What we're gonna do now is go back.
Oh, let's get a DJJ.
Castle.
It's the dissect DJ.
Hey.
Yo, DJ.
Dicect DJs.
What?
What?
What?
Let's go.
Here we go.
Time, ladies and gentlemen,
it is something that we and Castle have been wanting to come up with for so many years.
We have always talked about music, in depth about music.
we finally were like, you know what, let's bring this to the people.
It was really the three things we got to talk about podcasts,
which is possibly what brought you here.
That brought this whole idea.
Phenomenal podcast, by the way, if you have not listened to it.
Three things you got to talk about.
Spotify, iTunes, all the above.
All of your podcast listening tools.
So we created a feature on there called Breakdown This Song.
Breakdown this song.
And that spawned some of our favorite segments,
and we decided, hey, let's go ahead and spin off this whole podcast.
For me and you, just break down some songs.
I like it.
You dissect the mother-barrows.
We got to go in deep.
Get in deep, get in there.
Figure out exactly what the artist's thinking.
What are you thinking?
What does it make you feel?
What are they feeling?
What does the time period feel like?
What's the beat doing to you?
How's it make you feel?
And that's what we're getting into.
And we decided to go with our first song,
Out the gate, a song that talks about DJs
and how good they're making you feel.
Because we love the DJ.
Hey, Mr. DJ.
One of my favorite songs.
are grew to? How do you not want to groove to this beat as soon as it starts playing right away?
It can mix so well into the background of any beat. As soon as I hear it coming on, I'm like,
if I'm not in the dance for, the dance force found me.
Or in the car, or in your shower, or anywhere you need to be, this song just makes you feel good.
The first thing I think of when I hear that hook is smooth jam. Hell yeah. Get that song.
Because we all like know what it feels like when we're like, okay, there's that one song I want
to hear right now and then the DJ throws it on. You're like, okay, the party is a fist.
now we have begun, let's jam.
But, my question is,
do you think when she says
on and on and on,
she just wants a DJ to keep mixing the same song?
I hope not.
Because I've seen plenty of girls.
I know you have as a DJ.
That legitimately think that is a plausible idea
for a dance flick.
That's my favorite song.
Play it again.
How many times have you had...
I've been with you back there
when girls come up or even dudes
are like, oh, if you play this song.
And you're like,
I just just...
played that song and you get like immediately
you didn't even hear how I mixed into it like oh
you're dead to me you're dead to me yeah
I've heard you told multiple patrons
you're dead to me because like they missed the fact that
they already played the song that they just
smooth too I'll mix it smooth with another track and you're like
oh that was a good mix they're like
play it again like yeah there's nothing
we're in the other room play it again
they weren't even oh my god
they weren't even they were ladies
send one person up make sure she's respectable
and she goes
We want this song.
Is that okay?
And I'll be like, absolutely.
I'll get that off for you.
And I'll play that song.
If you don't hear the song,
if you go to the other room for the song,
if you're having shots through the song,
if you're making out or doing whatever you're doing during that song,
and you don't hear that song, that's not my problem.
All right?
Shout out to all the DJs.
I got your back brows.
And ladies.
She's saying,
she wants the party to start.
Everybody, I feel like she's at a party.
We've all been there.
She's at a party.
I feel like this young person's party.
And they're like,
I don't know how to start this party.
Now, this wouldn't be a problem.
for you and I because if there's a song on that I want to dance to. We would already even play it.
For younger groups that don't know how to get the party started. Most parties don't really know
exactly exactly what we need. This young lady is waiting for the DJ. As most parties are.
She's relying on the DJ, my profession for the last 15 years, something I've take pride in. The
DJ, please play that song. I've got to be honest, Castle. This is something that I take deep into heart.
The next song I'm going to choose is going to make these people move and groove. And that's what she's
putting the pressure on this DJ. She's coming in her life with the pressure.
Let's go, man.
I'm ready to party.
All right, so let's hear it.
As far as the way she's approaching this,
I feel like she wants the promoter or like somebody else that,
like the DJ is not in control of telling you where the party is.
I'm just in control of the party when you get there.
You know what?
Promoters are supposed to let you know.
Club owners, flyers.
But like, don't call me.
Don't call me that day and tell me my girl.
Sometimes it is a DJ though.
Maybe.
I hear that verse very differently
Because I hear it like
It's Friday night
I need to unwind
You ever like walk around like a strip of bars
And you're almost just looking for that one bar
That just got this song playing
That you're like
Okay, jams is that way
And you almost just follow that direction
I'm kind of getting that vibe from it
You remember in the Rescue Rangers
When Monterey Jack
Used to get a whiff of cheese
And his mustache would be like
And then his eyes would get all crazy
And he'd be like
Cheese
If you never watch Rescue Rangers, anybody out there, I apologize.
But, like, look it up.
It's a hilarious image.
And he starts floating towards.
There's like a whiff of cheese.
Like, you can see it in the air.
And he starts floating towards it.
Like, oh, I get cheese.
Like, he gets all fucking high on this.
Does he doesn't Speeding Gonzalez do the same exact thing?
No, not that I've ever seen.
That's kind of what I feel like is the energy that she's bringing right now.
It's like, yo, it's Friday night.
I need to unwind.
Just tell me where the party's at.
And it depends on where the music's at.
She doesn't want to just go to a party based on
who's there or what the scene is or what's popping or the club or what the promoters tell her
she's there specifically to hear jams and you know what when i think about it this way now that
she got into this verse i think that she's saying play this all night based on the idea of
yo keep this going keep the vibe going keep the vibe going keep this vibe yeah so see me from
coming from a dj point of view i feel like she's talking to me right directly she's like
hey dj where's the party at i don't want my phone blowing you
up. It's here. How are you not
looking at my Instagram already? Now, this song was made
in 1990, whatever it was. So,
I didn't have this. I think it's 93. We should look it up, though.
We should look it up. But in any case, so I get
that. But at this point in time, hit my social
media. You know what's funny? That'll tell you.
194, by the way. That the term, hey,
Mr. DJ, it hits you and I
completely different. Because, like, to me, it sounds
just like, hey, Mr. DJ. It's like, oh, it's like
somebody's yelling at me. And then you were like,
what? Play a fucking song.
They want.
Putting a lot of pressure on the DJ.
You should get it sometimes, though, you know?
I mean, I'm okay with the problem.
A lot of pressure goes on the DJ.
But she's out there.
She's like, DJ, if you don't play a good song right now that we're all feeling,
ladies and gentlemen, do you understand the DJ has to understand
ethnicities, nationalities, the age differences,
everything that the DJ has to understand and then play the exact song
that he thinks that all the people in front of him that match everything I just spoke of
that they want to hear?
Okay?
I'm going to do my absolute best.
But if I play a song you don't like, you know what?
You should be a good enough enthusiast of the evening to understand, you know what?
Hopefully the next song is better, but I'm going to dance right through this song.
And this is where Kassel and I succeed when we go out.
To a point, because if a DJ sucks and he keeps playing shitty hits, we're going to leave.
But for the most part, we understand not a good hit.
I'm going to dance right through this one.
Damn, next one wasn't good either.
There's my jam.
Number three was it.
And now my shoulders are jiggling.
I got about a three song limit with a shitty DJ.
But if they play it's a third one
Then he's bought himself another five songs
Maybe maybe
It depends how many songs in there suck
If you go shitty shitty shitty good
He only gets two rounds of that
But the next good one
If he plays another shitty
I'm getting a vibe
Yeah
Especially if those those good ones
Or we're like well obviously
Like that's the song
You gotta play right now
It's like one of those
But like this song for example
If a DJ actually does play the song
He really has my attention
Because I'm like
This is a very specific vibe
that a lot of DJs will miss
but if they get
then I'm getting them
so that's my kind of DJ
no I get it man I just
sometimes every once in a while
as a DJ I'll try to read the crowd
and do everything I spoke of
and read all the different
dynamics that a DJ is supposed to read
to try to figure that song and then I'll play the song
and nobody goes out and you could tell
everybody hated the song you're like
and you feel like you're just
I don't know whatever
you're right
maybe just play the song again
now could I be honest as a DJ
this happens all the time
you repeat yourself
wait a second
you just said that same verse
you didn't change the verse
you literally forgot that you asked me
for the song I played the song
you come back and are like
ask me the exact same way
in the exact same manner
although she didn't do it in the exact same way
no she changed up how she said it
which tells me
Which, honestly, to be honest, all the years I've been listening to this,
I don't think I ever realized it was identically the same verse.
She just way cooler.
She didn't sing it once and then just replay it,
because she re-sang the whole line's completely different.
And yeah, that's exact same words.
Exactly same words.
Completely different way.
Completely different.
And it fooled me all these years.
I always kind of just, I didn't necessarily know it was a different verse,
but I always just kind of felt like it was.
And you all sing the same words again.
This is the same shit.
She went, hey, hey, hey, hey.
Instead of the first time, she was like, hey, hey, hey, mister.
Yeah, she changes it slightly but different and a lot.
And I always thought it was.
She goes off to like a different octave.
That's it.
She changes the whole verse without changing a single word.
But you're right.
It just goes right back to those girls.
It doesn't do the same thing again.
I think the rest of the song.
I'm ready to get it.
Yeah, yeah.
Yeah, I'm almost ready to get it around.
He comes in and just save the track.
He slayed that shit.
The track is slowly losing your want to listen to it.
You're like, I heard this already.
And then he comes in, go, we're to play a boar-ho.
I would say that it's right before you're starting to feel.
Because I never feel that at any point.
It's like, if it goes any longer.
If it did one more verse of her kind of doing the same thing.
Then he comes in with that perfect verse.
It's exactly what it needs to be.
It's the perfect speed.
The perfect volume.
He's keeping the 94 feel.
He's keeping that theme that's going like, hey, yo, DJ, this is all about you.
Just blow the horn.
Keep playing that song.
Maybe I'll browse, snatch up a blouse, rip the foul.
Oh, I gotta rub my dubs doll, you know?
He's looking at the club, investigate.
Now he needs to inhabit.
Ooh, this is my jungle.
I'm about to take over.
Like, that's what this song is doing for this dude.
Just so good.
He just jumps in so well.
Because your body won't move if you can't fit a groove.
So can't boogie and have your groove.
Hey, feel it with the vibe, rolling with the flavor,
feeling all right.
Like he just didn't live.
to the last.
Oh, yo, the party's over here.
Yo, oh, no.
The party's over there.
Which, by the way, is the best line of the song.
Can we do a award thing as we go forward in this for the award for the best line?
Top line.
I like that one.
Oh, yo, the party's over here.
Yo, yo, yo, the party's over there.
You know what?
Like your friends with them no fan's tagging along.
Is EJ.
Keep playing that song.
Because when you establish that the party is both here and over there, like, who's going to get mad?
Like, yo, so we're all parting, and the DJ keep playing this song.
And then the rest of the troll just rides out.
Great, right out song.
And give it to the DJ.
He keeps a song moving and growing.
Oh, the dissect DJs have dissected their first song.
We dissected the H out of that.
We did what we needed to do.
And what a smooth beat to begin with.
And let me just say, if you don't like a good smooth 90s R&B hip-hop beat like this,
then you can screw.
If you don't like 90s music, stop listening to our podcast.
I mean, I don't want to like...
I'm alienating them. Get out of here.
I don't want to instruct people to get out of it.
Go home.
Can you stop alienating your listeners out of the bat?
We're going to do an eclectic mix of different music, all right?
Wait, she's coming back.
She's coming back.
She's kind of going to say the same thing, though.
I feel like I know what she's got to say.
Honestly, Jeannet, the girl in the song, she kind of mostly says the same.
But, you know, she keeps it simple.
She keeps it
Although they had the background singer
Come up with like
But you know what
That's fine
She didn't need to do too much
And she kept it to where she
She let the beat ride
This dope-ass 90s beat is just carrying
The whole song
And like that's all she needed to do
And she had to do her basic R&B
Let the rapper come in
Do you want to know
What this song honestly
Before it became like a regular
staple in my playlist
Always reminded me of
That Fresh Prince episode
When Ashley Banks
Was like a singer
And the first time that Will
realizes that
Ashley could sing is she's at a CD store.
Remember how back in the day when the CD stores you could go listen to a track and like put your
headphones on?
You don't remember that?
Yeah.
So she's like listening to music and she's singing the song.
And for some reason everybody else listening to her sing is just starts like dancing.
Like in that 90s extras in a sitcom kind of way, just all our dancing all cheesy.
And then next thing he looks back at her and just sees a dollar sign with her hat dancing and singing.
And he's like, touching.
That was always what this song reminded me
I heard the longest time before it really became a staple in my place.
So as she banks, I think, probably helped put this song back on the mat,
aka Tatiana Ali.
I'm just, I'm throwing back at the fact that she wants the DJ to do so much for her evening, okay?
You know what?
You should be with a group of friends that the song shouldn't matter so much.
I'm doing my best out here, okay?
As a DJ, I'm doing my absolute best.
And she's just putting pressure.
My girls are ready to buggy.
I want to dance.
DJ, play that song, or I'm going to be pissed.
You know what?
Maybe I don't want to play that song.
Maybe that song's played out.
Maybe you like that song and nobody else in the club likes the song.
I'm very disappointed and frustrated with the way that she, the pressure, the absolute pressure.
I don't feel that she's putting on the DJ.
I don't think like the vibe she put out at all.
She's not yelling at the DJ.
She's dancing.
I'm imagining this girl dancing with her eyes closed.
I mean like, hey, DJ, keep playing this song.
You feel how you feel.
I feel how you feel.
And that is what the dissect DJ's.
do, ladies and gentlemen.
You know what, you know what song does what you're talking about?
Is that Jennifer Lopez song called Play?
When she wants the DJ to play her song, which is the whole other shit.
And she literally gets in before the third hook and is like, now DJ, I've asked you three times, play my motherfucking song.
Like she's yelling at the DJ.
She's doing what you're talking about.
I would pour a drink on that bitch.
Jennifer Lopez?
I don't think you.
If you're yelling at me to play a soul, I don't care who you are.
You have seen me, Castle.
I don't think you throw a joke at Jennifer Lopez.
I'd be like, who are you yelling at?
Who are you yelling at?
Cool.
Who are you yelling at?
Who did?
I just did.
And that's what we did.
We convince ourselves into, I will throw a drink on Jennifer Lopez.
He won't.
And that's where we are, ladies and gentlemen.
I'll probably just say what's up.
So we are there.
What's up, Miss Lopez?
How are you doing?
I'm going to do my best.
My conclusion of this song is, ladies and gentlemen, I am a DJ.
I will do my best.
Hey, Mr. DJ, play that song when I feel like it.
Okay?
When I get to it, I'll play it.
And I am disappointed that these ladies want so much pressure on the weekend.
Oh my God, stop throwing shade on the ladies.
They're dancing on the floor.
These girls are clearly dancing and enjoy yourself.
Go out and enjoy yourself.
They are.
And they're enjoying your music.
They are enjoying your music.
Don't what about the DJ.
The DJ will play was going to play.
He's going to do his best.
I can't believe you're getting such a negative approach from the song.
You know what?
If they're making the dance more pop, then that's something.
All right, so I want to come up with a rating system for these songs because
everybody's got a rating system.
If we could surmise everything out with just like our quick rating, that'd be cool.
So let's figure out some way we can judge things.
Because A, B, C, that's played out.
Points.
Points.
Points is too easy, too.
Stars.
Everybody does side.
Like, Siskel and Eber, they give, like, Star.
Like, movie.
Like, what about, like, fist pumps?
We'd be like, oh, that song gets four and a half fist pumps out of five.
No, man.
No.
Ron and all them black asses, Vinnie and all them fucked that up in Jersey Shore.
Sure, yeah.
Yeah, they did fuck up.
I was so in a fist pump.
Like, I like fist pumping.
I loved it until they did kind of, like.
Your Honor, a jersey shirt.
You're sure in it.
You're jersey shorted it.
Let's see.
What else we got?
What, like, I don't know.
What?
But like slaps.
You know, and some people like that, yeah.
Like slap your mama four times or something?
No, you not slap your mama.
Don't put a negative connotation.
That's a good part.
I don't know.
Slap your mom is a good.
What a check?
Slaps, it slaps.
How many times does it make you be like,
yo?
You know what I like about slaps?
Is it sounds like an old 80s like,
oh, that shit's slapping.
It's just slaps right.
And then it also sounds like we can bring
a bag.
All right.
So how many slaps would be the perfect song?
Is it like out of five?
Are we doing an out of five system?
I'm just going to go ahead and approve slaps as being our rating system.
All right.
Slaps is the rating system.
And it could be full slaps or half slaps.
No, but let's do out of five though.
Out of five slaps.
But it could be four or half.
So you got three and a half.
We've got BEP plus.
That's a half slap.
Yeah, you got three and a half.
That was three and a half.
Yeah, yeah.
Three and a half slaps.
All right.
So how many slaps does Hey, Mr. DJ get for you?
Four slaps.
Four slaps.
Hey, Mr. DJ gets four slabs.
So what nobody else saw is that you pretend to do the half slaps.
So I wasn't sure that.
No, I left the half slap, left it alone.
It's four slaps.
Hey, Mr. DJ.
I like it.
You know why I kept it at four and not four and a half or five?
It's because I never realized and I'm very disappointed.
You think they're yelling at you.
That's one reason.
And number two, she repeats the exact same thing.
Yeah, that one, I never really.
I like when you repeat.
Yeah.
Come up with something else.
Something that flows similarly and,
And it could have sounded the same, but different.
Yeah. That's a good point.
Especially considering that that was the only sound that we've ever really owned her from.
He saved the track.
He brought a knock up to four.
She knocked it down a three to a half.
I got to be honest with you, man.
I wanted to give it four and a half slaps, but then you just brought that up.
And yeah, I think it's far.
So let me hear it.
Either way.
Let me hear it.
Four slaps.
Dysak DJs is what we do.
Be ready for all the episodes.
Let's get it.
that note, I think it's time to say,
next!
