What's going on? D.T. Nation, that's what I'm saying today. I am Clint Paceous. That is Katie Wu. It is an off day for your Dodgers. My phone is making noise. Hey, did you guys know Dodgers just went live? Thank you, phone for that. A lot of big things. A lot of things are moving for the Dodgers. Again, six-game winning streak. We got some show-hay updates. Big show, so I don't we just get into it with the big ticket. Again, that's the wrong scene. Again, we are writing, listen, there's a long day. It's already been a long day. We're here. We are here. We are going to have a good time. And how could you have a bad time when, again, the Dodgers are coming off back-to-back series sweeps, six wins in a row. The difference a week makes, Katie.

It certainly felt like better Dodger baseball. And on our episode with Max Muncie earlier in the week, I think he said it pretty clearly. They're just doing the little things. There's recommitting to the little things. We're seeing more Dodger play, less kind of shaking our heads, groaning in unison. Here, a couple things I like from the series. This is more of a homestand outlook going out with the two consecutive sweeps. Overall, I thought, Clint, that we saw a much better approach with runners in scoring position.

They went 20 for 65 on the series. That's a 308 average that will play. We're seeing better at bats collectively. Take an example no further than newly recalled Alex Thomas and Hunter Perdusha starting the rally in Sunday's series finale against the Pirates. We, it's been a minute since we saw consistent production from the bottom of the order. So we're seeing that as well. The big thing, though, Quint, and we have basically this whole block reserved for this is the starting rotation. I mean, this has been the anchor for this Dodgers squad all season long.

And over the past two weeks since August 11th, they've allowed 22 run runs over 71 and two third innings. That's a 276 ERA. They're six and two over their last 12 starts. and most importantly, given the bullpen woes, they've gone six plus innings in ten of those last starts. You saw it with scubel, Yamamoto in over the weekend. You'll get Tyler Glass now back tomorrow. Shohei Otani's return is coming as well.

Oh, my goodness, here comes September. Wow, the Dodge rotation is suddenly coming into form. Who could have possibly seen that coming? Yeah, it's always the master plan here. the Infinity Gauntlet was going to come together for Andrew Friedman, Dave Roberts and Company. And, yeah, the big news this week, of course, we're going to talk about Tyler Glasna returns. And then maybe we're going to have some show. We'll talk about show in just a second, but I want to talk more about this homestand.

I know there are going to be people that, rightfully so, are still concerned about the offense. It was not a fantastic offensive showing by any stretch of the imagination, especially against a team like the pirates who, yeah, they have some good young arms with some insane high quality stuff. But I like what you said there, Katie. They did just enough to put enough points on the board to win games. And that is when you're not playing your best, when you lose Andy Pahas. We'll talk about Pahas later on in the show as well. And you're filling in with Alec Thomas, him contributing, even Kyle Tucker,

contributing on the homestand, a couple of RBI-based knocks in there. They're finding ways to win games. and that's what the Dodgers do best. When they are still playing kind of poorly, they're still not firing on all cylinders, they still find ways to win. And that's how you quickly are able to just put to bed that awful stretch where they lost like 10 of 13. Everybody's pets' heads were falling off. It was absolute agony.

Now we're happy again. Six in a row, back-to-back sweeps, and then a comfortable lead, I guess advantage over the break. for that second buy-round heading into the playoffs, which is massive for this team, an older team, and also a team that will need to take that time to continue to get healthy, particularly Andy Pahas, who, again, keep bearing that lead. We will eventually get there. But yeah, let's talk about Glasnow. We got Shohay News. We got Glasnow coming back first, starting in Atlanta. What can we know about Tyler Glassnow? My understanding, there's going to be, you know, No restrictions, just go out there and let it eat Tuesday in Atlanta.

Yeah, that's essentially it. Talk to Tyler Glass now yesterday. Talk to Dave Roberts as well about what the plan is. He's going to kick off that pivotal series, like you mentioned, Clint, against the Braves. And we know how important the first round by is for the Dodgers. With their win on Sunday, they became the 80th or their second team to 80 wins behind the brewers, of course. And if they can go and take two free from the Braves, all of a sudden, you're feeling a lot more comfortable about where you are heading into the final month of the season. and locking down one of those first two buys, though, dare I say, don't count out the Phillies and that NL East, they look really good as well.

But for Tyler Glassnow, you know, this is something that he was saying, he's just looking forward to having a normal start. He said, honestly, I've been pretty bored the last three and a half months, so I will welcome the nerves and the excitement. And when you think about Glass now coming back, it's easy to kind of have him be buried in this rotation of aces. But Clint, I mean, we know this before he missed the last 94 games with those reoccurring. back spasms. He had a 272 ERA. He had a K-9 rate over 11 and 832 whip over his first seven starts. In my opinion, he was the most consistent Dodger starter to start the season. And I was asking Tyler, you know, what happened with this ramp up, shut back down process that ultimately went from he's not going to miss really any time at all. So he's going to miss most of the season. And he was

like, you know, anyone who's had a back injury knows that all of a sudden it can just go out. And you don't really know when it's going to come back. You can't control it. He said, my mistake was I just tried to ramp up too quickly. So he actually ramped up twice and was shut down twice. Got stretched out to 90% of a full throw the second time before his back flared up again. And the Dodgers said, you know what? We got to shut it all the way down and restart. But he's back Tuesday.

No limitations. Eric Lauer available in relief. He's part of our whole rotation breakdown. We'll get to him as well. But I would expect to see Glassnow, full throttle, no rains starting on Tuesday. Yeah. And it's big. You mentioned the fact that he was having a fantastic year before the injury happened.

No seven starts. Baseball reference, 1.3 wins above replacement. And just seven starts. I mean, we were looking at six seven wins season. I'm sorry. No, boy. I'll stop doing it. At some point.

But he was on his way to having just probably a career year. But with this team, you know, it's funny with the Dodgers that you can perpetually like be without aces. They were without, you know, Blake Snell for a majority of the season, have been without Tyler Glousinow now for a majority of the season. Again, you said 94 games in there. And you still have the second most wins in the National League,

you know, 80 wins. They always find a way to just be so good. And yes, people are going to say, yeah, they got a lot of talent. They pay a lot of money for it. Yeah, but it's also other dudes plugging in and, you know, Eric Lauer sliding in and taking some starts down and all that kind of.

stuff. All that to say. Very excited to get Tyler Glasnow back, and he would need to kind of, in my opinion, move heaven and earth to find a way to impact the starting rotation because you already saw the top three over the weekend. Those guys with Snell, Scoobal, and Yamamoto are starting in some order. Games one, two, and three in the postseason, knock on desk, everybody stays healthy. And then the next guy we have to talk about Shohei Otani, you figure he's going to be a

starter because if not his use is well he's never going to be useless to say you know you can't say that with show hey otani but his his um i guess the cost benefit or whatever like he is best when he is a starting pitcher because you could actually utilize him as a 14th pitcher and he is coming back question mark pitching this sunday saturday this weekend in detroit so we're dodgers are still TBD, but I think you can read behind the Dodgers curtain enough to know that Sunday is potentially, potentially a possibility for Shohei Otani to come back to the mound. First things first, though, after throwing or facing live hitters, and by live hitters, I mean Will Smith six times on Saturday at Dodger Stadium. The next step for Shohei is to pitch a bullpen, which he'll do in Atlanta.

They think they're still pinning down the exact date there. See how he recovers. And then they'll decide if he's going to face live hitters one more time or just go straight into Major League action, No way, no, Tani, I would be very hard pressed to see him facing live hitters again, which means he'll go right back into that rotation. The Dodgers have their probable set. We know it's going to be Glass Now Roki Yamamoto in Atlanta. Scoobel, big debut on, or not debut, excuse me, big reunion against the Tigers at America Park on Friday, Yamamoto Saturday, and a very convenient TBD on Sunday.

Now, what the Dodgers can do is if Shoahe checks all the boxes coming out of this bullpen in Atlanta, he can start what start i say with some you know he's going to be a one inning opener kind of guy and then eric lauer who is conveniently available just tuesday and wednesday to piggyback and not any of the other days will then be available again on sunday to piggyback when slash if he's needed we can read the tea leaves in a perfect world i think the dodgers do start show hey on sunday nothing has been definitive or announced by the team if it's not sunday then it will most likely be Tuesday, which kicks off a pretty lengthy home stand starting with St. Louis. But right now, we're getting very, very close to seeing Otani come back, Quint. I know you and Dodgers fans are

very, very familiar with how they're going to stretch him out because we saw it, oh, that's right, last year. So you'll see the one inning stint to start, then gradually two to three, have Eric Lauer available to piggyback. I will say, though, I thought this was notable. Dave Robert said yesterday that he thinks the team will be a little more aggressive with that ramp up period with Otani. That is because of the calendar. They're going to try to get Shohei up to five innings so that he could be a true starter this postseason if needed. You look at that rotation, what it's projected to look like already. That should only be even more scary to opponents. So good news, Dodger fans, Glass Now back tomorrow. Show Hay back potentially as early as Sunday,

if not a week from now. And things are all going according to plan. It's always according to plan. Yeah, with Show Hey, I would say it's like a sped-up a spring training for him. You'll have the one inning. He'll probably be one inning, what, 30 pitches. You've got to figure next outing is up to about 50, 55. And I know one of the big things for him that we saw it last year, and he also even mentioned it this year, is I think what Saturday he faced is when he faced Will Smith a bunch of times there. And that happened, what, I think it was like four hours before first pitch in the game. And he has said, he's been open about it. I don't want to have to, you know, ramp it up and then shut down for a few hours and then go back out there

and try to play baseball for nine innings, even if he is just de-aging. It still sucks to get yourself all warmed up and then just, all right, well, I guess, I guess I wait here for a while to go back to work again. So, also for funsies here, the sooner he gets up to a good amount of endings, the sooner he can start shutting up the PCA MVP. uh you know people marching and chowder society trying to do that so this is a big week big week for the dodgers uh not only in the standings not only in the fact that we we want them to be good at winning baseball games but getting your full starting rotation back finally that's fun that's a lot of fun

and we're not even talking about roki sasaki who granted probably won't be in that rotation come october though dave roberts tried hard to pump the brakes on that conversation yesterday but rokey's had a really, really encouraging second half with his glove that has remained the entirely same size, no changes at all throughout the year. It's been totally normal. But the changes that they've seen with Roki is exactly why you spend all that agony and pain and spring training in the first half to get him to this point because, you know, you'd never want this to happen. But if something happens to one of their projected starters and they go back on the IL, you feel much better about Roki coming in a postseason game right now, certainly than you did in April. And, you know, he's continuing to grow.

So six-man rotation for the rest of the regular season. We'll see how the Dodgers divide it from there. But right now, this is, again, September is a week away. All of a sudden, the Dodgers rotation, which they have not had the projected one healthy all year long. Suddenly they do. Wow. Who is surprised? Certainly not us.

Coming in hot with some headlines. Other things, wasn't a perfect weekend for your Dodgers.

They do lose Andy Pahez to a broken hand, a fractured hand. Saw it in the moment. like, yeah, no, there's just no way. He was doing his best to be stone face while getting checked at first base, but he was not taking another at bat in that game. Had surgery to compression screw inserted in that hand to kind of get the surgery or get the healing going a little bit sooner. But Katie, this is a tough time to be losing your starting center fielder.

It's a big deal. Only, well, one, I don't want to diminish what Andy Paw has. has done on the both sides of the ball. He's become one of the best centerfielder's in the game. And you think about the rest of the right-handers and the Dodgers starting lineup. Andy Paas has been carrying the weight there. But the Dodgers have left the door open

and they've repeated that Andy Paa should be back at the end of the season. It's just a matter of how much do you trust the Dodgers and their health predictions. I wouldn't say it's the most, their timelines are the most solid going forward. However, I do think there's something to be said out. Andy, he's young, and I think there's a growing,

hunger for him to want to come back and be healthy. And that matters with a lot of guys. So we'll keep the door open on if we see Andy Paohas in the regular season. I do think we'll see him in the postseason and even more incentive to get that first round by buys everybody a little bit more time, especially Andy to get ready. The big thing for me, Clint, is sure, they can pass us up with Alex Thomas, who speed-wise, I think, doesn't have quite the range as Andy Paahas does. But granted, not a lot of outfielders do.

But he'll be serviceable. He'll be a fine replacement in the outfield. there against writers. We'll see them take most of the starts for September. We have to remember that with respect to the regular season, the Dodgers don't really care about that. They care about October. So if their projections say internally, Andy Paz will be back come October, then they're fine,

kind of weathering this. They're very, very good at finding guys that are on the outs of other organizations and turning them into Dodger reclamation projects. Al Thomas, I think, will be more than serviceable defensively. And we saw the back come around a little bit in the Pittsburgh series as well. Well, the big thing for me, Clint, and I'm curious to hear your thoughts, too, is when Paix comes back, what is that offense going to look like? You know, he's not going to get a chance to rehab in games because the minor league season will be over, most likely. And the hand injury is a big deal based on where he was hit.

As you mentioned before the show, it's his leading hand. And that can be real tough for guys to come back from offensively. Yeah, that's my big concern there. We saw it last year with Will Smith, who had the fractured right hand, his son. throwing hand, which as a right hand better, you can kind of get away with sort of leading with that left hand and maybe just shoving out with that right hand, just kind of pushing a ball or the bat to the ball. But with with with with with Pahez, that is that is a big concern there. You have to worry about the grip strength and for the people that are hopeful that he could

even make, you know, a comeback for the, before the end of the regular season, sorry, we'll get the words right. The calendar is not on their side necessarily because the final game of the season, September 27th. And then you have a few days before the start of the playoffs and all that kind of stuff. So he's most likely unless there is just insanely fast healing. And even if there is, I would try my best to not rush it because I would hate to see Pahas kind of feel uncomfortable and, you know, develop bad swing habits. And then he ends up out of the lineup again. and then so on, so forth. Still win a World Series either way, I guess.

But, yeah, just don't rush it and let him, you know, they are going to be having interest squad games during that five-day, a knock-on desk here. They do get the buy week there. They'll be in a good spot to not necessarily have him facing opponents, but this team has enough talent. You've got to figure by then Gavin Stone is going to be around. Roki Sasaki will be throwing,

the regular starters as well. he will have good competition to face internally to really test that handout and then hopefully be available for the division series. But I would just take caution. Don't rush Pahas back. I think you're, you don't need to. Yeah,

and there's no one that I would like to see have a postseason redemption tour more than Andy Pahas, especially given what he's done to the squad of the season. I think him and Max Muncie. And Friday Freeman, again, having a very quiet season, but a very good season,

those three really kind of carrying this. offense. So hate the timing of the injury for Andy. I do believe the door is open and I want to believe the Dodgers when they say he'll be back this season. So fingers crossed. But again, more incentive for the buy just allows everyone more time to recover. In the meantime, like we said, Alec Thomas will get the bulk of the starts against righties and center. And you'll see some sort of a platoon with Tommy Edmund and Kike Hernandez against lefties. Just depends where Max Muncie is playing because that will dictate where Tommy Edmund is playing, which will dictate where Kike Hernandez is playing.

Happy birthday, Kike Hernandez, by the way. It's a little bit of a mess, but the Dodgers have their depth figured out. Rosters expand next week as well. So they'll have another option there. Though I do think, wow, perfect segue to the rundown, which I'm reading at the moment, that that September 1st roster expansion will likely go to Will Smith, who starts a rehab assignment tomorrow with OKC. Again, here comes September.

wow, everyone's healthy and the Dodgers are coming back to full strength. It's almost like this hasn't been scripted before and years prior. But this is big for the right-handed production. Yeah, I was going to say, that's the big thing. You lose a massive right-handed bat, and you're going to get another massive right-handed bat back here. And, yeah, having Smitty be out for as long as he has. I mean, this is somebody that not only does he impact the lineup,

but he impacts that starting rotation. He is one of the premier game callers in baseball today. Obviously, the starting rotation has been great. You can also mix the bullpen as well, which has been, feels a little, statistically they have been solid. Feels a little smoke and mirrors. It feels a little bit like you are on edge while they have been in there. But to get Will Smith back, get that bad in there, granted, had not had a great season up to the neck injury.

But if there's anybody to have some Dave speak in here, if there's anybody where you bet on the back, of the playing card, back of the baseball card. You bet on the stuff, the compete, the character. It is William Dill Smith, a postseason hero, who is going to find a way to just plug in and, you know, stretch that lineup out. I mean, he's somebody who could be batting second for this team, could be batting in the four spot.

He could mix in anywhere, and that's just going to lengthen the lineup. Lengthen it out so much at the perfect time again. perfectly according to script, Katie. And Hunter fiducius has been solid, of course. My hero Ben Roortvet is here. I think my scales are teetering towards Hunter and his ability so far. But yeah, suddenly the Dodgers in a good spot.

There's also, you know, the word about Dalton rushing, who says he could or should be back throwing in the first like week or two of spring of spring training of September. I don't know that the team wanted him to say that, but he did. Have you heard anything new on the Dalton front? And is he somebody who could also be in the mix in September? That is something I'm working to kind of nail down because with Dalton it's all about the usage and the role he's going to play, right?

Because when you're looking at what he's dealing with, I think the Dodgers mostly expect him or penciling him in to be a left-handed bat off the bench. But I think they're going to really see where they are catching wise, especially with Will Smith's return before they make a definitive decision on Dalton rushing's usage. They do believe he's going to come back, but that the two-week period, which we're close to the end of, if not right at, of no throw or light throwing, is going to be key in terms of what he can do to recover. So no true answer on Dalton rushing yet. I would expect to know more in the next couple of days. Will Smith again starts that rehab assignment Tuesday. We'll get a better understanding of what the catching position looks like, I believe, a week from now. Because he's missed so much time, he's going to need to see at least four or five games.

and he's not going to ramp up right away. These guys, after missing a lot of time, don't go out there and play a full nine on their first day. So keeping Will Smith right along as an option for September 1st, I think there's a non-zero chance the Dodgers carry three catchers when that happens just to, you know, for as just to cover their bases. Because we don't know what Will Smith or Dalton rushing are going to look like when they come back. And Hara Feduccia, I remember in the very beginning of this acquisition process for both of these guys.

Dave Roberts said any offense we get from these guys is a bonus. Well, then Hander Feduccia surely is a bonus. player because that offense has looked pretty decent for a number nine hitter. But at least one, perhaps two of the Dodgers' projected backstops should be back by September 1st. That is exciting. Yeah, good timing, as it always is. I was going to add something else, but I forget.

So actually, I was going to mention the three-catcher thing. So I agree. I think that's the smart play for now. You don't need to add anybody else. You don't need to see. We've seen enough. Hasunk him. We know the bat is not ready for prime time.

Alex Freeland had his opportunity, squandered it. I would rather have some more protection at the backstop position as to not over-extend Will Smith. Oh, yeah, that was going to say, the rushing thing. I mean, obviously, I was somebody who was, you know, screaming from the rooftops when it happened. Just get the flipping surgery now. I don't want to have to deal with all this. Turns out, you know, he later revealed, I think you guys were at the athletic part of the

reporting that it's an injury that he has been already dealing with since, you know, being drafted. The Dodgers knew about it. When he was drafted, there's a minor, you know, tear in there. Apparently, you know, a little bit of Job exercises and, you know, some gumption will get him back up and running fine. So interesting, you know, you could have the entire 26-man roster you were anticipating having. It could be good by the time this team gets to the National League Division Series. So good stuff there. We got a little bit more to be talking about here. Yamamoto, Snell, Scoobble, and your number four starter, who sometimes isn't even needed in a series is most likely a piggyback of Shohei Otani and Tyler Glassnow. Like, that's dumb. That's stupid. But it is exactly what Andrew Friedman was talking about, even before he got Scoobble, when he said this spring, this is the best our starting pitching has ever looked. You know the bulk options in Roeke, Robleski,

maybe Shee and maybe a stone. And then maybe Edwin Diaz fixes himself. Lots of maybes coming up in the next couple of weeks. But it starts, I really think the Dodgers can go ahead and really take their advantage. put themselves out in front by taking care of business against the Braves and doing what they can to give themselves the best possible chance for that first round by. And I think that's what Kupu's gonna do for us. That's cool. This is what I really like about maybe Roe. Not only is he just like good for vibes. I mean, you see him uniting everybody. He was really under Rokees, like really took him under his wing. He gets the guys amped up for Roki's elite entrance song.

You see all the guys banging the rail. It's kind of a thing now. Mickey Rose starts all that stuff. But as you saw with that interview with Mookie, he's also super empathetic to what the game is going through. And I think it's because he went through a lot during the game. And this is what makes him the clubhouse veteran of a clubhouse of veterans, the guy that's here for Team Boral and really understanding,

hey, this is someone in Skubel who has been with one organization, his entire career. He gets, he's the biggest name. at the deadline. He does get traded. His whole world is turned inside out. He has two kids under two and a half and he's got to make it work. And the expectations for him with this team are sky high. And Mickey Roe knows that and that clubhouse knows that. But by just extending something as simple as a funny nickname, that goes a long way. And Scoobble said that to us after his start on Saturday talking about how great McGee Roe has been, how much he's embraced that. And it just felt like he's feeling a lot more comfortable with the Dodgers in Dodger Blue.

it surely will be a very emotional start for his next start Friday. He'll be pitching against the Tigers for a start back at Camarica Park. That's a lot of whiplash. That's not a lot of recovery time. That's like when you see your ex too soon after the breakup and you're like, I'm not emotionally ready for this.
