It's gonna be all right, buddy. We got this. That's Popeye. This is the worst time to be doing shots. I have to face my own fears. Some kind of crazy machine. Sound effects alone. Just wait until you're all the crashing I'm gonna do. Not the crab.

Oh, no. Cover me. I'm gonna grapple and constrict you. Yeah, that sounds about it. Got it. What the hell? Oh, ow. Everything is very damp now.

This feels like a bad idea. And then I need to decide what else I'm doing. That's a critical fail. It's a one. Natural fucking 20. Oh! Yeah. It's snack time now. Welcome back to Dice Shame.

This is Season 2, Episode 33, Crab Mentality. MVP this week is Miss Adventress, also known as Jury on our Discord, who's been live vlogging their listen. The cavernous room shakes with the screeching roar of this enormous mechanical creature. Blue-white orbs of ball lightning roll down its flanks as it turns to face you, red and Mari. And you smell the ozone in the air where the creature's terrifying lightning breath singed and split the molecules cruising through the bodies of Kieran, Jack, and Doran in a vicious line,

dropping the familiar and bringing your fighter to his knees. The creature seems to be made of interlocking plates of steely metal. It's thick serpentine body supported by a dozen smoothly jointed limbs and its vicious mouth full of razor-sharp serrated teeth. Jack, it's your turn. Oh no. I wasn't ready. Well, fuck you.

Oh, no! The dragon has advantage. Doran no! Doran slumps to his knees. Jack pulls out his greater healing potion out of his pocket and opens Doran's gullet and tosses that down there just to see what that does. Chug a lug.

I forgot their greater healing potions. Gives you 13 extra hit points. There you go. So you're still lying on the ground, and now you've got 13 hit points. Holy shit. Mechanical dragon. What the f. Cremlott.

Aw. What's this thing just north of us? Just to your north, Jack, there is, it's almost 10 feet in diameter, and it's about four feet tall. It looks to be some kind of basin that you, you could, I don't know, have some sort of liquid contained in maybe. It's concave in any case. Well, it's enough to put something between me and this incredible mechanical beast.

And so Jack is going to dash behind it and then use the power of his mind to pull Doren and sort of in this direction as well to try and get us some cover behind it. Excellent. I kind of like, you know, you see through rolled back, semi-conscious eyeballs, I give you a knowing look. Sure, sure It's going to be all right, buddy, we got this Oh, thanks, Jack Mari, it's your turn From across the room

You see everything that's transpired With your companions This looks very bad This looks very bad I'm saying this both of the character And as myself Yes, it does Yes

Oh, fuck Sorry, can I ask one very, very silly meta thing right now That's not really to any of this. It's called D&D. Don't worry about it. Shit, I've been calling a Pathfinder this whole time. Ruled twice.

And then only add the modifiers once. That's right. That's right. Okay, Marie looks over and sees Doran Fall and then Jack pour what appears to be some sort of liquid in his mouth. He's getting him drunk. It's his superpower. Not now. This is a terrible time.

This is the worst time to be doing shots. This is the worst time to be doing shots. Not if you're doing. Dorin, not if you're Doran. Come on, wake up. Do something, Mari, please. He's given a Mountain Dew Code Red. We're getting ready to get some gamer fuel going. And she sees this horrifying metal creature facing, like looking out over all of them. And she reaches into her mind and thinks upon all of these creatures that she's seen, all of these animals. And she remembers this time that she was deep, deep in the water.

She was swimming with her sister, and they went into, like, a little cave, and what they came across was just what, at the time she thought was the scariest thing she'd ever seen, just this thing that frightened her to her core. And when she does that, she raises one hand up, and a beam of light comes down onto Doran. And he starts to transform, like an animorph. Yes. They did it, those sons of, they brought it in. This is just like animorphs.

It is like animorphs. Jack and Mari bonding over animorphs in a way. Yes. I feel like an alien in my brain. You read those books too? No, Rob and Alex. Let's not bring that in. Come on.

And his body starts to expand outwards. His arms begin to turn like chitinous and clawed and his legs. not only expand outwards but more of them form and he turns into a giant crab. Oh my God! Doran's kind of out of it when Mari's casting the spell

and his eyes are kind of rolling around a little uneasy until all of a sudden he feels this tingling on his skin and as he looked around the room that's smaller around him and he's standing there with huge crab claws as

hands. Holy crap oh holy crap well that that worked better than i thought it would oh my god in his own mind he's saying oh my god and he's snapping his snappers up in the air yeah yeah yeah horrifying yes oh yeah because dorin can't talk anymore yes dorin i'm really sorry and if you're mad about something just tap on the floor once for yes and twice for no oh no i clap my fingers up in the air like you know like you just don't care yeah like i'm single-handed clapping. If anything, you should be apologizing to me.

Me or adoring? Why? The sound effects alone. It's going to take me so much longer now. Hey, you know what's cool? This airplane crashes in the side of the building. Just wait until you're all the crashing I'm going to do. Click, click, click, click, click, click, click.

I'll cut it. Get some, this is a great chance for you to go out and buy some crab and to sit there to make crab legs. Oh, it's my skin and cracks. Ooh, yes. And once she sees this happen, this giant crab form, hopefully it doesn't step on Jack. Oh, no. She places her hand against her chest and her starry form takes over.

She calls upon the starry form of the archer. So she's bathed in all these little star shapes that create this constellation across her. And now she has a bow. And she has a bow made of starlight and almost in like moon beams. And she points towards the giant horrifying crab thing. Not the crab thing. Not the crab thing. Not the storn. You said it.

You can't do it. No. Oh, God. It's like chess. I have to face my own fears. I can't do anything, but now I do have a beautiful, shiny form. Subsequent. So you look great.

I look great. And you turned one of your party members into a giant crab? Doran looks weird. Dorn looks, yeah. It's the weirdest. He's out of him. He looks freaky. His tiny little crab mandibles just blow a bubble.

Yeah. And like, you know how crabs have that little hair? It's making a little tiny beard right where I should have a beard. He's got blood in it Adorable Mari you watch as this ball of lightning

comes out of the doorway that leads to the north one to the left and actually one to the right as well and they come out of the darkness hovering about four feet above the ground and they start moving into the room Jack you're going to want to watch out

Yeah What the hell of those I don't know Well they already came out But I think one zap Or me They already zapped you in Yeah

You and Doran it Yeah crouching behind Doran's Big crab claws I sort of look north Up that passage Where this weird glowing energy You see a puzzling sight

Jack Even for you There is a chamber Beyond with a lot lot going on in there. It looks like some kind of electrical field is spawning these balls of electricity that are kind of wandering out of the room. You see some shards of pink crystal that surround some kind of apparatus in the center of the room and these balls of lightning are churning

around it like a whirlwind. What do you see? Some kind of crazy machine covered in lightning in crystals. I can't make sense of it from here, but... All right. Red, it's your turn. Red looks a little bit up past where Jack is and can kind of just see the fledgings of light pouring out of that room. And Red thinks to himself for a second.

He sort of looks over to Mar and he says, I think that room might have something. Maybe this is all a machine that needs to be turned off. Cover me! Sorry, go ahead. You can see what you guys. Oh, yeah. I forget I was going to say. It's gone.

Okay, cover me. Okay. Is that a good idea? Is that a good idea? This feels like you're running straight into just a whole bunch of spooky lightning ghost balls that are coming out of here. It's never stopped him before. I don't know, but if there's a chance that it shuts all this down, I don't know if Jack can take another hit like that. No, I don't think any of us could take another hit like that.

And Red starts running north, but as he does, as he notices veranda still standing in the passageway, he says, Veranda, head upstairs through the secret passage and turn off the power to the lift. And then he continues running north. Cool. Yeah, you see a look of panic and she just takes off down the hallway. And I'm going to dash up to the other passageway that the other ball of lightning came from. And before I move any further, I just want to look into where I'm running. Red, you see a room, much like I described earlier.

There is a central machine surrounded by four. pillars of teal crystal and then there are these three orbiting balls of lightning that are connected to this central mechanism it looks like I mean you have to shield your eyes to even make out the details in this room but it looks like there's some kind of inscription on the floor there's writing on the floor in here can you read it writing oh boy everybody at once you guys have to do give me 10 minutes so I can I think I still have that spell up yeah probably it's no I'm assuming I would be able to tell that it's similar to the stuff we saw in the first room right yeah yeah I think he's going to

bite the bullet and he's going to move past the creature red as you try to kind of like get around no I don't even think he tries to move around it he like barrel rolls into it and tries to like just keep moving yeah one for the team it absorbs into your body

and you are electric Redd, I don't know how I'm supposed to cover you with this. You uncovering me? What the hell? She's like yelling for this out of the room. How am I supposed to cover that? Oh, my God. You take nine lightning damage. Oh, I'm down.

Just kidding. Oh, thank goodness. I thought she was going to stay six years. You motherfucker. And as you move through this ball of lightning, it disappears. Oh. We still have, I still have movement. So I'm, I figure I will, um,

spend all my movement to just reveal these two rooms completely yeah and then i think red will wait on the edge of this it looks like there's a hallway connecting the two rooms yes so there are two rooms to the north they seem to be identicalish there are a couple of different details one the color of the crystals is different to the room to the east has got some kind of pillar machine on top of essentially what amounts to a summoning circle. So one's an infomagnetor, and the other one's an exo-magnavist. What was that? Who was it?

Who was a magnetor? An inkter-magnetor. And the other one's ex-o-magnetor. That's what they're called. Got it. What? In-to-magnetter and an ectomagnetor. Oh, I know them.

Totally. Those are real things. This is an amateur. Stop. a stroke right now. Is he talking crab? What's happening? So I used up my turn running essentially, but I'm going to just spend the remainder of the time until my next turn, essentially just looking around. I have a passive investigation

of 17, a perception of 20. I just want to be studying the paths of these things, the coloration, and anything on the walls that might give me more information for when I start my turn next. Cool. We will reconvene. on that information that you gather when it's your turn next. Doran, or should I say crab, boy. Chrome me.

No one can see you making a cute crab claw gestures. But feel it, though. Click, click. That's his name now. Let's see what Mr. Crabb can do. He's Mr. Crabbs. Money, money, money, money. I knew this was coming for us all.

Okay, the crab is going to He's going to use his crab Claw attack Fuck him up, Crab Doren He's like, you see this sort of giant crab Now crashed through the room a little You mean crabs through the room? Yes, crabs through the room

I'm feeling crabby What's the where I'm looking for? Like a bull in a china shop? He's... Like a crab and a workshop Yeah, yeah, yeah like a giant crab in a workshop he barrels through knocking everything over in his way jack's like no yeah jack like ducks as like yeah yeah as my god it's gross looking up the back

end of a crab towards whatever this is you're looking at his crab asshole there's only crab's hole I think he's like a cloaca is it clips the sun in this that's right that's right do crabs So you get over there. All right. Yeah. So he's going to do a claw attack. So this is going to be 19 to hit. Yes, you hit.

Hey. 21. Hey. 21 points of damage. So it does budging damage and the target is grappled. Well, you take one of the limbs of this huge creature in your claws. And you try to pinch him right where it has. hurts.

Excellent. Well done. As you get nice and close to this mechanical creature, it discharges these electricity balls from the length of its body. Is it charging balls all over you? Of course it does. Make a dexterity saving throw. Oh, of course.

An 18. Hey. Ah. Yeah. You succeed. So you only take. two lightning damage Oh wow

Okay So you're saying is Doran The balls avoided crab Well we'll workshop this We'll come back to it We'll come back to With balls discharging and crabs

Nicely done They just sort of like tinks off the crab shell Take my balls Oh my God This is Tom and Jerry This is like when my friend kept Spamming our group chat with pictures of Pinocchio covered in icing, and I was just like, I hate this so much. In response to your crab claw attack, this gargantuan robot dragon essentially turns around and tries to take a giant bite out of you.

A giant bite out of the huge giant crab. Kaiju fights. I love that it's a huge giant crab. A huge giant bite. Natural fucking 20. Oh, snack time now. We'll double your damage. It's very charming.

You take 26 piercing damage. I didn't roll great. I'm going to be honest with all of you. And then it's going to try to grapple you in return. Oh, really? Yeah, it's going to... A grappler? Oh, it's going to try to take control of this.

situation. Whoa. Just copying me now thinks it's cool. I do enjoy that this has turned into crab versus dragon, though. Oh, yes. It's not a dragon. Why do we keep calling it that? Well, it is a big reptile.

It's like a big reptile robot. It's a Komodo dragons. Ooh, man, I'm rolling hot. 29 to hit you. Yep. And you're just huge, right? You're not gargantuan? Huge.

I'm a huge beast. huge a huge giant crab you take 15 bludgeoning damage and you're grappled we're just keep grappling back and forth

well you're grappled we're grappling each other also you are being constricted so this creature's like tail kind of wraps around your crab body and it's he's trying to like crack you open and eat you so what you're saying is

your mechanical dragon is sort of like one upper. Yeah, definitely. He's like, oh yeah, you're going to grapple me? Well, I'm going to grapple and... I'm going to grapple you back. And constrict you. And constrict. And get ready for what happens next. I thought you were going to say consume him. Like, instead of constricted when you started saying it. And my brain just went, oh, is he getting vored? This is coming back now?

Vord. Jack. Ah, all right. I'm going to use the power of my mind to try and force this little electrical bubble floating behind me into the ground to try and ground it out. Is it the sort of thing that can be shoved telekinetically? What are the rules of your telekinetic shove? As a bonus action, you can shove one creature that is within 30 feet of you. So if it's not a creature...

It's not a creature. Well, then I can't do that. And that answers that question. Whoopsie. Sizing up this thing doesn't look like a creature, not worth spending the bonus action on, is what I'm hearing. Yep. In which case, I'm going to pull out my spellguard sphere and say the magic words and wave it around in such a way as to try and... Toll the dead?

Toll the dead and, you know... Took the words right out of my mouth to try and... Sorry. Add as much entropy as I can to this machine that our crab friend is fighting and see what I can do to end its existence. Cool. What kind of save you want me to make? Wisdom, 17, please. That's only a 14. Well, it'll take eight necrotic dancing.

Run towards the door that Red left through on the west side of this chamber. Excellent. Okay. Yeah, so you size up some lightning, throw some necrotic energy at this monster, and then hoof it. I run and take some cover around this, like, still at the north end of the wall here, trying to put as much stuff between me and this monster as I can. Still? Booze?

Stop and stand still at the still. Doran stops attacking the monster and goes over in crab form. If you like to be crab drunk, I've been turtle drunk. He has been turtle drunk. Oh, yeah. That's great.

Good time. And Jack was a badger, also drunk. And you ended up in a burrow somewhere. I made a little burrow and curled up underneath a tree. It was lovely. Yeah, you were investigating all the tree roots. I love that.

So far. It was a fungal wedding. It's the only one we've been invited to. You won't be invited back. It was the fungus one. Anyway, that was a much different game than tonight's game. Mari, it's your turn. She closes her hand at a fist, and all of a sudden,

a giant wave of water appears beside this giant mechanical lizard. And it crashes down upon just this massive amount of water. It just knocks everything off the tables. it causes a big old mess. Everything is very damp now. This feels like a bad idea. Electricity isn't conducted through water at all. No one worry about that.

There's a grate on the floor. Yeah, it's fine. Yeah, yeah. It's all drifting. It's all dripping down. It's like a big wet room. It's fine. It's fine.

Yeah, it's fine. You want me to make a deck save? Yes, deck safe, please. Okay. That is a 21. That does save, but you still do take damage. Okay, doke. No, no, no, nah, nah, nah, math time.

That's 11 points of damage. Excellent. So this massive wave of water crashes through the room and then disappears, hopefully, down the grate in the center. Yes. And then I'm also going to use my bonus action to fire an arrow at it. Mm-hmm. Because I can do that because she's a beautiful archer right now.

Why not? She is. Heck yes. Yeah. 24 to hit. Yeah, you do. I'm going to do eight points of damage. Excellent.

And then I'm just going to run up towards where Jack is. Yeah, this shimmering dart of magic just phew lances through the air and sticks in this thing's side. Red, as you watch these mechanisms in the two northern rooms, these balls of lightning are rotating around this central mechanism you you watch as it spits out another ball of this lightning and it moves out towards the room jack leave me alone one of these balls of lightning begins to move towards you honing in on you and two more take their place don't let him touch you marie they're shocking I mean I I'm not surprised by that. It looks awful.

Right, as you spend your turn sort of examining these two mechanisms, you note that the one to the east, again, has this, like, central column in the center of it that seems to be on some kind of summoning circle. It's all very gnomish, and there's, like, gears. It's all steampunk and shit. And you watch as these balls of lightning move around the central pillar. There are lines of lightning that arc, this electricity between these circling orbs and the central pillar. It looks like if you wanted to try to disarm this machine from your position,

you're going to have to get up close to it, which would risk electrocuting yourself. but you could probably disarm the mechanism if you were within melee range. Okay. I couldn't, so I can't shoot it from a distance. I mean, you could try. I mean, I'm an archa, baby. Shattering arrow.

Yeah, for real. Like, I got bursting arrows. Are you, sorry, just, and this is meta. Are you talking with like, it's a switch or like it's a glass cylinder? It's like, it's like a thing with a, it's got, like a handle that you could imagine having to, like, lift it open. Oh, okay, cool. Then, yeah, oh, okay.

Red sees this, and he swallows hard, and he says, he's just going to sting. And he will move towards the center, dodging these moving, pulsing arcs of lightning. He sort of, like, takes a step forward and then jumps back as one, like, just passes him, and then he, like, ducks under another. Mm-hmm. And he, like, you know, stops right before one is.

It singes the little hair just above his nose and then takes another step forward. You're double dutching all over the place. Roll a dexterity saving throw. I presumed as much. What's double dutching again? Not bad. 14 plus. You said it was dexterity?

It is. It's 22. Hey. Hey, nice. Pretty good. Not bad. Pretty good, Red. All right, all right.

Buy it. Whoa. Red, you dip and duck underneath these. arcing lines of electricity moving closer and closer to the central pillar, and you manage to get up close without any of them striking you. Your fur is like standing on edge. Yeah. Standing on end.

Both. And yeah, you get to the center of this mechanism. And I throw the switch. You open up the cover on the top of this pillar, revealing a central gem. that is resonating with this pulsating, magical electricity. Red pulls out his ghost dagger, and he reaches in, and he smashes it. Cool. Roll to hit. 22 again.

Excellent. How much damage? Six damage. Mm. Red, you jam the ghost dagger deep into the heart of this crystal, and a big piece of it chunks off. As you do, you take 13 lightning damage. And the lights in this room begin to flicker and die. You're right in there?

Doren, it's your turn. Doreen clatters his claws, his one claw. Click, click, click. And he attacks this dragon beast's head. Mm-hmm. Oh, I don't get luck or anything. This is a whole new thing, eh? You only have crab luck.

That's a critical fail. It's a one. Oh, no. Poor shame. You poke your shame. I know why? Because you're double grappled. That's why.

Yeah. I like clip off my own legs. I'm like, oh, ow. Oh, no. Oh, no. You know crabs. Oh, yeah. Crabbs love clipping off their own legs.

It's the best. Well, they can grow them back. As you do that and you spectacularly fail to injure this creature, you take six more points of lightning damage as you get just mildly electrocuted by being in such close proximity to the creature. Then, because you guys are locked in this terrible embrace, the creature begins raking at you with its talons. Caught in a terrible embrace. Whoa, whoa.

So, 26 to hit you. This is going to be a bunch of attacks, by the way. That hits. Eight slashing damage. Attack number two, natural 20. Oh, no. Okay, that hits. For 10 damage.

Attack number three, 23 to hit. Yep. 12 slashing damage. Okay. Attack number four. It's just raking you with its vicious cloth. This thing has 12 legs. It's not going to hit you 12 times, but it's going to have a bunch of fucking times.

Too many legs. 19 to hit you? Yep. 13 slashing damage And for the final and sixth attack Oh my god 20 to hit Yeah also hits

By the way my health ran out of 69 Nice 14 slashing damage And that's down to 55 Not nice Well that didn't last long No bummer But again that's a lot of damage you soaked up there

Oh my God That's a huge damage You did about 57 points of damage. Just in that one attack. Boy, oh boy. Yeah, this creature's just

raking at your shell, pulling bits of kite off. It smells terrible in here. Jack, it's your turn. Jack reaches out with his mind and shoves Doran five feet back away from this beast. Just out of the range of the other six legs that I'm sure we're coming imminently.

Just back. it up. Do you allow him? Oh, yeah. You're into that. And then I need to decide what else I'm doing. Some of what I'm doing is running away from these fucking electricity things. Yeah. Doren's beady eyes glare and say thank you. They just want to hug you.

Jack kind of like crouches, climbs underneath one of these like air flying machines on the West wall, trying to take a little bit of cover, but still sort of see through the weird apertureances and stuff to get a line on this. a funky dragon thing and he then I think pulls out the Spell Guard sphere again and tries to throw it as much entropy at this thing as he can trying to

toll the dead and pull it apart one more time okay want to give me that wisdom save please that's only a four 19 necrotic damage there we go that's a little better more than double last time it was true much better I am done I have All right, Mari, Jack slides into cover beside you underneath this strange flying machine. What do you do?

Hi, Jack. Hey. How's it going? Well, I'm being chased by those zappy little balls over there, and Doran seems to be holding his own against that monster, so that's something for a moment. Yeah, it's like, and she looks over, and there's like this, she has no words for it, but somewhere in another variation of Mari in another world, she knows it's a Godzilla fight of Godzilla versus the giant

crap monster. And she just has like sort of fate memory she can't place, but she's like, this would make a good play. Having a bit of a fan girl moment. Mm-hmm. I'm going to cast guiding bolt at.

There you are. So she sort of waves her fingers kind of behind her head and another, in a bolt of pure light comes out and she casts that towards this thing. And that's going to be 17 to hit no you miss

and I don't think that does anything if I miss nope good try it doesn't so yeah it sails over there it shoots past one of Doran's eye stalks when sails past it it looks cool but I can still your Archer thing excellent

so I'm going to do that and that's going to be an 18 no god damn it just just just just She's just blindly shooting the beams of light. They're just sailing around her. They're just hitting shit on the walls. It's breaking pieces of wood.

But nothing is it, anything of use. Oh, man. And it's just a mess, but I guess I'll just stay where I am. Sounds good. As you sit beside Jack underneath this machine, you watch as this ball of lightning, just casually floats towards you and then embeds itself in your chest

I did not need this either he takes six lightning damage yeah that sounds about right she's just like what a day good grief just make your concentration though don't mess that one oh shit yeah if you have inspiration use it

I rolled in 18 nice sweet all right you're unbothered by being electric Red. You are standing in the middle of this electric room chipping hunks of crystal off of this thing. Yeah. Red drops the dagger, jumps back, pulls his arrow out, and fires into it. Roll to hit this almost disabled crystal. That's a 16 plus 22. Yeah, you hit.

Nice. Is it humanoid? Oh, my God. I cast whole person. Oh man The partly disabled Crystal is a human It's just a really

Mari Jack and Crab Doren You see the lightning balls That were being shot out By this machine Disappear Hey. Sweet.

Red inside of the room, the ball lightning stops orbiting, and the glow from the crystals disappears. The glow from behind you in the other room is still present, though. And through the noise of battle, you hear the elevator start to ascend.
