I thought of asking it, too.
I don't know much about it, I'll admit.
Wow.
Alright.
Come on, chaos hammer. Let's get inside.
From which side?
Some sort of witchcraft.
Exactly right.
Shit's about to get real.
I fucking knew it.
It needs some catching up.
We need to get to a library if we're going to learn more about what these things are.
Look, we do have a lot of questions for you.
I recognize that.
Oh my God, I did not even think of that.
Dorn rolled a fucking critical fail.
No!
Oh, shame!
Shame, shame, shame, shame. He's like standing over there's like this pile of shit, and Doran's like, it doesn't look like a very big pyre to me.
voice acting in the show. Thank you so much, Christopher. You are this week's MVP.
All right. Should we do it? Yeah. Let's play D&D.
Wah-hoo!
you see a scene of complete chaos inside of the tower as one dwarf just takes a bite of another dwarf's forearm and rips the muscle off then cut to chaos hammer running we hear his heartbeat pounding in his ears and he runs into a wardrobe and slams the door behind him
Then we see a maw opening up and we hear a fragment of Chaos Hammer screaming.
Then, slick, burgundy walls.
It's a cavern like Chaos Hammer mentioned.
And there's like a squelching noise.
We are in Chaos Hammer's.
point of view and he shakily gets to his feet like he's been deposited here it's wet all around him
and and strangely dark but like lit somehow and like he said this immense face looming up at him
from the other wall of the cavern this is like like 80.
feet away from him like it's a big ass room this ghastly white face with a huge mouth is moving as it slurps down
the bottom half of another dwarven body and as it finishes devouring the feet it yawns open again and then
darkness as you are awakened from this terrifying series of images that chaos hammer has obviously
recently experienced and you open your eyes to the reality of the world around you underneath
the safety of the canopy of leomin's tiny hut you see that chaos hammer's eyes have cleared
of their bloodshot nature and he is no longer weeping black tears seems that some kind of
infection has loosened its hold on him and he looks up at you in gratitude thank you
i am so sorry for what you have been through that cannot have been seeing your your friends and your
comrades, behaved that way and then being snatched away to wherever it was you were taken.
It seems unfair that now you should have to go forth and continue to fight, having been through
all that.
Would you mind if I shared that with everyone, if you would prefer to, but if you do not want
that burden as well, I can happily take it.
He nods solemnly at you and he says, I'm sure we are all carrying our own.
trials
um
hopefully
now we can all help
uh so we can
lessen the burden
and then tamil will
just explain to everyone
about uh what she saw
through chaos
hammer's eyes
oh boy
have you ever heard of anything like that
red, widet Doran
whim
that's it
I mean
that's the hunger
that boy was also accused
of eating
other people in his
towns, right?
He also had cannibalistic tendencies.
That's where that idea of the hunger
sort of creeped into my mind.
This is all part of
whatever shadow fell
is tainting the woods around this area,
causing terrible things.
Why is it leaking through?
I don't know much about it, I'll admit,
but I thought it was a completely separate
plane.
I didn't realize
Wim snaps her fingers
and then signs
didn't Mari say
she had a dream about something like this.
Yeah, that's right.
Mari had a vision
of the shadow fell
taking over Favroon
and it was us standing in its way.
But that was it.
That's right.
Is this an opportunity
where Witted could make a new
Arcana check on this subject material?
Yes.
I want to presume because I know
Now you have the missing piece.
Okay, so let me see.
Get it.
Come on.
Let's go.
All right.
29 in all.
That's how we tell a good story.
The highs and lows of D&D.
Unbelievable.
And I say, guys, listen, I'm over it.
I got a critical hit.
Nice.
Yeah.
Oh, that is so good.
Wow, 29.
Tasty, tasty, tasty lore.
I am this fantastic.
So I wouldn't say he's an expert in Planner Rifts or anything, but I'm definitely trying to figure out what is going on here.
He's the biggest expert in the party.
Absolutely.
So Witted starts at like very detective style has been walking around, shaking off the remains that he just saw in the state that Chaos Hammer was found in.
And he is, you know, taking a breather.
But it seems like starting to look around and put a mechanical hand.
up to the chin of the helmet, and he is thinking, it is clear, he's deep in thought.
He's starting to pace around.
And as he returns to the group, seeing an opportunity, he begins, well, let's start with
what we know.
It is not uncommoned for there to be what people call different terms in different cultures.
It could be a thinning of the veils.
It could be manifestation.
Platter convergence is the preferred nomenclature in the more academic, magic.
community, but these are not uncommon, especially when it comes to the Shadowfell.
Unfortunately, usually the Shadowfell being a realm of primarily emotion and primarily negative
emotion.
It is usually the first thing to seep through is emotion of some kind.
He's kind of looking at Chaos Hammer in the situation that he kind of went through.
And therefore, the manifestations can be very difficult to note until they are already at critical
levels. This, however, and he's like pacing back and forth like the guy
revealing the crime, this was intentional.
This seems very intentional. Can we say that the tiny hut has evolved so that
because this kind of like thing is, this kind of a like dissertation has been done before
and there's like a chalkboard on one of the walls.
Yes. Absolutely. We're inside the tiny.
Just come a lab. I'm drawing on the chalkboard. What a hundred percent.
And it's all, it doesn't make any sense.
I'm drawing lines.
Like, so this is a plate.
This is another plane.
And I just start drawing like ovals and everyone's like, well, what's the oval supposed to?
Oh, wait.
Well, okay.
All right.
Hold on.
What's the oval supposed to be?
I don't get it.
Yeah.
Hold on.
You said these things are naturally occurring.
But then you said that there's a reason that they might not be naturally occurring.
What are you trying to get at?
I don't get it.
I start saying so many numbers of like with this betty bad a portion spike.
making it these particular areas.
This is it, this would be, this would require spellcasting.
This would require primary spellcasting.
And I'm drawing like X's on the lines and stuff.
Hold on.
You're saying, no, no, you're saying someone's doing this.
You're saying this isn't just natural, plainer, whatever.
You're saying there's some force behind these attacks.
Like a good teacher, he turns with a smile and gestures with the chalk, like exactly right.
But Witted, from which side of the veil?
Well, that's where it gets interesting.
And he's, like, very excited.
I'm very excited that you asked that question, actually, Temeel.
Because statistically, it is difficult for me to determine.
I thought I'm asking it, too.
I just...
I'm sure you did, Red.
Yes, absolutely.
I'm sure it was occurring to all of you.
But...
Red's like sitting in criss-cross, applesauce.
He's like, I was going to ask him.
As soon as Witted turns around, Tumil smacks you on the arm.
The truth is, with the data we have right now, it is not easy to determine exactly from what side the breach is coming from.
Now, statistically, not to be in any way prejudiced against the Shadowfell, but there is a high number of beings in the Shadowfell that for a variety of reasons would like to get out, some that would be involving violence directed at people of the material played, and some that have genuine reasons.
to want to get out of the plaintiff shadow, but it is just as likely that it is somewhat on our side bringing their energy through.
Well, look, and Red stands up and sort of walks next to Witted.
This isn't our first foray into the shadow fell either.
We had a previous party member that obviously fell to a shadow creature, but even before that, he was tempted by a being of the shadow fell.
a woman who called herself Raelle.
She came to one of us in this party
and tried to coax him.
Good memory, Red.
I guess all I mean to say is
some pieces are starting to fall into place.
This isn't just a thinning of the veils.
This isn't just about anyone.
This clearly,
between Mari's vision and our pre-year-old.
previous party members having been recruited, for lack of a better term, I think this is a task
that is beginning to fall squarely on our shoulders as well.
Well, I seem to, a lot of this is making me, a lot of memories come around in my brain,
you know, especially when you say the planar division being thinner or whatever you said
there with it. I mean, it seems like, it seems like we've had this conversation before and it
And it seemed to me, and he turns to kind of Red, who was just sort of saying similar,
maybe this has something to do with the ordaining and some sort of witchcraft
that they're trying to bring something from the other worlds here.
So you think this Rael is somehow consulting with the Giants?
I don't think so.
Maybe not this same person.
It doesn't feel connected in a way.
It seems, it just, it seems too, too coincidental.
That's my thinking, Tamil.
Very coincident.
I don't think it's a coincidence, but I don't think they're related.
If I can explain, and Red walks up to the chalkboard.
Red tries to take the chalk from with his hand.
Well, that's not.
But then doesn't.
Whatever, I don't need it.
And instead he just sort of rubs his finger through the chalk that's already there.
I think this giant threat, Red, like, makes really terrible scratches, like, scribbles.
That's supposed to.
I think, we don't need this anymore.
He, like, braces like an equation.
Oh, well, that's, that was math, but okay.
Here, here, this X is the giant threat.
And this X, scratching my head, like, your thing doesn't make sense.
It's way simpler.
I think the giant threat is causing a rift across all of these people and all of these places.
And I think whatever might be causing the shadow to slip through might be using that as either a distraction
or using it as an opportunity where forces are diverted to places like silvery moon.
When one eye is watching the left hand, and Red twiddles his left hand fingers,
you don't know what the right hand is doing, and he pulls out his right hand,
and he's taken the chalk from Witted's hand without him knowing.
Witted is very surprised.
Then he tosses it back to Witted and sits down.
General Chaos Hammer says,
So what you're saying is there's another equally dangerous threat.
to Phyroon brewing right under our noses.
I think someone is taking advantage of the giant threat
to have something potentially more dangerous
roiling under the surface, yes.
An even giant or threat.
Could it be that there is some sort of event that is happening
that is allowing, that causes the reordining
and this thing of the veil,
like the alignment of planets, Cicidji,
Or what is it that makes you think that it is specifically the giant threat that is providing cover
as opposed to both of these being caused by some other larger event?
It's entirely possible.
A crumbling of the times.
You know, there does seem to be something behind all of this.
Some unspoken person in a mask at the top of all of this.
But it seems like a lot to coordinate.
I don't know.
I wasn't even actually thinking that there was a single individual or even an organization that was somehow orchestrating multiple catastrophic events.
More that just something that is maybe even beyond our ken is allowing these things to happen, which is only worrying because if there are two, there can be more.
Mm-hmm.
In Mari's vision, it was four shapeless figures standing against the hoard of the shadow fell.
stopping it now she she was intimidated by that and that caused her to leave but i think that
vision was true and i do think it falls upon us to stop this and i think if the two were caused by
the same source her vision would have been more interconnected to what we are currently dealing with
that's about as good as i can can hope for i suppose yes yeah yeah she was pretty uh
open to that sort of
what's the word
I'm looking for?
Persuasion
of the
mythical minds
maybe it just takes
a certain type of personality
to be able to
have those nightmares or dreams
strange
well I mean I've been having dreams myself
over the past few months
I've been waking up with dreams of
salt air on my fur
and visions
that
that seemed strange, purple jagged rocks
and people sacrificing infants to the ocean.
Doran knows all about them, but they haven't happened in a few weeks.
Chaos Hammer has, like, taken a seat on one of the little, like, dining chairs around the table where we all eat our dinner.
And he's like, so you've been to Iron Slag then?
and what news of the Duke Zalto?
Mm.
Oh, hmm.
Well, it might need some catching up.
And I think as we recount the stories of going to Iron Slag,
Doran sort of helps Chaos Hammer sort of clean up a bit,
wiping the crap off his like shoulders and stuff,
helping him kind of gather up armor from some of the bodies on the floor, you know?
Yeah.
re-equip him.
I mean, if you're interested in the bodies,
we can definitely talk about those.
I think he would be probably interested
in eventually giving them proper rights.
Yeah, Doran is too, for sure.
At this stage, it's more like,
let's get your armor back and sorted
and make sure that if something comes out of the blue here,
were ready so meta burning the bodies that they found was correlated causation to the fog was that
just circumstantial or can we deduce that i don't want to repeat problems so what he told you was
that night question mark he thinks maybe four days ago or something around there the fog came out of
the woods, and then they were beset by these creatures.
Yeah.
They defeated them because they're badass dwarven warriors.
They burned their bodies.
He pointed, you know, back beyond the tower, and he said, if you guys want to go check
them out, they're just over there.
There's a big pyre.
And then they figured, like, shit's done with the next night, fog came back.
Mm-hmm.
But no creatures in it.
No creatures in it.
That was what infected them with cannibalistic desires.
and also some monster ate chaos hammer.
Okay, but more or less, we feel like the burnt bodies weren't really related.
It didn't release something.
That's what I gathered too.
Spores.
Well, I don't know.
There's so much unknown, right?
Yeah.
Yeah.
Would anyone like to, I'm curious about those bodies,
just to poke through a little and see if there's anything worth discovering there.
Yep.
Me too.
I'll come with you.
Nick
So listen
Last time we were playing
Return to Moria
I'm gonna loot everything
Nick's like every monster
we kill from now on
I'm
Hang on
Okay I did say that
I did say that
You did
But also
Now we've mentioned the bodies
If you want to check him out
You can
You know when the DM does that thing
I mean they're just there
No I love it
Among other things
But also those are there
So that was what I was just fighting to
But now I am embarrassed
That I did say
I was gonna loot everything
No no it's great
There are four scrolls of heel modern.
I fucking knew it.
I loot chaos,
Amar while he's still fucking alive.
Just go through his pines.
Yeah.
Wim picks up a piece of chalk and surreptitiously starts, like,
drawing comic book versions of all of us as you guys go on about your more adult concerns.
So Doran and Temeel, the two of you wanted to go over and take a look at these monster.
bodies?
Yeah, the, at the pyre, the ones that they had burned.
The monster bodies, I think...
I hate to be a stickler for the rules.
Sure.
But I think once you've cast Liam and Tiny Hut, you need to stay inside.
If you leave, it disappears.
Oh, if I leave.
Yes, but I think you as the castor are stuck inside.
Yeah, so I got to stay inside.
Would anyone like to go check out the...
Would anyone like to go see the bodies?
Tim's got a big, oh my gosh, this.
I didn't know that.
That's pretty cool.
to use against players.
So, Temeel's grounded
for the next little bit.
Well, look, Wim and Witted
and I can head inside the tower and stop poking
around if it makes sense to split the potty.
Well... Yes, we don't have to... We do not have to...
We don't have to stay. We don't have to bed down
for the night. Doren sort of turns
to Nurgrel. Are you
good enough to walk around?
Yeah. He nods.
Thanks to the administrations
of your friend here.
What is your name?
I'm Timmy.
Red, what's, no, I'm just kidding.
I know, please leave that in.
I just wish you read, like, leaning into the frame.
You told me.
You met me twice before.
My name is Tamil, and this is Witted.
Thank you for saving me.
It was the least we could do.
And Dorn would not have less passed through here
without ensuring that you were safe.
Look, we do have a lot of questions for you, though.
So why don't we head inside?
Witted Wim and I will talk to Chaos Hammer
while you to do what you are going to do.
Yes, perhaps we should move.
I am having terrible visions now of a fire giant
who has been infected by this hunger, monstrous.
Oh, geez.
And much harder to defeat, I think, than this encounter.
Or a fog rolling in.
Let's not wait too long, then.
Witted women and I will question Chaos Hammer.
Inspiration for Nick.
Sorry, apropos of nothing.
I have inspiration.
You have, well then.
I would like to donate it.
Then I'm taking your inspiration.
Oh, that's okay.
You don't get any.
That's fine.
No, I'll take the shout out.
Yeah.
Does anyone not have inspiration right now?
Well, technically we got an inspiration for you and me.
Oh, yeah.
You guys have a shared one.
So you can keep that and I'll take, you keep the, whatever.
We'll both end up with one.
Perfect. The system works. Let's go.
Yeah, that is a very logical concern.
Idea that you gave Joe.
I promise you?
I've been thinking about this for quite a topic.
When Tamil says that, there's a moment where ridd its whole helmet just whips around,
there's a long pause.
And then that clink, clink, clink, clink, clink as the helmet comes up so he can put his hand of steel to his far head
with the complete like, oh my God, I did not even think of that, like, look on his face.
There are many inhabitants, and he's looking in the direction of the bodies of the shadow fell.
There are the dark legs.
There are the Shadarkai.
There are whole cities in that realm.
These things are not any of those.
I've heard of creatures called sorrow sward, but I only came across them in one magical text.
We need to get to a library if we're going to learn more about what these things are.
Okay, look, I don't want to be that guy.
But realistically, it goes, silvery moon, and then, honestly, and then a decision.
Once the Vonendod and Silvery Moon and the fire giants are dealt with,
then the four of us need to really have a talk about what the hell we want to tackle next.
Because between the shadow fell leaking through and the giant threat continuing,
We've got our plate full, but I think we need to prioritize.
Eat the elephant one bite at a time.
We've sent all those letters back in Dead Snows,
which hopefully have reached the appropriate people by now.
And if all went well and our contacts are as noble as they were when we first met them,
they are heading there to support Silvery Moon in that final assault against the giants.
So long as we take down the Von and Dodd,
then hopefully enough people survive to tell our tale.
After that, over a nice drink-in-water,
deep, I promise that we can decide whether we want to tackle the shadow fell threat next or
continue on the giant threat. But for now, we got to just take what's coming at us.
I don't disagree with your priorities.
I feel like Doran looks out sort of in the direction of the Von and Dodd and sort of envisions
the various fog they might encounter between themselves and the Vaughn and Dodd.
Yeah. And I guess getting to the Vaughn and Dodd is going to be
a challenge on its own, shutting it down.
I don't think we should spend too much time here.
Why don't you guys check the bodies?
We'll talk to Chaos Hammer.
Right.
Come on, Chaos Hammer. Let's get inside.
Cool.
We split the party.
Wim, Red, and Witted.
You accompany General Chaos Hammer into the safety of the tower
as Timil and Dorin make their way around back
to where the pyre of bodies.
is here have a seat and red pulls over a dwarven stool made of stone
god this is heavy all right just take some two minutes
chaos hammer look we are here for the von and dod obviously we got your message we know
that it was waylaid but we need to take that thing down and I need to learn everything that
you've learned over the past little while about that von and dod anything that you think
would be important.
Meanwhile, behind the tower.
Doran is a bit embarrassed that this dwarven army general
needed the help of someone, anyone.
So as they're sort of leaving the party,
Doran turns to Timiel.
Thanks for your help.
Again, your magic.
It still amazes me the way magic users can use magic
the way they do.
I'm sure you wouldn't have survived
if it was just me that came upon him.
I think that that type of speculation
does not yield any virtue or usefulness,
so I think everything that we have done so far
is a team effort.
Fair enough.
Either way, thank you.
Of course.
So, I'm thinking maybe we could try
and, while we're, you know,
walking around here,
looking through things, we could try and put the bodies of the dwarves over that away
and maybe just leave the other carcasses around where they are.
I don't really want to touch them.
Are there specific rights or something that we could do for the dwarves?
Well, there are rituals, but no, I mean, I'm not an overly religious dwarf following
that necessarily all the rituals that go in with the death ritual.
and whatnot.
I don't think many of these warriors would care much either.
They just want their bodies to be placed in the ground.
I see.
Perhaps we can examine the pyre first.
It's a great idea.
Let's go see you.
What damage they did.
Yeah.
So behind the wall of the tower,
you come upon a pyre of sorts.
Logs that were freshly chopped from the forest all around were obviously piled underneath these carcasses and then set ablaze by the dwarves.
The corpses are well burned, and that's as much as I will give you without some additional Dungeons and Dragons dice roll.
Sure.
What would you like to investigate?
Yeah, I think Tamil would first try to find some sort of, if there's like a, like a stick or anything that you could use to start to sort through the ashes, just to kind of like push ash around to uncover things that are still solid.
Yeah.
Any good fire investigation begins with a poking stick.
You got to poke.
You got to poke them ashes.
You got to find a good one, though.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Roll investigation for me, please.
We'll find out how good of a poking stick you find.
I'm going to go ahead.
Tamil, before she does, she picks up this stick.
She holds it in her hands, and then her eyes closed for a moment,
and she whispers under her breath, something that you can't hear.
And I'm really quickly going to cast enhanceability on myself for Fox's cunning so I can do this with advantage.
Yes.
Nice.
What she says on her breath is, please make me fucking awesome.
Come on, come on, make me fucking awesome.
Well, prayer's not answered.
The higher of those two was an eight.
Bummer.
Okay.
Tamil, the poking stick you find is subpar.
Shit.
That's the stick's fault.
That's right.
Blame the equipment.
You are unable to find any real substantial bit of monster,
but through your investigation, you're able to determine that, yeah, this fire was
probably set about four days ago there's some some rain maybe has fallen on the ash here it's
blown away so you find some over just to the the north of the pile um but nothing is really getting
peace together in your mind doran did you want to do yeah i do some poking um and maybe i could just
use straight up perception to see i'll be honest what i'm looking at
is where bodies would have been placed on the on the pyre so that anything that would have
fallen from the birding bodies like he's going to rummage around underneath that in the ashes
oh you're looking for like stuff yeah he's looting see okay I am for once I'm starting to
yeah yeah sure I'm gonna use oh I have to use inspiration before I roll right yeah yeah yeah you do
You got this
Doren's like
You're gonna burn a lucky?
Oh burn a lucky
I'm not using Lucky on this
What'd you get?
Would you get?
Would you roll?
Doran rolled a fucking critical fail.
No!
Shame!
He's like standing over there's like this
pile of shit
And Doran's like
It doesn't look like a very big pyre to me.
Yeah, you're overly concerned with
how shoddy the craftsmanship of the pyre
was that you can't get your
head in the game too well.
What the hell's going on here?
This looks like it was built by a child.
Oh, God.
They've got all the small twigs over there.
Yeah, yeah.
You ask warriors to build a fire.
Can I make either a nature check or an arcana check to see if the burned material
feels either natural terrestrial of this world or it has some sort of either strange
residue or some other kind of otherness that could give us a clue as to the nature of these
things. Yeah, specifically making a nature role. Okay. You can, you can mess with pieces.
Okay, I'm going to mess with pieces, and this is another intelligence check so I can do it with
advantage. Oh, thank God. It was 21 for the first role. It was flirting with a one. Yeah, so 21.
Mm-hmm. Okay, Nick.
accompanied by your subpar poking stick you managed to find like a hard piece and at first you're
like a bone probably but no it's this like long piece of kindness material something that you've
never run across in this terrestrial realm um between the
the char marks in it, you see that it is like almost ridged on one side, kind of the way that
like a lobster claw is, but desperately sharp. This is probably some kind of stabbing or
swiping weapon, but is natural to a creature. Again, very badly damaged. You can see a place
where maybe it was hacked by an axe.
There's like a chop mark,
but like, you know, it's charred all over the place.
From your assessment of this hard bit
that you trawled out of the ashes,
this is nothing you've seen before on any creature.
But it lines up with the scyth-like appendages
that Chaos Hammer was describing on some of the...
Yes. And in fact...
He said it shot them too.
Yes.
Use like a harpoon, I believe.
believe he said. And
some of the creatures
that Witted briefly mentioned
sounded like
maybe that kind of flavor.
Tamil is going to show
Doran this thing, but then she's also going to take some
cloth out of her pack, wrap it
so that the sharp edge is a little protected, and then she's
going to bring it with her. She'll carry
it back to meet with the other people.
Yeah. Doran, you managed to find a silver
piece. Ah, one silver piece.
And a retainer.
Well, when Timil showed me this, this like,
it said it's like crustacean crust, right, claw.
That's like my closest analogy, but it's definitely not that.
It's like the parts of it that aren't all charred from the funeral pyre
are like a glistening, like slate gray color.
Well, I mean, I'm going to roll.
Do you mind if I roll for it and see if I recognize anything here?
Roll it.
What's this in nature maybe?
Yeah, you can roll in nature.
That's a straight up 17.
Nice.
That's a good roll.
Yeah, Doran, there's like a glimmer in your memory,
and you recall being punctured by one of these weapons, particularly.
I do.
Yeah.
Yeah.
Or you or Kraloth or Red, somebody got got pretty good by one of these guys once.
Oh, that thing.
I recognize that.
That was the last time we met up with the shadow film.
They can shoot.
Those things shoot.
I remember being pierced by that.
Come on, let's go rejoin the others.
Yeah.
And they walk back into the tower.
Red sort of nods to chaos hammer and stands up.
Yeah, okay.
Thank you for all that.
And he sees Tamil and Doran walk in
and sees the wrapped piece of chitonous harpoon
and recognizes it instantly.
even though it's just peaking out a little bit.
I remember Doran got hit with one of those.
Look, shit's about to get real.
Chaos Hammer filled us in on everything,
and the Vonneddard isn't far from here,
but we need to move quick.
It seems like it's almost ready to start moving again.
All right, it's time again to thank our valued Patreon supporters.
