My guess is that he, too, will receive an undisclosed fine. That was a slap on the wrist. I don't know what this is going to be, a little tap on the took us. Here it is live. We are so happy that you are joining us on the first ever Dodgers territory show right here on foul territory. We are your host. I am Alana Rizzo. That is Clint Paseas. He has a better internet connection than I do. We are working through all of these different things. We're going to get it right, you guys. We're going to get it right. But I can tell you one thing. We're going to cover the Dodgers thoroughly. And we're going to cover it on a daily basis. And I'm so excited to be
Starting point is 00:02:42 back in terms of talking Dodger baseball. I covered that team for seven seasons. Clint is, I tell you, there's nobody better to be paired up with on this podcast than with Clint Paseas does such a great job on all Dodgers podcast. Clint, what's up, my friend? Welcome our first show. Hey, I'll tell you, your check is in the mail for saying that, for saying positive things at the top of the show.
Starting point is 00:03:04 I've already told you a few times. I'm stoked. I'm so damn happy to have you back in the Dodger world. and, you know, I said it myself. It's a thrill to be doing this with you. And boy, did we pick a hell of a season, or did they pick a hell of a season to bring on a team-specific show? We got a lot to talk about with this Dodgers team for the next six months,
Starting point is 00:03:28 seven months into a parade in L.A. Well, Fowell Territory is a little over a year old, and they continue to expand the platform, expand what they're doing. We're so psyched that Dodgers territory is the first. team-based territory, if you will, on the foul territory platform. So let's get right to it, Clint. Let's talk about the big ticket. And you mentioned it.
Starting point is 00:03:48 I never thought in a million years that Shohay Otani scandal, if you will, would be the first topic of conversation that we're having on Dodgers territory. So to get the folks caught up, of course, Shohei Otani's interpreter, Ipe Mizukhara, I should practice the way that I say that, was suspended, fired rather, by the Los Angeles Dodgers. last Wednesday because of an alleged gambling scandal in which they are calling it a massive theft against his friend Shohei Otani. Now, originally, he said that Otani was covering for him, that type of thing, helping him out with the debts. Then he kind of pulled back and said,
Starting point is 00:04:29 Otani knew nothing about that. Now, Shohei, Clint, is going to be speaking in a little under three hours. He is going to make a statement, not taking any questions. What do you think show he's going to say well i would imagine he's going to back up version two of the story we heard it's not going to be oh i was helping out my friend it this is there was massive theft i wonder how much they're actually going to mention ipe or if it's going to be just very very cut and dry dodger style of we're waiting you know it's under investigation we can't comment much on it but we're we're aware and we don't want it to cause a distraction. What is your, I mean, you're, you're the, the pros pro here. What do you, what's your kind of, you know, taste of what this could sound like?
Starting point is 00:05:19 Well, I definitely think he needs to speak. I think that's the step in the right direction as far as that is concerned, because after this broke, he was not made available to reporters. I think it is important for him that he does speak. I don't necessarily like, I understand it. I don't necessarily like the fact he's not taking questions. He's going to read a prepared statement. My assumption is that prepared statement is by his legal team. But there is a lot of things that need to be clarified here. And I'm not certain that we're going to get the answers that we're going to be, we're hoping to get.
Starting point is 00:05:54 I think it's going to be more questions than answers provided upcoming at 245 Pacific time. Of course, 545 Eastern is when Shohei Otani is supposed to make that statement. It will be interesting to see, though, what comes of it. And Clint, there is some precedent when it comes to. scandals as far as gambling is concerned in Major League Baseball. Now, Major League Baseball prides itself on, you know, being very, very strict about gambling when it comes to betting on baseball. Now, you go back to 2015, right? You might remember at the time, there was a precedent set with Jared Kosart, who was, he admitted that he himself was betting on games, not baseball
Starting point is 00:06:31 games, but other sports. Now, Sho Hay Otani has not said that it was him betting. He said he was covering for his friend in terms of, in terms of those debts. So, we're not saying by any stretch that Shohei is involved in this. At least we're hoping that Shohei is not involved in this. But if you go back to 2015, as far as this is concerned, Jared Kosart, Major League Baseball at the time back in 2015 had this to say. They've completed its investigation into CoSart's possible connection to sports-related gambling. Again, not baseball, but sports-related gambling. The investigation did not reveal any evidence to suggest that Kosart, who fully cooperated with the investigation bet on baseball. He has
Starting point is 00:07:09 received an undisclosed fine for violations of Major League Rule 21D3. And Ken Rosenthal, who's been on this program many times on the Fowel Territory platform, does a show called Fair Territory as well, talked about this the other day. Major League Baseball is very much into precedent. So if Jared Kosart, who no disrespect to him is not Shohei Otani, only received an undisclosed fine and was not suspended, did not miss any time, you'd be very hard-pressed to say that Shohei Otani is going to be suspended. My guess is that he too will receive an undisclosed fine if it in fact was found that he was involved in sports related gambling, not baseball. Yeah, we are, if that was a slap on the wrist, I don't know what this is going to be,
Starting point is 00:07:55 a little tap on the tookus. I don't know where that came from, but I don't, if, if Shohei, which we're all assuming was not the guy gambling, he's not the one directly caught up in the betting side of this or sending the money, at least to them, with his knowledge to the illegal bookmaker, I don't see Shohei getting much of, much beyond that slap on the wrist and even less so than CoSart. Maybe because it is Shohei, maybe it's a little bit more, maybe it's a public fine,
Starting point is 00:08:32 but I don't expect him to be missing any game action. And I think we have to remember one thing. We need to be patient because I do think that there's a lot more that's going to come out in the coming days, in the coming weeks, in the coming months. But we cannot jump to conclusions here and assume that Shohei has any involvement in terms of the actual betting himself. And hopefully we'll find out more information here in about three hours when he does address the media. Now, there's something interesting because if you take a look at what Sam Blum had to say, Ipe Mizuhara claimed that in his angel's media guide, he graduated Clint from UCM. Riverside in 2007. Now, the school shows no record of that being the case. So I take away from that,
Starting point is 00:09:16 wait a second. What else is Ipe lying about? I mean, is this guy a habitual liar? Like, how did this even happen? I mean, you're talking about things that are very easily checked. You can find out if somebody went to a college, if somebody actually graduated, if somebody in fact went to medical. I feel like we're watching an episode of Dateline where somebody is saying like, hey, I used to be in the military and I was a Navy SEAL and then you check their record and just like the Navy has no idea who this person even is. Like what does he have to gain by lying on his resume? Hey, it's Carissa Thompson. Everything these days is fighting for your attention, work, family, social media, and it makes it tough to figure out what should really come first. But here's
Starting point is 00:09:56 something that absolutely deserves to be at the top of your list, your breast health. Breast Cancer is the second most common cancer and the second leading cause of cancer death among women in the United States, and the rates are still rising. More women under 50 are being diagnosed too. But here's a stat that really hits home. One in two women who qualify for annual breast screenings aren't getting them. That's half. And yet, when breast cancer is caught early, the survival rate is over 99%, nearly 100% for stage one before it spreads. If you're 40 or older, you should be getting screened every year. And if you're under 40, it is never too early to understand your risk. So come on now.
Starting point is 00:10:37 Now, pay the girls some attention, head to Your Attention Please.com to learn your breast cancer risk and what screenings you might need. Trust me, your future self will thank you. Brought to you by Novartis. All right, quick quiz for the hiring managers out there. What's worse? Being understaffed or being poorly staffed? Well, that's a trick question, because both are recipes for chaos. Either way, just say to yourself, this is a job for indeed sponsored jobs. You'll get matched with candidates that meet the skills.
Starting point is 00:11:07 skills, certifications, and everything else you're looking for. Or, go a different way and get no traction. Seriously, sponsored jobs posted directly on Indeed are 95% more likely to report a hire than non-sponsored jobs. It really is a no-brainer. Starting point is 00:11:51 This is a job for Indeed's sponsored jobs. Oh, could this vintage store be any cuter? Right? And the best part? They accept Discover. Except Discover? In a little place like this? I don't think so, Jennifer. Oh, yeah, huh.
Starting point is 00:12:05 Discover is accepted where I like to shop. Come on, baby. Get with the times. Right. So we shouldn't get the parachute pants? These are making a comeback. I think. Discover is accepted at 99% of places that take credit cards nationwide. Based on the February 2025 Nilsen report.
Starting point is 00:12:24 You know, there's the old adage of fake it till you make it. And I think maybe he faked it all the way to the top of the stratosphere of what you can be doing. getting to translate and live this lifestyle alongside Shohei Otani. But I kind of want to point a little bit of a finger at the angels in this situation. Anytime I could throw the angels under the bus, I'm going to do it. Artie Moreno, you need to sell the team, but that's not what this show is about. But how do you do like zero background on Ipe Mizohara? How is there like no research in this situation?
Starting point is 00:12:59 Did not go to UC Riverside. that seems like something you could pretty easily corroborate by just picking up a phone call or driving a few minutes over to UCR and figuring it out from Anaheim. Maybe not a few minutes. Traffic is bad. Allegedly works for the Yankees. That's, I guess, proven untrue. There's the Red Sox portion of his career thrown in there.
Starting point is 00:13:23 It's, I don't put in. Are you really, like, calling up, like, UC Riverside and be like, hey, so you pay Mizukara. Do you know this guy? Like, I mean, you would think. that if you've gotten to the point of a big league level and you're a big league level interpreter that along the way those things have been checked out like I'm not here to say the angels the angels by the way right now we're the happiest people on the planet because think about the fact that they wanted shohei otani to come back and he elected to go up the five and sign with the los angeles dodgers
Starting point is 00:13:51 because he probably wants to win I get it but think about the fact that they're like who thank god we're not dealing with this mess thank goodness that we're not doing and and the Dodgers as far as Ipe is concerned. If Shohei Otani and Clint, you and I discuss this with our producer, Jeremy, off camera before we came on the show, if Shohei Otani wanted Kermit the Frog to be his interpreter,
Starting point is 00:14:14 that's who he was going to get. So if show hey says, hey, I want I pay to come over with me, that's exactly what's going to happen. Whatever Showhay wants, Shohei gets. I mean, the man has been paid $700 million. He is now the face of the league.
Starting point is 00:14:30 So the Dodgers, I don't blame them for not checking E-Pays credentials. Yeah, the Dodgers, they got unlucky in this situation. You are throwing everything you can at trying to get this guy to trying to sign the unicorn, you know, hours, less than 24 hours before he says, Shohey says on his Instagram, hey, I'm going to the Dodgers. We hear, hey, he's going to the Toronto Blue Jays. The Dodgers thought they were out.
Starting point is 00:14:57 They were heartbroken at this thing. I'm pretty sure that I could be like, hold on. before we make this official, can we see his resume? Yeah, you know what, though? The Dodgers get Otani in the trade. So what, Ipe's gone. It stinks for him. If he, A, they got, if he got thrown under the bus,
Starting point is 00:15:14 B, that he's no longer ever going to get a job again in Major League Baseball. But Shohei, I'm assuming that Shohei is innocent in all of this, okay? I don't, I'm, there's not, there's not a chance in hell that Shohei did not know $4.5 million was coming out of his bank account, whether it was to hell. help his friend get out of debt, that's, that's okay. You know, it's better than him actually betting on baseball, but I'm okay with winning in that trade as far as that is concerned. Now, Dave Roberts acknowledged that Show Hey is going to address the media here coming up in about three hours. And obviously, Clint, Dave thinks it's a good thing that Shohei kind of gets ahead of
Starting point is 00:15:52 this and tries to at least tell us a portion of his side of the story. Yeah, it's good for him. It's good for the team to at least start trying to put this behind them. You got opening day 2.0 coming up. I still think we will have a lot of questions after Shohei speaks. If he's not even taking any questions from media, you're sure as hell, like, going to have plenty of questions left. I'm trying to have to curse here. You know, it's still early for some folks.
Starting point is 00:16:21 My mom's watching, by the way. Watch your mouth. Yeah, the missus is watching out in the living room. And, you know, I don't want to put myself in a bad light here on the big time. But words and BS aside, there's still going to be a lot of questions about this. And the story is going to be far from over. But this is a start. This is an important start.
Starting point is 00:16:47 Maybe a few days too late. Yeah. I mean, I would have liked for Otani to have addressed reporters as soon as it happened. But I'm sure Major League Baseball and Dodgers, of course. want to make sure that he doesn't step in, you know, higher shit than the team's already in. I mean, think about that. It's like you don't want to make a mistake or misstep or misspeak or whatever to make it worse than it already is.
Starting point is 00:17:11 This is the last thing in the world, the Los Angeles daughters, or any of the 30 major league teams would have wanted to deal with at any point in the season, let alone before the regular season starts when all that has been happening is Shohei Otani being pumped up to be, you know, the second coming of the Messiah. So they're probably like, you know what, this is a, this is not where we wanted to be. Let's take a few minutes. Let's take a deep breath. Let's see how we're going to handle this and move forward.
Starting point is 00:17:38 And speaking of moving forward, Clint, let's talk about the Dodgers starting pitching because opening day is Thursday, but the Dodgers already have two games in, of course, against the San Diego Padres. Let's talk a little bit about the show, Hey, Otani, less Dodgers starting rotation. Yeah. Well, we get the news kind of immediately that. You have your starting five named by Dave Roberts. You are going to see Tyler Glasnow start the domestic home opener. Bobby Miller slots into that slot that Yoshinobu Yamamoto initially had.
Starting point is 00:18:10 So you do get Yoshi pushed back a little bit in the rotation there. He will pitch on Saturday, followed by Gavin Stone, and then you would presume James Paxton in the rotation there. And if we want to settle on talking about the Korea series first, I mean, I talked about it on my All-Dodger show at one point. There are plenty of questions. There were some positives in that two-game series. I think the fact that everybody came out of their healthy
Starting point is 00:18:37 and you survive getting back from Korea, fine. But before we look ahead, what are your takeaways from the first two games of the season? The fact that Yamamoto is already being babied. I understand it because you have to give him a pause. You have to give him a little bit of a break because he's not, used to pitching at the big league level, but this is also a guy that did not get $3.25 cents to come over here and pitch. This is the guy that got $325 million. I mean, the Dodgers between Otani, Yamamoto, and Tyler Glasnow shilled out over a billion dollars on three guys. I understand
Starting point is 00:19:18 they're hoping that their dividends pay far more than that. I mean, you don't sign a guy to a $700 million deal without expecting to get about $2.4 billion back in return, $2.8 billion back in return. So my question to you is, all right, so they're kind of already babying him. They're going to let him pitch, you know, one day a week type of situation. The same exact thing that Shohei Otani did when he was with the Angels kind of pitching every six day type of thing. Again, so you have to really think about how it's going to affect the rest of the Dodgers starting rotation. This is not a team that is built for April, right? This is a team that is built for October. So as long as the daughters are going to win
Starting point is 00:19:53 105 games this season, 100 games this season. They're going to go to the postseason. But you're hoping that you can maintain and figure it out before the reinforcements come back. So Bill Plunkett, who does a great job covering the team for the OC Register, has this to say, home opener we know is Tyler Glass. Now again, coming off career high in innings for him. If he can stay healthy and stay on the field, that's fantastic. Bobby Miller's young. He's unproven.
Starting point is 00:20:18 He has a few innings under his big league belt. Yoshinovu Yamamoto, he got absolutely shelled in his first game in a Dodgers uniform. They're not going to let him pitch it home. to start away. So obviously they're, you know, kind of giving him a little bit more of a protection there. And then Sunday unofficially, Gavin Stone, who's their fifth starter, who, again, is a young guy, is a young guy. And you're, you're waiting for your big guns to come back. So, you know, there's some, as much money as this team is spent. And as much as I love this team, as much as you love this team, there are some considerable question marks. You know,
Starting point is 00:20:47 we're reading and like, okay, here are the reinforcements, but you got to maintain until the reinforcements, all of Walker, Beeler and Kirsch and Dustin may come back. Yeah. And even throwing in Emmett Shee. who initially, if he had a fully healthy spring training, he was going to be that number five starter, had a fine, not exemplary debut season in 2023, but these are the guys they're waiting on. They are waiting for Walker Bueller, obviously.
Starting point is 00:21:12 That's going to be your number one guy. They need coming back. You're looking at trying to get Emmett Sheehan in there to bridge that gap for, okay, if you are going to keep Yamamoto on that six-day, you know, kind of every week rotation, the NPB rotation, or rest, you need to find a way to fill those other innings or fill those days along the way. Ryan Yarbrose is a guy who will get some, he will get some starts, he will get some opens, he will get some, what do they call that, the bulk roll in there.
Starting point is 00:21:42 But it's really coming down to you see it here on the screen that who's on that injured list. It's coming down to, they need Bueller back, they need Sheehan back and need to buy some time until that All-Star break where you might start to see Clayton Kershaw, probably no Tony Gonson this season in Dustin May. So there's a lot to be said about Walker Bueller in his situation as well. Do you think they can kind of bridge that gap or survive the month of April? They're going to have to, but you're also assuming that everybody that's in the Dodgers starting rotation right now remains healthy. I mean, I feel like every year, every single person goes on the IL that's in a Dodger in the Dodger starting staff and really in any staff.
Starting point is 00:22:21 It's like, you know, again, you're banking on two kids that have very little experience. and Bobby Miller and Gavin Stone. You're banking on, you know, Tyler Glassnow to stay healthy and give you more innings than he's ever given before in his life. You're also hoping, you know, that the rest of your rotation can figure it out, that Yamamoto figures out how to pitch in the United States, which I absolutely believe that he will. I know he didn't have the greatest spring. I know that he got sheled, you know, lit up like a Christmas tree in his first outing in Seoul. But I do hope that he can figure out that you're going to have to come inside on guys. I know a lot of Japanese pictures don't want to come in high and tight on guys and they tend to, you know, try to stay away from them.
Starting point is 00:23:02 And then they get sheled. So you're going to have to learn how to come in on guys in the United States. It's different than it is in Japan. Hey, it's Carissa Thompson. Everything these days is fighting for your attention, work, family, social media, and it makes it tough to figure out what should really come first. But here's something that absolutely deserves to be at the top of your list, your breast health. Breast cancer is the second most common cancer and the second leading. cause of cancer death among women in the United States, and the rates are still rising.
Starting point is 00:23:31 More women under 50 are being diagnosed too. But here's a stat that really hits home. One in two women who qualify for annual breast screenings aren't getting them. Starting point is 00:25:26 Yeah, they do here. Discover is accepted at the places that I love to shop. Get it? With the Times. With the times? You're playing the lute. Yeah, and it sounds pretty good, right? Discover is accepted at 99% of places that take credit cards nationwide.
Starting point is 00:25:42 Based on the February 2025 Nilsen Report. And then again, you start talking about the reinforcements, right? Who do you think is going to have the better caliber reinforcement? coming back, the Dodgers or the Rangers? I mean, it's tough to look at the five guys that are on the Dodgers injured list. And if we're talking about the totality of the season, I don't even want to be a homer about it. But I would say the Dodgers maybe have the stronger five-man rotation on the injured list. But also, when you look at the Texas Rangers, you have you have you can be a homer.
Starting point is 00:26:19 You're allowed to be a homer. It's fair. Okay, it's fair. But when you can maybe get Jacob de Grom and Max Scherzer back, despite their ages and injury history, you might want to lean Rangers, but there's another guy, Clayton Kershaw, he's pretty good. And Walker Eiffin Bueller has done a lot in this league when healthy. So maybe it's a wash. All right. We're going to see what happens, see where we're at the break, in terms of, you know, standings, where they sit in both the AL West and the NL West, of course, the teams respectively. And then we'll see who comes back. We'll see how fast that they get these guys up there and get them ready and out of necessity or where we go. All right. So that's
Starting point is 00:27:00 behind the seams a little bit talking about Shohei Otani, of course, and the big ticket, talking about the Dodgers starting rotation behind the scenes. How about last licks? And I love this, because there is some positive news when you think about the Dodgers playing internationally. they look to open up the season, Clint, against the Chicago Cubs in Tokyo to begin the 2025 season. I know a lot of people lamented that the two games in Seoul were at 3 a.m. in California, but let's face it, let's allow our international brethren to understand and watch big league baseball at a time that's suitable for them. I get it. It's two games. It sucked for us. We had to get up early. So be it. It's an international game. It's an international sport.
Starting point is 00:27:38 The face of the league now is Japanese. What do you think about the? the Cubs and Dodgers going head to head in 2025 in Tokyo. Okay, so if I am going to be Homer-ish, I am going to be a Dodger fan. I'd love to see a normal last spring training for the Dodgers for once. It's been a while. 2022 kind of effed up because of the CBA lockout. You had World Baseball Classic last year and now the Korea series. It's kind of set some things back.
Starting point is 00:28:04 However, the idea of the Los Angeles Dodgers opening in Tokyo with the starting rotation potentially headed by Shohei Otani, Yoshinobu Yamamoto. Hey, let's throw in Roki Sasaki in there for fun, because that always gets clicks here on the internet. Them guys heading that rotation in Japan, I think you would have to label that as insane and great for the sport and the Los Angeles samurai. You think they go after another Japanese superstar to add to Shohei and to add to Yamamoto? That's what the rumors say. That's what the report say. That's what Andrew Friedman will wink to you about when you ask him about Roku Sasaki. They say he wants out, he wants, he wants to be a major league baseball pitcher.
Starting point is 00:28:49 And I think he wants to pitch with Shohei and, uh, Yoshi Yamamoto. But, um, that's, that's for later on in the season. That's for off season talk right there. I mean, Dodger dogs are going to be a crap ton of money. Dodger dogs are going to be $55. Oh yeah. Mitchelada is, yeah, at least 60, 75 bucks. Maybe a refi on the house.
Starting point is 00:29:09 Like Dodger games are going to be. costing a bit a bit as long as there's tahine on the rim of the mitiladas i meant all right time now for the last licks as we just discussed the uh the dodgers and the cubs opening up in Tokyo in 2025 and i'm so excited to be able to um know mark that ding does not mean that i have an idea that's our executive producer mark weiner who uh you guys listen listen for a second clip piscius has been in this whole podcast and streaming world for a long time your girl lana rizzo has not so i am like If you saw my setup right now, I basically have like my computer is on 27 books, including my high school year books, a box.
Starting point is 00:29:48 I'm trying to figure it out. Okay, I got the systems. I'm working on it. So all of the dings are my friends texting me when they shouldn't be texting me. So no, boss. I don't have an idea. And also my boss, Mark Wiener, told me one time less is more. So let's get to it.
Starting point is 00:30:02 All right. I started a nonprofit foundation called Guidry's Guardian Foundation. The whole point is to get dogs off of the street and out of high kill. shelters. So they are kind enough on Dodgers territory to let me talk about a dog in need that needs a home. This is Trixie, and she is currently being fostered in Valencia, California, by massive Dodger fans, Amy Moore and Christina Zambrana. Now, Trixie is a puppy. She has a lot of puppy energy. She is not 100% house trained yet, but she is eager to learn and she's a good girl. If you are interested in meeting Trixie and adopting her, please contact us at Gidre's

Starting point is 00:31:46 There's a ton of dogs that are out there that need homes. Way too many get euthanized across our country. And the LA Animal Services shelter system is terrible.
