Starting point is 00:00:01 When the hell did you get here? Damn all the souls. I've already had two, two breers here. Yeah, well, uh... I will punt a turtle halfway across this room. It wasn't me. Stop it! I said stop it. Confusing as ever.
Starting point is 00:00:12 Anyway. We'll have another one live. Yeah what she said, Tenney. How does that sound? All right, giant lady. Welcome back to Dyshame. This is season three, episode one, back to Square One. back to square one.
Starting point is 00:00:37 MVP is Reza, who's been live blogging their listen on our Discord. They are midway through season two, and they say, I support women's rights and women's wrongs. Thanks so much for listening, Reza. You are this week's MVP. I am so excited. Let's get this season started. Yo! Your long ship chops along the water with every stroke of the oars that drive her along the icy waves. The wind poles are the tops of the crests, turning them to white mist that spatters the raised figurehead's draped form. Its sinuous limbs, inked with black, and now capped in a crust of salt.
Starting point is 00:01:34 The sky is a burned gold color, hazy. Your many shipmates are indistinct. All you can focus on is the silver ash ore in your calloused hands. The purple rocks on the horizon. The distant, hollow sound of the call. You feel its pulse in your bone marrow, in your forearms, in the jelly of your eyes. Its toll is deeper than any bell. You know with animal certainty what it means.
Starting point is 00:02:14 Gather now. The time is now. Blinking spray from your eyes, you're dragging the ship up onto the sand with rope fiber splintering your hands. And everywhere, the waves are crashing, dragging, pleading at the bare skin of your calves, beaching new ships up along the coast. You're compelled, anxious. It is time. The path from the beach is the color of crushed-up amethyst.
Starting point is 00:02:45 Tall, blade-edged, turquoise, grass shivers. You follow a hundred indistinct footprints up, breath-ragged, to where the burned gold sky meets the sheer cliffs, standing shoulder to shoulder with other ragged men, and as the rain begins to fall on your faces, the call blows your mind to pieces. Red-handed Robin awakes from this dream, tangled in his bedroll.
Starting point is 00:03:24 The embers of the camp's fire have burned low. Off to his left, a red dragon-born wrapped in a traveling cloak gently snores. Across the fire, a half-ling is propped, Sammy sitting against a fallen log, sleeping with her hand on her dagger. As Red packs up his things without a word, the only other movement is the eyes of an elf, perched in a nearby oak tree silently watching him prepare to go.
Starting point is 00:03:54 Red avoids looking up at her and disappears into the night. Three ten day later. Found in a narrow alley off of a main street in the northward of Waterton, Deep, Troll Skull Manor is unassuming from its exterior. A cupboard front porch shelters the entrance, and a sign hangs over the door proclaiming for all, this is the place. No other information is given. The windows repaired, the shutters re-hung and painted, some cat strangler vine grows along one side despite multiple attempts to cut it back and is in full bloom.
Starting point is 00:04:37 Inside, Trollscul Manor is now an operational tavern and in, chalk full of wind. whimsy and details as pleasing to its proprietors as to its clientele, boasting three stories. A tower, a parlor, small conservatory, sellers, a handful of rooms for rent and private accommodations, crewed by a handful of transient staff and overseen by a somewhat surly poltergeist named Lyff. The tavern is a lively place most hours of the day. It is the 23rd of Caithorne, the time of flowers. And red-handed Robin, the Tabaxi Ranger of some renown. member of Red's rovers and proprietor of this tavern has just woken up.
Starting point is 00:05:19 Oh, Jesus. Live! I told you, don't double-tuck my sheets! Red stands up and shakes the way a cat does, stretches, yawns in the morning light, and heads downstairs. Red, you head downstairs from your third floor accommodations, I guess. Oh, yeah. You have chosen the top-most room that's got access to the tower.
Starting point is 00:05:51 And as you head down the stairs, there is a broom sweeping itself in the hallway, this like animated broom. Get out of the way! I told you, during the night. Not during the day? I walk these holes. And as you head down the stairs into the main area of the tap room, you see a little bit of the tap room, you see a familiar face sitting at a table. Doran, Iron Fist, has finally graced the tap room. Doran! Oh! You old so-and-so?
Starting point is 00:06:24 Good morning, Red. Red runs over and throws his arms around Doran. Oh, my God. When the hell did you get here? I got here about just an hour ago. It's about time you woke up. I've already had two breers here. Beers here.
Starting point is 00:06:38 Two bros. Liff and Red. makes the notion to like, slow it down. We got a long day. He sees this and immediately gives a big thumbs up. No, no, you can keep them coming. Red, trust me, this is all good. I haven't had a drink in months.
Starting point is 00:06:54 I've been back at the Army, helping train. I tell you, it's more exciting, exhilaring than anything. But you know what? I woke up earlier this week and I thought to myself, I'm getting bored and I feel like going on a bit of an adventure. Maybe I'll go see my friend Red. So that's when I gave you a quick letter, and I thought I'd come down here and see you myself.
Starting point is 00:07:17 Letter. Oh, oh. Redd, like, leans back and looks through like a manager's door to like a... There's like a pile. Like a sinking pile of like bills and letters that like, like, it just like sloths off the desk and lands in a trash can that says filed. And he's like, right, right. Oh, of course.
Starting point is 00:07:33 Well, hey, I'm so glad you here. I've missed you. Well, I miss you too. Oh, man. Yeah. Getting back and gee, I want to hear all about it. Why don't you grab a coffee
Starting point is 00:07:44 or something and come sit next to it? Coffee. No, no, no, no. I don't but any of that poison in me. Rum, please, lift. Yeah, absolutely. The rag that was scrubbing itself across the top of the bar, like pauses
Starting point is 00:08:02 in its work. And then a bottle floats down from the counter and a little shot glass lands beside it and then seemingly pours itself a shot glass of rum and floats over to you and sits down on the table. Thank you, Liff. Doran sort of looks around and he looking for somebody and he says,
Starting point is 00:08:27 Hey, Red, you haven't seen Tamil, have you? I mean, I thought I'd send her a letter as well and just see what was going on. Maybe, you know, we could go for a stroll in the willerness and hunt some, you know, find something to do. No, no. After we all, you know, had our separate ways to take a bit of a break after his silvery moon, I haven't. I haven't been in touch. I thought maybe you and her would have spoken.
Starting point is 00:08:54 Well, admittedly, I, you know, I kind of went out of my way to make myself useful in other manners. I felt like I was pretty amped up at the end of that. battle there and I thought, why not? You don't think she, uh, you know? No, I don't think she joined the giants at all. No, no, no, not join the giants. Wait a minute, you don't, you don't think, you don't think she's gone after the giants in the ordaining without us.
Starting point is 00:09:20 Oh, I mean, I hope not. No. No. I mean, after all, I mean, it's still going on, right? Oh, of course. Yeah, and I'm raring, raring to get back out there. You, you, you, you bet you, any, any day. You know, any moment I'm ready to go.
Starting point is 00:09:38 Red, red. It's all right. I'm reading you. Any winks an eye? Listen. I'm going to tell you right now, I'm in no rush to get back out myself. It kind of scares me a bit to think how close to peril we came.
Starting point is 00:09:54 Who? Peril? Yeah. Then again. Ha, it doesn't scare me a bit. Me neither. Not at all. Shakily red lifts a glass and sips it.
Starting point is 00:10:04 I think Dorn takes that cue and also. Also sips it. From Reds glass, you take his rum, his shot glass? No, no, no. He just, that was mine. Dornel, like, starts a sentence and then stops and takes a swig of his own beer. Look, it's not that I'm scared to get out there or nervous of the peril. No.
Starting point is 00:10:21 It's just a thing. There's so much to do here, really. I, I, I, this, the floor needs to be swept. Well, you know, magical brooms can only do so much. And God, they really can't do corners very well. I agree. Plus, who is that kind of fear in their lives? I mean, really after today, I'll get back to the camp and start training the next group of young dwars who really have no clue about life in general.
Starting point is 00:10:47 And they just seem to, all they want to do is. Yeah, and Red is still wearing his, like, tavernly clothes, which is like a sort of like a waistcoat and like a loose fitting, almost like a piratey shirt and sort of these hiked up britches. Like a tunic, like a belted tunic. Yeah, like a belted tunic and like a leather vest. And, you know, he looks the most put together that you've seen him. And Doran's got on, you look at Doran, and he's wearing the same equipment as last time. He would never get rid of that breastplate of distant glory or the flame reavers grieves. But, you know, he's got this lapel, like this sergeant lapel, and he's looking a little bit more proper.
Starting point is 00:11:30 Like, there's sort of this era of he's working for the army again, you know. Well, then it's settled. We'll never head back and stop the giant threat ever again. And Red lifts his like little glass. And then Doran's Ferry gives a look at the side of your eye and also lives a glass. Never again. And then you both feel a hand land on your shoulders. It wasn't me.
Starting point is 00:11:53 And Tamil leans in between you and says, All right, then, our adventuring days are behind us. And damn all the souls that will suffer in our absence. Timil. To meo! And Red throws his arms around you. Hello, boys. Yeah, she scoops you both into a big hug.
Starting point is 00:12:10 Where the hell have you been? We were just talking about it. You know, I had lots of ideas roaming the world, seeing the country. Did you get my letters or is this just coincidence? Tell me you got my letters. I got your letters, yes. They arrived in silver moon, safe and sound. Oh, good.
Starting point is 00:12:26 At least somebody got them. I said I got them. Unfortunately, I couldn't steal away until just now. Sorry for the delay. That's all right. Great timing. Where were you? Tamil kind of like settle
Starting point is 00:12:35 She walks around the table She settles into the Under a bench across from you too And makes a gesture At the rag for a drink Yeah, it's the ghost bartender You remember, Liff? Maybe I didn't introduce you
Starting point is 00:12:50 Liff, this is Temeil She drinks for free Nice to meet you, Liff I'll have what he's having Points to Red's glass Grog If it's possible that like A bottle and a glass
Starting point is 00:13:04 can serve themselves in in like a surly way that happens. Oh, that's cool. Like one of those fancy bartenders? Lans so heavy on the table. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But it's like just the... Yeah, yeah, yeah. So like the bottle spins, whatever,
Starting point is 00:13:22 and then slams down, like, slops a little bit of booze out onto the table. It's a neat trick. On the house. What do you mean? Are they all on the house? We'll have another one, Lyft. Not for him. We keep charging.
Starting point is 00:13:35 Ah, Timiel, continue. I was in Silvery Moon. I was trying to help with some of the repairs. And also, I was hoping to get a little more information on some of the loose threads from when we parted. Oh, yeah. So I tried to gather some information. I can fill you in on all of that later after some rolls, presumably. What about you, Red?
Starting point is 00:14:02 What have you been up to? you're looking very casual. Oh, well, you know, when we left, Doran sort of headed east off to Gray Mountain Peaks, his home. Wim, Witted, and I sort of kept heading south, and then Wittitted chumped off and did his own thing with the Von and Dodd. And Wimmy and I came back to Waterdeep, and, well, you know, she's been kicking around here and there.
Starting point is 00:14:25 She's got a room just upstairs. And then I thought I'd head back out, do a little bit more adventuring. So I had a little bit of a adventuring stint. Red looks nervously between the two. You did? Yeah, well, you know. You mean with others? Other adventurers?
Starting point is 00:14:48 Yeah, well, and Red sort of like nervously looks over his shoulder behind him and there's like a hanging board above a table in the center that says like signups here and like, you know, like a well scuffed lineup. position behind. Yeah, well, you know, look, I, I, I knew that we all wanted a little bit of a break from from the larger, pun intended problem of the giants. And I thought, I didn't want to get rusty, you know, so, well, I started holding auditions for, for adventuring parties. And, uh, and that's how Red Rovers, too, came to be. And we, we got out there and started, you know, helping, Helping just like it was when we started.
Starting point is 00:15:28 You know, it was quite fun. We got into some real shenanigans. Oh, shenanigans. You, uh, you, uh, had another, there wasn't a, there wasn't a dwarf, was there in your party? Oh, Doran, no, no, no, God, no, there was. I wouldn't have blamed you if, if you had a willing. Not until Reds Rovers three. Oh.
Starting point is 00:15:55 Red Rovers 2, well, you know how we always say keep an eye out for traps and make sure you keep your head on a swivel? Yeah. Yeah, they weren't great at that. But anyway, I came back, rearing to go with another party after, you know, they... It was boulders. Boulders got them. Not from giants, just boulders. But Red Rovers 3 did have a dwarf, but he was nothing like you.
Starting point is 00:16:30 He didn't even have a beard. He was very handsome, and I think he had a thing with the other elf in the party. It was very interesting. Oh, you're not talking about Tornatius. Tenacious? No. No, no, no, no, no, no. This was Tornatius's second cousin, Gornatius.
Starting point is 00:16:50 Gornatius. You mean, you talk to him? You got to work with him? with him? Yes, well, I ventured with them. We had ventured for three or four days. She's probably one of the most handsomest dwarves ever to live on this earth, Tenacious and Gornatius. He was. What? He was. He's ugly now? Well, I mean, it depends. No, actually, it was a giant ball. Oh. Just gourd him to death. Oh.
Starting point is 00:17:22 Unfortunate name. He was bored. Gatius, got gourd to death. Talk about Nominatory of Determinism, hey? He was gourd. Yeah. Red, how many Reds rovers have there been now? Oh, hell, I mean, you know, listen. By nine, I really thought there might have been this pattern that I was creating.
Starting point is 00:17:41 Nine! Torne spits out his beer. Nine was when I realized there might have been a slope. But, look, the numbers don't really matter. What matters is that the original Reds rovers are back to. together, ready to retire, to get real deep into a pot of dishes. And I think together, with our heads working as one, we can really turn this into a profitable, you know, endeavor.
Starting point is 00:18:10 And really, isn't that what adventureing is all about, profit? By the way, I've spent all of our money. Oh. Yeah, yeah. I was going to open with that. But remember how I was sort of in charge of everything? Yeah, with that bag of holding. Keep holding it.
Starting point is 00:18:30 Yeah, well, as it turns out, when you, you know, have patrons, you need to spend money on people to serve those patrons. And Redleens close. And you'd be surprised at how much a ghost asks for. But provisions and, you know, taxes and back taxes and paying off people for being laid on your taxes. Red, that was, that was, that was, that was, that was, that was, so much, so much gold.
Starting point is 00:18:56 Like, there is more than enough to, I'm sure, pay for many. Right, well, when you think about it, paying adventurers that die, I guess I could have taken the money back. Well, listen, I'm not too concerned about the money.
Starting point is 00:19:11 Tamil? No, I'm more concerned about what happened out there, Red. Why don't you want to go back out? Oh! Are you really, wanting to settle in here. I mean,
Starting point is 00:19:25 this, I just, I'm just happy with being here. Can I roll an insight check on Red who's acting a little squirrely? Please.
Starting point is 00:19:41 Okay, great. I rolled a 24 insight. As Timil was walking up, she heard them agreeing. Not just jokingly, it seemed, that maybe we didn't need to go back out anymore and now talking about how he was so eager and was adventuring with other people.
Starting point is 00:19:57 She's sensing something uncomfortable maybe that he's not trying to say. So 24 insight. Yeah, Red is lying. It's very clear that something happened and it wasn't just the copious amounts of death. It was something, because he's used to that and you're used to that. You can tell that something happened that scared him. But you know, Tavern owners.
Starting point is 00:20:24 Isn't that really why we got into adventuring? Come on. It seems like we're going to need several more rounds. Tameel, I think, isn't going to touch this right now, but he wants to set the stage for more honest conversation through alcohol. Fair enough. Naturally. She'll order more drinks.
Starting point is 00:20:47 Perfect. In the meantime, let me show you your rooms. Hell yeah. Yeah. There are many options. So the first floor of the Trollscul Manor is mostly business. So you got like the kitchens and the bar area and there's like a private room with some like red upholstered furniture. And then there's kind of the tap room proper and a big blazing hearth. And it's very beautiful. The second floor is
Starting point is 00:21:16 where the accommodations start. There's like a parlor area where, um, where, where like a large group can gather. But then there's also like several private rooms. And then there's a conservatory and a big front balcony. The third floor, that's where Red's room is. There's some other accommodations. Wim lives up on the fourth floor. Looks like Doran's taken over a sitting room and a small bedroom.
Starting point is 00:21:47 Love that. Yeah, Doran kind of came in this morning and dropped his gear. What else is on the fourth floor? Is it like an attic? There's an attic space. Yeah. So Wim's got like, so there are essentially three rooms on the top floor. There's a tower, which is only connected to Red's bedroom. Wim's got her own room there. It looks extremely messy. And then there's a second larger attic room that right now looks like it's mostly storage, but you can definitely move in there for sure. I mean, temporarily, I don't know how long you guys are going to stay in water deep, but, but, we'll see. I think as we're kind of touring around, Doran leans into Temeel. I kind of picture Red leading the way. Out of my way, Broom! Like me and Tammel kind of trailing behind.
Starting point is 00:22:34 And Doreen sort of leans into Tammel and says, you don't really want to go back out there, do you? I hadn't even considered not. I mean, there is still the ordaining to deal with. There are still threats that I think we are uniquely. equipped to deal with. There are still so many people we could help. But
Starting point is 00:22:56 I would never force either of you if you were no longer drawn to this life. No, no, no, no, no, no. Let me be clear, Timile, I was I'm kind of hoping that we can convince Red to go back out. Although, at this point,
Starting point is 00:23:13 it might sound more like I need that convincing. Although I don't. I think I was just looking for one of you to take the lead. But don't tell Red that. Tameel smiles and puts a hand on Doran's shoulder. I miss you. Confusing as ever.
Starting point is 00:23:28 Anyway. I miss you too. Look at these rooms. And this is your own room if you want it to be, Red says, like hopping down from the fourth story to the third. Whimmy's up there, but also you can take up there if you want right across the hall from Wimmy. Lots of options. But this is going to be it, guys. Red puts his hands on both of you.
Starting point is 00:23:45 We'll be here forever. We never need to leave. Everything we want is here. And anything we don't want, we can Uber eats it. Uber is an orc that lives next door. It's a rat person. Yeah, he's got a giant rat. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:00 That sounds like a plan. Would you like some of this? She holds out the bottle that she's brought up to the top floor with her. Oh, sure. Red takes a big swig. Yeah, Doran kind of gives Tamil a look, and he gives her a wink and a nod. Oh, how? You just want to stay here, hey, Red?
Starting point is 00:24:22 Oh, yeah, don't we all? Never need to get out there. Never need to risk it again. This is the life, guys. That's a good morning liqueur. You hear a reedy voice from the first floor calling up the stairs. I'm just clocking in for my shift, boss. Hurry up.
Starting point is 00:24:45 Who's that? Dornel. Yeah, Dornel. She's an elderly halfling woman, and she has been traveling around. She showed up last week asking if you needed help with anything in exchange for, like, room and board for, like, the next two weeks while she's in town. Listen, Dornel's the worst. Don't let it touch any of your shit. She keeps messing up the settings of my bed.
Starting point is 00:25:14 I got the straw right where I like it. Yeah, yeah. She, like, does laundry and cooks. sometimes. I picture her like entering, walking past right then like busying herself fluffing up Red's bed like right. Stop it! I said stop it!
Starting point is 00:25:29 But don't worry you guys are going to learn all the ins and outs of how to run a tavern. Hopefully better than I do, we owe so much money. How much exactly? Well, owed I suppose. But the bills will come back. They always come back.
Starting point is 00:25:47 Look, it's fine. rented out the basement to a gambling person. He seems real fine. And he said he's going to make a lot of money for us. So that'll feed back into the business. I'm learning lots of words called like synergy and synergistic pyramid scheme and MLM. No, it's going to be great. And you guys can all help me understand it and I can help you. It's going to be really fun. This is our life now. I'm so exciting. Why don't we go meet your gambling friend? Yes.
Starting point is 00:26:24 Let's just see what he's like. Yeah, let's go. Tanny sleeps in the basement and he runs this whole thing. They even have a, there's like a door out to the street that he lets people in. It's real legit. Hmm. Redheads downstairs. Hmm.
Starting point is 00:26:37 To the basement. He's a tortal person, so he's sort of like a big turtle. But real slick. Hey, I like those turtle people. Yeah, me too. That's why I brought him on. And he promises we're going to. get a lot of the back end, whatever that means.
Starting point is 00:26:51 Huh. And Red opens the, like, the stone stairs down to the cellar. Yeah. A beam of light gradually filters down through the gloom of the cellar and illuminates a scene of some tired chaos. There are a couple of tables that have been pushed together, and there are just like playing cards on the ground. There's like some mysterious brown fluid in the corner,
Starting point is 00:27:28 sort of like underneath some of the crates over there. And then just a big lump. Hi, Teddy. How's it going down here, guys? Out from this big lump in the middle of the floor, a couple of limbs like slowly protrude and then a big head on a long wrinkly brown neck. And he's wearing these little spectacles with dark glass in them. And he cranes his head slowly to the side to look at the three of you as you're standing at the bottom of the stairs.
Starting point is 00:28:14 and he goes, hey, man. Tenny, this is my best friend to meal or my best friend, Dorn, and they're co-owners of this bar. Surprise, guys. And they're going to be your new daddies. Well, owners, they're going to help me make everything run efficiently. So, you know, feel free to include them on any of these fun little games you have here. Names, Tenney.
Starting point is 00:28:38 Hello, Tenney. Are you card players? Oh. I've been... Do you like to... Do you like to make a little money? Is this guy on drugs?
Starting point is 00:28:53 He's a turtle. He like slowly straightens up and like opens his mouth wide in a big turtle yawn. He's got like weird gray kind of like goop in the corners of his big mouth.
Starting point is 00:29:07 Like gold teeth? Yeah. The turtle equivalent. Yeah. His beak is like Captain Gold. How are, How did you and Red meet, Tenney? Oh, it was a wonderful story, Tenney. Tell her everything.
Starting point is 00:29:20 Well, I met Red when he was out getting some supplies. That was Red's Rovers' Six. He told me that he was looking for someone to show him the ropes, you know. I was looking to buy some new rope because we had to go down a hole. Total misunderstanding, but what fun. As it turns out, Red knows how to have a lot of fun. He really liked my no-rules atmosphere and seems to be really leaning into that.
Starting point is 00:29:53 I see. He, like, pulls his glasses down onto the bridge of his long, beaky nose, and he says, Red likes to play cards. Cards, anything, really. Look, a shell. Red, like, loops a shell from a shell game and, like, extra things. fall out from underneath it. He gives you like a big grin and then just nod slowly.
Starting point is 00:30:20 Red, how much of the money that didn't go towards paying your adventuring friends or the stuff for the inn here, how much of it has been, let's say, surrendered at these tables? Oh, uh, and Redd looks embarrassed. Not as much as I'd like. Tenney only got to move in last week. But don't worry. As soon as we get more, I'll be sure to win some money for the adventuring party again.
Starting point is 00:30:48 You do get the impression that Red, like, is an idiot in the finances, but not in the gambling. Okay. He has many dumb vices, but it's not gambling. All right. Well, just to be sure, Tamila's going to cast and large reduce on herself. She's going to pick this tortoise up and put him up against a wall. Wow! All right, Tenney.
Starting point is 00:31:09 As new co-owner of Trolls skull manner, I must insist that you, not try to steal, exploit, or otherwise take advantage of my friend Red or this establishment. If you do, then I will crack your shell in half, and we will mount your head above the bar. How does that sound? All right, giant ladies, listen, this is uncalled for. I never lied or cheated anybody. put me down. He's like waving his little legs.
Starting point is 00:31:45 I will punt a turtle halfway across this room. I'm a legitimate businessman. Excellent. Then we won't have any troubles at all. She'll set him down. Tempted to kind of put him on his back for a second, but then like, okay. She doesn't trust this guy. She's a little worried about Red.
