Starting point is 00:00:48 It's called Don't Lie to Me. I'm Lexi Youanu. We're two best friends, 22 years apart, but so close at heart. And I'm Lisa DiGulio, the old one, which means we have wildly different references, occasionally different opinions, and at this point in my 50s, I've lived it all. Now in my 30s, being the founder of new shoes,
Starting point is 00:01:06 good taste is my business. Listen on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get, your podcasts. Hey, Discos. Need a little more disgrace land in your life? Just a touch to get you through. Yeah, me too.
Starting point is 00:01:23 This is the podcast that comes after the podcast. Welcome to Disgraceland, the after party. People actually believe that Courtney Love killed Kurt Cobain, or do they just hate Courtney Love so much that they cannot accept the fact that Kurt killed himself? I've asked this question a couple times before. The first time it came up, of course, was when we released, originally released our Nirvana episodes,
Starting point is 00:02:09 our two-part story. It's basically on Kurt and Courtney. And we had them in the rewind feed this past weekend, and we excerpted parts of that story for some content on Instagram. And the response has been, I mean, I knew the response was going to be, what it was. I didn't know it was going to be as intense as it was. I know that there's a large
Starting point is 00:02:35 group of people out there who believe what they believe about Courtney Love and it's not what I believe, clearly. And I knew that they were going to be upset by the fact that we were pointing out this anecdote from the couple's past where Kurt overdosed. I talked about this last week in the after party. He overdosed and Courtney saved his life. The response is not only in tense, again, this is on social media, it's on Instagram. It's also pretty hysterical. It's very flattering, guys, to think that Courtney Love would pay me to do publicity for her. It's very flattering to think that people believe that I'm an industry plant. It's, but it is kind of ridiculous and fascinating. It's, it's, but it is kind of ridiculous and fascinating.
Starting point is 00:03:28 It's more fascinating to me than it is ridiculous, and it deserves some unpacking. Because, again, I've looked at everything out there, including, of course, soaked in bleach, including the new so-called evidence that has come out over the last 12 to 18 months, whatever it is. And yes, there's a lot of compelling, I don't want to call it evidence. circumstances, compelling circumstance, excuse me, to the death of Kurt. There's a lot you could pull to paint some sort of narrative, some sort of picture here that points fingers at Courtney Love, but there's no actual evidence. And if there were, my God, man, don't you think, don't you think that Courtney Love would be held accountable? Okay, but hold on, let's just go back. I'm more interested
Starting point is 00:04:27 in the why, like where this disdain comes from. Now, on the one hand, I get it. Courtney Love is an outrageous person. She always has been, even in the last two decades of her career here, where she hasn't really been as in the public eye as she was in the 90s and in the early 2000s. She is still outrageous, truly. In the truest sense of that word, she is outweighed. She is outweighed. And the truest sense of that word. She is outrageous. Okay. She says things that are meant to drive you crazy, to get attention. She does truly outrageous things. I know two people personally who went to her house and had the same story. She showed up. She answered the door, not basically, she answered the door naked. Okay. And that's just me. I cannot imagine what it's like for people who actually know Courtney Love.
Starting point is 00:05:21 But I'm guessing that most of the people in the comment section on our Instagram page, Do not know Courtney Love. And I'm also pretty sure that most of the people who are saying these ridiculous things, making these ridiculous comments, aren't disgrace land podcast followers. Some of them are. Most of them are just disgrace land Instagram followers. And there's a difference. A lack of understanding of nuance, I think, is the main difference.
Starting point is 00:05:47 But whatever, that's a different story. My point is, I don't know amongst those of you who are listening now, I don't know how many of you are as convinced that Courtney Love killed Kurt as a large portion of people on the internet are. And that's because I think most of our podcast listeners are, I think you guys are well informed. I think you know how to process information. However, I do understand, because I get the emails, that there's some of you who still think that she did it. and I'm truly interested in hearing from you and hearing, hearing why. But again, that's the point here. Why?
Starting point is 00:06:29 Why do people think this? She, okay, she's outrageous. There's a lot of outrageous rocksters. Does that make them killers? No, it does not. But Courtney loved, she just scratches this particular itch for people that is unique. She's truly hated. And I try to not hate it.
Starting point is 00:06:50 anybody like nobody i just don't i don't believe in hate i don't even like i don't like saying that word i'm trying to get up on a moral high horse here but it's it's it's i try to get it like okay why is this person doing this ridiculous stuff and to me corny love just strikes me as a very cold and calculating um machiavellian type of entertainer of which there are many in history and i know you're hearing these words come out on mouth and you're on dude listen to what you're saying these are the exact of a killer. Well, it takes a lot to kill somebody and get away with it. A real lot, especially in the public eye, especially when you're someone like Courtney Love. Especially with Kurt Cobain is one of the biggest rock stars in the history of rock and roll,
Starting point is 00:07:32 in the history of pop, in the history of entertainment. So it just doesn't stand. It just does not pass the smell test. None of the evidence. And I wish I woke up this morning and had the time to go through all the evidence again and come here. And, you know, maybe that's what I should do. I should actually, I've been planning on doing this Courtney Love, Courtney Love episode for some time and I'm waiting for this documentary to come out so that I have more information, more of the story, because I know there's going to be real revelatory stuff in that film. And it was supposed to be out by now. It's not. So I keep punting this episode down, down the line.
Starting point is 00:08:17 But maybe what I should do instead, maybe what the audience is telling me here, is I should actually litigate the facts in an episode. And in a really open-minded way, in a way that not necessarily to prove my point, but to unpack my point and pressure test my point. Because I'm truly, I'm truly, my jaws on the floor,
Starting point is 00:08:45 this reaction. I don't mean to laugh, but it is kind of funny when you read these comments. Now, of all the rock stars throughout history, Courtney Love is singular. But if I had to choose one rock star to compare her to and it has nothing to do with her relationship with Kirk Cobain and has nothing to do with the death of Kurt Cobain
Starting point is 00:09:12 and how he died, if I had one rock star to compare Courtney Love to, it would be Sid Vicious. Courtney Love is a better musician, she's a better songwriter, of course. But as far as being an entertainer, being a rock star, behaving like a rock star, Sid is the best common because Sid was completely outrageous as well
Starting point is 00:09:37 and said things just to get a rise out of people and just to get attention and all those sort of things that Courtney, I believe Courtney learned them from Sid Vicious, from watching Sid Vicious. And there's some irony here, too, because Courtney Love is in Sid and Nancy. But you don't get, it's interesting because Sid is caught up in this murder mystery as well with Nancy, but you do not get this hatred for Sid that you get for Courtney Love. And I want to know why.
Starting point is 00:10:09 I mean, he did truly outrageous. The guy wore a swastika for the entirety of his career, okay? I mean, I get the context, okay? So, you know, OG punk rockers don't come at me for being critical of that. I'm just pointing it out. There's a lot. My point is that there's a lot there with Sid that you could actually drive you fucking crazy and cause you to be super critical of the guy and perhaps come up with,
Starting point is 00:10:35 I don't know, wild conspiracy theories or not even. I mean, the stuff with Nancy, it's a stone cold who done it with Nancy, I think. And we're going to get into that later as well. Of course, we touched on Sid and Nancy before. but you know if you talk to old school new york punk rockers and hardcore kids they all have a very clear idea of who killed nancy and um i'm interested in unpacking that but i'm i'm getting off topic why don't people hate sid vicious the way that they hate Courtney love what is it i mean there isn't there is it
Starting point is 00:11:16 Misogyny? Is it because he's a man? He's not a woman? I don't think so. I don't think those of you who listen to this podcast and our disgrace land listeners are convinced that Courtney Love kill Kirk Cobain. I don't think you're misogynist. Now, could a large portion of the people in the disgrace land comments on Instagram? Could that be at the core of their belief? Perhaps. I don't know. I haven't really dug into it. Maybe I will. There's just something about her. Or maybe there's not. Maybe I'm looking at it the wrong way. Maybe it's because there's something about Kurt. Kirk Cobain is a lot different than Nancy Spongeon. Kirk Cobain, at least from our generation for Gen X, there was nobody more important. There was nobody bigger. There was nobody who reached as many people. There was nobody
Starting point is 00:12:10 who had the cultural impact in music. He was our John Lennon, our Bob Dylan. He was all of it rolled into one. And I do think there's something psychologically with music fans where they cannot let go. I see this with Michael Jackson fans. I see this with Elvis Presley fans. And I see it with Kurt Cobain fans.
Starting point is 00:12:34 It's a little different than it is with, I don't know, like, you know, Lane Staley fans or Pickett, Tom Petty. You know what I mean? Not that those guys weren't great. They were. They were truly incredible. But they weren't
Starting point is 00:12:51 Kirk Cobain, Michael Jackson level. You know what I'm saying? And maybe that has something to do with it. Maybe in the absence of actually dealing with our sort of icon grief, we cannot accept the fact that the answer is,
Starting point is 00:13:10 the answer. We don't want to accept it because then it, it prompts another level of letting go. And if we can hang on to, I don't want to call it a conspiracy, but if we can hang on to these, I guess it is a conspiracy, we can hang on to these alternate theories, whatever we want to call them about their deaths, we can keep their stories alive. And we can, the myth certainly grows. and maybe that's on some sort of subconscious psychological level what's happening here. Or maybe people just think Courtney Love is a fucking crazy person and contains a capacity to do something like murder her husband and get away with it for all these years publicly, which I have a lot of respect for Courtney Love that might shock a lot of you.
Starting point is 00:13:59 But I don't have that level of respect for her cunningness to think that she could pull that off. But again, I'm going to look into it more fully. I'm going to respect the people who are showing me no respect in the comments. And I'm going to dig into this and see if I have some sort of artist bias, historical bias, whatever type of bias, and see if I'm wrong here. See if, I'm going to look at this information again. I've looked at it. Like I said, Matt really looked at it. He really went at that dossier of info. came out about 18 months ago. And we had a big, big talk about it.
Starting point is 00:14:39 I'm going to even watch fucking soaked in bleach again and that knucklehead from the mentors and that whole theory. And I'm going to entertain, I guess, all the stuff about her dad, even though just because you were associated with the Grateful Dead does not make you a member of the CIA. I'm going to look into all of this, I think. But most important, I want to hear from you guys. I want to hear from you listeners. who don't normally engage and who think that Courtney killed Kurt.
Starting point is 00:15:11 And I want to know why. And there's no stupid answer here. Okay? There are no stupid questions. There are no stupid answers. I really want to understand this because it's some sort of phenomenon that's unique to rock and roll history. And it's fascinating to me. I thought I was done with it.
Starting point is 00:15:25 I'm not. So there's that. If you're down on Instagram and you're not following Disgraceland at Disgraceland pod, you want to see what I'm talking about. there's two, maybe four posts about Kurt and Courtney over the last week. And there's one carousel post, which is this post, it's like a series of images. And it's a little story that we tell along with the images, pictures and quotes. And that's the one that really, really got people going.
Starting point is 00:15:54 Check that out. Let me know what you think. And email me at Disgraceland Pod. And I want to get into these theories. I want to get into your thoughts. and I want them to inform the episode that I'll probably start to put together within the next sort of four to six weeks, I'm guessing. And it'll be a straight up who done it. Obviously, we covered a lot of ground in the Nirvana story thus far.
Starting point is 00:16:16 I'm not going to retread that. I'm just going to get into the actual death and the theory that Courtney killed Kurt. Now, as outrageous as this theory is, there are more outrageous theories from Rocket, role history, truly weird, unhinged, completely ludicrous ideas about rock stars. I've had my fun with some of these theories before in the past. The idea that John Denver was one of Vietnam's most prolific American assassins, the idea that Jim Morrison is the Zodiac killer. I kind of made that up. There's some other ones. The notion, some people think Stevie Wonder can see. Some of it. Some of it. Some
Starting point is 00:17:00 people think that Jay-Z is a vampire. We're going to get into some of the more outrageous rock star conspiracy theories and have some fun with this in the exclusive section of this episode. Go to disgraceympod.com to sign up, become an all-access member. Unlock exclusive content just like this, plus ad-free listening. Zeth and I will be in there momentarily, and we will be giving you all this insanity and more. All right, so talking Kurt and Courtney because they're in the rewind feed. last week. And then we released our new episode on Screaming Jay Hawkins this past Tuesday. Coming up after this after party, guys, we've got a rewind episode on Eminem. That's going to,
Starting point is 00:17:43 now that I think about it, that's going to cause some problems as well. But Screamin Jay Hawkins fathered 57 children. Did you guys know this? It's large, it's part of rock and roll mythology for sure, and it's something that came out, I don't know, decade or two ago. It always fascinated me, 57 children. When Jay Hawkins died, it was revealed that those children were out there, and most of them were illegitimate and unknown to him. A friend of his asked Screamin' Jay, if he ever sent his children money, and Scream and Jay responded, well, that's the mother's problem.
Starting point is 00:18:22 Solid dude that he is. Screaming Jay Hawkins is one of these guys who bounce between record labels. as much as he bounced between wives and girlfriends and one-night stands. And when he was on his deathbed, he supposedly asked a new friend of his, an investment banker, to track down all 57 of his children. So the banker set up a website called jayskids.com and received upwards of 2,500 submissions from people claiming to be screaming Jay Hawkins's progeny. So approximately one year after,
Starting point is 00:18:57 Screaming J's death, a total of 36 legitimate children had been identified. But not one of them went to his funeral. Now, to his three legitimate children that he knew of, the children that he had with his first wife, Anna Mae, Screaminjahawkins, left $1 each. This is fucking crazy. I don't understand the $1 thing. I really don't. Like, why leave them? anything, you know? Is it just a diss? Is it a way of being cute? Or was it legitimately like
Starting point is 00:19:35 a heartfelt, I got nothing and I want to show them I care? It's really fascinating to me. Screamy J. Hawkins is completely fascinating to me. You can hear all about them in the new episode, if you haven't already perfectly timed for the spooky Halloween season that we have just entered. As is the M&M episode. Now Elvis Presley died on the toilet. Eminem launched his career on the toilet gross i know grosser than the constipation blue song we were talking about last week but it is true it was christmas it was also m&m's daughter's birthday and m was broken back in his mom's trailer and he was constipated and on the toilet and he took notice of how skinny he was and inspiration struck skinny slim slim slim shady slim he grabbed a nearby pen and notebook and the lines just
Starting point is 00:20:22 flowed out of him page after page of words it became the song that would help m&m break through and launch his career. More than that, the slim, shady alter ego concept that M conceived on the can gave M&M the creative shield that he needed to explore incredibly dark themes in his rap, themes that attracted millions of listeners and led to his 1999 Slim Shady album going quadruple platinum. And it all started, well, now you know where it started, more on Eminem in this upcoming archive episode of the disgrace Sam podcast. That's hidden this weekend in the feed. After that on Tuesday, our new episode on As I Lay Dying, and we're asking the question, is the Christian music scene full of phony faith leaders?
Starting point is 00:21:09 Now, Tim Lambisa, singer for the Christian metalcore band, As I Lay Dying, the front man. This is a band, guys, that would regularly pray with their fans after shows. Okay? Now, he, this front man, Tim Lambess, of As I Lay Dying, admitted to being an atheist, and he claimed that the majority of Christian metal bands that he toured with were not actually. Christian. What he said was that only one in 10 of the bands in the scene were actually sincere about their faith and that the rest were fake Christians. Now, Tim Lambises' band As I Lay Dying, they weren't some fringe act. They were nominated for a Grammy. They released an album
Starting point is 00:21:45 that charted in the top 10. And all of that was because of their devoted fans, Christian fans, who believed in the band's faith-based message. But the story of Tim Lambises and As I Lay Dying, It's not just about Christianity and whether or not people are charlatans. It's about murder because in 2013, Lambesis was arrested after paying an undercover cop disguised as a hitman to kill his wife. Obviously not a very Christian thing to do. We get into the story of Tim Lambesis and As I Lay Dying in the whole Christian metal scene in the new episode of Disgraceland.
Starting point is 00:22:19 So do not miss that. That's coming on Tuesday. And when you're listening to this As I Lay Dying episode, what I want to know from you guys, what music do you listen to that compels you to think about faith? I don't mean something that's converted you to a relief. That's not what I'm saying. I personally believe that the mystery of faith
Starting point is 00:22:39 is something to be contemplated, it's something to be confronted, okay? And a lot of music has done that for me. I think about Dylan's Christian album, Slow Train of Coming. For some reason, I think of Moby's play. That record always kind of makes me think about, about my faith and think about faith in general, I should say. I think about gospel bluegrass music.
Starting point is 00:23:02 I tend to listen to that a lot on Sunday mornings. Okay. And it's all for this reason. It's kind of propelling me in this direction to think about faith. So what music does that for you? Is it as I lay dying? I don't think so. It's not for me anyways. But, you know, what music do you listen to that has pushed you to confront faith to think about faith? And it's a little heavy, but I don't care. 617-906-66-3-8 voicemail and text. Get at me. Starting point is 00:25:21 Lisa? We should tell them about our new show. show. Oh my god, Lexi. We have a new podcast. It's called Don't Lie to Me. I'm Lexi Yuwanu. We're two best friends, 22 years apart, but so close at heart. And I'm Lisa Di Giulio, the old one, which means we have wildly different references, occasionally different opinions, and at this point in my 50s, I've lived it all. I'm not going to get any of you are fighting. That is wild. I learned that about you today. Now in my 30s, being the founder of new shoes, Good taste is my business, and I've always got something to say. If men were just honest about this, they would be so much more peace in the world.
Starting point is 00:26:01 We're going to talk about dating, relationships, beauty, getting older, and a little wiser. We're best friends, but we don't always agree. Because you told us how accommodating you are. Obviously, I would do what I think I could do to fight the fight, but there's only so much fight I can fight. Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me. Liar. Listen on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast.
Starting point is 00:26:28 I don't really care. All right, guys, welcome back. Let's get straight into your calls. 617-90666-6-6-3-8 voicemail and text. This one comes from the 903 on the subject of Screaming Jay Hawkins. Hey, Jake. Adam, from Texas now in Maryland. Screamin' Jay Hawkins.
Starting point is 00:26:56 I can't help, but remember you said that he was addicted to Cody. at one point. I could block his bells too. So, obviously, you died of the block bowel. I would guess decoding addiction had something to do with it more than anything. But as you said, we don't know because you were everybody looking at a different story.
Starting point is 00:27:13 So us and our, you know, current factory thing, what we feel might be right. Must be right, of course. Isn't that the way things go to do these days? Just my only thought on that was like, great episode otherwise. Just insane on the 54. kids and I don't even know what to say about that. Anyway, love the episode. Love the show. Rock and Rolla.
Starting point is 00:27:38 Out. Adam, thanks for the call, my man. Appreciate you. Fifty-four kids, 56 kids, 57 kids, 36 kids, whatever it was. It was a lot of kids. Just just crazy. And I feel for those kids who, hopefully some of them found a dad elsewhere somehow. Yeah, the coating, intestinal blockage as well. A lot of intestinal blockage talk over the these weeks in this grace land. Who knows? Who knows how Jay died? Wouldn't it be ironic if one of his kids did him in?
Starting point is 00:28:09 Let's go to Kelly in the 781. Hey, Jay. This is Kelly from the 781. I have not called in a while. I'm sorry. I was just listening to the Kirkland and Colony Love episodes again. And I'm just calling about your question. Hey, Coenney Love Hill, Kirk Cobain.
Starting point is 00:28:28 And I think absolutely no. And I am down for conspiracies. I think that, as they say on another podcast, I listen to, the difference between the conspiracy and the truth is six months. And really, that's how it's been lately with all the craziness. But, no, I have never thought that she killed him. I always thought that was ludicrous. Why would she kill him, number one?
Starting point is 00:28:51 What did she gain from that? I mean, she had her own money. She had, whatever. She loved him. She did not kill him. I think that's ridiculous. Macarola. Kelly, the voice of reason.
Starting point is 00:29:03 Appreciate you calling in. I'm with you. I do not think Courtney Love, obviously, we talked about this earlier. I'm going to get into the specifics, though, and I'm going to unpack this for the people who do think so. 617-9066638 voicemail and text. We can keep talking about Courtney Love.
Starting point is 00:29:18 We can talk about J. Hawkins. We can talk about anything you want to talk about. 302 writes in, and 302 is very angry. Says, Jake, my friend, if your question of the week is an R-U-1-0. of Scream and Chase Kids, then we as a disgrace land society don't deserve shit. I don't quite understand what that means 302, but a lot of passion there. Are you one of screaming chase kids? 617-90666-638 voicemail on text. Get back and let me know. 405 writes in, after a long
Starting point is 00:29:49 hiatus that life often imposes on us all, I have had a lot of catching up to do. And while I'm late to the game, I had an existential experience in listening to your piece on Patty Smith. I listen to a lot of podcasts and you always bring your A game, but your work on Patty Smith took me to a place in my mind in the universe that is only reserved when that rare moment of clarity hits. You recently spoke of the new mediums for good writers. And your episode on Patty Smith is up there with the great pieces. Wow. Thank you. In modern, that's me saying thank you. It goes on to say is up there with the great pieces in modern pop culture literature in the New Yorker Rolling Stone and those other magazine rack grabs that molded the youth of the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. Don't stop writing. Rockerola,
Starting point is 00:30:33 The Notorious RDG from the 405, notorious RDG. Thank you so much. Really cool of you to say. I appreciate that. Yeah, that episode was nominated for a Signal Award. If you guys want, disgrace, to win as I do, because like, I said, once you get nominated for an award, it's a double-edged sword. You don't want to lose. I hate fucking losing. I don't like the concept of, oh, it's just nice to be considered. And fuck that. I want to win. So help me win. Help us win. Go to the website, signalaward.com. You can big button right there. Starting point is 00:31:22 amazing work you guys do on the music for disgrace land. And I like that you're being acknowledged here as well as my writing. And thanks for the kind words. I really appreciate it, RDG. That is, uh, you know, I'm humbled. I truly am. Helltown Mark from the 978 writes, and hey, didn't really expect to be adding a blue song about constipation today. But here we are. And there's a screenshot of Helltown Mark's phone where he's selecting, uh, constipation blues and adding it to the disgrace land songs playlist. Mark, do me a favor and call in and leave us a voicemail. You're great on the text, but I want a voicemail, and I want you to explain to the people what this is so that I can explain it more fully. I'm getting hit
Starting point is 00:32:08 up on Instagram. People are asking about this playlist, and I want to let them know exactly what it is and where they can find it. This is an ongoing thing. I get at least one message per week. So call back. 617-90666-66-3-8 voicemail and text. 416 writes in on our Quincy Jones episode. Hey, great Q episode. I really identified with what you said at the beginning of the after-party episode all through our high school. I was told you're going to become a writer. You're going to write stuff. What did I do? I became a clinical psychologist, researcher, and professor. Turns out I write for a living. It started with the BA, the MA, the PhD dissertation. When people say, oh, you're a psychologist, what do you do? I reply paperwork. I see my job is trying to tell the client's story through these very long reports, but I tell them that my job is not to get it right. My job is to get it right for them. Now, of course, people tell me I should have a podcast because I love telling stories. This is the way of the world now. This is how you get your stories
Starting point is 00:33:06 out. This is how you speak your truth about life, rock a roller. Well, Jason in the 4016, is a very interesting text. You sound highly educated. And I'm glad that, uh, you're getting your money's worth and that you finally became a writer in a roundabout way, just like I did. It's crazy how these things happen. All right, 617-906-66-6638 voicemail and text. Get at me. Leave a voicemail. Send a text. Recommend some episodes. Give me your answers to the question of the week. What music inspires you to confront or contemplate your faith? I know it's heavy, but who gives a shit? Let's get into it. We know we try. other. We've known each other for a while. Wisecrack is the podcast of the year, last year. Very big show. Again, Five Night Cruise begins March 20th, 2007, there'll be all kinds of stuff going on besides the show. I'm going to be hanging out. Zeth's going to be hanging out. It's going to be all kinds of true crime themed happenings on board,
Starting point is 00:35:56 podcast recordings, behind the scenes, meetings, meet and greets, all that stuff. Starting point is 00:37:44 We're two best friends. 22 years apart, but so close at heart. And I'm Lisa Di Giulio, the old one, which means we have wildly different references, occasionally different opinions, and at this point in my 50s, I've lived it all. I'm not going to get anyone fighting. That is wild.
Starting point is 00:38:02 I learned that about you today. Now in my 30s, being the founder of new shoes, good taste is my business, and I've always got something to say. If men were just honest about this, There would be so much more peace in the world. We're going to talk about dating, relationships, beauty, getting older, and a little wiser. We're best friends, but we don't always agree.
Starting point is 00:38:23 Because you told us how accommodating you are. Obviously, I would do what I think I could do to fight the fight, but there's only so much fight I can fight. Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me. Don't lie to me. Liar. Listen on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:38:43 I don't really care. Welcome aboard season six of The Girlfriends, Flight or Fight, which takes place 30,000 feet in the sky. There's great food, comfortable chairs, and attentive stewardesses. The stewardesses were so beautiful. But in reality, the stewardess job is far less glamorous than it appears. It was the most sexist job I think you could have. In this era, the airlines told these stewardesses
Starting point is 00:39:18 they have to be single. They had no good excuse for why they wouldn't let women be married. They have to be skinny. We were starving ourselves. And they have to be young. You would retire at age 32. But one day, a group of stewardesses said, This has got to stop.
Starting point is 00:39:39 They risked it all, turning a fight for fairness into a revolution. Listen to The Girlfriends, Flight or Fight, on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. All right, guys, disgracelandpod at gmail.com. Hit me with your emails. This one comes from Neil Gillis. Neil Gillis, the subject is ranking dread episode. Suggestion. Ranking Dread. Story has everything. Sound system, clashes, political riots, fleeing multiple countries, bringing the yards from Jamaica to the UK. Canada and U.S. And he made great music. Tell me Fatty Boom Boom is not great music.
Starting point is 00:40:28 Rocka Rola. Ranking Dread, Neil, I am embarrassed to say. I don't know what the hell you're talking about, but the passion in this email is such that I'm going to note it. And I'm going to put this on the list. This is something that sounds like it would allow us. I need a way into Jamaican music that is not Bob Marley or Peter Tosh. And this sounds like it might be it.
Starting point is 00:40:52 and I'm very interested. Robbie Thring writes and, hey, Jake, it's your neighbor in the upstairs apartment. Have you, what the fuck you're talking about? Robbie goes on to say, have you watched last stop yet? And no, it's not a Western or an old TMC classic. Think more along the lines of Tarantino. Just watch it. I guarantee you'll like it.
Starting point is 00:41:13 If you don't, I'll buy you a pint of moose head next time you're in Toronto. Also, oh, I get upstairs apartment. Now I get it. He's in Canada. Robbie, I like how he did that. I like how he did that and you didn't explain it. Robbie goes on to say, also another point I just discovered this band, the Silver Apples from 1968.
Starting point is 00:41:28 They sound like nothing from that era. They were so far ahead of their time. It's incredible. They were a synth rock band before there was synth. Anyhow, check them out after you've watched the last stop. Cheers from the 519, Waterloo Canada. Love these recommendations. You guys are killing it this week.
Starting point is 00:41:42 Robbie, great job. Silver apples, I've heard of them. Never checked them out, but I'm excited to check them out and do that today, actually. 1968, huh? Synth before there was synth and the last stop. You didn't give you much to go on here. But I don't know.
Starting point is 00:41:59 There's something about the way you wrote this that I feel like you're a guy I need to pay attention to, Robbie. So I'm going to check out the last stop, all right? At least I'm going to talk to Zeth about it. See if he's got to take. And then I'll dive in, maybe, perhaps, I think. Let's see.
Starting point is 00:42:16 In any event, I really appreciate the message. Disgrace-Land Pod at Gene. Email.com. You guys want to hit us up about anything over email. That's the way to do it. Heather the Yinzer on Patreon writes, hey, what happened to the old rock stars with no fucks to give content? Well, I don't really know. I'm reading this comment out of context, so it's hard for me to tell Heather, but I'm going to look into that. Pete on Patreon writes, Feast of the Mau Mau makes I put a spell on you sound like a Celine Dion jam. Feast of the Ma'amau is a screaming Jay Hawkins song, for those of you who are interested. Thank you, Pete.
Starting point is 00:42:50 Tim on Patreon, writes in, hey, is it me? Or does this episode just sound different? More natural, less base or decibels or something. Sounds good, just different. I don't know. Tim, maybe two settings. Or maybe Matt did something different. Matt, did you do something different?
