You work 40 hours for 40 years, right?
And then you retire at 40% of your salary.
And even though like your full salary wasn't enough
for many people to cover their life or their lifestyle.
Yeah.
But now you're going to retire,
try to live off of 40% of your like of like
what you've made full salary.
Oh, that seems hard.
Welcome back to the show guys digital soul flower i'm
your host as always sean kelly got with me an affiliate marketing expert for you guys today
rich jackson how's it going i'm good man what's good how are you doing good man affiliate marketing
is uh a very good skill to have definitely sure it is yeah yeah it was the craziest thing was
it's been around since like the 90s oh yeah yeah since
like late 80s early 90s before the internet yeah but the crazy thing is a lot of people just don't
even know what it is yeah like what wowed me out about it was one day like when i started to learn
about it right i was like wait hold on people make money doing this i was like oh seriously so then
i remember like okay everybody's got to know about
this and then i started to talk to one of my boys and i was like yo he was like yo man i was like
you ever heard of affiliate marketing he was like nah what's that yeah and then i was like get out
and that like it blew my mind especially because i found out about it on social media and then once
i found out about it i was just like researching it researching it and then after that i was like okay yeah i can definitely do this dude it's impressive you
see youtubers you see social media people making six seven figures a year off affiliate marketing
some of them just have amazon links in their videos and they're yeah that was the thing that
wowed me out because like stay at home moms in this space yeah something because it's like okay
yeah i got this for the kids.
I got this for, you know, when we go on road trips.
And like you said, right, like, there's this one person, she's got, like, a million followers, and it's all affiliate links.
That's it.
Like, Amazon links and everything like that.
So then when I looked at it, like, you know, especially, you know, my background is I'm an IT professional.
Yeah.
So, you know, I worked for years in corporate and all of that.
I made a six-figure salary in that.
You're seeing people make your salary in a month.
I was like, okay, I need to definitely make it.
My mind was like, okay, time to make a switch.
That was my big thing.
I was just like yo
i don't want to be sitting behind a desk for the next like you know you ever heard of like the 40
40 40 plan no i haven't heard that okay so 40 40 40 plan right you work 40 hours for 40 years
right and then you retire at 40 of your salary and even though like your full salary wasn't enough
to for many people to cover their lifestyle,
but now you're going to retire and try to live off of 40% of what you made full salary.
Oh, that seems hard.
Yeah.
Think about it, right?
Most people, they start in their 20s.
They retire in their 60s, 40 years.
You work 40 hours.
Depending on your job
my job i used to work like 50 60 hours right and then when you retire depending on like your
retirement plan that's always that's never your full salary right so then that's where oh got it
got it right 40 40 40 and so like when you start to like break that down for people and plus like
you know for example like i'm able i got two small kids i want to be
able to play with them hang out with them yeah plus i want to enjoy like you know my kids it's
funny like my kids when i go up to my office in our house they're like oh daddy's going to work
right they don't know the idea of me leaving the house and like my son that's that's the best part
to me because my two boys they come boom yo daddy yeah uh i'm
working right now uh stop working i need you to play with me it was like all right well you know
what i got time you got that flexibility and that was like the big thing for me yeah that's awesome
oh yeah so how'd you first get into affiliate marketing because i think i found out about it
from those top five top ten lists right and people are oh my god are making a it's like the first thing on google right top 10 for each industry like products right so for me
it the crazy thing was it was literally I'm not a big social media person but I just happened to
catch somebody on tiktok talking about it right so when I found out about them I was like really
I was like all right well you know what let me look a little bit more let me study a little bit more and then when i saw how it really was because i was like
well i want to get an entrepreneurship but i don't have my own product so this could be my thing
right and then when i start to study more like you said right you see people like people who
have podcasts with affiliate marketing people who like you know stay-at-home
moms um people like no background in any type of digital marketing anything and that was like okay
that was the light bulb for me that was the thing that made me go and say yo all right you know what
i can do this yeah especially like i got my mind is wired a certain way like i like learning so it
was something completely new
for me to learn so i just nice got into it that was my thing that's awesome and now you have that
flexibility you're making more money than your previous nine to five it seems like you made the
right move oh yeah no definitely the big thing too like and this is what i started to learn too
because like um you know there's something called like the upward spiral if you ever heard of it
like it's kind of like instead of you've got to become a certain person
to achieve a certain level.
And then once you get to that level, there's another level to go to.
So you've got to keep spiraling up and learning.
So for me, it was like I learned something new.
Then there's all the personal development and everything in there.
So when I started to learn that, it was like, yo.
And then the big thing I started to learn was about
how you can start saving money with taxes because you have your own because you have your own company and everything like that.
So that was like the big thing was like, OK, I'm making this money.
But with making this money, I can now basically write off like I have my kids and my content.
So they work for me.
Right.
Oh, wow.
They work for me.
So that's a tax write off.
Right.
Yeah.
So then even the
trip out here i live in texas but i'm in vegas all of this i get to write it off so this is all the
stuff i just start to learn along the way because it's like there's a flexibility but then all the
benefits and that's the stuff like a lot of times when i promote the people i was like yo there's so
much stuff you can do yeah if you just take the time to learn it.
So that's the big thing.
Absolutely.
Yeah.
When you're working a corporate job, you can't really write off anything.
Right.
Yeah.
That's just it.
Like that was like even, you know, you talk about being in networks and everything.
Like I get mentored.
Ironically enough, I get mentored by another person, big podcaster, and he brings in his network of people.
And one of the guys is like a big tax guy and it was like oh
yeah by the way you can write this off this off this is off and it was like darn i can write off
everything like you know part of my mortgage because i have an office in there um you know
my kids my deck space um my soft like my softbox my lights all of that so i was like yo so that's
more than anything just what i continue to learn
yeah no i love learning that stuff when i found out i pay more in taxes than trump i was like
yeah i'm doing something wrong yeah yeah exactly but then when you start to learn it's like
it's almost like once you see it you can't unsee it so it's hard to like go back to anything else
because it's like yo why would you yeah no there's people that don't write off anything and they're paying the full 40 50 or whatever and it's like dude you
could be saving so much money oh yeah yeah and then even like i even took the time to invest in
like a good tax person to just be like okay yeah this is everything and then let them handle it
yeah it's worth it i don't even h&r block or anything like that yeah a good tax person is
one of the best investments you can make oh yeah definitely so what was that first breakthrough affiliate offer for you like where you're like
wow this could be a full-time thing um first ironically enough so my big thing is is like
i'm big into investing in myself uh like that was when i first started with my journey and
everything it was like okay how can i learn this right so ironically enough like i said
i was scrolling on social media and somebody talked about this is what they were doing and so
i actually learned from a course and then from that course one of the cool things about the
course is you can be an affiliate of the course oh so as i'm learning how to do this i'm an affiliate
and as i'm learning as an affiliate and then you're seeing people actually literally make six, seven figures doing this.
It was like, OK, now I understand.
And then as I'm like actually studying and learning, I'm sitting there going, oh, wait, I could use it to do this.
I can promote this.
I'm a big gym person.
I'm a gym rat.
Like, you know, I'm like the joke I have a of times it's like a lot of times i'm a walking
nike billboard right yeah and so i'm like yo nike has an affiliate program so you can promote all
of that stuff and like you know there's so many things even behind the scenes you can do yeah
that people don't even realize so wait nike has an affiliate program nike has an affiliate program
seriously seriously wow like so here's the wild thing right 86 of companies
have some form of affiliate program wow even companies like you've never heard have affiliate
programs yeah like even like i'm into i started learning about crypto yeah there's a crypto bot
that does the automation and the trading for you. They have an affiliate program.
So I was like, well, and then even how I learned crypto,
they have an affiliate program.
So I was like, there is so many wild ways
you can actually just promote and learn.
So even just like high schoolers, college kids,
even people just in their 20s could just refer people
to apps they're using, websites they're using the side right and make some food money or whatever right and that's even that's what i
tell people a lot of times because like you know a lot of times people be like man that sounds i'm
like nah i was like matter of fact you've probably been doing affiliate marketing for years anyway
without getting paid without getting paid i was like think about this right like my brother for
instance one time he goes he's a movie first thing he comes back and
tells me you're rich you gotta check out the movie right and like i'm like all right where he'll be
like okay go to this theater right here well just now i go to that theater i buy the movie i like
go see the movie i get a ticket i get popcorn all that stuff that if i take my wife with me now if i
take my wife and kids with me easily i could spend like 100 bucks yeah well my brother just made that
movie theater 100100, right?
And so that's what I tell people.
I'm like, you do this all the time.
Like, how many times, like, I'm in Vegas now.
I'm from Texas.
But I go to you, and I'm like, Sean, what's a good place to go eat at?
First thing he's going to tell me is, like, all the spots you hit up.
100%.
100%, right?
And then so now, if, again, I'm a family of four, you just made that restaurant, say, $100, $200.
Yeah, easily.
But you didn't get anything out of that.
Nothing.
And that's what I tell people.
I'm like, yo, you do it anyway.
You do it with Target.
You do it with Nike.
You do it with wherever, like car dealerships, even certain car dealerships.
Like Tesla has an affiliate program.
Wow.
Yeah.
I didn't know that.
I've referred probably a few people to buy Teslas.
Yeah, they have one too. Like I don't know exactly how those work but yeah that's and that's the thing i'm like
yo even like um gym memberships like one time i went to the gym so now my mindset is completely
different like as soon as i walk in somewhere i'm like yo you got an affiliate program
because i mean more than likely i'm going to refer you to somebody right yeah so that's how i
do it, whatever.
I might have to set that up with all my restaurants that I frequent.
Yeah, I mean, but think about it, right?
How many restaurants, how many friends?
Bring like six people sometimes.
Right, yeah, right.
Or like I said, how many people come in, talk to you,
and they're not from here?
So yeah, easily.
One industry that does it well, ironically, is strip clubs strip clubs yeah so they'll work with club promoters so like people are drunk at the club right right and then they'll send them
to the strip club in vegas give them like 20 of what they spent right right right and these strip
clubs are making tens of millions yeah yeah i could see where that would work well yeah in vegas
yeah even hotels have it too as well i do they? Yeah, hotels, Expedia. So even there are so many, you know, you hear like pick a niche, right? And the three biggest ones are wealth, health relationships. But there are so many, like, you know, comics, gaming. I mean, like, I know people that make bank doing just gaming. And it's like, you know, when you see them with the chairs and like, you know, know the headphones and all that stuff how much of that stuff are they selling yeah when their online
people see them that's cool what are some common things you notice from your friends that do
affiliate marketing that are making six seven eight figures like what have you seen a lot of
them do um like i said interesting enough it's i've been trying to figure this one out because
i don't fit into the category,
but the stay-at-home moms, for some reason, they just...
Are they blogging?
They're not blogging.
It's just literally they just get up there and they go and say,
hey, and this is the thing that probably just resonates, right?
They just go and say, hey, I'm helping my husband.
It normally was on my husband to do all of this.
Now I can help out. Now I helping like my husband normally was on my husband to do all of this now i can help
out now i've retired my husband i got more time with my kids and everything and then even the
husbands turn around become their cameraman and like their like tech support people or whatever
and that's the part that's like wild right but um that's the thing i see with them is like you
everything is like the biggest thing I learned was
don't necessarily drive somebody towards pleasure you drive them away from pain it's like when you're
marketing it's like a psychological thing right I learned this from one of my mentors and he was
like yo think about it like this if you had twenty dollars and you're like yo yo twenty dollars right
well like if I'm on the corner and somebody's like $20,
you might look at me and go, what's the deal behind that? You're not trying to give me $20,
right? But if you turn around and you start hitting the pain points, you start speaking
to the psychology of it, right? Like say if you're on a corner, but you hit your head,
your bloody, whatever, and somebody just comes to you and be like, yo, I got a handkerchief for you,
right? You don't care what that handkerchief for you right you don't care what that handkerchief looks like you don't care what that person looks like because at that point
they're helping you with your pain and so like a lot of times with the stay-at-home moms it's kind
of like yo you now have more time for your children you now have the ability to like even
the simplest things like one mom talked about oh my kids needed dental work, and it would have easily cost us $700,
and we're trying to figure out what bill do we not pay
to pay this $700 dental bill.
And those things kind of resonate.
Paying points. Relatability, right?
Relatability, for sure.
Has any of your content gone pretty viral?
Ironically enough, I've had a few um videos one went about eight million another
one about three million eight million yeah well the funny thing is is like it's me jumping up on
a desk right and the funny thing about it is like uh you know i this is one thing i had to learn
with social media like most of the time when i'm around people, well, you probably know it better than I,
like I get along with pretty much anybody I'm around.
Right.
Yeah.
But with social media,
because there's so many people that can comment,
some people be like,
Oh,
you're trash.
Okay.
Where'd that one come from?
Right.
It's like,
Oh,
you jumped on the desk.
Uh,
you,
you probably couldn't play ball anyway.
A lot of hate.
Right.
Yeah.
And so I learned to laugh at that stuff and I'm like,
okay,
yeah.
I was like,
you know,
you're actually helping me when you do this. kind of pushes it along so i'm like keep
going whatever but the funny thing about it was just like do you know target you can earn like
an extra three thousand a month from target right if doing affiliate marketing target has it too
target has it wow my girl's gonna sign up my sign up. My girl loves Target, bro. Dude, I'm going to tell you, right?
Matter of fact, when I would do lives on TikTok, I would tell women, I'd be like, yo, I know you do this already because my wife does this.
Say, for example, Sephora, they have an affiliate program.
I'm like, how many times have you said to, and I'll be on the live, and I'll be like,
yo, how many times have you said to your friend and be like, yo, girl, check this out.
I got this new makeup.
I got this new lipstick or whatever.
Go check it out.
Guys, Sephora.
Sephora has a deal.
I was like, yo, get paid for that.
I've like earned that.
I was like, you know, why stop?
You're marketing for these companies for free for years.
It's like, it'd be kind of cool.
You're making them money.
How much money have you made them?
Might as well, like, you know, it'd be nice.
They can send you a commission every now and then absolutely man so how would do they give you
like your own link and then you just post it yeah they just give you your own link and then one of
the ways you could do it is you know obviously use social media um if you're promoting you could
promote it within tiktok you can put it in your profile you can promote it on instagram put it
in your profile but on the flip side of, the other cool thing is email marketing. And people sleep
on this all the time. It's like you can make so much from email marketing. You start building that
list and then like, you know, that list, like, you know, you could get a dollar a person per list
because basically you get the right list of people and you start marketing and start going,
hey, I got this particular product. Maybe you're into this. Like say if get the right list of people and you start marketing and start going hey i got this particular product maybe you're into this like say if you have a list of people
that are all into fitness yeah well more than likely they might buy some nike stuff yeah so
you put your affiliate link send an email off like hey now he's got a new this new sneaker out
check this out they got a new top out check this And that's in, you send that to an email of 30,000 people.
Yeah.
Now,
heck,
if only 10% of them buy,
right.
If only like 3000 pie,
but you get like,
say even just a $20 commission off of that.
That's up,
man.
It adds.
Yeah.
I'm glad you mentioned email marketing.
I just finished Alex Ramosi's new book.
Oh,
nice.
And he was talking about a heavy.
Yeah.
And it made me step up my game there.
And also i've
been studying newsletters oh yeah yeah i mean i just subscribed to like the top 10 business
newsletters and these guys are just printing money man oh yeah like um it's funny you mentioned
alice ramosi because even one of my mentors was an affiliate for that oh yeah yeah and so i was
just like now i spend most of my time because i'm a big like i
said like i'm a big reader big i study people yeah right like so i go and i'm like okay what are you
doing how are you doing it and so like you know alex ramos yeah that's huge but it was funny
because i even looked at like um how my mentor promoted his stuff and i was like okay pay
attention to what he's doing looking at the copies, see how he goes about it.
And I was like, and learned a lot from that.
500,000 people on that live, man.
Yeah.
Crazy.
He's on another level.
He is, he is for sure.
Like I've listened to him, like I remember one time I was like,
man, that just makes a lot of sense.
So you mentioned you're a big learner, big reader.
What books stand out to you and have changed your life um let's see so the big ones now is i just finished the alchemist i love that book nice right
that was i read a lot of mindset stuff because what i learned like with marketing marketing more
than anything is mindset like psychology understanding people even understanding yourself right um because even so the alchemist
was a big one um right now i'm studying um i'm reading breaking the habit of being yourself
um by joe dispensa i love joe dispensa man i'm a big fan of his so i've read supernatural i've
listened to his gaia series and then so i read um I'm reading breaking the habit of being yourself and then
the third one that's big for me is the secrets of the millionaire mind by T. Harv Eker so like I'm
very big into a lot of mindset stuff because again marketing is just psychology yeah you know
I mean it's like understanding like like you said like pain points pleasure points you know something that might not work for me but understand
not necessarily about me it's about you how does it affect you and how do i reach you
and how do i understand like you know like you say relatability like you know like say for example
we might relate in another way like you know you might not be a father but you might relate to me
like us just being dudes absolutely dudes into sports so you know something you might not be a father, but you might relate to me like us just being dudes. Absolutely.
Just being dudes into sports.
So, you know, something like that.
Yeah.
Although my Giants got ****.
Oh, my gosh.
40-something.
Oh, and trust me, as a man who lives in Texas, and I had to watch that.
Oh, man.
I've never heard of a Giants fan in Texas.
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I might be the only one.
I'm a native New Yorker, so i gotta roll with it i grew
up in jersey and uh yeah i was a giants fan too and there was there was a lot of cowboy fans in
jersey for some reason they're everywhere just i don't know why they're just they're everywhere
yeah like no matter where you go i didn't understand it yeah yeah well america's team
right so i guess but yeah giants used to be good in jersey yeah yeah i was growing up well i mean
they always been that's why the joke used to be like they technically you know they're new york
giants but they play in new jersey yeah yeah whatever did you play football growing up no
actually i was the so the funny thing is i was a small skinny kid i was always the smallest shortest
kid of my friends and then
i ran track okay and then when i graduated high school like i weighed like 130 pounds
jeez and then from there i was just like yo man i am too small for this right so i was just like
yo man i'm like i'll be real i was like look girls will probably like me more if i got muscles so i
went from like 130 to like 200 pounds are you serious dude that's
crazy all muscle how tall are you i am six feet tall wow that's a big jump 70 pounds yeah hey
one of my boys was like he was a trainer and he was like yo he's like just work with me for a
little bit do what i ask i was like all right cool how long did it take i did it like in a year
actually believe you were getting like eight pounds a month right yeah because well part of How long did it take? I did it in a year, actually.
You were gaining eight pounds a month.
Because part of it was just like I was always strong.
My trick was holding weight.
So it was like eating enough to hold the weight
and then learning how to work out.
That did it for me.
I just weighed myself yesterday.
I'm the lowest I've been since high school, man.
Oh, yeah? What are you?
170.
170. And I'm 6'5". 6'5". I've been since high school, man. Oh, yeah? What are you? 170. 170.
And I'm 6'5".
6'5".
But I got food poisoning in Bolivia.
Oh.
So I lost 10 pounds.
And that is, I've had stomach viruses.
Those are no joke.
Yeah, man.
Yeah.
Whenever you travel to a new country.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Yeah, no.
Yeah, I feel for you.
I feel for you.
Because I've had stomach viruses.
And normally, i'm much
bigger taller than my wife and my wife is like carrying me around like i'm a little kid after
this because it's like oh man it's rough does your wife do this too affiliate marketing no it's only
a matter of time oh yeah you're converting her oh no no no i don't have to convert her like no my
wife is like so the cool thing is like um having
a good woman in your life man is just like she's the catalyst for a lot of things right so sometimes
she'll see it and she'd be like yo you should get into this or even like once you're into it like
she'll be the one be like yo study this person i found this person because we're both we were both it
professionals so we already have very analytical type minds right so it's almost like being with
the female version of yourself sometimes and it drives you nuts because sometimes you'll say
something to me and i'm like i don't want to hear you right now but at the same time i'm like
i know you're right that's really why i don't want to hear you yeah but relatable for sure
oh yeah but no no she's definitely it's just a matter of time like um you know once we got some
things settled then yeah 20 years two kids what's the secret not a lot of people lost that long
you know what real real talk i grew up like my grandparents literally deaf to the heart and i'm talking about
when my grandfather passed away they had been together like 60 years damn it was like something
like 60 years i want to say right and her grandparents was like something like 60 years
and we grew up very close to our grandparents so then when we came along like i
was like like for me my mentality was like whoever i meet whoever i decide to date like i didn't just
date anybody i was like whoever i decided to date because they got the potential to be my wife that
made me look at everybody different right so when we got together it was just kind of like okay um you know
she's very much the same way and then it was just like the other thing we learned to do tune out the
noise of everyone else because you know everyone wants to give you advice yeah everyone wants to
tell you how to do something a lot of times i'll tell you like my advice would be don't listen to
anybody because you're you i'm me what might work for me might not work for you because your wife
is not like my wife or your future wife is not like my wife yeah right so you know like say for
example we never yell at each other and even one of the things i learned and i told her this very
early on she was mad at me because we uh we got into a fight one of our first fights and i was
just like all right i had enough and i walked out the room right and she was living and i said to her i said yo so i came back and i just said to her i said look
the only reason i walked away i can apologize for that i said but if i say something even though i
apologize for it i was like you'll always remember it you won't forget it i was like you'll forgive
me for it but you'll remember the time i said something about it so i was like i'd rather walk away
apologize for that you'll forgive that you'll forget that but something i say it'll last longer
so that was one of the biggest things i learned because i've seen people where it's like you know
you and i get into a fight man f you f you, F your family, everything about you, F your mom, F your dad.
And then we might be cool later, but you're going to be looking at me like,
why'd you go there?
You'll never forget it, right?
You'll never forget it.
Certain comments.
So that was the type of thing, like, that.
And so, you know, we never raised our voice.
Like, my kids have never seen us yell at each other.
Wow.
Right?
They've never seen us, like, you know, they've seen us be a little tense,
but they've never seen, like, I they've seen us be a little tense but they've never seen like i barely raised my voice to them yeah because i'm like i wouldn't want anybody talking to me like that i would i darn sure wouldn't let anybody talk to you like
that so if i wouldn't let anybody talk to my wife that way if i wouldn't let anybody talk to my kids
that way why would i do it so that's i love that those are the things that kind of have kept us
that's cool man yeah i grew up in an have kept us. That's cool, man.
Yeah, I grew up in an environment where yelling was a daily occurrence.
Oh, yeah, yeah.
So I made sure I would never do that.
Right, oh, yeah.
That's because I saw what it did to me, man.
Oh, yeah, no.
It's funny, like my family's from the South, so yelling is normal.
It's normal, but it shouldn't be.
That goes back into learning psychology, marketing, all of that.
Ironically, like I said, to learn marketing is to learn psychology.
Ironically, one of the best ways to market to people is, you wouldn't think it works,
but to actually talk down to them, like they're children.
There's a group of people that is like, you know what?
Sean, shut up, sit sit down buy this thing it's like all right well he said it and he said it with a lot of bass in his voice so i'm gonna do it it's like because it's almost like that's how
we're taught in the school system right you just sit pay attention as opposed to free thinking free
thought whatever yeah but believe it or not again it all goes back it's a psychology thing yeah because
you're so used to just listening becoming a sheep and just right yeah like i remember my mother
asked me a question one time and i was just like i'm native new yorker we had moved to la we were
moving to la and she was like but why would you move out there it's so expensive yeah and i looked
at her i was like ma i was like we live in new york
it's not cheap here i was like i was like so me moving to la doesn't make that and she
and she gave me all these bullet points of why i shouldn't go and i was like i said okay and then
we went one by one and afterwards she was like oh you have a point but because she had heard so
many times la is this and at the time so it was like her bias the bias and so many times, LA is this, LA is that, and at the time.
Her bias.
Her bias.
And so many of us carry that.
And so, like you said, yelling at someone, all of that.
When you start to understand that and unpeel all of that,
that is when you can get to that person.
And really it's like, okay, look, this might be the right offer for you.
This might be the thing that's going to help you to make money.
And this might be the reason you've been held back.
This is the thing that kept you from being that six-figure earner
or being that seven-figure earner.
It's wild how all of it just kind of ties into each other.
Absolutely.
Rich, it's been fun, man.
