Surprised, and like you guys were talking about, very surprised by the timing.
I didn't see any reason that it had to be done now.
What up, everybody.
I love that music.
Nice to be with you on this Thursday afternoon.
Alana Rizzo, Clint Paseas with you on a brand new, fresh episode of Dodgers territory.
Happy to be with you guys.
Happy that you're here with us.
Like us, subscribe, all the things.
We're appreciating it very much.
Big show for you today.
Bill Plunkett is going to be on the show talking all things.
Dodgers, of course.
A lot to get to, Clint, in the big ticket.
Let's do it.
I understand the business.
side of things. I really do. I get it. The Dodgers main priority is to win baseball games,
but it doesn't mean that the business side of the thing doesn't stink. And Austin Barnes was such
a huge piece of this Dodgers puzzle for the course of 11 seasons. The Dodgers, and what I think is
a bit of a surprising move, again, I understand it, but a bit of a surprising move, DFA, the Dodgers
veteran catcher. And they're going to give Dalton rushing a chance. You know, Austin has been a part of this
fabric for 11 seasons when he came over from the Houston Astros. And he's helped guide this team to
two World Series championships and a lot of postseason appearances. And I understand that he wasn't
an everyday catcher, obviously. I know the production's been hit or miss over the course of the
last couple of seasons. But the way that he guided the pitching staff, he did everything this team
asked him to do. And it's just a little weird, right, to not have Barnsey in a Dodger uniform.
So congratulations, Austin, on an amazing career.
And certainly, I wish him well, Clint.
Yeah, I mean, we would assume it's not over.
You know, they did leave him plenty of time to hopefully go out and find himself another gig.
Hopefully not with an NLS team.
We'd hate to see him wearing a Giants uniform.
We'd hate to see him wearing a Padre's uniform.
But all in all, the reaction to the move, it's shocking.
But also at the same time, it makes a lot of sense.
You know, we hit a point in Austin Barnes's 10 years.
year with the Dodgers where he just plainly wasn't adding value on either side of the ball for the
team or at least not at the level that they needed in the Shohei Otani era where, you know,
that you're expected to win and everybody's expected to contribute in some way, shape, or form.
And that was my thought here, you know, listen, great clubhouse dude, but there's only so long just
having good vibes and bringing smiles to the team, how long that's going to, you know,
keep you having a job.
And the reality is he'd been pretty negative.
on, you know, people like to say, oh, he's a defensive whiz or whatever, he's a great game caller.
Hey, you know, the bench is calling games a lot these days and all that kind of stuff.
But beyond that, just the bat wasn't there and the glove had been declining for a good little while.
So it's time you have this kid, Dalton rushing, who is ready to go.
And at some point, you know, the Dodgers need to kind of, we'll say shit or get off the pot when it comes to them preaching.
it's a meritocracy.
You can play your way to playing time at the big league level,
yet keep burying these dudes at AAA.
So for Dalton rushing at 24 years of age,
it is time to come up and get your feet wet
and start finding a way to play yourself.
You'll force your way into the lineup.
And I'm going to ask Bill Plunk at this
when he joins the show here momentarily,
but the timing is a little peculiar in that two ways.
I think the timing is interesting.
Obviously, Clayton Kirschaw is going to make his debut
for the 2025 season on.
Saturday in his 18th season as a Dodger. And that was his guy, right? When it was AJ,
before, you know, Austin Barnes, it was AJ Ellis and then it became Barnes. Not to say that he doesn't
like Will Smith catching him, but I guarantee you it's going to be Will Smith behind the plate when
Kershaw throws on Saturday. It's not going to be rushing. So I'm interested at the timing of that.
Why wait? Why not wait until Kersh is, you know, going to make that start? And also interesting that the
Dodgers are willing to start the clock on rushing's service time, you know, do you think,
have you thought any deeper into the timing of this, or is it just that, listen,
this is a team that wants to win and they're going to do whatever it takes to win.
It's never pretty, but now's the time to do it.
And do you think, I guess it's a two-part question, are you interested about the timing,
and do you think CT3 is next?
CT3. That's another whole conversation we'll have to have. And I'm interested in getting Bill's thoughts about that. But the timing, I think it's a part out of respect to Austin letting him find time or have time to try to potentially latch on with another ball club and find a contender, find the right job that makes sense for him. If he's a backup catcher, he has a wealth of experience, he's going to be able to find a gig. So I think it makes more sense there.
and see if the bat plays, because if the bat plays at the big league level,
now you'll know you'll have a few months before the trade deadline to see you.
Like, hey, this guy is going to be the difference maker we need,
or do we actually need to be active at the trade deadline?
So that's kind of what I feel about it or where I think the thinking is a little bit beyond just,
you know, hey, the numbers for Barnes haven't quite been there.
And, well, they haven't really been there for the last couple of years.
But that's my thought on it.
Okay, here's what you're getting from Dalton rushing.
And I know you've been high on this kid for quite some time.
I know you're really into the farm system and all of what's coming up through the pike.
But Dalton rushing in 2025 and AAA, Clint, you noticed it here.
Blake Harris did it as well.
A 308 average, a 938 OPS, 11 extra base hit 17 ribbies, a 412 career OBP in the miners.
Of course, he was the second round pick in 2022 out of Louisville, which is the same place that Will Smith went.
So maybe they're just a catcher factory there in Louisville.
I was just there.
I saw the University of Louisville and I saw Will Smith's bat at Louisville Slugger.
Something tells me you were around the derby and around Kentucky recently.
I was.
I was.
I was.
Big Willie style is big there in those parts.
So Dalton Rushing.
I mean, you're high on this kid.
What makes you most excited about this?
Yes, for sure.
What makes you most excited about this move?
Well, we've heard from Dave.
we've heard from the front office for the last couple of years
or really the last season and a half
or season and change. Like the bat is ready.
This is a kid that is major league ready
with the bat, or at least you assume he's major league
ready, AAA and that leap
to major league baseball is a, it's a
big leap, of course, as we all
know, having watching it, none of us play it.
But the bat,
at some point you run
out of seasoning at AAA. You
got to see how the bat works at the
major league level and what more is there
to prove at AAA. Bring him up.
and see now where you could fit them in the lineup beyond just two days a week, you know, spelling Will Smith.
That's a big thing for me.
I love the fact that Smitty is going to get those days off because I've been bitching and moaning about that for at least the last three years when every year in the second half, he has heard off, depending on the offensive side.
You're absolutely right.
You and Hector in our chat are on the same page.
Hector has to say this move is also to protect Will Smith and his health.
He's playing five, maybe six days out of the week and he's 30 years old, which, by the way, I've killed to be.
be 30. I'd kill to be 40, whatever. You need someone to help out offensively when Will takes
the day off. I mean, I think that's part of the picture, right? That when Will was not,
you know, starting the game at least, always a threat to come off the bench, of course.
But when Will wasn't starting a game, you need somebody that you think can complement at least
a certain amount of those numbers that Will is going to get you. So I guess it's time, right?
It's the Dalton rushing era is here. Yeah. And I'm interested to get more thoughts from our friend
Bill Plunkett, but first, we do have to take a moment to hear from our friends at Fowl Territory.

Yeah, that's really nice.
I'm Brian.
I work at UnitedHealthcare.
So, Brian, why do you care?
I care because I don't want to leave anybody behind.
I oversee one of the biggest resource center in UnitedHealthcare.
I see people walked in my office every day, just like my parents.
They have no idea about the health care.
I feel like they are my uncles, aunties.
I treat people like family.
I'm Brian and I'm committed to care.
There he is.
What a guy.
All right.
Appreciate you, Arena Club.
And we want to welcome in Bill Plunkett with the Southern California News Group.
Always appreciated him taking the time to be with us.
Bill is on this beat.
Has been for quite some time.
So he's in the mix of this.
Quite some time.
My friend.
Great to see you.
Okay.
Before we move any further,
What was your initial reaction when you knew that Austin Barnes had been DFAed?
Surprised, and like you guys were talking about, very surprised by the timing.
I didn't see any reason that it had to be done now.
Yeah, I guess the idea that rushing had gotten everything he was going to get out of AAA, so you bring him up.
I get that.
For me, the reason that rings the truest is that you don't want to play Will Smith into the ground.
His second halfs, not just last year, the last two or three years, have been bad.
And there's no talking around that.
They've been bad.
And they're counting on him to be a big part of the offensive production.
Not a lot of catchers can carry that load.
They want him to stay as fresh as possible, which would mean playing Austin Barnes more.
And I think Saturday's game in Arizona was kind of the last straw, and it wasn't offensively.
Austin hasn't, you know, contributed a whole lot on offense for a few years now.
but his defense has really, it's gone downhill.
The throwing aspect especially, watching him try to, you know, deal with the Diamondbacks running game on Saturday,
probably gave the front office a lot of pause.
I wonder if Austin's, you know, shoulder is bad, if he's got an injury or something,
his throwing has gotten so poor the last season and a half.
yeah that's about the only thing I can think of that demanded the move be made now.
If he's got a sneaky hidden injury, he'd be a real true Dodger hanging out with everybody else
with these hidden injuries that I don't want to talk about.
When we talk about what Barnsie means to this club, it's not so much what he does on the
field.
We've heard the players address the fact.
It's what he brings to that clubhouse.
Call it the vibes or whatever.
They call him the unofficial captain.
Bill, what do you think this does clubhouse-wise?
Because it feels a whole lot like the AJ Ellis trade of a number of years back.
Yeah, I would bet Clayton Kershow would agree with you there.
And he was not happy when AJ got traded.
I'm sure he was not happy to get the news yesterday.
It's interesting.
Max Muncie called Austin a pillar in the clubhouse.
I think there are a lot of pillars.
now. You know, I think Max Muncie in part is one. Freddie, Mooky, in their way, are,
I think there are enough pillars that things don't come crashing down when you take one away.
Everybody liked Barnsey. The pitchers really trusted him when they were, you know,
throwing to him. But I think they move on and they do find, you know, even subtracting him.
I'm a big believer.
I'm a big believer that
that team culture,
clubhouse culture is established.
Team chemistry is a year-to-year thing.
And I've always had the argument,
which comes first, the chicken or the egg.
Is it a good team that has good team chemistry?
I don't know that it's because it has good team chemistry.
Is it, you know, last year they won?
So that was a wonderful team chemistry because they won everything.
So I've heard that a lot over the years.
You know, what a great club we have and everybody gets along and it's great chemistry.
Well, if you're 10 games under 500, I bet that chemistry wouldn't be as good.
Yeah, no question about it.
Winning creates great chemistry.
Does it not build Plunkett?
Do you think that CT3 would be next on that chopping block, just based on the
the same reasoning, right? The lack of production, not enough playing time, not necessarily a
place to put them. And again, this is a team that wants to win and they want to win now.
I mean, what do you see the fate of Chris Taylor being?
I think he would be next up if they had somebody that they needed that spot for.
I don't see anybody down in AAA behind rushing that's demanding major league get bats.
You know, they've got a few guys doing an okay.
Nobody's demanding the at-bats at the big league level.
So until they have somebody, you know, demanding that spot, I think Chris is safe.
You know, maybe at the trade deadline, they look to upgrade in that position, and then he becomes vulnerable.
But right now there's nobody pushing him out.
The only thing that I could see a little bit of change happening,
with there or maybe forcing the team's hand a little bit is we're seeing Heson Kim maybe be better
than some people expected at this point in his MLB tenure.
And of course, this team does welcome back to Oscar Hernandez and Tommy Edmund soon enough,
hopefully soon enough.
So maybe there is some moving chairs there.
But yeah, I think Chris Taylor, if they were going to do something, they probably would have
done it in the off season or even before the season rather than, I don't know, six to eight
weeks into the season, but, you know, is that it?
Something like, I'm sorry, babes.
I'm sorry, you know, it's a long season and I feel your pain.
You have the pain much worse.
You got to go to the games.
I get to sit my ass here in a chair a lot of the times and, you know, have fun with it that
way, just yell at the screen.
But, you know, we are at this point of the season.
We're a quarter of the way through the season.
I guess that helps.
There's a few different ways we could take this.
I do want to address the Kim or get your thoughts on Hesson.
Kim. Would you kind of agree with a statement that he's been more of a pleasant surprise as a
big leaguer than anticipated?
Absolutely. Absolutely. He looks like a big leaguer now. In spring training, he did not
look like a big leaguer. He looked like he was overmatched by big league pitching in spring
training when they're not game planning, when they're not scouting to see your weaknesses.
He was just overpowered.
That hasn't been the case since he got called up.
And you might have something there.
I do think they would like to keep him around.
They may talk themselves into, well, let's send him back to AAA where he can play every day
because, you know, the lineup will get a little more crowded when Tommy Edmund and
Teosker Hernandez come back.
But I do think he has opened some eyes and looks much more big league ready than he did a couple months ago.
Let's switch gears now, Clint, to the starting, or Bill rather, to the starting rotation of these Los Angeles Dodgers.
Roki Sasaki, the shoulder impingement.
Was he pitching through pain?
Is this just something that you can just expect, take your number because you're a Dodgers starter, you're going to go on the IL?
It's your turn.
What do you make of this Roki Sasaki situation?
I do think he was injured, that there's something going on.
We watched that start in Arizona, and he was, you know, 93, 94 with a fastball that came advertised as 100.
And we hadn't seen him throw 100 since Tokyo when probably adrenaline had a lot to do with it.
He has not shown that overpowering exceptional fastball for a few starts.
So yes, I do think something's going on in there.
He had the same issue last year in Japan, missed a lot of time.
Velocity was down.
If you remember, when he was a free agent this winter, he went to teams and said,
you know, here's your homework assignment.
Explain why I'm losing velocity.
So he was aware of it and worried about it before this season even started.
So that aside, I think it's pretty convenient that he goes to the IL because now they can, you know, work him out and send him to Arizona, maybe work at the complex, try and figure out some things with his mechanics and his command.
and maybe he goes on a really long rehab assignment in AAA.
I think he needs to work on things in the minor leagues.
I don't think it would have been good for his psyche for them to just straight out send him down.
I think that he would have felt like a failure after all the hype and all the excitement coming over from Japan to get sent down.
I think he would have had a hard time with that.
now you couch it as you know we want your shoulder to stay healthy so we're going to send you down
to work on these mechanical changes and adjustments that we want you to make so it could it could work
out to be very convenient in the long run but yeah I do think he's hurt and something's not right
hardly the only Dodger starting pitcher hurting I thought we left all of these injuries in
24. I thought they loaded the starting rotation so much where we were like, where is Clayton
Kershaw? How does he fit into the mix? I think the last time we had you on, we had that question.
Where does Clayton Kershaw pitch? Now it's like, please, Clayton, we need you back.
Did you have this on your bingo card? What, five starting pitchers on the aisle?
Yes, I did. Go back and look at the tweets. When they signed these guys in the offseason,
and everybody was talking about this being the deepest, greatest collection of starting pictures ever.
And I tweeted out each name and the medical history or the issue that they had.
You know, Yamamoto missed time with his shoulder last year.
Tyler Glasnow is Tyler Glasnow, and he ended last year with the elbow.
And, you know, Blake Snell has missed time with this, this, and this.
and Clayton Kershaw is 38 years old or whatever he is.
Every one of these guys that they collected,
except maybe Bobby Miller and, you know, the minor league type prospects,
every one of them has history.
Every pitcher in the majors does pretty much.
But yes, we all saw this coming.
We should have been able to see it coming.
The thing that they thought they had done
is collect enough quantity to make up for it.
You know, so we're probably, you know, at the beginning of the year when they first lost these guys, the reaction was, where's all this depth?
Well, it's starting to show up now. Tony Gonsland's in the rotation.
Clayton Kershaw will be in the rotation this weekend.
So some of that depth is showing up.
Some of it, like Bobby Miller, has disintegrated and isn't there.
I do think we will see Blake Snell and Tyler Glass now making starts for the Dodgers again.
They're not gone forever.
Sasaki will probably be back at some point too, and we'll have this same discussion then.
How do they fit all these guys into the rotation?
It's not a problem.
It always works out.
Somebody gets hurt.
Somebody has an issue.
You have to have quantity these days.
You have to have 10, 12 starters, viable big league starters.
In this case, that has to include some of these minor league guys.
And it's also going to include Clayton Kershaw, who comes back on Saturday, May 17th,
to make his 2025 season debut.
What are the realistic expectations?
And I know that phrase is unbelievably cliche.
But with Clayton Kershaw, obviously on the back nine of his career,
a first ballot hall of famer on his way to Cooperstown.
but, you know, he is 37 years old, basically, I think.
What do you think you can get from the one-time ace Bill Plunkett
as he makes his return?
I think when Clayton Kershaw takes the mound, he is still an elite pitcher.
He may be only throwing 87, 88, but he knows how to pitch.
He has other things to get guys out.
He figures it out as it goes.
If you look back, he hasn't pitched much the last couple years,
but when he did pitch for the most part, he was pretty darn good.
So I think they get that guy again.
I hope they get him healthy for the rest of the season.
If that's the case, he puts up some pretty good numbers.
We were having this, playing this game in the press box the other day.
Who makes more regular season starts the rest of the way?
Kershaw, Otani,
Glasnow, Snell,
put him in order.
Wow, wow.
That's a good, that's a really good question.
That's a really good question.
I'm stealing this for my show on Saturday.
I think Kershaw is number one on that list.
I think he probably makes more starts the rest of the season than any of these guys.
He got it all fixed.
Everything is fixed.
All of the problems.
You know, you got shoulder, you got knee, you got foot.
Hopefully he has feeling it.
No, something new breaks.
Yeah, yeah.
Listen, I can vouch for that.
As you get older, things tend to break more often.
Yeah, my shoulders hurt and just kind of sitting here doing this chat with you guys.
Quickly, Bill, before we let you go, we did hit the quarter pole of the season, as we kind of said.
If you could kind of summarize or grade, you know, it's your choice here.
The first quarter of the season, what are your thoughts about where this team stands right now?
I think I would say they are playing at maybe 75% of capacity, put it that way, and they still have the best, do they have the best record in the NL as of today?
I know it's gone back and forth a little bit at 75% capacity.
So that's a pretty darn good team.
As we say almost every year with these guys, it doesn't matter how things go in May.
what team do they have on the field in September going into October?
That's all that matters with this team.
And, you know, we're not going to know for a few months yet.
But people are expecting so much from these guys.
And, you know, stuff happens.
162 games is a lot of baseball.
And weird stuff happens along the way.
I never believed that they were going to win 115, 120 games.
In the regular season, my number was always 105, and that might, it feels a little high now.
But if they start getting people back, if they can stay healthy for a stretch, you know, they put up some numbers and maybe they get a little distance between themselves and the rest of the NL West.
Yeah, an NL West that seems to be incredibly competitive this year.
So it's a lot of fun to see how that's going to play out.
I picked 109 wins for this season, Bill.
Let's see what happens.
They do have the best winning percentage in the National League.
Only the Detroit Tigers have a better winning percentage in all of baseball.
Like we all expected.
Like we all expected.
Yeah, we all saw it.
Absolutely.
Bill Plunkett, you are the best.
We appreciate you taking the time.
We'll see you at the park.
Thanks so much.
Happy to do it, guys.
Take care.
All right.
Bill Plunkett, we appreciate you.

No, no.
She doesn't like people.
We're good.
Oh, you're good.
Yeah, we're good.
Hey, Liz, we asked Bill.
Yeah.
Yeah.
We're at a quarter way of the, through the season.
Obviously, you talked about it today with Ken on, on fair about the quarter poll of the season,
but not so much specifically about the Dodgers.
If you got to grade your thoughts about this Dodgers team and, you know,
baseball as a whole over the first, how many games?
What's a quarter of 162?
We're like, we're about 40, 45 games.
I don't do math.
Math's not my 40-10.
Yeah, no, I get it.
I mean, we'll think about it right now.
The Dodgers are sitting at 28 and 15.
So that's 43 games played so far.
So there you have it at the quarter of call.
I'm going to give them a B plus A minus, as Bill Plunkett was saying,
playing at about 75%, right?
But we also have to realize that we're sitting here attacking a team that's in first place
and has the best winning percentage in the National League, and they're doing just fine.
So, of course, we want them to be perfect on all cylinders every single game.
We want everything to go well.
What we also want, a 48-person roster and, you know, all the things.
So I'm going to give them a B-plus, A-minus.
I'm very excited that Clayton Kershaw is coming back, obviously.
As far as the league is concerned at the quarter poll, I'm going to say the biggest
surprise in the National League is the St. Louis Cardinals. I don't think anybody would have thought
that they would have been nine and one in their last 10. I think they're in second place right now,
Clint, in the NL Central, a game out of first. I don't think anybody would have thought that. I certainly
did not. And as far as the American League is concerned, I'm going to go with the Tigers. I think the Tigers
right now, by the way, happy birthday to AJ Hinch. I know a lot of Houston Astros fans.
I know. Josh's fans love AJ Hitch. Oh, yeah, I know they do. But anyway, he has his team playing
really good baseball right now. I'm going to say that the Tigers are the most complete team in the
American League. Yeah, no. Tigers have been really, really good. Apparently bringing aboard World Series
champion, World Series hero, Jack Flaherty, bringing him back to the mix, really, really helped them out.
I got to say, he's not the reason. I love Jack, but he's not the reason so far. He has an ERA north of five.
So we're going to go there. He's pretty good. And the resurgent super utility man, Javier Baez,
definitely helps them out. So I'll cheat as well. I'll say my AL surprise is definitely the Tigers,
probably right behind them, the Mariners, because I didn't think they did enough to have
a shot to be in first place at this point. They're still not a very strong team at 23 wins.
The National League, yeah, you know, I guess, I guess you got to go with the Cardinals because
they were supposed to be doo-doo entering this season. Cubs are pretty decent as well. I think
the NL Central as a whole has been kind of a surprise. But when it comes to it,
our Dodgers, listen, they are outperforming what they could or should be doing with all the
injuries. Once again, you have more than half of your starting rotation on the injured list.
You've got two starts out of Blake's now. That is huge. That is a massive issue for this
team that you only got two starts out of your biggest, your highest profile free agent addition
in the off season. Glass now also, what, five starts in there. I like a lot of what Bill told
us, by the way. That was a fun interview with him.
But, yeah, I mean, it's a B plus, and I put a lot of the heavy lifting on this project on Dave Roberts.
People, listen, I'm not over here glazing up Dave because we had wine with him.
He's doing a really kick-ass job.
He's doing a really kick-ass job, making a lot of the right moves at the right time, pinch-hitting dudes in the right spot.
We saw it last night.
People up in arms about Hesson Kim, who had two hits, getting pinch hit, having Miggy Row enter the game there.
But Migy-Roe goes and has a hit, lays down a nice sacrifice bunt to put a runner in scoring position.
And he set up ultimately Mookie or Shohay being walked,
Mookie getting his moment to be like,
yeah, F you guys for, you know, intentionally walking Shohay
and all that kind of stuff.
But Dave has, he's been in the zone.
He's free.
He's happy.
He's easy.
He's in the pocket.
And I think he's, if managers had wins above replacement,
he's probably had about three wins above replacement right now.
So, Dave, be my friend more.
Maybe it was a little place.
Yeah.
I was going to say, man, you're really loving on.
Dave Roberts, which I get it.
I will never question any move that.
You know?
That's the problem.
I, you're basically loving the buttons that Dave Roberts is pushing.
All right.
So you are not doing your show tonight, correct?
Or are you?
Not tonight, but I will be live.
Saturday morning.
Let's have some coffee.
People, let's hang out probably 11 a.m.
Pacific time.
And we'll do that.
You know, it'll be fun.
