Starting point is 00:01:50 They're just opening up new markets and, like, just sort of building their brand as a whole, regardless of like whether it means they're going to get future players or not. Good afternoon, everybody. And welcome to the last. Live a new edition of Dodgers territory. We are your host for the next 30 minutes. That is Clint Paseas.
Starting point is 00:02:12 I am Alana Rizzo. Great to be with you guys as always. What's the matter, Clint? Sorry, I apparently had some like gnarly feedback on my side. That's on me. That's on me. Listen. Wow.
Starting point is 00:02:25 I'm excited. Technical difficulties from the Pesias household. Are you just like so psyched about the whole Roki Sasaki news that you didn't put the show together appropriately? Is that what you're telling us? No, the problem is I change things and I try to put the comments down here on a different monitor and then it decided YouTube decided to do its job and play music but even so guys if you want things to not mess up hit that subscribe button we're
Starting point is 00:02:47 trying to get to a billion subscribers good show lined up today though we got our friend eric steven joining us troubl o'a should be fun yeah read us five stars we appreciate you guys very much we love that you're here eric steven coming up soon and by the way next week i don't want to jinx it but next week we have a good uh list of guests for you because on Monday we are supposed to have scheduled to appear the one and only to Oscar Hernandez. And on Thursday, scheduled to appear the one and only Chris Taylor, CT3 joining us on Thursday. Taye will be on Dodgers territory on Monday. But before we get to that, let's get to the big ticket.
Starting point is 00:03:25 All right. So we just found out breaking news here, everybody, on Dodgers territory. We just found out that Tyler Glasnow over on foul territory with the guys. that he talked to Roki Sasaki. Totally coincidental. They share the same agent. So he called in to check with his agent on a couple of things. And Roki happened to be, I think his agent is Joel Wolf, right?
Starting point is 00:03:52 So Roki happened to be with Joel. And Tyler Glasnow, Clint, made a push for Roki to come to Los Angeles. He said, hey, if you want to be around a group of people that are going to help develop you, L.A. is the place to be. And we know that he's probably down to three teams, right? L.A., the Padres and the Blue Jays. Thank you, Tyler Glassnow. Hey, hey, Tyler Glasnow doing something special.
Starting point is 00:04:18 He wasn't around to help the Dodgers during that World Series run, but if he can help get the next star arm in the starting rotation, or at least in the organization, that's pretty cool to find out. So guys do check out that most recent edition of foul territory. But yeah, it makes a lot of sense. If you got a shared agent, you have an opportunity to talk to. the player, tell them there are few organizations better at player development. This is something we've talked a lot about here online, especially on my channel. It's like you're looking at
Starting point is 00:04:48 Toronto, you're looking at the Padres and you're looking at the Dodgers, look at how good the Dodgers are at developing players, taking care of their players. That has to mean something to somebody like Rokisasaki who says he wants to be the best. He wants to be recognized as the best. And honestly, the decision is going to come soon, right? Because he has, from the 15th, I believe, until the 23rd to make the decision. He has eliminated teams along the way. We do believe that there's the three big left. However, it doesn't necessarily mean it's an equal chance for either team.
Starting point is 00:05:20 We're not saying it's 33.3% for the Blue Jays, for the Dodgers, and then for the Padres. I had a conversation with Ken Rosenthal on Fair Territory today that it's not necessarily about the money either because it's the international signing pool. and there's no difference between really five and a half million or six million. And honestly, if Roki Sasaki cared about the money, he would have waited two years to post and then really get some cash. So he wants to play in the bigs now and he wants to play for a team that's a contender and a team that's going to help him develop at this level. So that is awesome to hear.
Starting point is 00:05:53 Hopefully we find out soon because I'm sick of the waiting of where is this man going to go. But we do have our guest who is already checking in. So why don't you go ahead and bring them in, Clint? Yeah, this is a guy who probably has written a whole lot about is paying attention to everything that's going on on the Roki Sasaki front. This is our friend Eric Steven, of course, he is Dodgers Beat Rider over at True Blue L.A. Does some great work and one of the punniest people you're going to find on the Twitter X machine. What's going on, Eric?
Starting point is 00:06:21 Thanks for joining. Yeah, thanks for having me. Like you guys, I'm also like waiting on Sasaki. So I jumped in early because I just couldn't wait. Oh, good. We're happy to have you, Eric. Always good to be with you. Let me ask you this.
Starting point is 00:06:35 I mean, do you think the likelihood, we keep hearing, of course, that the Dodgers are the team where he's probably going to go, but everybody says that about everybody, because, you know, why not? Logistically and legitimately, do you think that you'll be covering him in L.A.? Yes.
Starting point is 00:06:52 I think it's more likely that he joins the Dodgers than the others. I'm not discounting like the Padres, or I guess even the Blue Jays, they're technically, you know, finalist it feels you know almost cruel to make them go through this two years in a row with like a japanese superstar but i i don't know like i think it's it's most likely he's going to end up with the dodgers but i can't say i have a feel for it i don't think it's like a lock there's there's been a lot of like um uh you know oh it's a done deal it's it's clearly going to be the dodger i don't know
Starting point is 00:07:24 if i buy that but i think it's it's definitely more likely than not yeah i mean we're we're seeing a lot of the rumors and the news and the things popping out that somebody was saying, all of it's very, you take it with a grain of salt at this point, but we're seeing maybe today's the day that he announces it. Well, a lot of us assume he's made his decision. It's just about whether or not the Dodgers can go out. We know they're trying to acquire more international money. I guess this is a long way around.
Starting point is 00:07:53 Do you think it happens today? Does the gut tell you it happens today? Or is it something where maybe Friday into next week, or how soon before this wraps? Yeah, that's a good question. So we have a full week, like the 23rd is the day he has to sign by. I would imagine they get it done sometime before then. I was half joking with someone.
Starting point is 00:08:13 I said, I'm about to do an interview, and then I have to go somewhere. So he's probably going to sign within this two-hour period where I'm away from my computer. But that's always how it happens. So, no, like I would imagine, like probably by this weekend. think logistically, but maybe he is weighing the, you know, the pros and cons. He just met in person, like in the last week with all three teams. I'm sure, you know, obviously it's a huge
Starting point is 00:08:41 decision for him. He may, you know, if he hasn't already made his decision, maybe he has a lot to weigh. I don't really have a feel for it. But I would imagine by like, you know, if the deadline is what, Thursday, we'll probably know by Monday or Tuesday at the latest. But like, I don't know about today, but it would not surprise me. What's up? I'm Miles Turner. And I'm Brianna Stewart. And our podcast, Game Recognized Game, has never been done before.
Starting point is 00:09:08 Two active players giving you a real look at our lives and what we actually think, on and off the court. Nothing's off limits. We talk trade requests. What's the vibe of that when it's like your star player is like, well, I want to leave? And then actually now I'm going to stay. We talk tanking. I mean, honestly, like, I might get in trouble for this answer, but I think he's. it's like definitely happening in the WBA.
Starting point is 00:09:32 And yeah, we talk about our mistakes too. They pulled me to the side and was like, hey, man, we got a call last night, man. You can't be rolling around the city like this tonight before games, no, you know, doing this, doing whatever. And of course, family stories. And we're like, mommy, why did you miss that? Mommy, do you play basketball? Check out Game Recognized game with Stuy and Miles
Starting point is 00:09:55 on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. I'm Anna Navarro and on my new podcast, Bleep with Anna Navarro. I'm talking to the people closest to the biggest issues happening in your community and around the world. Because I know deep down inside right now, we are all cursing and asking what the bleep is going on. I'm talking to people like Julie K. Brown, who broke the explosive story on Jeffrey Epstein in 2018. These victims have been let down time and time again for decades. decades and decades and decades by local law enforcement, by federal law enforcement, by administration after administration. The Justice Department through, I think we counted four presidential administrations, failed these victims.
Starting point is 00:10:45 Listen to Bleep with Anna Navarro as part of the My Cultura podcast network, available on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hi, it's Alec Baldwin this season on my podcast. Here's the thing I'm speaking with more artists, policymakers, and performers, like composer Mark Shaman. Once you've established that you have the talent, it's about the hang. It's the pleasure of hanging out with the people that you're with. You know, Rob and I was always a great hang. We would sit in kibbets for hours and then eventually get around to the music.
Starting point is 00:11:23 That's what I mostly think of when I think of him, the time together laughing. Lawyer of Robbie Kaplan. The great gift of being a lawyer is the ability to actually change things in our society in a way that very few people can. You can really make a difference to causes in the United States if you bring the right case at the right time. Marriage equality. Yeah, Windsor's the perfect example.
Starting point is 00:11:45 And journalist Chris Whipple. Every White House staffer, they work in a bubble called the West Wing, and it's exponentially more so in the Trump White House. Listen to the new season of Here's the Thing on the I-Heart Radio app or wherever you get your podcasts. Eric, what do you think about the fact that the Dodgers are so familiar? Such an international brand. Everybody knows who the New York Yankees are, the Los Angeles Dodgers, the Dallas Cowboys,
Starting point is 00:12:13 you know, Manchester United. When the Dodgers went out and signed Heysong Kim, a lot of it was, as you wrote about, there was a natural familiarity with the Dodgers having said, well, they're the Dodgers. I was so familiar with them having watched Chanho Park and Hyun Jun, Ryu played there. And they're the defending champions. How much do you think the brand recognition plays, not to mention the fact that, oh, by the way, Shohei Otani pitches for them and plays for them. How much do you think the brand recognition plays into this?
Starting point is 00:12:44 Yeah, I think Otani is like the huge part of that. But it's also going back decades. Like you mentioned, Heison Kim mentioned, you know, Chanho Park, Shohei Otani. And I think Yoshinovo Yamamoto both mentioned Hadeo Nomo, like, you know, years ago. and just like having that sort of name recognition, you know, for decades building on. But now what they're doing is like, like they have Otani and Yamamoto by itself is such a strong, like presence for the Dodgers in Japan. And then like if they also add Sasaki, it's like they're kind of also, you know, priming the pump for, you know, maybe 20 years from now. Some guy's going to come up and go, yeah, I watched Roki Sasaki.
Starting point is 00:13:31 and Yoshinovo Yamamoto pitched for the Dodgers and I want to do that too. So maybe that's sort of the plan there. But not only that, not just getting future players, but like we saw the Dodgers added like what, at least 11 possibly even more like Japanese sponsors last year bringing in extra revenue. Like they're just opening up new markets
Starting point is 00:13:54 and like sort of building their brand as a whole regardless of like whether it means they're going to get future players or not. Yeah, if anything, you know, the addition of Kim, the subtraction of Gavin Lux, it opens up some more competition at the second base position. What's kind of the feel right now? We haven't heard too much from the team. Dave Roberts told us last week, hey, I look, or this week, I feel real excited about Mooki at shortstop. Sounds like they're sticking with that, but all intents and purposes, it looks like 2B could be a competition. Do you think Kim will get an opportunity to maybe be on that opening day roster or it's going to be more of some of the
Starting point is 00:14:34 guys that have been there done that Chris Taylor maybe Tommy Edmund because most likely you're open up against a left-handed pitcher and Shota Imanaga and the Cubs. What do you think of the budding competition there to be? Yeah, it's such an interesting roster because once they traded Lux, it was sort of an indication to me at least that they at least viewed Kim over Lux in terms of maybe roster fit, but that might just be because Kim can play multiple positions. They have a weird roster right now. There's only 15 position players on the 40 man. And, you know, their avenues to add more are essentially like, you know, every day in our comment section at True Blue L.A., you know, people are mentioning, when is Kiki going to sign,
Starting point is 00:15:20 all this kind of stuff? And it certainly could happen. But then once Kike signs, they actually need depth, right? So the options of Kiki signs are, well, that means Andy Pahas might, you know, start the season in the minors, or, you know, they might move on from Chris Taylor, who has a year left on his deal. I don't know if I necessarily buy that right away. But, but then there's also, you know, Kim, like you said, not fully established in the majors might, you know, could start the season in the minors. I don't know how likely that is, but it's like hard to see them signing someone for, you know 12 and a half million over three years and they're like yeah can you start in the minors i mean it's certainly possible but like it just seems like it i would guess kim's going to be on the roster
Starting point is 00:16:05 but again they could also make some other move that we just don't know about but i think if anything they need to add like depth that that also that depth could come from within like dalton rushing is probably going to hit his way onto the team at some point but that's later in the year david bowie is an nri who can play like kind of all over the infield and possibly like like one of the outfield spots if they had to. But I just don't know where that other depth is going to come from. So I would imagine they're not done there yet, which kind of maybe that's the next thing we're sort of waiting on. Eric, let's switch our focus to the relief market because if you look at the Dodgers pen right now,
Starting point is 00:16:40 I feel pretty good about the arms that they have in the bullpen. But there's a lot of relievers on the market that probably are not going to get what they're expecting. There seems to be a deep pull of guys to choose from not only in the free agent market, but also on the trading block. Do you anticipate the Dodgers getting another bullpen arm? And if you had to kind of look in the crystal ball, who might that be? Yeah. So I know Tanner Scott was his name was bandied about, like especially last month. They were interested in him and Devin Williams at the Yankees press conference for Williams.
Starting point is 00:17:14 He said, I thought I was going to the Dodgers. And so they were obviously probably close on that trade. but like with with with tanner scott like i i wonder if it's just a matter of like um you know i heard some report where he wants you know somewhere near like josh hater money which was kind of a huge contract i doubt he gets that so that's probably what he's still unsigned but um i would imagine they're still interested in in him outside of that though uh you're right there the the pen as is is is pretty solid and also we we have to sort of factor in the um like let's say they do sign Sasaki.
Starting point is 00:17:54 So I would imagine he's in the rotation right away. Like he obviously could also start in the minors, unlikely though, given that he's basically major league ready. But then you start wondering like, okay, what's Dustin May's role on this team? Like he's going to be on the roster and you never want to assume like, oh, they're going to have so many starters because we've all seen how that sort of plays out. It solves itself.
Starting point is 00:18:18 But, you know, maybe Dustin May ends up in the bullpen. or, you know, obviously a lot of the rookies from last year like Ben Casperius could start, but also could be in relief if they need an extra guy. So like, I guess I don't really know, but it would not surprise me if they're, I would imagine they're still going to probably add at least one more reliever before, like, you know, everyone reports to camp. Yeah, we've heard the reliever. We've heard, you know, Dave and company would really like to add one more high leverage guy.
Starting point is 00:18:50 You've seen in years past, Dodgers linked to somebody like a Kirby, Kirby Yates, who's still out there. I really do. And so many people online, as you know, would very much love to see Dustin May in a relief role. It seems like the team is really noncommittal in what they want to do. We talked to Mark Pryor last season when D. May was kind of doing some of his, you know, bounce back or whatever, his recovery. He was getting closer to making his debut before the esophagus thing. And even then, non-committal. If you're sitting here right now, do you think opening the season D-May is in the rotation?
Starting point is 00:19:28 Or they decide to make that move and put him in the bullpen just to start the season? He hasn't proven he could stay healthy over the course of 162. Sure. And then, you know, there's also the fact that he hasn't pitched in like, you know, year and a half at this point. Just because it was such a bad setback because he was probably going to join them at some point in the second half. and just to have the, you know, tear your esophagus after dealing with the elbow injury, just like, just terrible luck on his part. Yeah, if I had to guess, I would probably say bullpen, but then there's so many question
Starting point is 00:20:02 marks in the rotation. Like obviously, Tyler Glass now, they're have reasonably high hopes for him, but he also hasn't pitched since mid-August. They, you know, they said his elbow's fine, but is it fine to the point where he's going to be, like, full go in spring training? to build up for the season. We don't know. You know, obviously Yamamoto came back from his injury and it was good in October.
Starting point is 00:20:27 So he's probably fine. Blake Snell's probably fine. But then like everyone else after that is a question mark. Tony Gonsland himself was a question mark. He didn't pitch last year. So it might just be a matter of who's healthy opening day. And then if Dustin May is one of them, he might be one of the five or six,
Starting point is 00:20:45 depending on how they sort of, you know, shake it all out. Obviously, Otani won't be ready to go right away. So there's just a lot of question marks. That'll be one of the things to watch in spring training for sure. Eric and Clayton Kirshov, of course, will be ready to start the year either. We don't anticipate him back until probably the second half of the season or whatever it is. Whenever Kerch is ready and wants to come back, he certainly will. We know that there's always an open spot for him. But what can you expect from a guy that obviously is a first ballot hall of famer, but is entering his age 39 season he'll be or excuse me 37 he'll be 37 on march 19th yeah like it's it's it's weirdly
Starting point is 00:21:23 encouraging um he obviously he was he was okay last year but then had the foot the thing his last like a couple starts and he just kind of fell off and obviously didn't pitch in September but i think it was encouraging in that he his shoulder um was fine after like basically the first major surgery of his career. So I think like there's at least potential that he could be healthy. And we've seen like he was before he got hurt in 23, he was excellent, like really good. So obviously now we're going to be two years removed from that. But I'm not like putting anything past him. But I think it's going to be one of those situations where he'll, he will find a way to sort of maximize like whatever he has out there. And it seemed like like the arm,
Starting point is 00:22:17 arm wise, he was pretty good last year. So I have like reasonably high hopes there. I will know he's going to end up when he does if he does and when he does get into a game, he'll be the first Dodger pitcher ever to pitch in 18 different seasons. I told him that last year, there's only two other position players who've done it, Zach Wheat and Bill Russell. I told Kershaw that, like, in October at some point, he's all, yeah, but I got to pitch first. So it was like, all right. So he didn't know who Zach Wheat was, by the way. I had to remind him.
Starting point is 00:22:49 Not a big time historian over there. He's too busy designing some new sketchers. I'm Anna Navarro. And on my new podcast, Bleep with Anna Navarro. Starting point is 00:24:47 on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Hi, it's Alec Baldwin this season on my podcast. Starting point is 00:25:49 Listen to the new season of Here's the thing on the IHeart Radio app or wherever you get your podcasts. We got a $5 super chat from Todd Garman. Happy to see the crossover. Eric Stephen on Dodgers territory, happy to have you here, though his worlds are colliding. So it's been fun so far. expecting a fun season for Dodgers fans. Different competition. We talked to Dave Roberts about this on Monday.
Starting point is 00:26:14 A lot of competition now in the NLS coming up. The Diamondbacks get a lot better, adding Corbyn Burns to that rotation. The Giants get better, adding Willie Adamas to the mix. And, of course, the off season's still not done. How important, coming off of that 2024 season, how important do you feel the competition and the league getting better for the Dodgers? How much does that help them, you know, in the past? pursuit of back-to-back championships.
Starting point is 00:26:40 Yeah, like I guess there's the argument of, you know, we saw, what, 22 and 23, they kind of pulled away at the end and didn't, there was a lot of distance between them and the other teams, and then there's the layoff, and then they just didn't perform well in October. This year, they were battling pretty much all the way to the end. It took them until the last week of the season to clinch the division, and they just kind of rode that through October. I think of all the teams. I like Arizona the most right now.
Starting point is 00:27:10 You know, like if Sasaki goes to the Padres, maybe they're back in, you know, in that spot. But yeah, there's going to be competition. Obviously, the Giants are going to be better. But yeah, I just, it's a tough, it's the best division, probably, like, you know, maybe. Maybe that I guess the NLE East is pretty good too. But I don't know, it's just.
Starting point is 00:27:33 It's going to be a tough, tough division. And I'm sure it's going to, like, help them in terms of, you know, just staying, staying ready and not having, like, necessarily meaningless games, like, in September or whatever. Yeah. Goes a long way. I don't, I don't doubt that. I don't doubt that it is the NL best.
Starting point is 00:27:52 And actually, that's what Dave Roberts and Clint were talking about on Monday. That it's a formidable division, which is good to have. You want to have those tough games all the way throughout. So, you know, there's no real surprises. there in the post season. Let me ask you this, though. Why are you so hell bent on spring training games ending in ties? Because the games themselves don't matter, like the outcome.
Starting point is 00:28:17 So I find it the most absurd when, like, you know, I just think every one of those games should end in a tie. So like, especially if it's like lopsided late and then someone comes back to tie the game, that's like it's like the peak, the peak spring. scenario like the game the outcome doesn't matter so i'm just rooting for like the perfect outcome is nobody wins so like that that's sort of the genesis of it we just hope that both teams have a good time that what is that sort of the participation award spring training there something like that everybody show i also don't get hurt i also think though it could be exciting too like i i'm i'm
Starting point is 00:28:58 I'm all for like a walk-off tie. Like if someone scores the tying run and then they just, they just call the game. Like we've done it. All right. It's the bottom of the night. It's like we time to, time to end the game.
Starting point is 00:29:09 That's sort of my ideal spring scenario. People getting their money's worth out there for sure. The final thing before we let you get out of here, obviously we're going to call you world renown in the game, the mastery of the pun. Do you have the Eric Stephen all time favorite pun? Or do you have like a pun hall of fame? I know this is definitely this has got to be harder this is like somebody trying to pick their favorite child I'm imagining
Starting point is 00:29:34 No look everyone asks like do you did you have how long did you have this one plant and the honest truth is Most of them is just whatever dumb thought comes into my head I'll just say that and then Just let it roll I will say one thing I did like Speaking of timing of Dodgers signings I was off the week of Thanksgiving when Blake Snell signed but I was listening to Chapel Rhone. So, of course, I basically did a rewrite of Pink Pony Club to commemorate Blake Snell signing. And there's a lot of puns in there. So, like, that was like a combo of punning and an homage to Weird Al Yankovic.
Starting point is 00:30:16 So, like, that was pretty much my ideal, like, sort of scenario right there. Worlds colliding and all that. All right. Eric, Stephen, you have now peaked then. If that was your ideal world, world's colliding. Eric Stephen does a great job, of course, guys, on True Blue L.A. SB Nation. We appreciate you very much. Hopefully we'll see you out at Camelback.
Starting point is 00:30:37 Dave has invited us to come and kind of break down some World Series decisions. So we'll see if that comes to fruition. But thanks so much for being on here, my friend. Always good to see you. Yeah, thanks for having me. Appreciate you. All right, yeah, Stephen, of course. We get into last licks.
Starting point is 00:30:53 Let's do it. Let's get into last Lix. All right, and this last Licks is a little bit different. We did this on Monday as well, but with everything going on in California in L.A. in the surrounding areas, of course, with the devastation of the wildfires, we wanted to use Gidre's Guardian as a platform to help raise money for fire relief in the L.A. So we are auctioning off a signed Taylor Swift CD. It is authenticated by PSA. So it is legitimate.
Starting point is 00:31:25 Taylor did sign this. It's the torture. Poets Department CD. You can see it there. She has signed it. Every single cent from this auction will go to Wildfire Relief in California. So you just go to 32 auctions.com slash TSC, which is Taylor Swift CD. You enter a bid, but you have to create an account first. Don't just donate. While we appreciate the donations, it does not count as a bid unless you actually create an account. So thank you so much. Let's raise as much money as possible so we can help those that were devastatingly impacted by the fires in California, certainly much more important than anything we got going on
Starting point is 00:32:02 in the baseball world. We also, before we say goodbye and Clint gets into what's coming up on all Dodgers with Clint Paceas later on today, we wanted to send our condolences to those that were very close to the legend himself, Bob Euker. It was announced today that he passed away at the age of 90 years old. I had the opportunity to meet him several times and he is just as wonderful as you would imagine, just as humorous as he seems. This is a legend, not only in the game, but just in the broadcasting world and always put a smile on every single person's face. The world of baseball lost a massive, massive icon. So rest in peace, Mr. Yucer, you will be very, very, very missed. Yeah, you obviously growing up here being a Dodger fan, you don't get a lot
Starting point is 00:32:50 of Yuc, but whenever you got an opportunity to hear the voice of the great, major league franchise you're like this is a you feel your hearts go out to to you know brewers fans in milwaukee people um just like you said people close to duke her he he had a lot of friends in this game being in it for as long as he was so uh rest and peace mr baseball yuk yeah he was on the tonight show with johnny carson back in 1971 i wasn't even around for that if you can believe that But of course, I mean, this was a career 200 hitter, Clint, 200 hitter. And he made an absolute career out of self-deprecating humor and just being an amazing human being. So you rest in peace.
Starting point is 00:33:33 Don't forget, Teoska Hernandez is coming on the show on Monday. He is scheduled to appear. Clint, what is coming up on your show tonight? You know, honestly, I might not do a show tonight if there is no Roki news or I might do something in the afternoon. But definitely we'll be live tomorrow. best way to know what's going on, hit that subscribe button, hit the notification bell.
