Episode Date: April 27, 2023

Jake is back in the studio after getting some R&R down in Florida last week and is making his way through your texts, emails, DMs and voicemails. But first, he's talking about what kind of artist ...makes a great Disgraceland episode, William Hurt in Body Heat, and why channel surfing is better than streaming. A new season of Badlands launches next week on May 3rd with a Richard Pryor episode and a new bonus episode called Wrap Party. Leave your own message for Jake to reply to at 617-907-6638 or on socials @disgracelandpod and come join the After Party! Starting point is 00:00:01 This is exactly right. Double Elvis. Hey, discos, need a little more disgrace land in your life? Just a touch to get you through? Yeah, me too. This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome to Disgraceland, the After Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode.
Starting point is 00:00:44 A little thing we like to call the after party. This is the show after the show, the party after the party, the bridge to get you from one full episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig into the dirt. On this episode, we are talking about Willie Nelson. More on the new Badlands season. Nick Caves, Bunny Monroe, William Hertz, body heat, and of course your voicemails, text, DMs, and more.
Starting point is 00:01:07 And as always, a whole lot of rosy. All right, discos, let's get into it. Greetings and salutations, disgrace land listeners, Willie Nelson, he once said that the early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese. I have no idea what that means. but if you listen to our latest episodes on Willie Nelson, you'll hear me make mention in our intro of, quote,
Starting point is 00:01:44 sat on the inside cheese, unquote, in reference to Smokey Robinson in the Miracles number one song, Tears of a Clown from December 23, 1970. Smokey Robinson is an interesting artist to compare to Willie Nelson. They're both assassin-level songwriters who became performers. They're both of the same generation. Willie's a little bit older. He was born in 1933 and Smokey was born in 1940.
Starting point is 00:02:10 Willie turns 90 this week, by the way. Happy birthday, Willie Nelson. They're both still kicking it and they both still look great. In doing about four seconds of research prior to jumping on the mic here, I learned that Smokey Robinson has written more than 4,000 songs, dozens of which landed in the top 40. Willie, on the other hand, has written more than 2,500 songs himself, 2,500, not quite 4,000, but 2,500.
Starting point is 00:02:34 That's a good clip. 112 of those hit Billboard's top country chart, which is not the same as the top 40 chart. Willie, though, is iconic. And, you know what I mean? Smokey really isn't. Willie Nelson, do you show us a picture to most anyone, and they're going to know.
Starting point is 00:02:52 I mean, even if they don't know anything about music, they're going to know who Willie Nelson is. It's not really the same with Smokey Robinson. But, of course, the most important difference between Smokey Robinson and Willie Nelson, Willie, as I said earlier, has recently been featured in two episodes of Disgraceland, and Smokey Robinson, as of this date, has not been featured in Disgraceland, though he does make appearances in the Marvin Gay and in the Motown episodes.
Starting point is 00:03:16 And I think he may most likely, I can't remember, but he probably shows up in the Temptations episode as well. I'm guessing, I can't remember. But there's a reason for this. It's most likely because when we have a podcast about music and true crime, outlaws get preference. And Willie Nelson was famously that, an outlawful. in image and in action, the shootouts and the fires, and nearly becoming a member of the 27 club, all this outlaw behavior.
Starting point is 00:03:42 It's depicted in our recent episodes on Willie. It's fun to recount. It's a blast to write about and to talk about and to create music around. But it should also be said that when it comes to songwriting, Willie Nelson was also an outlaw. He was bad ass. These songs, you know, I can't tell.
Starting point is 00:04:05 I can't tell if they're as weird as I think they are or if we've just accepted the weirdness because he's Willie Nelson and we've heard these songs all our lives, those of us who are fans of music. But Willie didn't, as most of you know or don't, I don't know what your history level is on Willie Nelson, but Willie, Willie didn't truck with convention,
Starting point is 00:04:26 not when it came to his songs, not in sound, not in structure. Willie's songs, they're canon now, like I said, But back when he hit the scene, his phrasing, his production, his presentation, all of it was totally unique. And that type of originality, it doesn't always break through. But thank God for Willie Nelson that it did. We get into this and these two episodes on Willie, which I highly encourage you to check out if you haven't already. And later in this bonus episode, I'm going to get a bit more into Willie's music, specifically into one group of songs in particular when I do the recommendations.
Starting point is 00:04:59 In the meantime, though, shotgun Willie awaits you in your disgrace land feed. Go check that out. As of yet, no Smokey Robinson episode, but who knows, maybe sometime soon. But like I said, we got Marvin Gay, we got Motown, we got the Temptations, you can check that out. Also, we have previously released episodes on Jazz Great Chet Baker, one of my favorite bands of all time, The Misfits, and The Grateful Dead's, Ron, Pigpen, McCurnin. Those are in your feed now. Pigpen, like Willie Nelson, also a bit of an outlaw, grateful dead fans and non-dead fans. If you're looking for a tribute to the rough and the rowdy ways of Americana music of a peek into those Alan Lomax and Harry Smith,
Starting point is 00:05:41 Bad Bad Man Days, the brawlers who wrote and sang both the ballads and the breakdowns that led to the best blues and the best country music of the 20th century, then check out my ballot to Pigpen in Disgraceland. You will not be disappointed. So our onslaught of content continues for the next week with episodes on Selena and we'll get an episode on Chuck Berry and then no new disgrace land episode next week. And that's because we're releasing our new season of Badlands on May 3rd. And I want to give that series a week to kind of be its own thing, to breathe, to get you guys into the Badlands feed, get you listening to the premieres, the series. season premiere episode on Richard Pryor, which we're all very excited about over here at Double Lovus. So please, if you have not already, please go to the Badlands Feed and subscribe. Get ready for that new episode on Richard Pryor.
Starting point is 00:06:34 We also got episodes on James Dean, Carrie Fisher, Will Smith, many more coming in this season. It's going to be awesome. We've also got a new Badlands bonus episode called The Rap Party. Not the After Party, the Rap Party. See what I did there? Yeah, I'm not that smart. I pretend to be, but I'm really not. The rap party, it will be different than this after party.
Starting point is 00:06:54 It'll be, I don't know, it'll, I haven't quite got it figured out yet, but I promise you, within the next two weeks, I will. And we're going to have the movie content that we're doing here in the recommendation side of the after party. We're going to have that over on rap party exclusively, but we're also going to have some other stuff over there. It's going to be a totally different show than this. Point is, go subscribe to Badlands if you have not already.
Starting point is 00:07:14 That's where you're going to get all that Badlands content. More on all this later. but first, a quick break. All right, Willie Nelson did not call 617-9066-6638 this week and leave me a voicemail, but this very polite listener from the 727 did, and this is what he had to say. Hey, I just wanted to say thanks for uploading the old episodes.
Starting point is 00:08:02 I really loved them when they came out, and I was gone when I was able to find them again. So I've been enjoying really going back through those. Yeah, I have to make a lot of long drives for work, and this show it keeps me entertained, and I learned stuff about some artists that I love. So, yeah, thank you. You're doing good work. Bye.
Starting point is 00:08:25 Why, thank you, 727. For those of you who don't know, like my mom, I saw my mom at my niece's birthday party yesterday, and over the weekend, I should say, and guys, my mom, she's a little worried about me. She mentioned so. She mentioned that she can't believe how much content I'm pumping out. And though I've explained this numerous times before, I didn't have the heart to do it again.
Starting point is 00:08:47 So I just nodded along. But you guys know, like the 727 here, that we are not releasing five new disgrace land episodes a week. We are re-releasing previously exclusive episodes along with one full episode per week, plus this bonus episode. You hear me. You guys know.
Starting point is 00:09:04 I say this every week. And like I said, you hear me. Wamsgam said, we hear for you. but I say you hear me. Disgraceland is one full episode on Tuesday, one bonus episode on Thursday. Previously, exclusive episodes released on off days until we get the entire 100-plus archive out into your feeds. All right? Thank you to the 727 and to my mom for prompting this clarification. Let's check in with Fadra from the 778. Hey, Jake, it's a girl, Fadra from Vancouver, Canada.
Starting point is 00:09:32 I just wanted the call saying I love hearing all the old episodes and the new. also wanted to say I did vote for you to get a Webby Award because I do truly believe you deserve one. I love all the shows you do, including Badlands as well. I guess the only thing I have could be like
Starting point is 00:09:50 talking about new TV shows and stuff is that show B that's on Netflix with Ali Wong and that dude Glenn from The Walking Dead. I accidentally started watching it because I thought it was like a like a docuseries or like a
Starting point is 00:10:06 series kind of thing. And I got really into it. And by the time I got to the end, I got like super disappointed. So I'm just giving you a heads up. If you do watch it, do not have expectations. It's totally not worth it. But either way, keep it up. Rock or Rolla? Can't wait to hear some more. Peace out. Yeah, there you go. Fadra, just like the 727, she gets it. Thanks for voting for us to Fedra, and thanks to everyone else who voted for us for a Webby. We're nominated for Best Music Podcast. I have no idea as of the taping of this whether or not we won that Webby would be our second win for Webby Award, which is kind of a big deal. We were right there at the end, neck and neck with Mr. John Legend, so we shall see. Hopefully I'll know soon. To your point about
Starting point is 00:10:55 beef, I'm not going to watch Beef. I've received a bunch of recommendations to do so, and Netflix is like, you know, reminding me every five seconds that I need to watch it. But based on you saying the end was disappointing, I'm just not going to do it. I'm also because I'm kind of pissed at Ali Wong. And that's all I have to say. All right, one more voicemail. Let's go with Andrew from the 314. Hey, Jake, Andrew Leposha from St. Louis here.
Starting point is 00:11:22 I was listening to the disgrace name Spotify playlist, which is great. He has a lot of great stuff on it. But I do have a little bit of you about it. How come of all the songs to represent Chuck Berry, you pick my dingling. I mean, you could have done Johnny Be Good or no particular place to go or even Run Run Rudolph. But why the novelty song about his dick? Anyway, love what you do. Keep up the great work.
Starting point is 00:11:48 Bye. Great question, Andrew. For those of you who don't know what Andrew is talking about, Spotify asked me to put together an official disgrace slam playlist for them. So we did that, or I should say I did that, and I included, as Andrew says, Chuck Berry's version of my dingling. And the reason, I guess, is that I've heard, dude, the Chuck Barry hits so many freaking times. I'm just, to be honest, I know he's a god. I'm just bored with them. Also, I couldn't find an easy way to get that 50s vibe into the sequencing of the playlist,
Starting point is 00:12:22 like I could, the later live 70s version that I have of my dingling. Also because, you know, I'm an immature prick sometimes, and that song just cracks me up. But Andrew, you'll be happy to know, dude, I get into the greatness of Chuck Berry's music, specifically his lyrics in both the disgrace land episode on Chuck Berry and more fully in the chapter on Chuck Berry in my book.
Starting point is 00:12:44 You can check that out whenever you want. All right, guys, 617-906-6638. If you want to leave me a voicemail or you want to send me a text, let's respond to some texts, shall we? All right, this is a long one from the 401. I'm going to read it wicked fast. Jake, I keep meaning to tell you my own Quentin Tarantino on a plane story,
Starting point is 00:13:04 so excuse me while I word vomit all over your text messages. I'm from L.A., but I've lived in Pittsburgh for several years now. I visit my family in L.A. a few times a year in 2005. I was on a red eye from L.A. to P.G.H. and C. Quentin on my plane. But I kept thinking, that's not him. Why would he be going to Pittsburgh? I get to my seat, and dude next to me says,
Starting point is 00:13:21 did you see Quentin Tarantino in first class? Okay, so it was Quentin Tarantino. I get to Pittsburgh and go to get my luggage and I see him standing outside waiting for transportation. I run out there and I say, I never do this because I'm from L.A. and really just try to leave people alone. But can I get your autograph?
Starting point is 00:13:34 He was cool and he signed one for me. About five years later, and I'm at my parents' house in L.A. and a movie maker we know is staying with them. He starts telling me about the time he went to Pittsburgh for the George Romero and a living dead anniversary thing and he ran into Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez there, and they weren't letting them in because they weren't on the list.
Starting point is 00:13:49 He tells the door person, do you know who these guys are? And the door person says, no, and they're not on the list. Our movie maker friend was on the list. Our movie maker friend was on the list, so he runs in and gets someone to get Quentin Quentin Rodriguez inside. It didn't hit me until later that that was why Quentin Tarantino was on the same plane as me,
Starting point is 00:14:04 not me as the 412. Cool story, 412. I appreciate it. I've never seen Quentin Tarantino on a plane, but I don't know if I'd, I don't know if I'd approached Quentin Tarantino on a plane. Planes are weird. You see a famous person on a plane and it's like, nah, it's just awkward. You know, you go to him, you bother him.
Starting point is 00:14:23 then you got to fucking walk by him to the bathroom. It's just weird. I don't know that I'd do it. Maybe I'd wait until I was off. But then they're going somewhere. Then they're moving. Then they're moving. That's always hard too.
Starting point is 00:14:31 What are you going to do? Chase someone down. I don't know. But I applaud you for going up and getting an autograph. And I like to hear that he was cool. He seems like a cool guy. Have you checked out the podcast? My recommendations?
Starting point is 00:14:43 I haven't shouted this out yet. But Quentin Tarantino has a podcast with Homeboy who did Rules of Art, rules of attraction. Why am I blanking? Why am I blanking? Roger Avery. That's it. Yes, Roger Avery.
Starting point is 00:14:58 He reposted a story I did about rules of attraction about a week ago and I sent him a message. And he left me on red and never got back to me. That pissed me off, Roger Avery. Just kidding. I didn't actually get upset about that. But yeah, Roger Avery and Quentin Tarantirin, they have a podcast. Check that out. All right, going to the 801.
Starting point is 00:15:14 Jake, thank you for putting your podcast back on all platforms. It was a pain to try to catch your content when it was exclusive. I have some catching up to do me. man, and I'm looking forward to it. Best regards, Curtis. Curtis, we're doing our best, man. Get in here. Check it out. Lots of, lots of content.
Starting point is 00:15:30 All right, from the 205. Hey, Jake, this is Lux. Musician from Birmingham, Alabama, living in Atlanta. I just wanted to let you know how much I love this podcast, how much it inspires me to keep going despite the regular life shit that everyone, including musicians, go through. We may not be all murderers or victims, but we all got shit. You know what I mean.
Starting point is 00:15:49 Anyways, thanks for humanizing. Much love. you know what you know what 205 i hear you this is uh in all seriousness we all got the shit we all have shit to deal with every single one of us and i remember i was once a full-time musician and it was the hardest fucking thing i ever tried to do in my life i did not succeed at it to the level that i wanted to i couldn't raise my family while i was doing it it was a huge letdown it fucking gutted me it gutted my confidence and at the end of the day day I would wake up or I'd go to bed and I'd be like, what am I even doing this for? Do I even
Starting point is 00:16:26 want to do this? Do I love this? And thankfully, I kept doing something and I found this little niche for myself. So 205, you sound like you sound like you got a good optimistic head on your shoulders. Keep going. Keep digging. Keep digging disgrace land as well. Thank you for writing. one thing I tell my kids all the time, and I'll say this to whoever will listen because someone said it to me about 20 years ago and it really resonated. Just show up. Just keep showing up. And good shit happens. All right. That's enough of the life affirmation section of this podcast. Let's go on. Let's do another text here. 856. Jake, all caps. Four exclamation points. Kristen from the 856 here. Long time listener, 2019, parentheses. First time.
Starting point is 00:17:16 I'm Textor, 2023 parentheses. Listen, I need all caps. An after party theme song ringtone, like I need air to breathe, like I need music to live and like I need disgrace land on my rides to and from work to transport me out of the Monday daily grinds. Please, please, please make that happen.
Starting point is 00:17:32 Keep up the greatness, Jake. I love what you're doing. Thanks. Well, Frankie, what is the name of the theme song here for after party? It's the one we did for the Sinatra episode. I can't think of the name. but you know I love that song too and I long have designs on doing a double disgrace land album double vinyl where we do a bunch of songs the themes a bunch of cues whole bunch of stuff so maybe Kristen maybe
Starting point is 00:18:00 sometime soon we'll get that out there um god so many texts I feel bad oh uh 402 I asked this question last week in the last after party about the uh what are your favorite 80s horror movies 402 chimes in favorite 80s horror movies. Number one, fright night, never saw it. Number two, lost boys saw it. I think it's really damn good. Number three, nightmare on Elm Street, don't love it. Number four, Poltergeis, you heard me talk about that last week. Number five, Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice, solid. I like the ranking of Beetlejuice as a horror movie, because check this out. You wouldn't think, I wouldn't think Beal Juice is a horror movie, but you wouldn't necessarily show it to your nine-year-old son either, would you? Because it would be? Because it would freak him the fuck out,
Starting point is 00:18:37 because it's scary. Michael Keaton's scary to little kids. Scary. So, I like that list. Thank you. 4.02. All right. Couple more. 410 says, hey, Jake, husband and I are on vacation in Barcelona and found your store, and they send a picture here. It says rock and rolla. I like that. Thank you for thinking to me. It's rockerola. You know that though. But I like, I get it. I get it. Rock enrola, rock a rolla. I hear you. Appreciate that. You're on vacation. You're thinking to disgrace land. That's awesome. 518. Hey, Jake, not sure if you've ever done anything on the band. I think there might be enough craze debauch for an episode or two.
Starting point is 00:19:16 Thanks, love the show, Chuck. I think you're right, Chuck. I'm saving that one. I have a lot of love and a lot of affection for all the members of the band, and I'm looking forward to covering that at some point. No plans right now, though. I'm not going to lie to you.
Starting point is 00:19:28 Hey, Jake, it's Nicole in Buffalo. This is from the 716. These are her top five horror movies. Hey, Jake, it's Nicole in Buffalo, my top 580s horror films. One, Video Dome. I've never seen that. Two, Psycho 2.
Starting point is 00:19:40 Didn't even know there was a Psycho 2. Three, the Lost Boys, another Lost Boys, four, the Shining, five, Nightmare on Elm Street. I think I have to, I think I gotta reconsider, I think I need to re-watch a nightmare on Elm Street. The Shining, though, right up there. Right up there.
Starting point is 00:19:58 Fantastic. You know what I didn't mention when we were talking horror movies, and it's not from the 80s, but it's one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. Have you guys ever seen The Strangers? Or it might be just called Strangers. It's like 2010.
Starting point is 00:20:12 12, 13, something like that in that time frame, I think. And they made it for about $10. Live Tyler's in it, actually. Really good movie. You know, people go away to a house. People in the house get terrorized by other people outside of the house. That's basically the plot, but it's fucking horrifying. Check that out.
Starting point is 00:20:32 All right. Let's see here. Where are we going? That's a lot of texts. And I apologize to all the people who texted and who I did not yet get back to. I will find some time this week. and I'll hit you back. Keep them coming.
Starting point is 00:20:43 61790666-6638 if you want to text me or leave me a voicemail. Let's see. You can also email me at disgraceland. No, sorry, email me disgraceland pod at gmail.com. I've been shitty with returning emails, guys. I apologize for this. I'll try to be better. I wanted to respond to this one here from R.C. Jackson.
Starting point is 00:21:05 R.C., I didn't know that was a name, R.C. Jackson. I googled R.C. Jackson. Anyways, R.C. Jackson, email address, R.C. Jackson, not going to tell you her email. Her subject line is Do a Lil' Kim episode message from her drug mule days to the feud with Foxy Brown that led to a shooting at Hot 97, to her dating the drugpin who killed Mike Tyson's brother. She'd be a great episode. Yeah, well, I hear you. I hear you, RSI. 620, June 20th, Lil Kim episode coming your way. You will be happy, I hope. that's because we have a whole new season of disgrace land coming. Season 12 coming on May 16th. I'm going to get this Badland season launch.
Starting point is 00:21:47 Then we're going to go into another season of disgrace land. Straight away, we'll have both going at the same time. In that new disgrace land season, you're going to get Lil Kim. Like I said, you're going to get Springsteen, Justin Bieber. So many. I can't even remember off the top of my head right now, but there's a lot coming your way. Little Kim included. All right, guys, be like RSI and hit me up.
Starting point is 00:22:06 Disgracelandpod at gmail.com or 617906. 66638 or at this grace slam pod on TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, even Twitter. Meaty Tim on TikTok writes, hooked on your podcast, one of my favorite music history ones for sure. Why thank you, Meaty Tim. Ashley Vaughn on Facebook writes, hey Jake, love the podcast, been listening for years, love the way you tell the stories and make the listener completely involved. It's great. I think a great story would be about Ginger Baker, ever thought of doing an episode on him.
Starting point is 00:22:37 Peace. Ashley, thank you. I appreciate that. I love getting you guys involved. Honestly, I want to find new ways to get you guys involved. So if you got any ideas, let me know. Ginger Baker, cool suggestion. I'm going to admit, I don't know a lot about Ginger Baker or cream other than the Clapton
Starting point is 00:22:54 connection, but maybe I'll check that out. Chet Baker, though, in your feeds, if you're just looking for a Baker episode. I don't know. All right. What am I, let's see, what am we doing here? I gave you some top five horror rankings. I want to do this Facebook from Courtney Ford on Facebook, this message that she sent. Let me pull this up straight away.
Starting point is 00:23:16 One, two, three. Getting in here with the Courtney Ford. What is she saying? Okay, there's a lot here. All right, yeah, this is why I wanted to read this. Okay, so top 80s horror from Courtney Ford, Evil Dead. Have you seen Ash versus Evil Dead? No, I have not.
Starting point is 00:23:31 I have seen the Evil Dead, though. It's awesome. The Shining. Great. Maximum Overdrive. Great suggestion. Way to go, Courtney. Don of the Dead and reanimator. She says, I refuse to rank Hitchcock.
Starting point is 00:23:42 It seems blasphemous. I disagree. I think there's a lot of Hitchcock that you can rank because there's a lot of Hitchcock that, frankly, I don't love. But, of course, I love, I love so much Hishcock. Don't get pissed at me, Hitchcock fans. And she says, and are you forgetting clerks for 90s movies? I'm not, or I guess I just didn't love it.
Starting point is 00:24:02 I mean, it's great. It's good. Not great. It's good. I don't love it, though. She's still pulling for Pat and she says that she wants a Mike Patton from Faith No More episode of disgrace land. Maybe someday, Courtney. Maybe someday.
Starting point is 00:24:15 All righty. Let's move on. Let's do some Instagram responses real quick. Celia Jones Cracko says, hey Jake, I know you're always asking that we are listening, what we are listening to, what are we listening to, what are we watching, what are we reading, et cetera, for suggestions for you to try out. So I was wondering if you heard about the new series on FX and Hulu about Tupac called Dear Mama. You know, I have not. And this is an issue. How the hell do I not hear about this?
Starting point is 00:24:42 Do you guys know about this? I feel like there's a new series on Tupac Shakur coming out about his mom and him that we should know. And it sounds like it's actually out. But I'm looking forward to that. Celia goes on to mention that, you know, we talk about Tupac's mom and the Black Panther, not only in the Tupac episodes, but also the JZ episode, which we do. So thank you for that suggestion. Celia.
Starting point is 00:25:07 Appreciate it. Over on Twitter, Mark Schumacher writes, listening to the after party and wanted to share my top five horror films in the 1980s. Hellraiser number one, number two, American Werewolf and London,
Starting point is 00:25:17 number three, the reanimator, number four, the creeps show, number five, the Hitcher. Man, I've only seen one on that list, American Werewolf in London, which might be in my top five. I didn't put it there last time we talked. I should have.
Starting point is 00:25:28 I love, love that movie. Great movie. All right. My people, I really appreciate all the messages. I love the connection. Thank you. Keep it coming. Keep it coming this week at Disgracelampod on Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, and Facebook, disgracelandpod at gmail.com.
Starting point is 00:25:43 6179066638 voicemail and text. Badlands launches next week and I want feedback on the Richard Pryor episode. So hit me up, hit me up, hit me up. I'll be back after this. So the recommendations part. This is the recommendations part. The part where we recommend the things that need recommending the recommendations part. All right.
Starting point is 00:26:16 I did some traveling over the last couple weeks. I got a little R&R. I was down in the great state of Florida for almost a week. I got some time to take in some content. And whoa, Nelly, did I consume some stuff? I watched a lot of television. I watched a lot of movies. I even read for pleasure, just a little.
Starting point is 00:26:33 Quick heads up, though. Before we get into all these recommendations, I just want to mention that the movies and TV part of the recommendations part of the after-party bit will now exclusively be featured in the rap party, which is the Badlands bonus episode that you'll be getting on. Fridays in the Badlands Feed.
Starting point is 00:26:50 So this is the last time the movie content will be here in the after party. Again, you're going to have to go to the Badlands Feed and subscribe over there. So on to the recommendations. Without further ado, let's start with what I'm reading. I'm reading The Death of Bunny Monroe by Nick Cave. My God, man. This book is so fucking good. It's one of those books you read that has an immediate impact on you.
Starting point is 00:27:18 Like in the moment. Like you're just like, oh, God. This is how, oh, okay, I get it. Yeah, I see. I see now. It is hysterical. It's dark. It's deeply cool in a way that I'm not even going to try to describe because I can't.
Starting point is 00:27:40 The closest thing I can say to describing this book is that it's, if Charles Kukowski and Raymond Chandler got drunk together, then got arrested, and ended up spending a week in the drunk tank with one another. You might come close to getting a feel for what this book is. The Death of Bunny Monroe by Nick Cave. That's the musician Nick Cave. I want to run and read everything the guy's written after this. A lot of you have recommended Nick Cave as an episode of Disgraceland. will happen at some point once I get a complete picture of the artist and that's going to take a while.
Starting point is 00:28:25 I love this man and I love this book. Go check it out. Excuse me. For those of you didn't hear that, my stomach just growled. If you did hear it, I apologize. Maybe Leah, our producer here will be able to cut it out. Maybe not. Who knows? We're going rough here. Okay. I also watched on Netflix with my wife a show called Obsession which is basically softcore pornography. It was number one or two on the Netflix chart when like trending shows. And it was English and had this guy in it who was in this like Harlem-Cobin series that we liked
Starting point is 00:29:04 that was also English. So we're like, oh, we'll try this. And a lot of sex, lot of sex immediately, like from the jump. And we're like, this is cool. It's done tastefully, you know, it's English. and just waiting for something else to happen, as one does. And nothing really happened.
Starting point is 00:29:25 It's a bad show, man. But I watched all of it. It's only four episodes, mini-series. If you want to laugh or, you know, you want something to do with your wife or your husband or whomever, check it out. Netflix and Chill with obsession. All right.
Starting point is 00:29:40 Also watched, I've got to get into these movies, man. These movies, I watched some great fucking movies. I watched side effects. It's the Stephen Soderberg director, guy. Soderberg did this movie with Jude Law and Rune Mara. I believe it's Rune Mara. And Catherine Zeta Jones. It's from 2013, I believe.
Starting point is 00:30:04 And it's about, it's very Hitchcockian. It's like, it's kind of, I don't want to go into it. I don't want to give you the plot. It takes place with this. therapist, a patient, and big pharma, and the twist is fantastic. The movie's just great. I was thinking about it for days afterwards. I also bit the bullet. I subscribe to Criterion Channel, and they have this whole, like, what do they call it, erotic thriller collection on there. So I watched Body Heat with William Hurt and Kathleen Turner. I've known about this movie forever.
Starting point is 00:30:45 I thought it was just cheesy, like a soft core kind of porn thing. But it's filmed in Florida, and I'm interested in stuff from Florida, Florida content, Florida history these days for whatever reason. So I thought I'd give it a shot. And it blew me away. It's so much better than I thought it was going to be. I thought it was going to be like this cheesy, like kind of like, well, erotic thriller, which it definitely is. But it is not cheesy. It's fucking great.
Starting point is 00:31:09 The cast is great. It's got a young early Ted Danson in it, along with William Hurt. It's got, oh man, I can't remember the guy's name. It's just really a tremendous, tremendous movie. And I didn't realize it was a sort of re-up on double indemnity, which was an old movie from 1939 or 1940, which is a famous movie, which I saw it many, many, many years ago. I didn't put two and two together,
Starting point is 00:31:37 but now I'm going to go watch and watch double indemnity as well. Anyways, body heat, check that out. Also, you know, what I'm watching here, This is new. This is new. This is like, this treasure trove of content has been sitting right here in front of me for well over a year now. And I have not discovered this. Okay. So cord cutters out there, right? How are you feeling? How are you feeling about your decision? Well, everyone was cutting the cords, right? I'm done with cable. I'm not, I'm not doing it. It's too much money. Well, yeah, we all know what happened. Then you get Netflix. You got to pay for Disney, HBO, Max, Hulu, the whole thing. by the end of the day comes, you're still spending the same amount you're sending to Xfinity every month, right? The problem for me
Starting point is 00:32:20 is I like the ritual of, I'm an old guy, I guess. I like the ritual of flicking through the channels, not to mention all the live sports, and I know you can get that elsewhere, blah, blah, blah, but the experience is not the same.
Starting point is 00:32:33 But I don't like that experience that much. In fact, I find the selections on the cable channels to suck, and I pay for all of it. We have like the, whatever the max thing is. I don't even know. I can't even imagine it's whatever.
Starting point is 00:32:47 It's gross. But it sucks. I mean, you know, I don't care about like, you know, like the home shows and all that crap. They build you into these packages because you want one channel out of the 30. You got to get it. It's a whole fucking pain in the ass. And I'm trying to figure out a way. Where do I go?
Starting point is 00:33:02 What do I do? How do I get the stuff I want, you know? Right? So on Samsung, on Samsung TV, and I swear to God, this is not a paid for Samsung ad. I just discovered there's all these channels, as you guys probably know, because you're smart. like me, all these Samsung channels. And they're just like, there's like a thousand channels. I'm not even joking, like a thousand channels of insanely cool stuff.
Starting point is 00:33:24 And none of it is on demand. And it just runs. There's a whole, there's two channels. One plays all 80s music videos, just constantly. Just constantly. All 90s music video channels, videos on the other channel. 90s and 80s all day long. It's like I'm 14 again.
Starting point is 00:33:41 And I'm trapped watching MTV, which was an, experience that I complained about then because of the commercials. In 80% of the videos, I thought sucked and I would just suffer through them. Well, now I have all this nostalgia for them and I will gladly watch them. Just fed to me, just drop the IV into my veins, send me the fucking nostalgia content because I don't want to go on YouTube. I'm never going to go on YouTube and search, you know, an obscure Madonna video that was a hit that I've forgotten about. But if you put this on, it's just going to play and it's going to get all the stuff. Not to mention, there's a Carol Burnett channel.
Starting point is 00:34:16 There's this great, you know, the Shout Factory, who I know they make these documentaries, these music documentaries, that's how I know. The Shout Factory Network played Living in Oblivion. And they played that after they played Losing It, which was Tom Cruise's first movie. Just great fucking content, man. You guys probably know this already.
Starting point is 00:34:33 This costs nothing. If you have a Samsung TV, and again, this is not an ad, you can have access to all this stuff. Go get it. I got it. I'm stoked. I'm watching it. Who knows?
Starting point is 00:34:45 I might get sick of it. I might give up in the next couple days. I'm going to dig in more, though, by the next after party, or I should say the next rap party when we're talking TV and film. I'll chime in on my latest Samsung TV network, whatever the hell it's called, discoveries, and I know I'm going to find some cool shit for you. So moving on, what I'm listening to, this is simple.
Starting point is 00:35:06 It's Willie Nelson. It's the demo sessions by Willie Nelson. these are his early, early, early recordings. It's just him in a guitar. These songs, man, God damn, they're good. They're incredible. This is the early stuff.
Starting point is 00:35:22 It's him. It's his voice. It's just him in a guitar. It's so rich. This record I've listened to it, it's not a record. It's a collection, right? It wasn't an album.
Starting point is 00:35:31 They're just demos that were released maybe, I don't know, 2002 or 2003 on CD. And I've listened to these, this is the type of thing you is put on you listen to it all night over and over and over and over and you get drunk with it and your your whole mood changes with it and you see things you hadn't seen before and you hear things you hadn't heard before and you think things you hadn't thought before. It's tremendous.
Starting point is 00:35:57 The demo sessions by Willie Nelson, go get it. I'll be back after this. Let's recap, shall we? Number one, Willie Nelson is out now. It's a two-parter.
