All right, discos, let's get into it. All right, the World Cup is over. England broke my heart and many others as well. So let's just move on, all right? Okay, real quick, though, England, not being in the finals,

is more of a loss for rock and roll than it was for England. That's how I like to look at it. It is summertime discos, so I thought that I would do a public service for you all in the after party today and give you some of my summer recommendations, books, records, movie shows that I've been consuming, content that I have consumed in the past, all of it, appropriate summer fair, nothing too heavy, all right? We're going to keep this stuff tight. We're going to keep this stuff light-ish, I should

say. It's still disgrace land. So you get the point. There's going to be some darkness. This is the stuff that's meant, though, to be right on the beach in a plane, at the hotel, or at the Airbnb, wherever. First up, Schindler's list. No, I'm. I'm going to be. kidding. I'm tempted to recommend the film that I watched last night. Bradley Cooper's is this thing on because it is incredible. Will Arnett, Laura Dern, Bradley Cooper's in it, but it's mainly his film because he directed it. He's got a small part in the movie. He's great. He steals the show, as always. But this movie's also a tear fest, and that's not what we're doing today. We're doing summer movies, Okay, and summer music, and summer books, and summer TV series.

So, I'm going to start with music because this is, after all, a music podcast. And so may I direct your attention to the new day rising album from New Day Rising album from 1985 by Minneapolis's Husker Do. This record is a great record. Start to finish legit. No skips. But that's not why. I'm recommending it. I'm recommending it because ever since TV snack break made that Instagram meme of this album cover, the New Day Rising album cover, photoshopped with a still from Seinfeld, the one where George Costanza is lurking on the beach behind his boss, Mr. Kroger's family. In what was presumably the summer of George, I think that's what we're one episode that was. I could be wrong.

and then put Costanza, okay, that's what the artist, TV snack break did, he put Costanza in the iconic Husker Do font with Kroger Day Rising beneath it, obviously a spoof on Husker Do's New Day Rising. I have been blasting this album through the speakers here in my studio for the last couple of weeks. It's just incredible. I've loved this album since I was 15 years old. I've never gotten sick of it. And specifically, the song celebrated Summer, which, is just a perfect pop song.

It's one of those Husker Do songs that the punk rock purists hated, at least when I was a kid, they hated it, kids in my neighborhood who were punks. It was just so catchy, and it was poppy, like I said, and dare I say, sentimental. But it's the good kind of sentimental. It's kind of the only kind of sentimental that Husker do's Bob Mould does,

meaning that the sentimentality is arched up by, a hidden layer of melancholy and infinite sadness, okay? Go ask Billy Corgan about these lyrics. Check them out. Listen, love and hate was in the air like pollen from a flower. Somewhere in April time, they had another hour. I guess I better think up a way to spend my time just when I'm ready to sit inside. It's summertime. Should I go swimming or get a friend to hang around? It's back to summer. It's back to basics. Hang around. Getting drunk on the beach or playing in a band and getting out of school, meant getting out of hand. Was this your celebrated summer?

Eat your heart out, Billy Corgan. I don't mean to be giving Billy Corgan shit, even though it sounds like I am. But I guess what I'm saying is that without Bob Mould, you don't get Billy Corgan. Despite all my rage, I'm still just a rat in a cage. I don't know if that's good or bad.

Depends, I guess, on your feelings about smashing pumpkins. I like smashing pumpkins. We've got a smashing pumpkins episode coming up in a few weeks in the feed. And I don't necessarily think it's going to make Billy Corgan a fan a disgrace sign, which is a shame because, like I said, we're fans of his around here, despite what Zeth wrote in this episode. Anyway, that is my summer music recommendation.

Celebrated Summer, the song by Husker Doe, off of Husker Do's New Day Rising. You can't go wrong with the entire album. My summer book recommendation, I have two, okay? The first one I'm going to give to the more, you know, sophisticated, let's call them. Sophisticated, listen, sophisticated readers, excuse me. Because the second one I'm going to give you is not sophisticated at all.

The first one, I just read it on vacation. Raymond Chandler's Farewell, My Lovely, okay? It's incredible. Ememomatic Raymond Chandler novel. If you've never read Raymond Chandler, if you've never read a Chandler book with his iconic Philip Marlowe character, this is a great one to start with. It's gum shoe noir. That's, it's the blueprint for the detective novels.

Okay. It's fantastic. It's exactly what you'd expect. It's not going to make you think too hard, but it might make you drink a little more, which is a good enough reason for me to call this an easy summer read. But, you know, it's kind of sophisticated, okay? It's Raymond Chandler, all right?

But it's not as easy, and it's not as light as my next recommendation. It's going to sound weird to you. I also read this one on vacation. It's Wise Guy by Nicholas Pilegi. Now, I was flying to Europe on Latonza Airlines, if I'm saying that correctly. La Thunza. And I was like, hey, wouldn't it be cool to read about the Latunza heist on the flight?

And that's why I finally grabbed Wise Guy off my shelf, which I've owned for some time but never read. And of course, Wise Guy by Nicholas Pilegy is the book that they based Goodfellows on. And I thought it was going to be, I don't really know what I thought, but I got something a little different than what I was expecting. I guess what I was expecting was. a lot of vagueness in the storytelling the kind of kernels

of what the stories became in the film but God man some of the storytelling is verbatim from this book in the language as well and it's really great to see how much

of Henry Hill's voice his storytelling voice I should say ended up in the movie fantastic stuff and just if you want like revelatory facts and crimes that were committed that didn't make it in the movie. The book is fantastic as well.

This is one great anecdote where they're talking about how they were just such thieves, such scammers. And they had a guy, they had an inn at a grocery store. I believe it was somewhere in Queens or somewhere, no, somewhere in like more of a suburban area of New York. And this guy who worked at the grocery store brought in a construction company to build an 11th aisle, right? You know, you have different aisles in the grocery store.

You know, I mean checkout aisle. You have different lanes you can check out in. There were 10 of them. He had an 11th bill with another 11th cash register. And it was open, it was running for like a year. And every dollar that that checkout lane collected was stolen. It was pure profit for these gangsters. They didn't catch up to the scam until this guy went on like his summer vacation or something.

And he took some time off and somebody else came in and was like, hey, what the fuck? We don't know. We're not supposed to have 11 checkout lanes and 11 cash registers. I thought that was fascinating. There's a bunch of stuff like that in the book. And that book is Wise Guy by Nicholas Pilegi. He also co-wrote the script with Scorsese. You're going to love it.

All right. My movie wreck. I already kind of gave you the Bradley Cooper thing. Is this thing on as a wreck, kind of sneaky wreck? but it's not a feel-good hit of the summer, as Faith No More's Mike Patton would say. It's, so I've got to recommend something else. Okay, I'm currently also watching Gamora,

which is way too dark, so I can't recommend that. So what I'm going to do is I'm going to recommend Spike Lee's clockers. And it's not feel-good, so to speak, but it does have a hot and sticky summer vibe. And Zeth and I reference it a shit ton in our new, this film should be played loud episode on Do the Right Thing, which is the ultimate summer.

movie, do the right thing. So if you want to frame a reference, then you can do no wrong by watching Spike Lee's Clockers and by reading the novel by Richard Price as well. It's because it's fantastic. Though I wouldn't call that a summer read, but it's also fantastic. It's just great. All right, summer TV series recommendation. Okay, this one is big. It's scary. It's popcorny as hell. So those things make it summary, but it's also super dark. But not dark enough to take a off my list. And that is the Cape Fear series, the remake of the classic De Niro-Mitcham films. The series on Apple TV with Javier Bardem is, and Amy Adams, is, it's amazing. It's so good. It's the definition of a great remake for a million reasons. I don't want to go into it here.

Zeth can't stand this. He hates it. I love it. And I'm thinking that maybe Zeth and I should come on and debate this series. I think that might be fun. It wraps. It rapsed. in a week or so. So it's available for all of you to binge right now on Apple TV. I cannot say enough about this weird, fucked up thing, this remake, this series. And I bet a bunch of you are already watching this and I want to hear what you have to say about it. And I also think maybe a bunch of you like Zeth started it and just couldn't get into it. And I want to hear why you don't like it. It's just, I love it. They even lose the air conditioning in an episode, which is quintessential summer viewing. So those are my wrecks. Music, New Day Rye,

How could we forget the grittiest, grimyest, true DIY rock and roll band, Dead Moon from Portland, Oregon. Fred and Judy Cole married in 1967, Fred's story alone. is insane.

I mean, he played with like Soul Axe in the 1960s. That he opened up for Stevie Wonder under the name Deep Soul Cole was in the weeds and the lollipop shop that opened up for Janice Joplin and so many of the other bands back in the day. And then dodging the giraffe,

his band broke down in Portland, Oregon where he met Tudy. They married in 1967. He was in a million bands, zipper throughout the 70s. eventually fed up with flaking musicians, he got his wife to play bass. And they started a band throughout the 80s

called The Rats, which featured Sam Henry from the Wipers, another great Portland band. Eventually, they turned into Dead Moon that played for years and years. I think they even turned down touring with Nirvana because they already

had a prior engagement with another band they were supposed to tour with. Tudy bought fred the actual cutting, vinyl cutting machine that cut the infamous Louis Louis 7 inch from the Kingsman, who were also from Portland, and they would

record themselves and actually cut their own vinyl records on this machine. Their story's insane and eventually started being called pierced arrows. That's also just gritty and raw and amazing. Until Fred died and she's now playing kind of keeping the dead moon thing alive so she's out on the road touring right now. But yes, Fred and Judy Cole, they're amazing.

Dead Moon. Check them out. Holy shit. Johnny Magnifico, thank you so much. I know nothing about this. I know so little about Dead Moon, Fred, and Judy Cole that I'm almost questioning whether or not you're making this whole thing up to fuck with me. But I don't think you are. Fiona Apple, which is just incredible. Amazing. So there you go, 917. I don't know where the Fiona. Apple episode is. It was on the list. It's still on the list. I just don't know a good way into her story. You know, I kind of want to write it as like it's like a one act where she's trapped in a room for all night with Paul Thomas Anderson and quitting Tarantino in a mound of cocaine and she somehow survives that fucking atrocity. But I just, I don't have a good angle on Fiona Apple yet.

until the end of the band, not the beginning of it. The whole UCLA connection was wild. And at the end of the day, Jim died due to general self-abuse with the booze and drugs. And it's possible. The average white band message. Okay, I just listened to your Jim Morrison death episode, and it all sounds very plausible. The tale of mistaking horse for snow,

that's heroin for cocaine, reminds me of the sad tale of the average white band, who were then riding high on the novelty of being a great funk band from Scotland, only to almost lose it all in disgraceful tragedy. The tale of Robbie, Macintosh seems like a story perfect for an episode. Anyway, a little while back you were asking people about artists who took an experimental left turn and I wanted to submit sound effects by the jam.

Before this, much of their output didn't stray far from the jangly retro pop mod nods to the kinks, the small faces, and the who. Sound effects was their departure with angular new wave, perhaps inspired by XTC, Gang of Four and perhaps the success of the police with lots of dub-influenced studio experimentation that leaned into art school way more than their reputation previously suggested. I love the Wendy O'Williams episode. I wanted to go back in time, knock the gun away, and tell her that the 21st century needs her, but I digress. My rock and roll time machine would be working overtime to try to get to Otis Redding before we stepped on that plane and walking me is about a home on that night. It's late as I type and I got work to do. So Jake, Zeth, and company,
