I think it was a must win. And not only that, guys got healthy. It was a get right day. A must need to win. Hello, everybody, and welcome to this Monday live edition of Dodgers territory. We are your host. I am Alana Rizzo. That is Clint Paseas. Dodgers are off today before hitting the road and starting a nine-game road trip. And Clint, before we get in, into the big ticket, what is the biggest takeaway that you took from the most recent homestand?
Starting point is 00:02:39 It's nice to get out of town. That was my big takeaway. It's just a team that's still kind of finding itself, discovering itself, but I'm not worried. I'm not scared about anything yet. All right. That's a good segue into the big ticket, so let's get right to it. Now, I think you could say, Clint, that perhaps yesterday's game, a 10-to-nothing victory over the surging New York Mets could very well be a get right game. Is that fair to say? I mean, I would argue that you need to back it up with a few wins to open the road trip, but it's a damn good start to getting right because this team was all discombobulated to end that homestand. But if they were getting right, they did it in a hell of a way. You got a show A. Homer in there. You got Tyler Glasnow shoving, really, really complete
Starting point is 00:03:34 feeling game. As Dave Roberts also said. for that Sunday matinee. Yeah, we're going to get into Tyler Glass now in just a moment. But prior to yesterday's win, the Dodgers had lost seven of their last 10 games. So I think it's a good thing that they absolutely had a laugh for yesterday. I think this team needs to laugh a bit because it's been a bit of a struggle. The first three and a half wins or excuse me, weeks of the season.
Starting point is 00:03:56 But you talked about Shohei Otani. I'm not certain that we have enough adjectives, Clint, to continue to describe what a special man this guy is. He had another milestone home run yesterday. In fact, it broke. the tie that he had with Hadeki Matsui for the most home runs ever by a Japanese-born player. He had an 01 slider over the fence, 423 feet, and he now stands alone as far as the most home runs hit by a Japanese-born player. Congratulations to Shohei Otani. Good to see for him.
Starting point is 00:04:26 Yeah, that was something special. And what I love about seeing Shohei homers is that when he gets him, boy, do you know they are gone. You got the little, the little toe tab. a little dance and turn. And that ball just kept on sailing halfway up, the pavilion there in right field. That was a majestic shot. If you're going to break a record set by one of your childhood heroes, that is one hell of a way to do it. Yeah, it was really cute what he said, too, after the ball game through his interpreter, Will Ierton. And he was waiting to break Dave Roberts home run of seven home runs as a Dodger, the most by a Japanese-born player. A lot of people forget that Dave Roberts is half Japanese. So that was cute of Shohay to say,
Starting point is 00:05:06 but it's good to see him get that type of stuff. And another thing that's really great, Clint, is it appears that the fan that received the ball actually got the ball. They got to keep it and it was authenticated. It's a good thing. I guess we got that whole bullshit at the stadium out of the way a couple weeks ago so we can have an actually special home run. This one probably has a lot more significance than his first home run as a Dodger
Starting point is 00:05:31 or tying Matsui. This one is it's setting a record for Japanese-born players. So I'll be interested to see that ball coming up on maybe eBay, offer up out here in L.A. or something like that. But to me, you know, congrats to him. Congrats whoever got the ball. I'm sure it's going to be generational wealth for them or maybe not that far. But they're going to fetch a pretty penny for it. It is going to be a pretty penny.
Starting point is 00:05:56 And Fabian Ardaya, you just saw that tweet there, also said that not only did Shohei get that home run, but Andy Pahas picked up his first home run in a Dodger uniform. So again, we're going to need some. more consistency, Clint, and some more production from the bottom part of the order. Yeah, I had tweeted it yesterday during the game. They're actually scoring some runs, which I hear is important to winning ball games. But I make up, the Dodgers are back. It was very nice to see.
Starting point is 00:06:23 Maybe you want to see them spread them out a little bit more. I think it was eight runs there in one inning. I'm not going to complain about scoring runs, but you still need more consistent production from the bottom. You need to see kind of Freddie Freeman continue to come out of it. We'll talk more Freddie Freeman a little bit later. But, you know, good steps in the right direction. You still want to see more, but we're trending.
Starting point is 00:06:45 We're trending, and that's what you want to see from this team right now. And we started this whole big ticket segment with the fact that I'm certain that we're running out of adjectives to describe Shohei Otani. But how about the fact that he continues to be Clint compared to Babe Ruth? I mean, that's the kind of guy that we're thinking, okay, that guy was a two-way player a billion years ago. Shohay Otani seems like a unicorn in our time, obviously. But through the first seven, like, look at this. Hector Gomez had such a great tweet. Shohei Otani has now 176 home runs in 725 big league games, right?
Starting point is 00:07:18 Obviously, this doesn't count what he did in Japan. Babe Ruth hit 176 home runs in his first 725 major league career games. You can't make that up. That's really cool. You know, this is where, you know, how do you not get romantic about baseball? When things line up, our pets. heads are staying on instead of falling off, but that's awesome right there. The guy he gets most often compared to tying those numbers.
Starting point is 00:07:41 And we know, well, I don't, I don't think he's going to challenge 714. But by the time Shohei hangs up those cleats, he's going to be pretty damn close to 600 or something, putting it on record right now. I'm saying Shohei hits 600 home runs because that's what I decided to do. 600. Okay, you just threw it out there. You're here first right here on Dodgers territory on the foul territory channel. Okay, why not? 600. How about Tyler Glasnow? Maybe if he had a bat in his hands, he could shove too, as far as that's concerned, because he is so effective on the hill. Eight scoreless innings, Clint. He had 10 punchouts. And he's reminding me a little bit of the Clayton Kirschaw a few years ago. Is Tyler Glasnow now the stopper?
Starting point is 00:08:23 You got to have an ace that you know you can throw out there when you're in these type of skids. You got to have that stopper. Like you said, Clayton Kershaw was that guy for. the better part of a decade. If this is why they traded for Tyler Glass now, he's doing a good job of showing. Hey, I'm going to be your dude for at least the next five years that I'm under contract. Hell of a game. You get the first Dodger pitcher going into the eighth inning for what feels like a million years because pitchers don't pitch deep into ball games anymore. For the first time since July 15th of 2022, the last guy that did it, the other stopper,
Starting point is 00:08:59 Clayton Kershaw. That's the last time a Dodger through eight innings. Begain the first Dodger started to go eight innings since Kershaw did it in 2022. That's almost two years ago. We want to see more of those right now. And you also want to see more, maybe print a few more Tyler Glasnau's on the bump because I like the numbers that you talked about in our pre-production meeting here. The Dodgers breaking are very, very good when Tyler Glasnow is on the bump. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:09:27 I mean, they're five and one, Clint, when Tyler Glass now takes the ball. ball every fifth day. And other times when he's not on the hill, they're eight and ten. Tyler Glasnow, four of his six regular season starts, he's given the Dodgers a quality start. So this is the guy that they were hoping that they got, but it was more, it was more, in my opinion, supposed to be a compliment versus the savior. I mean, this is right now, he's our ace, right? He got the opening day nod. He is the certifiable ace. Clayton Kershaw is on the shelf, Walker Bueller's on the shelf. Tyler Glass now is every bit of the ace at the dog. Rogers needed him to be, but we've got to have more to compliment him in the starting
Starting point is 00:10:05 rotation than just him. Five and one is awesome, but eight and ten when he's not on the hill, not so awesome. Need a little help there. And we know this is a very, very injured pitching staff. We'll talk more about that as we dive into more relievers in a minute. But the fans are going off a little bit. Hey, would not be a show on the internet. KT. Trune says, yes, he is a stopper talking about Tyler Glass now.
Starting point is 00:10:28 our friend Nando 390 says Dave Roberts pulls pictures during no hitters and perfect games, which we would not have a show on YouTube without a little bit of Dave Robert Slander. I liked on Twitter as well. We also had Lizzie who had said, I'm not saying Tyler Glasnow saved us, but I'm pretty sure. Tyler Glassnell. Yeah, Lizzie Bats, I agree with you. Tyler Glassnow did save us. Jose Garcia and Andy's starting to shine, of course, talking about Andy Pahas.
Starting point is 00:10:54 Yeah, you're right. We are going to talk about the fact. Actually, let's get to it. Let's get right to behind the seams because we're talking at length about Tyler Glass now, but we have a lot to talk about too as far as the position players are concerned. That's where we're kind of digging in deep there in behind the scenes second. Let me ask for this. We talked about the fact that the other day, we talked about it on Thursday during Dodgers territory, that the bottom portion of the order needs to get it going. That's still the case four days later, okay? But Freddie Freeman hasn't necessarily gotten it going either. I have no. doubt, first ballot hall of famer. I have no doubt that he will get it going. But right now his 796 OPS, it's not terrible, but it is on pace to be tied for second worst in his career and the
Starting point is 00:11:41 worst since 2012. So far this season, one home run in 24 games. What do you make of it? Well, I mean, getting two doubles on Sunday puts him back on the right track. He has admitted that his swing is kind of in a funk. He mentioned that his hip is kind of pulling on him and it's throwing him out of alignment. So the best he can do is strike out or really poke a ball towards a third base line. But I think you saw particularly over Saturday and Sunday signs of Freddie Freeman coming out of it. You know when this guy is on. He's going to be just shoving a ball over the shortstop. Dodgers fans saw it for years against the team. Now you get to see it in L.A. You're about to see I'll do another prediction here. I think you're about to see a real
Starting point is 00:12:25 fire hot streak from Freddie on this long road trip. All right. MVP season again for Freddie? I mean, if Shohei is going to have 600 career home runs by the end of it all, is Freddie on his way to what? Is it his third MVP? Well, for Freddie, it'll be, I think he'll be a top five guy this year. He's always a top five guy. You're not going out on a limb there, my friend.
Starting point is 00:12:47 Yeah, that's the limb, because it's going to be Mookie Betts or Shohay Otani. How could it not be Mookie Betts or Shoheyotani? But yeah, Freddie was a big spark to that massive eight run inning that this team needed to kind of get, you know, get off their ass and get the happy vibes going. Happy flight for this for this road trip. They're about to start on Tuesday. And not for nothing. Freddie Freeman is not the only big gun, the only star that's not hitting. Aaron Judge, perhaps you've heard of him tied the American League home run record two seasons ago with Roger Maris.
Starting point is 00:13:19 Judge is hitting 183 so far as far as a batting average this year. You think Aaron Judge, I mean, obviously Yankee fans as fickle as they are, they want to run him out of the Bronx. He's going to be fine. Paul Goldschmidt, MVP in his own right, he's hitting 179 for the St. Louis Cardinals who are off to a horrific start. They're at the bottom of the barrel and the NL Central. Josea Brayu of the beloved Houston Astros. Dodgers fans love the Houston Astros. He hasn't hit a home run yet.
Starting point is 00:13:46 And we're three and a half weeks into the season. He is hitting 0.068. He is their starting first basement in that park that the Crawford boxes just scream for his swing. He hasn't hit a home run. So it's not just Freddie Freeman. Again, it's April 22nd. There's no need to go bananas. I think Freddie Freeman's going to be just fine.
Starting point is 00:14:06 Yeah, it's funny how baseball works. Sometimes you have a slump in June. Sometimes you have it in April. Dave Roberts did say about Freddie. Yeah, I would quantify this. I would qualify this as a slump. Nothing that you don't hear about slump and Freddie Freeman. in the same sentence very often.
Starting point is 00:14:23 But again, it's not just him. It's not located centrally in the number three hitters spot in the Dodgers lineup. It is a little bit league-wide because that's just how baseball works. But I'm less worried about any of those guys. I'm less worried about Freddie Freeman getting going. And obviously, Freddie Freeman is at the top of the order, but there's a question here from KT-2 and about the bottom of the order. The difference is that the bottom of the order did get on base last night.
Starting point is 00:14:49 Fair enough. That's a fair point. even if it was just taking a walk, whatever, I'll take it. I'll take a base on balls. I don't care. They have to set the table for the big guys. I hope we see more of what we saw last night. Well, so do we.
Starting point is 00:14:59 And I think we need more complete games. And I'm not talking about going the distance as far as the pitcher is concerned. I'm talking about playing the game the right way on both sides of the ball. More of a complete team effort from the Dodgers. And I think that's kind of what we saw last night. Keeping in mind, there are 10 pitchers on the I. I think the biggest question mark. Hello, hello.
Starting point is 00:15:19 I'm Malcolm Gladwell. host of the podcast Smart Talks with IBM. I recently sat down with IBM's chairman and CEO, Arvin Krishna, and I asked him, how can companies use AI to its fullest potential to create smarter business? My one advice to them, pick areas you can scale. Don't pick the shiny little toys on the side. For example. If anybody has more than 10% of what they had for customer service,
Starting point is 00:15:50 10 years ago, they're already five years behind. If anybody is not using AI to make their developers who write software 30% more productive today, with the goal of being 70% more productive, so we are not asking our clients to be the first experiment on it. We say, you can leverage what we did. We're happy to bring out all our learnings, including what needs to change in the process,
Starting point is 00:16:18 because the biggest change is not technology. is getting people to accept that there's a different way to do things. I'm so blessed to lead an amazing team at United Health Care focusing on the member experience and making that better. I'm Spencer and I'm committed to care. Clint, besides bottom of the order lack of production is middle relief woes. Yeah, to pin the bottom of the lineup thing there, you do get a walk.
Starting point is 00:18:18 I think it's walk and a hit for Lux. No, just a pair of walks for Lux. You got two hits for Pahez. Three RBI, of course, on that, that, that was a pretty homer. Don't, don't give, take anything away from Andy Paz's homer after, you know, Shohei, but that was a pretty homer in that game. To Oscar Hernandez, kind of going through a little bit, Kike, getting in there, getting a hit and whatever.
Starting point is 00:18:38 That's how you win some ball games, give, give some RBI opportunity to people like Muki Betts, two people like Shohei Otani. But enough about that, yeah, the middle relief, it's been a problem. And, yeah, you could, you could point to. 10 guys being on the injured list. And that's where it kind of starts. Most late, most recent Kyle Hurt going on the IL,
Starting point is 00:19:01 another pitcher with shoulder inflammation, joining Bobby Miller, who hit the IL last week. Nick Ramirez, by the way, we see in the tweet there. He's been pretty good in a couple of games since joining the Dodgers from the Yankees. I don't know if I want to throw Ryan Brazier under the bus
Starting point is 00:19:18 already, but Brazier, he's somebody. You want him gone. You want him gone. Since the, since the, in spring training, you know, late signing, uh, did, you know,
Starting point is 00:19:27 join the team very early in spring training and all that, but he just never looked good at any point, uh, in spring training. I think the clock struck midnight on that Cinderella signing for the Dodgers. Every inherited runner he has inherited, has scored the he's also allowing his own runs. It's just it's a, what am I looking for? It's a recipe for disaster for this bullpen. Joe Kelly has his hit and miss moments. We know how that goes.
Starting point is 00:19:53 Evan Phillips. We're going to throw one good thing in there has been phenomenal. But bullpen, it's one of those things like Andrew Friedman says. It will keep you up at night. And I think it's keeping Dodgers fans up at night right now. Well, 103 and a third innings pitch so far, as far as LA relievers are concerned. I mean, they're overworked. That means your starters aren't going deep into the ballgame, with the exception, perhaps, of Tyler Glass now. Obviously, Bobby Miller is now on the IL. Dave Roberts saying it's a little bit of smoke. Well, where there's smoke, there's fire. There's 10 guys on the IL. Nobody is going to feel sorry for the last Angeles daughters. Trust me, having now been back at MLB Network covering all 30 teams,
Starting point is 00:20:28 nobody cares. Walker Bueller, Tony Gonsolin, Bruisedar Gratterall, Clayton Kershaw, Dustin May, Kyle Hurt now, Bobby Miller, Emmett Shee and Blake Trinen, and Connor Brogden. Those are the 10 guys that are on the IL, and there's some big guns in the, you know, on the shelf. But I tell you what, Walker Bueller had his most recent rehab start, Clint on Thursday, couldn't throw strikes, was walking the ballpark, so he's going to need another one. Now, you can look at it from both sides of this, right? You could say, okay, it's not about results, and it's basically his spring training, but you need to make sure that he gets out of their healthy, but is also effective.
Starting point is 00:21:04 Yeah, I understand why they're kind of being a little cautious with him. I think that was one of the worries, the issues early in spring training as well, when we started hearing more about them pushing him back. Dave Roberts usually finds his words, you know, he picks and chooses his words, pretty carefully. And I know we're going to talk more about Walker Bueller with our guest, Jerry Harrison Jr., who will be joining us in a few minutes here on the show. So guys, stay tuned, drop those comments for Jay Hare Dodgers reporter and analyst. But that's one of the things with Bueller is Dave was kind of straight up and saying, like, we don't really like what we're seeing so
Starting point is 00:21:44 far. He's not striking as well as he usually does. The mechanics are a little bit off. And it makes sense. This is a guy who's missed the better part of a year and a half. It takes some time to get the juices flowing again, get back in the rhythm. But it's also been more than a year and a half. So you do start to worry a little bit, maybe. Well, you just don't know what you're going to get. You don't know what you're going to get from a guy coming off the shelf with Tommy John surgery. And let us not forget that this is his second, T.J. So it's interesting to see what's going to happen. I don't want to rush him back, obviously. We're not at that point. The Dodgers still lead the division. It's April 22nd. This is not a panic moment.
Starting point is 00:22:20 but you do want Walker Bueller to be effective. But again, there's a lot of guys that we're counting on to be healthy at some point this season. And the starters need to go deeper into games because the bullpen is overworked and you don't have two massive pieces of your bullpen with Blake Trinen and Bruisedarral on the hill. There's some folks that are pretty hot, Clint, about the lack of production from the bottom of the order. Angelo, Fire horizon has been just, oh, well, that's a pitching question, obviously. Fire-Razen has been disappointing, yes. Clint also wants him D-Fade.
Starting point is 00:22:53 But, I mean, there are people that are, here we go. I wish the Dodgers would start Miggy Row at Shortstop More. This is from Shane Rochester. I don't get why they asked Muky at 31 years old to do it and play Lux at second base. Well, because Lux doesn't have the arm for short right now. But I guess that's why I'm not the manager. Shane, we all are. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:23:15 Yeah, I'll say about Lux. And I do want to ask Jerry about Lux a little bit. I would say Lux doesn't quite have the bat right now to be in the lineup either. But maybe I don't know, maybe that's just a hot take on my side of things. Maybe. But I think the whole reason that they had to move Mookie from right field to the shortstop spot is because Lux didn't have the arm strength or the throws or the accuracy, I should say. And again, maybe he's taken that to the plate and doesn't really have the offense there either. What's your take on?
Starting point is 00:23:45 We can ask Jerry about this too. What is your take on flipping, you know, flipping the script on this lineup a little bit? One thing we talked about the other day on Thursday here on Dodgers territory is the fact that Brian Snicker runs the exact same guys out there all the time for the Atlanta Braves. Is it time to like switch up the order a little bit? So it's funny. This was part of the conversation I had on last week's All Dodgers Thursday show. I don't know where you really make a massive change in this lineup.
Starting point is 00:24:12 If you, you can't take mooky bets out of that lead off spot. He is just too damn good there. show Hay's numbers show you he is incredible as a number two hitter maybe you flip him and Freddie Freeman we know that the the tandem of mookie and freddie at the top of the order does well but beyond that um i mean you can have somebody going over in the nine hole or going over in the seven hole it's still going to be kind of a problem uh i enjoy i like the idea of a spark the idea of a lineup change causing it or you know sparking a team to do something i don't know that that fixes this team right now or helps very much. But if they don't have a very good road trip,
Starting point is 00:24:51 I think it's in the realm of possibility. Is this team missing J.D. Martinez or Justin Turner more than we're giving them credit for? I mean, they, J.D., J.D. was really, really good last year, when healthy, they played, they won 100 games without J.T. last year. I think, if you have Justin Turner in this lineup, who's still getting it very, very much done as he has. approaches 40 years old. I think this would be a very, very different looking lineup if he's playing some third base, moving Max Muncie to second base, where he admits he feels a lot more comfortable, even though Max has played a really, really solid third base. I would just say it's not, it hasn't been a problem there. But to the question, I wouldn't say that they're necessarily
Starting point is 00:25:36 missing those guys. What they're missing is Chris Taylor hitting. What they're missing is Gavin hitting James Outman doing what he was doing last year. and of course, Kike Hernandez kind of adding something a little more consistency to the lineup. So they just need to figure it out. The only real position player on the IL is Hayward. So their guys are healthy. They just need to hit. Got to play Muncie and Outman every day, according to Omar Vargas.
Starting point is 00:26:03 Well, I mean, Muncie pretty much does get to play every day. They've got to start hitting, though. Outman needs to start hitting. I mean, he needs to start getting that production. It'd be interesting to see, and I don't have it in front of me right now, but it would be interesting to see, especially since Mookie has been moved to the infield from the outfield, what the production from the Dodgers outfielder's is based on, you know, in comparison to everybody else in the National League West.
Starting point is 00:26:26 Well, I looked those numbers up last week. This was on Thursday. So obviously they changed. They did not have a very good week weekend did the outfield, but I believe it was something like a 170 batting average from all out three outfield spots. left field was the worst at like 0-74. There's some problems with the production, particularly in the outfield. A little bit back in the chat here, our guy Roy Estrada mentioned, we need to let
Starting point is 00:26:52 Andy Pahas run wild come October. He's going to make it a big five. Andy Pahas got that first hit a little bit of a slow start or slow middle, but hopefully that Homer kind of puts him on the right track to being a difference maker because if he can take the ball and run with it, he will stay in. this lineup. And by the way, it's easy for us to sit back and be, you know, Monday morning quarterback and say, you should be doing this. You should, you know, just hit the ball. See the ball, hit the ball, hit the ball, throw strikes. You know, what are you guys doing? You suck. Boo, you're terrible.
Starting point is 00:27:25 Look at Jackson Holiday of the Baltimore Orioles. You know, the number one prospect in all of baseball. I believe this kid will be an all star. He is so unbelievably talented to go along with very young talent already with the Baltimore Orioles. And he is having one heck of a time at the big league level. I mean, he finally got a hit the other day. And it was a roller that I was like, just please, I was praying that he could run it out. And he's the number one prospect in baseball. And he's going to be very successful. This game is not easy. And it's difficult to make the adjustment at this level. Again, not making excuses, just trying to provide some context of how difficult that this is. All right. So we were able to get my boy, Jerry Harrison, Jr., off of the golf course, which is very difficult.
Starting point is 00:28:11 If you ever follow Jerry on Instagram, he is either A, golfing or B, comparing himself to Denzel Washington. So Jerry is with us now, and I believe he was losing by two strokes to Kyle Loche. Jerry, how is the golf game now since the last time we chat it? Nothing's changed. Kyle, who's driving the golf car right now. My man, Kyle, what's up? Hold on. Yeah, he's currently up two strokes on me. We're at 17.
Starting point is 00:28:42 Kyle's a really good golfer, and I have not made any pucks today so far, so hopefully I finish strong. All right. So your short game is terrible, per usual, as is your long game and your middle game. Do you think that Sunday was a get right game for your boys in blue? 10 to nothing over the Mets? It was a must-needed win. Listen, in April, you never want to say there's must wins, but I think it was a must win. And not only that, guys got healthy, especially swinging the bats.
Starting point is 00:29:11 Anytime you beat the team like the Mets who were red hot, you beat them 10 and nothing, and had your ace, Tyler Glasnow, who absolutely dealt had everything working, you needed to finish that home stand strong to now have an off day today and then go on a road nine-day road trip. Yes, it was a get-right day, a must-needed win for the Dodgers. We're going to be fine, but you still want to. And the homestand on a positive note. Yeah, Jerry, we were talking about this a little bit earlier in the show. You have this get-right game, but it comes on the heels of not the prettiest homest stand we've seen. Do you really need to get off on the right track here on the road to solidify and say that, yeah,
Starting point is 00:29:49 that was a get-right game or was it a flash in the pan? I don't think it was a flash in a pan. The team's too talented. You got to remember it's April. This team, especially a lot of guys in wins. Make no mistake about it, everybody knows. It's the Dodgers, especially what they did this offseason. It's World Series of us, not getting to the World Series, winning the World Series.
Starting point is 00:30:13 They understand that. So sometimes in April, you're going to have some lulls. Sometimes throughout the regular season, when it's June, July, or August, you're going to have a week, 10 days where it's just not going to be there. Freddie Freeman is starting to swing the bat extremely well. He really had the last two games, squaring balls up. We know Shoy the Tannies swinging the bat extremely well. So with this talent, as long as they stay healthy, they will be in the thick of things, but make no mistake about it. It's all about the 11 wins in the postseason.
Starting point is 00:30:43 Hello, hello, I'm Malcolm Gladwell, host of the podcast Smart Talks with IBM. I recently sat down with IBM's chairman and CEO, Arvin Krishna. And I asked him, how can companies use AI to its fullest potential to create smarter business? My one advice to that. Big areas you can scale. Don't pick the shiny little toys on the side. For example. If anybody has more than 10% of what they had for customer service 10 years ago,
Starting point is 00:31:17 they're already five years behind it. If anybody is not using AI to make their developers who write software 30% more productive today, with the goal of being 70% more productive. Yeah. Wow. So we are not asking our clients to be the first experiment on it. We say you can leverage what we did. We're happy to bring out all our learnings,
Starting point is 00:31:41 including what needs to change in the process, because the biggest change is not technology, is getting people to accept that there's a different way to do things. To listen to the full conversation, visit IBM.com slash smart talks. Fidelity active ETFs have the flexibility to shift and transform as markets do the same. Starting point is 00:32:59 NYS E, SIPC. I'm Brian. I work at UDOT Healthcare. So Brian, why do you care? I care because I don't want to anybody behinds. I oversee one of the biggest resource center in United Healthcare. I see people walked in in my office every day just like my parents. They have no idea about the health care. I feel like they are my uncles, aunties. I treated people like family. I'm Brian and I'm committed to care. And Jerry to get there they're gonna need Walker Bueller. He didn't have the best most recent rehab outing obviously did not throw strikes. Dave didn't like the command, didn't saw what he didn't like what he saw, how important all the results of what he's going through right now?
Starting point is 00:33:44 I mean, it's basically spring training for Walker. It is. And Alana, you know this. You just said it's spring training for him. It's hard for guys that been in the big leagues and have thrived in the big leagues to get on a minor league rehab knowing, you know what, this doesn't really mean anything. Guys are working on stuff. They're trying not to get hurt as opposed to going out there competing.
Starting point is 00:34:08 So it's a fine line. Being a guy like a Walker Bueller, making sure that he gets his work in, make sure he spots his fastball, work on his breaking ball if it needs to, knowing that it's AAA baseball, and he knows that he's needed not just throughout the regular season, but in the postseason. So we're not worried about Walker. We know it's spring training for him. We just want to make sure once he gets to the big leagues, he hits the ground running, and he's going to be in the rotation the rest of the season.
Starting point is 00:34:34 Jerry, you mentioned the talent on this team. They added an insane talent level with Shohei Otani in the offseason. Talk a little bit about what this guy is doing coming off of major elbow surgery and kind of what you think he's adding to the clubhouse so far. You know, the adding to the clubhouse thing, I didn't realize he was that much of a jokester. You know, listen, I go on the clubhouse every once in a while. I'm around the guys every once around the batting cage.
Starting point is 00:35:04 just seeing him on TV, seeing him around the guys, he's got a kangrafy junior type of kid in him. What I mean by that, he's always smiling, joking. When I played with Junior or with the Reds, I was like, man, this guy's always smiling. He's always in a good mood. And I just remember a couple guys saying, wouldn't you be in a good mood when you had that swing? I think that's what was show Haletani. He's always in a good move because, I mean, does anybody have his talent, his ability? You know, hits the ball 450 feet when he's right. He throws a 100 miles an hour has a devastating slider. So there's a reason why he's always in a good mood, always in a joyous mood.
Starting point is 00:35:41 He's in a great environment like the Dodgers. He's got a chance to win, not just this year for years to come. He loves the guy he's playing with. So he's always smiling, always in a good mood. And he's definitely brought that sense of child life glow in him in that clubhouse. We're talking with Jerry Hirston, Jr., who's in his 11th season covering the Dodgers on SportsNet, L.A., obviously 16 years in the show. Richard Flores wants to know why the Dodgers
Starting point is 00:36:07 pool their best hitters, Jerry, when facing a left-hander. Well, usually they like the matchup. You know, they go to the lefty-righty matchup. So if there's lefties on the mound, they'll make sure a guy like a Kike Hernandez gets in the lineup who hits left-handed pitching. They make sure a guy like Tiaska Hernandez hits further up in the order
Starting point is 00:36:27 because he crushes left-handed pitching. So they like to mix and match, play the percentages. They usually have guys that they'll face the left-handed pitcher. They're from the right side and vice versa. So we got another comment here from commenter Joe Mama. This is Dodgers got to quit trying to swing for the fences. Do you think this is a team that's maybe a little too worried about that big fly
Starting point is 00:36:49 when you could maybe just move the ball forward, keep the line moving? I think when you have a run on third base, less than two outs, you got to shore it up a little bit. There's nothing wrong going for the bomb, hitting the home, We want guys driving the baseball. That's okay, but certain situations you want to be able to put the ball in play. I think there's been too much swing and miss. The guys will tell you that with a runner on third base or the base is loaded less than two out.
Starting point is 00:37:16 You've got to be able to put the ball in play. Then, once you do that, put the ball on play, then you can go for the long ball. But guys are going to hit enough home runs. They realize that. But the main thing is execution, especially when you get to the post season. You're going to be facing guys number one, two, and three starters. You've got to be able to put the ball in key situations. Jerry, you have an original super utility.
Starting point is 00:37:37 And now we have a couple of those guys with Chris Taylor and Kike Hernandez, obviously on the team. But we do need some production out of the bottom part of that order. What is your take on how these guys can stay in their rhythm, stay with their timing, but we need a, we need a both there, a bit of juice there from the bottom. Well, make no mistake about it. If you're going to be a championship ball club,
Starting point is 00:37:58 you've got to have one through nine be tough foul. The bottom of a lineup is off to a slow start. I don't even want to say they're struggling. They're off to a slow start. They know they need to be better. A guy like a Gavin Lux, he missed, what, a little over a year? He missed the entire season last year. It's really a year and a half of playing competitive baseball, big league baseball.
Starting point is 00:38:17 So I think he's going to find his footing very shortly. James Outman has squared up a lot of baseballs. He's had nothing to show for it. I think Miguel Ross is off to a really good start swinging the bat. So is Austin Barnes. yes the numbers are a little bit glaring they're not hitting the way they're capable of i still think it's early those guys will be fine Gavin lux is about the balls guy he's going to hit around 270 280 once he gets his footing in i really believe james outman well you know some of those hard hit
Starting point is 00:38:45 balls are going to find uh land in the outfield hey hey jerry we noticed you you haven't hit a shot yet you put yourself before on this hole or what's the plan well i'm going to tell we're on a part five here. I'm going to tell Kyle, just give me the eagle. That way, if he parsed it, we're even going on 18. He knows that he's able to use this as an excuse. I think he's just off the green into the buck. He just hit a great shot. Probably right now 10 feet from the cup. So hopefully he misses this putt, and then we're tied going into 18. I feel badly that we're taking over your golf game. I do appreciate the time, Jerry, as we talk to you here on Dodgers territory, before we let you go, Is Tyler Glasnow the new stopper that Clayton Kursa used to be?
Starting point is 00:39:31 I'm going to say yes. He only had one bad outing and he had terrible flu-like sifters. We didn't think he'd take the hill, but he wanted to post. He wanted to take the ball. The Nationals really swung the bat extremely well against him. If you take the way that starts, he has been dominant. Listen, facing a Red Hot Mets team yesterday and just completely shutting them down, that just goes to show when he's on his A game, he's as good as it gets.
Starting point is 00:39:58 So I believe Alana that we got a variety of stoppers. But Tyler Glass now, right now is number one. Once we get Bobby Miller healthy, once we get Walker Bueller healthy, and obviously Clayton Kirschon, who's on his way back sometime in late July, early August, we're going to have a pretty good rotation to go along with Yamamoto to go along with the rest of our guys. Gavin Stone has really been solid as well. So we should be in good shape heading in not just the next couple months, but heading into September October.
Starting point is 00:40:30 Jerry, last one before we let you pull a ball out of the pocket, drop it close to the hole there. The big storyline entering the season was Mookie Betts, moving to shortstop. We've seen about a month of Mookie Betts as the starting shortstop. What are your takeaways there? And do you think, I don't want to call it an experiment, but do you think this is going to last the entirety of the season? should it last the entirety of the season?
Starting point is 00:40:56 Last I checked, I think Buki was, you know, I think top five and defensive run saved at shortstop. He came up as an infieler. He made himself into an incredible right field. In my eyes, probably the best right field, the best defense of right fielder I've seen. I never saw Roberto Clemente. But for him going back to the infield, it's no surprise that he's thriving there at shortstop. One of the best athletes, not best baseball players, one of the best athletes in sports today.
Starting point is 00:41:23 Anytime you doubt Mookie Betts, I wouldn't do so. He's just that good of an athlete. Yeah, best athlete in the game, no doubt about it. Jerry Harrison, Jr., 16 years in the show, not the best golf game, but one of the best people in the world. Thanks so much for, uh-oh, hey, Kyle. Did I just burdied that hole? Did I birded that hole?
Starting point is 00:41:41 You didn't even play the hole. What? You didn't even play the hole. You just bogey. They're giving me a bogey on that. Unbelievable. I will take the responsibility for your bogey. That's on me.
Starting point is 00:41:53 Jerry Harrison, Jr., thanks so much for being with us. We always appreciate you, my friend. He's the best. Jerry Harrison, Jr. does a great job covering this club. And Clint and I, obviously, always appreciate when we can get the Sportsnet, L.A. broadcasters on the program as well. All right, Clint, it is time for last licks. All right, we have a sweet, sweet pup.
Starting point is 00:42:20 Her name is flower. She was found as a stray in the Compton, California area. Look at her ears. They're so sweet. For those of you that are listening right now on the podcast, here at Dodgers territory. Make sure you go to the YouTube page and like and subscribe so you can just have the beautiful glory of looking at Flowers' ears. She's safe right now, but she's staying with a Good Samaritan, unfortunately just in her backyard because she can't bring her inside.
Starting point is 00:42:46 We're trying to avoid flower to go. We don't want her to go to a shelter. She's about six months old. Her vet care will be taken care of. She will be microchipped because of my foundation, gidreesgarden.org. If you would like more information on flower, she's a beautiful, fully black and white mixed breed. Check us out at giddreysguardian.org. Guys, if you need to add a pup to the family, they say adopt, don't shop. And that looks like an adorable doggot to add to the household. What do you got going on tonight? Well, while we're talking more Dodgers, talking about more with this lineup.
Starting point is 00:43:22 And I might not do Monday overreactions because we are coming off of a win. I say we very liberally. But join us 6 p.m. All Dodgers with Clint Paseas here on YouTube. We also got a podcast as well. So subscribe there.
