That is one Mr. James Tibbs, the third, could be getting called up. Welcome to a Monday edition of Dodgers Territory. I am Clint Paseas. And look who's back. It's Riz in the flesh. Hi, guys. You didn't die. You didn't explode.

We're proud of you for that. Katie is because of reasons not with us today. But, oh, geez, we're here. I know. We are. What's up, you guys? Good to be back. I had a wonderful vacation to Italy. I don't really like the way that the win-loss record went down while I was gone, so I take full responsibility. But let's get to

and happy to be back with you guys. Clint, what's up? You know, we're good. I'm happy to have you back. You know, I hate doing this thing by myself sometimes. We had some good shows, but we had some bad play with the Dodgers. And we are done with the month of August. And we're going to talk about that. We're going to grade some things. Talk about that series. Come out of Detroit here with a mound visit. Tommy. I don't give a shit you feel good. There's four months' hits up there. Tommy getting us warmed up for, I mean, it's not all positives.

In fact, there are a few positives to take out of the month of August. Where I say here on the screen, the Dodgers barely survive the month of August. Some positives, though. You take two or three out of Detroit. I know obviously you're not going to be paying a whole bunch of attention. You paid enough attention to what's going on while you were away. and you saw the Dodgers offense wake up a little bit on Sunday, six to one victory. You had a Tay Oscar home run in there.

Maybe that's something that kind of gets them going. What's kind of your pulse of how the team has been playing? Well, I have to be honest. I wasn't watching every single out, every single pitch. But I was trying to get the clip notes when I was in Italy. We are nine hours ahead of Pacific time in Italy. So I was doing the best I could to be able to figure out what the Dodgers were doing. but I was paying attention, of course, to the scores, and I was paying attention to the standings.

And what I have to say is, okay, I was gone basically 10 days. They were six and four in their last 10, okay? So that's not horrible. It wasn't necessarily beautiful, but they still have a nine and a half game lead in the division, Clint. So that I'm very happy about. So that was good to come home to because I feel like they didn't lose any standings or any, you know, spot in the division as far as that is concerned. Now, I'm still a little bit, even though they have a plus 153 run differential, I'm still a little bit nervous, I guess, about some, you know, offensive woes, some lackadaisical offense.

I think getting Will Smith back in the fold is going to be a good thing, although you never know what's going to happen in terms of timing and that sort of thing. So I'm psyched about that. I'm psyched about getting him back. I'm psyched that the calendar is switching to September 1st. I've been scoreboard watching and standing watching since the season started. And once the calendar switches to September 1st, then I really start paying attention because I really feel like every single game matters.

And you're still trying to kind of jockey for that number one seed. You're still trying to play for home field advantage. So this Clint is when things get really, really interesting to me. And of course, we can expect some additions to the rosters. more on that in a moment. But I don't know, how would you assess the way that they played the last 10, 12 games? It's not great. Definitely not great there.

The road trip, just kind of buttoning up that road trip, you know, two and four through Atlanta and Detroit, you had to take, you had a, you can't get swept in Atlanta, especially if you were trying to earn that first round by. Atlanta went on a heater. You know, now all of a sudden they've rattled off seven wins in a row. And while they are tied record. wise, unfortunately, by virtue of the Braves having a better record against the Dodgers in a head-to-head matchup, they, the Braves would have that second round, or that first round by, that second

by seed there. And if the season were to end today, how about this? The Dodgers would play the Diamondbacks in a wild card series. And Alana, I don't think anybody, I know the Dodgers don't want that. You can't lose control of that two seed. and that important buy round. Luckily, there is still a month to play. But in August, they continued a trend of just poor play that started in the month of July.

And what's wild, you know, you mentioned the run differential. This is a team that usually puts some points on the board looking at like their month-by-month-run total. It's like 140, 150, 160. In September, sorry, in July, they scored 105 runs. in August, they scored 104 runs. That's not great. And you combine it with the bullpen struggling at times. And, you know, just it's one of those lulls.

It happens. It sucks. We all kind of lose our shit when it happens. But then, like I was telling people, what would Alana be saying if she was here? It's going to be great. It's going to be great. Well, I have to think that they're going to figure it out when it matters the most. I think when you have a team, Clint, that has won back.

back-to-back World Series championships, they understand the peril that can happen to you in a short series. But they also understand how difficult it is to get through 162. And I really feel like this is a team that because of the experience, because of the roster, because they've been there and done that the last two years, I really feel like when it's crunch time and it is time to go, they will have it all figured out. And they will be just fine. One thing I do want to talk about a little bit more, though, is as far as the August recap and grades are concerned, Let's talk a little bit about the pitching for a second.

So team ERA, as you pointed out in our rundown, 3.69 ERA starting pitching 3.86, bullpen 3.40, all top numbers. But the good news is they have been much better as of late. So just speaking from a pitching perspective, what would your grade be overall bullpen, then starting staff, then staff as a whole? Yeah, I mean, like I said, there's. there's some stuff to be desired. You would like a little bit more consistency. And pitching-wise, you got a lot more as the month trudged along. I think adding Tyler Glasnow back to the mix, another adult in that rotation helped out a whole bunch. Roki Sasaki was really good until that blister kind of popped up on him. But I think for both the starting pitching,

probably starting pitching for me is about a B-minus just because of the totality of the month. some struggles in there took Terrick Scouble a little bit of time to turn into their dominant Terrick Scubal Yamamoto was was mostly you know incredible in there no show hey talk about that probably more this week and then bullpen wise I was torn between like a C C plus but there's much much room for improvement again better lately which kind of you know changed that curve kind of brought that grade up a little bit because if you had asked me a week ago, I might have said angrily an F, maybe a D, but the good thing is right now, Riz, they are trending. This team is trending in the right direction. Pitching wise, getting your guys back

and all that kind of stuff. I agree with you. All right, back to the offense for a hot second, circling back. 6-8-9 team OPS. That is 10th worst Clint in Major League Baseball. And I feel like you and I and Katie have talked about the fact that it just doesn't seem like the offense has had that, you know, that power-packed offense that you would think a roster that has these names on it would give you. I mean, 91 WRC plus, just a 241 average as a team, only 104 run scored total in the month of August. You gave them a C-minus defendant. You see more. I need to see consistency out of that offense. You need to see power back. You know, if you want to see this team win, they win on homers and they had a road trip where they had two homers on the road trip.

That's just not Dodger baseball. You're seeing seeing guys roll over to the right, left-handed batterers roll over to the right side a lot. You're seeing a lot of pop-up. You're seeing a lot of strikeout. When they have moments to capitalize, you know, runner on third, less than two outs, you're seeing a lot more strikeout than you need to be seeing. You need to see a sack fly in there. So I feel honestly maybe even generous going with a C minus offensively. But we need to see a lot more of what we saw on Sunday, but a lot more than that.

You need to see them actually be the ones that manufacture and generate the runs, not have a couple of gift runs given to you through wild pitches like we saw in that final game in Detroit. But much more than to improve. That's what they were just saying in the chat someplace. they were gifted a couple of runs. So you can't really necessarily think that the offense is great when they were gifted a couple of runs. But that's because of bad defense on the other side.

So being that said, how about the defense, some uncharacteristic, uncharacteristic rather sloppiness over the course of the month, but you're giving them a B. Again, when you get to the postseason, it's going to come down to hopefully really good pitching and incredibly good defense. Just asked the Yankees a couple of years ago

how important it is to play fundamentally, sound defensive baseball. You gave them a B for the month of August. Tell me more. I mean, looking really in the outfield, you know, you lose Andy Pahez, so you're playing a man down, you're playing without your best defensive center fielder. That has some effect. Alec Thomas has filled in nicely. But on the corners, we know what you get with Teosker Hernandez on defense. Usually he's somebody who needs to provide more offensive thump to make us kind of just, you know, blind ourselves to the defensive troubles out there in left field. Sometimes he's locked in.

Other times you see some crazy routes or not some, not the best of routes, not the best of first steps. And then also, Kyle Tucker, you've seen a few, there's a few plays that I would imagine Dave Roberts would say they should have been made. Mookie's throws, I mean, God bless Freddie Freeman for being the vacuum. that man is at first base. But yeah, Mookie,

you know, as good, he's been fantastic. I don't want to say I'm not trashing Mookie at all. He has been fantastic with the glove and really good throws

for the greater part at shortstop because they're not turning into errors, but he is throwing a little wild at times. You see, and just some different things. We saw Munchy kind of bobble a ball

off his head in the game yesterday. Just, you know, they got to clean it up. I think that's just part of the dog days of summer, all of the travel. Luckily, you got a nice long homestand coming up here to get things in order. But still, they're not playing as bad as those Yankees that you mentioned there. So I'll give them a B.

As those Yankees did in that 24 World Series, we still need to send a fruit basket to Aaron Judge. And I guess Anthony Rizzo for not. And, well, yeah. Anthony, Anthony, for not backing up first. Garrett for not going over there. Covering, yeah, you know. All of the things, all of the things. But I will say this.

Despite, and I know fans that are spending their hard-earned money don't want to hear this. And I can appreciate it. And without the fans, the Dodgers are nothing. And if you're spending all that money, you want them to perform well. But you do have to clean it up. But I will say this is literally the dog days of summer, right? I mean, the calendar tomorrow switched to September 1st.

This has to get cleaned up. And I do believe that it absolutely will. And despite the fact that the Dodgers only had a 240 collective batting average at just 104 runs scored, if you take a look, Clint, at all of the run differentials across the league, AL and NL, the Dodgers, with the exception of the Milwaukee Brewers, have the highest run differential of every single team, including every single team in the American League, which we're not that surprised by because the American League this year is not that great. However, despite just a 240 average, only the Brewers, who of course are leading the NL Central, who have the tiebreaker with the Dodgers.

Plus 177 is their run differential. The Dodgers are at plus 153. The Braves are at plus 117. Those are your three division winners right now. So despite just a 240 average, the offense is still pretty dang good. We're scoring a lot more runs than we're giving up. And you can't really complain about pitching over the course of the first of the the month of August, but we got to get it together. You have to be able to lengthen the lineup

a little bit. You got to get more guys on base. You got to make sure you're playing sound defense. And obviously, the pitching has to continue to be good. So all right, September 1st, we love it. I'll take it. And as you mentioned, a hot homestand coming up. Three against the Cardinals, three against the nationals, and three against the Reds before finally a day off. And then they head to Florida to take on the Miami Marlins. All right. And maybe. And maybe.

Well, there's at least one fresh face coming back. Will Smith returns to the Dodgers lineup on Tuesday. And maybe, maybe a prospect coming up. We're going to talk about that next. But we do have to hear. Are we going to talk about that next? And I'm sorry for my audio issues. Like, I don't know what my mic's doing.

The next time the Dodgers play, they're going to have at least two more players on the position. At least it sounds like two more players on the position player side. We also assume they could call up.

a pitcher, things are somewhat in the air there. But one addition is obvious. And Lana, you are getting William Dills Smith back in the lineup. So that is massive there. You're getting a World Series hero, not an MVP, but an All-Star. Just a clutch bat, calm, cool, collected addition to that roster. So that is fun, but where it gets really fun is Dave Roberts yesterday, and we'll hear a clip from Dave about it. Katie is actually the one. Katie Wu is the one who asked him about, you know,

potentially calling up somebody from the minor leagues to, you know, buoy the offense a little bit and act as a potential platoon for Tay Oscar Hernandez in right field or in left field who has been struggling. So let's listen to Dave real quick and then we'll come back and kind of digest it all. Dissect. No, right now, I don't know who we're going to call up. I think, well, I'm sure we'll talk about it tomorrow. My assumption, it'll be a left-handed bat. So whether we carry three catchers or we bring up a guy from AAA. But if there's, you know, I'll talk to the hitting guys.

I'll talk to the front office. And then I'll ultimately make a decision on what's the best for, you know, our ball club for Teo. But again, he's still a big part of it regardless. A couple things in there. Teo, it sounds like, is earning a little bit less playing time, kind of rightfully so. It has been a struggle bus of a season for him. But for Dave to say, left-hand hitting outfielder from AAA, for the people clamoring for Josue de Paula, he's at double A.

It will not be JDP. Left-handed hitting outfielder that is currently on the 40-man roster would be one Ryan Ward, which would be, I love Wardo, be the most boring edition possible. The other name, and we're seeing rumors swirl around on the social media, that is one Mr. James Tibbs, the third, who's had a fantastic year at AAA.

Could be getting called up. I don't know. What do you think about this kind of September call-up being a rookie route? That's okay. I'm okay with that. Here's the deal with the September call-up now it's been a few years now that they haven't brought up the entire you know 40 man to be in the

clubhouse when september first hit so now if you're going to bring somebody up clint and we know that obviously will smith is coming off of the iL so what does that mean does that mean benny biceps is gone does that mean hunter fiducius gone does that mean um dalton rushing is gone obviously not um but what does that mean in terms of getting will smith uh back into the the the full Okay, that's the obvious. So then you could potentially have two other new faces coming up tomorrow because you can only bring up two guys. So I love the James Tibb the third play

because I think it will ingest some really needed spark into this team right now. Obviously he has been crushing it at the AAA level. He was drafted a couple of years ago, an average almost to 300. He's hitting 27 bombs, 96 rubies. I mean, those are the numbers that you want. to see right now and you want some new life you want a new light in that lineup um give him a chance come up here see what you can do um i love wardo of course but we've kind of already you know

been there done that and i think the fan base not that you make decisions based on what the fans want i'm not suggesting that if you did that you'd never win a world series championship um but i do think it would be a a positive move for the dodgers to make to have him come up see what he can do give him a little bit of a runway, as Dave likes to say, he's going to have a runway, give him a little bit of that, and just see what the kid can do. If it doesn't work out, it's not the end of the world. You don't have that many expectations, but you'd love to see what he can do at this level, considering what he has been doing at AAA.

So I love the move. And I'm not saying that we have definitely heard some folks say that that is going to be the move, people that we know and trust, nothing for certain. Nothing is certain, yeah. But I would not be surprised. I would not be surprised if he was in that clubhouse tomorrow. Yeah, like you said, I agree with the fact that you inject, you know, some different offense to that clubhouse into that lineup. He has been hot at AAA.

He has earned this opportunity. No doubt he has earned this opportunity. It also, you know, kind of breeds competition amongst the outfielders. You know, Kyle Tucker, nothing should, I don't care if you're making $60 million. Nothing is just given to you. A spot in the starting lineup come October needs to be earned. Because when you get to October, you know, you just plug Kikei Hernandez in anywhere, and Kektober happens.

Maybe James Tibbs, you know, is kind of this year's. We haven't seen this in a little over a decade where a prospect has come up and kind of knocked the incumbent out of their spot. But last time we saw this, and I've talked about it already on my All-Dodger show a few times. Last time we saw this is Corey Seeger, 2015. Jimmy Rollins was the starting shortstop that entire season come October, the best hitting prospect at AAA for the team, gets the call up, takes over in September, and then is riding his way to eventually becoming a World Series and postseason hero for the Dodgers.

James Tibbs the third, to sprinkle a little bit of caution and, you know, I don't want to overinflate those numbers that you do see with Tibbs. Yes, he's had a fantastic season. some holes in the game there is some swing and miss which happens in this day and age but you know you look at the numbers Riz you mentioned him 295 27 bombs 96 RBI the six 965 OPS so the dude that's earned this he has earned this opportunity and what better time than now to bring him up now what you do mention though the roster crunch you know will will needs a a spot

on the active roster. The roster as it stands is at 48 players with eight on the 60 day IL. So those eight don't count towards the 40 man, of course, one of those guys being Will Smith. There's a few different ways. You can get creative if they wanted to like put Will Klein on the 60 day, transfer him to the 60 day aisle. You could open up a spot there. Boring, but I would understand it. Ben Roort Vet, a guy who obviously I was clamoring for a whole bunch, he has been outplayed by Hunter for Dusha, and Fetty has absolutely earned the playing time. So hat tip to Benny Biceps,

but taking Will Smith and giving him playing time over RoortVet and, you know, you would have to heart. I mean, of course. Will's going to be put in there every single day until it's proven that he, you know, he needs the day off. But yeah, I mean, he, this is not a situation of like, oh, does Will Smith have to earn playing time? Absolutely not.

Absolutely not. The only reason you kind of have a little bit of pause with it is because he has missed the last three months and change or whatever with this neck issue. So if you don't feel like he is fully ready to go or like something could be re-aggravated in that neck, there's no reason to carry three catchers. But if you have any sort of concerns, then that's where I think they're kind of, you know, they're in meetings today. They're figuring some things out that they being the Dodgers Brain Trust. But, yeah, of the other options that could be, you know, the odd men out, none of them are popular, but, or at least popular amongst the organization. L.A. Al J.A. Al J.A. Thomas could be DFAid if you're already going to have another left-handed outfielder. But Alana, the thing is, James Tibbs does not play centerfield.

Alec Thomas plays centerfield. Kyle Tucker does not play centerfield to Oscar Hernandez outside of that one random time that he did in the post or in the, the All-Star game does not play center field. I don't think they're going to move off of Thomas right now when you don't have a clear center field option. What do you think? Well, I mean, as you mentioned, Alec Thomas is the only true center fielder on the roster, right? So I don't know that he's going anywhere as far as that is concerned. I mean, do they DFA, Ryan Ward or Alex call to open a 40-man spot?

I don't know. Here's the one thing that's interesting. And calm down. We're just spitball in here, people. What about what about his son Kim? Could he be a DFA, a DFA, but not likely to be an option? I mean, I mean, he's, this is a guy that we had so much hope for. And he hasn't really gotten a stranglehold on a major league spot where he's playing every single day and forcing the issue to be in there offensively.

So he's owed a lot of money. So, I mean, that may be not be, that may not be in play there. But I mean, Alfonso's obvious for Will Smith. You know, Will Smith is a much easier bet or guess Ben Wirtbett, Elias, or Alfonso. But for Tibbs' thought, as you mentioned, it's a much tougher decision. There's also some options in terms of DFA's. Paul Jervase, Landen Nack, Ronan Kopp. I mean, you mentioned would Will Klein go to the 60-day IL?

I mean, he hasn't pitched since July 31st, but he could be activated in time for the playoffs. So I don't know, you tell me. Yeah, again, this is one of the things. And, you know, I feel like we've talked at least the last two years about a roster crunch for this team. And that's going to continue into the postseason. That's going to continue into the off season and all that. Difficult conversations are going to be had to kind of extrapolate more on the Hessong Kim. I talked about, we talked about him last night on all Dodgers as a potential to be DFAed.

Because, listen, as likable as he is as a character. speedy, great defender, does not have a bat, does not carry a bat. Even at AAA, you know, I think he's got like a 270 average in a very hitter-friendly league and on base around 3.30 or something like that. He's not in this day and age. There's no power in his game. In this day and age, he's just not doing enough to earn playing time at the major league level, let alone with the Los Angeles Dodgers. it would be bold. You know, you mentioned he's owed a lot of money. It's not a massive amount of money, but they do have him, you know, under team control for a while.

And that's the thing that makes us a little more difficult where if it's, if it's, you know, you have to pick between Ryan Ward and and Hesson Kim, I think they would lean the Ward route just because they clearly don't have plans for him. He's not necessarily the next big thing coming up for the Dodgers as we're. Kim has options. He has speed. He has defense. That could play a factor. We've seen it play a factor for this team in October. I don't think they would use that roster spot again that way this year. But tough conversations to be had. I see somebody in the chat saying the eye that Clint hates Hassan Kim. I don't hate Hassan Kim. It's just he's not a great Major League hitter. That's what it is. And he's also not a great AAA hitter. He has. He has. has no power, fast, funny, skin care routine on point. Yeah, I mean, maybe he's a, maybe he is a pinch runner in the postseason because he's fast, or if we ever make a position called a defensive, like a designated defender, there you go. That would be, that would be fun. I mean, they need to make more roster spots.

Why not? Just do that. But yeah, tough conversations we had, but back to Tibbs, if he is the guy getting called up, if they don't go the boring route and bring him up, I think it's fun. I think it's exciting. I think it injects, like you said, you know, some sort of just excitement. Something to look forward to in a month that's going to drag. You know what I mean until we get to the postseason.

And he's earned the opportunity. Let's see what he can do at this level. If nothing else, it's something for entertainment purposes and you give the kid a chance. All right. He just seems very comfortable in the role. And not a lot of guys can do that immediately after they step off of the playing field because they kind of feel like they're still there. They don't want to talk about their teammates like that. But I thought he added a lot to the broadcast.

What did you think about it? Yeah, I mean, 22 was fantastic in the booth there with Joe. And luckily, you know, we've heard over the years. The rapport of those two have whenever he joins, you know, him and Bulldog on a broadcast or had joined in the past, him and Bulldog. dog on the broadcast, but he's a natural. He's natural. He's a storyteller. He's got things he can say real easy. He add a lot to the game. And also, he comes with a lot of stuff. He comes with hardware, experience, World Series rings. You're talking about an MVP, a Cy Young Award,

what, three World Series rings on his shelf. All-Star games played with this organization for, for 20 years as a professional, he brings a lot, a lot to the booth. And it's a fresher perspective with all due respect to, you know, oral or let's say Jay Hare, who's not part of that, but Nomar, E.K., I mean, Caros hasn't played for the Dodgers since 2002 as where Kirsch just hung up to spikes last year. So I really appreciate that kind of different perspective. No doubt. I love what he brings to the table and he takes it seriously, which I appreciate too. Not everybody does. And a lot of folks, don't realize how hard it is to do what we do,

to get in front of a microphone and in front of a camera and to talk about the game. Just because you play it, it doesn't mean you can talk about it professionally and with grace. So anyway, just wanted to say shout out to Kirsch for that. He'll probably end up going into the baseball Hall of Fame too as a broadcaster, just because that's who Kershaw is.
