Starting point is 00:01:30 to have, if he does go to AAA to open the season, you have for Sari, you have Bodie as non-rastered invitees fighting for that final spot. And to me, it comes down to versatility. Good afternoon, everybody, and welcome to a brand new live, fresh edition of Dodgers Territory. I'm Alonar Rizzo. That is Clint Paseas. We love the new look. We love that you're with us. Thanks for being here. Rate us five stars. Like, subscribe, tell your friends. By the way, we have a special guest today, Amelia May, the wife of the Hurler, Dustin May is going to be joining us today. We're going to talk about just what the process has been like.
Starting point is 00:02:13 I'm trying to get Dustin back on the mound, how much of a part of his rehab she's taking place in, and just what it's like being a wife of a major league ball player and all the ups and downs that go along with that. So looking forward to talking to Amelia here momentarily. But before that, let's talk about some big guns, Freddie Freeman, as well as Shohei Otani getting their Cactus League action. Let's start with the big ticket.
Starting point is 00:02:34 Let's do it. No need to panic. I'm sure you're panicking and wanting to throw your stuff. off the tallest roof in Los Angeles. Don't worry, my friend. Just because the Dodgers are 2 and 5 in Cactus League play does not mean that Andrew Friedman should get fired, that Dave Roberts should not get an extension, that we should DFA, Freeman, Betts, Otani, Edmonds, all the things.
Starting point is 00:02:58 Freddie Freeman is going to get into action today. He's going to be the DH against the Colorado Rockies. Will Smith is going to play on Friday. This from David Basset does a great job on AM 570. And by the way, Shoahe Otani is going to DH tomorrow against your favorite. favorite team. The angels were in Anaheim. So we're going to start seeing some of the key parts of this puzzle come together in Cactus League action. Dodgers getting healthier. We can put down the fires, the torches and pitchforks. Things are going to be okay. The two and five Dodgers,
Starting point is 00:03:32 you know, don't write them off yet. They'll write off those World Series hopes yet. Another thing, I don't know if you saw this one. We're looking at the screen still of Shohei Otani getting back in the lineup. He was also working. on not injuring that shoulder anymore. The Dodgers posting this. The no arm slide. Yeah, posting that on TikTok, the TikTok, whatever the kids call it these days, that pose at the end there.
Starting point is 00:03:53 That is just, he is, he is an absolute showman for sure. But to see Shohei Otani, ideally not get injured for this team, that's a thumbs up to me for sure. Yeah, yeah, thumbs up, Shohei. And yes, the showmanship is a lot of fun too, but it's important that they practice that stuff. It's all about those fundamentals. It's all about doing things.
Starting point is 00:04:12 right way, all the little aspects of the game. What are you looking forward to in terms of seeing Freddie out there, in terms of seeing Will Smith out there? Show Hey, obviously, as a DH, won't pitch until May in the big leagues, but anything in particular you're looking for? No, I mean, I want to see Freddie feel good with the swing. Of course, his swing was often on at different points last season. He felt really, really dang good when it got to World Series time, even if the body didn't feel super great but i want to see friday back in this lineup i would love to see will uh kind of put the pieces back together a bit of a down season in 2024 as he was dealing with an apparent ankle injury that dave roberts said maybe affected his swing a good little bit here and there uh don't like
Starting point is 00:04:56 that too much which they would i mean i don't know if it needed something you know some sort of medical repair or whatever uh operation but it did not i think they call that surgery yeah I think they call medical repairs. It's 10 in the morning for me. So, you know, the day is still young and coffee is barely kicking in. But getting those guys back in line up. And then, of course, showtime back at the top. It's just going to feel like a more complete lineup.
Starting point is 00:05:22 And then we start to look at more of the, it's good that these guys are out because it's given some other guys an opportunity to shine. One guy we're hearing a lot more about David Bodie, of course, non-raster invitee. he could be playing his way into a role. Who's kind of standing out in your opinion so far early in spring? Well, I can understand why you would mention David Bodie, because here's his numbers so far. Again, you take spring training numbers positively or negatively with a grain of salt.
Starting point is 00:05:52 It's spring training. All right, but he is, that being said, he is fighting for a job. 12ABs is 677 average, 667 rather, one home run, six rubies, and an OPS of 1.775. So the thing about Bodie that I like is that he's versatile, right? Every time we talk about the Dodgers, we talk about versatility. It's the V for versatility, not the V for victory. David Bodie said he worked with the Dodgers hitting group to make some changes to his swing.
Starting point is 00:06:18 They identified them before signing him and presented what they were seeing. And Bodie agreed. But when you're looking for a job, you're probably going to agree, right? They're hitting coaches were a big reason why he joined the Dodgers. And I get that. This is from I, Blake Williams, tweeting this earlier yesterday. But another guy that perhaps, and I didn't really understand the signing, but why not? I mean, if you can sign a guy, let's do it and see what they can give you at spring training
Starting point is 00:06:40 is Eddie Rosario. I mean, he's kind of turning heads, Clint. I mean, he's left-handed. They don't have a ton of other options there. It would be a whole right-handed bench if they didn't sign him. Too early to pencil him into anything. But of the two people, just based on their skill set, when you're talking about David Bodie and Eddie Rosario, what makes the most sense?
Starting point is 00:06:59 Yeah, when you're looking at the spring competition, here we are a couple weeks now. into spring training, things are starting to figure themselves out. It feels like a little bit more. David Bodie is standing out a bit more, in my opinion. And Eddie Rosario has been, you know, he's been solid, especially in the first few games. You know, he hit the first homer of the spring for this team, which I'm sure everybody had on their Dodgers spring training bingo card. There's kind of, it feels to me at this point, and this isn't breaking news or anything,
Starting point is 00:07:29 but there's one roster spot available for this team right now. and it was kind of maybe initially going to go to somebody like a Hessong Kim. But Kim, the Dodgers have sort of soft-launched the idea that, you know, he could start the season at AAA, which is not a bad thing. It's not a slight on him. It's something he's even expressed that he is open to. I would rather see him, you know, become a big leaguer and be here, stay here, as opposed to show up, struggle sort of thing. That's what I would rather see. But to have, if he does go to AAA to.
Starting point is 00:08:02 open the season. You have Versaari, you have Bodhi as non-rosster invitees fighting for that final spot. And to me, it comes down to versatility. Dodgers love versatility. And as you said, Bodie can play some second, can play some third base, play a little first as were Eddie Rosario was kind of limited to just left field. And that's a spot where Tommy Edmund, Chris Taylor, Kike Hernandez, they could all fit in. They could all help out there. And I think that's the way they, I, if I'm reading some tea leaves right now, I would not be shocked to see David Bodie end up with that final spot. Like you said,
Starting point is 00:08:38 you know, he's worked with the hitting coaches. He's worked on getting better, uh, as a Dodger. And, you know, to put a prediction to cap off my roster basion conversation here.
Starting point is 00:08:49 Oh my. Again, I would put good money on Bodee being on that, the final roster guy, the final position player side. I'd put a whole $5 on that that David Bode. ends up getting that final spot on the team. Wow, your word choice is quite spectacular.
Starting point is 00:09:05 Let me tell you this, though. I wonder very heavily. I guess I shouldn't wonder because I'm the last person that should be questioning the moves that the Dodgers make. And again, it's still a puzzle piece. Like you're trying to get better than you were last year and you won a World Series. So, but why sign Haissan Kim, a guy that some think is projected to win gold glove at second base?
Starting point is 00:09:26 Why consider moving him all around? and number two, why sign him if his bat isn't where you want him to be? Listen, to me, it's a lottery ticket. That's what the Dodgers want to do. We know the glove can play. The bat was going to take a little bit of work. I think I haven't seen a whole lot. I'm no big city hitting coach or anything like that.
Starting point is 00:09:46 I haven't seen a whole lot that's great hitting wise out of Kim. He's coming along a little bit more in recent days. But there's a difference between buying a $1 scratch off lot. ticket or a $20 scratch-off lottery ticket. Maybe he's somewhere in that $15, $20 range of a scratch-off. And if you win, you get that $250,000 on the scratch-off. If you feel pretty good. If not, it's like, oh, whatever, it was $20.
Starting point is 00:10:09 So the Dodgers have that kind of luxury where they can spend a little bit of money and give themselves some extra talent. We already know this team is deep every way in every way, shape, and form when it comes to pitching and hitting. So why not just give yourself more opportunity to be good? Listen, if the bat can catch up to the glove, that can be a really special player, whether he does start the season at the big league level or whether he starts in AAA.
Starting point is 00:10:33 All right. Back in a moment with Amelia May, Dustin's May, lovely bride, after a quick word from Eric Crats and Scott Braun on Arena Club. All right, FTFam, collectors, there is a new, better way to buy, sell, trade, or display your sports cards. It's called Arena Club and Crats. I know you love it. The FFAMs got to go to arena club.com.

Starting point is 00:12:19 Everybody, Clint and I are so happy to welcome in Amelia May, our friend of the program, Dustin May's wife, of course. Amelia, great to see you. It's been a long time since. I've seen that face in person, but it's so awesome to see you. And I want to ask you, just from a perspective of a big leaguers wife, when you saw Dustin have that first strikeout back in Cactus League play, after all that he's been through off of the field,
Starting point is 00:12:45 what goes through your mind? A huge sigh of relief for sure and just pure pride, because I've been with him every step of the day of the way, you know, watching him struggle through setbacks. through injuries and it was just so amazing, I think, for both of us and emotional to just have that side of relief, like, okay, it's done the first time's over with and he did it. I knew we could, but it was just nice to see it happen. Yeah, I bet.
Starting point is 00:13:13 I mean, it's obviously we've all been following this journey and to have the rug kind of pulled out from under you guys. I don't know how anybody could have dealt with it and the devastation. I mean, to have, I love Dustin talking about it, you guys have the celebration of we're ready. We're about to start going out on a rehab assignment, throwing to hitters, and you're celebrating. And then the unthinkable, you literally cannot imagine what happened. As much as you can inform our audience here about, to hear it from you, what was that evening like? And how did you do your best to kind of keep, you know, Dustin calm and keep yourself calm?
Starting point is 00:13:56 Yeah, so keeping Dustin calm is usually not very hard. He's a pretty calm person. But that evening was, it was very shocking and for lack of a better word, it was pretty traumatic. We went from eating dinner with our friends to all of a sudden Dustin's being put in ambulance. And I think, you know, the best way that I could have handled the situation, I had to think logically step by step. So as Dustin's getting in the ambulance, I'm like, okay, well, we don't have any family. family here and we're going to need a car at the hospital when this is said and done. So instead of getting in the ambulance, I'm like, okay, I have to drive the car, you know,
Starting point is 00:14:33 behind the ambulance for 30 minutes. And then we have a dog at home. So I had to quickly call one of our friends like, hey, can you go stay the night with our dog? So just taking it basically minute by minute, step by step and being very logical about it without allowing the emotion to creep in quite yet was what got us through, you know, the thick of it when it was all happening. then really, I think the emotions, we were able to kind of process things, probably maybe
Starting point is 00:15:01 day five or six when he was in the hospital. So just a good step by step going through it until we knew, okay, he's safe, the surgery is over is what got us through that night for sure. What do you think actually happen? I'm not asking you to be a doctor by any stretch of the imagination, but from the outside, we just hear like, oh, my goodness, he had an esophagus issue. and then we later find out he was eating salad. I'm sure there's a lot more to it, Amelia, than what we know.
Starting point is 00:15:29 What exactly happened? Yeah, so Dustin, I think he was having some inflammation in his esophagus. And so I think regardless, which we didn't know about, of course, because he couldn't feel it. He didn't feel like anything was wrong. I think regardless of what he had swallowed at dinner, that would have happened. So I don't think it was necessarily the lettuce itself. think if he would have swallowed, you know, a piece of steak or whatever else we were eating that night, that next swallow was going to hurt him regardless. So I don't think it was the salad.
Starting point is 00:16:03 I think it was his esophagus being inflamed. And since then, you know, we've got everything under control now and that will not be happening again. Thank God. Yeah, thank God. And then we get now the vision of this. We get to see the man back on the bump. He tells us, I'm alive. He's throwing a baseball. We get that final strike out, the emotion of that moment. What was that moment like for you to see this final K, him come off the mound? And I mean, it was palpable for us even watching on TV. Like this is a man that just fought back a lot of demons and now is ready to resume his career. What was going through your mind as the wife of that man?
Starting point is 00:16:46 It was pure joy and pure great. My mom was sitting a few seats away from me. We ran over, hugged each other immediately. We had friends with us. Everyone was screaming. Tears were running down everyone's face because all of our close friends had seen Destin go through all of the trials that he's gone through. And it was a huge moment for everyone. We even actually had Dustin's doctor, Dr. Wong.
Starting point is 00:17:12 She was the doctor who performed the surgery on his esophagus and she was at the game as well. So it was very special for all of us and pure joy. joy and and we were just so thankful that we made it through the thick event and we were finally there. Amelia, I too am married to a major league baseball player, former major league player. And one thing I know about these guys is they live and breathe with every single pitch, every single at bat. This is a game obviously that will humble you, kick you right in your teeth. And, you know, when you fail, it's displayed for the world to see. How did you keep, how do you keep things level? because I know that for a lot of players, you know, it is what they do, but it's also who they are.
Starting point is 00:17:53 And there's a lot of massive ups and massive downs. How do you guys keep things in perspective? I think it really comes down to staying grounded and keeping yourself humble and understanding that it's okay if you read something on the internet that, you know, is mean or doesn't agree, you know, with something you've done. or even when Dustin first had the esophagus injury, there were so many jokes being made right away. I think you honestly just have to separate yourself from what happens in real life and what happens on social media and understand and kind of give grace to people that, you know,
Starting point is 00:18:34 they're not in your situation, so they're not understanding it. And once you separate yourself from what happens online or even separating yourself from your job, for example, it kind of makes you look inward and you're like, okay, you know, this is me. I know what I can do. I know who I am. And it keeps you kind of on the straight and narrow. And it also helps to surround yourself with really good people who align and have the same values as well.
Starting point is 00:18:58 Yeah. And we saw also the shot here you had mentioned, you know, before the family being out there. It almost felt like he's making his big league debut again there on the mound at Camelback. Because it almost felt that way. I mean, the better part of four years, unfortunately have been derailed for for dustin in his career but thankfully i mean you guys are still young he's still young he still got a lot of career ahead of them hopefully big things coming for the dodgers uh one of the questions we were kind of wondering is you i know everybody has a different
Starting point is 00:19:27 level of what you can do as a wife to to help him get ready uh for a season and all that we saw him post on his social media last night hey is that amelia may's arm helping dustin get back on the bump and what are other things you do to help him kind of get ready for a season? Yeah, so I think that the main thing for us, for me, is I'm taking care of all the stuff that's happening in our household. And, you know, there are a lot of times when you are a major league baseball player or an athlete of any, you know, type of sport that you have to put that front and center before maybe something that's fun or something that you want to do. the end of the day, that's what we have to focus on. And I've been with Dustin, we've been together
Starting point is 00:20:15 since we were 19 and he was in low A for the Great Lakes Lumps. So I'm very familiar with when we need to put baseball first. And, you know, just making sure that he's eating all the things that are, you know, good for his body and not going to cause inflammation again and making sure that travel arrangements are set. And Dustin's really good at taking care of that stuff too. but it's nice for me to be able to take care of him in that way and just make things easier so that he can just focus on being on the mound and staying healthy. Are you jealous of how great his hair looks all of the time and the body that he has in his hair? And why does this man not have a shampoo and conditioner sponsorship?
Starting point is 00:20:56 Yeah, absolutely. Dustin's got amazing hair. I absolutely love the color of it. And I tell him all the time, wow, I wish my hair was as thick as yours. How have you seen him grow as a player and as a pitcher, Amelia, and more importantly, just the maturity of him as a person? I mean, you've been together a long time. And this is a, this is a industry and a career path. It's not easy.
Starting point is 00:21:20 How have you seen him mature in all aspects of it? It's been incredible to witness how Dustin has grown since I met him when we were 19, especially through the setbacks and the trials that he has faced. I know that he has a whole new appreciation for the game and for life in general, which I know he was always appreciative before, but he has this type of appreciation where I think a person can only have if you've ever been in a position where almost everything could be taken away from you. And I think that right now he is, he knows himself more than he ever has. He knows exactly who he wants to be.
Starting point is 00:22:03 And he's really just grown into the person that he's always been destined to be. And it's just been a really eye-opening and awesome experience to see him learn how to handle these setbacks with a positive attitude. And then, you know, we're finally through it and we get to reap the rewards. No matter what kind of car you drive, two things are always true. Starting point is 00:23:56 The case of the missing Reese's. It was me at the store with my mouth. Motive? Um, they're Reese's. What was I going to do? Stop myself. Tune in next time to see if I do it again. Spoiler, I will.
Starting point is 00:24:13 Wow. That had everything. Rees. Suspense. Reises. You mentioned appreciation, you know, as tough as things have been over the last couple of years, I imagine you have a sort of appreciation with, I'm calling it kind of a sisterhood of the wags, which I know sometimes people like the term.
Starting point is 00:24:39 Other people might not. But you guys obviously hanging out around Camelback and Launch a lot. There's been a lot of injuries to pitchers on this team. Is there any sort of like that bond that grows with other? other players, other wives you guys hanging out and kind of hoping everybody can get right, get healthy and get back to helping this team go out and try to win a championship. Absolutely. We have a great group of girls. When Destim was in the hospital, they sent us a floral arrangement.
Starting point is 00:25:09 They're checking in with us and asking if we need anything. Same with the Dodgers as well. And it's just been nice when you can meet other women who are going through the same things as you because it's hard to explain, even to my best friend, because it's hard if you're not actually experiencing yourself. So it's been great to have those girls. And some of those girls, you know, their husbands were in the minor leagues with dust. And like Kara Smith, I think I've known her since I was 19 as well. So it's just been awesome to kind of grow up together and, you know, be there for each other when we're going through tough times and be there for each other
Starting point is 00:25:44 when we're going through really exciting times too. All right. I know the maize are from Texas. you're not allowed to say any place in Texas and you're not allowed to say Chicago because it seems like everybody says Chicago. What is your favorite road city to visit and hang out in? Oh, that is a great question. I guess I would have to say, oh my gosh, you guys, maybe the Houston Astros. You can't say Texas. No, Texas.
Starting point is 00:26:15 I was going to say Texas. Rangers and then I'm Houston Astros. I'm teasing. I don't mean to put you on the spot. You can say Texas. It's fine. I really, okay. Thank you. Texas Rangers. People usually say Pittsburgh as well because PNC is a beautiful ballpark. PNC is pretty. I don't think I've done there. So there's, oh, you'll have to go. You have to go. Obviously, we'll play him once.
Starting point is 00:26:43 Should they stay at the haunted hotel out there though? No, but the haunted hotels in Milwaukee. That's in Milwaukee. That's the fister in Milwaukee. But you'll stay at the Fairmont in Pittsburgh. And Pittsburgh is a sneaky, sneaky, good city. Amelia, we're so happy that Dustin's doing better. And I know that you're a big part of the reason why he's back on that hill.
Starting point is 00:27:01 We hope he shoves this year. Thank you so much for taking the time to just give us a little bit of insight of what it's like. You know, supporting him and being in your world. We appreciate it. Best of luck. And we'll talk to you soon, my friend. Thank you. All right.
Starting point is 00:27:15 you may we appreciate it let's get to laselics clint let's do it all right we've introduced you to paisley before but i'm bringing her up again paisley is actually named after brad paisley who is a massive dodger fan so there's a little bit of a dodger connection there um she was at the divorce shelter about to be euthanized just because she had an infection that is not a reason to kill a dog devour but we got her out just in the nick of time she is very healthy she is about a year and a half years old. Starting point is 00:28:05 Clarita, but she's looking for her forever home. So let's give, let's give Paisley a forever home. All right. Clint, before we talk about your show, let's have a thought for the road, a baseball thought for the road. And you and I wanted to give a shout out to Mike DeGiovana, who was on our show, kind enough, DG to be on our show on Monday, talking all things Dodgers. And he's hanging him up. He's retiring. Your thoughts. My main thoughts are one. Congrats on a phenomenal career to have that job for that long. And still, we just had him on, like you said, on Monday, and he still had a sunny disposition about him. Usually writers, beat writers aren't the most happy people in the world, but he is a a happy fella and I'm sure he's very much looking forward to mostly retirement. Of course,
Starting point is 00:28:52 he's still going to be writing a little bit. But also, Mike, you could have given us the exclusive here on DT. Come on. We could have shared it out to the world. Of course, we knew beforehand. You had known he said he was going to post a nice thing on on social media, which he did. But congrats on a phenomenal career to D. Yeah. Yeah, great. One of great ones. Four decades at the LA Times. And you can tell how well he's beloved and respected by just all of the people coming out and saying niceties on social media. So congratulations. And he's not completely, completely going to retire. He's going to be a freelancer. But the thing is he got to walk away on his own terms. And everybody wishes that they could do that. All right. Coming up on all Dodgers with
Starting point is 00:29:29 Clint Paseas, my co-host, what's coming up on your show? More Dodgers talk. Isn't that crazy how that works out? We'll be talking more about this whole Hess-Hisson Kim second base conversation, because I think there's a lot more to dig in there. Of course, we'll be able to talk about another game that happened today. Roki Sasaki, the latest there. And just kind of how things are lining up roster-wise with about, what is it, two and a half weeks-ish until opening day in Tokyo. So guys, too, been 6 p.m. Pacific time. All Dodgers with Clint will see us. Please do subscribe. We're trying to get to 15,000 subscribers there. And we're about 2,000 away or something like that. But appreciate it. Oh, you're doing good. You're doing good as we try to get to 10,000 here.
