Starting point is 00:02:02 Hey, discos, need a little more disgrace land in your life? Just a touch to get you through? Yeah, me too. This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome to Disgraceland, the After Party. Welcome to the Disgraceland bonus episode, a little thing we like to call the after party. This is the show after the show, the party after the party, the bridge to get you from one full episode of Disgraceland to the other, the backyard to dig into the dirt. On this episode, we are talking about, among other things, the Riza, Rayquan, Method Man, Ghostface Killer, and the ongoing saga of Wu-Tang clan.
Starting point is 00:02:54 And of course, your voicemails, texts, DMs, and more. As always, a whole lot of rosy. All right, discos, let's get into it. So we are just about halfway through our serialized season on Wutank Clan, our first ever serialized season of Disgraceland, and I'm dying to know what you guys think of this. Are you into it? Are you into the serialized storytelling?
Starting point is 00:03:26 Do you like having an episode on each member? Are you pumped? Are you dying for the next one? Speaking of the next one, before we get into that, let's recap where we've been with the series so far, okay? Real quick here. Just the last two weeks, we've dropped episodes on the Rizza, Rayquan, Method Man, and Ghost Face Killer. And there's a lot going on in these episodes.
Starting point is 00:03:45 Shootouts, dice games, drug bust, voodoo rituals, and, of course, great music. Not just Wu Tang's music, but the music that inspired Wu Tang Clan, the Delphonics, the temptations, Big Daddy Kane, Run DMC, Heavy D, Stacks, Records, Kung Fu Soundtracks, the list goes on and on. But at the heart of the narrative of this Wu-Tang Clan story, there is this ongoing investigation. into Wu as a front for gun running and crime. A totally bonkers investigation started by cops in New York and in Ohio, actually, that eventually bubbled up to the ATF and then all the way to the FBI, the FBI, who for years labeled Wu-Tang Clan internally with the code 281F,
Starting point is 00:04:26 which is bureau speak for major criminal organization, as in the Gambino Crime family. This is insane. So in the coming weeks, we've got even more crazy, whacked out stories from Shaolin. Next week, we're dropping an episode on Inpected Deck, and now his time behind bars as a kid helped him develop his hip-hop persona. Also, we've got an episode on Capadonna, the honorary 10th member of the group, who unknowingly introduced a federal informant into the clan's inner circle at the time that they were being investigated. So there's that. And yes, ODB is coming. So be patient.
Starting point is 00:05:00 We're going to get there soon enough. As you've probably noticed, we're pausing this week. to give you a breather and let you catch up with this series. To tide you over, we're releasing the previously exclusive episode on Ringo Star. Why Ringo, you ask? How does Ringo connect with Wu-Tang Clan? Well, check out the episode to find out. It might not be what you think.
Starting point is 00:05:21 Definitely not as easy a connection as Wu-Tang to Bruce Lee, the legendary martial arts artist and movie star, one of the many inspirations from the world of Kung Fu onto Wu. To celebrate that connection tomorrow in your disgrace. feed, you've got an archive episode all about Bruce Lee from Badlands. That's the other show that I host, if you don't know about that. So look out for that one. All right, I want to circle back to my question here at the top of the show. What are you guys thinking about the serialized season? Should we do more of these? And if so, what band or artist would be perfect for this long-form storytelling?
Starting point is 00:05:53 Are there other groups out there with multiple members that could warrant their own episodes? Who do you have? Grateful Dead? That's what I'm thinking, right? Do we do a whole season on the dead? Don't say the Stones. Don't say the Beatles, because we've a good. exhausted those that subject matter almost completely to this point we've done a ton of episodes on those guys uh what other group could we do over an entire uh 10 episode series i think there's some artists single artists like rick james enough crime in his background we could get 10 episodes of that johnny cash we could probably get 10 episodes on but i want to keep a group focused if we can and i want to do these pretty infrequently maybe one a year i obviously am not going to mess too much with
Starting point is 00:06:35 the format, if at all, with disgrace. I like the anthology series we got going on. But this Wu-Tang Dang may end up being a one-time event. I don't know. We may do more. I'm trying to get some feedback here. So far, the response has been positive. But I'm hearing about it mostly on social media.
Starting point is 00:06:50 And to be honest with you guys, I feel like we have more of a direct connection here in the podcast over the phone line, 617-9066638. So let me know what you're thinking on this series. Do you want more serialized seasons of decades? disgrace land. I'll leave me a voicemail, just like this one from the 317. Hey, it's from 317. And my name's Evet. I wanted to call about your Bon Jovi episode where you were talking about, you know, not really digging it when you were, you know, at that age and everything. And I just thought it was great because I have a funny little story about Bon Jovi. So I feel the same way as you.
Starting point is 00:07:31 I was definitely more into a lot of the different stuff at that time, more of the punker type punk scene, but kind of hated the whole hair band thing. And so now I am actually married to a musician, and he is in a Bon Jovi tribute band. So it's rather funny that it's circled back around. He is not the John Bon Jovi person. and he's the actual keyboard player, David Bryan. So it's pretty funny, and we actually, it's like a little inside joke we have that, you know, I have to go listen to Bon Jovi now all the time. But I do have a respect for it now that I'm older.
Starting point is 00:08:16 It's just kind of like what you said, too, that it's just a little more different. Now I have a different respect for it. You know, they were doing their thing. They were having a good time. Nothing wrong with that. And, you know, I'm 53 now. So I kind of look at it a lot differently. So I just thought it was interesting and wanted to share that.
Starting point is 00:08:35 And I enjoy your podcast so much. I listen to it all the time when I'm driving. And I did just discover Badlands recently. So I've been getting into that. And just really enjoy it. I love all the work you put into it and the spend that you put on everything. So really enjoy it. Keep doing what you're doing.
Starting point is 00:08:51 All right. Thanks for the voicemail, Yvette. I feel like we've stumbled upon a theme here amongst the disgrace slam listeners, and that is this sort of later in life open-mindedness toward music we hate it as kids. I get it a vet. Being married to a musician in a Bon Jovi tribute band as a former punk kid is definitely an interesting turn of events. But yeah, I can't say I would react any differently than you do than you are, I should say. All right, let's check out this voicemail from the 803.
Starting point is 00:09:23 Hey Jake, it's Jamie from the 803 down here in South Carolina. First of all, love your podcast. Absolutely love them. I have a very boring job and you make it much more interesting. So thank you for that. One comment I wanted to make on the actors playing people, Bohemian Rhapsody. My oldest son was absolutely addicted to the Queen live performance at live age when he was younger, like literally three, four years old. that's what he wanted to watch.
Starting point is 00:09:54 He's now 17 and is in position. But we watched that so many times, and it's absolutely astounding how shot by shot they recreated that. Raymond and Alec, first of all, is insanely good. I'm a Freddie Mercury junkie and just insanely good, but just shot per shot, that live a thing is outrageous. It's amazing. Thanks for what you do, may I keep it up, rock a roller.
Starting point is 00:10:26 Thanks, Jamie. You're welcome. This is a rap party question here, but it's about music. So that's why we're going to fuck with it here in this after party bonus episode. I agree with you for a movie. I didn't love Bohemian Rhapsody. I thought the live aid scene, though, and Robbie Malick's performance were both great. So there's that. So I'm with you.
Starting point is 00:10:48 Okay. Let's check out this one. from Hollow in the 956. Yo, what's up, Jayo from the 956, responding to you saying that you want to know a little bit. I did leave a message before. Reason being, I've been doing it for 14 years. Of course, not as mainstream,
Starting point is 00:11:19 but make a great effort. Just leaving this message, hopefully you get back, and you have a good one, rock and roll. Great to meet you, Hollow. Thanks for introducing yourself. I admit I know next to nothing about horror. core. But I'm here. I'm here to learn more, my man. All right. So send me some links. I delved into some horror core in the M&M episode. But, you know, I think it's, that was a while
Starting point is 00:12:01 ago, and it was in reference to music that was from even a further while back. So, why don't you send me some links to let me know what you're talking about. All right, Hall. Thanks for the call. Everyone, thanks for the voicemails. Thanks for the text. You know how to reach me. 617-906-66-66-36-38. You want to leave me a voicemail on any we're discussing here in disgrace land. This week's question is, who would you want us to cover in another serialized season if we did this again, The Grateful Dead?
Starting point is 00:12:26 Who are we talking about? Traveling Wilburys? I don't fucking know. It's not traveling Wilburys. What's the serialized season we're going to do? We're going to talk about one artist over 10 episodes if we do this again. Who?
Starting point is 00:12:39 The who? Not the who. The dead? I kind of already did the Stones and the Beatles, like I mentioned. Zeth wants to do new edition, but I don't think that's going to happen. 617-906-66-36-3-8.
Starting point is 00:12:48 All right, I'm going to take a quick break. I'll be back after this with the answers to your text and your DMs. There's two golden rules that any man should live by. Rule one, never mess with a country girl. You play stupid games, you get stupid prizes. And rule two, never mess with her friends either. We always say that trust your girlfriends. I'm Anna Sinfield.
Starting point is 00:13:26 And in this new season of the girlfriends, Oh my God, this is the same man. A group of women discover they've all dated the same prolific con artist. I felt like I got hit by a truck. I thought, how could this happen to me? The cops didn't seem to care. So they take matters into their own hands. I said, oh, hell no.
Starting point is 00:13:46 I vowed. I will be his last target. He's going to get what he deserves. Listen to the girlfriends. Trust me, babe. On the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. This season on Dear Chelsea with me, Chelsea Handler, we have some fantastic guests like Amelia Clark. When like young people come up to me and they want to be an act or whatever,
Starting point is 00:14:15 my first thing is always, can you think of anything else that you can do? Rather be disappointed in. Do that. Dennis Leary. I wake up and I'm hitting him in the head with a water bomb. And Bruce Jenner is on the aisle in a karate stance like he's about to attack me. Like, making karate. noises. And here's the entire the Kardashian family over there, everybody's going,
Starting point is 00:14:39 and the air marshal is trying to grab my arms and screaming. And I immediately know that I've been asleep walking. David O'Yellowo. I love this podcast, whether it's therapy or relationships or religion or sex or addiction or you just go straight for the guts. Guy Branham. So anyway, Nicole Kymann, broke up with Keith Thurban. Being half of a country couple was always a hat she was going to wear, not like a life she was going to lead. Oh, interesting. I like that.
Starting point is 00:15:10 Did you practice that on your way over? Gaten Madarazzo from Stranger Things. Tena, Monsu, Camilla Morone, Carrie Kenny Silver, and more. Listen to these episodes of Dear Chelsea on the Iheart Radio app, Apple Podcast, or wherever you get your podcasts. All right, we are back. Let's dive into some texts here. 760 writes in, hey, how about an episode on?
Starting point is 00:15:44 Springer from SSD and what went wrong with the boys. So I'm not exactly sure. I don't know much about SST. Being from Boston, that's a blind spot for me. I've met Springer once before. He seemed like a good guy. Did seem, you know, eccentric. So I don't know. Maybe I'm into this. Maybe I'll try and do a little research here. Okay, let's see. We got one here from the 718. says, hey, Jake, Sarah from the 713, but her number says 718, maybe that's a typo. I have lots of answers to your questions, but I've never written in until now
Starting point is 00:16:20 because it's that important. Take Chicago seriously, all caps. I love it, thanks to my mama. I got my love of all music from her. Oh, she's talking about Chicago, the group. You and I are close in age and have similar feelings on most music. You just trust me on this, she says. I own an ice cream shop in Houston
Starting point is 00:16:37 called Fat Cat Creamery. please stop by if you're ever in town. Here's a pick of me and Glenn Danzig for good measure. And there's an awesome picture of Sarah here with Glenn. Glenn looks very happy to be in this photograph with Sarah. Says Sarah goes on to say, this is the early 90s. I think I was 14. I also met the dudes from typo negative that night.
Starting point is 00:16:56 Also says, please don't do an episode on Rush. Don't make me sit through that. Love Sarah. You got it, Sarah. No Rush episode, okay? I understand, fully. Great picture of you in Danzig. I appreciate it.
Starting point is 00:17:07 And I will take Chicago. I'm assuming you're talking about Chicago, the band, not the city. Because I do, I do take, I do definitely take the city seriously. All right, this one from the 614, we sent in a video. I can't exactly tell what the hell is going on here. But it says, so 60s Trippia Go-Go, I'm on too hot for TV, two on Springer, if you dare to watch. Ha-ha, Stripper Wars.
Starting point is 00:17:31 I was on, what? Oh, that. All right, not safe for work. Let's keep moving here. Okay, from the 908. Hey, Jake, just checking in from low-cut Connie, Chris from the 908 in New Jersey. All right, Chris, appreciate this, man.
Starting point is 00:17:47 Sends in a little photo here. Recent photo of low-cut Connie live. Let's see, this after-party is being recorded, and it'll be out the day after I do my special guest set with low-cutting in New York at the Blue Note. So, yeah, I hope it went well. I'm sure it did. All right, you got any text you want to send me 617-906-66-66-3-8 on anything
Starting point is 00:18:12 disgraceland related. You can also DM me at Disgraceland Pot. I got a lot of text here. I'm going to keep on rolling with these for a minute here. It says, most overplayed one-and-done LP, obviously, is Boston. Not for me, but it is what it is. I'm not sure where that answer comes from. Another one here, favorite disco song, Shakedown Street by the Grateful Dead.
Starting point is 00:18:33 I can get with that. I can get with that. Uh, next one says is Marshall Crenshaw, Buddy Holly. These are all from the 317. I don't think Marshall Crenshaw is Buddy Holly. I think Buddy Holly is dead. Uh, and then it goes, but did Marshall Crenshaw play Buddy Holly in a movie? Hmm.
Starting point is 00:18:47 I think he might have, actually. Uh, 317 goes on to say, a well, callous fretting hand, middle finger can drive a woman. I don't know what this guy's talking about. 317, check back in with me when you're, when you're off the meds. What else we got here from the 612? Band, big influence versus low. notoriety question mark television who's could do replacements this is j c in the six five one st paul minnesota uh going in deep with the minnesota who's could do sorry yeah minnesota
Starting point is 00:19:18 minneapolis and replacements as well television being from new york though but also great and yes influential i think this is in reference to the velvet underground episode that we did uh can't argue with any of these uh and it goes on to say best song about an actor martin scorzi by king missile I remember that tune. Now I want to go hear it. The 440 writes in, Jake. This is Devin from the 440 living in the 703. I saw Bohemoth opened up for Danzig this week
Starting point is 00:19:42 and thought of Nergoth's struggle with Poland over blasphemy charges. Might be an interesting story. I don't know what you're talking about, but that does sound interesting. And then there's a picture here. It says, here he is before he ripped up a Bible. Come on, man.
Starting point is 00:19:54 Spit blood into the crowd. Uh, yeah. Not my bag, baby. Not my bag. Let's move on. What else we got here? All right, one final. Text here from the 312 writes in, Hey Jake, so I was wondering if you have heard anything about
Starting point is 00:20:07 the pussycat dolls and their founder, Robin Anton. Apparently Robin had been involved in some shady business deals with members along with personal credit card debt, which also happens to be the exact same amount she was suing the lead singer of the group for breach of contract for. I'm fucking obsessed with all of your podcasts and would love to hear that story. Rocka Rola. 312, that's interesting. I have not heard anything about this, but we're on it. I got another one here, Another one on Springer for the 510. Can you do a short episode on Springer, the rise and fall of SSD?
Starting point is 00:20:38 That's interesting, man. That's two on Springer. Hmm. Something tells me you guys are coordinating. All right, I said I wasn't going to do more than one lot. No, I'm not going to do that because that's just too damn self-serving. All right, 617-906-6638. Send me a text.
Starting point is 00:20:53 Leave me a voicemail. I'll take a quick, quick break. I will be back in a flash with the recommendations part. There's two golden rules that any man should live by. Rule one, never mess with a country girl. You play stupid games, you get stupid prizes. And rule two, never mess with her friends either. We always say that trust your girlfriends.
Starting point is 00:21:27 I'm Anna Sinfield. And in this new season of the girlfriends, oh my God, this is the same man. A group of women discover they've all dated the same prolific con artist. I felt like I got hit by it. a truck. I thought, how could this happen to me? The cops didn't seem to care. So they take matters into their own hands. I said, oh, hell no. I vowed. I will be his last target. He's going to get what he deserves. Listen to the girlfriends. Trust me, babe. On the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or
Starting point is 00:22:00 wherever you get your podcast. This season on Dear Chelsea, with me, Chelsea Handler, we have some fantastic guests like Amelia Clark. When, like, young people come off. to me and they want to be an act or whatever. And my first thing is always, can you think of anything else that you can do? Rather be disappointed in. Do that. Dennis Leary. I wake up and I'm hitting him in the head with a water bomb.
Starting point is 00:22:31 And Bruce Jenner is on the aisle in a karate stance. Like he's about to attack me. Like making karate noises. And the entire the Kardashian family over there, everybody's going. And the air marshal is trying to grab my arms and scrape. I immediately know that I've been at sleepwalk. David O'Yellow. I love this podcast, whether it's therapy or relationships or religion or sex or addiction or you just go straight for the guts.
Starting point is 00:22:59 Guy Branham. So anyway, Nicole Kidman broke up with Keith Thurban. Being half of a country couple was always a hat she was going to wear, not like a life she was going to lead. Oh, interesting. I like that. Did you practice that on your way over? Gaten Madarazzo from Stranger Things. Tena Monsu.
Starting point is 00:23:19 Camilla Marone, Carrie Kenny Silver, and more. Listen to these episodes of Dear Chelsea on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. All right, we are back, and this is the recommendations part. The recommendations part,
Starting point is 00:23:42 where we recommend the things that need recommending the recommendations part. I'm going to keep this tight, okay, at the top of this bonus episode, I mentioned a number of artists that we discuss in our Wu-Tang season. So now I'm going to give you specific recommendations for each.
Starting point is 00:23:53 Okay? Number one, the Delphonics. If I'm recommending one song from the Delphonics as a gateway drug, it's, didn't I blow your mind this time. And that's because this song left a singeing mark on my heart after I heard it in Quentin Tarantino. It wasn't even about hearing it. It was about seeing how Quentin Tarantino used this song in Jackie Brown.
Starting point is 00:24:16 Incredible. Number two, the temptations. And now there are so many great iconic. singles and albums to choose from with The Temptations. Also, we have an episode, a disgrace on the Temptations, it's worth checking out. But for me, if I'm going to recommend one thing by the Temptations, it's their 19704A into psychedelia with their album Psychedelic Shack. Weird is fucking worth checking out from this pretty Normie group as they go way off the tracks.
Starting point is 00:24:42 Number three, Big Daddy Kane. Okay, speaking to Normie, Normie choices anyway, ain't no half stepping from 1988's long live the cane. Number four, run DMC. This one's easy. It's the track, the song, Rock Box. It's for you, fresh. What a guitar riff in this song. Eddie Martinez, respect. Number five, heavy D. There's only one recommendation. And it's now that we found love, what are we going to do with it, obviously? Number six, stacks records. Okay, I'm going way off the grid with this one. There are so many great stack singles, great stacks, artists, albums, but if you want something totally weird in mean as fuck check out the
Starting point is 00:25:22 1969 tune Grindr Man by John Lee Hooker on the Stacks release. That's that's right. John Lee Hooker put out a record on stacks and it was called That's Where It's At and this tune Grindr Man from that album it will not disappoint warning though it may propel you into a violent
Starting point is 00:25:38 murderous rage and don't say I didn't warn you. All right, what are you guys listening to? What are you watching? What are you recommending? What do you know about Wu and their influences and what they were listening to that we may not covered in this season yet. Let's talk about their samples. Let's get into it. Let me know, okay? Hit me up on any of these subjects, 617-906-6638. I'm going to take a quick break.
Starting point is 00:26:00 I'm going to drink some tea and I'll be back right after this. All right. Let's recap, shall we? Number one, the first four episodes of our serialized season on Wu-Tang Clan. Episodes on the Rizza, Raqwan, Metham, and Ghostface Killer are in your disgrace land feeds right now. As is an archive episode on Ringo Star and coming tomorrow an archive episode of Badlands on Bruce Lee. Number two, speaking of over in the Badlands feed, we've got a brand new episode on Brandon Lee, yes, Bruce Lee's son. Number three, next week in the disgrace land feed, we're dropping a new episode on Inspect the Deck on Tuesday and Capadonna on Thursday. That's another new episode, two new episodes as we cruise through this Wu-Tang series. Number four, my number is 617-906-66-36-3-8.
Starting point is 00:26:56 Call me on the telephone or go ahead and text me. All right, my moment of bliss, me reading you, the official city directory from Steubenville, Ohio, circa 1911. Starting point is 00:29:33 On the Wicked Words podcast, I talk with the writers who dig deep into the cases that changed history, including Marsha Clark, who went from prosecuting one of the most famous murder cases to writing crime fiction.
