Starting point is 00:00:49 to make sure I talk beforehand because right when he gets going, I want to let the song play out and when he gets my dance on. But before we do, do, do, do. I want to give a shout out, shout out, shout out for my boy. Steve, what up, Steve? You know, you don't have to add the echo, echo, echo, echo. Every single time you speak with the reverb, reaper. But it's only right if we do because it's 80s month. And we are the DJs that like to spin it, mix it, throw it,
Starting point is 00:01:25 And dissected. Yeah, that's enough the reverb. You don't want to think it's played out. It was a good effort, though. It was good effort. It was a lot. And we did play it out, actually. But, you know, we got out just in time.
Starting point is 00:01:38 To save ourselves and say, what's going on, everybody. It's time to continue 80s month with one of our favorites. And got to be honest, Kassel and I both loved this group, and we're probably already going to give it a five slap. Because, again, one of our top artists. And there's two of them, Daryl Hall and John Oates singing Man Eater. And just from the beginning castle, that beat. I mean...
Starting point is 00:02:02 Oh, it comes in hot. It's hot, but it's soft. Yeah. It's fast, but it's slow. It feels like something big is about to go down. And you feel like, I honestly, we're watching the music video, and it's got, like, the woman's footsteps coming down. And you're just like, they don't show the woman, but you feel the footsteps, like kind of slowly walking down. And you're like, oh, shit, something dangerous, but something sexy is coming this way.
Starting point is 00:02:23 Makes me feel like I'm getting up to go to sleep. It makes me feel like I'm... What? You know what I'm saying? No. It's a lot of... It's up and down. It's just got this very...
Starting point is 00:02:32 Oh, it's upbeat. It's upbeat, but I'm also... But I'm also ready to take a nap. It makes me do that little two-step. You know, it's also... It makes me do this thing. I feel like everybody wants to do that. A little Carlton thing.
Starting point is 00:02:42 But not too much. It's also kind of calm. Yeah, but not like, yeah, not aggressive. You can't... That's good point. You know, it's like... It's smooth. It's got a cup of coffee, but it's iced.
Starting point is 00:02:51 You know what I mean? It's just a little bit of like delicious cream in there. Yeah, maybe and half oat milk with a little bit of two sugars. And you get the point. We should wait longer for Justin to figure out what he wants in his coffee, you know. I feel like we're all just the people in the line of Starbucks. It's like, yep, okay. What does Venti mean?
Starting point is 00:03:16 20. Did I say that right? 20. Okay. All right. Yeah. You guys have any seasonal specials? Yeah.
Starting point is 00:03:24 But anyway, back to this. Back to our fucking man eater. Love hollow notes and love this song. There's also like a live animal in the studio in this one that's just kind of walking through. So we might be dealing with a literal man eater. That's where the dissection comes because we are... We will find out. The dissect DJ's DJ Castle and DJ Jagged.
Starting point is 00:03:46 Bagger did it again. Let's get it. All right, let me go back to the song because it was just about to get started and I wanted to make sure I had. heard that, you know, I want to let Hall do his thing. So let's go. Let me hear you say. I'm going to ride at the night-d-shape castle. I am dancing my ass off across and you know,
Starting point is 00:05:30 and I know you know because you were looking at me. Yeah, but I was dancing too, so I didn't even. I was kind of just working like some light shoulder action, but. And we know you guys were too. It makes you move. We know you guys were too. It makes you jiggle, makes you move. It makes you cut.
Starting point is 00:05:43 It makes you slew. What is he talking about? Do you got the lyrics? Because I didn't do them this time. I got them. Let's go and get it. So Darry Hall brings it in. Darrell Hall, one of the just most fantastic 80s voices.
Starting point is 00:05:55 Like, his voice sounds like the genre that you're listening to. And also, got to give a quick shout out to Charles DeChant, the unsung hero of Hollow Notes, because his name is not in the title. But that's the saxophone artist who you hear just slaying that. I love a good saxophone. I was ready to fall asleep because of it, but in a good way. Like, it gave that. A vibe while you're sleeping.
Starting point is 00:06:20 Like, just kind of like your, yeah. But like, yeah, you get it. You get what I'm saying. Oh, yeah, I know how it works. All right, what are they talking about? She'll only come out at night, the lean and hungry type. Nothing is new. I've seen it before.
Starting point is 00:06:35 Watching and waiting. So obviously this is about some female that just kind of prowls the nightlife, you know. And her presence is known and felt. And people are like, oh, shit, there she is. I agree. Boom, we all know the type. Oh, she's sick. sitting with you, but her eyes are on the door.
Starting point is 00:06:53 She's waiting for the next guy to come through. She's like, are you the best thing that's going to be around her? I feel like, yeah. Like, I'm feeling your presence right now, but I feel like something better might be coming along. Definitely sounds like a relationship I was in, for sure. I've been in one of these. So many have paid to see what you think you're getting for free.
Starting point is 00:07:11 All right, let's unpack that one for a second. I mean, like, she's, is she a call girl or something? Yeah, I think we're going back to the, I think the managers are, I mean, so far, So she sounds like a lady that works the night for sure. Interesting. I never heard of that way before. But, all right. But then why is she just eyes on the door then, if that's the case?
Starting point is 00:07:32 She's looking for the next customer. Okay. The woman is wild. A she cat tamed by the pur of a jaguar. Money's the matter. You're in it for love. You ain't going to get too far. So...
Starting point is 00:07:46 Exactly what we're talking about. This girl's just out for the buck. The almighty dollar. And if you try to love her, you're messing up. She's going to eat you up. And then that's where he comes with and with a, Here she comes. Watch out, boy, she'll chew you up.
Starting point is 00:08:02 Oh, here she comes. She's a man eater. Watch out, boy, she'll chew you up. Oh, here she comes. All right, you're actually headed. Yeah, that's good. Did you want to say something? No, no, no.
Starting point is 00:08:24 I thought you went too far, but. So let's just recap. Really quickly, we have found out that this is very simply a woman that prowls the night looking for money to work the street. And if you try to fall in love with her, she's a manatee. She will chew you up. She would chew you up. Is that what you're getting from this song? Yeah, definitely.
Starting point is 00:08:49 You know, did you ever know that about this song before we listen to it right now? No, I actually asked you what is a mannedator all about and what was your response. Well, I originally said that it's possibly Like a hamburger eater But like for male You're trying to go PCM you know? For like bull Like she only eats bull meat
Starting point is 00:09:07 Yeah And then it's a male Wouldn't be bull So you're thinking this is like What if she's like a cannibal? That's what I'm saying But she only eats males Like male men
Starting point is 00:09:18 Male like bulls Or male chickens Like she only eats the cocks There you go That's closer to what you said earlier You're not let me go down the road now You were so cocky about it when you said it earlier Like oh that's for sure what it is
Starting point is 00:09:34 Yeah But she's a man-eater of some sort for sure Yeah she is She's manned She's manned Jagg It's official Got to the bottom of it
Starting point is 00:11:20 I didn't hear or pay attention To any of the last lyrics Can you Enlighten dissect them for me because I was just watching the video and enjoying the sax player. He is awesome. The random Jaguar that pops in the back randomly through the video. Yeah, because that's symbolizing the man-eater.
Starting point is 00:11:37 And I'm guessing John Oates is the guitar player that knows how to rip it. Yeah. So I was just watching all that. And watch the video guys. Actually don't. It's a pointless video. You don't need to watch it. But the Jaguar is cool.
Starting point is 00:11:47 Shout out to John Oates for getting his name in the band because I feel like. I feel like Daryl was the... Darryl is the man who really... The big D.H. Yeah. Was the hitter on this. Yeah, he's the slugger that really brings this shit home. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:12:02 Nice back-to-back pun there. It was good. That's what we do here, guys. We're getting better at this. Episode 91, we're finally feeding us. I was way past episode 91. 97, whatever. Whatever it is.
Starting point is 00:12:15 All right. Last lyrics. I did want to point out, okay, so the video is actually classic. You got to check it out. Just because, so this song was released, October 31st, 19, The Halloween release, which, you know, maybe it's got some... I'll bet you they were going nuts. The Halloween when this shit first came out.
Starting point is 00:12:33 Like, they were probably getting after. You always keep thinking, like, when it came out on Halloween, they just blasted. No, man, it took two months, three months. It didn't come out to 1983 when everybody started getting it. That's probably true. But... I could look it up.
Starting point is 00:12:44 One at the top of the charts. I don't feel like doing that right now. Yeah, I could. It feels like a whole... You look it up. But the point is, we've been talking all throughout 80s month about music videos and kind of the impact of you know we kicked it off with video killed the radio
Starting point is 00:12:59 star and how much music videos had an influence on the music scene and kind of how that really progressed throughout the 80s this one is a real smoothly dumb because it's really just the same shots of them all performing their instruments but they work
Starting point is 00:13:15 with lighting so well on the zoom ins and the close-ups and they do some effects where they got like the Jaguars eyes and then it goes on the tight shots of the different members of the band and everything. It's really edited well, considering we're just dealing with shots of the band playing and everything, but it really fits the vibe of both.
Starting point is 00:13:34 The song, the theme of it, and just the 80s in general. Like, you know you're watching something that's core 80s, and Terrell Hall ends up looking like a G again, you know? December 18th. It's not just an awesome voice. What? December 18th is when it hit the number one spot. So that didn't even take two months.
Starting point is 00:13:54 So six weeks later. Yeah, stuff happened quick back then because once I hit the radio. Not that quick, but still six weeks. You're trying to say like Halloween, they were like, oh, I don't know. Somebody heard it that Halloween. Probably by Thanksgiving. Probably by Thanksgiving. But somebody had heard their hands out of that.
Starting point is 00:14:07 Nobody heard of Halloween. Nobody heard of Halloween. There's no way of proving this. If it was released, I assume that means that's when it first got on the radio. And somebody was like, oh, man, this one is going to blast off my Halloween party. Nobody has heard this track before. Man Eater, it's got some good Halloween vibe. Maybe somebody's dressed like a jaguar.
Starting point is 00:14:24 About the last lyrics, though? No, I was about to get to that. Oh, yeah, let's do that. Hey, I was talking about the video. Video's a key integral moment in 80s history, and it deserves mention. So are Jaguars. Absolutely.
Starting point is 00:14:36 What a cool animal. Just, like, take five seconds to respect Jaguars, and, like, there's a reason they mean the entire NFL club off it. The name is fantastic. Great name, great name for a car. You just know you're dealing with something vicious. Great name for a DJ.
Starting point is 00:14:51 It would likely be. I like the DJ aspect of it. well. Is that why you have Jaguars all over your house? Great animal. All right. What's the lyrics saying? That's a cool logo.
Starting point is 00:15:02 I wouldn't, if I were you, I know what she can do. Sounds like Hall is speaking from experience here. He's definitely been had by this man-eater before. And he's like coming at it. I almost feel like he's coming at it. I was like, he's jealous with it. I was about to say he's trying to pretend like he's warning a guy. But he's like, at the same time, he's like,
Starting point is 00:15:21 damn it, you're about to hit that. That's mine. It's going to cost you a lot But that's almost guarantee what it is Are you agreeing that that's probably what it is? Like that's almost guaranteed I would say 90 to 10% Yeah
Starting point is 00:15:33 Because he just wants to be back at the point Where that guy's at now Where it's like she's got her eyes on you Instead he's singing a song She's gonna chew you up But she's You're gonna enjoy the chewing Let me just say that
Starting point is 00:15:43 She's telling the boy Watch up boys, she'll chew Yeah he's definitely just trying to like forewarn somebody And put on the roadblocks But really he's just trying to He just really wants to drop the roadblocks In this way
Starting point is 00:15:53 I don't know if I would do it. I know where this is going. Yeah, all right. Keep it going, because we're going to see if this true. Brings true. She's deadly, man. She could really rip your world apart.
Starting point is 00:16:02 Mind over matter. Oh, the beauty is there, but a beast is in the heart. He's definitely exactly what you described, Gassel. He would go through the whole process again. He loves this woman. She tore me apart. This song is legitimately him trying to tell another guy, don't go after it because she's going to,
Starting point is 00:16:24 tear you up it's a bad deal when really in all actuality he's doing exactly if she turned for him for a second oh he'd be all about it you want me to chew you up again he's like check please he'd start singing whatever he'd start singing private eyes or some shit like that like that have it eyes they're watching you right he would definitely start singing that's play that shit real quick all right i feel like one day we got to actually dissect this song on its own because it is as much as me and jag love Man-Eater. I think our true favorite HoloNotes jam is this guy right here. I'm gonna call you on some shit right now.
Starting point is 00:17:22 I missed a clap. Yes, you did. No, no, no, you did two claps both time. I know. I thought the first thing. And not only have I, ever since you taught me this years ago, done it myself, it's one clap, two claps. I've always instructed anybody else that is a fan of Holo Notes and private eyes. We've also been hanging out and I wasn't prepared. Yeah, we weren't ready to tackle practice.
Starting point is 00:17:44 I wasn't either. Jagged just dropped that on me. I think down the road one day, we'll do that a whole dissection on that because it deserves it. But that's definitely what he would sing to the girl if she gave him any time of day. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:56 The man eater that he says, right? Mm-hmm. Yeah. But instead, he'd be ready to get chewed up immediately. Instead, he can't go for that. Oh. Huh? I can't.
Starting point is 00:18:07 That's right. I don't have any more puns or ways of flipping it. You don't need to get to that one. That was pretty good, right? Are you not going to play it right now? Oh. Yeah. Obviously, that's the next step.
Starting point is 00:18:17 I didn't even think about that. That's true. Damn, we love hollow notes. Can't go for that. Can't go for that. Yeah, he can't go for that. He can't go for the man eater. Charles' chant also slays the sax in that song, too.
Starting point is 00:19:01 I just want to. Another shout out to the chant. We're not going to keep it going. But obviously, Castle and I love hollow notes and love these songs. And come to find a song. out, I don't think he, neither he nor I knew that man eater was about basically a guy that is in love with a girl. She may or may not be a prostitute. That's his description of her may be trashing her more than she actually is.
Starting point is 00:19:28 But it's a guy that is into a girl and he's telling another guy, don't get with her because she's going to hurt you. When in all actuality, me and Castle have both come to agree, if she were to look at him, he would give her, his private eyes, but instead he can't go for that. Am I summing this up correctly? Are you? Yeah, all that. I also, yeah, he nailed it. You pretty much nailed it.
Starting point is 00:19:53 Boom. I also want to give a couple more shout-outs to the song. One, instrumentals, fantastic, not just like that baseline. We talked about the saxophone, which absolutely slays it. And then they also got those other instrumentals that kind of got a little key drops right there. It's like, ding, ding. Bing, bing.
Starting point is 00:20:12 Just play that again. Also, we got to give a shout out to the whole part when he just, you know I always love it. When at the end of the song, after the third verse, they really just like let it go and they just like take it up here. When he's like, watch out, watch out, watch out, watch out, watch out, watch out. And he just starts throwing his watch out all over the map. And he just like lets that loose.
Starting point is 00:20:48 Let me hear that part again. part you're talking about. Let's hear this. Listen to that sax, my goodness. And the key. Oh, here she's your gone. Watch out, boy. She's a man eater. Watch out, watch out, watch out.
Starting point is 00:22:08 Okay, okay, okay, okay. And one more shout out goes to that little, watch out. It just gets dropped in there. She's a man eater. That's the oats part right there. He just comes into the watch out. That's all he does of this song.
Starting point is 00:22:18 Yeah, he has also a fantastic guitar play. I've heard many people acclaim him for being one of the top guitarist fall time so i'll give him props where he deserves it let's play a little devil's advocate though all right so we've discussed that what this sounds like is almost like a woman of the night who is just absolutely top dollars smoking and you know everybody understands once they like kind of get near here like oh man if you actually you want to get chewed up it's going to cost you something or everything but let's just say the man-eater
Starting point is 00:22:54 is actually a woman who's not there for dollars she's literally just a very fine specimen who just has absolutely like top tier weed
Starting point is 00:23:09 okay I want to run with that one I don't know where you're going with it I thought we were the top shot no no no like she just like her attention span is like so hard to keep because she just knows
Starting point is 00:23:22 that every single person around him is trying to, like, get her attention. They're like, look at this, look at this. I can get you drinks. And this guy's over here is like, I got a yacht. And this person's like, I got a cruise to Egypt. I don't know. That's a thing, but somebody might toss about that. The yacht has the guy that the cruise through your Egypt beat by a lot.
Starting point is 00:23:40 That's like 10,000 versus. That's what he's got. He's just throwing. Everybody's just throwing what they got at the wallet. And it's just like, everybody's just trying to figure like, oh, man, thousand. How do you keep this girl's attention? How do you actually like get it, keep her invested? Because, you know, you can get her interested in a second for a little bit, you know? And maybe you'll even be chewed up by her. You know, as Hall's like looking at it, like, oh, man, I was fortunate not to be chewed up by her.
Starting point is 00:24:10 And I'm going to warn people, but honestly, we'd love to get chewed up by her yet, you know. Yeah, I don't know if you can cruise to Egypt, though, because there's no sea. I mean, there's an ocean over there. No, like, Red Sea is really far from Cairo. I mean, where are we coming from? I'm just going to the country of Egypt. You're not going to necessarily Pyramids of Giza or anything like that? No, I mean, Egypt is a country that's on the corner of Africa.
Starting point is 00:24:28 Yeah, you can probably cruise. You're in a more, I don't think you can do it like necessarily from America. That would be a beast of a cruise. Pretty expensive cruise. Yeah, but that's why he's throwing that out there. He's like, this is the most top dollar cruise they have, and I will show you Africa.
Starting point is 00:24:42 And she's like, not interested. Nope. And she's just like, nobody can get her attention for more than like a day. You know, I got to be honest, for our last couple of, so that's got a really good job of not making... Not gearing off horse too much?
Starting point is 00:24:56 That's true. Gotta get back to our roots, Jess. Not making right turns and then staying in. Yeah. We were due for a right turn. We talked about cruise ships. Off Cairo. My brain just started to be like, can you?
Starting point is 00:25:09 Like, I forgot what we were talking about. Oh, hollow notes. Yeah. Man. And Charles' the chant. Lost me there. It came all the way back. It might be pronounced to chant.
Starting point is 00:25:19 Damn, I honestly forgot about it. I started talking about cruise ships. My brain went on. All right, well, let's, I guess, are we done? We are, right? Watch out, watch out. We did, because we heard all that. And we watched out, watched out.
Starting point is 00:25:29 So it's time to slap and snap. Slap and snap. All right. It's been a minute. It's not only that. It's first of all, it's because it's hollow notes. Yeah, yeah. Like, they get a little extra because of that group.
Starting point is 00:25:48 The beat, out the gate. Oh, man, the instrumentals are so fine. Again, it's soft but hard. It wakes you up, but it also puts you to sleep. It's, it's. You keep saying put you to sleep, but I almost just, I think what you mean is like it just relaxes you. I'm trying to, it not only gets me
Starting point is 00:26:05 excited like a cup of coffee would, like it like an espresso, whoa, I'm hyped up now. But it also, like legitimately with the saxophone and sometimes at certain points of that song can literally put me to sleep. The fact that it has the ability to be able to have both worlds in one song
Starting point is 00:26:21 is one of the most unique things I think I've ever heard. And I don't think I can't even pick another song that possibly does that where you're able to get, oh, I'm up, but if you want me to, I can go to sleep. I'm ready to party, but I'm also ready to chill and, you know, we can relax. Yeah, you can do what you want with this song. There's very long, very few songs are able to incapacitate both words.
Starting point is 00:26:42 And I know I use that word correctly because my vocabulary is fantastic. Because he explained that he did. That's how you know. So know that. But yeah, five, uh, five slaps. Who are you telling off right there? Five, five slaps, uh, no snaps. Straight five song.
Starting point is 00:26:58 A strict five slap. Stric 5 slap, hollow notes. Shout out to you guys. I would love to meet you guys some today. Eat the oats that you give and go down the halls that you've built for us in the music industry and created such works of art that allow Castle and I to not only be happy but sad. Cry, but yell. And you get the what I'm saying.
Starting point is 00:27:28 Castle. Yeah, it makes us both cry and yell. And that's it! Only those two emotions and sounds. All right, for both Hall and Oates and Mr. Charles Deschante on the sacks. I give it. Wait, wait, wait. That's it.
Starting point is 00:27:58 I'm giving it four slaps, a snap, and a watch out. Here's why. Now, first of all, that extra snap is because this is an absolute immaculate display of Artistry and Instrumentals. Hey, are you judging my slaps and snaps? I just gave it four slaps a snap and a watch out. I thought we said before, like, dude, whatever way.
Starting point is 00:28:20 You're making it sound like I gave them a shitty rating. They're rolling around the room of a five-slapper. And I'm explaining the positives first. The instrumentals of this song is an absolute, it's like an orchestra of 80s music because we got the amazing synth, awesome sax, beautiful keys and then Hall's
Starting point is 00:28:41 awesome voice and the only reason I don't go all the way to five slaps is because I'm not sure that it's my favorite hollow notes
Starting point is 00:28:52 song that's not all hollow notes are your favorite hollow notes we're not doing slaps and snaps for hollow notes
Starting point is 00:28:58 we're doing it for Man Eater but it's also includes hollow notes yes of course they're the ones who sang the damn song so you
Starting point is 00:29:04 I thought I thought what is confusing you. Are you gonna cry? You agreed, man. Wendy, what are he talking about? We never discussed this.
Starting point is 00:29:16 Fuck you, bro. I'll never cuss you out in 98 episodes. It's time. Fuck you. You're in your stupid rating. Your rating system sucks in you. There you go. He's been sleeping for like three hours.
Starting point is 00:29:41 Yeah, he just woke him up. He hates you now. Yeah. I already put up pink wristband on him earlier. All right, cool. So you gave it five. Thank you. Yeah, I got stronger. I'm into it. But also, they did deserve it. I got to be. Like, they're honestly, as awesome as Hall is as an 80s singer and Oates is on the guitar, the rest of the band just all brings it. And there's something about the music video that just portrays the coolness of both the band and just the song.
Starting point is 00:30:11 And it's not trying to do too much. They never actually really show them. And you only see like little body parts. You see, like, her feet and you are walking, and then you see the jaguar walking around the studio. And it's all implied. Like, they literally, like, this video probably cost them, like, nothing to make. Because they literally just performed in this dark studio. It's got some nice lighting that's kind of, like, mysterious. And it really just sums up the whole song. And there's a little mystery.
Starting point is 00:30:36 Like, they're also not telling you exactly. There's a little tongue-in-cheek in the lyrics where it could be what you want it to be. Like, we've listened to it for years, and we didn't even realize until we dissected it. that might be talking about a prostitute. I'm not even sure. But I'm not even sure that it is. Or could be talking about a guy that's hating on a girl that another guy is trying to talk to
Starting point is 00:30:57 and possibly start dating and he's like, watch out for her, even though he really wants her. I think that's more of what this is. I think so too. And maybe she goes to the richest bidder at the bar or whatever, and that is not about straight exchange for money. I don't think she does that. I think that's him talking.
Starting point is 00:31:14 That's him, yeah. Hating on her like. Trying to explain why she's not going for him. And she just looks to the next guy at the bar. And that's all she's doing. She's like, she's over him. Same thing. This is the same thing as Runaround Sue.
Starting point is 00:31:25 It's literally the same exact story happening. She's a man eater. That was a little bit more egregious. She's running around Sue. This is the same. I'm just saying. That was a little difference because he was Dion in Run Around Sue, which I believe is episode 25.
Starting point is 00:31:39 It goes way back in our archives. Check it out. You got a deep archives, people. It goes way before 80s month. You know? A lot of gems to dig out And if you're just getting... But how is this different from running around to this?
Starting point is 00:31:51 Exactly. Because he's saying that... A man eater. Dion was like saying she's been with every guy in town. That's what she's saying. He's not saying that. He's just saying she's chew you up. She's saying she's a prostitute.
Starting point is 00:32:03 He's saying she's a prostitute. No, we're just saying that might be what that is insinuating. That's what... And that's what he's insinuating through his words. He's insinuating, which is what Dionne was insinuating. This is the same exact story happened. It's hard to run around,
Starting point is 00:32:17 Sue and beyond, being the little bitch that he was in that story is exactly what Darrell, and just notice that similarities in name, Darrell,
Starting point is 00:32:25 Dion. In any case, Darrell is now portraying in this story where he's acting like a little bitch with a girl that he no longer wants him
Starting point is 00:32:33 and another guy is trying to date and he's telling the other guy, hey, leave her alone because she's going to hurt you or really all he does is want her. Fuck you,
Starting point is 00:32:40 Daryl, even though I love your music and I love you, I think you're great and you're amazing artist. And I'm sorry I just said that. Thank you.
Starting point is 00:32:50 Hey? She's a mannator. She'll chew you up. Next!
