Starting point is 00:00:01 That's a lot of maps. This is the button ward. Brans, buttons. I was worried about heading back out there. Sit down. We'll be back in two days. Oh. If you so much as lay a finger on that map,
Starting point is 00:00:14 I will throw you through the front window so fast that you will know what's happened. I've been thrown through many a glass window before. Welcome back to Dyshane. This is season three, episode three, blow off the map. MVP this week is Zane, who's been catching up with the past four months on Dishane. Well, Zane, you're caught up now. So now what? I guess wait until we have more. Thank you so much, Zane. You are this week's MVP. Thanks, Zane. All right, should we play some D&D? Yeah, let's do it.
Starting point is 00:00:56 Yoohoo! Stepping out into Waterdeep can often feel like sticking your... face into a beehive. The bustle of activity is intimidating for even the most urban creature, and the industrious churn of carriage and animal traffic, merchant trade, hawkers and musicians, and the toll of bells from the abbeys, everything blends together into a background thrum. It's vanishingly rare to be outside and alone. Even in the most distant, deepest alley, One is always observed from someone hanging laundry from a fourth-story window or a patron in a corner restaurant. It is into this thrum that we step with a new purpose, Red, Tamil, Wim, and Doran together again at last.
Starting point is 00:01:59 Colourful. Red, before. I don't want you to feel like I was dismissing your concerns. You just don't seem like the type to put stock into dreams. memes and that sort of thing. Oh, Redd sort of snaps his eyes to Doran and Wim who keep going. Yeah, Wim's just like signing to Doren about all the food that she's already had today and being like real excited about all of it.
Starting point is 00:02:27 You guys, go on ahead. We'll catch up. Turning back to Temeel. Look, I've never been one for believing in fate or magics or anything like that. I've always believed, you know, we're making her own destiny out here. But, as I said, a while ago, I had this first dream. And, you know, at the time it scared me. It scared me for many reasons.
Starting point is 00:02:55 One, because it was the first kind that I've ever had that felt so real. But also, there were things in it that, well, that scared me. Like something out there was trying to tell me something. and I suppose maybe with your help maybe we can start piecing them together if you'd be willing to hear them
Starting point is 00:03:20 um yeah yes tell me about them well the first one and Red sort of starts walking slowly following Dorne and whim the first one happened a few months ago
Starting point is 00:03:33 I remember waves barnacles They always happen at sea And there's these Perlescent sky above And these humans Dozens of them
Starting point is 00:03:47 They're all walking up the beach And their skin is this burnished bronze And their clothes are snapping in the wind And then when we get to the end of this trail There's this cliff The same cliff I just dreamt of Three Ten Day ago There's the sound of the
Starting point is 00:04:06 Ocean waves back battering the island. It's definitely loud. And everything is crusted in salt and glittering and sharp. And then, two men and a woman, all three of them are holding children. One's a baby, one is silent, and one is a girl maybe four years old. And they stand on the edge of the cliff and proceed to throw them into the ocean. the waves swallowing them up fucking hells yeah
Starting point is 00:04:42 yeah you can say that again that that that was the first dream I had the second I was suspended in this deep deep water and my tiny body was against a massive backdrop of ocean
Starting point is 00:04:59 there was no seafloor or ceiling I was totally alone in the vast dark and then something impossibly huge moved below me in the darkness. The third dream I was on a beach again, but it was dark this time, and I heard the waves beating against the shore. The moon was in the sky hanging bright and round and beautiful, and then it turned into a coin. A coin that folds into my palm, and I catch it. And it was this.
Starting point is 00:05:35 Red reaches in the bag of holding. And he reveals to you a small wooden coin with a painted golden goose on it. And he hands it to you. And as you pull out this coin, Red, the image in your eye flashes from like deep, deep within. Like an animal in the darkness being caught in a mote of light. The like recognition that this came from. the infernal puzzle box that seared its way into your brain. Here, here.
Starting point is 00:06:10 Yeah, Tamil takes it and kind of turns it over and examines it. And after a couple of seconds, she will hand it back. After I catch that coin in my dream, the seaweed from the sea wraps around my feet and drags me back into the water. I woke up from that dream, having bitten my lip. I was bleeding quite badly. But in the water, I heard a voice, like a sound. The words didn't make any sense to me. Lur, gath, a maril, oothin, something like that.
Starting point is 00:06:47 It was a language I didn't recognize, and I still don't. Do I recognize any of those words? What languages do you speak, Temeel? I speak common. Noamish because of the time and still bring him with Witted and his crew. Aww, so fun.
Starting point is 00:07:04 I love that. And also just because it's this language that I pick all the time, primordial. Oh, hold on a moment. Yeah. You do know what this says. Tamil, you recognize obviously Red's
Starting point is 00:07:22 manner of speaking his accent is terrible. but you recognize these words to be primordial speech. And they say, you are mine. Was that all? If there's more... Yeah, I mean, I said a few things, but I don't know. It's all gibberish nonsense.
Starting point is 00:07:45 Can you just try to remember it? Oh, Lurag. Am I you lose then? Do... Ephraimgar... I feel silly saying this. No, it is a language, and those words... It means, you are mine.
Starting point is 00:08:12 Find me in the trackless sea. Red stops walking. Oh, hold on. What are you saying? That's something I dreamed about months ago. This nonsense is actually... A language? These are words?
Starting point is 00:08:28 Where's the trackless sea? Joe, can I roll to see if I know what the trackless sea is? Um, you can roll, uh, roll history. Red, you can also roll. You took a very long sea voyage, didn't you? Yeah, that's true. To get to, uh, Fyroon. Happily.
Starting point is 00:08:47 So you will have traveled some waters somewhere. I don't know the exact geography between Mazca and- History as well? Yep. Perfect. I'm in a negative one. Great. It's a roll off, folks.
Starting point is 00:08:59 I got a natural one. No. Nope. I got a five, which comes out to a four. Yeah, no sea you've ever heard of. You know that the ocean directly to the west of water deep is known as the Sea of Swords. In fact, you are on the Sword Coast. But the trackless sea is a place maybe colloquially known to sailors or at least nowhere you've ever heard of.
Starting point is 00:09:24 Damn. Well, I mean, listen, not only that in my dreams, but remember how I told you that my ears and tail were removed by Mithrin, and you pointed out that it was a local name for a town or a village on an island? There was a fourth dream, too, the one before this last one. It was a alpine stream that was moving through a pristine winter valley, the sunlight reflecting off the surface of the snow. It was beautiful. and the prow of a ship carved through dark blue waves.
Starting point is 00:09:58 It's bonnacled, howl trailing sea grass. It was creaking and groaning. And then a shadow of a huge shark, silhouetted against the surface of the water from underneath. And then the shark jumps out of the water and catches the ladder with a human hand. And it climbs up on deck and breathes and reveals itself to be. be a man, a shape-shifter, and then climbs off the boat onto the docks of Yarder. That coin belongs to a gambling boat that docks at Yada, a boat that we've never been on, but clearly has something to do with my dreams. My goodness, this is all very detailed. There's more here than I can
Starting point is 00:10:53 make sense of now, but... You're telling me, I've been living with this, dreaming of this for the past two months. It's been keeping me up at night, and obviously, it's part of the reason that I... I was worried about heading back out there.
Starting point is 00:11:10 Red, who had stopped at the mention of the trackless sea that starts walking again in the vague direction of Doran and Wim, who are up ahead. I just... I just... I guess I didn't really trust anyone enough to want to help me see it through.
Starting point is 00:11:30 Timil kind of smiles and she says, well, I appreciate you telling me. And this feels as though it is somewhat in line with our path forward or a possible path. Yeah, I mean, I suppose between Mithrin and the trackless sea and just the strange visions of the ocean and those cliffs. Yeah, I think our direction is westbound. One thing, and perhaps this is simply because I did not experience these dreams myself, but I do wonder, what if this isn't a warning? What do you mean?
Starting point is 00:12:13 Well, what if it's a request for help? What if you're being shown a danger that something or someone thinks you might. be able to assist with. I guess I never thought of it that way. I suppose it could be. You know, I've never gotten to speak with anyone openly about them. And truth be told,
Starting point is 00:12:39 I guess I never really put a pin on what it could be. It could be anything, but, and here again, she'll kind of like put a hand on your shoulder. An important thing to remember now is that Redd, you don't have to face this alone. We'll be there with you. we'll figure this out. We've been in some pretty tight scrapes in the past.
Starting point is 00:13:00 Yeah. We'll figure this out too. Thanks, Tamele. Well, hey, you know, maybe Red sort of slows his walk to like a bit of a crawl. You know, I mean, while we're talking about this, a map can't be hard to find. The trackless sea is clearly a place that we could just look up, and I'm pretty sure down this alley there's a small little shop. Doran Wim will take this sweet time
Starting point is 00:13:25 getting to the Thadomansus place Why don't we just slip off, check it out and catch up with them after? Of course. Let me just send a quick message. We're still over Rarys, so I think just a quick message off to Doren letting him know that we'll be right behind you.
Starting point is 00:13:43 We're just going to make a quick stop. Yeah, like through the crowds of people on the sidewalk, you just see like Wim's arm shoot up in acknowledgement. and then disappear back into the thrum of people. Yeah, just down here. It's Marco's Maps, I believe. Just so we're clear, when we walk into Marco's Maps, are we going to receive a friendly or neutral welcome,
Starting point is 00:14:09 or should we preparing for something else? Oh, definitely friendly. In fact, I had to steal a few maps to sell to Marco, so he owes me a favor, if I'm not mistaken. Excellent. I love having the upper. hand. Let's go. Yeah. As you've been traveling from the northward to the castle ward of Waterdeep, you are heading vaguely southwest. And to the north of the castle ward, there's the sea ward.
Starting point is 00:14:38 And then to the south of the castle ward, there's the dock ward. But all of it is kind of on the coast of water deep. So you are heading seaward, if not specifically toward the docks, regardless. sailors and nautical types do traverse these streets and alleys and frequent all of the taverns and inns and the shops that you pass here. Here and there there are like places selling sailing equipment, rope shops. Buttons! Get your buttons. Get your buttons here. Got buttons here.
Starting point is 00:15:16 I got the resin. I got the, what you call them, these metal ones. you know. Bronze buttons. Bronze buttons. And then right next to him, button shine her. Yeah. Button shine your buttons.
Starting point is 00:15:30 They're in league together. You know they are. There's a guy in the shadows who's waiting. You only sell me scuffed buttons. He's waiting to trip you so your buttons fall into the mud. Right next to the button cleaner. Oh, it's a racket. Button reattatcher.
Starting point is 00:15:43 I'm the button reattatcher. There's like a well positioned grate on the street. Exactly. When you'd fall and you drop your buttons, they all roll in. It's a real racket. sewer guy. Exactly. He's waiting for those buttons.
Starting point is 00:15:55 He brings them back up to the, that's why they're so scuffed. You guys aren't actually in the button ward, but that is just... Careful here, Timmil. This is the button ward. I've heard stories about this place. Hold on your buttons.
Starting point is 00:16:07 No, but there are places selling like exotic animals that sailors like to keep as their pets, you know, the parrots and the monkeys and the sailing dogs, of which there are many. Sailing dogs. Gotta have a dog on that.
Starting point is 00:16:20 You know, peg legs. stores and stores that sell feathers that go in your hat. I love pegleg stores. You know. Hook stores. Hook stores. It's the book store and the hook store. Pirate prostheses.
Starting point is 00:16:35 The hook nook. Thank you, Harlan. Ten points to Harlan Dor. What? I do like the idea that there are ship dogs the way there are Dalmatians. Of course. But like a specific breed. Yes.
Starting point is 00:16:48 So like Dalmatians are the fire truck dogs. Yeah. Well, they have to have long enough legs to easily ascend big stairs, which I feel like. Wouldn't cats be a better ship thing? Because they hunt the rats. They can climb the riggings. Right. Ship cats.
Starting point is 00:17:05 I feel like a ship cat is the right way to go. Get ship cats. Poodles and retrievers, I feel like would jump in the water and grab a... And never come back. So many poodles drowned at sea. Until ship cats got found out There was a lot of drowned poodles That's terrible
Starting point is 00:17:28 I like ship cats That's smart though There's got to be a breed of cat That's like a portmanteau I don't know cat breed I feel like water deep You know how cities are either cat Cities or dog cities
Starting point is 00:17:39 Oh I see what you're saying Italy's got a lot of cat I don't know whatever But like I feel like water deep's got a lot of cats Because there's like a lot of wizards But then like a lot of like rats at the dock and stuff. So water deep, definitely, tressums, a lot of street tressoms,
Starting point is 00:17:54 a lot of street cats, and they either get bought up by Carl's cats or else they find their way out onto a vessel bound for who knows where, nestled cozily in between all of these ship type stores, you find your way to Marco's maps. As they're closer to the door of Marco's maps,
Starting point is 00:18:19 Tamil will once again stab red and she'll lean in a little bit and she'll say, listen, sometimes sailors give names to things, islands, parts of the ocean, trade routes that are a bit secret. They're not commonly used. And depending on which sailor you're speaking to or which pirate you're speaking to, using that name can be a little dicey. So let's tread a bit carefully, shall we? Yes, agreed. Also, let's tread carefully because I did sell Marco those maps, but I forged one of them.
Starting point is 00:18:58 Okay. I don't know if he found out. All right. You push on the door of Marco's maps and the little bell dingles at the top. As you make your way into the shop, there's no other customers in here at this time of day. But it is open, you know. Marco's Maps is always open. The shop smells of map oil.
Starting point is 00:19:23 And as adventurers, you know, ah, this shop's deals in maps. Oh, and don't mention his height. He's very sensitive about it. All right. Coming around the corner from a back room with ink-stained hands and a stature that grazes the top of the ceiling, a hunched man who is part. Part, Goliath, the hulking shape of Marco himself comes into view.
Starting point is 00:19:54 He's got a very distinctive gate, a step drag, step drag, as he is one of the proud owners of the peg leg, perhaps from the store next door, Pete's prostheses. Marco spies you, red, and you to meal with his worn good eye. and scowls a little bit. Scowls? Marco, it's the morning. This is my best friend, Temeel, Temeel, Marco, Marco, Temeel. Good morning. Timil turns to say hello.
Starting point is 00:20:27 And for some reason, she was expecting when he said that he was sensitive about his height, was expecting a real short guy. So she turns around and she goes, holy shit. Uh, that's a lot of maps. Look at this. Play, so many maps. An attractive blush colors his cheeks
Starting point is 00:20:47 as he stares proudly around at the amount of the sheer volume of maps. There are cases of maps, glass cases, the rare ones, of course, being protected from the dust. There are scroll cabinets
Starting point is 00:21:04 all along the walls with maps hastily shoved in and amongst the diamond-shaped slots. There are are maps tacked to the ceiling. The floor is a carpet that has worked to look like a map of water deep. And Marco says, Oh, thank you very much.
Starting point is 00:21:28 Red, who is this? I just said, Tamil, but that's okay. Maybe your ears are full of cotton. It's a pleasure to meet you. Red walks forward. You know, you stiffed me last time on the job. Red, like, looks back to Tamil and winks, like, as if he's got to play.
Starting point is 00:21:42 And he goes back. I gave you two really good maps, and you sure changed me. They were covered in chicken grease. Well, that wasn't my fault, was it? There's a delicious chicken shop down the lane. Red, which one? There's actually two down there. Chubby's chickens better than Chubby Checkers.
Starting point is 00:21:59 Chubby Checkers sells a lot of chest things. They're both chubby? Yes. Of course. They're owned by brothers. The Chubbies. John Chubby and Jinky Chubby. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:22:10 Stop. Write all this down. It's law. Just wildly creating, just vamping. Listen here, Marco. I want to shoot straight with you. If you shoot straight with me, okay? I don't know why you always come in here firing on both cylinders.
Starting point is 00:22:26 Ah, you know, I'm a fiery guy. Look, we'll call it even, okay? We'll help each other. Bring it down. Calm down. It's fine. Red puts his hand on the giant's hand. All right, we've gotten that over with.
Starting point is 00:22:37 We're all even, everyone's friends again. Okay, let's talk. He looks over Red's head at Temeel and kind of, like, quizzically. Temeel is baffled by Red's negotiation style and just like shrugs a little, but has a big smile on her face. Can we take a seat, please? Yeah, of course. Do you have seats? Yeah, he gestures over to like... That's a seat?
Starting point is 00:22:57 God, it's giant! I mean... A very small table in the corner with three very small chairs, and he kind of like folds himself up into one of them. It's like a parent that goes to like a kindergarten's class. classroom for parent teacher like that. Oh, sorry. I saw you point at that tiny footstool. Yeah, let's all calm down.
Starting point is 00:23:21 Red joins and sits down. Please. Tea? He's got like a very small tea pot and pours three tiny glasses of tea. Thank you. Very hospitable. It's kind of elbowing. What do you need?
Starting point is 00:23:37 Is this caffeinated tea? Yes. I feel like you need to tell. It is? Okay. Deeply caffeinated. Wait, deeply? Like more than a cup of coffee?
Starting point is 00:23:44 I don't drink coffee. I don't put that poison in me. This is at least three times the caffeine. Fah! Do you have grog? Yes. Okay, I'll wait. Tea?
Starting point is 00:23:54 Thank you. I believe there was mention of grog, sorry. He stands up. Thank you. Goes behind the counter. And Red turns out, Tameel. Listen, Tameel. I cheated him last time, so I came in fiery and hot
Starting point is 00:24:07 in order to create a false sense of conflict. Put him on his back heel, yes. And then I solve the conflict immediately, giving him the sense that whatever wrongdoing I've done in the past has already been fixed. See? It's the red method. Excellent. Create it. Destroy it.
Starting point is 00:24:26 Execute. He comes back to the table with a little pint glass, and he's about to slide it over to you red, and then he's like... Do you mind if I just take a look at your hands, please? I washed them yesterday. All right, here you go. I don't like you touching all the stuff in here with dirty hands. That happened one time, and I thought it made some beautiful wall art. Red points to the far wall where a map has been hung.
Starting point is 00:24:52 It's like centuries old, and there's like cat paw prints all over the bottom corner from where he touched it last time. I signed it. Anyway, Red takes a big sip of rock. This is a little tricky. We're looking for a body of water that we don't exactly. know the location of, and we aren't fully sure of the name either. It could be translated from a different language. What language was that, anyway? Primordial. Oh, so ancient. Fascinating. To tell me everything. Red, you know that I like a good
Starting point is 00:25:30 puzzle. And that's why I said to Temeel, I said to Tameel, didn't I say this to Timmiel? I said, two minutes ago, just down the lane, I said, you know what we need to go to? Marco's Maps. He did. He did. He did say that. Because Marco likes a good riddle. Riddle me this. Where lies the trackless sea? Hmm. Mm.
Starting point is 00:25:51 Timil's watching Marco closely when that name is said for any, like, flicker of, like, recognition or concern. Yeah. Roll insight for sure. That is 21. Okay. Yeah. He absolutely knows. what you're talking about.
Starting point is 00:26:11 Okay. But from the words that he's saying, maybe not making it out like that so much. He's like, Oh, yeah. Trackless C. Huh. That's the mystery indeed.
Starting point is 00:26:25 One moment. And he takes a pencil out from behind his ear and a little pad of paper from one of the pockets on his tunic, and he starts scribbling down the word trackless C. And he starts, he's doing like anagram, puzzle, like he's like
Starting point is 00:26:41 working it out like it's a cipher almost. Red leans back and sort of whispers into Emile's ear. He's never going to solve this one. We should cut our losses and run. I don't know if that's true, Red. I think that he might actually know
Starting point is 00:26:56 what this is. Why is he lying? That is an excellent question. Fascinating. Fascinating. I think I can help you. There aren't many who know the location. but I think I have a reference to one such body of water. Please stay here.
Starting point is 00:27:19 He gets up, scrapes the chair back along the floor and moves to one of the walls. His fingers start like dancing across the scrolls until he finds what he's looking for and he pulls it out and he brings it over the table and unrolls it in front of you. And it is a map of the ocean, the Sea of Swords and the archipelago of islands that just lie to the west. And to people who have made the crossing before, it's like a quasi-familiar array. And he circles with a wide finger, an area in the ocean that lie just between the moon-tile,
Starting point is 00:28:08 Shay Isles and he shows you sort of like a vague spot and he says this this is known to some as the trackless sea though to other sailors it is known as the deep deep and then he turns his paper around and you see where he's like really laboriously rearranged the letters of the trackless sea and like change changed it into a couple of different languages ostensibly until it becomes like the deep deep or something as like his rationale for why it has this this nickname margot who who would know this as the trackless sea well some of the best sailors would most of the sailors do know that most of them interesting red sort of gives a raised eyebrow to tamil like is you telling the truth again Can I cast detect thoughts on our friend of Marco real quick? I'm not going to push deep so he doesn't have to make the say. This is just surface. You learn what is most on the target's mind right now. So basically we're talking about this. I just asked about the trackless scene,
Starting point is 00:29:23 so I'm trying to get an idea. Yeah. He's thinking of a different map right now. Tamil will relay that over Rarys. There's another map he's thinking of. Red sort of nods to Temeel stands up. Well, all right, thanks. Thanks, Marco.
Starting point is 00:29:41 It's been a real help. And he walks towards the door. Timul will get up and... And he locks it. Oh. Timul will get up and then she'll see the door lock and then she'll sit back down. Crazy, isn't it? Red, like, slowly walks along the back wall and he's like touching all the things.
Starting point is 00:30:00 You and I have been friends for so long, Marco. And he reaches the wall with the big map. on it. Now Red, let's not do anything hasty. Hasty? Who's doing anything hasty? And Red dips one of his fingers into like ink. No one's doing anything hasty. Marco stands up so fast that the chair behind him slams onto the ground. You watch it, big boy! If you so much as lay a finger on that map, I will throw you through the front window so
Starting point is 00:30:32 fast that you will know what's happened. I've been thrown through many a glass. window before. And he takes his second finger and he dips in the ink. Now red. I'm going to get the whole paw wet. Now red,
Starting point is 00:30:51 I don't understand why you would want to ruin this man's maps any more than I understand why he's lying to us about the answers to these questions that we're asking. I thought we were all friends here. The blush like blanches from his cheeks and he turns down
Starting point is 00:31:07 to look at you, Temeel. What are you saying? Listen, we have no desire to get you into trouble, but it's obvious that you know more than you're saying. It's obvious, she points to the map that he was kind of like indicating with the Treclosier. It's obvious that this is not the map that you want to be looking at right now. Surely we can come to some sort of agreement. It's no use, Tamil.
Starting point is 00:31:33 He only responds to one thing. And Red, wets his whole little paw in it and holds it over it. the map and he stamps a print on it. Whoa. Red. He lifts it up and it's like comically over like the foxglove aisle. It's like like a perfect little paw print like accidentally just worked out well. Marcos storms across the store and grabs your little foxy hand by the wrist.
Starting point is 00:32:02 Don't do that. Stop it. And shoves it into your pocket so that it can't do any more damage. Fighting tries to dip the other one. It's no use Temeel is the only thing he'll respond to. Red, I have had enough. Tamil takes static off her back and slams the butt of the sphere into the ground. And there's this like reverberating, thunderous, like boom throughout the store.
Starting point is 00:32:26 Maybe the windows even crackle a little. And she'll say, all right, boys. Now let's just take it down a notch, shall we? Oh, don't make it do it, Marco. and Red wraps his other hand around Marco's cheek. Don't make her do it. She's so violent. She'll kill us both, I swear. Just tell her what she wants to know, Marco.
Starting point is 00:32:45 And as he turns back to you, Temeel, like, having half wrestling with Red, he's got, like, wet eyes at this point. And he's like... Every time with this guy, he comes in here, he touches my wares. The things that he sells me are covered in chicken grease. It adds flavor and character. And all I ever get is crap from him. Red, please. Oh, don't act no high, mighty.
Starting point is 00:33:12 You sell fake treasure maps to people. That was one time. It was 17 times, I know. Another slam of static into the ground. Listen. Tell her what she wants to know, Marco, please. He started it. I don't care who started it.
Starting point is 00:33:26 Now, you both sit down. Red sits down. He sits down on the floor. Right. Red. apologize to Marco for destroying his map. Marco, I'm sorry your map's better looking. Marco?
Starting point is 00:33:41 Red has apologized. Do you have anything you'd like to say to him now? Why did you lie, Marco? That's all I want to know. Why wouldn't you tell us where the trackless see is? There's a better map. What? There's a better map.
Starting point is 00:33:57 May we see the better map if Red promises not to get anything on it? One second. goes back behind the counter and he gets a like a little bag. Good play. Tameel fist bumps Red, just like surreptitiously. Great job. Yeah, nice. And then he comes back with this little bag, like a little drawstring, like a, like a little, like a dice bag kind of thing. And he like wordlessly just puts it around Red's hand and like draws the drawstring closed and it ties it in a little bow.
Starting point is 00:34:27 So his hand is covered by the bag? Yeah, he's got like a little, his inky hand has just got a little. a baggie on it. Red just looks at it. I don't hate this. I quite like this, actually. This is cool. This might be a new thing.
Starting point is 00:34:39 It's a good color on you. Look, look to me. And he like poses a little bit. Yeah. Cool, right? It matches your tunic. Bag hand. Bag hand.
Starting point is 00:34:46 I can make a new like thing. Baghand. People would be like, why is I wearing a bag on his hand? And I was like, baghand. If you ever need an alternate identity, you know, for resolving mysteries or stopping crime.
Starting point is 00:34:57 Well, I mean, like, I'm talking about like a whole, like a water deep, you know, trend. Oh. end. All right. And then you're interrupted by like a, almost like a whip or like a snapping sound as Marco extends a long pointer, like a telescopic stick almost.
Starting point is 00:35:18 And he points up at the ceiling. There is this beautiful ancient map tacked to the ceiling. And Red, you know that the maps up on the ceiling are antiques for display only. not for sale. Oh. But there's this gorgeous map of the coastline. And he points at an area on the map, and it literally says the trackless sea. Just, I just want to seem cool.
Starting point is 00:35:51 What? I just want to just, I don't know. I've been working on myself lately, and it's not proud of it. Oh, Marco. A lot of people know where this is. Oh. I think you're cool. Tamil is entranced by this map on the ceiling.
Starting point is 00:36:12 I mean, from her sailor days, she's seen maps before. She knows what a map is. Yeah, of course, of course. And she's just admiring. She says, the lettering on this is stunning. Yeah, it's beautiful. Who made this? Do you know? Yeah, actually.
Starting point is 00:36:27 This is one of the... this is the nocturn original. Oh, my goodness. Should I put ink on that one instead? No. If you touch that map. And Red like gestures to the paw print, he left on the map on the wall. And almost magically, it moves.
Starting point is 00:36:46 It goes to the ceiling. And he smiles and snaps his fingers and minor illusion drops. And the whole thing that Red putting ink on his paw, him touching the wall, all of that was a minor illusion. He didn't ruin the map at all. He takes the bag off his head. shit. Come on, Marco. You look over it, Temeel.
Starting point is 00:37:03 She, she has, like, she's gripping static as if she was about to turn it on you. Because you recognize, like, the artistry and, like, this. Hey, I'm an artisan guild, baby. I know this. Look, these were accidents. And he points to the chicken grease paws from like a year ago. I would never ruin such a thing, Marco, we're friends. And he goes to kiss his cheek like a mobster, an Italian mob movie.
Starting point is 00:37:27 you get a stiff reception yeah marco sort of turning his attention up to the ceiling is pointing at various illustrations on the map and it's curious there are it's like one of those old school like hear be dragons type maps but based on your knowledge to meal of the coastline looks to be extraordinarily accurate despite its age so the map maker nocturn you're are passingly familiar with, potentially depending on how long you spent as a sailor or how closely you worked with a ship's cartographer. But her maps were once considered to be like the beyond and end all the gold standard of maps in Fyroon. Yeah, I think Temeel, not being a cartographer herself, it's kind of one of those things where it's like, you might not know
Starting point is 00:38:22 jack shit about classical music, but you know the importance of Mozart. Like you know who Beethoven is. So the name definitely, but you know what litmus test is. Yes. Yeah. It's a thing that people. Yeah. Litmus. Deaf guy. Yeah. Recognizes the name, recognizes the significance, and knows that this is like, just by looking at the qualities. Like, this is absolutely stunning. Yeah. And suspects that there are, regardless of like how decorative or ornamental some of the sea monsters and things appear.
Starting point is 00:38:51 Yeah, it's like illuminated, like a manuscript, you know. But like she knows, has no idea how to read it, but knows that. there are secrets in that map, that there's like a language, visual language that she doesn't have access to, but it can like, it's just in awe of it. And Marco sort of is like ruffling through the pages of the notepad that he had been like doing this fake ciphering on this like pretentiousness for your benefit. And he's like, I inherited that map. When I inherited this shop from my father, It's one of my prized possessions. Actually, I've spent more nights than I can think of looking at that map, dreaming.
Starting point is 00:39:35 But what it would be like to go to those places, you know, for a man who's spent so many years looking at maps, I've only left water deep a handful of times. Timiel's actually a little bit taken in by this, this idea of the desire to wander but not being, or not actually like. Marco, why haven't you tried? Why haven't you ventured forth? I guess, you know, this is my dad's shop. I wanted to stay the way that it is for memories. You know, and the only way I could make sure that it, that every morning it always looked the same as to be here every morning, I guess.
Starting point is 00:40:22 Red looks at Temeo. Like, Like a Should we? Tamil will kind of like give a hesitant little nod. Well, Pack your bags!
Starting point is 00:40:35 Within a 10 day we're going out to sea, Marco. We're going to need a navigator on our adventure across the ocean and you're it. I'm not taking no for an answer. And Tamil agrees. She nodded and said yes. So pack up, close down the shop. We'll be back in two days to fetch you for a great adventure.
Starting point is 00:40:51 Uh-huh. Um. Riches await. Red points to the map on the ceiling. You know what, Red. Um, can... Can you come back tomorrow? Well, probably two days.
Starting point is 00:41:06 We've got to do some provisions. No, I mean, like, this is a lot to take in, I guess, and, uh... You need time to think. Yeah. Is that okay? Sure. Yeah. Deeds time to think.
Starting point is 00:41:23 Listen on this chucklehead. Sure, you can think. Red does like air quotes. All right. Anyway, start making naps. We also want one of Mithrin. So that, tracklessy and... What did you say?
Starting point is 00:41:39 What? What did you say? I don't know. It was the last thing I said, Timil. End. I think it was and. A-N-D, like an, like a word that conjoins to... Mithrin?
Starting point is 00:41:48 Do you recognize that name? And sincere... intrigue now crosses his face. That I will have to research Mithran, I think. Huh. He just turns his back to you and starts going through some books. Get those sea legs ready, buddy.
Starting point is 00:42:09 We'll be picking you up in a few days. Think about it. What a goofball. And he turns back to look at you just once as you take your leave of the shop. outside the shop. Red turns it to me on like, I can't believe you want to hire him as Navigator, but my knowing look to you confirmed everything,
Starting point is 00:42:30 so fair enough. You know, he did say that there is an emotional tie to this shop. I mean, we've put the offer out there, but perhaps we should ease up on the pressure. Yeah, I don't know why you want to twist his arm, but look, I suppose he will have fun. Look, I'll follow your lead, but if he doesn't work out, it's your head.
Starting point is 00:42:49 Fair enough. He'll come. Right, I suppose we should find Wim and Doran before they burn the entire city down. Oh, shoot, right. And thanks, you know, I know he was being a little bit fun back in there
Starting point is 00:43:03 but I really do appreciate you having my back on this. Getting some answers will be pretty damn good. Of course. And, you know, you can always invite me in on these things, Red, if you're comfortable doing so. Yeah, of course. I can't imagine something that
Starting point is 00:43:19 wouldn't be at least intriguing. if it has to do with you in your past. But your face, when you thought I put ink on that map was worth not keeping you in the loop on it. God, you thought I ruined it. Honestly, my entire attention went on to Marco. I did not trust that he would not snap you in two.
Starting point is 00:43:36 He's huge. Yeah, you like that? I mean, is he, I think he's single. He will be. He's going to have to cut ties if he's coming with us. This is not that, you know, let's go find Doran. I'm a bit of a matchmaker,
Starting point is 00:43:48 matchmaker, make me a match. You want to meet one of the Chubby brothers? Some of the time.
