This is a terrible idea What's your marching order So I think Dorn was in the front Red behind him Whim beside him him and then in my mind marie and then jack yeah cool you do not perceive anything out of the ordinary and pass through the copse of trees however about an hour down the road you see two people up ahead of you oh this isn't terribly uncommon you have past other travelers without

much incident apart from a nod hello okay um these people are traveling the same direction as you, but they are on foot. Duren's prepared. He's got a hand ready for his axe at any time. Every time they pass somebody on the road. He's on edge. I feel like Red wouldn't.

I feel like this is, in his mind, safe road. We're only a few days out of water deep. You intend to hit Westbridge today. Yeah. So I think Red's pretty chill. I think he's still like, all I'm saying is we need a song for Red's rovers, something that people can hear.

We'll come right back around this road and pick you up and carry you the rest of the way. And in the meantime, we'll deal with the highway men. I mean, who knows? They could be killing people. You promised you'll get my backpack? Look, we don't make promises, kid, but he does. Of course, we'll find it. I can't promise.

comic bookie thing Jack has ever seen in Water Deep. It's just It's kind of like an automaton slash saber tooth tiger. Slash binder covered in stickers. Perfect. Yeah. Yeah. These kids are going to get robbed again. He was a chariot nerd.

and they speed off down the road towards Westbridge for one hour upon which time they are summarily dumped out into the mud and they have to walk the rest of the way. You know what, Jack, I don't know if I agree with what you did, but your heart was in the right place and I think it was a good call. Yeah. Had we spent one more minute on it, we might have come up with a better plan, but I appreciate that you're a man of action right now. I agree with you. Let's go back and stop those highwaymen. Let's go get some robbers. I did want to ask them quickly, like, for landmarks where the highway, but you know, they got, you know what?

We'll figure it out. Let's go. Yeah, we didn't really see any highwayman, did we? And we just traveled that road. Well, they said that way. Well, that's a mystery to find out when we get there. Yeah, so we'll just walk around saying, oh boy, I have so many valuables. Be a shame if they were taken. And maybe they're just not very smart.

Cannotica as well a few times. Come on, old buddy. Red reaches down and pulls Jack up. Let's do it like we used to do it. Rob and Jack. Yeha, Rob, let's go. And Red rides Rob with Jack on his back. The implications.

Check mark. Got my line in. The entire episode has been aiming towards that line. It's a culmination of a... Yeah, we ride. You ride back down the road towards this thick copse of trees. Red recognizes that this must be where the highwaymen are hiding. I don't trust that cops of trees, ACAB.

All cops are basically good places to hide. All cops are blind. All causes are bandit holes. Yeah, there you could. Yeah, Red slows to a trot and sort of gestures to the others and points in the direction. It's still far enough away that we get the drop on them. And he turns to Jack, you know, it is odd that they didn't attack us. It might be worth speaking with them first.

Yeah. Yeah, if you've got a beat on them, maybe we can loop around and get to the backside of them or something. Maybe they need help, Red? That's not what I mean What I mean is Maybe those kids were demons Well maybe that's true too They weren't demons Red

Mari, no? Okay. Let's go, guys. She hops. She hops down and comes with and just goes like, Yeah, yeah, there's highway men. It's not a show. Highway people.

Don't run off. Don't run off. Tell the others to stay, too. Oh, the horse don't run off. Yeah, it's on the horse. And Red Pazes trying to reassess where in his primeval awareness the five dots were. All five of these humanoids are located on the western side of the road. Looks like all five are on the western side, and that rhymes.

So it's a good sign. Let's approach quietly, see if we can't listen a little bit, and then if it seems like it, I'll make my presence known while you four get into position in case they attack. Sound good? Sounds like a plan. All right, you heard them. All quiet on the Western front.

Red will be taking a harsh lead to make sure, because he is far stealthier than everyone else combined. Stealth check. Whim, got a 21. Nice, Wim. Jack? Jack got a 17. Doran? 20.

Nice. An unnatural 20. Hey. Mari? I rolled a natural 20. Whoa. This makes up for my natural one last time trying to talk to Doran. And Red?

A 17. Go team Reds Rovers. That was without even the assistance of Pasozo Trace. I'm proud of them. Good rolling. Oh, wait, what? Crunch. As you sneak through the undergrowth towards this gathering of humanoids,

you begin to hear low voices. Red as you are leading the charge, you overhear a couple of words and gleam. that these people are talking about, their exploits, some lewd matters, and gold. Hmm. Right. Red sort of silently gestures to the others to sort of circle the encampment. Yeah, you don't see anyone standing on the ground. It takes you just a second to spot one of them in the trees about 40 feet away. There is a human man. sitting there on a low bow and he's got orange hair and light skin and he's got studded leather

armor and a long bow and kind of a smarmy facial expression. Wait a minute. Are you just telling Robin Hood? Are we coming across Robin Hood and his Mary Man? Robin Hood? Robin Hood? Never heard of him. Robin Hood. They haven't seen me yet then. Doesn't seem like they have. Has everyone else served? circled around or what's everyone else doing at this time?

Yeah, I mean, I'm following Red's suggestion and circling around with, you know, the Starflower staff ready in hand, trying to take light steps in my kicky new boots. They're a beautiful soft leather. Yes. Doran swings far left and goes around to the far side of where he's made it to Westbridge. Mari's on the other side of Doran. Like I sort of imagine it's like Mari and then Doran and then I feel like as soon as she sees. like red looking up she's like watching in the trees yeah red kind of points up to those who are looking at yeah red studies the figures in the trees as red sits around watching this other

dude sort of talk and gaffa with other folks it becomes clear where they all are based on just watching them converse they'll like look towards someone to answer them and then if you follow their eye line you pick out there's a woman sitting underneath the branches of another tree who's like stacked with rippling muscle who looks like she can take care of just about anybody red slowly stands up kind of enters into the center of the trees above him and clears his throat hmm the man with the orange hair who you'd spotted first looks at you in surprise He says, hey now, what's all this about it now? And then he hops down from the tree.

I heard that you five took from a young boy and his sibling earlier. He's not true, Red says, in his best, like, menacing voice, trying to channel the Power Rangers of Mazdica. Zordon, let's go. So who you are to be making this assertion. We are a traveling band of adventurers. Come home from the Crypt Garden Forest. We were bested by a terrifying monster. And we need to recover from our ordeal.

Red Roll, Roll Insight. 18? Yeah, these guys look like a band of adventurers. I mean, they check all the boxes. Okay. A strange creature hops down from its perch in the tree beside you, Red. Someone who you detected

with your primeval awareness, but did not spot even though they were very close to you. This is a tall humanoid covered in close cropped, sleek, gray fur, appearing for all the world like a huge rabbit

with long ears and jet black eyes. Hello! And he just looks at you with this terrible stare. Red has a tough time like maintaining the menace with a giant bunny in front of them. Can I pet you? Is that a giant rabbit?

Hello. Hello. Well, look, you may be adventurous, but that doesn't mean that you didn't have some hand in the two boys. Did you see them cross through these woods? You're awfully close to the road. No, like I said, we've been just kind of, uh, just licking our wounds as it may be, but I did see some bed.

here. Maybe those were the ones you're talking about they passed through a little while ago. Ah, yeah. So which direction did they head? They were headed the other way. South. South. Huh. All right. Red, I guess

we'll roll perception on the three remaining in the trees and on these to see if there's a Jansport backpack. Yeah. Or the equivalent of. So you've spotted three so far. There must be two more. There's like a big dumb old dude sitting on a low branch of an oak tree that's he's not well hidden um you you you can

roll perception to spot the fifth as red's chatting i feel like the three of us are slowly creeping in getting a little closer sure 21 yeah yeah you don't see any gear but you do see a goblin way up high in a spruce tree keep away from dorin huh well red pulls down his mouthpiece, the one that kind of veils him in shadow and speaks. Well, fair enough, if you're adventurers, you're adventurous. I suppose, keep an eye out for any bandits. I'm wounded myself, frankly, and I'm so glad you're not bandits because the five of you easily, easily would have bested me in my sack of gold.

Oh, Shirley, the likes of you doesn't travel by yourself, Maybe a companion or two or three? Oh, yes. Well, they headed on to Westbridge, though. I only hung back because I ended up speaking to those boys, as I said. But I'm going to catch up with them in Westbridge anyway. Oh, and usually we see people and horses around here. Yes, I rode through on one, too.

They took mine as well with, I'm faster on my feet. As I'm sure this guy knows, and I pat the bunny man on his shoulder. He lays his ears flat along his skull and says, Wait, Ralph, do I know you? Me? Yeah. I don't know. I don't think so. Look familiar.

Possibly. Sort of paces around, gets out in front of you. I don't think I recognize you. Have we met before? Are you part of the dark tide? I don't know what that is. Right. No, I don't think we know each other.

Red kind of looks at them with a perplexed look. Anyway, I guess I should get going. As I said, lots of heavy gold to move on to Westbridge. And Red turns around, and I think, like, kind of shrugs loudly, genuinely, like, not in the direction of his companions around, but kind of, like, letting them know that maybe we retreat type vibe. The beefy lady unfolds herself from where she was sitting, and she is beside you. in a moment. Oh. And she puts a heavy arm over your shoulders, red,

and the rabbit man is on the other side of you. So you're like, there's one of them on either side. And she's like, If the gold is so heavy, perhaps I can help you with that. I thought you were just adventurous. Adventurers who occasionally help out other adventurers for some coin. Ah

You lied to me Not many people bluff old red-handed Robin But you did Well done, nasely boy He gives you a facial expression like Who, me? Well, you have the drop on me But not my friends

I thought she said that you were alone Well, looks like both of us are good bluffers Dorn hits his bird ring Yeah, Murray taps her Jack taps his bird ring on his staff And steps out, you know, into the line of sight with him Yeah Well, at least now it's a fair fight.

Five v. Five. Now, why don't you take your arms off me? Red says, it sort of shakes the arms and steps back. She cracks her knuckles and glares at you, but recognizes that maybe this isn't going to be a fight that she can win easily. I got one question before we all lay it out. You did rob those two boys as they passed, which means you probably spotted us.

Why did you let us pass? the big old human dude hops down from the tree where he was sitting he's got like a long leather coat on almost like a duster and it's worn open and his like ponchy belly is exposed and on either side he's got two cutlasses and he sort of swaggeres over to you in order to stay around in this business you got to pick your battles wisely

there are some folks that you know that you can take and some some meals you just gotta pass on I'll say there are foolhardy bandits and there are old bandits but there are no old foolhardy bandits

he tips his cap to you milady oh don't like that we already have one of those with him it seems like nothing's changed there's still a fair number of us and we're still just as adapted combat

as you so rightfully asserted. And that's why you don't have an arrow in your back. No, no, no. That's why you all aren't torn to shreds by my friends. Hi. So, first things first, give us back the backpack that you took from the boy. The goblin in the trees

like pulled it out from the hiding place and is looking at it in its power rangery glory. What are you trade for? Your lives, stupid throw it down. Mari is sort of standing there and she, there's a spell she's been working on and the trees start to just jiggle just a little bit around them. As the magic starts to well up in her. What the fuck?

It's fun. Throw it down. Doran's standing still quite a bit back, just sort of observing and waiting for the moment if he needs to step in. A butterfly. Landed on my axe, guys. He's picking grass. This early in the year, too.

Red, stop talking. It's moved onto my shoulder. It's the first one of spring. You can't hurt the first butterfly of spring. It just got back. So unconcerned with this comment, knowing how it's going to go. It's just like, yeah, yeah.

Guys, prokuses. It's so good. bring ephemerals. Look at them. It's not the first time Doran's seen a group of bandits and these, they don't look like a threat. Let's just say that. The goblin throws down the backpack but stays

aloft in the tree clinging to it for dear life despite how it shudders. Thank you. Redd pushes through the people and goes over and picks it up and slings it onto his back. Oh, it does look good on you, Red. Right. And he opens it up and checks it and makes sure all the gold and stuff is in it. Yeah, there's like

a small purse. Good, and he zips it back up because it has a canonical zipper. Yeah, it does. He throws it back on his backpack. It looks great on you, Red. All right, and he heads back to like where he was standing between the two big people.

So how do we want to do this? Jack, Doran, Mari. Here's how I see it. We can all just part ways shake hands and agree not to tangle with each other or there can be some business. Well, look, we all know.

the business is going to go on our favor. We outnumber you. And trust me when I say, you called it rightly on our prowess. So, I don't think you want option two. Option one would have to come with some caveats. We don't want you robbing people, especially not little kids. What's a caveat? A caveat is a thing when you eat too much sugar.

Tell them, Jack. A cavity is a... That's a carrot. No, no, a cavit in your tooth. Oh, right. I thought that's like an indentation. Mario also didn't get in. Later at night, she's like, guys, what's a caveat?

No, no, that's a cavity. Oh, a caveat is when you add a couple of requirements, a little bit of rules and regulations to follow after the fact. Yeah, that's what I meant. Requirements. Yeah, we can't knowingly leave this place with, you know, bandits that could hurt others, right, guys? And Red sort of turns to you four. No, and I think it's in their interest to know.

we're like officially on patrol from Waterdeep. We're going to have to tell them this. You can hang around and be bandits only so long because there's going to be another patrol coming through. You've got to be smart about it if you want to get old like this guy. Or you could find out what happens when you mess up again and the trees continue to shake a little. Look, the truth of the matter is

whether your adventurers are bandits, it don't matter. You want to hear a little hard truth? There's some real shit going down. giants are coming down from all over this place there was a hill giant nest not too far from here and we ended that thing the whole land is being ravaged and pillaged by these terrible things and on top of that let me tell you this nasal boy there's a big old darkness coming

and if you aren't on the right side of things all humanity might not stand a chance so listen up lugheads red says and kind of addresses everybody you can keep nickel and diming and picking little kids when they walk down the road and skipping every other adventurer, or you could do something with your lives and start trying to help people around you, and start giving back to the world that needs people like you to be lifting your arms against true evils. Hmm. It's a good option.

There's a variety of responses to this very interesting tirade from Red. the man with the bow and arrow kind of rolls his eyes and the beefy lady to your left snorts in derision but the rabbit person is deeply considering what you have to say red picks up on that and snaps his head to him and says look I did my fair share of poor deeds and he almost looks past the rabbit at like kind of jack in the distance

And I have my fair share of atonement to make up for that. But let me tell you this. When I started working towards a greater good than myself, it was the best day of my life. And every single sleep after that, I've slept more soundly and happier than I have every other night before. Well, I don't know about all this stuff, but you're giving me a lot of think about.

You've given me a lot to think about. Is this the rabbit? Yeah, I can't. He was like, oi-gove. He was, oi, yeah. I do love the idea that he drops it, like, oh, my God, I've been doing this for so long. Baddits need to be British, guys. I put on this fucking accent to impress you guys.

I didn't even know you could still do that while missing that many fingers. He, like, licks his teeth at you. Look, look, there's four of you versus six of us. You still want to do this. Look, your lives are forfeit if you push this, guys. Throw it on your weapons. Maybe you don't need to commit your life to change, but if you throw down your weapons and your head on your way,

that's enough for me at least.
