Welcome back to Dyshame.
With season two wrapped up, we are heading straight on into season three,
but not without taking a few weeks off.
This week, we are filling in with a continuation of the retrospective
on the last season of Dice Shame.
Hope you enjoy.
I don't know if I've asked this before, but I can't remember your answer.
So it's like it's a new thing.
Oh, life is an adventure.
There were two mirrors in the first room that we encountered
that we didn't actually engage with,
but we saw that they were magical or something.
We ended up going around and then when we came back out.
I went through them.
A red went through.
Yeah, but nothing happened.
It's funny because I just,
I remember this.
I just pulled up the session notes for this.
Cool.
It's a good question, by the way.
I can tell you what I had written.
And I think we decided ultimately that nothing was going to happen because of it
because just the way that the dungeon crawl played out,
there wasn't like a good moment to really exploit it.
But here's the mirror trap as I had written it.
Okay.
The mirror is beautifully wrought from silver,
polished to a perfectly reflective surface, blah, blah, blah.
Across the room, an exact twin of the mirror hangs precisely opposite,
creating an endless reflection.
The first time a PC touches,
and then I wrote slash, stares into slash,
examine slash interacts with the mirror, just making it very loosey-goosey.
Thanks about the mirror.
Absolutely.
Then I have this written out.
Please take a second to read this in full, intending that I would like copy the text
and DM it to the person.
Upon stepping between the mirror, your PC is physically teleported out of the room.
The space your PC is in now is connected to the mirror room through this magic mirror.
You can see the room you came from and it's occupants, but you cannot pass.
back through the mirror. You cannot be seen or heard by your party. You are not immediately
noticed to be missing because there seems to be a doppelganger in your place, someone who appears
to be you in every way. Please continue to play this session as your evil doppelganger. Interpret the
doppelganger's evil motivations however you wish, have fun. Your PC will be freed from their prison
once certain conditions are met. Mechanically, the evil doppelganger is identical to your PC, but
they have half the hit points are technically considered a construct instead of a humanoid,
though they are physically indistinguishable from your PC.
The evil doppelganger does register as a magical illusory with the detect magic spell.
So Joe sent that to me.
I have it here at 912.
It was like 45 minutes to the end of the game.
And I wrote, okay, do I attack them?
And then I remember because it was like we were mid-conversation and I was like trying to debate.
and I think something had come up in the session
that you were kind of like
this isn't gonna fly and you said
you can ignore it if you want
and I said no no I'm in let me reread it
and then you wrote again you're like
if it doesn't sound fun just ignore it
and then I wrote what do you think I'm torn
I don't know and then you said maybe I'll save this trap
for another session and I said okay save it
and then I said but I can still do half hit points
oh man I wish I hadn't asked
because then you could have just put it in
honestly I forgot all about it
But maybe there will be an evil doppelganger situation that comes along later.
But anyone who's listening, feel free to introduce the strange mirror into your own dungeon crawl.
And Nick, if you're asking what conditions would have to occur in order for you to...
I didn't write any.
Perfect.
That's my style.
I have a feeling that this is probably going to be another...
But maybe you could just riff on it for a second in the moment.
If, okay, so if you're trapped in the mirror and then there's a distapelganger, can you interact with stuff in the mirror world that would then affect the real world and give some sort of hint?
Yeah, probably that is.
I think I leave it open in my mind to allow the players.
Like Harlan could have messaged me and be like, okay, red while I'm inside of that like mirror room, I want to do this.
What does that do?
And we could have like...
But I remember exactly what happened.
You put that mirror pretty much directly in front of us with an alternate path right.
And had this been the first thing that someone walked through, it would have made sense for the rest of the session.
The problem was we spent the majority of the session clearing that other room.
And then I think I was like, okay, I'll run back and look.
We just didn't have enough time.
And that's why you were like, well, don't worry about it.
Because we're like half an hour to the end now.
And that's going to be a whole new thing to try to introduce and like, and I totally get that.
Here's the last piece of text I have associated with.
with this mirror puzzle.
Furthermore, you know that blank PC
is also an evil doppelganger.
You can choose to work alongside them
to the detriment of the party
or see them as an equal threat,
whatever makes you tick.
The gop-gangers are getting people
to walk past the mirror
so they get doppel-gangered.
So potentially, then we would have
like Doran and Red in the mirror room
trying to work together to get freed
while their evil doppelgangers were walking.
What would have happened if we all looked in the mirror?
All of us get doppel-gangered,
but Dorian.
Doren would be the one who has to figure it out
and we have three doppelgangers
have to like.
But was it all just our doppelgangers that went on
from that session and our original characters
are still locked in the dungeon of the thousand-fifths.
All they wanted to do is what we wanted to do.
This is where Nick needs to make a note, which is like,
more of that for season three, please.
When we talk to session zero,
because I can see you lighting up.
Yeah.
Episodes dedicated to that kind of stuff.
I mean, yeah, listen.
Listen.
Look.
One of my favorite season two episodes as well that we skipped by was Apple Day.
Apple Day.
Before these two joined.
And it was a town where every, they always have apples.
But every time you eat an apple, you forget that the day moves forward.
That was fucking so funny.
Constantly giving out apples.
So like we walk in town, everyone takes a bite of an apple except for Red, who woke up the next day.
and remembered it was the next day,
but everyone else was like,
well, it's today.
What are you talking about?
We just came into town.
It's like, no, no, no, no, no.
I can't remember how it evolved,
but it was a very, very good day.
Oh, I just pulled it up.
Apple Day.
The thing with the apples.
And then the guy who's making the apples is just like a wizard.
Like, he's like Tim Robinson.
He's like, got all these fucking apples.
I don't know what to do with them.
And he was like shoveling apples into a car.
Yeah.
He says, the thing with the apples is that I don't know what I'm doing
with the apples.
there's too many. They're rotting in the cellars and the rotting brings the bats and I don't know what to do but the bats. Don't even ask me. They're everywhere. Listen, I'm trying to offload this produce man. Cut me some slack. Can you please take some apples with you? That's the whole thing with the apples. He's got too many apples and he's enchanting them so people will eat them all. I love that one. That was so much fun of humor. And so everyone in the top of it sounds like, it's apple day. Everyone needs to eat these apples. Everyone needs to eat another apple. We're like, stop.
Of course.
Have you tried these apples before?
I haven't had one yet.
That was so funny.
That was a good day.
So essentially talking about the Ork tribe, Thousand-Fist Ork's arc.
So if we remember correctly, if I remember correctly, the party had been given the tip off that the way to get into Iron Slig without taking this heat damage was to go and find.
these orcs who had had been making a potion for iron slag, this potion of fire resistance,
that was allowing the giants to exploit slave labor essentially from the small folk
who did not have this innate fire resistance. So you guys went to the orc tribe.
Did you always go into that situation expecting to use diplomacy? Or did you?
you think we're going to have to fight our way
Do you remember how we getting? Because I remember. I don't remember.
It was Timil told a joke.
Timil told a really good joke.
Yeah. What was the joke? I don't remember.
Do you remember, Nick?
Oh, too. What is it? What was it?
It's the two guys walking down the street and they see
a dog licking himself.
And the one goes, I wish I could do that. And the other one was like, well,
maybe if you pet him first.
Yes.
That is good.
Little peek behind the Nick brain.
I try to work that joke into almost every campaign I play.
Oh, perfect.
Fabulous.
This is like the fourth or fifth time I've told it.
I love it.
That's a great joke.
But yeah, that got us into the orc.
Yeah, yeah.
That's how you know Nick's playing.
That joke comes up.
It's a really good one.
Every single thing.
That was a fun map to make, if I remember correctly.
I remember using like a mushroom.
stamp, like a glow in the dark
mushroom stamp and just putting it
everywhere.
I seem to recall thinking
that we were going to have to battle our way
in and out of that. I do.
Not thinking that it was,
you had set it up in. I think because
we went in with no plan. Sure.
Who knows? Well, yeah, I think, yeah.
I mean, he's always ready to swing his
axe, you know? He's like... Ork Splitter does
egg you on. This could be dangerous.
As somebody who paid more attention to magic
items than people's personalities,
whatever Witted did or didn't know about his preferences to orcs.
He did have an axe named Ork Splitter.
And Witt noted that before we went in to the Ork's titles.
You know, put some...
But yeah, we met Booty and the Ork Chieftain, which I figured his name.
Yeah.
Good.
I'm just...
I remember there having been a magic item.
Yeah, it was hanging on the...
It was in his tent.
And it was a necklace.
It was from the netheries.
Yeah.
It was like an amulet thing.
Yeah.
I made a deal that we could wear it.
It was my first time being a menace, yeah.
Yeah.
Yeah.
I'd probably been a menace at least a little bit.
I'm like, we'll clear out your thing so long as my friend can examine it when we come back and we never went back.
Yeah.
We just left.
Do we want to know what that was or should we see?
No, we're going to go back.
Season three.
Season three.
I, okay.
If any place to re-rack, that's,
That's the guy.
There were nethery's ruins there that Witted was definitely going to eventually go back to.
Well, because wasn't there when you, I'm trying to remember the map and I feel like there were the rooms that we, there was the mirror room.
There was the trap room and then there was the bad guy, like the treasure room with the bad guy in it.
But then I feel like the way that we were exiting, there was a side hallway that we never went down.
Yes.
We took a shortcut out, but we didn't go down deeper.
So there's still more there.
There's more.
Season three adventure?
Return, return to the Netherese fortress.
Let it be a little crevasse that opens up to a massive underground structure.
And I have written, the pool room, drinking the water has two effects.
It functions as a weak potion of healing for every turn spent drinking the water.
Second, it causes the drinker to become repulsed by material wealth for 24 hours.
I love that.
That's funny.
I love it.
I would do that in a heartbeat.
I'd go back to some netheries sculpting.
Totally.
Exactly the kind of thing that Witted would be like.
Yeah.
I was already there excavating and now I need help.
Yeah.
Oh, hey.
I need some help.
So fun.
I'm in the NPC Quest Giver now.
I got the little exclamation point over my head.
Hell yeah.
Let's move along to Iron Slag.
Four of the five characters had already been to Iron Slaug.
Everyone except Witted, right?
Wim had been there.
Doren and Red had been there.
Tamil had been there.
We were just outside, though, to be fair.
Sure, sure.
But what was your character's impression leading up to the final assault on Iron Slag?
And do you think they left Iron Slag with any regrets?
Yeah.
I was thinking to myself that in a way, we escaped narrowly with our lives, I think,
by managing to somehow.
get out without
interrupting this entire army party of
of giants that were on that
in that main room and they're like
loud, boisterous and like we know they're there
and yet somehow managed to just like get
I think they left just before we left
no we took the we did this
that Timil's spell outside right
yeah but the bag the bag was because everyone was like
that's right in the bag of that was great
Yeah. So, but I mean, I think looking back, Doran, in some senses, is like, let's do it here right now. Let's take out all of them and figure out some master plan.
You're not a guy for subterfuge. No, I'll have to Google that one. I'm not.
Like spying. Would you call me? Right. Not like spying and scheming. You want to go in ax. Axe. Yeah, I think there was a plan to, you know, redirect the waterfall or something.
something in my mind to flood and drown.
That was the hill giants, I think.
No, that was the stone giants.
No, no, it was iron slag.
Remember, because we had to cross that, that, that thing?
Yes, you're right.
And I had it in the back of my mind.
There's a water wheel at the top of iron slag with the yak folk village.
You're right.
If there's a way that we could sort of like trap and drown the hornet's nest type thing.
Sure.
Yeah.
What about you?
Doran's biggest regret from.
But at the same time, it wasn't that big of a regret because we managed to get out
with our lives.
And looking back, we ended up facing that army in Silver Moon anyways.
I feel like the, like the yak folk village and like that decision to not try to flood,
there was a lot of like, what do we do about the collateral damage?
That's right.
Like, what do we do about the people that have been, that are not aggressors that are
not trying to like blot the downfall of the small bohook in Fehrun in the middle.
Because there was a thing.
You knew that there was a population of innocent people living inside of iron slag.
What are we called non-escapies?
We didn't want to call them slaves because it didn't feel good.
Pre-escapists?
Escapists.
They had escaped.
What was the ones?
When they were still being, when they were still captured.
Pre-escapedes?
Captives?
Pre-escapedists.
But like there was a whole thing.
there was a whole thing that like with widded that was actually a really great
witted moment too of like because you were able to scout with I think reggie or something
and then you had to make a decision about whether I'm going to tell them that there were people
there was collateral damage because we did very similar to dorin was very much like why like we should
be smart about it but you know at some point we're going to need to kill and it's probably
good to kill a lot of them as many as we can in one go and uh yeah cover our our butts that way
So he was okay with collateral one way or the other.
So.
Collateral damage.
Do it.
Yeah.
Anybody else want to hop in?
We don't have to talk about each individual person if you don't have a specific like lighting.
I'll just say I think iron slag has been to date the best example of a place that I felt wholly unprepared for.
Like even now, even how we got out.
Like, even if I was going back in, I would be daunted.
It's so big.
It's so maze-like.
It's so intimidating.
And I don't think I've ever played a D&D game where I go into a place as intimidating as that.
It's just like every turn was like, oh, my, like, and I like that kind of.
Actually, I loved it where you like turn a corner and you're like, okay, this is a room with a sleeping ogre and a bunch
of jail cells.
Like, what do we do?
Like, I really like that aspect of it.
It also bogs just game down a bit, so I'm glad not every episode's like that.
But you're reminding me that there was like that bean counter fire giant, like the administrative fire giant.
There were like the ogres that were there was like one ogre that was sitting behind a desk that was like obviously his boss's desk or something.
Yeah.
And then the sun, the free and son.
Yeah, Zaltember.
Zaltember, yeah.
Like that was a very funny encounter.
That was all really.
And also.
And to find him.
One of my favorite things that always happens in D&D campaigns happened in that in like in Iron Slag right before the Zaltember stuff.
And that's struggling to figure out how to open a door.
And it's really just turn the handle.
It's not locked.
Just get the fuck in there.
It's something that I constantly have to remind myself when I'm running Storm King's Thunder is that when you're inhabiting these giant sized spaces, everything is built for a giant.
And you can't see what is on top of a table unless you climb.
on top of the table because you are so small and trying to emphasize like the difficulty of
climbing stairs and opening doors like you are mouse sized not quite but you are very small compared
to them so you should have to deal with that kind of obstacle and I think it's cool and fun
there was also getting to zoltember in that area up that hallway where we had faced that ogre
and pushed him into a pit.
You remember?
And we like,
we like convinced him or something?
You guys were like running.
You guys were running underneath a dust pin as well.
Yeah, we were underneath a dustpan.
Stephen two, Chinese restaurant.
And then whose idea was it to go into the gas outlets in the fireplaces?
Oh, that was while we were actually in the room.
That was probably.
Yeah.
I don't remember whose idea that was.
That was cool that I would do say.
Tim, I want to take a quick diversion from this line of thinking to ask you specifically.
You are a pro GM who has run Storm King's Thunder.
How many times would you say?
So specifically, more so than the times I've run all of Storm King's Thunder, iron slag.
I've probably run that as even a standalone dungeon or part of Storm King's Thunder,
probably around six or seven times at this point.
I throw it into a lot of my campaigns
as a good like level 12, level 13 dungeon run to go through.
So I would love to ask you specifically about Iron Slag,
having run Iron Slag and being so familiar
with the workings of this dungeon specifically,
were you expecting the group to do things
that were completely ignored
or were any problem solved in ways that you'd never seen before?
Were the ways that I remix the dungeon, did anything like catch you off guard specifically?
Just speak to that as a whole, if you could for a little bit.
100%.
So I have to admit, unfortunately, the sense of surprise wasn't there for me as much.
But the sense of wonder was still there in terms of like, oh, man, I'm really tiny in this big dungeon and I know how bad things can go wrong.
I think you ran it perfectly, which is you can move around somewhat freely.
in this facility, and you can find these rooms kind of where you could, you know, meet the
bean counting ogre and stuff like that, you can light a candle in any one of those rooms,
but you really only get to do that once.
This is a fortress, and you very much set the tone, I thought, extremely well, that we can
sneak around pretty effectively once we've set up, you know, the proper contingencies and
made it, you know, gone about it in a careful way and a smart way.
Once we start fighting, things will spin out of control so fast, and I felt that immensely.
So I felt afraid the whole time in Iron Slag, partially because I knew exactly how bad things could get.
Well, also, the relevant information there I didn't have, which is, have you altered the number of creatures, the types of creatures, all that?
Actually, I have no information about that.
So in many ways, I was like, this could be less dangerous or a lot more dangerous than I think it's going.
going to be. And I just really like how you ran it. I thought it was really effective and as a sort
of puzzle where you're moving from room to room trying to see how much information you can
gather and setting up the way that we did with Zaltember was very surprising. I don't think anyone's
done in any of the times I've run it what we did, which is actually negotiate with the family
after sneaking around first.
That was a really cool thing to see play out
because that's, I know,
a big part of the family dynamic
that you can exploit
that I'm really kind of glad we did.
Yeah, I wanted to set the dungeon
as existing in a specific moment in time, I think.
Like, I wanted to set your invasion of iron slag
on the eve of battle.
So I didn't want to just kind of run a static dungeon.
wanted it to feel like things were also happening. So I wanted there to be like the war feast,
you know, and I wanted them to be dealing with their captives at that time. And I wanted,
I wanted there to be that interfamily conflict where some of them wanted to go or some of them
were feeling kinds of feelings about being at war and, and the idea of conquering.
You certainly did that. Fun. Yeah. I have to say, there, you definitely,
upped the ante, so to speak.
I loved it.
I mean, the Vaughan and Dodd in the book never even becomes active.
Correct.
And in this, not only do we get to fly it, but we got to learn of its existence and have the person behind it become, in a way, part of the party at times.
Which is kind of weird.
And it also vaporized somebody.
Yeah, it's a win-win.
Absolutely.
Wait, hold on.
That's awesome.
What?
Witted will have the AI in his suit be the person who killed our previous party member.
Yeah, yeah.
That's fucking cool.
It is kind of metal.
Like, on a personal level, I love, like, you know, redemption arcs like that where, like, there's a member of the party who killed someone that you knew, but, you know, didn't want to.
I do feel bad about that one friend of yours.
I was merely testing my weapon.
catch his name, but he screamed like this.
I do have a recording of his last moment.
I really smoked him.
He diarrheaed himself.
Oh, no.
He diarrheaed himself.
Finally, let us focus our attention on the finale of season two, the silvery moon battle,
as well as the Vaughn and Dodd, I guess, dungeon crawl.
Yeah, that was cool.
Yeah, that was, I mean, it was pretty, it was pretty exciting to run the Von and Dodd as a dungeon.
It wasn't something that I had really truly considered until we were onboarding Tim because you had mentioned that you had run the Von and Dodd as a dungeon before.
So I will fully credit Tim Woods as giving me the inspiration for making the Von and Dodd into a dungeon.
that you could traverse and then befriend.
And then befriend.
I wasn't able to really wrap my head around the dungeon the way that you had talked about
your players like tipping it forward and having to like change the orientation of all
of the rooms on the fly because my brain would explode if I had to do that.
But it's interesting for giving me that idea.
It's interesting you mentioned that because it's,
basically you did something that I recognized came from
like what I had mentioned but it was done very differently
because I upscaled the size of the Vonen Dodd
but even then you are still like I was envisioning
this thing you're climbing up through the leg and only
you know one giant could ever climb up the leg at a time kind of thing
so it's pretty compact still and the rooms are big
but for a giant they're all quite cramped and stuff and you're really only going
your way from like the bellies a room, the torso's a room, and that's all like pretty, you know,
one small battlefield each. And then I had a group who did reverse gravity, picked up the whole
rob over about and just dumped it. I'm like, fine, the dungeon's on its side now, I guess.
And that really threw things. But you, by doing the shrinking mechanism, fit in actual
properly sized dungeon and very much turn the vonendod into this pocket dimension of indeterminable size,
which made it about a hundred times more wondrous.
Mine was very much like,
so we know we need to get to the head
and you're getting through a small submarine
is more the feel of it.
This felt like it was a city and a robot
and forwitted to kind of stumble upon
an almost like Eldorado type
or national treasure like you're opening up like,
whoa, whoa, this is much bigger treasure room
than I thought kind of thing.
It was very, very cool moment for him.
Yeah, I love that.
I thought that was so cool.
I thought that was written in.
So way to go, Joe.
Seriously.
Yeah, that's a really, that was a really neat.
I actually, I'm going to say not only was that cool, it was just, I wasn't even sure
it was happening.
Like you wrote it that way.
I thought maybe we were just misunderstanding it.
I was like, oh, well, when you were like, oh, when you came out with it, I thought to myself,
that's really clever, you know, have this goal into some sort of pocket dimension.
Yeah, we're teeny tiny.
Thank you.
And it makes sense of the Beatles, too.
Yes.
Yeah, that they like dug their way in and then they were like,
oh yeah.
Beatles.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Anything that anyone else want to like highlight about silvery moon specifically or?
I mean, meta, I, again, some people know, some people may have forgotten.
Listeners may know.
But I love that Joe ran a parallel campaign, a single one shot session.
Yes.
with the drow we fought against that took the mithril.
What were they called?
Mithal.
That character was also in a little Invictus game with some fans that got to play and they failed at stopping her.
But I just thought that was kind of a cool little crossover.
So people got to listen to that episode and be like, oh, I fought her and failed.
Yeah, I ran a quick one shot for some fans of Harlan's.
show malevolent
D&D fans and so they were
they played just this one shot
in Silvery Moon on the eve of battle
and they were tasked
with breaking in
to the library
where the mythel were being kept to try
to steal them into safety
because someone knew that this
drow was coming to take them and they
failed on their mission but I was going to
have that influence whether
you were going to meet the drow
who had taken the mythel or actually
this party of NPCs who had taken it and had like essentially misplaced.
Imagine we just slaughter them?
Yeah, yeah.
Who are you?
So they.
That's the dead.
Full dead.
Hey,
Wait,
what level were they?
They were only level fives.
So we would have wrecked them.
We would have mop the floor.
Yeah.
You'd have messed them up pretty good.
Oh,
man,
we would have ruined their day.
I did not record it.
No,
that was just like a fun one shot.
Because it would have been interesting to slip that in, you know?
More stuff for Harlan to edit.
Yay. Exactly. Great. Well, I think that about wraps up our summary for season two, our retrospective, our look back. I'm really excited for what season three has to offer. Just before we go, I want to do a really quick group question to finish off with something that's a little bit heartfelt.
felt five years from now, seven years from now, when we are looking back at season two,
what do you think you will remember most of all?
The friendships made.
The adventure.
Boom!
The destination and not the journey.
I was all about the destination for me.
I'm glad we got there.
I would have been furious otherwise.
I firmly believe that, I mean, the, the,
the Vaughan-Dod Silvery Moon battle,
even if I forget the mechanics of it,
even if I forget what we were doing in it,
the image of a giant, like,
thing flying into a battlefield and an Elven City.
I think that's like, in my brain,
that's like our Helms deep, baby.
God, the edit on it,
honestly, because I'm remembering now,
like the music,
the sound design on it,
was very cool.
You did a great job, Harlan.
For the Vonnegut.
Sabotage?
Is that the...
Oh, I forgot about that.
Like, yeah.
Yeah.
How everyone dismounts.
I used three or four Beastie Boys songs.
And it's funny because I must have bought the karaoke files.
Oh, no, no, no.
I was just remembering that one of my, I think that, I think this will stick with me forever.
But the, you know, like the moment where red, like sliding down the arm, very cool,
Tameel slides down the arm really cool.
And the door is like, squeak, squeak!
Squeak!
You know what to use for that dry ice sound?
That's very good.
Very good.
That door and butt.
Wait.
Wait.
Wait.
Oh my God.
What was that fucking running joke that we did with the bot, the butt cream?
The dwarven butt cream.
Oh, the dwarven blood cream in, in, uh, the dwarven city.
Feldbar?
Yes.
Citadel Felbar.
In Citadel Felbar.
Everyone was going shot.
And like, you all piled on top like, I do want some of that dwarven bum cream.
That's for asses.
That was fucking funny.
And then.
Yeah, and then Witted was like, he had like a nozzle where it's like,
delivering bum cream, he's like, I'm almost out.
That whole bear is funny.
All right.
And with that, we will leave this, this lovely episode.
Thank you, everyone, for joining me for season two.
Oh, thank you, Joe.
Thank you, Jeff.
Wow.

You know, I can't help but feel like reading the names of the Patreon supporters
is becoming longer than the episodes themselves.
So I'm gonna try something a little different here and use some magic.
We would like to thank our Patreon supporters.
