Starting point is 00:02:55 Scott Akisaki, the Dodgers Traveling Secretary, will be joining us momentarily as a method of a palette cleanse because we have a lot of garbage in our mouth right now because of the recent road trip. we get to Scott Akasaki and what it entails being a traveling secretary for a major league baseball team. Let's get to the big ticket. Let's do it. I tell you what, you said it best when we had our conversation earlier today. Clint, the Dodgers won one game on that road trip, and it felt like 10. Yeah. That was a much needed win on Sunday afternoon coming out of Baltimore. Show Hey Otani puts the team on his back. Miguel Rojas continues to be a really good table center just overall over the weekend.
Starting point is 00:03:44 Mookie Betts is back to being the mooky bets we know and love while playing an exceptional shortstop. I want to shout out Ben Roort Vet for being kind of not bad while filling in for the injured catchers, which I did blame you for putting it into the ethos that perhaps seem confused. I didn't put it into the ethos. It's just, it's just, it's obby, duh. It's obvious. When you have Will Smith get hurt and then you see Dalton rushing foul a couple balls off of his body parts, you're just thinking to yourself, who is going to be the backup catcher if, in fact,
Starting point is 00:04:18 both of these guys go down. Enter Ben Rortvet. I had never heard of the kid, and that's on me because I don't follow the minor leagues as closely as you do. But it just harkens back to the day of, did we need to let Austin Barnes go? Did we need to? I mean, I don't care if Austin Barnes, the real A-B, was, you know, hitting, you know, 220. I like what he can do behind the plate. But that's neither here nor there.
Starting point is 00:04:43 It doesn't matter. Austin Barnes isn't on this team anymore. Ben, Rort Vett, good job. I was trying to put it into the ethos, but it wasn't that far-fetched, obviously. You know, also, I mean, you got a shout out this front office, Andrew Friedman and Brandon Gomes for some of the trades they made at the trade. trade deadline. Yeah, a lot of us wish the splashes would have been larger, but this dude kind of be in some sort of random edition while they, I think he came in the, um, the Hunter
Starting point is 00:05:12 fiduciusia trade or whatever the trade was, but nobody had this dude, you know, Ben Roart Vett along with, um, Paul Jervais or whatever, just some weird names that you've never heard of for sure, kind of being organizational fillers, all of a sudden, this kid is playing a role, a kind of important role. And he caught some pretty good. baseball over the weekend, by the way. Starting pitching was very good for this team as it continues to be Shohei Otani, solid after being pressed into duty because Tyler Glass and I was unable to answer the bell on Friday. Of course, yesterday, our hero, Clayton Kirschau, plays a stopper once again, as he's done so many times in his Hall of Fame career. Ten wins
Starting point is 00:05:54 on the season now. And yeah, all right, there's all of that out of the way. Yoshinobu Yamamoto, Oh, my God, eight and two thirds. No hit baseball. Then Jackson Holiday happened. We all experienced it. We all lived it together in our own way. Riz, what are your thoughts about that Saturday game? And how's your heart today still?
Starting point is 00:06:15 I mean, my heart did hurt. And I know that you said that that was rock bottom. And maybe it was. And maybe sometimes you have to hit rock bottom because the only way to go is up, correct? Yeah, my heart hurts because how in the world? I've never seen that before. At least I thought I hadn't seen it before. a team that's getting no hit, eight and two thirds innings, and then they turn around and win the game.
Starting point is 00:06:34 And of course, a lot of folks, because, you know, the internet is a wonderful thing, a lot of folks reminded me that I was actually in Pittsburgh when I watched Rich Hill throw a no hitter into the 10th inning. The Dodgers didn't score at all to give him any sort of run support. And then the Pittsburgh Pirates in Pittsburgh ended up walking off the Dodgers in the 10th inning. I do remember that because my memory was jogged by our wonderful fans and viewers, but that didn't. not hurt as much as what happened on Saturday night. And it was ironic too because Matt, or excuse me, Jackson holiday, I covered Matt and I covered Jackson, but whatever. Jackson Holiday and the holiday family asked the Ripkin family if he could wear number
Starting point is 00:07:16 seven. And the irony of what happened when Jackson broke up the no-no on Cal Ripkin Day, the 30th anniversary of 2131, it's just baseball rights itself, right? You can't make this stuff up. A couple of takeaways from that game that I will talk about when we lost on Saturday. My heart doesn't hurt as bad as it did, but it hurt really bad that day. Number one, Andy Paez, again, I don't know what it's like seeing a ball come flying off the bat like that in center field at Camden Yards. But what I can see is what looked like not much of an attempt to field that ball.
Starting point is 00:07:50 Maybe it was incredibly difficult. I don't know. I'm not saying he would have made it. But optically, it did not look like he made. that grade of an effort to field that baseball, especially since a no-hitter was going on, and especially since they had rattled off many, many losses coming into that game. And that's why I think, Clint, this loss hurt me more than the Rich Hill taking a no-hitter into the 10th and getting walked off by the pirates several years ago.
Starting point is 00:08:21 And the reason is coming into that series, I would imagine we hadn't lost five games going into that game, right? I don't remember that serious. It feels as badly as what this loss felt like. I felt like I got ticked right in the teeth, right in the throat. And as I usually say, like, I'm going to rip out your jugular. That's what I felt like. It just felt worse. It felt badly.
Starting point is 00:08:44 So Andy Pot has not making what was perceived a very good effort. The way that Yamamoto pitched eight and two thirds was unbelievable. Here's another thing I take away from this. And I know everybody was screaming that that. Dave should have left Yama in the game. I disagree. And the reason I disagree is because he was already at 112 pitches. That's a career high. Obviously, to keep the no-no intact, you let him ride it, right? You keep them out there. But once that no-hitter is no longer in play, you got to take him out. And you would think, for God's sake, you would think that your bullpen could get one freaking out.
Starting point is 00:09:24 So this isn't on date. This is a situation where. our bullpen is really struggling right now. And Trinan just did not have it, and Tanner hasn't had it for the majority of his time as a daughter. Yeah, we said when we're talking earlier today, I told you the every wheel on the car fell off, even the spare tire in the trunk, and there was stuff on top of that spare tire in the trunk.
Starting point is 00:09:48 Yeah, it was like a spare tire on a Jeep or a Bronco, like on the back. This was like everything is on top of your spare in your trunk and all that shit just got moved. And by the way, the Jackson Holiday Homer, some people were, I saw some people having some issue with Yamamoto's pitch. I mean, he dotted it. He hit it right. He threw that pitch right where the glove was and he had been on all day.
Starting point is 00:10:12 Just credit to the holiday for getting just enough of that pitch. Yeah, you would like to see a little bit more, even if it's performative effort at a Paez. It is what it is. At that point still, you had a chance to win the game. like you said Yamamoto pulling him in that point that's the right call for Dave and then yeah Blake Trinan plainly did not have it and I liked what Dave said after the fact this is a dude who has has pitched in every big moment for this team you got a ride and die with Trinan I question
Starting point is 00:10:41 the Tanner Scott decision there just because I mean if he loses it that's just more piling on his psyche and he's already struggling so much on the other hand like we talked about earlier I could understand you need to see what you have in this dude now before the postseason. So it was tough. Like I said, everything that could go wrong kind of went wrong. And then, yeah, it felt like rock bottom. Hopefully that was the lowest low point of the season for us for this team moving forward. They felt very positive coming into that Sunday game.
Starting point is 00:11:17 Thankfully, it translated into a win. one thing I want to talk about before we do a welcome Scott Akasaki who was watching me to say this this part of it and I'm going to complain about people online so Scott bear with me on that one but one of the things I had posted online while people were reacting or overreacting to the lost it was I will say it was satire it was a joke if you don't understand it's a joke I'm sorry
Starting point is 00:11:44 but jokingly I had tweeted sell the fucking team because Listen, my thought in that moment is like, what is the most absurd thing that I could think of to match the absurdity that I just watched on the field that I was like, ah, whatever, throw it out. People will understand it. Now, some of the mouth breathing, your reaction narks, I like to call them, reaction police, whatever, they had their opinions. And you know what? I hate these kind of people who you don't talk to them. You don't interact with them ever.
Starting point is 00:12:13 You see each other's posts on social media. You don't follow each other or whatever. but they take your tweet and then they quote tweet it or whatever and they spin it to something and as I know you know plenty about this kind of stuff but they tweet it to their following
Starting point is 00:12:29 of even worse mouth breathers who are like oh can you believe what this guy just said I can't believe that they have a platform anyways these people are the worst and I have a platform to tell you people to your face you are the worst kind of people on the internet the people who have to tell you
Starting point is 00:12:47 that, oh, you have a reaction, you have feelings, it doesn't match what I want to say, or it's so absurd that I'm going to tell my people, look at this idiot, it's a joke. It was a joke. It's absurd. Of course, I love the Guggenheim organization, the ownership. They're not paying me to say that. I remember Frank McCourt. I remember that era.
Starting point is 00:13:07 I remember living through Fox. Things were tough. The Dodgers have it great. They always have it great. But, Riz, as you said, coming out of this stretch with all the things. things that were kind of going wrong. Needed that win and it was painful and it sucked, but it was a joke and these people are the worst.
Starting point is 00:13:24 I'm glad you got that off your chest. Welcome to Clint Paseas' TED Talk. All right. We're going to be joined by Scott Akosaki momentarily right after this break. Okay, at least the Dodgers won a game that makes for a happy flight home. And the guy that is
Starting point is 00:15:58 in charge of all of those things is our friend and a guy that is incredibly gifted at his job. Scott Akasaki, the Dodgers director of team travel. To me, he's a traveling secretary. He, he were on this director of team travel name to make him sound better than what he actually is. But Scott, hi. How are you, my friend? It is wonderful to see you. I want to start this conversation by asking you, and all of the times I've covered this team and watched this team, I've never known us to have to take a water taxi. And that's what happened in Baltimore.
Starting point is 00:16:31 You have to take a bunch of water taxis over to get to the buses to get to Camden Yards. Take me through that whole scenario. What happened? Well, Alana, it was an interesting situation. We were contacted by the Orioles about a month before, and they said, hey, there's going to be. be a huge bike race. So you may have to think about or rethink how you're going to get to the stadium that day. And one of their suggestions was, why don't you take water taxis over to the
Starting point is 00:17:02 other side of the harbor and have your bus over there. So we kind of followed their lead and it worked out. We contacted the Baltimore water taxi, not an ad, but they did great. And it worked out. So I'm very thankful and it was a very unique way to get to the stadium. And potentially the first time in Major League history that a team took a boat to get to the stadium. I guess that's part of the job, huh? You have to be creative. You have to be resourceful. Is that the most difficult part of the job?
Starting point is 00:17:44 Because I, listen, I'm somebody who plans some things here and there, parties, people coming over. and then I'm just drained and exhausted. I don't know how you do it for 162 plus spring training plus postseason and all that. What's kind of the worst part of the job? I think everything is really, I don't know if there's a bad part of the job other than, you know, as Dodger fans, no, the season's long. And so you have to be mentally and physically strong to go approximately 200 games a year. Let me ask you this. So we had many conversations with friend of the program, Max Muncie. He appears on foul territory quite a bit. And we cannot wait to get him back and thank goodness. I believe that is today. He had talked about last season, Scott, how he and a couple of other players obviously really wanted to bond in the last few weeks of the season. And they kind of wanted to just be not necessarily boys club, but really just let's focus on this part of the season so we can claim the ultimate.
Starting point is 00:18:51 being a World Series championship. So that was a little bit different in terms of travel, different planes, maybe more planes, players only. Take me through your perspective of that as director of team travel for this team when logistically, you know, a new, a new postseason arises that's different than the postseason before. Yeah, well, you know, our job, Alana, as you're where as members of the support staff is to enact what our players in front office want. And the decision was made last year, you know, as you're aware, we hadn't won, other than, you know, 2020 in the bubble where we didn't have to travel. We hadn't won in the traditional method of traveling.
Starting point is 00:19:38 So we wanted to think out of the box. And that was one of the ideas that came up was, hey, why don't we go on two planes? And so that was something that was set forth, and we were able to follow through with that plan. And it worked out for us. Are you doing it again this year? Most likely, yes. Well, isn't the team- You got to get there first.
Starting point is 00:20:01 You guys are generally traveling on two planes as it is over the course of the season now, right? How is that working out? Yes, that is how we're doing it. and I may be the first team in pro sports to travel on two planes. I'm not exactly sure, but we are doing that, and it's worked out well. And, you know, one thing, just to sort of peel back the curtain, when we were in Pittsburgh flying at Baltimore, which isn't that long of a flight, we got word that there was an oil light on the player plane.
Starting point is 00:20:39 and you know when your oil light goes on in a car you just find some oil and pour it in and and you're on your way right it's really not that long of a delay for an airplane there's a little bit more involved and didn't know exactly how long it would take whether it was truly low oil and so we had the contingency to if stuff started to go bad in the middle of the night in Pitzer. Remember, it was a night game getaway day. We had the contingency in place to have all the player group jump on the staff plane. And we would have been fine, but, you know, we have a good team in place. And we were ready for all of that if it had happened. And I think that's one of the luxuries of traveling onto planes is hopefully you're
Starting point is 00:21:33 able to stay nimble and ahead of any type of mechanical problems. Because that is, you know, to get back to Clint's question, the worst part of the job is when you have an airplane mechanical issue because there's nothing you could other than rely on the mechanics. And so, and parts and availability. And, you know, there's so much that's not in your control. So that's probably the worst part of the job anyway. But, you know, with two planes, you have an out. I have a, I have a 38-part question for you, Scott Akosaki. Number one, since there's a player plane and a support staff plane, who in the support staff plane gets to sit in first class now? Because when we were all together, the coaching staff and some broadcasters were in first, and then it was some support staff,
Starting point is 00:22:24 and then it was broadcasters for a certain few rows, and then it was players in the back. So now that there's two planes, who is first class on the support. staff plane on the non-player plane? That's all coaches. Okay. So the coaches aren't even with the players? Correct. Ah, very nice, very nice. All right, part number two, you have been with the Los Angeles Dodgers since 2000 in this
Starting point is 00:22:51 particular role since 2005. Scott Akasaki, you've been doing this for 20 years. What is something that young Buck Akasaki would have done in 2005 that veteran seasoned director of team travel Akasaki would not? not do in 2025. Holy cow, what a loaded question. Thanks for the questions in advance, Alana. You know, I think, I think just, I think in life, right? Your, this is not necessarily a work-related question, but a life question. The ups and downs of one's day, is the young Scott Akasaki would sort of jump and react.
Starting point is 00:23:45 And the version now is a little bit more, okay, let's wait and see what happens. Because sometimes things take care of themselves. Sometimes they don't. And I think life experiences can sort of act as signs. And maybe your first initial reaction isn't the best. best reaction to have or maybe not the best choice to take. I mean, we learn a lot over 20 years of doing any sort of gig. I got a lot to learn clearly about just general things about life.
Starting point is 00:24:22 One thing I'd like to learn by having you here is, listen, I'm somebody that loves a team dress-up day. This is definitely a pallet cleanser of a question here. I love the team dress-up day. One, is it coming back in 2025? I know you're not directly immediately in charge of all that kind of. of stuff, but people can throw back to one of your best dress moments being Freddie Freeman here in 2022. And I think you nailed it. The high pants, just an absolute touch of genius there.
Starting point is 00:24:51 But is it coming back? And what has been your favorite team dress-up day moment? Well, the dress-up day hasn't been decided. I don't know if we're going to do it. It is a lot of fun. It's certainly something that we can throw out there and actually we don't have that many flights left. So it is coming down to the wire. My favorite personally for me was being Mr. Chow from the hangover. That's a good one. I couldn't find that photo by the way. I got to get Where's Sue Who at. I need to get that photo from Sue Who real quick. Well, hopefully they can find a way to make that happen.
Starting point is 00:25:46 Because I think it feels like this team could use a little bit more, you know, a little joy, spark, a little fun to end the season or whatever. But also there's something to, hey, let's keep our heads down and try to go out there and start winning some ball games and all of that. No, no, no. Scott likes, don't, don't. I know he looks very serious right now, very professional, you know, very, very buttoned up, which he is. Best Traveling Secretary in the League, and I've dealt with a lot of people in this game. But Scott, why don't you tell him how you scared the absolute hell out of me one time in a hotel room when it all started with pens? Oh, yeah.
Starting point is 00:26:19 So I would, so, you know, where Alana would work, right, would be next to the dugout. And I noticed that she was using a hotel pen. And I just, I think I sent her a text, hey, nice pen that you're using. And I didn't mean anything by it, but I felt like she would want more pens in her room. So I had one of the hotels load her room up with about literally 100 pens. And the people, the staff, had so much fun with it that they put an LA logo in pens on her bed, which was probably a little enervous. when I think about it and then they kind of took it too far.
Starting point is 00:27:09 I just meant for them to put maybe 12 pens in the room. It was terrifying. A hundred in a logo. So, apologies. It was terrifying. Yeah, it was terrifying because I was like, first of all, why do I have 789 pens in my room? Second of all, why are they on my bed?
Starting point is 00:27:25 Thirdly, why are they in an LA logo shape? Like, what kind of freak is follow me around, knows where we're staying, got into my room, put out, oh, it was our director of teen travel. That was the freak. That was the first. It was a, yeah, now that I think about it, probably not the best move. Slightly unnerving. Let me ask you one more question before we let you go.
Starting point is 00:27:49 So the Dodgers are one of the most gracious and giving organizations that I've been around in terms of how well they treat, not only support staff and employees of the organization, but the families of the players and all of that. Now, you and your beautiful wife, Tiffany, have five children. There are other folks that have, you know, kids and in the postseason, everybody gets to go. Logistically, though, how much of a nightmare is that getting everybody coordinated, especially folks that are not used to charter travel and are not used to our system, making sure that you get all of them taken care of, but knowing that the players are your main
Starting point is 00:28:30 responsibility? Yeah, that's certainly challenging because you're, traveling party basically quadruples in size. And so what that means is your screening process takes longer, loading the buses takes longer, right? Everything becomes 4x, right? And your, you know, a simple thing like getting your keys and waiting for the elevator, and so your movement becomes four times as long.
Starting point is 00:29:00 So once you're used to doing something very rapidly during the season, when you have about, let's say, 100 people, and now it goes to 400. And sometimes, not all the time, but sometimes kids don't necessarily cooperate with what the plan is. So things can go sideways at times. And so how do we do it? A little bit of patience, like many parents, and understanding. But then now what we've done with this two-plane system is we're able to prioritize. prioritize the players and get them moving out when they don't have to be necessarily tied to the
Starting point is 00:29:44 slowness for lack of better term of the family members. What a flex. Nothing says you have one hell of an ownership group than a team that takes two planes wherever the heck they want to go. Scott Akisaki, director of team travel for your Los Angeles Dodgers. We appreciate you. Hell of a job, man. 25 years. with the one organization is tough to do and nobody does it better than you. Thanks for taking the time. We'll see you in the postseason. Thank you, Alana. Thank you, Clint. I enjoyed being on. All right, guys. Scott Akasaki. We'll be right back with last licks right after this break. Fidelity brokerage services LLC member NYSE, SIPC. All right, time now for last Licks, introducing you once again to Havana, Unana. She needs an adopter, guys. She is being fostered right now in La Habra, California. She is a boxer and pity mix.
Starting point is 00:32:39 She was found in Englewood, absolutely emaciated, starved. Actually, ironically, ran into the home of the Gidreys Guardian Foundation Vice President. Her husband was walking her own dog, and Havana ran up to Ramon and followed him inside. I mean, talk about Kismet, right? Talk about meant to be. She was amaciated starving. She's much better now. She's getting healthy.
Starting point is 00:33:03 We love to see it. She's about two months out of being really available for adoption, but we're taking applications now. She's about a year old, and she'll be spayed in about a month. If you're interested in learning more about Havana, Una, check us out at giddreesguardian.org. Hit me up on my socials. All right, Clint, what's coming up on all Dodgers with Clint Paseous?
Starting point is 00:33:24 Well, I got a home game. Dodgers are back home thanks to our friend Scott Akisaki, so we'll probably be post-gaming for that one. Also, live post-game tomorrow here on Dodge Territory. She won't, she won't be here. I will be here. So hang out with us if you guys don't mind. But yeah, that's pretty much it.
Starting point is 00:33:43 What I wanted to talk to you about, Alana, is let's talk a little bit more about this team. Back home, you're playing the Colorado Rockies, three game series. This has to be a get right series for this team, right? It has to be, but you can't look at it as an easy series. Because I say, oh, it's the Colorado Rockies. Well, we said that about the Angels. We said that about the Pirates. We said that about the Orioles.
Starting point is 00:34:07 And the Dodgers got swept by two of those teams and lost two of three from the other. So this is not a team that you can overlook because albeit whatever their win-loss record is, they're still a major league team. So yes, a get right series, absolutely. But take the control back, right? Take the momentum back. Take the positivity back. I think it's important that this isn't, again, you're at home.
Starting point is 00:34:29 You get the final at bat. You're coming off a good win. You're coming off of Clayton Kershaw, dominating performance. Let's get going again. Let's be the Los Angeles daughters that we know that we can be. Before we say goodbye, let's get in the super chat from Francisco Dias. Road trip was a heartbreaking one. Philly's gained more ground, division lead, down to one.
Starting point is 00:34:45 And don't look now. The seven games against San Francisco are very important now. Then they were this time last week, and he's right. But that's okay. And the team knows that too, right? The team absolutely knows that. And there's help. Max Muncie's back today.
Starting point is 00:34:58 Alex Bessi is back today. So you're getting a good arm in the bullpen. You're getting a much-needed cog in that lineup. Fabi and Ardaya, friend of the program, writes for the athletic. Tommy Edmund is close. Plan for Tyler Glass now is to start a game in this Rocky series. So probably not today.
Starting point is 00:35:12 My guess would be tomorrow for Glass now. So anyways, guys, thanks for being here. Thanks to Scott Akasaki. We always appreciate our guest taking us someplace we can't go. We appreciate that very much. Don't forget the Doctors Territory Shop is open. Doctorsterritoryshop.com. You can scan that code on YouTube or go to the website,

Starting point is 00:35:43 I don't know what day it is. Whatever. I'll be back. Not tomorrow, but Thursday. All right, guys, thanks for being here. We appreciate you very much. Go Dodgers, beat those Rockies. Bye.
