It's miles away.
Don't go too high.
In and out, in and out.
Dice Pride.
Corpses in the yard.
Very good.
You got one round.
What is going on?
No, no, no.
Put down the bow.
What the hell is she doing?
We would like to help.
Oh, huh.
I don't know what's going into us.
What are you doing?
What?
Knock in.
Did you see where Tamil went?
She didn't leave.
She didn't get fed up with us, did she?
I last saw her over.
Oh, huh.
She's gone, huh.
Oh.
Oh.
She's not...
She left us red.
Where are you, Temeel?
Welcome back to Dyshame.
This is Season 2, episode 172, Tower of Strength.
MVP this week is Nikki for their bum cream facts.
Not sure that Dwarven bum cream facts.
Not sure that Dwarven Bum Cream works exactly the same as the human version of Bum Cream,
but we do appreciate it nonetheless.
Ha ha ha, but.
Thanks so much, Nikki.
You are this week's MVP.
All right.
Shall we do it?
Yeah, let's play D&D.
Woo!
In the quiet of the moonwood, the wreckage of the down airship stands stark against the landscape.
like the burned-out skeleton of some giant monster.
The party contemplates its pieces and each other.
Witted, what are you up to?
From the moment he heard any kind of commotion
with them having stumbled on the wreck site,
you already saw him, like, jogging over
and pulling out pieces of the backpack.
Like, by the time he gets the wreck,
there is a gauntlet being pulled on,
understanding, oh, it's just a wreck
and hearing a little bit of the story.
Like, he's already still like,
pulling the rest of the gauntlet.
on. When he hears a creature was in the area that took them down, he's like, yeah, the full suit's
coming on right now. Like, this thing takes a while to get on. If there's any possibility of a
creature here. So by the time this is happening, he's already fully suited up, and he's taking
off into the air just to kind of patrol around in the air and keep an eye in the sky.
Don't go too high. I fear that you might be seen by giants in the distance if you go above that
tree line there. And Doran
sort of wanders around the rubble
kicking it, nudging it,
looking for any leftovers.
Whitty does not slow down slightly when you call
out, like the very reasonable
suggestion. Maybe don't go above the tree line
where you're super visible, dude.
We are afforded an aerial
view of this crash
site.
It's recent enough that it hasn't been
overtaken by greenery and from above
it looks like a wound
in the landscape. The
largest piece of this airship, the aft castle, has been broken off and it's exposed on one side
off to the south. Its exterior timbers are just ripped off and blackened by an old fire.
You can see this through the dimming light in the sky, like the sun is going down in the west.
The forward upper deck of the airship has been flung some distance west in the crash and it's
sitting crazily on one side against this ancient pine tree.
tree that's been ripped out partly by its roots and is like just lying on the ground.
You see other burned timbers, assorted furnishings strewn around, though with your keen eye,
they look picked over. You don't see any valuables apparent from the sky.
No scrap of metal is catching that late afternoon sunlight.
You don't see any apparatus that would have permitted.
this airship to remain aloft.
So whatever Witted has in mind
about how a ship like this would have worked,
there's something missing here.
Looking over this, he takes note,
uh-oh, picked over,
just thinking like scavengers, Jawa style.
Like he's like, oh, okay.
Nakes note of that.
Kind of says under his breath,
oh, poor thing, you were a beauty, weren't you?
And then just before he comes down
to deliver this news,
missing like a lot of what's going on down there.
Witted Will, under the guise, of course,
he's just getting the aerial view and looking out,
assuming he sees no monsters incoming or anything.
He will, with the last light of the sunset in the west,
just, and maybe even without meaning to unconsciously drift a little to the west in that direction,
trying to see if he can get a glimpse.
Joe, I will ask, is there any pot?
possibility that from where he currently is in the sky, maybe 200 feet in the air, looking to
the southwest, would Widdid be able to get his first glimpse of the Vonen Dod in the distance?
It's miles away, but based on the geography of the river valley, I think he might have a vantage point,
and if it's big enough, he might be able to, like, see something. Yes. With all of Witted's
avarice, he is able to spot the telltale gleam of sunset burnished adamantine nestled in the foothills of
these far distant mountains. What are you up to? And you see I'm like wanting to stay up there
and slow. Like I should go tell them about the scavengers though. They might be closed.
and he comes down to the ground, lands like boom,
but is already unpacking and removing the armor.
Looks like the ship has been picked over,
just awarding to everyone.
We might have company of different sorts.
Yeah, yeah, we should probably keep going.
Doran, by the time that Widdid's boots are back firmly on solid ground,
you have found some remains.
There are ribs and skulls and bowels and bowels,
and vertebrae of people whose names you had once known and are now probably lost to your memory.
These are shipmates, the remains of the crew of this airship.
Coritz, is there anything they won't pick through?
Are you all right, Doran?
Me? Oh, yeah, yeah, I'm good.
And it's at that moment that the thought went through his mind, again, where many months ago
when he had stood in a similar spot.
He thought to himself of the failings that he had had as a unit officer in the army
and how that affected him and how he never wanted to lead again
because he had led so many people to their own demise.
And now looking around, he sort of comes to the other realization that you can do nothing
and you can do everything and still end up with the same result.
Yep, you know what, Tamil, I am. I'm very good.
It's a sobering reminder of our reality.
That someday we'll all be back in the soil at some point.
Whim signs, you survived this?
Yeah, right?
Unbelievable.
So, let's use this as a reminder to be safe and be smart as we approach the tower,
which might very well be overrun by violent,
aggressive, insanely strong, sanely powerful giants.
Well, let's be positive, why don't we?
The bigger they are, the harder they fall.
Is there a chance that the fire giants are guarding the Vonendod?
The ones that were left here,
but their task is to just sit with it for some reason?
Possible, likely.
Yeah, I mean, look, let's hope Chaos Hammer has more intel on the Von Indod.
For all we know, that tower has been watching the Von Indod
for however long it's been marred there.
and they'll have all the reports and comings and goings.
And I'm sure Chaos Hammer just misplaced a raven.
Or maybe, like us, he couldn't get him to send a letter.
We've been there.
All right, let's go.
Redsard nervously hops back on Chad and starts riding towards the tower.
Flame on, Abigail.
We continue on our way.
Do we want to approach stealthily?
Yeah.
I mean, more or less, my thinking here is to creep along these paths until we reach sight of the tower and once in sight, observe until we know more.
Maybe one of us, Doran sort of looks back at Red, can scout a little closer and tell us exactly what's going on.
Red, sort of looking down like he was distracted, like thinking to himself, just sort of snaps up.
What? Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I'll, uh, you know, when we see it, I'll ping the ground, do some prime evil awareness and see if I can, hey, maybe I can get some numbers on the tower too.
Hey, and that's at that moment, Doran says the red.
Yeah, are you, are you good? Are you with us here?
Great, present. Always here. You know me, buddy. In and out, in and out.
Hmm.
It is fully dark by the time you make your way to this tower stronghold.
And you're able to pause and dismant your horses and goats as you had planned because there is a generous clearing around the tower that affords a view of the starry sky, upon which a four-story rectangular tower makes an impressive silhouette.
Mm-hmm. The tower.
A low stone wall forms a perimeter around the base of the tower and encloses a yard whose purpose is not immediately apparent from the distance that you are currently.
How many feet away are we from the tower?
200 feet.
Red will hop off of Chad and do his primeval awareness to see if he can sense any humanoids or giants within five miles.
Focusing on the tower.
there is one solitary humanoid within the tower oh red sort of gets up slowly well that seems odd looks towards the tower
there's only one person in there what person you said he had forces but one humanoid dwarves gnomes humans tabaxis there could be more in there but
But I'm only sensing one.
And you would only detect them if they were alive, correct?
Yeah. Yeah, I suppose so.
Witted shakes his armored head.
I don't like the sound of this.
And you see Reggie climb out from his arm.
Reggie, stealth mode, for both of us, honestly.
And he cloaks, Reggie cloaks, and he just stays there.
He says, I'm staying here.
he says it out loud.
Reggie's going to go take a look ahead
if that's okay with everyone.
Please.
Yeah.
I think that might be wise.
That'd be excellent.
We did kind of flies into the air
and Reggie flies towards the tower specifically
and tries to like climb in through a window to find this person.
200 meters is going to take him a little bit.
Red walks over and ties Chad off again and just adjusts the saddlebags.
As Reggie flies up into the air and
approaches the tower, he's able to see that the yard of this tower has a few corpses
in it inside of this walled-off area.
Corpses in the yard, he says out loud as he's looking through like Reggie's eyes.
Damn.
The tower itself has been boarded up, almost as if undergoing a siege.
Reggie has to fly around a little bit before he's able to find a way of entering the tower.
One of the doors on the side is open about six inches.
Does he go in?
Yeah, I think he's relaying this all back to me and I'm relaying it to the team.
There's some kind of battle happened here.
This isn't looking good.
Be careful, Reggie.
All right.
Go on in and he will kind of climb in through the upper part.
of the doorway.
Red turns around and just keeps his eyes on the woods behind us as this is all happening.
Timiel will also keep watch.
Yeah.
And adversely, Doran's listening to waited relay Reggie's sightings and he's growing more and more
anxious by the moment.
You can see him like almost ready to dart in.
He's like got his axe.
He's gripping it real tight and wringing it in his hands.
It's sort of like with every moment his foot is.
Inching.
Steady now.
Mm-hmm.
Inside the bottom floor of this tower, there is another scene of carnage.
This is a common room with space for a dozen people to live comfortably, places to eat, some
cots for sleeping, and there are dwarven bodies on the ground here.
of them look like they have been partially dismembered.
Bodies.
Bodies on the first floor.
Dwarven bodies.
It looks like they were killed where they stood.
If there's one person in the tower, Red,
they might be a survivor.
I'm thinking, I hope it's chaos, Habber.
Just keep.
Just keep relaying, keep relaying.
And Red is like, again, facing the woods, getting more
more nervous, and he sort of looks over to his right to Temeal.
And Tammil sees that same look in his eye that she glanced at earlier, and that he
continues just sort of scanning the woodline.
There's something that's unsettling her.
There's an aspect of red now that she's become aware of, and maybe knew before, but just
was enjoying the camaraderie of, like, this jovial fellow traveler and adventurer who's
really great with a bow. So I think that there's a moment of kind of like doubt and suspicion
that's creeping into her mind. And then she kind of like shakes her head and she'll not
turning her back or turning her gaze fully away from red. She'll say, Witted, can you describe
the nature of the wounds on the bodies? Were they burned? Yes. Let me take a look a little
bit closer Reggie and he scuttles over to one of the bodies to take a closer look. Do they look like
Burns or
Reggie, please make a medicine check?
Absolutely. Can I make the medicine check for him or does he have to make the medicine
check? Yeah, if he's relaying information directly to you and you're interpreting,
then you can make a medicine check.
I said that with such confidence that I have a good medicine check and I'm here to tell
y'all, I got a minus one. I'm like, bodies, dwarven bodies work the same as
Arbor, right? That's the same idea, same concepts, basically.
His helm is removed from his shoulders
Dwarves can't live with their heads off, right?
How many hearts do they have?
How much blood is in one dwarf?
And there's way too much blood.
It's way, definitely more than one dwarf.
I rolled a three, and it's a minus one,
so I got a two and all.
Excellent.
Never mind.
See, I was going to try to give you Bartwick,
but that's not going to help.
Yeah, no, I very much appreciate the offer, but that ain't going to get me there.
Yeah, for sure they're dead.
For sure, they're dwarves.
Apart from that, maybe, like, there's too much blood.
I keep getting Blair Witch scared through Reggie's input.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
All right, let me just, oh, my gosh.
No, no, it's one of the dead dwarves.
So, like, it's just bodies that I keep, like, up, like, you see Reggie, like, backing away from one of the body's size.
scared by and he turns, it's another two
Dorm's like, nah. And he's like,
no, Reggie's trapped in a haunted
house right now. It's very appropriate.
I love the idea that you're watching it on your
wrist video and the camera just pans over
and Dorn is just eating popcorn next to you.
Oh, oh, don't go in there. Don't go in there,
Reggie. Here's the thing. There's still
one living thing in there and that's the
one where you're going to come up to the
you creep up the stairs and it's going to be standing
in the corner facing the other way. Let me tell you how
it happens. Swinging down.
Reggie, do you continue?
Yeah, Reggie, I'd say I can't really get a lock on the woods.
Let me just, I'll go further in.
Hopefully, it clears something up.
And I would be making stealth checks and being a little more careful,
except Reggie's invisible and there's someone alive in here that now he's worried about.
And when he knows that the team cares about Chaos Hammer,
he continues going deeper in and up.
And as Reggie's continuing, Tamil sees Red,
who's getting more and more nervous, more and more frantic,
as this like tension is ratcheting up
with Reggie climbing the tower
and Witted getting nervous
and Red's just sort of like
frantically looking around the woods nervously.
DeMille reach out a hand and put it on Red's shoulder.
What are you doing? What?
He like turns and you see like a ferociousness
and he really bears his fangs for a second
and then quickly realizes who you are
and sort of stops.
As soon as you bear teeth,
her grip changes to move up closer to your neck
and kind of more in a, like, a finger-splayed,
the way that you would discipline a dog, you know what I mean,
to simulate, like, teeth around its neck
and just, like, snaps it up to your neck.
Red, lock in.
What?
What is going on?
There's just these woods.
There's something up here.
There's something in these trees.
I can see it.
I can sense it.
It's around it.
It's everywhere.
Can't you sense it?
Can I sense?
Roll perception.
Twelve.
You don't hear anything at first, Temeel.
And then there's a whisper on the wind.
If only I could.
Tamil will visibly tense.
She'll kind of hunker down a little.
Now, not as frantic as red is,
but kind of on a similar wavelength.
And she'll kind of like nudge Doren and she'll say,
Witted, I think we should hurry things along with Reggie.
And you can tell Wittittitt's visibly distracted by what the input is.
He's so focused on that.
He doesn't seem to understand the urgency.
He says, right, right.
Yeah, and Doren similarly is sort of distracted with his thoughts about what's going on who's alive
and not paying too much attention to the conversation
you're having with Red.
Mm-hmm.
Inside, Reggie's going further up and further into the tower.
Invisible, but not being slow,
being rather reckless at his movement, I would even say.
He's flying, right?
He's flying, yes.
So flying's not that loud.
Does he make sound when he's flying?
What I'm envisioning is, since I'm not really making stealth checks,
yes, admittedly he's like a bat.
When he glides through the air, it's almost ghostly quiet,
but he's moving so quickly also that I'm picturing you hear the occasional tinkle of like
he bounces off of this surface, takes off into the air, glides onto the stairs,
ricochets with a scrape off the stairs kind of, and is like bounding with these little like
movements and skittering. So you, he's not being super quiet, but he is invisible, so I'm banking
on that. Very cool. Reggie makes his way up to the second story of this tower.
These appear to be private chambers, although the doors are largely swung open, and the rooms seem to be abandoned apart from one body lying in the hallway, beyond which another staircase wins its way up.
Seeing no living people here, he's going to assume that they're probably at the top of the tower. He keeps going.
The third story has some utilitarian rooms, there is a kitchen, some commode style rooms, there's like a war chamber, and as Reggie rounds the corner and looks through the doorway into this war room, there is a figure seated.
at a table.
Their back is to Reggie.
This dwarven figure
is motionless
with their head
in their hands.
Reggie starts
to quietly now
skitter towards
who he presumes to be
Chaos Hammer,
trying to keep his distances
as best he can.
He wants to go into the room
and circle around
to get a view of him from the front
and see what's going on with this.
Make a stealth check for me, please.
Right.
Yeah, that makes sense.
Come on, Reggie.
Do I roll with advantage due to stealth
or considering this is noise-based
am I just rolling one step?
You're invisible.
That's advantage on a stealth check.
All right.
Reggie does have a plus six on stealth.
Get it.
Get it.
Get it.
Get it.
first and then second roll oh critical hit on the first roll well done i would love to be
on the table invisible like almost going right up to his face i'd be willing to take that risk
yeah what's the opposite of a dice shame oh a dice praise a dice praise reggie lands silently on the
tabletop and crawls his way towards the dwarf who has his elbows on the table and is
cradling his face in his hands. Reggie can see only part of the facial expression, one which
appears to read numb disbelief, shell shock, but a blank
strained visage.
We like zoom into Reggie's little eyes
and then out again of Widdid's eyes.
And he says under his breath,
Gedro Chaos Haber, I presume.
Chaos Hammer?
Yep, I found him.
Doran hears that and charges in.
She doesn't look good, Doran.
No, no, no.
No, you idiot.
Temeel will tackle Doran as soon as he starts running.
I mean, strength versus decks
or whichever you prefer.
Athletics?
I rolled a 13 athletics.
Fabulous, fabulous.
That's a 19 for athletics.
Okay.
What does it look like
when you get out of Tamil's tackle
and take off?
Yeah, I picture Tamil like takes me down
and we thrash around
in the leafy bushes there for more.
Yeah, there's like fresh spring flowers
that you guys are just tearing up.
Yeah, and Doran, like,
squirms out from underneath you and scrambles to his feet and darts towards the tower.
And Red bolts out after him.
Red is much faster than Doran, but he's not stronger than Doran.
So Red blows past Doran and spins around drawing his bow and aims at Doran.
Ooh.
What are you?
Are you going to shoot me, Red?
You're going to stop me from trying to help my friend?
If I have to.
And you all see Red having pulled this arrow back
and the frantic nature of his eyes,
the sweat beaming down,
and you see in his eyes the reflection of that shape,
that bizarre shape,
a box in his eye.
Doran, you've seen it before,
and he's holding the arrow shakily pointing it at your head.
Don't make me do this.
I can't, I can't lose you too, Doran.
And the thoughts that went through Doran's head, he thinks to himself of blurting out,
go ahead and kill me, you always wanted to kill me, or, of course, it's in your nature, you bloody assassin.
But he sees the infernal puzzle box in his pupils.
And Doran suddenly realizes that this is a crazy world, we're on a crazy adventure, and this is a crazy place,
and he can't just necessarily trust that this is.
entirely red just don't do it so he please he backs down red red put down the bow come on now
dorin walks up slowly to you red and putting his hand up right against the tip of the arrow hoping that
you don't release it and he brings it down you know with the top of the bow down facing to the
and gently releases your arm and takes the bow and arrow from you and...
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
I'm sorry.
Doran.
No, it's okay.
Just...
I don't know what's gotten into us.
And Red throws his arms around Doran and just starts, like, sobbing.
It's his place, Doran.
Yeah, I picture you kind of...
You fall into my arms.
You release all your weight on it.
Yeah.
Right, just falls into your arms.
I'm sorry.
I'm so sorry.
It's okay.
I'm sorry.
to. And that's when
Doran starts to drag red back
towards where Timiel is probably
still in the brush, you know?
It's his
place, Doran, it's losing Kralath,
it's seeing that thing, it's seeing the airship
again, it's that kid.
That kid, I killed Doran.
It's all coming back. It's all.
It wasn't
the kid. You remember it wasn't the kid.
It was something else.
I just...
for all we know that that's what
that's what I know
could be happening chaos hammer in there
I might be running into a death trap
I've got to be smart about this
and hell
come here
and he just holds you for a minute
yeah
and red you can you can hear
you can like feel the muscles tense in his back
like loosen
and you can feel red kind of slide back to
normalcy
thanks buddy
I need a time.
And he stands up and shakes his head.
Inspiration.
Oh, yeah.
Inspiration to Harlan for that lovely role playing to Doran for the contribution to
Timil for tackling that motherfucker.
Yeah, that was good.
And also to Tim for doing some much needed scouting.
All four of you, absolutely, inspiration.
Oh, thank you.
Well deserved.
Finally, I can stop doing all this red shit.
Anyway, I'm trying to get inspiration.
Dice pride.
Yes.
Yes.
Dice pride.
There we go.
Red stands up and shakes his head and looks towards Temeel and doesn't see Tameel or Witted.
Tameel's invisible.
Oh, where Tameel go.
And glances towards the tower.
She didn't.
No, no, no.
We would have seen.
You look back towards Wim where she's like keeping an eye on everybody's.
mounts and she just shrugs her shoulders like I didn't see it she wouldn't have
waited did you did you see where Tamil went she she she didn't leave she didn't get fed up with us
did she uh I'm over here is she not near you I but I was I was I was I last saw her over oh
huh she's gone huh oh oh she's not she she left us red where are you Tamil as you were having the
the tense moment to meal doesn't know how to diffuse it doesn't know how things are going to go down
doesn't really know what's going on between the two of you so she casts greater invisibility on
herself and she'll start walking when you begin to calm him down and start dragging him back
she'll pause for a minute and hear overhear that little bit of conversation because her perspective
when she saw that vision she saw red attacking she didn't know it was a kid so now she has that little
bit of information as well. She's going to keep walking towards the base of the tower now that
she's invisible. The text of message, I don't have to see the target. I just have to be familiar
with them and point in their direction. And if we know that he's at the top of the tower, this is
120 foot range. And it sounded like there were only four stories. Is that correct? That's right.
So this would be well within the range. She's just going to point up to the top of the tower.
and she'll say, General Chaos Hammer, I am here with red-handed Robin and Doran Iron Fist.
I'm a companion of his, and if you are in need of assistance, we would like to help.
Reggie does not hear the message, and so, from his perspective, on the table, we see this dwarf lift his head from his hands.
and look dead-eyed at the blank stone wall ahead of him.
With the screech of wood on stone, his chair moves back and he slowly stands and slowly turns from the table looking over at the empty black door wall.
way behind him.
He then begins to take very slow steps down towards where he knows there must be people.
Wait it, where are you around here?
Right over here, bodgy.
You think you found chaos hammer?
I did find him, but he's moving now.
I'm going to keep following him.
Hold on, you think it's chaos hammer.
What does he look like?
Describe him.
Uh, well, it's, it's chaos hammer.
He was the leader here.
He'd be the last dwarf standing if there was any kind of an attack.
Well, hold on, no, no, no, what does he look like?
What, what color is his beard?
What color is his hair?
He's not wearing any arbor, but I assume it's just because it got damaged.
I mean, he has brownish eyes and long beard, a stout.
Does he have a scar over his right eye, over his forehead?
No, no scars at all.
I don't know who that is, but that's,
Definitely not Chaos Hammer.
Who is it?
Tamil, how close are you to the bottom of the tower?
Tamil is standing by the door, like whatever door is visible of the tower, like right next to.
You don't hear them talking about this, do you?
No, and they have no idea that I'm there.
Tamil, you hear footfalls inside of this dark tower.
You hear feet coming down.
the stairs slow measured steps and slowly through the gloom of this dark room a figure
emerges walking toward you the figure of a dwarf does it seem like he can see me yes in fact
he's looking right at you.
Then immediately, I think something ticks off in Tamil's mind.
He shouldn't be able to see me, kind of a, you know, a thought flies through her mind.
And so she starts kind of backing up towards the edge of the clearing again.
He's moving slowly, but surely in your direction.
Tamil.
Shit.
Tamil will drop the invisibility, turn around, and just start bolting towards red, Doran,
Witted, and Wim.
Guys, I think I fucked up.
As you see, Tamil.
drop the invisibility and begin to run your attention is brought to the yard of this tower
where this dwarf also begins sprinting after tamil and it's fucked up because he's faster than she is
what's not that's not chaos hammer what the hell is she doing that's not chaos hammer
and register it's firing arrows and i like i imagine thematically like i'm not ruling they're just like
missing. Like we see the side profile.
Yes. Of like them running and arrows
are just landing in the grass as this
thing is chasing to meal.
Everybody roll for initiative.
Hell. Yes.
You say yes. But if this is the thing that
killed us, you got one round.
All right, it's time again to thank our valued Patreon supporters.
