Make sure you are paying attention to everything she is writing for the athletic. Her and Fabi and Ardaya do a great job covering this team for you guys. I appreciate you very much. All right, a lot to get to as we're trying to get the first round by, Katie. So let's get into the big ticket.

I'm lagging. We're coming. Hold on. It's a Monday show, guys. It is a Monday show. All right, here we go. All right. So the Dodgers, they swept the Giants.

You always love to do that when it is your biggest rival, at least historically, it is their biggest rival. So now the magic number for the first round by is down to three. And Katie, this is something that you have talked about at length. course, how important it would be to get that first round by. So what did you see from the Giants series that allowed you to think that they could finish off the regular season strong and get that first round by? Well, I saw a lot of sadness from San Francisco. And sorry, viewers, for the technical difficulties in the beginning of the show and also I'm going to sound for the next

30 minutes or so. We're on the mend. And as a lot of says, it's going to be great, but maybe just not today for me. I think, you know, it's the 4A Giants came to town. The DHS, the Dodgers did what they needed to do. What's important going forward, of course, is locking down the by. That magic number is down to three with Atlanta clinching the NL East yesterday. And the next six games, Alana, are essentially competition for bullpen roles and runway for guys like, we'll talk about them, Andy Paez, Shoea Otani, Roki Sasaki, Returning. We saw Edwin Diaz. We'll talk about him later in the show. But it's very clear over the last week of the season. Lock down the by for the Dodgers. They don't really care if they're the first seat or the

the number two seed, and make sure that game 162, you feel like you have the best possible chance if you're Andrew Freeman and Dave Roberts to look at who can be our 26 guys in that NLTS. You know, and you're looking at two teams, obviously, that are incredibly hot when you're talking about the Padres and the Giants. They're on deck, of course,

for the best of three starting tomorrow, no game today, but essentially a battle of the hottest teams in baseball right now. So since September 3rd, San Diego is 14 and 2. that's the best record in terms of that time. And LA is 14 and 3. So the second best record in that spans since September 3rd. And Katie, both teams are playing for something. You and I have already discussed that the Dodgers are obviously playing for that first round by.

But San Francisco, winners of five straight, or excuse me, San Diego, winners of five straight, they're still trying to hold on to that wild card spot. Right now they have a one game lead over Philadelphia. And the Arizona Diamondbacks are four games back fighting for that final wildcard spot if you want to say it that way. But San Diego still has something to prove, like trying to make sure that they stay within that wild card pitcher. Yeah, I mean, this is, both teams are playing for something. Dodgers are playing for the by. The Padres are playing for a wildcard spot and what is a jam-packed national league. You just talked about it. I mean, the Phillies, the Cubs, and the Padres

are essentially all separated by half a game. I have four hotels booked for the NLDS. I don't know what city we're going to. We're just going to. We're just going to roll the dice. So the, the, the The Padres have played out of their mind over the start of September. And I think this is going to be a really competitive series. There's obviously a lot of emotion anytime the Dodgers and Padres play. I'm old school. I believe the rivalry is at Los Angeles, San Francisco. But right now, if we're basing on what these games matter and mean the most, it's Padres

Dodgers all the way. So this is going to be a competitive series at Dodgers Stadium. Padres, again, playing for not just an end but trying to capitalize. You know, they could be the six seed. They could be the four seed. That all matters. in the postseason picture. But the Dodgers, again, focusing on a lot of guys coming back, getting healthy.

Alana, Andy Paez should be in center field on Tuesday and Per Dave Roberts. Yeah, and that's the one thing I wanted to talk about next. That is a good segue, Katie Wu. Andy Paix has to return on Thursday. He's going to get the bulk of the center field starts, but Dave Roberts will work in rest days. Obviously, you want him to get back into the groove of things, certainly offensively with the rhythm and the timing, seeing the baseball well, but it will be good to have him back in the fold, obviously, on the leaderboard there in terms of home runs. And he's missed quite a bit of time. He has 21 home runs and he's missed a significant amount of time. One of the league leaders, one of the team leaders in RBI. So it'll be good to get him back in the mix. How much rest do you think Dave will work in? What do you think the workload for Pahas will be like? Yeah, it's going to mean, this is something I talked to Dave about over the weekend where you want Andy Pahas to as many as bats as possible. You think about the injuries. You think about the injuries. he's coming back from the fracture

and his dominant hand on the swing. Obviously, it's important to get as many reps as possible, but you don't want to tax him, you don't want him to burn out and overplay him. So I think we're going to see kind of a modified workload for Andy Paas. I expect him to be in Centerfield Tuesday. You know, maybe he plays two

games in each of the remaining three games series and hopefully that's enough at bats. The Dodgers should they take care of business like they want to? We'll have the next five days after next Sunday, excuse me, to take as many SIM games, do their workouts and her squad games as possible. So there are more chances for Andy to get reps. But it's a tight rope for Dave Roberts and Andy Paez to balance here. Can he get enough at bats while also not

overworking him with just six games to go? There's really not a lot of leeway here. Yeah, no kidding. It's going to be fun. The last six games, it's going to be electric. Obviously, everyone waiting for the postseason, but I think it's going to be a good atmosphere, certainly, at Dodger Stadium. Okay, Roki Sasaki, seems like we're always talking about Ropee Sasaki for good reason. He's also going to be active Tuesday as well, available out of the bullpen, Katie, in an audition for his postseason role. We saw him in both roles last year, right? We saw him as a starter who struggled a little bit and then certainly was dominant out of the postseason this year, much better as a starter. But the way that the rotation is probably going to line up

with the addition of Terrick Scouble, so on and so forth, postseason bullpen, a very likely possibility. How do you see that working itself out? Yeah, this was kind of the natural position that we thought Roki Sasaki would be in come October. And the blister may be impacted a little bit of the rollout plan. But again, with one week to go, it's time for these guys to step up, especially with Edwin Diaz still competing for a spot. You've had Tanner Scott look probably the most dependable from all of the relievers this year. But I think the Dodgers in a perfect world would want Edwin Diaz in the bullpen. They're still going to give Rokie Sasaki a chance. And we asked Dave Roberts what that was going to look like over the next week in his reliever role.

He's going to be available. Rokey is on Tuesday, but not as a bulk guy, maybe multiples, but it's not going to be like we've seen Emmett Sheehan or Justin Robleski at times. It's probably going to be, you know, one to two, possibly three. But I really think we're looking at a two inning stint for Roki. Going to give him a clean inning to start if he can. And he's not going to be in the ninth to start. Dave Roberts and Mark Pryor are going to work Roki into a potential close situation.

But right now, this is more about the adjustment. These are dress rehearsals, if you will, to what October is going to look like. We know what Roki looks like coming out of the bullpen. We've seen it before. But he spent all year being a starter for the Dodgers on a six-man starter schedule. He's just spent the last three weeks on the IL. So it's more about acclamation and seeing what kind of the results are than necessarily pitching him in any role. If they have a chance to work him back in there, they'll do so.

But right now, Alana, it's all about can these guys get enough? experience under their feet in such a short runway. None of that applies more than Shoah Otani, who Dave Roberts said could be back during the Padre series. He's eligible to be back as early as Wednesday the 23rd. that was my next thing to talk about. Hopefully he's followed up, you know, he's following Pahas and Sasaki in terms of the activation if he comes back on Wednesday. But what's interesting is neither, none of the three, as you know, Katie played in any rehab game. So that further is your point about the fact that they're going to have to have, they're going to have limited at bats to get back up to speak for the postseason.

That's going to be a key development for an offense that has found a groove as of late. So you think about the fact that Sasaki has been able to face hitters, but neither Pahas nor Otani will face live pitching before returning. So that's going to make these last six games all the more important to be able to get back into the groove of things. But that's going to be good to get all three of those guys back. Obviously, Otani's playing time is not going to be monitored like Pahas. Otani is going to get as many at-bats as possible. All right.

And there is no way, Katie, Catherine Wu, that we could possibly get through a show without talking about Edwin Diaz. Is he back since returning off of the IL, two innings, one hit, one Wop, 4Ks, the Facebook. Kath Paul is up to 99, much better command, much better location. should we be really, really excited about that, or should we be a little bit hesitant in our excitement? Yeah, so I was a little rough on Edwin Diaz, and I will say the first two outings that we've seen upon his IL, it's looked much better, topping out at 99 with that fastball,

the location, both with the fastball and the slider, much better. He's really hitting his spots. He's sprayed a little bit throughout, but given where we were before, we will take that. I know they're not safe situations. In fact, on Saturday, he came in the 8th. He's not the outings or the rules that Edwin Tias was brought into when the Dodgers signed him.

That doesn't matter right now. What matters is can he get right? And I talked to Edwin and he went through a bunch of different mechanical changes down in AAA with the pitching coach there, with some guidance from the Dodgers pitching coaches as well. Edwin said, look, we got six games to go. So when they give me the ball, I'm going to do my best and try to be on that roster. He knows that the runway is short. He knows that he lost his job and it's on him to get it back. Talking to Edwin, though, he's kind of naturally smiling and optimistic.

And I don't think he ever really lost his confidence. More, he was just not understanding what was going wrong. And to be fair, neither were we. But he said the mechanical changes, we talked about the arm slot. They identified that. He came back from the neck inflammation during his rehab start and was so focused on the upper body, hitting his shoulders right, getting the arm angle up, that he essentially fell out of sync with his lower half. Pitching is so hard. Everything has to be firing on all cylinders at the same time. And the second something is a fraction off, there goes your strike zone. So after that wild Sunday outing that we talked about where he allowed fiber and runs didn't go out of the inning, it looked really bad. He met with the AAA staff. They went through all this film and they said, hey, your hips are out of sink. So they realigned him. He threw a bullpen Tuesday with OKC. Everything. look better. The hips were more focused towards home plate.

Upper body, lower body, in sync. He said he felt really good. He pitched one more outing for OKC on Wednesday. Didn't generate a swing and miss. That was something that he said, you know, prior times that would have stood out to me, but I was more focused on where my body was and the ball was coming out well. I could manipulate it where I wanted to, so I felt good coming back. First two outings, really encouraging. Now, I'm not going to say, go out there and throw them in a safe situation for game one of the NLDS. But I think Dave Roberts is going to over the next week in a perfect world, get him three or four more appearances to get him the best

shot at making the conversation difficult for the Dodgers. A lot of Edwin Diaz can come back and show prior semblance to his old self. Do you feel comfortable putting him back in the night? I certainly do. I do. I really think the fact that they fixed out the mechanical issue, you explained it very clearly in terms of fixing his hips and shifting the hips back towards home plate. It seems like something clicked for him. And from what I have seen in the two hours, outing since coming off the IL. He looks more like the Edwin Diaz of old than he did, obviously, in his rehab starts and, you know, what we saw coming into the fact when he was put on the aisle. So I would be more comfortable putting him in those situations. However, I would like to see the

next three or four outings in high level. I mean, at this point, yes, the buy is still incredibly important, but I'd rather have his confidence get built up prior to going into the postseason. So while Dave says he doesn't need to see him in safe situations, you know, the next three or four outings will be important, I think, to make sure that he can handle that spot. So whether it's, you know, with guys on the bases in the eighth inning or just some sort of high leverage spot, doesn't necessarily need to be the ninth.

But, you know, it's going to be difficult to get a closer's job back with such a short runway. We only have six more games. But I do feel comfortable with what I have seen as of late. All right. So from Edwin Diaz to Emmett Sheehan. Let's shout him out for a second here. five and a third scoreless innings, one walk, one hit, nine Ks in a bulk roll on Sunday.

So Katie, you know the numbers. In September, a 0.53 earned run average, one earned run, six hit, 17 innings, 24Ks, three walks, an opponent average against of just 105. In your estimation, has he firmly pitched his way back onto the postseason roster? I definitely think he is worthy of consideration. And I think a lot of the next six games is going to figure out, the Dodgers figuring out who, what, where. And Emmett Sheehan, since going down and having that reset and AAA in August, has come back. And we've talked about it before on the show, just looks like a pitcher again.

We spend so much of the first half with Emmett talking about, where's your Vela at? Why can't you sustain it? Why are your mechanics? And sometimes when you're a young pitcher, still trying to figure things out, pitching for a spot on this rotation that is just stacked with talent, it can create kind of a vortex, if you will. I think it was the best thing for Emmett, maybe not at the time frame personally. But you go down to AAA and just reset. And he comes back and he said it, I just feel like I'm pitching again. And when Emmett Sheen is pitching again, the stuff plays.

You see the numbers. I mean, opposing hitters, Sensi's come back with just two for 20, hitting his fastball. One for 22 off the slider. That's going to play in a relief role if you're only going to really use two pitches and you can have the stuff play up. The BELO plays up because you're not going for, you know, five, six innings at a time. Why not throw them in and have another option there? There are a lot of question marks again.

We talked about it with Roki, with Edwin. Chris Bubich has looked good in a limited sample size. But for Emmett Sheehan, this is important. And he's going to go back to AAA. OKC is playing for the AAA Championship. So should they still be in it Saturday? Shee is going to take the ball as a starter per Dave Roberts. But he's still looked at as a relief role come October for the Dodgers.

And I think that makes a lot of sense if you're looking for a guy where every inning is important. Every inning is high leverage in the postseason. If you need a guy where you don't really project any of your starters having a short start, you know, but never say never, if you need a break glass in case of emergency, I am right now feel really confident with Emmett Sheehan taking a couple of innings. All right. So it's not just Edwin Diaz and Emmett Sheehan that are fighting for a postseason spot. There's a couple of other guys, too, in terms of roster spots up for grabs.

Let's talk about top prospect, Posovo de Paola, number six overall per MLB pipeline. And he's already made himself, Katie, a clear candidate to be the primary left-handed bat off the bench after playing just 10 big league games. Can he make it an easier decision? I know this sounds a little silly, but can he make it an easier decision for Dave Roberts and the Goddress coaching staff if he plays really well the final six games? Is he on your postseason roster? If there were no logistics involved, absolutely. And I try really hard not to jump the gun or get too excited. But for Jose de Palo, I just, I love watching him play.

He's so fun. the confidence. We don't have to see him in the field right now, so that is also an added bonus. But the Dodgers have talked about having a left-handed bat off the bench, and we throughout the second half have presumed that that would be Dalton rushing. I'm not sure, just based on Dalton's

health status, if that's going to be in play. But the only way that Hesway de Pauli can make the postseason roster is if he's replacing someone that is currently on the aisle that's already served more than the 10 days. So that would be right now, Paez, Otani, or Dalton. We know Andy Paas' his feedback. We know Showy Otani

is coming back. So the only way that Oswe de Paula can come up on the postseason roster and be eligible is if he's replacing Dalton and even then the Dodgers have to make a petition to the commissioner's office. So there's still a lot to be kind of seen in how that's going to roll out. We don't know if Dalton is going to be an option yet, though he's trending in the right direction. It just kind of depends on rushing's health, but

Josue de Paula is really making this a difficult decision just based on how good he's looked. it's just breaking it down but by the plate appearances. His command and control the strike zone is some of the best we've seen and it's even more impressive when we think about the fact that he's had what, two weeks of baseball under his belt.

So I like him on the postseason roster. It remains to be seen if the Dodgers can actually do that. It depends on Dalton rushing's health. But at least we know, Alana, that the Dodgers will have a valuable option, whether it's Dalton rushing or Osway de Paula from the left side off the bench. Yeah.

Phenomenal information. It's not just the eye test sometimes or C ball, hipball. There's a lot of logistical stuff that also goes behind these decisions that the Dodgers front office has to make great stuff there, Katie. Guys, we appreciate you, as always letting me talk about this. This is George, and George is a little Frenchie that was found as a stray in Alcaloma slash Rancho Cucamonga. He is such a good boy. We're just waiting for his 30-day stray hold to be up. Legally, we have to keep him for 30 days and make sure that no owner can be found. We have certainly done our due diligence trying to find an owner. He was not microchiped, no caller, no tag.

We've put up all of the appropriate signage, and we don't think he has an owner. We think he was dumped because he was used for breeding. But he's very healthy. We're going to get him neutered at our cost. He's great with other dogs. He passed his overall healthness and wellness check. We believe he's about five years old. And he is going to be ready for adoption after he heals from his neuters.

So probably around Game 7 of the World Series, but the Dodgers won't need Game 7. So he can go home for you. He could be like your Halloween buddy. So baseball thought for the road, Katie Wu, Heson Kim lives. He's doing pretty good in AAA.

And again, that's another guy that could potentially be on the roster. But I guess he's kind of forcing his way into the conversation. Forcing, I'm not sure. I think that it depends on what the Dodgers are looking for, how many position players they take. Maybe they're looking for a role player in kind of these shorter division series. The numbers in AAA, not what you want, hitting 262, 330 on base percentage 345 slugging.

That's an OPS under 700. again in the hitter-friendly confines of the PCL. But Dave Roberts said that Kim could potentially be in the conversation for the postseason because he has the ability to run, play defense, steal a base, potentially is doing a lot of heavy lifting here. But I do think it's a conversation because the Dodgers have a starting lineup and their bench players are bench players and not a lot of them have the steal a bag specialty, right? Maybe Alex Freeland.

But if you are looking for a guy that you need to go, 90 feet matters in every element of this game, just steal a quick base. That's the role that I see Kim playing. It's worth having the conversation, I think, in the postseason, a lot of it's your stars, a lot of it's your pitching. But having a depth player works. Dave Roberts certainly knows the value of stealing a base in the postseason. So if Kim is here, it's not to hit. I really actually doubt that we'd see him in the field at all. it would be essentially to pinch run.

That's worth having a conversation, but I still think, at least in my opinion, that this is a low probability of happening. All right, so not forcing the conversation, but potentially being in the conversation for Hessan Kim. Again, in 85 games of AAA, 262, 330, 345. Not great, but that is his slash line, but he can.

He steals a bag here and there, and he can run pretty well played defense. We'll say, but you mentioned he's probably not going to be in the field. All right, a couple of super chats, Katie.
