Starting point is 00:00:00 I'm Daniel Alarcon, and this is my friend. This is much more famous than I am. I wouldn't go that far, but I'm John Green, co-host at the podcast The Away End, with my old friend Daniel. On our podcast, The Away End, we'll share with you the magic of international football, all leading up to the 2026 World Cup. Together, we'll find out why, of all the unimportant things, football, soccer, is the most important. Listen to the Away End with Daniel Alarcon and John Green on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Then she says, have you seen a photo of my son? And I'm like, who is this person?
Starting point is 00:00:36 Welcome to the Boys and Girls podcast. Arranged Marriage is basically a reality show and you're auditioning for your soulmate. And who's judging? Only your entire family? I sacrificed myself to this ancient tradition, hoping to find love the right way. And instead, I found chaos, comedy and a lot of cringe.
Starting point is 00:00:56 Listen to Boys and Girls on the I Heart Radio app, Apple Podcast. or wherever you get your podcast. The more you listen to your kids, the closer you'll be. So we asked kids, what do you want your parents to hear? I feel sometimes that I'm not listened to. I would just want you to listen to me more often and evaluate situations with me and lead me towards success.
Starting point is 00:01:19 Listening is a form of love. Find resources to help you support your kids and their emotional well-being at soundedouttogether.org. That's sounded outtogether.org. Brought to you by the Ad Council and Pivotal. And I think what we've done a good job of, we signed some new guys. We've kept the vibe up, the buzz up.
Starting point is 00:01:37 And that's what I've felt so far just being here for a week. Everybody's excited. Everyone's ready to go. And welcome to a brand new episode of Dodgers territory on this fine Monday. It is full squad report day. Everybody is there. It is exciting. I'm Alana Rizzo.
Starting point is 00:02:05 That is Clint Pesias. We are excited to have Danny Lehman, Dodgers bench coach joining us momentarily. Don't forget guys to rate us five stars, subscribe, like Dodgers territory. We are trying to get to 20,000 subs. We appreciate you guys being here. So get your comments in the chat. If you have any questions for Danny in particular, now is the time to ask.
Starting point is 00:02:27 Clint, great to be with you as you and I get ready to head to Camelback Ranch momentarily. But before we head there, let's welcome in Danny Lehman, who of course is already at Camelback Ranch, the World Series champion Dodgers bench coach. Danny, great to see you. Great to be with you. Thanks for taking the time to be with us. I have my first question and I thought about this for a couple of weeks since we had Miguel Rojas on foul territory. He mentioned that during the World Series, of course, game seven, he's in the on deck circle, right? He obviously looks over to the dugout looking for you. When you were not to be found in your primary spot, he said, hey, I'm actually going to get this at bat.
Starting point is 00:03:08 He said, listen, I have been pitch hit for many times in my career. I believe he said hundreds, but he knew he was getting the at bat because you weren't in your spot. I would like to know your perspective of that kind of where you were in terms of that equation and that moment for this club. Yeah, no, that's a good starting point, I guess. But I mean, the game, I tell everybody this, like the game was such a blur with everything that was going on and that was such a big moment.
Starting point is 00:03:37 But yeah, just that the ninth inning in general with Miguel, like, I kind of take that as like, you know, I didn't have him prepared. I didn't have him ready to go because I knew he was going to hit. He started the game. Like, we want him to hit. He was in the lineup that day because he was the right choice. Obviously, you saw how it played out. But in that instance, usually I can try to get to the guys a little bit earlier, ease their
Starting point is 00:04:01 minds on what's going on, who's pitching, what we're going to do, kind of give him a heads up and I didn't. I just, you know, I was fully committed to it and usually I'm on the top step kind of, you know, directing as much as I can and making sure that they don't, they aren't confused on anything. And in that point, I'm glad he wasn't. But yeah, I wasn't, I wasn't where I was usually at the top step, but it was pretty incredible for Miguel. Yeah, incredible moment for him, incredible series for everybody involved. Here you are. You at the start of a new camp, trying to run it back for a third. third time and you know how do you keep the momentum kind of going early in camp when these dudes
Starting point is 00:04:42 just laid everything on the line in that seven game series you guys included i i'm i can just imagine doc just like all the coaches just falling on your ass after that like just staring at the ceiling for a little bit to breathing exhaling after that series what what's sort of the messaging i don't know if doc has uh you know kind of uh given his address to the team yet but what's sort of messaging and saying like, hey, that was then. Let's keep it going now. Yeah, no, that's definitely the sentiment here. It's, you know, we haven't done our meeting yet. Guys just reported today. So we'll see what he comes at the team with tomorrow. But that's kind of been the sentiment with us because over the last couple of years and everybody knows, like, we've
Starting point is 00:05:22 had really short off seasons. And, you know, two years ago or, you know, three springs now, going to Korea and that was a short off season, playing deep in 24 and then 25, we're going to Japan to start the season, then obviously playing into November last year. And then this year we're back a little bit early for the WBC, but our offseason have been quick. And I think as a collective, we've kind of realized that we need to kind of take a breath, relax as much as we can these past couple months. And then when it, you know, when tomorrow comes, tomorrow, be ready to go and feel the energy. And I think what we've done a good job of, we've signed some new guys. We've kept the vibe up, the buzz up. And that's what I've felt so far,
Starting point is 00:06:04 being here for a week is everybody's excited. Everyone's ready to go. There's no sense of, you know, complacency or guys being tired. And it's still early. You guys know how it is at the beginning of camp. Everyone's excited. It's a new year. You see some new faces. But that's kind of where we're at right now. The thing is with camp, you just mentioned it, everyone's excited, the new faces. But this is a team, everybody, all 30, Danny, as you know better than anybody say, like, yeah, we want the goal is to win a World Series. The difference is there's probably a 10% of the teams can legitimately do it. What is it about this one, obviously? It's not a reloading. It's not a rebuilding. It's just an expectation. The Dodgers don't win the World Series this year because
Starting point is 00:06:45 Yeah, I mean, obviously you can say health number one, right? We have a great roster and we've added to it. But over the past couple of years, like keeping guys specifically pitchers healthy, that's the easy answer because that's kind of how it is with us. But I think if we stay healthy, we have a very, very good chance that if guys continue to, I know we're going to get some guys back once we get into the season with Tommy and, you know, obviously Kike and Brock Stewart, Evan Phillips. Like, we have some guys that need to get back on the field that we want back on the field as quickly as possible. But it goes back into, you know, the last question. It's like when we have these short off seasons and you don't really know how guys will respond to that and you kind of have to do
Starting point is 00:07:27 your best as an organization as a staff to kind of mitigate what you can on the workload and all that stuff. So I think being healthy, easy answer, obviously, but it's the truth. You mentioned Tommy Edmund there. We got the update a little bit ago. As expected, I've been expecting he's not going to be ready for opening day. Help people understand who are watching this. Like why the rest of the season is a lot more important than, you know, I guess the kind of a pageantry of a meaningless day, you know, late in March. that's a lot less important than having it ready to go for when he's back in, 130 games and then into the postseason.
Starting point is 00:08:05 Yeah, I think, you know, if you talk to Tommy, I think he'd say the same thing. I don't think it's necessarily about playing every single day. It's getting back to where he's healthy and he's 100% of what, you know, what he is and how he can play. Because I don't think people understand what he went through last year playing and the injuries and just not being 100% and how that takes a toll and what he did to actually get back on the field
Starting point is 00:08:26 and help us win. I think guys, you know, not just Tommy, but guys get tired of not being at their best and being out there to compete because the game is so hard right now that physically you have to be as high as you can be to compete and, you know, succeed. So I think Tommy's at that,
Starting point is 00:08:44 and I think we're fully on board with making sure that he feels good about himself and we feel good about where he's at so he can go out and give us the Tommy that everyone expects. Danny, I think a lot of people realize a bench coach, your second in command when it comes to this team. Of course, if Doc gets a little crazy, gets ejected,
Starting point is 00:09:01 everyone's looking to you. But what exactly are the primary roles of a bench coach? And Craig Osterberg, 007, wants to know. What advice do you give to Dave Roberts? What are your primary responsibilities and how do you guys work as a tandem? Yeah, it's a good question. I get that a lot, but I think for my role specifically,
Starting point is 00:09:20 you know, I have to kind of cover both sides of the ball and everything. And so we start before the game. We have a ton of meetings. And Alana, you even around so you understand kind of how we do it. We try to get on the same page before and talk about as much as we can about situations that might come up. And I think that's kind of like my main task throughout the game is to make sure like we have things covered before they happen, whether that be, you know, pinch hitting, defensively, base running. Obviously the pitching matchups are probably the biggest thing that you can control within the game.
Starting point is 00:09:51 And so that's kind of my number one priority is making sure that, that I kind of do my best to look ahead and foresee things that are going to happen and put them in a good spot to make that decisions, kind of come out with outcomes. So short answer, that's kind of the main deal. Hey, one thing you'll have to be keeping an eye on this season is the ABS coming to the league, coming to major league baseball. What kind of changes does that make for you, for the staff? And, you know, I know a lot of fans wonder, like, are there any players that they got a red light on hitting the old helmet there?
Starting point is 00:10:24 How do you figure the Dodgers will implement ABS this season? You know, TBD, right? I think we had it last year in spring training. I think it's great for just in spring training the short time that we had it. But as far as like tactically how we do it, I don't know how it's going to play out, to be honest with you. I think we're going to be as smart as we can with it and give guys who have, you know, experience with it, number one. But also everyone has to learn it. And so I think just kind of the growing pains in spring training and guys learning, you know, maybe they're off, maybe they're a little bit emotional with their decision because obviously that comes in.
Starting point is 00:11:01 But I think it's going to be a lot of fun. You know, it's going to change a lot of part of the later end of the game where, you know, some people may say, you know, the game changed on this pitch or, you know, this outcome happened because of this pitch. I think we're going to be able to, you know, at least reverse that or fact check it or whatever we want to go about it. But I think it's going to be really good. It's going to be fun. and it's really exciting for the fans. Just in spring training last year, watching it play out when they put it up on the jumbo-tron and all that,
Starting point is 00:11:27 it's pretty cool. Even in the dugout, honestly, watching us, we're like, man, what is it? Is it going to, you know, how, is he right? Is he way off? And so it'll be fun. I think it'll be good. I think it'll be good for the game.
Starting point is 00:11:39 You mentioned, is he right? Is he way off? Which leads me to the whole challenges, not just ABS, but just challenges in general. I mean, how much do you guys, you know, obviously we have a great, I say we like, I'm still there. I kind of wish, obviously, that I was,
Starting point is 00:11:53 but a great video department and obviously people that you guys rely on heavily, what goes into that? There's a call on the field that is a challengeable call. Take us through what goes into that between you and Doc and the video, the video coordinator and all of those things. Yeah, no, it's actually pretty fun.
Starting point is 00:12:11 And ultimately, like when it first happens, that's another thing, I jump off and they usually try to hit Doc to make sure he puts his hand up, because we got in a couple, you know, with the pitch clock and how trying to keep the game moving, like if you don't put your hand up, you don't get to challenge. So that's, you know, the first thing. And then I run to the phone.
Starting point is 00:12:27 And I call our video department, which is Jonathan Rhymes. It does a great job. And I think, number one, like knowing the rules of the game, both him and I and obviously Bob Gearing on the bench next to me, knowing that and what we can challenge, what we can't challenge in the situation of the game. And then ultimately after that, it's up to Jonathan on the phone. And so I kind of try to keep it loose with him a little bit in certain times. just to make sure because, and then other times I'm just kind of making sure he knows what the,
Starting point is 00:12:55 what the clock is, because we have, you know, 15 seconds to make a decision. We go back and forth real quickly within those 10 to 12 seconds or whatever it is getting on the phone. We kind of take a look at the game situation. Is it later in the, you know, later in the game, I mean like the five, six, seventh inning to where if we challenge, we don't get it back. After the seventh, obviously we can go into the crew chief review. And so we don't really lose our challenge we can challenge something else even if we don't win that challenge specifically so it's really early in the game to make sure like it makes sense within the play of the game is it a run scoring play is there nobody out is
Starting point is 00:13:33 there two outs and you know the guy's trying to beat out a bunt or an infield single or something like that is that worth the challenge depending on if it's a 50-50 or a 60 40 call from Jonathan so he does a great job I think sometimes we'll challenge just a challenge because at times you know, you don't get to, you don't get to take them home with you after the game. But for the most part, I think we try to make it make sense and have it be worthwhile. Shipping back to kind of the player side of things, the roster side of things. You know, it's Andrew and Brandon's, I guess it keeps them up at night.
Starting point is 00:14:08 How do you keep building on a team that is the best in baseball that just won a World Series and all of that? You got some big pieces. Kyle Tucker added, Edwin Diaz added. but what I am always really into is the clubhouse dynamic and the kind of, they're not even unsung heroes, but those important dudes that aren't making the millions of dollars, the billions of dollars like some of these guys are making. To that, I'll ask, how important was it? You guys start and end your offseason, re-signing Miguel Rojas, re-signing Kike Hernandez, the intangibles that they bring to a clubhouse.
Starting point is 00:14:47 Obviously, what they do on the field, we all see. but what they bring to clubhouse cohesion and, you know, boys being boys over 180 days and whatever it ends up being. Just tell people a little bit more about what they bring to the mix. Yeah, that's, you know, honestly, it's hard to articulate, to be honest with you, because what Kiki does in the clubhouse on the field,
Starting point is 00:15:09 off the field, the leadership, you know, I've been with Kiki since 2015, I think, and obviously he left for a little bit, but we have a great relationship and how he's grown and what he does on and off the field is second to not, obviously, and Miggie's right behind him on that. I mean, we have a lot of other guys. Freddy's incredible in the clubhouse.
Starting point is 00:15:28 Teo is awesome in the clubhouse. Like, we have a really good dynamic and culture, and I know that's, you know, the buzzword, but those two guys drive it for sure, Kike and Miggie Rowe. And it's on both sides of ball. It's not just with position players. Like they include everyone, you know, nobody's safe with those guys, including the staff. So it's great. Like the camaraderie with it and over the course of the season, you know, 180 games.
Starting point is 00:15:52 Sorry about the lights just came off. But, you know, they're awesome. And there's a reason that they keep, you know, we want them back, you know. And we want them back up and down, you know, the organization, the front office, the field staff, the players. Like, everybody wants them back. So I think that's, you know, that's a telltale about how good they've been for the club. And you can see and, you know, just interviews with them and off the field and you see what they do on the field. Like they have fun.
Starting point is 00:16:18 They love the game and that's huge part of it. And they love everything that comes with it. Danny, I know you've got to get to some meetings. Obviously a lot going on there today as full squad reports. Before I let you go, I have one final question. You continue to grow in your career. You can continue to grow in this game and in your role. There's some teams that want Danny Lehman as their manager,
Starting point is 00:16:38 but yet you have chosen to stay with the Los Angeles Dodgers. I would imagine, like all of us that are goal-oriented, perhaps that is a goal you want at some point. Why did you decide to stay? Yeah, I think there's a lot of different ways to look at for me, but I think just staying on the baseball side, like there's no better place to be. And I truly believe that.
Starting point is 00:16:57 I think what our front office does to keep our team competitive, to reinvest in the team, the fans, the city, but ultimately like the people within the organization. You know, I talk to this with my wife, you know, daily at times. And even for the family side of it, It's second to none. So, you know, I don't have anything but great things to say about the organization, and I like to win, and I like to be able to compete, you know, and not everybody can say that
Starting point is 00:17:25 that they can go to work and be expected to win, expected to contribute and bring some value to the team. And that's how it is here. And so I think for me, it's more of waiting for the opportunity overall, but I'm not necessarily in a hurry to do that, right, to be able to lead a team. And obviously, everybody's been great to me, and Dave's been awesome to me here. and I feel like I can contribute and add value. And so I don't know if there's a better place to wake up every day and go to work than right here.
Starting point is 00:17:52 So it's tough to compete with. Somebody just said it in the chat right now. Danny wants more rings. You've got to fill up that hand with rings. That's also a pretty nice perk of being around in Dodge Blue. Danny, we know you're busy. You've got some stuff ahead of you. We appreciate you hanging out with us.
Starting point is 00:18:08 We'll see you at Camelback Ranch and we're out there in a couple of days. But thanks again for the time. Yeah, no problem. anytime guys look forward to talking to you guys again. All right, Danny, thanks so much. All right. Hey, there is. We got a little bit of housekeeping to do.
Starting point is 00:18:21 We're going to hear from our friends at Fowel Territory. Then we will be back. So everybody, be patient. All right. We got the Warby Parkers. I got the Raiders. But one thing I upgraded to, polarized. Sorry about it.
Starting point is 00:18:35 Yeah, these are good. Not only for wearing, but also out in the sun. When I become that baseball coach, I always want to be with my kids. I got the hatchers. They're darker, a little bit wider for my face. They fit perfect. They're comfortable. It's an easy process to order these really, really cool glasses.
Starting point is 00:18:51 I am a diehard Warby Parker fan. I do have prescription glasses, and I wear Warby Parker every day for many years. I'm excited about this one. Give it a shot. Warby Parker gives you quality and better-looking prescription eyewear at a fraction of the going price. Our listeners get 15% off plus free shipping when they buy two or more pairs of prescription glasses at Warby Parker.com slash foul. That's 15% off when you buy two pairs of glasses
Starting point is 00:19:16 at W-A-R-B-Y-Parker.com slash F-O-U-L. After you purchase, they will ask you where you heard about them. Please support our show and tell them foul territory sent you. I'm John Green. You may know me as the author of The Fault and Our Stars, and now I guess also is the co-host of the Away End, a brand-new World Soccer podcast. I'm Daniel Alarcon, a writer and journalist,
Starting point is 00:19:39 and John and I have known each other since we were kids. My first World Cup was Mexico 86. I was nine years old. I watched every game and I fell in love. On our new podcast, The Away End, we'll share with you the magic of international football, all leading up to the 2026 World Cup. For us, soccer, football, is a story we've shared for over 30 years since Daniel was the star player on our high school soccer team.
Starting point is 00:20:02 Very debatable. And I was their most loyal and sometimes only fan. I love this game. I love its history, it's hope, it's hard. heartbreak, and above all, it's beauty. Together, we'll find out why, of all the unimportant things, football, soccer, is the most important. Listen to the away end with Daniel Auerkone and John Green on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. I love Warby Parker.
Starting point is 00:20:37 And by the way, those shades that Eric Croutts had on need immediately. Stat. Need him, need him, need him. Thank you so much to Danny Lehman for coming on the show. We appreciate him. Love the dude. I've known him for a long time. obviously a very bright guy and always very, very accommodating.
Starting point is 00:20:52 All right. So behind the seams as we get into this, everyone's talking about the Dodgers and you got to love it. The big stars of the game, right? So let's start with Manny Machado of the friars. He effing loves it, apparently, the way that the Dodgers are spending. Yeah, this is definitely the time where media is going to be asking the players, hey, what do you think about this? You know, you got a chance against these powerhouse $400 billion.
Starting point is 00:21:18 Dodgers. And is it bad for baseball? The question that is overused? Well, they got some opinions. And I love what we're hearing. Listen, you're not going to hear me say, I love and Manny Machado often in the same sentence. But I love what Manny Machado had to say.
Starting point is 00:21:35 Let's go ahead and play what happens. If you don't want F-bombs, guys, cover your ears. But this is the raw version of Manny. You have to see, you're in the same division, what the Dodgers are doing to spend that kind of money or kind of used to it by now. I fucking love it. I love it. I mean, honestly, I think every team should be doing it. You know, they figured out a way to do it and shit is fucking great for the game, honestly.
Starting point is 00:21:59 So I think every team, every team has the ability to do it. So, you know, I hope, you know, all 30 teams could learn from that. He added that, let's say he added that, you know, Peter Seidler, of course, the owner, the former owner of the Padres who passed away, Peter was building something like that. at in San Diego as well. He was spending money, putting his money where his mouth is to try to put the best product on the field. So Mani Machado, obviously, there's some riffs. There's some hit and miss with his relationship with the Los Angeles Dodgers since no longer donning the blue. But listen, if players are telling you, they like what's going on, I kind of read something into that.
Starting point is 00:22:41 I mean, he's not the only one. I mean, he's a superstar in this game, right? Mani Machado, whether he's polarizing or not, he is a superstar and he garners. attention, good or bad, whatever side of the fence you are on with Machado, but he is absolutely spot on. Bryce Harper, another one, who I would run, and I've said this before, I would run through a wall from Bryce Harper. I love the way he goes about his business. I love his work ethic. I love his hustle. He has embraced Philadelphia like nobody else has. I mean, he knows exactly what that fan base is. He loves it too. You know what? He's a winner and he wants to win and he wants to win. said the exact same thing just in a little bit of a different way.
Starting point is 00:23:22 Thanks, Paul. Yeah, no, I mean, I love what the Dodgers do, obviously. I mean, they pay the money, they spend the money. I mean, they're a great team. They understand how to run it. They run their team like a business, and they run it the right way. They understand where they need to put their money into, but also, people don't look at this either.
Starting point is 00:23:35 Their draft and their draft and their development is unbelievable. Like, they draft and they develop, and then they trade those guys from big name guys and they can spend the money. So it's, I don't know. It bothers me when everybody talks about the Dodgers are spending money. No, they draft, they develop, they do it the right way. They understand what it's. six to be the best team in baseball.
Starting point is 00:23:50 And you've seen that the last two years. They have so much depth. I mean, I think it was Will Klein, the kid's name was, came in it through six shutout innings. Like, I mean, you were sitting in Arizona two weeks before. Like, they have that type of dynamic on their club. And that's what you, when you think about drafting, developing, and things like that, that's why they win.
Starting point is 00:24:07 And that's why they win a lot of games each year. So, you know, I love what they do. I understand what they do. I understand the madness behind it. But again, like, each team in baseball has an opportunity to do the same. the same thing. Maybe not at the FROFs an echelon of money, but they can draft, they can develop, they can trade, and
Starting point is 00:24:25 you know, I just, I don't know, I think a lot of teams can do that in baseball and they should. Great points made by both players. The game is making a lot of money. Every team can do this to some degree, and for the people, by the way, on the Dodgers side of things, you know, Brandon Goams was asked to share his opinions of what those players had to say. And for the Dodgers, validation comes in winning,
Starting point is 00:24:48 titles, which the Dodgers do very good job at, you know, keeping that tunnel vision about the goal, not about what outside noise is and the whole, you know, we know they got a target on their back. But I love this. And for the for the people who say a lockout is coming and it's going to get ugly, you know, I don't think they're going to like hearing this. I'll tell you that much. It kills the narrative. It does kill the narrative. And I do believe that there will be a lockout. I don't know how long that's going to last. I mean, it's almost imminent that's going to happen. Just because, God forbid, we just get at the table and work through things without locking it out when the team or the sport is in is on the rise and people are paying attention now more than ever.
Starting point is 00:25:34 But sure, what a way to grow the sport. It's like shutting down the government. Let's just keep doing that. Sure, it's fine. Makes a lot of darn sense. But you know what? There's not going to be a salary cap because the owners are just not going to or the players are just not going to stand for it. The union won't stand for it. And you know what? If I'm the Dodgers, it's like, and we've said this, I'm kind of, I'm just sick of talking about it. Enough. Like every team can spend money. They choose not to. And that's it. And Bryce Harper makes a really good point. I mean, and for him to even know who Will Klein is, you know what I mean? It's like you're paying attention. These guys are paying attention. And there's not a single person on a major league roster,
Starting point is 00:26:10 at least I hope not. That doesn't want to compete and isn't a competitive person and doesn't want to win unless your name is like Anthony Rendon, but he's not on a major league roster anymore. So there you have it. I don't know. I tell you what, if there's a lockout Clint, though, it's not going to be because of the players. That I can promise. A hundred percent. It's not going to be because of the players. And, you know, the other thing is we talk about a salary cap. And with that comes a salary floor. It has to. These team owners aren't going to go for a salary for many shared his thoughts on a salary cap. This
Starting point is 00:26:44 Annie Helbrun who covers the team, I think, for the local radio station there, 971. He said, I think there should not be a cap. I think her game is very good at what we're doing. They're making a lot of money. You know, look at what's been going on in the game the last five years. You see the World Series This is not him saying. You see the World Series viewing. It keeps going up
Starting point is 00:27:02 and up. You know, teams can do what the Dodgers are doing. It's a matter if they want to do it or not. And these owners Artie Moreno is one of those, Dick Montfort to a degree, whoever I can't remember who owns the Pirates. You know, this is a side hustle for them. This is them making some money and owning a team. If there's a lockout, when there's a lockout, like you said, it won't be because of the players.
Starting point is 00:27:26 Team owners are going to sign off on it. Some of them reluctantly. It's going to be the league. The league is going to push for this lockout. It's going to push for players to make. less money to have less ability to earn. And in my opinion, we got a couple more years of Rob Manfred. This would be the last final, just awful stain on his tenure as the commissioner of baseball. And it's going to get ugly when it doesn't need to. I'll tell you that much, Riz.
Starting point is 00:27:58 It doesn't need, I mean, we don't need another lockout. We just had a flipping lockout. You know, it's like, it's just so, it's so sad. I mean, to me, it's just greed. It's just it's silliness. I just get so tired of it. What bothers me the most about the lockout, like the players are going to be fine, right? Ultimately the players will be fine. Even the guys making Major League minimum will be fine.
Starting point is 00:28:23 The owners certainly will be fine, okay? What bothers me is all of the people that, you know, the concession folks and the security guards and all of the people that are just like normal folks. And you know what? It affects us too. If there is no baseball, we don't have shows, right? Like we don't.
Starting point is 00:28:38 Again, I'm not putting myself in the category of somebody that- Think about us. No, like raising a family and has kids and like, you know, like this is their livelihood. Every single person that is involved in a major league baseball game from the tippy top all the way down, every level of it, it's going to impact these players. And it's unfortunate because the game is great. The popularity of it is great. They're making a billion, gazillion dollars.
Starting point is 00:29:06 It's unfortunate. All right. Much more to come on Dodgers territory first, though. Buy our stuff so we can keep our jobs. That would be really great if you could do that. See, we're talking about keeping our jobs. Dodgers Territory Shop, guys, that's where it is. Consider supporting the show with some sweet swag.
Starting point is 00:29:23 Dodgers Territory Shop.com. You can scan the QR code. You can go to that link. You can do all the things. A hoodie, a mug, a duffel bag, whatever it is that you would like to do. We certainly thank you so much for your support. And speaking of support, Clint, there is a super chat on here that I'm so appreciative of because it's a $20 super chat. And it is in regards to the Puppers.
Starting point is 00:29:45 Thank you, Nancy Brown, 6375. 20 bucks. Thank you, Alana. And all of us here at Daughter's Territory for the Work for Dogs. Heck yeah, man. That's important. And speaking of that, let's get to last looks. I'm John Green.
Starting point is 00:30:00 You may know me as the author of The Fault and Our Stars. And now, I guess, also is the co-host of The Away End, a brand new. World Soccer podcast. I'm Daniel Alarcon, a writer and journalist, and John and I have known each other since we were kids. My first World Cup was Mexico 86. I was nine years old. I watched every game, and I fell in love. On our new podcast, the away end, we'll share with you the magic of international football, all leading up to the 2026 World Cup. For us, soccer, football, is a story we've shared for over 30 years since Daniel was the star player on our high school soccer team. Very debatable. and I was their most loyal and sometimes only fan.
Starting point is 00:30:39 I love this game. I love its history, it's hope, it's heartbreak, and above all, it's beauty. Together, we'll find out why, of all the unimportant things, football, soccer, is the most important. Listen to the away end with Daniel Auer Kohn and John Green on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. The more you listen to your kids, the closer you'll be. kids, what do you want your parents to hear? I feel sometimes that I'm not listened to. I would just want you to listen to me more often
Starting point is 00:31:12 and evaluate situations with me and lead me towards success. Listening is a form of love. Find resources to help you support your kids and their emotional well-being at soundedouttogether.org. That's sounded outtogether.org. Brought to you by the Ad Council and Pivotal. Today, Clint. It doesn't want to do it.
Starting point is 00:31:34 I'm pushing the button. It said no. Now here we go. Wow. All right. So this is Havana, Unana. And I'm going to continue to network Havana until this sweet baby gets a home. She came into our foundation a few months back. She was emaciated.
Starting point is 00:31:54 She was starving. In fact, she ran into our VP's house completely coincidentally. My VP, who was also my best friend, her husband was walking their dog. And this little pup ran behind her husband. and their dog and ran into their house, like basically begging for help. She is super healthy now. She is the weight that she's supposed to be. She's in training.
Starting point is 00:32:17 She is spayed. She is vaccinated. She's great with other dogs. She would do really, really well with a dog that matches her energy. She's about a year and a half old, so she's still very much puppy. So if you have another dog that could, you know, kind of guide her and show her the ropes, that would be awesome. She's being fostered in La Habra, California right now, and she needs a forever home.
Starting point is 00:32:37 So check out Havana. Baseball thought for the road, Clint Paseas, my friend. I'm excited to see you in Arizona, but I'm more excited to see the players. Yeah, I would definitely. I'm not excited. I'm most excited. Who are you most excited to see throw, and who are you most excited to talk to? You know, I want to see them all throw.
Starting point is 00:33:00 I love getting that awkward, frightening angle just behind a catcher where they're throwing at your head. I want to see Yamamoto. I really do. I don't think we're going to get an interview with Yamamoto. We don't know the language. We're not very good at speaking Japanese. I would love to talk to them and just ask how everything is doing. And also tell them, thank you, thank you for everything you did,
Starting point is 00:33:22 literally putting this team on your right shoulder last year. But watching Yamamoto throw also kind of getting eyes close because we have not, we weren't, well, Chohay wasn't throwing with the same amount of intensity at the time we were there last year. So to kind of really get eyes on Show Hay will be pretty fun. In terms of somebody to talk to, I was thinking about this. He was our first guest here on Dodgers Territory way, way back when right after signing that contract extension, William Dill Smith. I want to get his pulse of just where he's at. And now he has a World Series Homer under his belt.
Starting point is 00:33:59 And he's in the conversation as a top two, three, best catcher in baseball, if not the best catcher. baseball just kind of checking in on on where willie deals is at up here in his old noggin a little curious about that yeah justin jason jason yamas number one says in terms of who he'd like to to talk to kyle tucker his pitcher would be edwin dyes yeah i would like to see edwin dyes i actually and for a different reason i want to see alex vessia throw and uh i know he faced hitters yesterday i think he struck out show hey which was kind of funny uh and he had a you know excited glee um i want to give him a hug and I probably won't because he doesn't know me at all. And I think that would just be weird
Starting point is 00:34:39 if I just walked up to him and gave him a hug. I'm excited to just be there and see everybody. So Alex Vesia, I would like to see, of course, Shohei, Yama, Edwin, of course, and talking to everybody. I can't wait to see Miguel. I can't wait to see Kike. I can't wait to see Tey Oscar. I can't wait to see everybody. So basically the entire roster is my answer. I think that's a cheater of an answer, but we'll take it. One final super chat before we signed out from either Gabriel or Gabriel, $5 super chat. We appreciate you. This is love what you two are doing on Dodgers territory.
Starting point is 00:35:18 Keep up the hard work and the side note, Alana. Love your work helping out the dogs. It's $5 super chat. We appreciate you guys. We definitely would not be doing the show without you. Thank you for making us one of the Dodgers shows here on the Internet. Next time you see us, I don't know. We got to figure that one out.
Starting point is 00:35:36 Definitely, we will be with Doc. It'll be Thursday. We're doing it. From there, I don't know. Listen, man. I barely know what day of the week it is. But anyway, we'll be back on Thursday. I'm assuming it'll be all three of us, Katie,
Starting point is 00:35:49 who obviously is already at Camel Reck Ranch, will be on. And then we'll have a sit down with Doc exclusive on Friday. That will be live on our channel. And then Clint and I are going to be getting a bunch of interviews with the guys that will air in future shows, too. So thank you guys for being here. We appreciate you very much.
Starting point is 00:36:05 Keep in touch. Subscribe to the channel so you know when we're coming on. Okay. We'll be back. Best way to do it. Okay. Bye. I'm Daniel Alarcon, and this is my friend. It's much more famous than I am. I wouldn't go that far. But I'm John Green. Co-host of the podcast The Away End with my old friend Daniel.
Starting point is 00:36:33 On our podcast, The Away End, we'll share with you the magic of international football, all leading up to the 2026 World Cup. Only your entire family? I sacrificed myself to this ancient tradition, hoping to find love the right way. And instead, I found chaos, comedy, and a lot of cringe.
Starting point is 00:37:20 Listen to boys and girls on the Iheart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Hey, it's Alec Baldwin. This season on my podcast, Here's the Thing. I talked to composer Mark Shaman. It's about the hang. It's the pleasure of hanging out with the people that you're with. You know, Rob and I was always a great hang. And journalist Chris Whipple.
