Starting point is 00:01:37 I sacrificed myself to this ancient tradition, hoping to find love the right way. And instead, I found chaos, comedy, and a lot of cringe. Listen to boys and girls on the I-heart radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcast. Welcome to a brand new episode of Dodgers territory. I'm Alana Rizzo. That is Katie Wu.
Starting point is 00:02:07 Clint Paseas is with his boys in Glendale. At Campbell Beck Ranch, he's taken in some cats. practice league action, so good on him. So you're going to be with Katie and I for the remainder of this show. Don't forget to like, subscribe, Raidus 5 stars. We appreciate you guys very much as we try to make our way to 20,000 subs. I tell you what, Katie, all of the rage is the WBC. So let's get to that and the big ticket. And with good reason, we're talking about the world baseball classic. By the way, guys, Marty Caswell of Friars Territory is going to be joining us momentarily to talk about the friars as a competitor in terms of the Dodgers in the National League. But let's talk about Team USA.
Starting point is 00:02:51 Katie, Team Italy, thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Because they beat Mexico last night, they advanced. And that also means that Team USA advanced, albeit they're in to the quarterfinals, regardless of how they got there. Yeah, crisis averted for Team USA and Mark DeRosa. That could have been a pretty nasty kind of discourse. I'm not here to say what happened. Alana, you and I both know this as reporters. There are always things going on behind the scenes and aren't going to be addressed in press conferences or answered during on-field interviews or in scrums later. That's just kind of the nature of the game. It's our job to try to get people to answer, but there's always going to be some kind of underlying circumstance. So I'm not going to speculate on if D.R. thought that the
Starting point is 00:03:37 team USA already qualified or not. I think more so it's a reflection of Team USA as a whole. Dero's going to have to answer that. He's the manager. He's the one at the podium. But you have an entire coaching staff. You have a front office, if you will, a general manager. You have a PR staff. Everyone needs to be collectively talking.
Starting point is 00:03:57 So things like that don't happen. And, you know, I'm going to give Mark DeRos the benefit of the doubt. Maybe he did misspeak. But there was a better way to recover from that. Luckily for Team USA, they can chalk it up to as a lot. learning opportunity and not the storyline of what, you know, the most colossal, talented team the U.S. has assembled. We can actually focus on the baseball now and not focus on what would have been the biggest upset in WBC history, in my opinion. I mean, oh, mercy, what a blunder had it
Starting point is 00:04:27 have been, had the U.S. not advanced because of some miscalculations or whatever the situation was, to your point, this team is so talented. But that being said, they are in the quarterfinals against Team Canada, which is also a team that you cannot take lightly. Let's bring this back to the Dodgers for a hot second, Katie. Ned Coletti, former Dodgers general manager, is largely responsible for putting this team Italy together. He's the general manager for Italy. And I also want to give Vinnie Pasquentino some props, who I know is not a Dodger,
Starting point is 00:04:58 but is a friend of the program on foul territory. He did a lot of recruiting for Team USA or, excuse me, Team Italy. And it just paid a lot of dividends. Are you liking the energy that you're seeing so far in this WBC? I love the energy. I'm actually here in Miami for the WBC right now, which is why my lighting looks like I'm coming to you guys from space. So sorry about the actual look of the show today.
Starting point is 00:05:25 Hotel Wi-Fi is not always the most glamorous. But the main reason why I pitched to the athletic to please, please, please send me to the WBC is because of the environment. I was lucky enough to cover pool play in Miami in 2023, saw some insane games from DR, from Puerto Rico. And what sticks out to me about this tournament is just the passion in which players, I mean, we saw the Dominican Republic Venezuela game yesterday. Fernando Tatis did everything rounding the bases that a human possibly could to celebrate.
Starting point is 00:05:55 And it fired me up. And I had some friends that were at Lone Depot Park last night, said the environment was more intense than the World Series. And this is the kind of emotion that I think baseball needs because, let's face it, the MLB season can get a little mundane. 162 games, you know, it's the Dodgers and the Rockies for the 16th time this season. You can kind of lose the thrill a little bit. But the WBC really allows these players to play for more than themselves. They're playing for their country.
Starting point is 00:06:20 They're playing for their heritage. And you're seeing just so much passion. I mean, Team Italy crushing espresso sharts. Espresso shouts. Oh, my gosh. I hope not. That'd be terrible. espresso and kissing in the dugout, like, fire me up. I love that. The double kiss is my favorite thing in
Starting point is 00:06:38 the world. And I said this earlier on foul territory today. I think that they should take that espresso machine, Katie, and I think they should auction it off to the highest bidder. And however much money that they earn for that person to put that espresso machine in their kitchen, that money should go to the Italian American Baseball Foundation that gives scholarships to kids in the community and obviously promotes the game of baseball in the Italian-American community. Starting point is 00:07:20 One streaming now. All right, let's get it back to baseball at hand. Here we sit on March 12th. Opening day is less than two weeks away. You a couple of days ago put out a mailbag for the athletic, Katie. What do people want to know going about two weeks into the regular season starting? Big surprise. There is a lot of discourse about our pal, Roki, Sasaki, and Alana, you and I are on different sides of the Sasaki Hill, but that's okay. We can still be friends. But I think it's interesting because as a new reporter coming into a beat, I generally rely on fans to tell me,
Starting point is 00:07:55 what do you want to know? I can always go into a situation and have a feel, but it really doesn't matter how I feel about the team. It matters how fans feel, and fans feel very passionately about Roki Sasaki. So Dave Roberts clarified something that I thought had been pretty clear all offseason, but I guess not.
Starting point is 00:08:11 Roki Sasaki is going to be a starting pitcher. And I know there's been some discourse about, you know, if he has the stuff, if he's going to be better as a reliever, if he needs to go to AAA to fine-tune his arsenal. The Dodgers have the luxury to be patient with Roki Sasaki. He is in his early 20s, a generational talent, one of the most esteemed pitchers to come from Japan. With a player of this pedigree and his age and what he could be, why rush to make all of these brash decisions about his future?
Starting point is 00:08:40 If he struggles, that's okay. Most big leaguers struggle at some point, especially early in his career. So get him some runway as a starter. They need him in the rotation with Gavin Stone unavailable, with Blake Snell unavailable. They need Roki Sasaki to go out there in logs and minings. If after the month of April, it doesn't work out or he needs more help, okay, AAA exists. And there's no shame in the game if it gets to the point for Roki Sasaki to need to go down to the minor leagues to fine-tune some things. The Dodgers are going to be okay.
Starting point is 00:09:08 Again, it is a luxury to have patience with Roki Sasaki, and the Dodgers can do that. So I understand he's a very, he's a catalyst for Dodger fans. I get it. But I think it's important to kind of see the long-term view with Roki as much as the short-term and winning this year's World Series matters as well. This is one of the players where the Dodgers can really take their time with. There's no need to turn him into a high leverage reliever, especially when you know how hard it is to acquire and develop starting pitching.
Starting point is 00:09:36 Yeah, everybody was after him. The Dodgers got him. Let's go by him, do it the right way to make sure that the value is there and that he's certainly happy as well with what he's doing because that matters. It matters, and it trickles over into other things in the clubhouse. All right. Another question that it seems like a lot of people have, Katie, is what is going to happen with second base.
Starting point is 00:09:57 I know that you're not putting a timetable on the return of Tommy Edmund, but how do you see second playing out? Yeah, this is something that the Dodgers kind of knew Tommy Edmund, they were going to slow play. And that is because for Tommy Edmund to really be affected for the Dodgers, he has to view 100% where he can play around the diamond. We saw last year his versatility was limited.
Starting point is 00:10:17 Dave Roberts couldn't play him in center field because that ankle was just not trustworthy. And when the Dodgers traded for Edmund from the St. Louis Cardinals, it's because Edmund thrived as a super utility in St. Louis. He could play third base, second base shortstop, all outfield positions. They had him do that. The only thing they didn't have him do basically was catch, but I'm sure he could do that too. So for Tommy Edmund to be really effective for this team,
Starting point is 00:10:38 he has to be able to play around the diamond, which means the Dodgers are not going to rush him back from rehab until he can do that. And the reason that they don't have to feel like they need to rush him is because you have options. We've talked a lot about Santiago Espinall and Outstanding Spring, he's had this year. He's going to play his way onto this roster. He can put tune with Heissom Kim and Miguel Rojas and all of a sudden you have kind of an interesting little kind of three-way thing you can do at second base that the Dodgers weren't necessarily
Starting point is 00:11:03 looking to do, but they, again, have the luxury to be able to do. I think coming into spring, we saw Dave Roberts maybe contemplating a true starting second baseman, but I think now we're going to see more of a platoon. Miggie Roe is going to see those abats against lefties. My bigger question is, how is he going to split the platoon with Heison Kim and Santiago go Espinall, assuming Espinall makes the roster. What does that mean for Alex Freeland, who looks to be the odd man out? That's to no fault of his own. He just has two minor league options.
Starting point is 00:11:29 So the Dodgers need to play the roster game here. Having a player slug his way onto the roster and ultimately just play all around the diamond like Espinall can is a good problem for the Dodgers to have. And in a way, Espinall is kind of a cheaper version of Tommy Edmund can just kind of plug and play around the diamond until Tommy's ready. There really isn't a big concern over second base right now. All right. bullpen concerns, are there any? And if there are, what are they?
Starting point is 00:11:55 I think the bigger issue and the challenge for Dave Roberts and the front office to an extent is to figure out how do you construct what? It's like a chicken and the egg situation, right? When you know that the rotation is going to have questions, we're not sure about where Otani is, we're not sure how these guys are going to be built out, how long they can go to start the season. It becomes really hard to piece together your bullpen. And vice versa, it's hard to know and assign roles in your bullpen if you don't know how long your rotation. can go. A couple of guys are some exceptions. We're seeing Kyle Hur at Ben Casperius come in as traditional relievers. That will be helpful because guys like Emmett Sheehan and Justin Rebleski
Starting point is 00:12:29 are most likely going to have to play the hybrid swing man role. The Dodgers also have a bona fide closer for the first time in years and Edwin Diaz, obviously, which will allow Dave Roberts to work backwards from some extent. But it's really hard for us to definitively say what the pitching outlook looks like because these things are so strongly correlated and there's so many questions on either side. I do think there is, again, and we talked about this on our show earlier in the week, a benefit into knowing your role. If you're Kyle Hurt and you know you're going to be used traditionally as a reliever, you can work your spring and set your workloads up to that, same with Benkeus various. But for other guys like Emmett Sheen and Justin Rebleski,
Starting point is 00:13:07 who are going to come up as starters until told otherwise, they're kind of in that swing man role, and that's just how the Dodgers are going to roll out until there is better clarity about their rotation. I tell you what, we're splitting hairs here, kind of a quiet spring training, That's how you like it. Not a lot of question marks going into the season. How big of a threat are the San Diego Padres? Marty Caswell, host of Friar Territory, joining us next to talk about that right after a word from Seatgeek.
Starting point is 00:13:33 The number one rated ticketing app is Seatgeek, and you can get 10% off on Seatheek's app by using the Code Territory 10. So you should use it, AJ. Oh, I'm definitely going to use it for WBC games in Miami because I want to go to the semifinals and the finals. They're going to be sold out. Absolutely. Spring training games for the people out there who want to go to spring training games, absolutely great idea.
Starting point is 00:13:54 Best seats rate at 1 through 10. And I recently had to use Seekek to buy tickets to a Florida Gators basketball game that was sold out. So I love the code territory 10% off and the rating is the best. Yeah, he's talking about each ticket rated on a scale of 1 to 10 so you know you're getting a good deal. So look for the green dots. Green means good. Red means bad. And of course, we have a code for you. Like I mentioned, it's Territory 10 for 10% off your next set of tickets at Seekek. That's 10% off any tickets with promo code T-E-R-R-I-T-O-R-Y-1-0. Make sure you click the link in the description to download the app and have the code automatically added to your account so you can use it later.
Starting point is 00:14:32 Thank you to Seat Geek. I'm John Green. You may know me as the author of The Fault and Our Stars, and now I guess also as the co-host of the Away End, a brand new world soccer podcast. I'm Daniel Alarcon, a writer and journalist, and John and I have known each other since we were kids. My first World Cup was Mexico 86.
Starting point is 00:14:50 I was nine years old. I watched every game and I fell in love. On our new podcast, The Away End, we'll share with you the magic of international football, all leading up to the 2026 World Cup. For us, soccer, football, is a story we've shared for over 30 years since Daniel was the star player on our high school soccer team. Very debatable. And I was their most loyal and sometimes only fan. I love this game. I love its history.
Starting point is 00:15:17 It's hope. heartbreak, and above all, it's beauty. Together, we'll find out why, of all the unimportant things, football, soccer, is the most important. Listen to the away end with Daniel Auerkone and John Green on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. We are always privileged to have Marty Caswell on the show. She is the co-host of Friar Territory, VAL Territory Network. And Marty, thanks for being here. It's good to be with you.
Starting point is 00:15:46 We're talking about the biggest competitors for the Los Angeles. Los Dodgers in the national league. And the Padres on our very uneducated and not expert list, roll in there at number four. So let's go back to the offseason for the Padres. Do you think they did enough? What's the best move that they made? And perhaps what else could they still do prior to the season starting? I think the biggest move they made was, and it was shocking to a lot of us, was reciting Michael King. Most of us thought the Padres did not have the budget for Michael King, three years, 25 million per Now, it really makes a one-year deal. He can opt out after this year if he has a season if he has.
Starting point is 00:16:24 That's a big deal, especially when you know that U. Darvish is likely going to retire, and Joe Musgrove is working his way back from Tommy John surgery. I mean, I don't have the expectation of you ready to start the season. But getting Michael King at the top of the rotation of the Padres, it's a huge deal. I think making sure that he is in that starting rotation is a good thing. What about as far as the position players are? are concerned. Do they have enough depth in that lineup to get the job done because they're not
Starting point is 00:16:56 going to out pitch every single team? So do they have enough depth in the lineup to get the job done? I think that right now, as the roster is constructed, they are much, they're deeper than they were last season. Well, in the last season right now, the ongoing conversation was who was the Padres left-fielder? It became like a competition between Jason Hayward and Connor Joe and No, Yuli Guriel, who combined like a negative 1.2 war. All three players were gone from the Padres, gosh, by April. Gavin Sheets became a very, very, a surprise player, right, with the power he provided, adding some slug to a team that really needed it.
Starting point is 00:17:33 The catching situation is better with Freddie for me, rather than the disaster the Padres had last season, with Martine Maldonado and Elias Diaz. So I think the Padres are deeper. I'll go ahead and bring you what Tatis said in spring training. This is a much better lineup. getting Ramon Laureano from the A's deadline. The Padres are going to have a much better, deeper outfield.
Starting point is 00:17:54 And we'll see how Nick Castellanos and Miguel Andrewhar slot into the Padres' line. One thing about the Padres, and you know this team better than I, certainly. You're around the time is there is a lot of personalities, right, and different types of big personalities. How do you find in what you've seen so? How do you find Nick Castellanos kind of fitting in with the likes of Mani Machado and Fernando Titis and guys that definitely.
Starting point is 00:18:17 definitely have some dynamic personalities. Same thing for Manny Machado, who, I mean, the slogan we've had in San Diego is the Padres kind of go as Manny goes. But I think Nick's going to fit in well. He and Manny Machado have been boyhood friends in Miami. They played with each other, against each other. And Nick actually worked out at first base with Manny's brother-in-law, Yonder Alonso. So I think that Nick is going to fit in extremely well into that Padres Clubhouse.
Starting point is 00:18:45 He knows some guys. All right. First year manager Craig Stamman. It's interesting because a lot of guys are getting these positions now don't have a ton of managerial experience, although he was a former player. So certainly something to be said about that. How do you think these guys that do have the personalities that we talked about? And a lot of Bigley experience are taking to him or will take to him when it mattered most. I'll tell you this, I was absolutely shocked by that hire. But the more that I hear from Craig Stamman, the more I'm around him, the more you talk to players about him. It makes a lot of sense.
Starting point is 00:19:20 He, I mean, he knows the organization inside out. And by the way, he's not just a first-time manager. He's never coached at any level, right? You usually have guys that maybe you're in Chippolei or there are somewhere else. He's never even been a coach. But he knows this, he knows the front office. I mean, he was AJ Pellor's, you know, a special assistant, the scouting department. He's been around the team.
Starting point is 00:19:42 And he was also former teammates with Tatis and Machado and Joe Musgrove. He has commanded instant respect. And a lot of the players like the relatability factor. And that's one thing that I thought Castiano's mentioned when he first came to San Diego was it matters for him that Craig Stammon actually played the game and he played the game recently, which is also something that Jackson Merrill, you know, when the younger players and the team said that he played the game, guys relate to him, and he has commanded instant respect in that clubhouse.
Starting point is 00:20:11 So I actually think this is a, I don't think he's going to have some help, right? He, new coaching staff with him, Buddy Blacks on that staff. Black's given some tips on managing a bullpen and this and that. But I just think that Craig Stamman, he might surprise a few people in that role. Yeah, it'll be interesting to see how that plays out. He does have some good baseball men around him that, as you mentioned, Marty, have managed in the big leagues before. What does the ownership situation, maybe an update on what the Padres are doing? And how do you see that affecting perhaps anything on the field or the future of this franchise? The players will all say that they are not worried about, you know, who
Starting point is 00:20:50 the owner is going to be the only control where they can control, but they're all watching. I mean, I think Manny made some comments about the Padre's slow off season, and they were waiting for the Padres to spend some money, and they really didn't. They needed age of Prudor to do what he did last season and, you know, get a surprise signing. Like Pavetta turned out to be a bargain for the Padres. So I think, I think if you're the Padres, you want to add one more big back, one more big arm to that rotation, especially the uncertainty around Joe Musgra coming back. But right now, it's wait and see until we find out who the owner is. Now, all of the. the report seemed to indicate that could come in the coming weeks. One thing these players said when I
Starting point is 00:21:26 spoke with them, like, you know, Mani or Joe, we want a guy, we want an owner who is, who wants to go ahead and commit to this team right now because we have a very particular window of winning with Machado at 33, with Bogart's, with Bogart's, with Musgrave where he is, with, you know, Darbishop's retiring, with Michael King and Paventa for one year. So there is a very specific window. I really believe for this Padres to really be competitive. Having a new. new owner they can come in right now make an impact and spend a little bit of money would go a long way. You've covered this team for so long. You've been in the National League West for a very long time. So you've seen all of the ebbs and the flows, that is the San Diego Padres.
Starting point is 00:22:05 But they have been a legitimate contender and a legitimate threat, Marty, to the Dodgers in recent years, certainly much more than the San Francisco Giants, the original true rival of the Dodgers. The Padres will beat the Dodgers in the division. If they do what? If Fernando Tatis Jr. plays with a joy that he is showing in the WBC, because Tatis is an absolute difference maker. By his own accounts, 2025, and listen, he set a career high in run scored and stolen bases, but it was the lowest slug of his career.
Starting point is 00:22:42 If Tatis can be the player that he showed he is in April, that he's shown in the past, and he becomes, he shows more slug, the Padres will be a deep threat. Also, I will mention this, Alana, they had the best bullpen in all of baseball. The Padres bullpen had the lowest team array in baseball, and they are back with a vengeance. Robert Suarez is gone, but Mason Miller is there. And so far, A.J. Prol hasn't traded any pieces away, although he could because that's a position of strength. But they keep that bullpen intact. You know as well as anybody else.
Starting point is 00:23:10 You win with pitching in defense. You get to the sixth inning, and it should be lights out if you have a lead. Yeah, and with Mason Miller, as your closer, you can kind of go backwards. from there. Marty Caswell, always doing a great job covering the San Diego Padres. You can catch her on Fryer Territory on the Fowel Territory Network along with Heath Bell and others. Marty, thanks for your time. We appreciate it very much. Thanks, Alan. Always a pleasure getting the perspective of the. other teams in the division. Of course, everybody thinks that they have a shot when they go into the season.
Starting point is 00:25:58 Time now to give a pup a shot. Time now for last licks. All right, guys, let's talk about Peyton. We've brought this up a couple of different times, but Peyton is in a little bit of a health crisis right now. Her foster notice that she wasn't acting appropriately. We took her in, had x-rays. We just had an ultrasound done yesterday.
Starting point is 00:26:21 And unfortunately, there is a mass on her spleen. So what we need to do is have a splenectomy, however you say that. to get her spleen out, send it out to pathology, do a biopsy to see if it's malignant or benign, and then we'll get that information and have the best course of action. But it is incredibly, incredibly expensive. I don't want the mask to stay in her because I don't want it to rupture. So if you guys could help with some donations for Guidry's Guardian, I would greatly appreciate it to help us get Peyton the care that she needs. All right, we welcome me back here to Dodgers territory. Clint will be back with us on Monday. Katie, any thought for the road? I'm going to ask you
Starting point is 00:26:56 this. There's your thought for the road. I'll give it to you. What are you most looking forward to in terms of your particular WBC game? What do you want to see? Oh, that's such a good question because I, the last, like, true baseball game that I watched that mattered with respect to spring training was game seven of the World Series. And that was the most electric baseball environment I've ever been a part of. And up until that game, I would have said that about WBC pool play in 2023. So I'm so excited to see some of these teams, the underdog.
Starting point is 00:27:28 Team Italy has been so fun to watch. Puerto Rico been decimated by insurance issues, and they're still dancing a Cinderella story, if you will. How will Team USA respond? But what has really, I don't know, just warmed to my heart about the WBC is the sportsmanship coming out like Pool C, Czech Republic coming out there, just falling in love, the Tokyo fans adopting Chinese Taipei. You've seen such insane reactions from the players,
Starting point is 00:27:56 Dominican Republic, Venezuela on how they react because they're representing something bigger than themselves. And I'm just really excited to hopefully be able to capture that and be able to portray that to baseball fans. I know the WBC, not everyone is a big fan, but I really think this is such a rare opportunity to see the raw passion of players on the field. And there's so many different storylines. My goal simply to survive each day. But I'm sure that there will be a lot for us to break into and hopefully no more controversies. Just good baseball drama. Yeah, so best of luck, obviously, to Will Smith, to Yoshinobu Yamamoto, to Shohei Otani in their respective games. Clayton Kirshah has been removed from the roster moving forward. Mark DeRosa has exchanged Clayton
Starting point is 00:28:43 Kershaw out, so that's okay. It looks like he's going to be, I think he's going to be in the game with Canada, but moving forward to the semifinals and the final, I don't think Kershaw is going to be available. All right, guys. enjoy the WBC. Thank you so much for watching Dodgers Territory. Smash that subscribe button on YouTube. Please rate and review the pod.
