Starting point is 00:00:00 Their populations from mold in coffee. I'm not making this up. This is a globally known issue. In the U.S., there's no law. And I've got on video somewhere, the former president of the Specialty Coffee Association, the biggest coffee guys, he's saying, oh yeah, I was in Japan
Starting point is 00:00:15 when they rejected a thousand shipping containers of moldy coffee. I'm like, oh, what do they do with it? He goes, we send it to the U.S. where there's no standards. I'm like, I don't make this stuff up. Wherever you guys are watching this show, I would truly appreciate it if you follow or subscribe. It helps a lot with the algorithm.
Starting point is 00:00:32 It helps us get bigger and better guests. And it helps us grow the team. Truly means a lot. Thank you guys for supporting. And here's the episode. Ladies and gentlemen, Dave Asprey here to Godamount in Vegas. What brings you out here, man? Pretty much you.
Starting point is 00:00:46 Oh, wow. I'm honored. You know, I was like, all right, let's have this conversation. In person is always better. Yeah. And so it was easy. I went between, actually, I don't know where I was before this. Somewhere else. And then I'm, after this, going to LA.
Starting point is 00:01:01 Okay. So I just kind of bounce around on those trips. But we managed to fit you in. Nice. And you live in Austin right now? Yeah. What made you move there? I used to live up in Canada for 13 years.
Starting point is 00:01:10 I built a regenerative farm with sheep and pigs and cows and chickens and all that. It turns out they're not very good company. Not profitable? Well, no, they're profitable if you're careful, but they just aren't fun to hang out with. Noisy. It's just kind of lonely on a farm in the middle of nowhere. Plus, I travel 50% and getting off an island on a small Cessna for years, it just it I was spending 200 300 hours a year just in airports inefficient.
Starting point is 00:01:38 Yeah, yeah, that makes sense. I know you just you got danger coffee coming along, right? Yeah, danger coffee is my new coffee company, and it's a different vibe from the old Bulletproof stuff. Yeah, what's the difference with this and Bulletproof? Bulletproof, when I was at the company, I'd been gone for about three years. It was a mold-free, the first mold-free coffee, where I talked about this thing that really does affect our brains and our hormones. And Danger Coffee has a high dose of therapeutic trace minerals in it,
Starting point is 00:02:07 and it's actually mold-free and lab-tested, and it says on the label. Bulletproof's been sold, so I've got nothing to do with them. And this is my new passion because you can put butter and MCT in it, but even if you just drink it black, the minerals and electrolytes, they just make it taste better. It's really good coffee, but then you drink it, and you're like, why do I feel so good? It has to do with hydration and remineralization of your tissues Wow and the tagline that why is it danger? Because who knows what you might do, you know, you might start a company you might ask that girl out
Starting point is 00:02:32 You might you know tell some over reaching government that they should chill out a little bit. Whatever Love it. So wait, you said there's mold and coffee. It's a big deal China all of Europe and most of South America have government laws protecting their populations from mold in coffee. I'm not making this up. This is a globally known issue. In the US, there's no law. And I've got on video somewhere, the former president of the Specialty Coffee Association, the biggest coffee guys, he's saying, oh, yeah, I was in Japan when they rejected 1000 shipping containers of moldy coffee. I'm like, oh, what did they do with it? He goes, we sent it to the US where there's no standards. I'm like, I don't make this stuff up. I was on
Starting point is 00:03:13 Rogan a while ago. And when he had a competing company that was trying to move into the space of bulletproof, he said, oh, Dave lied about mold. No, man, I got 36 studies that I didn't pay for backing up what I say. And hundreds of governments believe what I'm saying, just not the US. That's crazy. So that's why I danger coffee, because it's not going to give you the jitter and cranky stuff. I quit coffee for five years before I figured out mold in coffee. And this just gives you more energy than anything I've ever had. Wow. I need to really reevaluate the coffee I'm drinking then, because that is scary. I did not know that. And it seems like the U S is in general is weird with
Starting point is 00:03:48 their food. They don't take as much. Uh, I don't know the word, but I think they actually hate their population. That's the only conclusion you could make. You go to Europe and you can eat stuff and you feel good. And Europeans come here and like, I got fat and I got all these health issues and I went back home and it went away. Yeah. So something has to change here pretty soon. Yeah. I wonder why it's so bad here because we have the money. That's not the issue. I think it's that there's special interest groups that are organized, not necessarily by an evil overlord saying, we will poison you. Although sometimes I think maybe that's the case. What's probably happening is called an emergent behavior. So when you align incentives, you get millions of micro decisions made, and then it looks like a big conspiracy. And maybe it's not a conspiracy. Maybe it's just
Starting point is 00:04:35 people said, I don't care how you feel. I don't care how much energy you have. And I don't care if you're sick. I just want the lowest cost product. And my work over the last 20 or so years in the field of longevity and creating the biohacking movement has just been saying, guys, I just want the lowest cost product. And my work over the last 20 or so years in the field of longevity and creating the biohacking movement, it's just been saying, guys, here's what to do with your money. Spend a little bit more on food,
Starting point is 00:04:53 avoid these things. And then you have so much more energy. And then that means you have more time, which means you have more money and better relationships. It actually changes the world. So the first place you invest is food quality. And if you need to drive a car
Starting point is 00:05:05 that's not as good, then that's what you do. And I've spent 20% of my monthly income for portions of my life to make sure I had good nutrition. I used to weigh 300 pounds. I'm 6% body fat right now. I exercise 20 minutes a week with AI and I've never been in better shape. It's crazy. Yeah. We're going to dive into that because I actually don't exercise because people say to work out for two hours a day and I just don't want to do it. It's wrong and it's bad for you. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:05:30 By the way, I just made a whole bunch of people really mad when I said that. There's evidence for what I'm saying. So you could overtrain. In fact, the vast majority of people who exercise, they do it every day because, well, it's a habit. It's easy to do something every day. I worked out six days a week, 90 minutes a day for 18 months straight when I weighed 300 pounds. At the end of that time,
Starting point is 00:05:51 how much do you think I weighed? How much? 300 pounds. I did not lose a pound. That's crazy. I was so pissed off. My most recent book was about, here's all the things you can do that give you the benefits of exercise. Your metabolism strong so you have the muscles and you have just the good feelings but you don't have to spend hours at the gym so people come into upgrade labs we're opening 27 locations right now across the country ai will tell you exactly what to do none of our technology makes you sweat most of it only takes five minutes. And if you give me three five-minute cardio workouts per week without sweating, I'll give you six times better results than an hour a day of cardio.
Starting point is 00:06:34 Wow. So that's as much time as you brush your teeth. If you could do cardio in the amount of time you brush your teeth, you probably would do it. Yeah. Well, if you come to Upgrade Labs and you do that, you would get about a two-year extension of your life because of the changes in your VO2 max, which is cardiorespiratory fitness. Five minutes, three times a week, we can all do that. And then we get this thing that makes you actually live longer according to the studies that are out there. That's so exciting. Is there any of these in Vegas? Not yet, but we're working on it with franchisees. Go to ownandupgradelabs.com and you can open one here. I think we might have someone shopping here, but that's super exciting, man. Cause an hour a day is just not in the plans for me. And not only
Starting point is 00:07:15 that, you're going to need to sleep more. You're going to have to change what you eat and you have to do aggressive recovery. So this idea of, you know, just do it and just grind it out. I did that when I was a fat computer hacker and I'm, I'm a little bit scarred by that. You were a hacker back in the day? I was a computer hacker. Nice. My career in Silicon Valley was all around that. Okay. When I started Bulletproof, I was VP of cloud security at Trend Micro, which is one of the big computer security companies. Wow. So I still think like a hacker, the whole biohacking approach, the whole language of upgrading yourself came straight out of my Silicon Valley career. Nice. In hacking, it's a black box. It means it's something you don't know what all's in there, but you need to
Starting point is 00:07:54 change how it behaves so that you're in charge. We don't know what's going on in the body. We know a lot more now than we did last year or the year before, but we're still cracking the code. So it's exactly the same thinking. So what are the variables I can change? In hacking, it's called a threat surface, right? Like if you live in a bunker, there's only a door. Like that's your threat surface. And well, what's the threat surface on the body
Starting point is 00:08:18 for us to change it? It turns out the body is listening to the world around you all the time. So you change your lighting, you change your timing of food, you change your temperature, you change other variables. You might not think matter and it's not very hard to do that. And then all of a sudden, look, I don't have diabetes anymore. Look, I'm lean. My brain works all the time. And so anything you do in the world of biohacking
Starting point is 00:08:37 should make you younger. It should make you stronger. It should make you faster and it should make you smarter or whatever your goal is. And that might not be your goal, but the deal is it's personalized and it's based on evidence, but not evidence that works for everyone who cares. It's based on evidence. I tried it. I saw the results in my own data. So I did more of it or I tried a plant-based diet, which is supposed to work. I did that also. Yeah. And you tried for six months, right? A little bit more than that, actually, when I was a vegan. And man, it made me really sick. And I understand all the mechanisms of it now.
Starting point is 00:09:08 And I kind of take it personally still when people are out there going, you have to be plant-based for your health. I'm like, the only person who ever said that was a cultist from an animal rights terrorist group or a religious fringe who's trying to convince you to do what they want you to do by lying about your health. Or that's a big food company trying to sell you peasant food and charge you like it's steak yeah they know what they're doing in big food so it's either that or there's these environmental people who don't understand that rotting grass makes the same amount of methane as a cow but
Starting point is 00:09:39 the cows build soil which which sucks carbon and then there's the people say i could never kill an animal dude i'm a farmer you know how many chipmunks you have to kill to get a walnut Cows build soil, which sucks carbon. And then there's the people who say, I could never kill an animal. Dude, I'm a farmer. You know how many chipmunks you have to kill to get a walnut? A lot of them. So the net deaths per calorie if you're eating beef is the lowest of any diet you can have. Because you'll kill one animal and eat the whole year. Interesting.
Starting point is 00:09:58 So I'm not a carnivore. I eat some plants. I just don't eat a lot of them. And I think they're more dangerous than people say. But there are some that are necessary. And so this idea, maybe what works for me doesn't work for you, but directionally, it's gonna work for both of us. Yeah, there are some vegans that make it work.
Starting point is 00:10:11 Like I know you had Brian Johnson on your show recently. He's no vegan. Or he's vegetarian, right? Nope. I thought he was. Yeah, I know, he likes to say that, but he eats 20 grams of collagen from beef skin every day. I made collagen into a billion dollar industry category.
Starting point is 00:10:23 I'm like, Brian, you don't have to say you're vegan. And by the way, I haven't announced this yet, but you know, he's got his aging Olympics. Yeah. So I do 200 grams of animal protein a day. And my score is between 69 and 72% on my speed of aging. Wow. He's at 72%. So you can do the same as Brian and eat two pounds of steak a day. Wow. That's what I'm doing. That's impressive. And I like Brian. He's a friend. Yeah. He's a good dude. I think he's a little extreme, but he's speaking at my biohacking conference in Dallas. It's biohackingconference.com. I mean, this is a marketing podcast. He's always just effortlessly drawing URLs. I saw that. No one even saw that. Yeah. But it'll be fun. He's going to be speaking there and Joe Dispenza and
Starting point is 00:11:03 a bunch of other people. That's going to be sick that that's end of may beginning of june three days i'll be there that sounds like my vibe i've got a password if you want it sick yeah he takes over 100 supplements a day so do you 150 150 yep that is insane when i interviewed him it's funny we talked about how many pills we could swallow and i could swallow more pills than him in one swallow and he's like that's a weird flex so if b if Brian Johnson says I have a weird flex around supplements, I'm like, all right, winning. Yeah, that's a good thing. How many can you swallow?
Starting point is 00:11:29 As many as I can fit in a hand, like a full handful. Sometimes people just freak out when I do it. It looks like it's a magic trick. But you just imagine what you did in college with beer, and that's all you have to do. Yeah, and why do you take so many? Because I want to live to at least 180. Okay.
Starting point is 00:11:45 And I'm not of that very weird kind of Puritan mindset. All of your nutrients should come from your food. It's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard. And Sean, here's why. Food today is grown in soil that doesn't have nutrients because it's had food growing in it for a long time and we don't remineralize the soil. I add minerals back into danger coffee
Starting point is 00:12:09 because I know how mineral deficient we get as we eat food. And then if you're going to get all your nutrients from food, you should also get only toxins from mother nature. But we live in a world full of unnatural stuff, both the chemicals that we are aware of, but also the lighting in here isn't natural and creates biological stress. And there's an EMF environment and a bunch of other stuff,
Starting point is 00:12:31 probably whatever your brain's thinking about social media. So our stress levels are higher. Our detox needs are greater. So I'm going to supplement those. And the evidence is that it's working. Difference is I spent $2 million over the last 20 years, not $2 million a year, and I've got the same results of spending $2 million a year. And I've been working on teaching people, don't do what I do.
Starting point is 00:12:52 Learn the principles. If you want this, do this, unless you're this. So AI is really helping, and that's what's behind Upgrade Labs. Nice. I'm actually building out an AI model to tell people, you're not the same as everyone else. Let's not all eat a pseudo-vegan diet that actually contains beef protein. Because you don't have to do that unless it makes you happy. And I fully expect that every person's nutritional recommendations
Starting point is 00:13:20 at the end of the day are going to be within a 20% variance, you might need more carbs than me. You might need less carbs than me. And over time it changes. I eat two or 300 grams of carbs a day. Cause if I don't 5.5 to 6% body fat is like, you know, competitor grade being any more lean than this would be unhealthy. So I'm working to make sure I still have enough fat. And I say that as a 300-pound computer hacker formerly. It doesn't even make sense to me, but I'm never hungry. And you can do this.
Starting point is 00:13:52 Everyone can do this. And you don't need more than about 30 minutes of real exercise a week. I do about 20. And you need to move for 20 minutes a day. It's not that long. No, you go for a walk. Or if you're lazy like I am, you can get a whole body vibration plate. And about five minutes of that is equal to your 20 minutes of walking. Wow.
Starting point is 00:14:08 And you can stand on that while you're on the phone if you want to. You don't have to give up your life to be healthy. I've used those. Yeah, they're at lifetime, right? Yeah. Yeah, those feel good. What does vibration really do to you? Vibration tells your nervous system that you're doing a lot more than you're actually doing. So it causes the body to adapt more rapidly.
Starting point is 00:14:24 I brought these into the world of biohacking about a dozen years ago because NASA uses them to make astronauts recover from space travel. And when you stand on one of those things for a few minutes a day, it undoes the damage of sitting. And you can do some air squats or whatever.
Starting point is 00:14:39 We just don't have to be so aggressive about our exercise. You need to be able to turn on energy production and do hard things, but you only need to do it for a minute and the body will adapt. You don't need to do it. If you want to be like a fitness competitor and get your external whatever muscle here,
Starting point is 00:14:56 you can do all that and I respect it. And if you want to be a pro athlete, you have to put in more time because you're training nervous system patterns. But for most of us who aren't pro athletes, if you have quads and glutes and chest and back muscles, your metabolism will work. And then you can do some other stuff that's fun. And you'll just be in good enough shape. You'll age gracefully. And as the tech keeps coming online, you'll actually reverse your age. It's happening right now. Yeah. I just tested my biological age. I'm 21. Nice. Not bad, right?
Starting point is 00:15:25 How old are you? I'm 27. Okay. Not bad, right? How old are you? I'm 27. Okay, you already got a six-year head start. And get this, there's so much evidence. In fact, that makes me super happy you're doing this in your 20s. When I started working in the longevity field, I was 26, maybe 27. And I was learning all these things that are now called biohacking from people in their eighties. And I couldn't get anyone under 50 to come to this longevity group because
Starting point is 00:15:49 anti-aging was only for old people. And what we know now is that if you lift when you're in your twenties, just to teach your body to put on muscles, even if you don't exercise for 20 years and you lift again, when you're 40 or 50, you'll put on muscle easily. So when you teach yourself intermittent fasting, you teach yourself all these other things in your twenties, those become lifelong skills that are stored in your nervous system and in the cells in your body. So even if you take a break, like when you have kids, if you ever have kids, you'll probably take a break from a lot of exercise because you're just too damn busy. Then what's going to happen is you can bounce back. So the most important time for biohacking in your 20s
Starting point is 00:16:25 is to set your body up for life, and then you do as much as you can depending on what's happening in your life. That's interesting. So it's like riding a bike. You never forget it. Exactly. Wow.
Starting point is 00:16:33 You mentioned light exposure earlier. Now, how damaging actually are these lights? They are way, way more harmful than anyone acknowledges, and there's lots of studies now. In fact, I like to call these bright white LED lights birth control lights. So these lights right now. The ones that you are looking at that I'm not looking at because I'm wearing true dark glasses. These are blue light blockers actually. Yeah, they're only blocking some of the blue and they're not blocking enough
Starting point is 00:17:00 of the blue. Okay. So there's a nanometer width of light called 490 all blue light underneath that is toxic for the cells in your eyes and it screws up the timing system wow it's even bad for your skin it increases your risk of melanoma compared to sunshine so all these people going don't go outside like but you're under led lights that are worse for you than the sun yeah and sunburns are bad for you too like i'm not advocating getting a sunburn are you interested in coming on the digital social hour podcast as a guest? We'll click the application link below in the description of this video. We are always looking for cool stories, cool entrepreneurs to talk to about business and life. Click the application link below.
Starting point is 00:17:37 And here's the episode guys. So it turns out our bodies adapted in an environment where if there's bright light, like the ones we're looking at in the studio, there's also infrared light, which is heat. The old incandescent bulbs or halogen bulbs, they were warm. And so there's infrared and there's also ultraviolet. These are things we can't see, but our body sees them. We just don't see them consciously. So when you strip those out because they're less efficient, what you're doing is you're creating the corn syrup of lighting where you pulled all the good stuff out because infrared changes the way water flows in your cells
Starting point is 00:18:12 and red light is a signal actually to make more energy and it actually can be converted to energy. And I started True Dark, which is the glasses company, because these block the toxic blue, but they allow good blue light through. And the good blue light is what wakes you up so you have these poor people wearing blue blockers all day long and they never wake up and then you put them on at night and say it's gonna help me sleep it doesn't work because there's three other colors of light at night so i have red ones that i wear from true dark and i don't get jet lag anywhere on the planet anymore i fly a lot
Starting point is 00:18:43 wow so i've just completely changed even when I go to sleep based on the color of the lighting in my home and whether I'm wearing glasses or not. Interesting. So jet lag is caused by the lighting. I always thought it was just the time difference. Well, the part of your body that knows what time it is, it's called the SCN.
Starting point is 00:19:00 It's inside your brain. And 5% of the light that enters your eyes, you never get to see the light. It goes straight to the timing center. And it's sitting your brain and five percent of the light that enters your eyes you never get to see the light it goes straight to the timing center and it's sitting in there going all right it's in charge of all the mitochondria in your body and each group of mitochondria like there's a group that runs the liver and there's a group that runs the pancreas and they've got all these things and the scn sends a signal that says here's what time it is so you can all work together in unison and it's very light sensitive and it's constantly
Starting point is 00:19:25 looking where is the sun right now so morning sunlight does one thing evening sunlight does another direct overhead at noon does another so it's angle intensity and color tell your body where you are in the day wow and if you're on an airplane it has weird lighting on there and you're moving a bunch of time zones, and then you don't get that light exposure, it doesn't work. So number one is light exposure. Number two is time of calories. Because 2 billion years ago, when we were a bunch of bacteria floating in the ocean, at least our mitochondria were, they would have the most nutrient availability when the algae had grown. That was between 12 and 2 in the afternoon.
Starting point is 00:20:02 So if you wanted to not get jet lag, wear the true dark glasses for sleep whenever you want your body to think it's dark because it'll trick your brain into seeing darkness even though you can still look around and then when you land in the morning where you land have a big meal with lots of protein and some carbs and body goes oh wait it must be morning time because i got protein i got carbs and i got bright light who thought and then you don't get jet lag. It is truly remarkable. I mean, I can fly to Dubai and wake up and I'm just myself. Interesting. That's a good hack.
Starting point is 00:20:30 So that's why when people are on their phone at 2 a.m. on their bed, they can't sleep. It is, but it's so easy. You can triple click your phone. Like when I triple click it, I can press a button and it turns red. Whoa, I didn't know that. Yeah, you got to turn on some accessibility settings. You can also reduce the white. So now, see how it's super dim and it turns red. Whoa, I didn't know that. Yeah, you got to turn on some accessibility settings. You can also reduce the white. So now, see how it's super dim and red?
Starting point is 00:20:47 Yeah. I can look at that all night long, and it's not going to affect my sleep. And then in the morning, I triple-click it again, and I just tell it to not be red anymore. Interesting. Now, what do you think about these people saying the phone is emitting EMF rays, and it's damaging?
Starting point is 00:20:59 There's more than 1,000 studies supporting the fact that EMFs are bad for the body. We know the mechanism, too. It's one thing to say, supporting the fact that EMFs are bad for the body. We know the mechanism too. It's one thing to say, well, we know EMFs, when they're there, bad things happen. But we can say maybe it was something else. There's something called a voltage-gated calcium channel in your cells. And EMFs will open up. They create voltage that opens up the voltage-gated calcium channel.
Starting point is 00:21:23 Calcium rushes into the cell and causes the cell to swell. And it creates mitochondrial harm. So I've been using my phone for a long time because they're very useful. They improve quality of life and sometimes don't improve it. And I don't care, you know, my balls, because the studies on sperm quality and testosterone levels have been out for 15 years telling you, don't put the phone in your front pocket.
Starting point is 00:21:45 So I put it over my right thigh, like in cargo pants most of the time. Okay. I did a whole body DEXA scan. And the part of my leg bone, the femur near my phone, was 15% weaker on my right leg versus my left, just where the phone is. It affects your biology. So I put it in airplane mode. I don't keep it on my body as much as I can.
Starting point is 00:22:03 And I still use it because they're helpful. Yeah, they are helpful, man. But aren't these rays everywhere? Like outside too? They're everywhere, but they drop down at the cube of the distance. So what that means is being further away is better for you. And when I fly, I actually wear a shirt that blocks EMFs. A shirt? Yeah, it's a t-shirt. It just looks like a normal t-shirt, but it's got silver fibers woven into it. Wow. So if your phone's inside it, the phone won't get a signal. I need to wear that because they make you go through those body scanners. And I heard those are terrible for you. You know, there's something you can do. They are terrible for you. And there's pretty good evidence for that. I like to be super polite. And I just wanted to call out,
Starting point is 00:22:41 don't be a jerk to TSA people. Like they don't like their jobs either. It's a rough job. So being rude to them when they didn't make the rules, you should be rude to politicians who made the rules and probably get them out of office as soon as you can. But don't blame the messengers, I can say. But what you can do is you can explain if you have any sort of injuries that prevent you from holding your arms above your head or something like that,
Starting point is 00:23:04 and you're really polite and you explain it's a medical issue but you're not being a jerk about it you know there is a way to go through the other metal detector especially if you know you have some implants or you had some other explanation that that you could provide good to know they're not allowed to ask you what medical issues you have because that's a HIPAA violation I think so just don't be self-righteous about it. If they want to do the thing where they rub your hands with a little thing to see if you're explosive or something, let them do it.
Starting point is 00:23:32 But yeah, you don't always have to do that. That's interesting. Yeah, you could just tell them you just got stem cells, which you just did, right? I'd love to hear more about that. Yeah, I got actually gene therapy. Gene therapy. Yeah, I wrote about how this was going to be possible in my longevity book
Starting point is 00:23:46 it's a really big book a lot of the the recent longevity books are following the the framework that i identified in that book that book is called superhuman this is how to live to at least 180 and i talked about we would soon be able to edit our genes to make more of the compounds our bodies need and i did a bunch of research and identified an expert who was actually making stuff based on what he read in the book. That's at daveasprey.com slash gene therapy
Starting point is 00:24:13 is where all the info is. It's an expensive treatment, but the average person who gets it is 25 grand. The average person who gets it has a nine-year reduction in their measured age. So if you were to do it and you're already 21, you might measure being 12. They had a 38-year- in their measured age. Whoa. So if you were to do it and you're already 21, you might measure being 12. Holy crap.
Starting point is 00:24:27 They had a 38-year-old show up as being 12. What? And that's just one injection. I'm working with these guys on other types of interventions. The next one coming up will increase your intelligence and reverse your age. Sign me up for that one. Well, I mean, sign me up for all of them, right?
Starting point is 00:24:44 And the idea is right now it's, it's expensive and it's 25 grand, but for nine years of additional age taken off, it's only three grand a year. Yeah. And you lose 1% body fat on average as well. Wow. So I'm, I'm interested in doing that. Yeah. How would it raise your intelligence though? There's different compounds that when they're higher, your IQ goes up. Interesting. And I wrote a large book on cognitive enhancement that was a New York Times science book.
Starting point is 00:25:12 It was between Homo Deus and Sapiens. I was like the meat in the sandwich there. That was kind of a cool thing as an author. Those are real famous books. And it turns out if you can increase the electrical power in your brain, you can increase your IQ. If you can increase your working memory, you can increase the electrical power in your brain, you can increase your IQ. If you can increase your working memory,
Starting point is 00:25:26 you can increase your IQ. And if you can make your brain more efficient, you'll increase your IQ. So this week, that's where I was. I was trying to remember where I was before. I spent a week in Seattle at 40 Years of Zen doing brain training and testing out, including ketamine with it.
Starting point is 00:25:43 So we will soon be at 40 Years of Zen offering neurofeedback with optional ketamine, which puts your brain in some very unusual states. The goal there is to put your brain into a more efficient state, similar to a Zen monk who's meditated every day for 20 or 40 years. And that also can raise your intelligence. So it's efficiency, power, and
Starting point is 00:26:08 memory are all aspects of intelligence. That's super cool. And I love how you incorporate the spiritual aspect into your health stuff because a lot of people give health advice, but they don't even talk about that. It's funny. In the world of biohacking, I built this framework. I call it the four Fs. And I added a fifth recently to have more of the spiritual side. And it's how does your body process the world before you can even see the world? And people say, what do you mean? Well, when you get a signal, say I snap my fingers, you see it right away, right? Like speed of sound gets your ears. But if we're measuring your brain, it's going to take about a third of a second before your brain even gets a signal that
Starting point is 00:26:44 something happened. But I don't see a third of a second lag time because my brain edits that out, just like yours. And you can tune the lag time. Advanced meditators or people who are still in their teens have about a quarter second instead of a third of a second. It's a marker of brain aging. I still have an 18-year-old brain speed, which is because I've done all this brain training, all the biohacking. But during that time, my body is deciding what to do with the information that comes in. So from a spiritual perspective, what does that imply? It means that you need to teach your body how to be better connected to the world and to teach your body to show you what you want to see instead of what it's going to show you. Because what it's going to do is make decisions based on the four F words. The first one
Starting point is 00:27:31 is fear. So if something is scary, run away from, hide, or kill. That's what you do. And this is why everyone listening has ever procrastinated, ever not done something they wanted to do. So much of life is because your body felt fear and then it told you a story about it and okay i can't do that but you could have your just your body was afraid even though you weren't logically so fear and the next one is food so just think if you're you know a bacteria or a jellyfish well don't get eaten and then eat everything so don't starve to death it's just just logical. So now I've explained why you procrastinated and you ate all the Ben and Jerry's. It was just your mitochondria following the basic principles to keep the species alive.
Starting point is 00:28:15 The next F word is something that has to happen for species to stay alive. Can you imagine what that is? No. Multiple generations. Oh, sex? Well, that's not an F word. What would the word for that be? I don't what would it be i don't know fertility oh there we go i was trying to get you to say an f-bomb but i failed so ah there you go fear of food fertility right and the fourth f
Starting point is 00:28:41 word is friend so we're wired to do this before we think about it is be safe, be nourished, have love in our lives. And that love is a source of nourishment as important as food. And this is not well-respected and it's actually a spiritual kind of thing that happens. And then friends, we support our community. We support other people. And if you have enough energy so that you can process fear, process food, process desire, and then this friend thing, you'll actually help the old lady across the street, right? You're gonna do nice things for other people because you're still powerful enough to do that
Starting point is 00:29:18 unless you're eating a bunch of junk food, in which case you're just stuck in fear because you can't make enough electricity to go through. But the final F word is forgiveness and this is an aspect of most major religions and certainly a lot of the more esoteric practices and i've been to remote parts of nepal and tibet and the andes and i've studied meditation with the masters to understand the things that i i've just been blessed to learn and when you learn to forgive, which doesn't mean telling someone you forgive them, it means becoming untriggered. So if there's
Starting point is 00:29:51 something that happened, you know, that person broke up with you and it just, you know, it made you feel awful and you think about it now and you grit your teeth. Or sometimes it's really terrible things. And sometimes it's small things like, God, you know, I was bullied so hard in seventh grade. I had an entrepreneur come through 40 years of Zen, and it was a 1,200-person company. And he's like, I just learned. He's almost 50, I think. He's like, I just learned that all of my entrepreneurial success
Starting point is 00:30:16 was because I was bullied in seventh grade. Wow. And when he did that forgiveness process, I call it the reset process at 40 years of Zen, because it's got specific steps to it and we do it with neurofeedback, you end up becoming unaffected by that. So now you're in a clean place
Starting point is 00:30:32 where you can make a decision without it feeling tense. Emotional. Yeah, and that creates a spiritual state. When people are doing that release work of old stuff, whether it's mom or dad or teacher, whatever, their brain frees up so much energy wow that they become more peaceful and when you have peace internally you have more power and that's why even just having enough minerals having enough salt in your water
Starting point is 00:30:58 enough salt in your food increases electrical flow in the body increases energy and it literally makes you dangerous. I talked about peace and I'm talking about danger because there's two kinds of peace you can make on earth. And one of them, everyone is starving and locked down and will have peace because you're too tired to do anything but put one foot in front of the other. There's another word for that. It's called hell. And I'm not going to let that happen on the planet. And neither are a lot of other people. And the other kind of peace that you have is when everyone knows down to their bones that they have enough energy to handle more than anything that comes their way that day. And that's why it's called danger coffee. It's because who
Starting point is 00:31:38 knows what you might do, but you are absolutely impossible to trigger. And that means that no one can program you. And that means you can do the right thing, even if it's hard. And now is the time, if there ever was one, that entrepreneurs need to do that, that all humans need to do that. And especially people under 30, right? Because now's the time you've got the most power in your bodies and your cells. And there's chemicals that are messing with your testosterone and a bunch of other things that affect your drive in life. Let's get that fixed and get that power all the way back online.
Starting point is 00:32:10 And I don't care which biohacks you have to do to do it, but do the ones where you wake up and you're like, I've got this. And if you feel like you don't have this, is that really true? Maybe you just got tricked by something in the media, or maybe you don't. And then you make the changes to your biology. So you wake up and you're like, I don't know what's gonna happen today but whatever it is i can handle it yeah i will say i had low t and fixing that actually i feel a lot better oh man when did you find out i found out two years ago i was at 502 now i'm at like 900 congratulations
Starting point is 00:32:38 yeah um when i was 26 i got a testosterone test no one did that uh when i was 26, I got a testosterone test. No one did that. When I was 26, I went to an anti-aging doctor. He was like, what? You're not 100. And he called me. He said, Dave, his name was Dr. Miller. He says, Dave, you have lower testosterone than your mom. You've done my mom's test. Is that possible?
Starting point is 00:32:57 Damn. Yeah. Well, I was obese, right? So that means you make more estrogen and that you convert testosterone to estrogen. But today, everyone in their 30s or in their 20s is low testosterone because we put testosterone disrupting chemicals and all sorts of stuff. You know, that Axe body spray you used in ninth grade or something was disrupting your hormones right when they needed to come online. And all the plastic stuff in food. It's a way bigger deal. And then on top of that, they try to convince you to go on a vegan diet, which is shown to suppress testosterone.
Starting point is 00:33:30 It's like they're making weak humans. They're making infertile humans. It's not cool because you can say, well, all right, my testosterone is low, whatever. I didn't kill an animal. Actually, you killed more animals with your dumb soy diet. That's just a fact. The tractors chop up little animals when they go through there, and you just didn't kill an animal. Actually, you killed more animals with your dumb soy diet. That's just a fact. Just the tractors chop up little animals when they go through there.
Starting point is 00:33:48 And you just didn't think about that. But worse than that, testosterone and dopamine ride together. Dopamine is your desire to make a difference in the world. So you're an entrepreneur. You want to bring it to work. And you want to bring it for your customers, at least if you're running a company that's doing good for your customers. If you're not, take a look in the mirror. But you want to take care of your employees
Starting point is 00:34:07 too. You want to do your very best. And that requires a kind of energy and focus that most people don't know. Being a CEO is kind of like being a professional athlete, except you never get a break. It's really intense. In fact, CEOs burn more calories because of the cognitive load. Wow. Than athletes? Not than athletes, but they burn more calories because of the cognitive load. Than athletes? Not than athletes, but they burn more calories than people who aren't in leadership positions. They're holding a big mental picture of the world, and they're actually doing it with their hearts too energetically if they're attuned and they're aligned. And from all that, it just becomes really important.
Starting point is 00:34:46 If you have enough dopamine, you have desire to make a difference in the world. It's not about desire in the bedroom. It helps for that too. It's about desire to make a difference. And it's true for men and women too. Women who are low testosterone, and by the way, women have more testosterone than estrogen too. Really?
Starting point is 00:34:57 Yeah, they do. They still have very small amounts compared to men. But testosterone is important for desire in women too. Yes, bedroom desire and desire to be whatever they choose to be, whether they want to be a CEO or whether they want to be an amazing parent. This is important for men and women to have our testosterone levels so we have our desire.
Starting point is 00:35:17 And when you have desire, you can pay attention to the world around you and you can say, oh, look, there's someone trying to program me again. I think I'll just laugh at them, ignore it, and drink my coffee and go on with life. Versus either get really triggered or tweaked or join a tribe. I'm going to vote for this guy or this guy.
Starting point is 00:35:34 If voting changed anything, they'd have made it illegal a long time ago. It's all predetermined. Yeah. And even if it's not predetermined, who cares? There's two candidates and they both hate you. Yeah, facts. I love that. Speak in a bedroom. So you have sex without ejaculating. I do. Why should I get into that? If you want to really,
Starting point is 00:35:53 really show up 10 times bigger than you do today, this is the most important skill you can learn as a man. And this comes from ancient Taoist and tantric teachings. And I read a book years ago. It was actually kind of translated for me by my former partner. It was a Czech book. It was very, very old. And it was from a tantric master. And in the Taoist practice, for men, ejaculating makes you weak. Taoism is studying longevity. They want to live forever. And they said, look, if you want to live forever for men, limit your ejaculation to once per month and keep your orgasm to less than an hour. Now as a computer science biohacker guy, I'm like, that's the biggest amount of ever heard. So I set out to disprove it. There's also an equation, and this is one that you probably want to write down. So it's age in years
Starting point is 00:36:47 minus seven and then divide by four. So you said you were 27. So subtract seven is 20 divided by four. That's five. So they're saying to maintain your health but not live forever, you can ejaculate once every five days.
Starting point is 00:37:04 And as you age, it'll be every five days okay right and as you age it'll be every six days every seven days now some people get really triggered by this and i want you to hear this so you need to take off your trigger right now because most people hear ejaculation and they they hear orgasm and they think they're the same thing. You can have orgasms without ejaculating. I'm not saying don't have sex. I'm saying have sex for hours at a time because you no longer feel like you're gonna die if you don't ejaculate. It's just like intermittent fasting.
Starting point is 00:37:34 If I skip tacos at lunch, I'm not gonna die. I'm actually calm and I realize there's food coming later. So you learn to own the third F word, which is fertility, it's desire. And the energy that goes into your life people who've who've read the chapter in my book about that i published my data for a year by the way they were right and yes men can have an hour-long orgasm um it's actually painful at a certain point like could it just stop like i'm done and it's like no you're not and the difference in in your life is really
Starting point is 00:38:06 straightforward if you ejaculate your prolactin levels go up and then you get that sleepy feeling and then there is a definite ejaculation hangover in it the next day will you respect me in the morning no because my prolactin levels went up that That's why that happens. If you don't ejaculate, your testosterone levels go up and your oxytocin levels go up. Wow. And what you'll find if you track this, I published my whole year of data on the website. It was kind of embarrassing. Going 30 days without ejaculating is really hard. So I'm like, well, I only made 22 days. Oops. But the course of doing that for a year, I learned to, most of the time, control ejaculation. Wow. So
Starting point is 00:38:46 what happens there is you want to have sex all the time. So the intimacy in your life goes through the roof. And this works really well because Taoists, they just write women walk away undiminished from an orgasm. And what that means is if you look at the research there's lots of research showing more orgasms improve eq and happiness and connectivity and a bunch of other things in women so if you're a guy and you learn to control your ejaculation you'll want to go again and again and again and that increases the intimacy in your relationship a lot. Wow. Right? And now sex no longer becomes about getting off. It's like, how do I get her off? Because that's the goal.
Starting point is 00:39:31 You're like, I'm going to experience pleasure the whole time here. So you end up realizing there's a lot of things that you can do that you probably never knew you could do. That's interesting, man. And if you want to really feel like the biggest biggest testosterone surge ever when you've mastered this you tell your lover i'll come if you can make me and see what happens powerful so how can guys watching this last longer because a lot of guys are one minute pumpers out here it's a it's a problem it starts with breath work so the real trick though if i don't know how juicy i can get here but i talk about this
Starting point is 00:40:05 sometimes at the biohacking conference. So about eight seconds or so before you're going to ejaculate, there's a switch that gets thrown in your brain and you're like, I'm not going to come. I'm not going to come. And then like, it's the best idea ever. I'm just going to come everywhere. We've all felt that. All guys have, I don't know if women experience it exactly the same way. And so, so then, and then you're done. You're done like why did i do that i said i wasn't going to it's your body taking over saying just like i'm going to eat all the ben and jerry's it's like you better do this and it that's wired in to keep the species alive to make sure there's going to be babies right there's a reason for that but you're out you're ultimately in charge so about
Starting point is 00:40:41 eight seconds before you're going to feel it and what you do is you have to relax the muscles around your butthole. And it's a little switch. You just relax those and it goes away. Or if you realize that, you know, you're getting close, you do the physical movements that would come with ejaculation. So like more rapid, but you do it before you're ready. And that sends a body a signal that says oh i guess i must have already done it and then it backs off the biggest thing though deep belly breaths and the final thing if you really really want to learn you have a partner who's supportive just tell your partner i will only come when you tell me to. Because as soon as you take your own ego out of the decision loop,
Starting point is 00:41:29 it's very, very easy to hold off. Like, oh, she didn't say yes. So then you can just do your work. You kind of stop worrying about it. But if you tell yourself you're in charge of it, you're constantly kind of trying to convince yourself that it's a good time. And when you develop a practice with a lover, it'll really intensify your relationship.
Starting point is 00:41:47 And there's all kinds of gadgets you can get now that there's one that will measure the strength of your erections at night. Oh, Brian Johnson uses one. Yeah, I've had one for years. I didn't do a blog post about it. I'm like, I don't need a Fitbit for my whatever I can say. He got up to three hours, I think, recently.
Starting point is 00:42:01 Yeah, I don't, I wake up with nighttime erections. So I kind of like to sleep well, but, you know, I think, recently. Yeah. I don't, I wake up with nighttime erections. So I kind of like to sleep well, but, you know, to each their own. Yeah. Yeah. They get annoying sometimes, you know. It's a problem, but we all have to deal with it. Actually, a lot of people don't. It's a massive problem right now in that even younger guys are having ED.
Starting point is 00:42:21 Wow. And there's a whole bunch of herbs. And I write about this a lot on the blog and there's even technologies um i'm actually launching a company called american shockwave that has a new kind of technology that you do that not only can fix ed it can very meaningfully grow the size of your equipment, yeah, at least an inch and a half. Whoa, that's a huge gain. The shower and grower side.
Starting point is 00:42:49 And I've done this on myself. And it worked. I have talked, I've done, actually there's a podcast. It's the human upgrades, my podcast, where I actually did the video where they're doing the treatment on me before I launched American Shockwave,
Starting point is 00:43:01 where we've got a new device that's coming in. But we're like, don't put the video where you can't unsee that. And it actually does work. Wow. So there's all these things where people worry. And if you think you have something that's too small, number one, there's a lot of women
Starting point is 00:43:17 who aren't matched for a giant, I don't know what I can say. 12-inch Subway sandwich? Yeah, a giant eggplant but it's one of those things where if you're feeling insecure about it you probably need to do some reconnection stuff
Starting point is 00:43:33 do a Tantra class do a conscious kink class and you just realize that intimacy is a spiritual state. It's not about just connecting with your partners, but connecting with the universe.
Starting point is 00:43:49 And 20% of people report meeting God during orgasm. Yeah. But their partners, they just look like they're, you know, twitching and gasping and all that stuff. So you realize intimacy and lovemaking is a spiritual practice. And when you do that and you learn not to ejaculate, your power as an entrepreneur goes through the roof. Wow, I can't wait to try it, man.
Starting point is 00:44:08 I'm pumped. Had dozens of guys reach out and say, I got a $35,000 raise. I started two new companies the first 45 days when I just decided. I'm not saying don't have sex. I'm not saying don't even masturbate. Just stop ejaculating.
Starting point is 00:44:19 Learn to have an orgasm without doing that. It'll change everything in your life. That's so powerful. Yeah, I'll let you know what happens, man. All right. I know you're big on plant medicine. You started taking ayahuasca in your 20s, which was early, right? I feel like that wave kind of happened recently,
Starting point is 00:44:33 but you were taking it back before it was even popular. I think I helped to start that wave, and I kind of regret it. I've done aya twice in my life, and I worry greatly about guys like Aubrey Marcus. He's like, I've done it, you know, 89 times or whatever. And I'm like, dude, when are you going to know it's not working? Unless you're living in the jungle on a shamanic path, you don't need that specific medicine dozens of times, right? There's lots of other medicines that don't have the spiritual risk of ayahuasca. I was lucky. I went down to Peru and I asked around and they looked at me and they said, you're white.
Starting point is 00:45:06 And I was like, really? And they said, no, it's only for locals. No one wants to do this. And I found a true shaman who took me to his little mud house and showed me how it all worked. And it was really cool. And I had a good experience. But it just comes with a lot of risk.
Starting point is 00:45:22 I recommend people today start with ketamine. Ketamine is legal. There aren't people targeting mind control stuff with ketamine the way they are with ayahuasca. There's people who call themselves shamans who don't have any training who are going after high net worth entrepreneurs and saying, oh yeah, come and do it at my house.
Starting point is 00:45:41 And you have no idea unless you're spiritually practiced and you've been working with teachers and gurus and meditating and doing all the stuff. There is unseen stuff that happens with Aya that is not always positive. A proper shaman, and I'm not a shaman. I've done some shamanic training, but shaman, it's a very big commitment to do it.
Starting point is 00:46:02 And I will tell you, someone who's not lived in the jungle and been on a path for 10 years, it takes a minimum of eight years to become a real shaman. Wow. And that's usually living with the Shipibo people. So a real shaman, their job is to be a firewall to keep the negative aspects of Aya out so the feminine part of Aya can do the work.
Starting point is 00:46:19 And when you have someone who thinks that they can do that and they're holding space for Aya, they're allowing the negative and the positive and at the same time without knowing it. And you don't know it either. So I just would put that at the very bottom of your list. If you don't get there, because you can do 5-MeO-DMT, which doesn't have the negative side effects and it's not pissing off the jungle, which is what doing AYA in a strip mall is probably not a good idea. Not the best environment, right? Yeah. The environment you take your psychedelics in is super important. I learned that in college the hard way. Yeah. Right.
Starting point is 00:46:51 I've done shrooms, done acid. I like shrooms. I like shrooms too. I think my favorite is therapeutically injected ketamine for really deep spiritual work just doing a bump of k is actually not really good for your brain and it is if you do it every week it messes with your bladder and it's not a good idea but if you go deep into what you might call a k-hole and you're in a protected space you've got the right music or at 40 years of sin we're doing it with neurofeedback and music what you end up with is this beautiful journey and seeing multiple realities. And I've had great benefits there.
Starting point is 00:47:30 You can do a large dose of mushrooms, also relatively safe, but you want to have the right people around you. Because what often will happen until you've processed your trauma, people will reactivate a trauma that happened when they were born, or maybe have past life or whatever.
Starting point is 00:47:43 And if you have the right people holding space and helping you integrate, your intention is to do that. You can have things that heal deep traumas, but if you're not prepared, you can reactivate the trauma and then you have to deal with it in the rest of your life. So PTSD can get turned on by heroic dose of mushrooms. Latest studies show if you take MDMA or my favorite would be MDA
Starting point is 00:48:06 with a heroic dose, you're much less likely to reactivate a trauma. But so then you're not talking about going to Disneyland, which is the worst place ever to talk about bad energy for doing psychedelics. We're talking about doing it with a trained psychedelic facilitator. Yeah. And it's a very different outcome when you do that. Yeah. Have you had any bad trips or bad moments while you were on plant medicine? I don't believe in bad trips. All you're seeing in a bad trip is your nervous system re-experiencing a trauma that's already in there. So it's always a gift. And if you feel like you're going to lose your mind and you're trapped in whatever, it's a gift. Wow. And I have done six months of my life with electrodes glued to my head,
Starting point is 00:48:48 doing advanced meditation to develop the 40 years of Zen practice. So every time I've ever been on a medicine and felt like, oh, I could see where this would go dark, the level of neurological control that you can develop with any of these spiritual practices, you know, breath work every morning for five years and chanting. Like I've done a lot of spiritual work. So no, I've never had a bad trip and I've sat with many people going through their bad trips and help them reinterpret.
Starting point is 00:49:14 You know what? I remember a friend who had been, he'd been molested and didn't remember it at all. And when he was coming off of a psychedelic trip, it was surrounded by friends thank god but he couldn't tell reality he just kept saying is this real because the person who had abused him had told him it wasn't happening it creates a splitting of your personality yeah so you better be ready with someone who knows what's going on with that if you're going to go really
Starting point is 00:49:40 deep right and once you know the states then maybe you're going to say i'm going to to the forest, hopefully where there's no predators and you're going to do a bigger thing. I just recommend having someone with you. It's also really important to understand. You don't have to do psychedelics. Come do neurofeedback at 40 years of Zen. You'll enter these states without the drugs. Ketamine is safe and legal in all 50 states. It'll get you there and you don't have to break any laws. And you'll have someone who's licensed with you. So I would say start there for people who are interested. And if not, do holotropic breathwork, which will put you in the same state.
Starting point is 00:50:13 It was designed as a replacement for LSD. Yeah, I saw you say that had a profound impact on your emotional state, right? It did. In fact, I've seen more spiritual and psychedelic things on that than I have in anything other than neurofeedback. Wow. Just from breathwork? Yeah. But it's not the Wim Hof stuff.
Starting point is 00:50:32 And I like Wim. He's been on my stage. And I do cold therapy for many, many years and teach people and all that. So this is different. A guy named Stan Grof, he's about almost 100 now. Dan. Groff when he's about almost a hundred now. When he was 94, I did a breathwork workshop where we co-led it and his team led it for a few hundred people I had trained as coaches. And we did it in the Bay Area. And so we have people there just leaving their bodies, just really profound,
Starting point is 00:50:58 deep states. And I interviewed him about it and he said, yeah, I gave 3,000 people LSD in the 50s when it was legal. And it was much better than talking on a couch for a long time. So when they made LSD illegal, I had to find this old yogic breath. So he and his wife invented holotropic breathing. And don't do that by yourself. Don't do that and get into water. You could die. Wow. Because you could pass out.
Starting point is 00:51:28 Even sometimes Wim Hof, if you do that for a long time you get in water by yourself you go under you're not coming back out unless someone fishes you out so just be cautious with breath working water but when you're doing holotropic someone sits with you and you go places i mean the most profound states that you would experience in any of the psychedelics that's and that is also safe and legal, or relatively safe. No psychedelic is perfectly safe. I also want to point out something. A meaningful percentage of people will get serotonin syndrome
Starting point is 00:51:53 if you have the wrong genetics for psychedelics. This is when your blood pressure goes through the roof, your heart rate goes up to 180, and you'll blow a gasket if they don't give you IV benzodiazepines. So if you've never done a psychedelic, you might want to do it when you're not that far away from some medical care. It's unlikely, but it's happened to people very close to me.
Starting point is 00:52:14 And you learn, oh, psychedelics aren't for me. Yeah, I've known a few people actually that probably haven't do, to be honest. That's scary. Wow, that is so fun. Yeah. The spiritual side of biohacking is more than psychedelics. For me, it's all breath work and neurofeedback and occasional plant medicine,
Starting point is 00:52:34 oftentimes in combination with neurofeedback. Yeah. And how much importance are you placing on sleep? As an entrepreneur when I was young, I hated sleep. It was the enemy. Yeah. Because there's so much fun stuff in the world, right? If you're curious, like, was young, I hated sleep. It was the enemy because there's so much fun stuff in the world, right? Like if you're curious, like, well, I could do that. I could learn this. I could do that. And there's just so much cool stuff. And the internet makes it even
Starting point is 00:52:53 worse because there's lots of cool stuff. So I finally got myself to the point where instead of doing four hours a night, which is what I did when I started Bulletproof. So for about 18 months, I only slept four hours. And I ate between 4,500 and 5,000 calories a day and stopped exercising. Because, well, I was a new dad and I had a new company that was growing rapidly. And I was a vice president at a publicly traded company. So I kind of had my plate full.
Starting point is 00:53:23 And during that time, I actually lost weight. I posted a picture of my abs during that time. I remember Joe Rogan's like, those aren't his abs. I'm like, dude, I'm pretty sure they were on my phone. And it was not good for me. It ages you to not sleep enough. But how much is enough? Well, eight hours, right? That's a nonsense number that isn't based on any real science. So you look at the largest studies. There's now three of them of sleep with millions of people over multiple years. The people who live the longest sleep six and a half hours per night. Wow.
Starting point is 00:53:58 Not eight hours. If you sleep eight hours, your odds of dying from all cause mortality is substantially higher than someone who sleeps six and a half hours a night. Dang. Okay. I got to tone it back then. No, you don't. Here's the trick because that's what a rational person would assume. Healthy people need less sleep. People who are not overstressed need less sleep. People who have less toxins need less sleep. So you cut your toxic burden in your food and environment. You exercise. And maybe on the day you do something really heavy, you do get seven and a half, eight hours of sleep, but you don't get it every night because you don't need it. And you wake up fully charged in six and a half hours and you're ready to go. That's how
Starting point is 00:54:37 it's supposed to be. So I turned into one of those people and I've been tracking my sleep religiously for 15 years now. I used to sleep with this headband that wasn't Victoria's secret approved. Uh, now you can do with a ring or a whoop or something. Yeah. And I get six hours and 32 minutes of sleep naturally. It's just how it, how it works. And when you change your diet, a lot of people who go on the Bulletproof diet, like thousands of people have reported this over the last years saying, I just wake up with an hour less sleep. Like what is going on with this? And it's because you had less toxins and more energy. So you need a less recovery time. Interesting. I never knew diet played such a big role in sleep.
Starting point is 00:55:16 One of the biggest things that diet does for sleep is if you eat after the sun goes down, it makes you want to go to sleep later. When the sun goes down, you become insulin resistant. Melatonin makes you insulin resistant, which means you don't process carbs. So the idea is eat the bulk of your calories before the sun goes down. Never eat anything within three hours of bedtime. Wow. And when you do that, and then you darken your house or put in red light bulbs the way I do that I use in the evenings or just dimmer switches. So it's warm, like candlelit vibe, not bright TVs and bright kitchen lights and all that stuff. Your body just gets a signal.
Starting point is 00:55:54 It goes, oh, it's nighttime. And then you go to bed. My average bedtime for the first 45 years of my life was 2.02 a.m. That's late. It started when I was about 10 years old. I would stay to that i'd read and i just always at that time and now i got about 10 30 it's not a problem that is because i learned about light and i learned about food timing right circadian rhythm right wake up when the sun gets up yeah so sleep is critically important your goal is 90 minutes of deep and 90 minutes of REM any good sleep tracker will do
Starting point is 00:56:25 that. There's one I like, probably the most accurate one, is called Sleep Space. It can reinterpret your Apple Watch data to give you a better score that's almost the same as what you'd get at a hospital if you're in a sleep setting. Sleep Space is the name of that company. That's cool. And what about temperature-wise? Do you sleep in the 60s? Lowering the temperature is another signal to your mitochondria that it's nighttime like let's see we're floating in the ocean no sun it gets colder no food because there's no sun right and then the angle of the light changed okay it must be nighttime so studies show that 68 degrees or lower will improve your quality of sleep i chill out my mattress there's
Starting point is 00:57:00 a couple companies that make those probably all of the summaries that i have everything that i know about sleep which is a lot is that the best url of my entire marketing life sleepwithdave.com so if you go there it's no cost it's just a gift i will put you through everything and i've taught 100 000 people how to sleep better for free because i didn't know how to do it yeah yeah that's cool cool. You got so many URLs. I was listening to you on other shows. You'd be name dropping like five an episode. If I was really looking at maximizing profit,
Starting point is 00:57:32 I would just say dangercoffee.com, dangercoffee.com, dangercoffee.com. But this is actually about education and it's our birthright to know how our body works. So when thousands of people keep asking me, how do I get better sleep? What do I do? I'm like, well, here's everything sleepwithdave.com and it's free. Just go there and I'll teach you something every day. And you know, why would I not do that? I could, I guess I could write a book on sleep, but I feel like at this point I've written probably 25 blog
Starting point is 00:57:58 posts and a whole bunch of Instagram things. So I'm just giving it away because maybe you'll buy true dark glasses. Maybe you won't. It's okay. I just want you to get more sleep because you're unlikely to run me off the road when you fall asleep. And the world's a better place when people sleep better, whether or not they ever buy anything I ever made. I don't care. Get better sleep. Be a nicer person. I want my kids to grow up in that world.
Starting point is 00:58:19 Agreed. Yeah, you'd be cranky if you don't get enough hours. That's right. Dave, it's been fun, man. Anything you want to close off with or get off your chest? You know, the most important thing right now in the world is just having enough energy. And that comes from the proper diet and proper environment. And most important thing is getting enough minerals back in your body. If you do everything right and your body doesn't have the zinc and
Starting point is 00:58:42 copper and magnesium and all the things, it cannot make the proteins and the enzymes and the chemicals and the neurotransmitters. So fixing your minerals can fix your testosterone, can fix everything. So the way to do that is you take a formula called Minerals 101, and it's something you'll find out about on the Danger Coffee website. There's trace minerals in coffee. But just focus on your minerals. It's the easiest thing you can do use sea salt instead of regular salt just get your mineral levels up and watch your power come back online when your power comes back online then who knows what you might do and my bet is that in your bones inside the small parts of your cells you're wired to be kind to other people.
Starting point is 00:59:25 And you're wired to be very dangerous and to choose to be peaceful because that's the most rational thing to do. So I want to build that world and don't buy anything that I make. You don't have to do that, although I like it if you do. I just want you to have your power back.
Starting point is 00:59:40 And if you feel like you're not powerful, you got to ask yourself, is it true? And if it's true, then it's what you're eating and it's what you're sleeping. And it's what you're probably not doing. Fix that first, before you try to build an empire, before you try to do anything, when you wake up and you're like, I've got this today. And you're not pissed off. You're not angry. You don't feel helpless. You just feel like, I don't know if it's going to be the best day of my life. I don't know if I'm going to get a new job or if I'm going to start something. But you're just charged up.
Starting point is 01:00:07 And build your life so you're charged up. And then you'll build a great company. But if you try to build a company when you're depleted and weak and your testosterone is 300 and you don't have any minerals, it's going to suck. Yeah. So maybe start with Danger Coffee. Get a mineral supplement. And see what happens. Love it.
Starting point is 01:00:21 Thanks so much for coming on, man. Thanks for watching, guys. As always, see you tomorrow. Love it. Thanks so much for coming on, man. Thanks for watching, guys. As always, see you tomorrow. Boom.
