What is up, everybody?
Welcome to a special episode of Dodgers Territory on this Wednesday.
Typically Clint Paseas and myself, Alana Rizzo, were with you on Thursdays.
But hey, it's a holiday week.
tomorrow so how about getting the show in today and Clint it is a special show because this is the 30th
episode of dodgers territory and we have a very special guest coming up yeah we made it we made it the 30
and we got to bring in the manager dave robert so that's going to be fun i'm excited i think people
are going to enjoy this one but let's get into some dodger talk you know big ticket teo needs an
extension clint let's lock them up lock them up for a long time i mean the walk off yesterday against
Arizona Diamondbacks, what he's been able to do as far as outfield production is concerned.
This guy's the man. Let's do it.
This is, you know, we've talked a lot of a lot about it here on the internet over the last
couple of months, weeks or whatever, between this channel, my channel.
The Dodgers Outfield outlook beyond this season, it could be a little thin, you know,
unless James Outman kind of figure some things out, Andy Paez continues to grow.
But to have a veteran, to have somebody that knows how to get the job done the way
to Oscar Hernandez does. And he's here on a one-year deal signed here for lesser money because he
wants to win. And he also knows like, hey, the Dodgers help people. The Dodgers are very good at
bringing out the most in batters, well, everybody, pitchers, hitters, all that kind of stuff.
Not that he needed an abundance of help, but to get out of Seattle, now you see this dude
drops another three-hit game. The walk-off that ninth inning was, I didn't think that was going to
happen. I didn't have that feeling in my gut that the team was going to come back the way they
did will smith nice game gets that double off the wall freddie freeman backs it up with another
double and then tay oscar send him to the freaking all-star game in that starting lineup sorry he's
already in the all-star game put him in that starting lineup dodgers fans need to vote his ass into the
starting lineup and the dodgers and your freedman alana give him a call tell him get this man an extension
right the f now thank you i'm going to call him right now yeah i'm gonna call uh ander freeman be like
what are we waiting for uh yeah get to asker her nander
to the All-Star game. Get Will Smith to the All-Star game. I mean, the man has unbelievable
numbers and not for nothing. This come from behind win and the walk-off win. You mentioned it Will
Smith with the double Freddie Freeman. It's like Will started it, Freddie continued it. Oscar
finished it. Oscar finished it. And they're doing it without Mookie bets at Max Muncie,
which I don't think we're talking about that enough. I mean, these are two huge elements of this
Dodger starting lineup. Professional at bats, work in the counts, just what Mookie does for you
at the lead-off spot, what Max does as far as making the opposing pitchers.
or throw a lot of pitches and they're getting it done with that. So that's got to make you feel good.
Makes you feel really good. That was one of the hopes I had when you find the silver linings.
If the team loses somebody like a mooky bets, how do they react? How do they respond? You can go
tail between your legs or you could step up, help each other out, everybody pulling on the same side
of the rope, which we know this team does very, very well. And it's fun to watch, particularly the top of the
order when they're all, you know, hitting on all cylinders, the way we saw Otani, by the way,
that baseball destroyed. And it was only like the 10th longest homer of him for him this season,
which is insane. Will Smith getting off the Schneide here now in July. You love that. And
Freddie continues the heat. Bottom of lineup, still concerned, but it's fun to watch the veterans
at the top put in that work. And it's also fun. Let's talk a little Bobby Miller. I don't know if you
saw that but once again christian walker does what he does against the dodgers drops up bono very much
annoying we'll talk a little bit about that i think we talked at one point a couple weeks ago it's like
to stop pitching to christian walker or get him on your team or get him on your team or you i mean if you can't
beat him trade for him you know i mean by the way really quick on showy otani's 26th home run of the season
i hope that kid's noggin is okay um that it bounced off his head but yeah bobby miller uh take you know
maybe putting in it to another gear.
Yeah, he needed that.
Absolutely needed to see that out of him.
Gives up the homer, loads the bases, nobody out.
And he lived on the fastball to escape that jam.
So you do worry a little bit about just relying on the fastball in that situation.
But let's take it positive, to spin it positive.
He escaped the inning with no damage, you know, lets out the roar.
He's feeling good.
Dodger Stadium goes off.
Love to see that.
And you hope that continues, you know,
is kind of settling back into the starting rotation.
Because he had said before between these two starts,
his last start and this start,
it still kind of feels like spring training to him again.
You know, he missed almost two months with the shoulder injury,
let him kind of, you know, find himself.
And if, you know, it was the fastball, whatever it is,
helping him get there.
I'm happy with what I saw out of Bobby Miller,
because I was starting to get a little airing on the side of a little bit of concern.
But anytime we can see Bobby screaming, it's a good time.
I'm so jealous of you that you still live in LA and then you still get to go to Dodger Stadium and see all that stuff.
When I was watching the game last night and I saw, you know, Tay Oscar with a walkoff single, that stadium erupted.
And remember when I said that, you know, nothing has any, no series have any fire until basically we play the Phillies.
I saw an emotion in that stadium that I hadn't seen in a long time.
I mean, all walkoffs are fun.
And again, the Diamondbacks, it's a divisional foe, but they're not great this year.
at least not yet.
And that was a lot of fun to see,
just the come from behind and how excited all the fans were.
It reminded me of, you know, kind of the 2018 season,
2020 season a little bit,
not with the fans in the stands during COVID,
but you know what I mean,
just the come from behind stuff
and everything that the Dodgers did.
Hello, hello, I'm Malcolm Gladwell,
host of the podcast Smart Talks with IBM.
I recently sat down with IBM's chairman and CEO, Arvin Krishna.
But I asked him, how can companies use AI to its fullest potential to create smarter business?
My one advice to them, pick areas you can scale.
Don't pick the shiny little toys on the side.
For example.
If anybody has more than 10% of what they had for customer service 10 years ago,
they're already five years behind it.
If anybody is not using AI to make their developers who write software 30% more productive today,
with the goal of being 70% more productive.
Yeah.
So we are not asking our clients to be the first experiment on it.
We say, you can leverage what we did.
We're happy to bring out all our learnings, including what needs to change in the process,
because the biggest change is not technology, is getting people to accept that there's a different way to do things.

Again, Clint and I are so grateful to Fowell Territory for having us on their channel,
but Dodgers Territory, our 30th episode.
And this is why I think, Clint, that you watch Dodgers Territory for the stuff that we're
about to hear for manager Dave Roberts, who was kind enough to join us yesterday,
just to talk about where we're at.
Dave Roberts is kind enough to join us today on Dodgers Territory,
our special guest. Of course, Skip wears number 30. It's our 30th episode of Dodgers territory.
And Doc, thanks for being with us. I really appreciate it. Clinton, I have a boatload of questions,
but I'm going to ask you this first. As we are approaching the halfway mark of the season,
I mean, you guys are doing what is expected of the Dodgers. You're expected to win the division.
You're expected to go to the postseason. But how would you grade your club thus far,
skip? I would grade it a letter grade. I would give it.
A solid, let's say a solid B.
I think that I think the people that know me know that I don't use things that are out of our control,
unforeseen bleed into the grade, you know, as far as injuries.
Anyone can talk about that.
So with what we've been dealt with, I certainly hold a high bar for our guys.
So I give us a solid B.
I think the biggest strength has been the bullpen.
We've kind of patchworked it together and guys have stepped up big time.
Starting pitching has sort of been really good and not so good.
The defense has been consistently much better in the last six weeks, which I really appreciate.
And the hitting has been somewhat certainly consistent at the top.
And then outside of that, been sort of missed.
middling, but getting better.
I think we're trending in the right way as far as consistency one through nine.
But I think the biggest X factor is the way we play hard every day and we compete as well as
anybody.
So many different ways you can kind of expand off of that.
We'll stay positive to open it before we start hammering you with the tough questions here.
But I know a month and a half ago or something like that, you did give some love to the bullpen.
Definitely, you know, not the bullpen you guys entered can.
you know, expecting to roll out there.
But so many guys have kind of stepped up, stepped in,
seeing the emergence of somebody like Alex Vesio,
who we've talked a lot about on this show,
you know, the magic of a Dave Roberts hug
to make somebody like Yon Ramirez into an absolute weapon,
but also finding things in Michael Grove.
And then, of course, back into that bullpen being locked down with Trinin,
with Evan Phillips, and, of course, with Dan Hudson.
What has been kind of the biggest standout,
the biggest surprise in that bullpen?
in your opinion? I would say the biggest surprise is probably Alex Vesia in the sense that
he's really taking on more of a leadership role. He's closed some games out. He has been very good
versus right, very good versus left, the consistency, the maturity. I've seen it firsthand over the last
few years. So not to say it's a surprise, but I just think that he's really, to his credit,
elevated his game on a lot of fronts. But yeah, you said it. Evan, Blake and Huddy at the
back end are kind of stalwarts in the pen and that have helped the other guys around them
be great. And Josh Bard has done a great job with the culture. And they're sort of like
the stepchild. And they don't get enough credit. And when their name is mention,
in the mediates, usually because they gave up a lead or blew a save.
So, you know, kind of keeping that mindset of ready when called upon,
they've done a fantastic job and made me look really good.
Relievers need love too, Dave Roberts.
I know that you have to give grace when players come off of the IL.
So when Mookie Betts does come off of the IL, does he hit lead off for you again?
And is he your starting shortstop when he comes back?
Yeah, you know, it's a good question.
I think that what I do feel with Mookie being out,
I think that I feel that breaking up Shohei and Freddie is something I'm going to do.
I just think that we've seen it.
Certainly teams are going to go with the lefty whenever they can
and not have to pay a right-handed hitter tax,
something that we're going to.
to go away from once mookie gets back so to your question is you going to hit lead off i don't know
that yet you know because even you know tonight this is going to air tomorrow but tonight they're going to
open mantiply who's a lefty killer to get show hey and freddie in the first inning um i don't know
if it's a situation verse left muki hits lead off and show hey number two or we just kind of leave it
Mookie and the one, Shohay and the two, Will and the three, Freddy and the four.
I don't know yet, but I am sort of beholden to splitting up those two lefties.
And as far as the second question, I don't know yet, Alon.
I think that we're still a ways from Mookie getting back.
I don't think anyone debates the fact what Miggie Rowe can do on the defensive side.
And to his credit, offensively, he's having his best year that he's had in a decade.
And that's with a swing change, with a lot of work.
I just love the back quality.
Then you're talking about what we do with Gavin Lux.
And so there are some things that, you know, right there you see Miggie staying up the middle.
And I don't know, you know, I don't want to kind of put the cart before the horse
because, you know, there's a psyche with Gavin that you have to be respectful of and appreciative of
that I want him thinking about playing baseball games and continue to build that confidence that he has.
And so we'll cross that bridge.
I'll kick the can a little bit, but we'll see, Alana.
You mentioned Lux there.
Obviously, it's not quite the season he's expected since coming back from losing
what was arguably going to be the most important season of his career last year,
devastating knee injury.
Some good in there, some bad.
You really like the defense there that you've seen out of Lux at second base.
What's kind of the messaging that you're given to somebody that's now into, you know,
the fourth month of the season still kind of just.
So, you know, treading water, hoping to find something that clicks.
Well, I think the thing for me that I've seen growth is the defense has been consistent.
And a lot of people, young players in particular, will take their offense to the defense side of the baseball.
And to be quite frank, if he did that, he wouldn't be getting the opportunities.
I'm giving them.
So to his credit, he's manned defense and gotten a lot better and been very consistent.
I think now that we've got 200 play appearances under our belt,
I like the more aggressive Gavin Lux when he gets a ball in the hitting zone
to try to move the ball with some impact.
He's still taking walks.
I just think that he's got a, you know, he's holding water.
I think that I want to see, you know,
sometimes I just see wasted at bat, you know,
the first pitch ground out to the first baseman or the second base.
where if you're going to be aggressive early, then I want to see it impacted more.
But he's getting better.
And so I think the message is just go out there and keep trying to help us win baseball games.
I'll ask you this because I've known you my entire baseball life and you've always been
one of the most gracious giving honest, helpful people in the game.
And as an active manager, you have a higher winning percentage than anybody that's out there.
and yet there's the fire Dave Roberts chance,
and I want to punch them right in their throat.
Punch them right in their throat, Skip.
Cut their jugular right out of their neck.
How do you handle it?
I think, first off, I don't do social media.
I think it's very helpful for my mental health.
I don't know, Alana.
I think that now everyone has a platform
and they don't have accountability.
I have to be accountable to my decisions,
what I say, my actions,
and the world now people can sound off and create a narrative.
And if it happens well, then there's nothing to be said.
And if it doesn't, then there's more smoke.
So I don't pay too much attention to it because these people aren't around.
They don't have all the information.
And a lot of it is intentional because there's a gamesmanship part that I don't want to divulge to other teams.
So a lot of people are using information.
They have half the information, right?
So, yeah, I think that if you look at World Series or bust,
or if I don't win the World Series, I'm fired.
All I can do is I know my players respect the way we go about it.
I go about it.
I pour into the city of Los Angeles.
I love the Dodgers.
I know the history.
We do win.
We got to win in the way.
in the postseason again, which I expect to.
But I don't know, Alana, I don't let it get to me too much because I love what I do.
It is harder now because there's a lot more scrutiny.
And even when you win, you know, there's still fired Dave Roberts chance.
But, you know, I think for me, I'm more sensitive to my kids than myself because this is what I signed up for.
Hey, you know what? I look at it, the wine glass half full here.
That just means the Los Angeles Dodgers are supposed to go out there and win.
Anytime you guys aren't winning or not, you know, smashing down an opponent by five to 10 runs per game, oh, that's not good enough for people.
You guys go out there, you win, the success has been there for the last decade.
Staying on the social media thing, it's something I've kind of wondered because, Dave, I watched you here as a Dodger in your playing days.
I had a whole question about the 0-4 team.
I'll leave that. I know you're a busy man.
But how much do you think social media has changed, you know, kind of the players' psyche,
how much that affects players and managers today in baseball and, I mean, other sports,
but really focus to baseball.
What kind of effect has the social media era brought?
You know, there's always like everything, there's good and bad.
I think to your question, Clint, I think on the player's side, it's been a big detriment.
And I say that because it's the whole adage of you're never as good as they say you are.
You're never as bad.
With social media, they're getting the, you're the best, you're the greatest ever.
And then you struggle.
You're the worst.
We want to kill you.
Your family.
What are you doing?
And it's just the up and down roller coaster.
I think it's hard for people to manage and navigate, especially when people are in their 20s and they're still trying to find themselves as adults.
let alone as professional athletes.
I encourage guys to get off social media
because there's not a whole lot of good
that come from it for me.
You just sort of go down these rabbit holes.
And I think that, you know, I think that,
so it's a big discussion, Clinton,
I appreciate you raising this,
because I think it should be a broader discussion.
And again, people aren't trying to,
all of them aren't trying to, you know,
tear people down.
but I do think that it's hard for people to navigate emotions while navigating performance
because my job is to try to help guys be great young men appreciate being a major league
ball player, what that entails, the responsibility, and help us win baseball games.
And so when you get people kind of sounding off that don't have all the information
that are speaking about exit velocity and don't.
talk about the little things to help you win baseball games.
It just makes my job harder, but that's part of it.
And as far as a coach, I talked to Bruce Bochie,
and he's back and he's a Hall of Fame manager,
and he's like, you know, it's never been harder to manage nowadays
because of the scrutiny on social media.
So I guess sometimes for me, Clint,
I try not to give these people, these trolls,
more power than they think they already have.
And so, but it's out there.
It's real and you got to sort of manage it.
But my most important thing is to the players and to the organization, the city of Los Angeles.
That's why as we get older, our circle of trust becomes smaller.
And that's why you love on each guy, Dave.
That's why you are more than just a manager.
You're a psychologist.
You're a counselor.
You're a father.
You're all of these things.
What does a day in the life of Dave Roberts look like?
I'm not going to be at the All-Star game this year.
I'll answer that question.
I expect to be there next year, wherever it's.
that.
So I'm going to be at home in San Diego.
I get to the ballpark, call it around 1 o'clock.
I am actually going to get a haircut here shortly.
We have a barber, junior, here.
So he's going to tighten me up.
So get rid of these grays that you see.
So I'm going to get a haircut.
I might rip a cigar.
I go and talk to the trainers.
Making sure that all the guys, you know, the lineup is set, the bullpen, how these guys are feeling.
I'll talk to the coaches and kind of get their insights on the pitcher tonight as Ryan Nelson.
Make sure the position and get with Mark Pryor.
Players start rolling in at about 2, 2.30.
I'll go in the food room, get a bite to eat, check in on Tyrone and Kristen in the food room,
talk to some players.
Then I got a little spot that I watch hitters work out at in the batting cage.
So I go up top and kind of peer in on them and watch them work with the hitting guys.
Then I'll grab a little bite to eat.
And then Dino starts doing like some infield work with the players.
And I'll go out to the field, call it 3 o'clock.
And then I just like to be out there, get some vitamin D and be around and watch the players work.
Because our guys work so well.
So they start taking their grounders.
And then I got media at 405-4-10.
And then batting practice starts.
Then I'll pop in, get another little meal pre-meal.
And every day, an hour before every game, Mark Pryor, the pitching guys, the run prevention guys,
we meet with somebody in the front office and we just talk about pitching.
You know, talk about the start of that particular night.
Who's available in the pen?
I talk about lanes trying to figure out where's best for Alex Vessia or Trinan and or Yarborough
and Michael Peterson or whoever, right?
And then so obviously the game can go a lot of different ways each night, but just to kind
of give me an idea, you know, where I want to go, what everyone's thinking is very helpful.
So we do that every day.
And then the best part of the day, Clint, is when they play that national anthem and it's
just baseball.
Last question before I say goodbye to you.
Are you and Shohei going to buy Javiera a Porsche?
He saved the franchise.
Where's the toy?
I know, but that was show haste for you, Dave.
That was showhaste for you.
Somebody needs to get Javier real one.
Yeah, you're right.
So he buys Joe Kelly and Ashley a Porsche for the number switch.
So Jovey saved his life.
So he's only made a mansion.
He's only making $2 million this year. Come on.
Yeah, that's fair.
That's fair.
He's got to stay.
It's only $2 million and he doesn't make any money off the field, I'm sure.
Oh, not at all.
Not at all.
Dave Roberts, you are an absolute gem in this business.
You're a Hall of Fame person before you're a Hall of Fame manager.
We cannot thank you enough for joining us today on Dodgers territory.
Skip number 30 for our 30th episode.
Best of luck, sir.
I adore you.
You know that.
I appreciate you very much. Clint and I are very thankful for you. Thanks so much.
No, you guys do a great job. And Clint, man, you do a great job with the Dodgers.
And I love the passion, man. It's great. So Alana, you know, I love you. Take care and good luck, guys.

And, you know, credit to you for getting more of the human side out of him than a lot of us do. But let's talk about Shohay for just a second. 26th home run yesterday. We discussed that. Again, I understand he's rehabbing. I understand he's a $700 million man. But all things being considered, if Shohay wasn't rehabbing and he was healthy, you got to let him play, no?
Yeah, you got to let him hit, let him hit in that home run derby.
Of course, the news dropped, you know, full transparency to everybody.
We did ask Dave before yesterday's game about Otani in the derby.
And, you know, that was the one time Dave was able to, he had to be a little coy with us, but officially put it out there.
He's not going to be in the derby.
There's just too much writing in the line.
And I love the quote he said.
He signed here to win a championship, not participate in a home run derby.
So I appreciate that.
You got to let guys play.
If they want to play, you have to leave it up to them.
I'm not talking about Shohei because he's rehabbing.
I get it.
But if he wasn't rehabbing and he wanted to play, I don't care if he's a $700 million
man because, again, as we discussed, you could sneeze and throw out your back.
Yeah, I know.
We got a little blowback for our conversation on Monday about Otani and the Derby.
And I still fully agree with the idea of, yeah, this is your star.
You got to, if he's the face.
of Major League Baseball. He should be in there. But, you know, like letting, letting the smart brain
happen, letting the coffee kick in or whatever. It's probably not the best idea. It's also not the
best look if he's rehabbing an elbow injury. Things go bad. Things can go bad. And it could be,
maybe he hurts himself during the All-Star festivities there or whatever it is. I'm not,
I'm not mad at the Dodgers first, you know, kind of pulling the plug or at least saying, no, I'm not
mad i'm i'm you know backpedaling on what i said because we got backlash on the internet that's what i'm doing
i don't care i don't care i would let him again if he wasn't rehabbing i would let him play if you
wanted to participate you want him to be the face of the game you want to grow the game i mean again
i'm i'm not i'm disappointed that he's not healthy enough to do it but if he was i'd let him do
it i mean i'm not going to stop the world baseball classic because edwin dyes got hurt in a celebration
I'm not going to take that away from a player that wants to play for their country.
I understand that the home run derby is an exhibition and the world baseball classic means more.
But that's okay.
I get where the Dodgers are coming from.
But again, you know, like you can sleep wrong and jack up your neck.
Maybe that's just me because I'm 100 years old.
But trust me, when you get to my age, you can sleep wrong and jack up your neck.
All right, time now for last licks.
Allow us to introduce you to baby boy read.
He is a one-year-old border collie mix.
This dog is so, so special.
was rescued with three hours to spare before he was going to be euthanized at the San Bernardino
shelter in San Bernardino, California. He is just a love. He is trying to look at his socks,
his little white socks. He has started training on Monday. So he's in an obedience training program.
He's young. He's a puppy. But he's neutered. He's healthy. He's wonderful. He's in a foster home in
Orange County. But we would like to find him a forever home. He'll be ready to go when his
training sessions are up. Reach out at Good,
guardian.org or hit us up on social, the social channels. We could always use donations,
monetary donations for his training costs and all of his vet fees, but he's a beautiful boy.
And again, worth every penny because he was saved from euthanasia about three hours
before he was going and be put down. And he reminds me of my dog Guidry, actually,
who I named the foundation after. So, um, adopt Reed. He's wonderful. All right, um,
Javier Herrera, the man. I love the reception he got, Clint.
well-deserved. It might not be a Porsche, but to get the love of the city or from the city of
Los Angeles, that's pretty moving. And going back to what you said earlier in the show,
where we enter this series with the Diamondbacks, you kind of don't feel a lot of juice.
Dodger Stadium brought it. They absolutely brought it last night. And it started with Javi Herrera,
getting the standing O, the well-deserved, because again, he saved the life.
We saved the life of Shohei Otani, or at least saved him from going on the
IEL. Another thing that might have kept them from the home run derby. Much deserved. Much
deserved love for the kid. You know what it would have been sick is if Shohei Otani would have,
they would have opened the center field doors, and he would have drove out on the warning
track in a brand new Porsche and drove it around like they do in St. Louis with the Clydesdales
and just drove the Porsche around and then just handed Hobby the keys.
It's just like dropping Porsche. That is some big league stuff right there.
Just leave it up to me. I'll spend your money. I don't care.
Good. I mean, I'm in. I'm in on this idea. Can we get a couple ourselves? Like, I mean, I'm in.
Make it happen.
Yeah, it doesn't even have to be a Porsche. I'll take a, I'll take like a Vespa.
Call Andrew. I'll take a Dodger Blue Vespa. Yes, I'm going to get on the phone right now and call Andrew Friedman. All right. Thank you, everybody, Dodgers Territory, our 30th episode. We love having you on here. Like us, subscribe us, rate us five stars. Thanks for tubing in as my guys.
says. We appreciate you very much. Clint and I will be back on Monday for another live show.
Have a great, safe, and happy Fourth of July weekend. Take care. Bye.
