Give it a turn, would you ready?
Ask her if she's single.
Stop it, stop it.
No.
Not if we can stop it.
How far away are we?
No battle plans, no.
You are so poofy right now.
This is your moment.
Look, look around.
Children are dying as we sit here.
I suppose I could.
Look at you go.
You're a big strong boy.
Look at the type of destruction we can make.
We have our machinations.
When you have a suit of armor, don't leave it abandoned.
That's my rule.
It ends.
Jeez.
Witted, I think it's time to kick some ass.
Welcome back to Dishame.
This is Season 2, Episode 193, God in the Machine.
MVP this week is Colt Walker, who just started the series but said that Dice Shame is getting them through the bathroom renno from hell.
Thank you so much, Colt.
Hope you're still enjoying by the time you read this.
You're this week's MVP.
All right, should we play some D&D?
Yeah, let's do it.
Woo!
So you're all standing inside of the Von and Dodd, and after reactivating all these colored prisms, you hear a voice asking for the name of the new pilot.
Oh, baby, what?
Whoa!
And he's looking around.
He heard new pilot, and he's very excited right now.
Pilot, oh, baby, what?
Present to Arbiter for authentication.
Witted is humiliated.
No, no, no, wait, no, wait, hold on, hold on.
He takes one deep breath.
Who is it that I am speaking to?
You address Najadras.
Present to the head for pilot authentication.
Nehedrus.
I, my pilot identification name redesignate.
Please.
My name is Wittedwig Wigwigwai.
Wormer.
Name, redesignation.
Witted Wigwammer.
And it is a pleasure to meet you.
Red will move to the elevator slowly.
I think she's up here, bud.
Come on, everyone.
We will be seeing you in person soon.
What the hell does an in-person Von Endoddud look like, Red says,
to Timil with wide eyes?
We're about to find out, I think.
Yeah, I beat you to the red crystal.
Is there anything else I should ask her before he's looking shyly between the orb and his team?
Ask her if she's single.
Stop it, stop it.
Autopilot engaging in one minute.
Oh, let's get to the head.
Oh, let's go.
How do we turn this elevator on?
Elevator, go!
For such a complicated-looking elevator, it is quite simple.
once you step on the elevator, like a weighted platform sort of engages this control panel that reveals itself from behind a sheet of sliding metal.
So, like as you step on the control, like reveals itself.
And much like the simple red push button that you'd seen in the earlier level, it's exposed to you.
And it just seems like it's a push to go up kind of vibe.
I got this one, guys.
Don't worry, Red says and misses the button.
Give it a turn, would you read?
He tries to turn it.
Temeel will sidle up to Witted and just ask,
this is it.
Are you ready?
I wasn't necessarily sure that there would be intelligence,
but I hadn't ruled that out as a possibility.
I don't think I can ever be ready for this,
but I'm as ready as I'll ever be.
The platform ascends smoothly through the ceiling
where another sheet of metal slides aside
to admit you into the next level of the Vonendod, its chest.
Oh, where the hell's head?
Looks kind of empty, eh?
In this next level, you are, so the elevator platform is admitted access to a small, like,
ante room.
There is another catwalk, and alarmingly, there is a huge 20-foot-wide door
that seems to be giving off a tremendous amount of heat.
It is glowing, terrifying kind of orangey color.
It looks like maybe just a metal door.
And definitely you feel the heat coming off of it from where you stand.
Don't lean against that wall.
Quite a fiery love in that one.
On the opposite side of the catwalk, there is another room.
There is a control sphere in the center of this room and several metal conduits.
It seems pretty dangerous to be in this room as well.
There are organic sheaths covering these conduits and lightning is arcing sort of between the entry and exit points of each of these conduits on the walls.
Moving farther west in the room, you see that there is a door.
that is closed, a small relatively door, and then just north of that, a staircase leading up
ostensibly to the head. And what is directly across from us? It's like some map doodily-do that I
didn't bother to describe or make note of my notes. Sorry, sure. Yep, great. No, that's good. Observe it.
Some office art. It's a nothing. Hey, Joe. Yeah, it's, there's like a little, like a plant
Little potted plant.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Nice.
That's right.
It's a placard.
It's definitely dead because of the immense amount of heat that is, like, coming off of the door.
But someone wanted to pretty up the place.
Sure.
Joe, based on kind of what we know about where we've been in the legs, in the kind of like hip region and now the chest.
Do we have a sense of the fiery door what that might lead to in terms of positioning on the Von and Dodd's body?
like a heart area?
Really, really?
Okay.
Waiter, did you say that it might be the spirit or something of a fire giant that powers this thing?
It is possible that what powers this is the residual memories,
or possesses the residual memories of a fire giant, and this might identify as one, yes.
All right.
Autopilot engaging in 30 seconds.
present to Arbiter in the head
to gain access to control orb.
We don't have much time.
Sounds like we should hurry.
Yeah.
Let's hoff it.
You first would it into the electric room.
Yeah, I would be flying full speed.
I really want to stop to sketch the office plan.
But like the legends were true.
I'll come back to this later.
But I'd just kind of fly through this room.
Yeah, as you move through the room,
the electricity is like causing your hair to stand on it.
Is it arcing off a static like a, like a Tesla coil?
Yeah.
Oh, that's cool.
I love that.
Yeah, it's actually catching on the tip of your weapon and giving you like a little charge here and trying to like redirect that energy.
And Red's fur is all just fuzzy.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
You are so poofy right now.
Rev, you look great.
I'm just like some poofy.
Uh-huh.
You guys, you look weird too, right?
It's not just me.
We all, yes, all of us look weird.
I just all my hair standing on end.
All dorn.
Scraglis. No, Doran is so greasy
All of his hair doesn't move. He's like, oh, it's
affecting me too. And we're like, yeah.
You just see the little like split ends
slightly wobbling. It's like, whoa.
It's brutal, split ends.
I guess a Dwarven
beard wouldn't. That's actually really
messed up of me to say, yeah.
You come to the top of the stairs
and you find yourselves in front
of a closed door.
Oh, God damn it.
Just open it.
This doesn't seem to react to an ordinary locking mechanism.
This requires something special...
You mean like a special code?
Oh! Oh!
I have more jerky!
Look, I got more jerky, guys.
I thought I had my last piece, but I know my last piece.
What else do you have in the bag?
Wim signs the key, the key.
Oh, I have a key.
I have a key, too.
Here, here, here.
And Red Hands, the real key to win it.
Here, I think you can be trusted.
I mean, here's the key.
It was kind of like a rod shape he is using this to access the door.
I'm picturing the scene from Beetlejuice.
Yeah.
Like putting the skeleton key in it.
Yeah.
And the rod like pushes it.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Sliding the key home into its lock, you open the door and find yourselves in the Vonneddod's head.
What?
Whoa.
What?
The final level of the interior of the Von and Dodd seems to be comprised of a single room.
On the far side, a platform with a raised dais appears to be where the final control orb would be seated,
though it is conspicuously missing.
On the rear wall, dozens of copper-colored pipes snake vertically carrying who knows what fluids to their destination.
Twin hallways lead toward the front of the face.
and between them, circled by five enormous opals set into the floor and fed by a flurry of pipes reminiscent of rays of light, a figure is mounted on the wall.
This figure is larger than you, though not giant-sized.
She's formed from oxidized copper, perhaps, colored both orange-red and teal in places.
There are deep grooves running through the plains of her face.
across her high bald forehead and over the bridge of her nose,
cutting down her cheeks and horizontally through both sides of her lips.
Her eyes are deep and alien and piercing.
Her neck protrudes from a collar of metal,
and her torso is covered by thick plates,
supporting and securing her to the wall.
Her head swivels to regard you.
It's metal expression unchanging.
Pilot Witted, Wigwalmer, present yourself for authentication.
Witted is in awe at this point.
Whatever analytical resolve he had is like falling before this almost religious level of fervor that he has.
More wonder, I think, at the discovery is what's overwhelming him than anything, that indeed there is not only an intelligence,
a identity, a personality, but this being who now stands before him.
He just slowly floats forward and tries to say the word, but it's almost coming out as a whisper, and then he repeats it.
Authenticating. Authenticating.
Authentication complete.
Query, what are your intended battle plans?
I glance back at the other's none.
No battle plans. No, there shouldn't be any...
Well, well, hold on, not none.
Oh.
CREY, do you need assistance developing combat strategy?
Hold on, wait it. Tell her, if we're landing in Silvery Moon,
we don't know the size of the force that Salto has.
There may be something to be said about temporarily using it.
Only temporarily, Red shoots a look to Temeel.
And also, first things first.
perhaps a strategy developed
if some of the controls
have been compromised by outside
combatants, how do we rest
control from them? And she
kind of like gestures at the missing orb.
We'll let you talk. But you've got this,
Witted, you've got this. You've got this.
You've got this. You've got it.
Let's go.
You're so great.
A little...
It's so cute. It's what you've been waiting for.
It kind of waves his hands like this.
Priority. Priority
Before battle plans
are discussed further is the compromised issue from within.
Please analyze all control orbs and designate which control they fall under.
Processing.
Fire giant Duke Zoltow is the last pilot registered with the arbiter.
Query, would you like to review his stated protocols?
Say yes.
Yes.
Protocol 1. Control access to the Vonnedad is to be granted through the control orb in Duke Zolto's possession.
Protocol 2. Travel from iron slag to the city known as Silvery Moon.
Protocol 3. Fire giants and allied forces are exempt from offensive maneuvers.
Destroy all other life.
Protocol 4.
Destroy all non-allied buildings, vehicles, and monuments.
Protocol 5.
Away further command.
Oh, my God.
This thing is going to level silvery moon.
Well, not if we can stop it.
We're with Witted and charged now.
Can protocols be altered from this position?
Affirmative.
Oh.
Should I wipe protocols before this goes any further?
I don't know, I guess. Maybe.
Think you should.
Look, we don't know what's happening outside right now.
We could already be arriving at Silver Moot any minute.
As your pilot, will you allow me to wipe all current protocols?
Affirmative.
Ask what we are.
Where is the current location of the voted dot?
Accessing viewing stones.
Yes, please.
The five opals laid into the floor become projections of the space around the Vonidod, above, below, below, left, right, and what the face is looking at.
Mm-hmm, mm-hmm.
And using these projections, you are able to see something terrible.
Ooh.
The city of Silvery Moon is hoving into view and is clearly in trouble.
You see an impressive force of giants encircling the northern perimeter of the city and thick plumes of smoke streaming upwards from fires burning within.
You are minutes away from touchdown.
It would seem that the walls have already been breached.
Oh, gods.
Wipe the protocols.
Wipe the protocols.
No, no.
adjust the protocols.
Hold in position.
It takes another deep breath to focus himself.
He's got both Temeel and Red, telling him what to do.
He says, Najadras, wipe all protocols, cut velocity and momentum to zero.
Stop above the city.
Await further orders.
Affirmative.
And like, if he sees the Vonundad doing this, he'll almost be like the NASA, like, falling back in the seat.
like, yeah.
Yeah.
Everyone, you feel your internal organs, like, shift as the velocity of the Von and Dodd, like,
halts.
You had been so used to traveling forward at speed that now it feels like almost seasick for a
second as you begin to just hover slowly forward.
But now we're far away.
We needed to keep going and adjust the protocols to attack the giants.
How far away are we, Najida?
10 miles.
They're still being attacked with it
You need to get her there
And you need to help the people of Silverymon
At the speed we were going
We could get there quickly
If that's what we want
But we don't know
What the weapon systems on
This thing are capable of
And what the collateral damage would look like
We don't know if fire giants
Are even susceptible to its attacks
This is
This is not how I wanted
This is not how this was supposed to
I was it supposed to
Quarry
What is your primary?
Weid just stares a thousand yards stair.
Protect the city of Silvery Moon. Witted. The Adorn sort of comes up behind him.
Take a deep breath. This is your moment. Look. Look around you. You have to take it in.
This is where you want it to be. And whose name is the Vonendot responding to right now?
Hmm. We can use the powers of Vonondod to protect Silvery Moon. Let's protect Silvery Moon. Let's protect Silvery Moon.
Moon, from, from the giants, from any attacks.
And at this point, Doreen kind of looks around and kind of nods at Tameel and Red,
in sort of looking for that little bit of input, I guess.
Yeah, look, I, I, it's been no secret that I don't trust using this thing,
especially after today, but for today, sitting on something this powerful and watching people
die is morally wrong.
We need to use it while we can.
I mean, it seems as though we don't have a choice, though it doesn't.
sit right. Widdidd, can you cut off control from Duke Zolto's orb so that he cannot
weasel his way back in and change any of the work that we have done here?
Well, it shouldn't be right now, right? You deleted the protocol that said he was the pilot.
It's unclear whether he can establish new protocols.
Dajadras, is this something that Zaltow could do? He could give you new orders from where he currently has an orb?
Current pilot authentication is Witted Wigwalmer.
No, he would have to enter and throw those switches again.
I think he got this thing with it.
We do.
Furthermore, if we can get there and set this Vonendat up to attack,
we can get out there and fight in the battle as well
so long as you have a orb like Zalto does.
All right, perhaps there is a compromise to be reached here.
Yes, what if the new protocols, the new directives are protect,
protect the life of the citizens of Silver Moon, its buildings, its walls.
We do not have to give an attack order.
I mean, the dwarves are coming.
fighting soon. They can take out the giants, right?
Look at those giants to me. Look at them. And red gestures to the image below.
A battalion of trolls is gathered near the banks of the Ralvan River, and you watch as they
gain access to the city through a pile of rubble. Several catapult-style war machines are launching
a barrage of stones against the walls of Silvery Moon. And as you watch, one of the gates falls.
Children are dying as we sit here talking about this.
This thing needs to be there now.
And those giants are our enemy.
No matter how we slice it.
Tamil will turn to Wittard.
She'll just heave a big sigh and she'll say,
I trust you, whatever you think is right, Wittitt.
He looks down at where he is standing
and then up at the group,
not even looking at the great automaton
who has been like consuming.
his attention all this time. And he says, you know, you know, I didn't want to use this as a weapon.
I wanted to study it. But those are my people, too. And I think I'm starting to realize that.
And if I, if you have my back, I think I can get this thing to work. And we can put a stop to this now.
Witted, I think it's time to kick some ass.
He steps forward up right before Najidras,
and he starts to rattle off words very quickly to this computer entity.
And what you realize insofar as you can parse any of what he's saying,
is he's setting up macros kind of.
Anytime I use this phrase, V indicates velocity,
any numbers divide by two and accelerate and assume no momentum change.
Anytime I say this, this is attack codes.
I'm setting up like the A1, A1, like I can start rattling off like very quick commands to Najidras
and she'll be able to like parse and interpret them much more quickly.
Devonadat was underutilized by Zalto.
He was not efficiently using his coding problem.
He didn't even have this cooling system attached.
Oh, I got to fix it.
It's like a child playing with a thousand dollar computer.
He does start saying things like, by the way, get the coolant problem fixed.
here's how you would solve.
He starts rattling up like,
when you have a chance,
fix that.
He was underutilizing that
and like the cooling system
should be coursing through these.
You were playing Minecraft on this thing.
You got to be like,
and would somebody take care of those Beatles?
And Najidras is responding
to this level of instruction.
And with your commands,
we begin to what?
Designate fire giants.
As new enemies.
And allies of fire giants.
And allies.
They've got trolls down there.
Engage.
Affirmative.
As the arbiter is receiving your commands,
witted, and interpreting your intentions,
there is a moment where the head regards you quizzically and says,
almost out of nowhere.
Query, state the author of your armor.
The helmet slides back.
That would be myself.
We did with War.
Correct.
I am Najadras.
It is a pleasure to work by your side, Najadras.
He's doing this while typing in his armor kind of and like clearly like working and stuff.
But it is also very clear this conversation has his full attention despite the fact that he is like getting this all synced up as it were, hardware-wise and software-wise.
It has been some time since I have been in the presence of an author.
Witted is letting out an authentic laugh that we have never heard before.
And it doesn't like go on long, but he almost becomes breathless.
I was just thinking the same thing.
And he's just back to click, click, click, click, c.
Red says to Temeel, I think I've gotten an authentic laugh from him before, but whatever.
I mean, listen, they're viving.
I think we should just let it happen.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, they're vibing for now, but don't forget, ultimately.
We need to shut this thing down, and this makes it a hell of a lot more complicated.
True.
Only until we have to remind.
What are you doing here?
Doren, where did you come from?
I was saying it's to me.
We have our machinations.
You didn't realize I was standing here.
Yes.
General Chaos Hammer actually blows up the stairs at this.
point. He is super
duper out of breath and he's like
what's going on? I was waiting for the signal down there.
Yes, we are at Silvery Moon. Widdid is in
he's in control of the Von and Dodd and we are
beginning our descent I suppose into the fray.
Amazing. Excellent work.
And he takes up a position behind you, Witted, where he can see
through these viewing stones.
Witted tries to locate a spinny, like, office chair with wheels kind of situation you can get into.
He's officially upgrading to operator now.
Fabulous.
Yeah, yeah.
You've got, like, rolly chair action on Bessie where you can kind of like...
Oh, yeah, that's right.
Sorry, I just reconstitute Bessie a little bit for wheels.
That's all.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Perfect.
Fabulous.
I picture you're kind of like leaning back rolling around this big room.
Or it's the little spider-leg steampunk chair, yeah.
Oh, gosh.
Mm-hmm.
We swoop down on silvery moon,
and the Von and Dodd takes up a tactical position
to the north of the city
where the majority of the giant forces seem to be gathered.
And she says,
Confirm engagement.
He hesitates.
Your family's in this city, with it.
Affirmative.
Do it.
It has been many years since the city of Silvery Moon has seen battle on her doorstep.
Even longer since invaders washed her streets with the blood of her citizens.
Captain Sidiri Handler of Waterdeep jogs through a residential corridor toward the wall
where she can hear calls for aid, bleeding freely from a wound high on her cheekbone.
A squadron of her soldiers follow her in loose formation.
Weary from hours of fighting, but too well trained to fall even a step behind.
From the sounds of things, the Northgate is falling.
As the captain rounds the edge of the building, a scene of chaos comes into view.
Spellguard mages stand on top of the parapets, focusing their arcane energies on protecting the wall.
One of them takes an arrow to the chest and falls dead before he hits the ground.
The rubble piled against the gate shutters with a terrible impact from a battering ramp,
splintering open to reveal the hordes just outside. Elves in shining armor holding longswords
stand ready to receive the intruders, and Captain Hanler turns to her soldiers to bark orders
when the building beside them explodes. Her ears ringing in ballast and blinking away
grime. She lets her eyes focus on the clouds overhead as she comes to her senses, just as an enormous
metal construct begins to descend on the city. Its form grows larger and larger, far larger than any
giant, and her blood runs to ice in her veins when she desperately finds her spear, her second
in command's dead face, her courage, her voice. She screams, Rally! Raleigh to me! We fall back to the
cathedral! Just as the Von and Dodd's ruby-colored eyes flare to life in the sky above.
Back in the Vonad
There is a bright flash of red light
As the twin rubies that make the Vonidod's eyes
Come to life
And fucking laser beams shoot out
And hit the ground with a sizable explosion
You get on that one, Doran!
I love that red and Doran, like get in them
like Luke.
Oh, that's fun.
I got one.
I got one.
Don't get cocky, kid.
Yeah.
As you watch,
this laser fire
just lances the ground
and cuts through hordes.
Doran sort of hollers over to red.
It doesn't make any sense
for us to get out of this thing.
Look at the type of destruction
we can make.
You and I on the ground
are just going to, we're going to do a little
Italy damage compared to this thing.
Yeah, maybe, but look, and Red sort of runs back
to one of the mirrors. He's like, that family over there
needs help, not just a laser.
They need help. They ran into that building, and
them over there, look. And Red started like
pointing out little skirmishes that are
happening throughout the city and the battlefield out front.
I don't know.
And they have no idea what's going on, directing,
helping with people fleeing and trying to
seek safety. Surely
there is more that we could be doing than standing here
watching fire giants burn.
Witted, the Vaughan and Dot is more or less on autopilot, right?
If you take one of these orbs, we can move down to the battlefield, can't we?
I suppose I could.
I won't be able to do much more out there, and we'd be exposing one of these orbs.
Should probably stay in here.
Yeah, right, but listen, Witted, and Red walks over.
There are people down there that may be looking for help, people that you know personally.
Don't you want to make sure they're okay?
I'm not...
I'm not doing this for my friends and family.
I'm doing it for all of ours.
If you need me out there, I'll go.
Hold on now, Red.
We talked about this.
Gaining control of this thing is only one part of it.
We don't want to lose control.
And it could be just as simple for any of these giants,
perhaps under a spell or riding some sort of creature to even make it up to it.
Even if we leave it in the sky,
I don't think we should leave it alone.
It only takes four of them to flip those switches.
I agree. I think we should have one of us in here.
When you have a suit of armor, don't leave it abandoned. That's my rule.
Maybe turtling up in here would save some, but there's people down there that need boots on the ground.
This is what we've been talking about. We've been talking about getting this thing.
And we've been talking about using it for our own defenses.
If we still have the key, then maybe it won't be as easy for someone to take the voted out from us.
Timil's kind of wandered over to those viewing stones and is just looking again at,
and it's like surveying like the scenes and the skirmishes that we've been talking about.
It's, it's carnage.
And you find it hard to believe that the Von and Dodd would be a precise enough instrument
to be able to make a difference in the interior of the city where you want to preserve
historical structures, neighborhoods, people's, you know, homes.
Holmes.
We've been here before.
Not too long ago, actually.
It's a beautiful Elven City.
And it's being destroyed.
A transparent image of a tall elven woman with long Auburn hair, worn in elaborate braids,
shimmer's into view before you.
Red and Doran, you recognize her immediately, having met her before.
This is Jack Page's mother.
Oh.
Kamara Lailithar.
Oh.
Oh, Mrs. Page.
Oh.
I am pleased to find you occupying the Uther Berber de Verne.
Uh, um...
The titan of death.
Oh, God, uh, how do I do this?
He's terrible.
Uh, your son.
He's...
Um...
A troubled look passes her face.
Look...
We will have time for that later.
Absolutely.
Act quickly, and you can assist me in the defense of silvery moon.
Right?
In grave danger.
This is Temeel and widded.
Wigwama.
She briefly inclines her head to each of you and to whim.
What do you need from us?
How will we help?
The wards of silvery moon, a pair of statues acting as mythal to the city, were stolen from my safeguarding.
These mythal, shaped like the sun and the moon, act to prevent giants, demons, goblinoids,
all manner of evil creatures from entering the city with destructive intent.
This may have been the first plan of Duke Zaltos,
attack, retrieving them and replacing them in my keeping, will restore the city's invulnerability
to the siege, and compel the intruders to move back beyond the city walls.
Do you know who took them?
I'm told that the thief is a drowl sorceress.
She was last spotted leaving my family's library, though if you can help me, I will
move and assist you in locating her precisely.
Of course, of course we can help you.
Look, this Titan is doing the job for us.
We need to get down there, and Red says that to Widdard.
As long as we can still control this thing, and he's got the command orb.
Hell, maybe Chaos Hammer would be willing to wait here,
and ensure that this door remains shut.
Chaos Hammer?
Yeah.
I'll defend it with my life.
And I believe that.
Does that bring you some peace of mind, Witted?
Yes, yeah.
That's perfect.
I'll keep a patrol pattern.
All right. Ms. Page, we'll help you. Whatever you need.
Please, there's little time.
You said you can help us find her?
Yes, I have some scrying.
Well, we will begin to move through the city, and if you can communicate with us,
we will follow your instruction.
I will.
Will it, can you control this thing to maybe let an arm out down towards the city?
Something I can slide down in style.
Oh, yeah, I think so. Probably. I'll try to see if I can do that.
Yeah, Najiraz opens a door that is like just adjacent to the stairwell and she says,
activating exit.
Thanks.
We'll be back.
Don't worry.
