We appreciate a big guest today, Clint, on Dodgers territory.
Haley, Joel Osment, a good friend of mine.
And a huge Dodger fan is joining the show.
today. Of course, Happy Gilmore 2 is on Netflix right now. So Haley Joel will be joining us talking
all things. Happy Gilmore 2, some projects he's working on and his fandom of the Los Angeles
daughters. But first, my friend, let's get into the big ticket. Let's do it. Clint Paseas,
what is your pulse of the team right now? You know, it's a bit of a bang job there in Boston.
They lose two or three. Uninspiring play, in my opinion. Just sort of like,
the fact that we kind of feel ho-hum right now about the team playing not well, it's a problem to me.
Overall, my feeling, my pulse is like, I'm not mad.
I'm just disappointed.
And I think that's the worst feeling you could have towards a team that you have to watch and love and cover day in, day out.
But this is a team, you know, they're pressing big time, bottom part of the starting rotation, struggled there, not help by defense.
bullpen, honestly, bullpen was really good in Boston.
But the offense, leaving a lot to be desired.
What's your pulse?
Where are you at with this team right now?
Well, first of all, there's nothing worse in the world than when your parent is disappointed
in you.
I would much rather my mom yell and scream and be mad at me than be disappointed in me
or give me the silent treatment.
So the fact that you're not mad, but you're disappointed lends me to believe that you
are really, really bummed out in your pupils, in your kids, in the 20s.
six young men that were watching over on a daily basis.
The thing that I took away from this series against the Boston Red Sox are really what I've
taken away from the daughters the last couple of weeks going into the All Star break coming
out of the All Star break is they just don't seem to be able to get out of this rut.
We had said that nobody needs the All Star break as badly as the daughters do as badly as
Mooky Betts does.
So we were hoping that that little bit of a break was going to.
to get them over that hump and they'd come out firing in the second half. I understand that
there's more than 81 games played in the first half, but we're kind of not running out of time,
but we're almost getting to the point where I'm like, all right, like enough is enough.
Like we keep saying we're going to wait for the All-Star break. We're going to wait for the
trade deadline. We're going to wait for Blake Snell to come back. Like, I don't want to wait
anymore. I want to see this team be the dominant team that we know that they can be.
So that's kind of what left a mark on me. Another thing that left a mark on me is that
that Dustin May absolutely needs to be moved to the Dodgers bullpen.
I've been saying this for quite some time,
but I tell you what,
he needs to go to the bullpen.
So that kind of leads me to the next topic of conversation, Clint,
and that is what do you absolutely must have at the deadline,
which by the way is in three days?
Yeah.
Team needs a little bit of help,
needs a little bit of work.
We know they are kind of okay
with sticking with some of the guys they have internally,
but you and I were talking before the show,
and I think we're not being trailblazers here,
trendsetters and saying that they need a bullpen arm,
even though, again, the bullpen was very good over the weekend,
but my God, they need an outfielder,
they need a bat, some sort of injection of energy, something like that.
Is that where you're at?
Like, what do you need to see?
Need to see this team do at the deadline.
This is what I need to see this team do.
Number one, they absolutely must get a bullpen arm.
And what we now know, just happening today, Clint,
is we know that that's not going to be a manual classet.
Because apparently, Emmanuel Class A has been involved in what is now a sports betting investigation.
This from Mark Fein-Sand, who covers all of the teams for Major League Baseball.
According to the Guardians, they've been notified by Major League Baseball that he has been a part of their sports betting investigation.
He's been placed on non-disciplinary paid leave for an agreement with the Players Association.
So the Players Association, obviously the PA is involved in this as well.
No additional players or club personnel in terms of the guardians have been impacted apparently.
So he's off the board.
So you can forget about Emmanuel Class A.
Felix Bautiste is off the board with the Orioles because he's on the IL.
I highly doubt that Johan Duran is going anywhere.
I don't know if the twins are going to let him go.
So we must get a bullpen arm and we must get an outfielder that can flip and hit.
Tay Oscar, notwithstanding, he is doing better.
He hasn't been the same guy since he came off the IL, but I still believe in his talent.
But we have to get somebody to replace either James Outman or Michael Conforto.
That's not going to get the job done moving forward.
That and Dustin May needs to go to the pen.
Those are the three things for me that I need to see.
If he's not traded and Dustin May will end up in that bullpen or in some sort of piggyback role with Emmett,
Shee in, which is okay.
Bullpen-wise, it's tough.
And I want to talk more about this later, later on in the show for our final thought.
But there's a lot of teams that are interested in these top-tier closers and the big
names that are available.
You know, you mentioned Emmanuel Claisse.
That was already going to be a tall task or tall ass, big ass to go out and get him,
Duran.
A lot of teams are going to be in on Duran being pretty much the most premium closer
are available. Price is going to be high on a dude like him, Ryan Helsley, David Bednar,
especially in the wake of the Class A fallout here. But the Dodgers, you know, this front
office, they need to be looking at the Griffin Jacks's of the world, the Cade Smiths of the world.
If you can get a Pete Fairbanks, that would be pretty nice. Somebody that's going to be something
of a needle mover, not necessarily going to be a plug-in, you know, plug-in play closer or whatever,
just another arm to put in the back into that bullpen alongside Ben Casperius.
And of course, over the weekend, the team welcomes back Blake Trinan, which is a massive
addition back into that bullpen.
Blake Snell rejoins the team this coming weekend.
So you're getting some pieces back there.
On the outfield is my trade deadline thought of the day.
It's, it's, it's, this is an outfield.
You've been on this dude for a long time.
It might actually happen.
We talked about him a lot.
lot last year. But the way I set this up is fuck it, Lou Bob. Let's talk. Luis Robert again. The
White Sox breaking news are terrible at baseball. They're not going anywhere. And Luis Robert has been
really, really good of late. You see here since July 1st on the screen hitting 325 OPS over 925 there with a
926 spot. A couple dingers, nine ribbies plays a really, really good center field. And
this is a man who just wants out of the south side. That's what I'm seeing. That's what I'm reading
from this hot streak here. They just, the Dodgers need to have somebody better than what they
have right now. Lou Bob, Luis Robert has the higher upside over Michael Conforto. You mentioned
James Outman there. Estuary Ruiz is also an outfielder on this roster currently. And with Robert,
he is arguably the most available, not the best available, but the most available. But the most
available outfielder that can play center field that the Dodgers Cohen can go and get at this
deadline. Where are you at? The problem is, is that everybody, Lou Bob, I just love the name. The problem is
everyone is going to be, there's so few options and everyone needs, you know, a big power bat. Everyone
needs a good defensive center fielder or good defensive outfield. Maybe not everybody, but everybody
needs a power arm in the bullpen. And I just feel like nobody's going to want to overpay. So then you get
into those second tier types of guys.
And by the way, what is your opinion?
I would be fine with Lubbob.
Bring it on.
I don't care anymore.
It's an upside move.
I'm over the Michael Conforto experience.
I'm over the James Outman experience for now.
But I'm fine with Lubbob.
I mean, there's pretty good upside, not a massive, massive price tag.
Let me ask you this, though.
Are you moving away from the outfield for a hot second?
Are you on the Joe Kelly as a legit option train?
Depends on how you word it.
That way, no.
As a like free money, it's free play, it's house money right there should be a minor league deal.
Of course, if you guys didn't see the report over the weekend,
the Dodgers are going to be, or at least Joe Kelly is going to be working out for the Dodgers throwing pitches this coming week with the goal.
of honoring what he said very recently on foul territory.
He wants to pitch for the Dodgers if he's going to pitch again.
His arm is feeling good.
And it would be a minor league deal.
It would be maybe not even a spot on the 40-man roster to start.
Like, it's the best, you know, what's the word I'm looking for?
The phrase I'm looking for here.
A low-risk, high-reward arm.
Where are you at with the, what they call them, Maraci Joe?
Yeah, I'm fine with it if it makes sense.
I mean, I mean, this is a guy that, even if he comes up and helps us in the postseason,
I'm okay with that.
I don't know.
I mean, it's just like, I feel like we're grasping at straws a little bit here.
Let's see, let's see what Trinan can do now that he's back.
And let's see what the Dodgers do in terms of picking up a relief arm in the next couple of days.
We'll see where we'll ask me this question in about a week and a half.
All right.
Haley, Joel Osmond, is coming on the show.
and cannot wait to talk to him.
But before we get to him,
a quick word from our friends at Fowd Territory.
Crath, at some point, we're going to laugh
about how healthcare was so reactive
and not proactive,
and we're starting to change that with superpower.
They believe every human has 100 plus year potential,
and they're here to help you get there.
I'm a big believer in this.
I just started the journey,
so I'm excited about it.
And what do you think?
As a player,
you're always looking ways to improve yourself,
improve your health.
and this is an easy, easy way.
Superpowers made it way easier than when I was playing.
You had to go get all these lab panels,
and it was a long, drawn-out, expensive process,
but now with superpower.
So this is awesome for me.
I'm excited about it.

Hello, hello.
I'm Malcolm Gladwell, host of the podcast Smart Talks with IBM.
I recently sat down with IBM's chairman and CEO, Arvin Krishna.
And I asked him, how can companies use AI to its fullest potential to create smarter business?
My one advice to that, pick areas you can scale.
Don't pick the shiny little toys on the side.
For example.
If anybody has more than 10% of what they had for customer service 10 years ago,
they're already five years behind it.
If anybody is not using AI to make their developers who write software 30% more productive today,
with the goal of being 70% more productive.
Yeah.
Wow.
So we are not asking our clients to be the first experiment on it.
We say you can leverage what we did.
We are happy to bring out all our learnings,
including what needs to change in the process,
because the biggest change is not technology,
is getting people to accept that there's a different way to do things.
To listen to the full conversation,
visit IBM.com slash smart talks.
We appreciate it very much.
We are now joined by Haley Joel Osmet, a friend,
a guy that I've known for a very long time, really more through the Los Angeles Dodgers,
but obviously been watching him for decades on the big screen.
Great to be with you.
Thanks for coming on the show.
All right.
Of course.
Good to see you guys.
So where are you at with this whole situation right now?
As a fan, how are you feeling?
Well, we took one guy off the board today, right, that we may have been targeting.
That wasn't the best news to hear.
Yeah, I mean, as we all know, it's just going to come down to health.
If the guys we already have can stay healthy for the rest of the season,
then I think we stand to have a really good chance in the postseason.
But it really all depends on that.
I did not think that we would have only seen two starts from Snell
and Glass Nail came back really healthy.
But, yeah, we went out and got a lot of really exciting guys,
and we haven't got to see a lot of them too much in the season so far.
Yeah, who would you say has kind of been the biggest disappointment so far for you this year?
It's all been disappointing and, you know, not to lay blame at anybody's feet because it seems to be a baseball-wide problem that we're running up against the limits of the human body.
And we have these guys who can throw the ball 105 miles an hour, but destroy their ligaments in the process.
And I think Oral was saying something like this during the broadcast the other day where you see Otani throw 102, which is exciting, but you're like, maybe just 98.
And if you just throw 98, then we stand to see more innings from you for years to come.
So I, you know, and I'm no expert on this, but it does make you wonder with the influence of driveline and the weighted balls and all this stuff.
It's like, are we, is this method of training running guys ragged before their time?
I think they should really take a hard look at all the factors just to try and preserve these guys' bodies for as long as they can.
Because we're in the postseason every year, so we're not going to be getting too many high round draft picks.
Yes.
Yeah, nobody has sympathy for us, and we're always picking deep down there.
because of the year that we had prior to the draft.
Let me ask you this.
Obviously, you've been in California for a long time.
You've been doing your gigs for a very long time.
When did the love of baseball?
When did that baseball bug bite you?
I have been a Dodger fan my whole life.
It was really my roommate in college,
who was also a really good friend of mine in high school.
Oh, there he is right there with his wife in the background.
I lived with that guy who has a strong.
resemblance to Justin Turner when he grows his beard out and there's Justin Turner right there.
But living with that guy and watching all those Dodger games, even though it would be 10, 11 o'clock
at night or midnight on the East Coast, we lived in New York. It really turned me into a fanatic.
And then our larger group of high school friends, we've had a yearly tradition of going to
Camelback and seeing spring training. And since we started doing that in 2013, it really just
to send the fandom into overdrive.
So now we're all keeping score.
We're getting the stands.
We got the bobbleheads.
It's really, it's turned into a all-consuming pastime.
Well, this is the one I have for you here.
I thought this was a fun one because we know the trade deadline is here.
You get to add some players, ideally.
I've found a good way to test people's fandom or have people prove their fandom,
not that we're questioning yours at all or I am.
but if you can have one player from either your lifetime of watching Dodger baseball or over the history of the team,
that you could add to this team right now.
Who would that guy be?
Wow.
Maybe Pedro before we let him go or something like that.
Ouch.
That would be an addition right there.
You know, yeah, in my lifetime, well, and baseball really teaches you a lot of life lessons because it's so,
tied to the passage of time.
And you wish that Kershaw's prime had lined up with some of these other players that we have
in the latter part of his career when, you know, in 2014, 2015, when he was going out there
and you could half expect to see a no-hitter every time he went out and watched him.
It would have been nice had those eras coincided a little bit more.
Let me ask you this.
Is there a favorite moment that you've experienced at Dodger Stadium?
or even just as a Dodger fan,
something that perhaps just really sticks out in your mind?
I saw JT's walk off home run against the Cubs.
That was a pretty thrilling moment.
I was not there for Kershaw's no-hitter.
I was in Portland at a film festival,
and I ran into a bar to see the last couple outs
when I started getting lots of texts that night.
2020 was such a bittersweet experience because we finally got over the finish line,
but I watched that completely alone in my house pacing manically around my dining room table,
watching that entire postseason completely by myself because I was on a television show
and we were doing COVID protocols and I didn't want to be the person who broke quarantine.
even though we lost in 2018 going to Fenway for the first time,
game one of that World Series was a pretty magical moment.
And I was at game three last year against the Yankees
and got to see Freddy's home run and got to get well on the way to bring it home.
So that was pretty special.
I missed Freddy's home run at Dodgers Stadium.
I would have liked to see that.
But I watched that at a holiday end in Morristown, New Jersey.
Hey, it still feels as good even when you're screaming at a random holiday inn, right?
It's people, is this guy dying?
Right?
What's going on here?
I really, I think I upset some people in the building I was living at when Juan Uribe hit that home run in the postseason in 2013.
That was like 2 o'clock in the morning or something, and we were very loud when that happened.
And maybe one of the things I'm most proud of in my fandom was I was working in Salis.
Africa during the 2016 postseason. And I would get home from set at like six or seven
o'clock at night, immediately try and go to sleep, wake up at two o'clock in the morning, and then
watch the game until six o'clock the morning and then go to work there. And I got to tell
Karshaal that I had been torturing myself in that way. And you seem to appreciate it.
It's funny you're wearing the Tokyo kimono there. Great series, by the way. But also, I am very
tired of having to wake up a two or three in the morning to watch games and cover him here.
So I'm really hoping the boys can just stay home for a couple of springs.
It's pretty taxing for them.
I mean, I'm still feeling like it's, you know, get well soon, Mookie.
Like that, that experience was really.
Yeah.
It was so rough on him.
It beat him up.
But Japan is so, is such an awesome country and having that experience and seeing Otani
Homer in the Tokyo Dome.
was just spectacular.
So I think we'll be going there a lot more in the future, probably.
They already are planning on going back in 2027, I think, right?
Is that what it is?
Riz, have you heard this?
This is breaking news.
I haven't.
I haven't paid attention.
I'm worried about baseball not even existing in 2020.
He's so mad that they have to every spring training they're in some foreign land
and he has to get up early every time to watch the game.
Tell us more about Happy Gilmore, too.
I loved, loved, loved your character.
it. Obviously, the first one was so much fun, but you being in this movie was a pleasure to watch.
How did this all come about? How did you get involved in this project with Adam Sandler?
I think that picture was taken about four hours after Game 3 of the World Series.
We shot the movie pretty late in the year, so we were getting to set at like three and four
o'clock in the morning to really maximize our daylight hours. So that was a pretty grueling
experience but sandler's the best the um the whole cast and crew uh was really fantastic and it was
exciting seeing all of the pGA guys uh you know younger guys and nicholas and trevino and all those
guys uh truly be excited to be part of the movie and um very willing to do very silly gags um
there was one thing that that uh they cut out of the movie but rory did like a michael flatly river
dance when we have the face-off scene and they're like,
Cory, will you do like a silly Irish dance?
He was like, sure.
And we're like, oh, my God, he's so game to do this stuff.
You got to love that kind of stuff there.
Hey, I'm a big time golf boy myself, man.
One, for the golfers here, what's your handicap?
Because I, you know, scrolling through your Instagram, you're at a lot of courses,
man.
You got a golf club and your hands pretty often.
What's the handicap and what's a favorite track you played?
I'm a 10 right now.
and I really need to work on it for the rest of the summer
just because I play, you know,
I've gotten to play enough where I really have no excuse
to not be down around five or something.
But the Halcyon days of the pandemic
when we were playing three rounds a week,
that was the best I've ever been at golf.
I set my low score at Rustic Canyon.
I think I shot 77 at Rustic Canyon during the pandemic.
And I have yet to top that experience.
So is there a course that you've dreamed of playing that you haven't been able to something like a golf course bucket list?
Cypress Point. That's a that's a real tough one to get on. I you know got to play Riviera. I've been to the masters and gotten to see Augusta. I have not played Augusta.
And I've never actually I've played in England, but I've not played in Scotland or Ireland. So some of those courses out there I'd like to get out to it.
We have someone in the chat helping you to get that.
that handicap lowered.
It's all in the hips.
It's all in the...
Had to do that one.
Getting those ligaments sliced open like they do in the movie.
So it just works.
Well, the final one I have for you,
oh, you got something, Rhiz?
No, go ahead, go ahead.
I'll say the final one I have for you
before we let you get out of here
is back to the Dodgers,
obviously.
This Dodgers show.
People want to know how we're feeling
about the team.
People are down right now.
I'll ask the hypothetical.
The Dodgers win the World Series.
if
if
Snell and Glassnell
stay healthy
and Mookie and Freddie
get out of their slumps
will win
you know
Otani's going to do
crazy stuff no matter
no matter what happens
but if those other pieces
can stay
up to their standards
I think we have a really good shot of winning
I'm not as scared of the
competition as I was last year
and
When I look back on those YouTube clips of our series against the Padres, I'm like, how did I watch this without having a heart attack?
It was so stressful.
And it was so cool for Dave Roberts because he exercised those demons of 2019.
And all the times when the bullpen decisions went the wrong way.
And he was just masterful last year.
It totally wiped all that stuff off the board.
And yeah, it was very memorable.
That's a, you are definitely a massive Dodger fan.
I mean, it's not like just lip service.
You are a tried and true Dodger Blue fan.
Let me ask you, Haley, if you were to be in a movie about the Dodgers,
which Dodger would you like to portray as your character?
Who was, who was that guy that we gave a Bob,
head to really randomly.
Everybody. We give everybody a bobblehead.
There's one guy, something like that.
I'd be Brian Wilson the one month he was on the Dodgers.
I think I was at a game where he like sprinted across the field and started yelling at the
Giants manager because they hadn't gotten him his World Series ring yet.
I play that guy.
That'd be a good role.
Get the exercise.
All right.
Which Dodger would play you in a,
biography of Haley Joel Osmond.
Oh, wow.
Chase Utley, maybe?
Ooh.
Well, you got us to lay off the dairy, though.
Yeah.
I don't think anyone's as short as me on the Dodgers,
so it's going to be hard casting that role.
Well, it's a pleasure to talk to you.
I know that you and Emily, your sister, obviously,
are super busy and huge Dodger fans,
and it's just a pleasure to get to know you a little bit better.
Everybody go and watch on Netflix. Happy Gilmore, too.
Haley's character is phenomenal.
Obviously, this man has a resume that we do not have time to go into right now
because he's been acting for decades and has been incredibly good at it and incredibly successful.
Thanks for being on, my friend.
Great to see you.
Best of luck with all of your projects and hopefully we'll see you at the World Series.
Thank you so much.
Great talking to you guys.
All right.
Haley, Joel Osmond, we appreciate it very much.
All right, Clint, let's get into what?

Hello, hello. I'm Malcolm Gladwell, host of Smart Talks with IBM. I recently spoke with IBM's
new director of research, Jake Mbata. We discussed his vision for the future of quantum
computing. At IBM research, what we always do is answer what is the future of computing,
whether it's coming up with new algorithms, coming up with better AI, coming up with
with quantum or coming up with just how do different accelerators go together.
It's our DNA to answer the question of what is the future.
Isn't it a perfect problem for IBM because you kind of need to have a legacy of building stuff?
Yes.
Building actual physical machines.
Yeah, it's why I came to IBM.
I wanted the experience, the culture of building hard things that others have not done before.
Where do you imagine we are in the timeline of this technology?
There will come a point when it will mature.
Right?
Yeah.
My cell phone is a mature technology at this point.
How far are we from that point with Quantum?
By 2029, we'll build the first fault-tolerant quantum computer.
That is one that can run a very, very large, large problem.

All right, guys, this is Peyton. She's a sweetheart. She's a nine-year-old pity mix.
Unfortunately, her owner passed away, and the owner's husband was going to take her to a high-kill shelter.
How about that, huh? Your wife passes away, and you're going to dump her dog.
That's terrible.
That's for another show, apparently. But anyway, Peyton is in a foster home, and she needs an adopter.
She's super-sweet. She's a super, super-sweet gal. She doesn't have a lot of needs. I mean, just love on her and give her lots of belly rubs and kisses.
She doesn't need a ton of exercise, just an adopter.
Check us out at giddreysgarden.org and please share Peyton for a forever home.
She certainly deserves it.
Right now, she's obviously very confused.
She's looking for her mom.
Doesn't know where her mom went, but we're going to get her okay.
We're going to get her okay.
All right.
What's your thought for the road, my friend?
Big series coming up in CINCY.
Dodgers need to win.
Cincinnati needs some wins with the Dodgers in town.
There are big time wildcard implications going on this week,
but also big time trade deadline implications going on.
So, yeah, I mean, you see all of those teams,
they want the players that the Dodgers want.
And that's tough.
If you can take Knoxinsey out, one more body, one more organization,
not trying to go out and get Luis Robert or whoever else helps the Dodgers go a long way.
But I am, I don't know, I'm kind of prepared to be underwhelmed at the deadline.
That's where I'm mad.
I think there's so many people that are in the mix in terms of buyers versus sellers over the course of the next couple of days that everyone's going after the same peeps.
And you know that Andrew Friedman is smart enough to not unbelievably overpay.
I mean, I do like the team that we have.
Again, that's what I said we need an outfielder, a bullpen arm.
And Dustin made it.
Oh, by the way, Bobby Miller going to the bullpen in AAA.
Love it.
Yeah.
Love it.
That is a good, good, good move.
Dodgers. Good job. All right. All Dodgers
with Clint Passius. What do you get?
Today we are post-gaming.
So check that out. It's right after the game
ends. Check it out on the YouTube.
All Dodgers. That's usually when post-game is.
Good job. Yeah, exactly. I mean, some people go
later, and they still call it a post-game.
But I digress on
that. But yeah, subscribe to the channel there.

Just don't follow me home. And I'm
happy to talk about the Dodgers and
be, I don't know. I don't. I'm not
sad right now. I just don't know how
feel about this team. So talking about it, this is kind of like bleh. Nah, Dodgers are going to be
fine. And don't forget, Clint and I are back tomorrow. Dodgers post game. Ha, ha, ha. They're
kind of on the East Coast. They're in Cincinnati. So I can do postgame at a normal time.
Thank you to Haley, Joel Osment. That's coming on talking about the Dodgers, obviously a
huge fan. The kid knows this stuff. Go check out Happy Gilmore too. Don't forget you guys.

We appreciate you guys very much.
