't think Jack accepted a horse. He's got his fancy new phantom steed, and he's been endlessly cycling through the, like, iterations on what he thinks is the coolest possible steed and chariot combination and, you know, get bored with silver with, you know, the Reds Rover's logo and just in an instant change it to, like, fancy gold with a flag on it or something. I picture, like, a holographic video game where you're, like, scrolling through them, and they're like, you know, in front of you, like, just. quickly changing.

You click on their hair, you make it longer. Absolutely. That like can't settle on what skin he wants to like leave his fancy new thing in. But they're like branded. Like one's like Batman.

And she goes over to... Does he want more wet? she goes over to Red's horse and uh oh no it's coming to me now be careful she's rough did the horse just bark oh boy

what's my horse is saying I don't know why they're always doing this when they feel they need to pet us Mari reaches into her bag and she finds like a sort of shriveled apple and holds it out and goes hey so I don't know if you like the but uh just you know wanted to check you do you got a name anything like to go by

well i don't know if you give me that apple i might the hell i tell you are you are you saying the or is that just like i'm a horse what is he saying marie is he saying beautiful things he's kind of well the other one the other one did not appreciate the uh the beads the burrs oh oh totally not everyone appreciates art Well, just, just, just... I know, I know. Give me the apple, lady, and you can call me Rico. There's the apple.

This is fine. Everything's fine. I bet you it's a really beautiful name, like Star Dancer or something. All right, sorry, we got, we got Jesse, we got Rico. Rico, and we have Rob. It's like even two R names, so it's not even like we're... Yes. It's not even planned out of that.

You know, you don't pick your name, I guess. It's just what these horses are named. Yeah. Rob. Yeah. This horse's name is Rob. What a beautiful name. I love that.

Rob. Huh. Do you think he wants to go by Rob or Robbett? Like the way it kind of rules off the tongue. Rob, Rob. Yes. So you're a friendly horse, aren't you? Mind if I call you, for Rob?

I would love that. For being such a friendly, friendly Rob. I'm real thrilled that Doran is riding Rob. This is what he's set up now. Very good. Expert horsemanship. I'm taking notes on what everything is, everything that's happening right now, and I said, Doran's horse is voiced by Harlan, named Rob.

It sounds like a terrible man. fans. Carlin's horse is voiced by Alex. It sounds like an emo going, yeah. And then she, Mari kind of just like, oh my God,

oh my God, okay, all right, goes over to Wim's horse and just goes, hi. The horse doesn't speak. He doesn't talk. He doesn't speak. Don't bog him.

He's a mute. I can't believe that this is the company I'm forced to keep. Oh, maybe it does talk. It's just a dick. I have to admit, every time I cast speak with animals, I think it's going to go one way, and then it always goes another, and I never learn. Oh, Marie. Maybe you're the problem. Who are you, my mom? Jeez. Taylor Swift always said, it's me.

the problem. That's my name. Taylor Swift? Taylor Swift. Wow, what a beautiful name for a horse. Spell, T-A-I-L-space, O-R, space. Taylor Swift. That is definitely an equine name. Look at the long, beautiful, blonde mane, and the gangly thin legs. This horse also has a jet that it uses all the time. No. This burns fuel. You have no idea. The emissions alone. Well done, men.

Mary, now we know their names. I feel like we never really know our horses until we know their names. Boy, do we now. Mario, you have a mosquito around your head. And she immediately turns off, speak with animals because there is just so much happening right now. And Red leads Rob over to a tree and ties them

Yeah. I mean, let's be real. It makes more sense as a horse name than a human name. It does, certainly. It's kind of got a tabaxy vibe, right? So you were in water deep, and as I mentioned before, Captain Sidiary Handler gave and received information about giant activity, et cetera, in the north and asked you to make your way northeast by way of horse through the communities to sort of like

check in on the different towns that you pass through and, you know, report back, send a Raven or a Kieran or how are you a Jack's message or whatever the fuck. But without any specific orders, like go through Donglow to Goldenfields to Amphail or whatever. You guys can just do what you will. Well, we know Rassalantar's north of here. We head there the first time. Remember, Doren? Yeah.

Salantar! Yeah, Rassalantar seemed like the people were silly there. Tis a silly place. We wouldn't belong. Were they all, I seem to remember them all looking like a thumb. I think they were twins or something. There were more than two people. Thumb-like, I seem to recall this conversation to you.

Regardless, yeah, let's take a break, and I see Wim's got the fire set up there, and I wouldn't mind stretching my legs a little bit. I can hunt us some lunch if anyone wants some rabbit. Wim nods in agreement. Sure. I love a little rabbit. Doren sort of cracks open his journal onto a big page that he's drawn a map of sort of their adventure so far. Oh, that's great, Doreen. Oh, thanks.

Jack, really means a lot to me, actually, coming from you. I mean... I love the detail you captured here. I traced it. Copied it from yours. So are we thinking up to Red Larch, to Yarder, over to Everland, and continue on east, till we find the fire giants? Is that the...

Well, I think fire giants are the next step, yeah. I think that makes the most sense. Unless I guess we stop at the Hamperat House. Hey, that's not a bad idea either. We can add to the horse collection. Swap your bad horses. for good horses. And Red walks over and points the map.

Yeah, we can head up this way. I think that would make sense. Yeah. Mari comes over to take a look at what's going on on this map because they're just saying a lot of names and she only has the vaguest idea as to where any of these places are. Yeah, a lot of shared history here that you're not privy to. Oh, sorry.

This is Amphel and Masselantara and Jack was talking about this place right here. Yeah. Red Larch. And look, there's golden. Fields. Now, the thing about Golden Fields, that was under attack from Stone Giants at the time. Wasn't it?

Hill Giants. Hill Giants. Right. Sorry. Yeah, they were plundering the goods of Golden Fields. They were having a big harvest festival, collecting all the sort of food and grub and sheep in the area, and it was the ripe for an attack. What does it have to do with hills? Oh, well, they

made a big hill for it up in Gredhog and damned off a river. It was a whole terrible ecological mess. I thought you were going to say that they were just taking all of the stuff and forming it into a giant Oh, that'd be pile giant. Oh, okay. All right. Honestly, they did do that to some of really wonderful things.

It's very hill-shaped each of them in their own little pile of hill-shaped treasure. Hey, we'd be heading through yard or if we went up this way and red draws past the Crip Garden Forest. We did want to stop by there once or twice. Dorn and I ran into one of the sisters from the hands. of Yarder the other day when we were in Waterdeep. It's a long story, but there might be something going on

there. Hey, wasn't the coin from a ship that left Yarder? The wooden duck coin. Yeah. Golden goose, wooden duck. Yeah, so, now what are these, Jack? I forget. Like, I've written them down, but

when we were up at the Oracle in the Eye of the Allfather, we were told we could travel west over mountains to the sea of moving ice. There among the glaciers we'd find Sfarbord, the burgh of the frost giant Yarl. The conch we seek rests on his icy throne. That's really far north. We could travel east over the mountains and snow to distant spires.

There on a cold mountainside we'll find a village of yak folk, and below that iron slag, the forge of the fire giant Duke. The conch we seek is in his quarters. or east, southeast, I guess from there, to the untamed moors and look to the sky for Lin Armal, the castle of the cloud giant countess, the conch we seek is in a secret chest in the highest spire. When Mari hears the mention of like going north, there's this brief moment where she starts to sweat

because she hasn't talked to anybody yet about her little experience. And on the spot where Lithia has touched her shoulder, where she can feel the cold again for a split second. And then she just tries to compose up and not react. Like, she's not really sure how to tell them what she's done yet. What's wrong, Mara? You look weird. Hmm?

No, I'm, I'm... It's just daunting, I guess. I think I... Yeah, it's just, it's a... Yeah, it's, that's... I mean, the distance and more giants. And it's a lot. And maybe I ate something weird.

And I'm just kind of... Yeah. Can you excuse me for a second? Oh. Sure. No problem. And Mari takes like five steps away and then Red's like, oh, oh, wait, wait, wait. And Red like reaches into his bag and he goes, here, and he throws a roll of toilet paper.

Just remember to scoop after it. I think it was the oysters. She grabs it, but she's like so stressed that her hands just soak right through it. And it just goes like, boom. Oh, no. It was my only role. Completely useless now. Oh, back to Jack's books.

Wim's like standing behind you, Doren, and she's stabbing. a finger down on this map that you've been creating at the hambrat house. It's like a particularly creative inscription on your map. Maybe there's like a little drawing that goes along with the name and she looks at you quizzically. Oh, that, it's, um, and Doran's kind of trying to answer the question while, while peering over his shoulder at the receding Mari. She's just like kind of standing on the edge of the thing, trying desperately to pull the water out of the roll of toilet paper. And he's not necessarily focused on what she's doing, but the fact that she's sort of stepped away, he's sort of distracted by that for a moment.

He's sort of trailing off. And Red realizing this turns to face whim to, she can't read the lips of Dorrit as he's talking. Oh, right. It's a homestead, basically. home base. It's a house that, well, we own, well, Jack owns, and... I don't think I own it.

Here, Red, take this for a moment. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. And Red and Jack, with the map and Wim sort of step aside. Yeah, it's sort of like a refuge of sorts, similar to Trollskel Manor, but a little nicer, maybe. Well, I mean, it... Yeah, and I think we've moved some... some, we've set it up with a fun to take care of people who need a little help along the way,

and so hopefully it's still doing good the last couple of weeks. We can definitely swing by there on the way north. You want to check it out? I mean, I'd love to know that, you know, the baker we left there has got everything well in hand. Yeah. Wim? Wim shrugs in an affable way, and then like marches or fingers along the road from where Waterdeep is sort of haphazardly through all the way to the hamper.

house. Yeah, yeah, we could do that way. Uh, look, there's a lot of world out there, Wim, and I, I think we're quite excited to experience it with you. I don't know which areas of this map have you been before. Jack's just eyes go a little wide when Red starts to promise Wim adventures and along, track along everything. He's not saying anything, but he's like, like, hmm? Remember Elister? Remember him? Yeah, see, the difference is Red has seen her zap a guy on fire on the beach like you know what I mean he's seen her use her his spells elister turned invisible and grew giant and stuff like that doesn't mean she's our caliber of adventurer whim points down at the map sort of proximal to scarborough and kind of indicates like

this area pretty much oh yeah there's tons more to explore all up here is frosty and cold and down here is hot and warm and here is wet red points of the water So you've never been outside of the dragons of Clarion's Lairwim? Where were you before that? She sort of does like a wishy-washy hand and gestures like I'm this tall now when I was this tall. Like she shows you with her hand. Yeah. She points like out towards some of the forests, you know, just south of loudwater.

Oh. Sheltered. I know the type. Red points to chest. Not very well traveled over here, it's true. And then Wim points on the map and points at you, Red, and then just kind of like a, oh? Like, where are you from?

Yeah, well, and Red points to like off the map to the far left. Well, over here is a place called Mazdica, and I'm from there. She does like a swimming gesture? Like, from here to here? Yeah, swim all the way on a boat. And then she points Like points all over the map And then on here and here and here and here and here and here

And then she points at you, Jack Well, I grew up split between water deep And Silbury Moon And he points those out on the map And then I've been done on lots of little expeditions Throughout the Sword Coast And a little further east And he sort of catches himself

And doesn't go into like too much detail About any particular dig site Other than the one where he's like And this is the one where I hired Dorsey and Kralath and Red, and we went and trekked into the woods there, and then hauled some stuff back out to Dawn Glow, and that's how the whole adventure started. And he died here.

Red points to the part where he got frozen in stone. Yep. Which one? Which time. But don't worry, Wim, you're going to see all of this. We're going to get to fight a hordes of enemies and really get our teeth wet with all the things we're going to experience. Are we?

Whim nods and then starts kicking dirt on the fire like let's go now I think there's an element of waiting for Wim to like turn to kick stuff at the fire and like to lock eyes or thread and say she is going on big adventures with us what do you mean yeah yeah what Wim is in the background actively stamping out the cook fire what do you mean I'm just I'm just saying it's exciting what but listen the we just we just had a whole conversation about Ellister not being ready for this he'd You know, he was a pretty competent guy, too, and we got to see him die twice and had a whole conversation where you were pretty clear.

People who weren't tested, proven adventurers on our level, they can't travel with us. And now you're planning to drag whim with us everywhere? Oh, you're right. I don't know that much about her, honestly. She sounds pretty sheltered. Yeah, I suppose so, eh? I don't know. What do you want to do about it?

I can't tell her no now. Look at a face. she's rolling up her bed roll and like smack in her horse on the ass like all right to adventure Taylor Swift no think about it this way

what would Ellister have had to been able to do to travel with us and then put Wim through those tests not die okay Red says it's if he's like is that the answer fight a giant

fight a dragon like what do we what do we think I don't know Jack look Wim seems pretty capable when Dawn and I were on the beach it was a guy with a with a spear. He threw it at us and nearly killed us, and she looked at him and burst in the flames. One go. You know, she was pretty, pretty together. And not to say that you're wrong,

I just, I don't know how to test her. And frankly, I don't think I want to test her. You know, look, Elister was a tinkerer. He was a very charismatic tinkerer who probably would have died. And so then what's Wim? I don't know. What is Wim? On the edge of the forest, Doran catches up with Mari. Oh, oh, sorry I didn't, uh, I didn't notice you were over here. And she, she had finally pulled, like, all of the water out of the roll of toilet paper, but then Doran startles her and it goes, whoop, right back in. Oh, screw it.

You weren't, uh, really going to, uh, no, I was not going to shit in the woods. I didn't think so. No. I just, I got this, I noticed on the ride up here, you know, we were,

I mean, mind you, we were exchanging stories, uh, about what we were doing in Waterdeep, and I noticed you're kind of quiet. You didn't really share much about what, um,

what you might have been doing in Waterdeep, you know? Oh, you know, I, no, I mean, I was mostly with you guys,

and I helped Jack figure out his outfit, and, And, you know, I had a quiet, I had a quiet night in there, in the house while you guys were off, living up your hot tub best life and... Yeah, yeah, yeah. Doran? Yeah, Marie. Have you ever heard of the shadow fell before? Shadow, shadow, shadow garden.

What did you call it again? The shadow fell. The shadow fell. No, no. You know, it sounds vaguely familiar, but I'm not very good with words and names and stuff. Why, why do you ask? I, what's, what's going on with you, Mari? I haven't been super honest with you about what I was doing when you guys went out that night, and I learned some things. I learned some things by, You know, and she kicks a rock away, you know, you knock on some doors and... I had a sneaking suspicion.

You have a sneaking suspicion of what, exactly? Well, I mean, Mari, come on, you've obviously been hiding a few little things, I mean. You know, I, you bring up, uh, bring up your experimenting. Yeah. Really hoping that no one. one notices how the really expensive oils that are now missing. Is that sort of like experimenting with maybe bringing people back from the dead? Not trying to bring people back.

That is an entirely different kind of magic that requires there to be a willing corpse in front of me. And I will say that there was no willing corpses in the building that I saw. I mean, there was that locked room of reds. There could have been lots of unwilling corpse. is that what you're saying is that you're you're bringing unwilling corpses back to life while you're alone i can't bring an unwilling corpse back that is just a zombie so so what were you experimenting with you're you're bringing back rats or cats or bats or no i was not bringing anything

back oh i just what are you what are you hiding for me we out with it come on are you are you stealing Are you- I'm not stealing. I, I walked into that space beyond near death when, when Elister died. And then I wanted to see if I could find that space again. And I tried to reach out and something reached back. Space, like that sort of, me, that kind of space.

You know, Mari, I'm a very simple dwarf. I don't deal with all this magic dajic that you guys deal with. When you say space, what do you mean? You've reached into the closet and something reached back here? I mean, if it helps if we need to use a sort of metaphorical space, sure, the closet or the waiting room in between life and death. That's what I was trying to reach, but I couldn't find it. Instead, I found a different place, and I found a different spirit, and it told me something. stuff. And I think we may need to pay it heed. Well, that's, uh, hmm, and Doren puts his hand on

his chin and he starts thinking, that's, uh, it's a lot more complicated than I thought it was going to be, you know, I, I thought maybe that you were just killing things on the side and, or stealing from, you know, some of us, but, I'm not stealing. No, no, I understand that now, but what you're talking about is far deeper than what, what I could probably comprehend at this point. I mean, I think, listen, is that the only thing you're hiding? I'm not hiding anything from you, Doran. And again, the sweat starts a little bit because she is.

Doran, I'm not, I'm not, I don't, I don't want to hide stuff from you guys, but I also know that I don't, you've shown a lot of reticence in the past about the fact that I have dealt with death and I need you. you to trust me if I say that there might be something bigger coming up that we might have to deal with and I want to tell the others but this this could be this could be a little bit of a shift from what I saw real scary and real big it's bigger than the ordaining Doran Doran takes a step back and sort of I want to contest that lie I want to see a if Doran picks up on whether you're lying or not.

Do it. Okay, so my insight versus your deception. After you roll a D20 and add your modifiers, whoever has the higher number. And I'm doing deception. And I'm doing insight? Yes. You roll the damage died twice. I rolled a one.

I rolled a 17. Doran, he sort of puts his hands on his hips. He leans forward, and there's this, like, large rock sticking out there out of the dirt. And he picks up the rock, and he turns, and he whips it into the forest, as hard as he can. And you hear, you're lying to me, and I can tell. God damn it. And he sort of starts a storm off back towards the... Doren!
