Starting point is 00:00:00 I don't see a problem here. Oh, it's been a long day. Tbil's head is in her hands. I'd like you to take us to that tree. You can appreciate that that is an odd way to say it, right? What are you all getting from this? Your soul will just go into a new vessel, won't I? We're just gonna use the authorities.
Starting point is 00:00:16 A they, Ilkhe, umbadi say, and then a, ucte there, obdi, be. I feel that we've gotten off on the wrong foot. Welcome back to Dyshame. This is Season 3, Episode 7, Blow Your Mind. MVP this week is Ori, who said,
Starting point is 00:00:47 One day, I'm going to hear my name at the end of Dyshame as a shout-out. Yes, you will. One day, Ori. Sorry, we are just updating those momentarily. But for now, you are this week's MVP. Sorry, Auri. We're on it soon. All right, should we play some D&D?
Starting point is 00:01:04 Yeah, let's do it. Woohoo! Chicken. Chicken. Chicken. Chicken. Blicken. Like chicken.
Starting point is 00:01:21 Fast food. A wicken chicken. There is a canonical fast food now. Chubby chicken and chubby checkers. Yeah. Fried chicken. Chubby checkers. Chubby checkers.
Starting point is 00:01:30 The chicken. There's brothers, I think. Wait, are they across like a road from each other? Yeah, they're right across. Yeah, that's right. I figured out my dice rolling thing, my virtual dice rolling thing too, so. You just had it off? I forgot to turn it on.
Starting point is 00:01:41 I decided I want to just try to make moves towards de-googling my life. And step one was not using Chrome anymore just because that's the easiest thing to do. So you bought a bunch of encyclopedias. Yeah. Yeah. So I started using a new browser. And the browser doesn't support the 3D rolling that D&DBion uses. So I just shut that off.
Starting point is 00:02:06 And now I can see the numbers. Hooray! Hooray! Way to go. What browser are you using? It's called Brave. Wow. So not only is it not Google, but it also compliments you.
Starting point is 00:02:16 And so humble. It does. But the thing is, it's chromium-based. I don't understand, like. It just mines your data in secret. Oh, yeah. I'm so cute. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:02:28 They'll never know. I'll never do it. I'm brave. I'm a little stinker. You're so brave for getting off Google. Took all your data. Loopsie. I'm so proud of you.
Starting point is 00:02:41 I'm sorry Did I do a data breach? Oops That's good I'm just thirsty I'm just really thirsty Yeah Just drink up all the pot to water
Starting point is 00:03:01 Just want to drink up all the water I'm going to go to the great lakes And drink out of all of them AI, but make it Who you? Yeah, make it Pintas. That's what I want my GBS voice
Starting point is 00:03:15 to sound like. Hi, Princess. You're going to have to make a white. You're going to have to turn white, princess. You missed it. We're calculating. Hello, beautiful.
Starting point is 00:03:28 There's a parking spot just up ahead. Do you want me to parallel park for you? It's weirder when it's a deeper voice. I'm going to be honest. That's fair. Yeah. I was going the like, the like, milady version. Yeah, of course.
Starting point is 00:03:43 I was like, like it's more cringy than. Yeah. Sorry. No, this is all staying in. With Tamil having sensed some duplicity in Nix, tensions are high as the four of you stand face to face in the arcane horticulturalists' chambers. I think that you're getting to him.
Starting point is 00:04:07 Although I think that we're losing him on the affability front. I immediately read like snaps. He's like, okay, fair enough. Maybe I started too hot. And he walks back towards the door. Oh, it's been a long day and a tough morning. He like puts his hand on the door, like in like a like high up like in a dramatic way. Oh, I'm sorry, Nix.
Starting point is 00:04:27 I know you're just doing your job. Who are your superiors? We are an independent agency. We work for our clients. We are the superiors. But I feel that we've gotten off on the wrong foot. And then very distinctly you hear them think, that means they won't be missed. One of our clients genuinely believes that she has been cheated, and more specifically her father has been cheated,
Starting point is 00:04:57 either resurrected prematurely by someone other than a policyholder, or being lied to by some of your staff. I would think that this is something that you would care very deeply about getting to the root of. because either someone in your organization is cheating you, or something has gone wrong with your process. Either way, if everything is above board, we should be on the same side. And I will add that, in addition to running an agency that represents these clients, we are also seasoned adventurers. This axe from our arborist is
Starting point is 00:05:40 excellent for keeping trees in line and also for felling other creatures that pose threats so perhaps we should keep everything civil and work together. I've killed so many people, Red says out loud his hands still on the door. Literally, giants. Red used to be an assassin. Isn't that fun? Hundreds and hundreds. Well, I can assure you that.
Starting point is 00:06:06 that the tree poses no danger to anybody, and so this axe will not be necessary. In fact, you should leave it here. No, that's okay. I won't use it. And the surface-level thought, Tamil, is going to... Where's my bag? Like, they're thinking, like... Their go-bag? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:06:30 Over the telepathic bond, it seems like you might be trying to make a break for it. I'm going to push deeper into their thoughts. So it is a wisdom saving throw, DC-16, and I believe that it isn't until the spell ends that he'll know. But I'm going to go ahead and bypass that. I would like them to know that I am probing their thoughts. That's a 22. Okay, well, it didn't work. But they can tell that I'm in their brain.
Starting point is 00:06:58 I will say, too, the minute to Meal sent ovaries that this person might move, read. has just, he's ready to grab his bow the second he needs to. Their eyes snapped your face, Emile. What are you doing? Trying to understand why you are threatened, why you are disquieted by our questions. Have you ever had anyone dig around in your mind? Very, very unprofessional. Duren sort of backs up with his axe against the door, blocking any exit. Are there any other, modes of egress in this room that red can see?
Starting point is 00:07:38 I mean, there are the windows, like, up on the ceiling, like skylights, but unless this person has wings or, you know, some way of levitating, it seems like just this door. I'd love to do a perception roll of the room, just to see if there's any secret doors. I still have detect magic, active. Yeah, roll perception for me. I got a natural 20. Oh! Arland, go, go, go, go, go, got three.
Starting point is 00:08:02 It brings me to a 27. You see-through time. Dude, there's a reason for all those fricking rugs. Oh, shit. You see a slight, just almost imperceptible, like, dip in one of these many layers of rugs. And your beautiful, perceptive cat's eyes know instantly that there is like a trapdoor type secret escape route through. Cool. As Temeel is locking eyes with this person and they're sort of on edge,
Starting point is 00:08:41 Red, if you'll allow this, is just going to, in a flash, draw his bow and fire an arrow extremely hard into that trap door, piercing it shut. Thunk? Yeah, like just right at the person's feet, driving it shut. Kind of like as a warning shot, obviously, but also disabling their mode of egress that he spotted. Absolutely. Yeah, you can do that for sure. Okay. As the arrow sticks into the ground between this person's feet, Tamil will say, It's funny. Professionalism, the idea of it is often used as a sort of dog whistle from those who are seeking to exploit or take advantage of others.
Starting point is 00:09:28 You're right. Probing into your mind wasn't very professional. But it seems that we had reason to be suspicious. Also, I'm not an elaborateist. Finian! Finian! Help! And they try to make their way to the door, Doran, and like shoulder their way past you. Doran? Yeah, Doran stands like a brick wall and puts his hand on Nix's shoulder and basically holds them there.
Starting point is 00:10:00 I'd like you to take us to that tree. And I'd like you to be honest with us about what's actually going on here. All right. Yes. All right. Please, just promise me that no harm will come to this vessel. Huh? Looking confusing.
Starting point is 00:10:16 Vessel? My human body. Huh? Oh, of course. Red looks at Timio. Yes. Doran's playing like he knows, but eyes are certainly darting. In between looks from Nix.
Starting point is 00:10:32 Well, that's an act break. Man, I want to try something, but it is risque. It is a risque thing. That's your name. That is my whole. That's why I want to do it. It's the name of the game. Let's pull some risks.
Starting point is 00:10:45 How ready do folks feel for things to pop off? Just like, go full sideways. I am fine with it. I would prefer not to because we don't know who's involved yet. I don't want to kill Phineas if this person comes back firing. You know what I mean? I'm going to hold off on my crazy fucking plan. Well, what's the plan?
Starting point is 00:11:04 I mean, it could be fun, though. I kind of like the idea just hearing it because we know this person is obviously trying to be deceitful in someone or another. Yes, agreed. My concern is, whatever it is, could affect this person to cause Phineas to come in guns ablazing, and I'm not okay with ICE and Phineas, because I don't know if they're guilty.
Starting point is 00:11:19 Over the telepathic bond, Tamil will say, we can go along with this for now. I've picked up a little trick. I think I might be able to force, this person to help us, even if they don't necessarily want to. I have a new spell. It's called... Oh. Gayus.
Starting point is 00:11:39 Mm-hmm. Huh? Gay ass? You give a verbal... It's G-E-A-S. I've heard it pronounced a bunch of different ways. Yes. You give a verbal command to a creature that you can see within range, ordering it to carry out some service or refrain from an action or course of activity as you decide.
Starting point is 00:11:54 So, wisdom-saving throw. If they act in a manner directly counter to my command, if they're, if they're charmed by this is a charm spell if they act against my command they take 5d 10 psychic damage oh i can issue any command that i choose short of an activity that would result in certain death and because if you order them to kill themselves they uh of course the spell ends yeah what's the duration of the spell the duration is 30 days wow it's a good spell also it says gash like rhyming like Gash.
Starting point is 00:12:30 Fresh. Apparently. I mean, it doesn't matter, I'm sure, but I just, I'm curious. Is it, like, is it Gaelic? Yeah. Okay. Apparently. G-E-A-S?
Starting point is 00:12:38 I was going to say, when two vowels go a walk-in, the first one does the talking. But if it's not English, then that. Another option is geish. Either that or geese. I was going to say geese, geese, geese. Oh, yeah. That's pretty good. I mean.
Starting point is 00:12:50 We can follow, we can, like, do this after. Definitely, I would say then, yeah. If you're cool with keeping it, I would say, wait until they say no and then do it. I'm going to hold on to this for now. But if things start to go a little sideways, this is in reserve. Excellent. All right, start talking, Nix. What do you mean this vessel?
Starting point is 00:13:09 My human body. The vessel for my soul. Well, we're all vessels for our souls. Yes. I just don't usually refer to it that way. You can appreciate that that is an odd way to say it, right? Perhaps if you were in my industry, you would use similar terminologies. Huh?
Starting point is 00:13:26 Guys, guys, guys, listen to what they're saying. saying, just like we were in the vaunted dog controlling it, maybe this one being in the business of reviving people is in one of these young bodies. Huh? Read between the lines. I don't understand. What are you talking about, Doran? Um, he turns to red and sort of between his lips is like, A they, Ilkhe, umbati say, and then a, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, uh, their Obdi Bay. Oh, Red turns to Temeel. Doran's having a stroke.
Starting point is 00:14:06 Tadmiel's head is in her hands. Doreen, I want to award you inspiration for your pig lat. So good. That was really good. I don't understand. You're talking gibberish. What do you mean vessel? And he grabs Nix.
Starting point is 00:14:21 Why do you mean vessel? Might as well just tell him. Please, don't hurt me. Don't hurt me. I, I, yes, of course. I use the services of the thanatamancer. I would be silly not to. I am essentially immortal.
Starting point is 00:14:36 But please, through violence, yes, I could come to some harm. And I don't want that to happen, obviously. I think as you say this, Dorn is like shaking you, holding you by the scruff of your shirt. It's like consistently. And then he stops realizing that you're kind of talking to him. Oh, yeah. Well, just lead us to the tree, and I won't be, have to harm you, or this vessel of yours. And then you'll leave.
Starting point is 00:15:07 Well, probably. If I do as you ask. Hold on, so you also subscribed to the service and then got died? No, it's slightly different. For me, I'm an immortal like the iron root plant. And I don't think you'll understand. Wait a scribble. Like the Vaughn and Dodd-Ret.
Starting point is 00:15:27 the vaughaned. Are you metal? Red punches it in the stomach. Oh my god. That's not metal. It's like the Naja dross. You know, uh, maybe the iron root is actually alive in this person. And that's, just, hold on. Tell us, Nix, explain exactly what the hell's going on here. Yeah, what do you mean? You're immortal. Are you the iron root? I have, been using the iron root since I was an acolyte under the druid Fazelton. I have been immortal. Fazeltung? Wait a minute.
Starting point is 00:16:08 Wait a minute. So whose body is this? This has always been my vessel. Oh. All right. You're going to have to start making sense real hella quick, because it doesn't sound like you fit into the whole scheme of necro-nanothermancer here. Clearly, this acolyte that you follow isn't part of it, and it sounds to me like Phineas out there doesn't know about it neither.
Starting point is 00:16:32 So you better start drawing a line between what's this building's lore and your law. Let me bring you to the tree. That's what we've been saying. Good idea. Please. It will all become clear. Fine. Have we heard, have any of us heard of Fesleton before?
Starting point is 00:16:49 Fizzleton. Fiselton. Fiselton. I mean, respell this. Let's all roll history. I got another natural 20. Wow. That means I got a 19. Wait a minute, I recognize that name, Fizzelton.
Starting point is 00:17:05 Yeah, I heard about it. It's an old, old, old, super old druid. A wizard told me about it once. Why the hell are you mentioned that? What does that got to do with the iron thanatomancer? Fizzelton is, was my master of a time. was because he's now dead or because you no longer serve under him? Because the cutting of the iron root needed a horticulturalist
Starting point is 00:17:34 and I traveled with it to establish the cutting here in Waterdeep. Hmm. Look, take us to the tree. I'm all scribbled up. As we head out into the hallway, Finian is like striding towards us and then stops as soon as he sees us head out into the hall. hallway. Is everything all right? I heard a commotion. Yeah, we're all right. Right? I dropped my tea. Yeah, stupid idiot. It was very hot. There is no need for subterfuge here. We had a bit of a misunderstanding, but now, I believe that we are all in the same page. We are not at cross purposes. And we're just going for a tour. Nix is showing us the tree.
Starting point is 00:18:18 Yes, I'm sorry to alarm you. Uh, please, go about your day. And Finian sort of gives him like a quizzical look and Nick shakes his head. And Finian like shrugs and goes back down the hallway. Nix, was it you that found the orb? Or was that Finian as they're walking? The orb, yes. Ah, we unearthed it together. In a graveyard?
Starting point is 00:18:45 It was in and amongst some remains. Yes. Sorry, I'm just nervous. I've never... never had this kind of confrontation before. I doubt that. Why? The way you spoke to us, Jackass, do you not remember?
Starting point is 00:19:00 What I mean to say is no one's threatened my life before like that. Yeah, I'm sure. I know your type. You treat everyone below you a little bit worse. Even before your life was threatened, you were starting to consider running away. If you have nothing to hide, why would you do that? They just shake their head. Yeah, see, they're different kind of managers. ones that shit on all of them below them and the ones that help the others rise. I know what type you are.
Starting point is 00:19:28 Why don't we continue and go and see this iron route? Is Nick's purposely trying to slow us down? There is an air of reluctance somewhat. While we walk, he talks to the others over over ease. He's just like, what the hell is going on? This thing says don't hurt the vessel. It's following a different leader, this Vizelton, this immortal being. And then how does this link up with the fact that one of our,
Starting point is 00:19:52 clients also lost a father and somehow their body was already awoken? None of this makes sense. Oh, no. While we're walking, I want you to tell me something. What are you or this Fizzlington or whatever their name is and Phineas? What are you all getting from this? You know, like, is it just money or, you know, why bring back the people? Why do this?
Starting point is 00:20:20 I am in service to the iron root. As a druid, it is my primary concern to preserve and nourish. Of course, this building is my home and my employ, I suppose, but ultimately I owe my immortal life to the tree. But you said that this tree here was a cutting. How does that service the tree to take a piece of it and plant its tree? somewhere else. Propagation is a natural way of germinating a life form. Propagations through intervention. Trees can propagate themselves. They don't need help. Humans also propagate themselves
Starting point is 00:21:05 without help. The entire purpose of this foundation is to continue life through propagation. Nick turns around and holds a finger. Take a cutting from a body. grow a new body. Take a cutting from a tree. Grow a new tree. Honestly. And then they turn back around and sort of stomp down the hallway.
Starting point is 00:21:31 And then there are a set of double doors. And they gesture at them. Any more questions or? Probably a lot. Well, you might as well go in. They roll their eyes at you and turn around. See? See? I turned to the other. See, I told you.
Starting point is 00:21:45 This person's just a dick. Nix opens the doors to the conservatory. where you see a grand chamber, very tall, tall ceiling dedicated to the iron root tree. The domed roof houses hundreds of panes of glass, so you can see the sky through it. Daylight streaks down, and it spotlights this gnarled, powerful-looking plant. It's two stories tall, with a thick, sinuously curved trunk. dark green needles growing in clumps all along its outer branches. The bark of the tree looks burnished like a dark bronze color and very rough,
Starting point is 00:22:31 and little fruit or cones hang in bunches along the boughs here and there. Around the base of the tree, a pool of still deep water reaches out toward a circle of steps, around which are stone benches topped with cushions for meditation or appreciation, or appreciation all pointed up toward the tree. Towards the rear of the room, there's a folding screen that separates a smaller cluttered area from the main chamber. From where you stand in the doorway, there appears to be a work table, some tools, other things back there.
Starting point is 00:23:08 Nix stands in the threshold of the door looking up at the tree and says, there it is, the eye. iron root. Hubba, hubba. You weren't lying. Pretty impressive there, Nick's. Thank you. I am, it's shepherd. All right. Now, start talking straight. This woman, her father, came back. Why would he come back early? He only died two weeks ago, but two months ago, a body was grown fully. Who did you put in there, and why? Roll persuasion. Sure. Ooh. You got another one. I'm not 20s in there?
Starting point is 00:23:50 18. Not terrible. Not terrible. Not a that 20 though. Sorry. Pretty freaking close. It's possible that some mistake happened. I'll grant you that.
Starting point is 00:24:05 And you're not curious how or why? You're not interested in trying to prevent it from happening again? I am glad to be of service. whether the right person, soul, gets put into the right container is almost kind of irrelevant when you think about it. Oh, that was what I was worried about. Right. The soul makes its way to a vessel and life perpetuates. But whose soul?
Starting point is 00:24:46 And which vessel? The deserving soul survives. Yeah, but which... All right, you know what? And Red grabs nicks by the scruff of their shirt. So much grabbing by the scruff! And starts walking them towards the tree and pulls his ghost dagger out and holds it up.
Starting point is 00:25:05 No, no, no, no, no, no! Now your fingers cut off, right? It's up in that tree, right? So if I kill you right here, your soul will just go into a new vessel, won't it? Won't it? It works differently for me. Why? You better start talking.
Starting point is 00:25:16 Red like cuts a little bit of the neck. Just like, you know, like in the movies, when you're holding the knife too close and a little bit of blood comes. Yeah, yeah. You cut the neck and it bleeds, but no physical admission of pain crosses their face at all.
Starting point is 00:25:38 It's almost like they don't notice what's happening. Red sort of noticing this moves the dagger out of sight to like the back of their face at all. shoulder and just sort of like stabs them a bit. Yeah. Just a light stabbing. Just a light stabbing. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:25:55 Doesn't really register. Yeah. So if I cut off your head right now, you're going to be fine, right? Listen, there's no need to do any of that. Who so is in that body? Red says and he like plunges the person under the water and then brings them back up. Okay. Okay. I'll tell you whatever you need.
Starting point is 00:26:15 Just please. am I bleeding? Red throws them down to the ground, walks back to the others. She's his dagger. Nix is like bedraggled, like panting on the steps of this conservatory under the shade, the dappled shade of this gorgeous tree. Okay. Did you learn that in them dark tide there, Red?
Starting point is 00:26:38 No, Red's robe is eight. Oh, I tried a new persona. A dark red. Maroon. And I called myself maroon. It was my fur sonar. Crimson. As you look up at this gorgeous tree red, you see that these clusters of, like, fruit that are
Starting point is 00:27:01 hanging from the tree are actually the severed fingers and toes and stuff of different people. Ew. They are, like, attached seemingly naturally. to the tree. There are like tiny little twiglets coming out from the branch that are like grown straight into the bones of the fingers.
Starting point is 00:27:28 It's like the cover of a metal album. Yes. Slayer, Tree of life. Tree toes. Tritos. Classic metal name. Dorn observes these and then it clicks.
Starting point is 00:27:44 And he says, so next. if I'm understanding this correctly, you feed the tree pieces of people, it keeps the tree alive, and also gives you back a soul if you need one. You are the worst arborist I've ever seen the exact opposite. Don't you see? We give the pieces. to the tree and the tree sustains them.
Starting point is 00:28:22 The iron root is full of such vitality. It allows the bodies to be regenerated from just a small piece. Doran turns back to you three and he kind of throws his hands up and he says, I got to be honest, I don't see a problem here. You know, it doesn't seem... The problem is, who are they putting in the bodies? Okay, fair enough. I get it. I cut off my finger. You put it on the tree. I die. Red grows back and my soul goes into the body. Bingo, bango. Fine. Here's the problem. Two months ago, you grew a body and put someone else in that body because they only died two ten days ago. So who the hell is in that body?
Starting point is 00:29:01 You asked me all of my jobs, and I told you exactly what I do. The one person who is responsible for the thing you care about isn't in this room. And who would that be? Finian, ask him. He puts the souls in the body. I keep the fingers alive. I keep the tree alive. I make the new bodies, and then I help the new bodies find their way in the world.
Starting point is 00:29:30 If you are assessing... Hold on. What do you mean find their way in the world? You speak to all the bodies after they're grown? Yes. Someone has to set them out on their way. Okay, so, Marcellus Frost. Two months ago, he grew out of here, presuming it's a pretty big deal when that happens,
Starting point is 00:29:49 since there's no body's growing right now, you must remember? I don't know what you're talking about. I'm talking about your fucking job. When someone is grown, he looks like this, and Red snaps his fingers and minor illusion projects the female that we met, this, but, you know, older and manly.
Starting point is 00:30:10 There is a expression that comes across Nix's face of defeat now with your evidence that there is some part of their job that you have sort of nailed them down that they should know about this case, right? like, Knicks should know about this Marcellus Frost, and by claiming ignorance, and then you being like, hey, this person, you should know this person and what happened with this person. Okay, so there's like a little, like a slight deviation sometimes. It's from protocol, occasionally.
Starting point is 00:31:05 Let's cut to the chase. You are offering a service, You are taking people's money, and you are failing, in some cases, to provide that service. It would be trivial for us to go to the guards of Waterdeep, turn you in, and have you thrown in jail for fraud, and then who would take care of your dear iron root tree? It would wither and die. So I suggest that you become more invested in helping us rectify whatever these problems are,
Starting point is 00:31:33 be there with Finian or some part of your job, whatever it takes, Otherwise, we're just going to use the authorities. Or I'll kill you. Nix stands up from where they were slumped on the steps. And they start to, like, get a little bit bigger. And then their skin splits off. And inside, like, their eyes melt. out and through the eye holes, these like beams of light shoot out. And as the skin folds back
Starting point is 00:32:19 from the top of their head, like these beams of light just start firing all over the fucking place, like a disco ball. And like this shriveled skin sort of like starts sloughing off in clumps and glitters the floor. And you hear, I've had enough of your threats. You're provoking a power that may be more than you can handle. Prove yourselves. A cronters? What the what?
Starting point is 00:32:52 Finally. I knew it was going to turn into something like this. You know, I can't help but feel like reading the name. of the Patreon supporters is becoming longer than the episodes themselves. So, I'm gonna try something a little different here and use some magic. We would like to thank our Patreon supporters. Lita J.
