I don't know if you guys can still hear the music. I can still hear it. So we're going to dance. This is a great start.

He does a good start. No Clint. He is like the man with the van by the river floating down the river in a raft right now. Hopefully not thinking about Los Angeles Dodgers. Good to be with you guys. Get those questions, those comments in the chat as we get going here on Dodgers territory. Let's get right into it with the big ticket. All right, Katie, Dodgers, they are back on track.

They swept the lowly royals in three very gritty games. James. Let's talk about the unsung hero once again, a guy that has really done everything. The Los Angeles Dodgers could have hoped that he could do. Eric Lauer, the unsung hero once again. What do you like when he takes the ball? It's the same thing we've been talking about really all season long since he's come to the Dodgers. He gives, he finds a way to give quality endings and keep the Dodgers and a ball game. And we know that when the Dodgers went out and picked him up from Toronto, it was essentially as a stopgap solution. Blake Snell, Tyraudus now had gone down in the same. week and the Dodgers needed some help. And Eric Lauer, I think, has been one of the most valuable, underrated pieces on this Dodgers team. We've talked about how important the six-man rotation is. But for Lauer to come in here, the pen virtually non-existent last night, Dave Roberts couldn't

go out and say that necessarily, all part of the pregame strategy, but they needed some length from him. They did. And Eric Lauer came out and the start wasn't great, was a little worried, high-pitched count, given how limited options the Dodgers had in relief yesterday. He goes six in the third, two runs, one earned, 112 pitches, three shy of his career high. Dodgers win the ball game, sweep the Royals. Some interest in rotation changes perhaps coming with Tyler Glassnell a couple weeks away?

Yeah, that's what I was going to ask you about. He did exactly what he needed to do, Eric Lauer did, because the bullpen was down. A lot of guys not available just based on pitch count and usage. And good for him, 112 pitches for just six in the third, but he did what he needed to do. So you mentioned rotation changes coming. And perhaps, obviously Eric, Eric, Blake Snell is now back. Eric Lauer has obviously been great. Hopefully Tyler Glasnow is back at some point.

But you have to look at the fact that they're going to have to start thinking about that moving forward with the return of Blake Snell back in that rotation, the return of Tyler Glouzano eventually. What would you think would be the most realistic pending change in pending change? Yeah, I think it's a decision between Lauer and. and Justin Rebleski. And we are big Rebleski fans on this show. And I think what he's been able to do this season has been instrumental, obviously. All-Star selection really had a breakout year. But we've talked a lot about the innings coming up on a career high.

And the Dodgers, typically, as they do, downplayed it. And I can understand it. The stuff really hasn't ticked down all that much. The execution, like we said on last show, not all the way there. And when you look at how this rotation is going to come together in October, with all due respect to both guys, I don't see. Roblesky and Lauer cracking that four, that's all you need, four person rotation come on October.

So one of them is going to have to, they're both most likely going to have to go to the bullpen in October. Why not make it, why not start now? And I think Justin Reblesky's start on Saturday against the Brewers is going to be pretty pivotal for that decision. The good news is the Dodgers have two weeks-ish before Tyler Glass now is ready to return. He'll throw another rehab start Friday with OKC, four innings, 60-ish pitches. and then he's slated for one more Wednesday, five innings, 75-ish pitches,

the typical standard the Dodgers want their pitchers to reach. They're looking to activate him, which puts him on track to start the final road trip of the month somewhere along the Atlanta Detroit series. So the Dodgers can kick the proverbial can down the road. You know, they love to do that before they make a decision. But right now, I think it's coming down to Robleski and Lauer. They are going to keep the six-man rotation no matter what, though, even with Shohay, still working his way back.

Justin Reblisky, that's going to be a good game. I would think against Jacob Mizorowski. So you have two All-Stars going head to head on Saturday. You can catch that game with our very own Ken Rosenthal on Fox. Check out that. It's going to be a good series. I think that's one that you definitely have to circle. All right, moving on from the Eric Lauer performance last night to the status of first

baseman, All-Star First Baseman, Freddie Freeman. When I first saw him go into the visiting dugout, falling down the stairs, Katie, my first reaction was like, why are people not helping him? I mean, why were they not there to kind of cushion and, you know, cushion the blow there and help him? But then I looked at it from a couple of other angles. And to your point, when we were talking earlier, it almost seemed like maybe they thought that he, you know, was tracking the ball okay. And he knew where he was. Yeah, that's what it looked like, at least in real time, I'm watching from the press box.

And it seems like you're your typical pop fly and foul territory. You can see him track the ball. He gets under it. It looks like he's ready to catch it. And all of a sudden that ball starts carrying. And so does Friday. I actually look down because this is why you should. never assume anything in baseball.

He looked like he was going to catch it right there with plenty of room to go. Next thing I know, everyone is jolted up in the press box. I look on the field and I'm like, where the heck is Freddie Freeman? And you see everybody running into the dugout and immediately are fearing the worst. That was such a scary moment to see how he fell really face first down the steps. And we talked to Freddie after the game. And he was in good spirits, cracking jokes, you know, bemoan the fact that he didn't catch the ball, said this was not the first time that he has flipped into or out of the field of play and did not catch the ball.

So it was good to see him smiling. And the fact that he was able to talk to the media after a good sign. But when Friday was explaining what had happened, he said he went to go, saw the ball drift. He went to go reach tilling over the railing. Obviously, no railing there. And the way that the dugout is set up at Dodger Stadium on both sides, there are about five to six steps, a platform, and then six or seven more that. lead from the dugout to the clubhouse tunnel. So Freddie actually said when he fell, he missed that entire first set of stairs and landed on the platform and didn't hit his head, which was key

here. And the reason he didn't hit his head is because his head actually fell past the platform and was dangling down the second flight of stairs. So the whole right side of his body took the brunt of the fall. No x-rays needed miraculously. And then Dodgers think he's day to day. Again, he didn't hit his head. That surgically repaired ankle, not tweaked, and he was lobbying to be in the lineup today. I'm not so sure about that. He was pretty sore talking to us last night. Dave Roberts said that Freddie was going to have a scheduled day off Friday anyway.

Maybe it's a two-day recovery. But thankfully, everyone is okay. One of the scariest things I've ever seen in a baseball game. Yeah, he did say he went in cold tub, did all of those different things that he needed to do. It was scheduled, as you mentioned, to have the day off on Friday. Dave Roberts said that they dodged a major bull. what they certainly did. And then I looked at it from other angles and there were a couple of Royals players that were like coming over and trying to help him get up. So but from the original

angle and I know that people on the opposing team don't typically try to help a player if he's trying to make it out. I get that. But I was like, oh my gosh, you know, six foot dude falling down the stairs. I'm glad he did not hit his head. So best of luck that he's okay. And it's nothing major to be concerned about. All right, Mookie Betts. Don't look now, Katie Wu. It appears that he is heating up. Yeah. Homer's in back-to-back games for Mooki Betts. And the last seven games, we'll break down some stats. Dating back to his four-hit game against the Cubs at Wrigley Field, he's in

423 and OPS over 1,200. All four of his extra base hits have come in the last three games, so in that Royal sweep. He's playing a lot better baseball. But as we've talked to Mookie, he on Tuesday, after his first Homer, kind of downplayed it. said like we've kind of been talking in cycles this whole time every time that I think I haven't figured out. A week later, we're talking about why I haven't figured it out. But changed his tune Wednesday.

It was a little bit more optimistic, obviously, swinging the bat much better than he has. And it's been an inconsistent year offensively for a mookie. He's down over 100 points from a season OPS. But we've talked about this, Alana. He's playing a much different position now. And the transition from shortstop or two shortstop last year obviously took a lot out of him. if he's still playing a high caliber defensive shortstop and he's hitting around 240, but he's found a little bit more of his pop in the middle of the order. Are you taking that?

Yes. Yes, I am. Every day of the week I'm taking that. And I've gotten on a couple of different shows and everyone keeps asking me, what is wrong with Mookie Betts? Nothing is wrong with Mookie Betts. He's one year older as the rest of the team is. He's still, as you mentioned, doing a tremendous job defensively at short, which is the most difficult and most demanding defensive position on the field, perhaps other than Kedger, but certainly a guy that has done everything this team has asked him to do, and he's going to go through slumps in terms of his offense. The whole team has. I mean, we're still waiting for Kyle Tucker to really kind of come into his own in terms of being a Dodger. We're still waiting for that to happen. You know,

maybe it's next year. I don't know. To me, there's nothing wrong with Mukki Betts. I still will take him in the middle of the order. I'll still take him at the top of the order. I'll still take him, you know, playing shortstop. I just don't think people understand what he's done over the course of his entire season. I know people are concerned because there's still a lot of years left on the deal, but Mookie Betz is still making this team better when he is in the lineup. So to your point, I will take that all day, every day. And again, you know, because what we've seen in the last few days,

maybe he's coming around and he's going to start getting back to the numbers offensively that people are more accustomed to seeing. But Mookie Betts is just fine. All right. Freddie in a two-hole, Tay Oscar will see reduction in playing time versus varieties. This is coming from Dave Roberts himself. Katie, you had the opportunity to talk to Tay Oscar yesterday.

Always a guy that's a stand-up guy. What did you get out of the conversation with Teo? Yeah, I was able to talk to Teo post game. And this is, it's never easy for, for players of any caliber, but especially veteran guys who know they're being paid big money to slug to, to have their manager openly say, yeah, this is not the guy that we are expecting to see right now. We're going to have to give some opportunities to other people. And Dave Roberts has been very consistent in pledging his faith that Teosker will turn it around.

But I thought it was pretty telling to hear Teo's comments. I'll read him here. He said, I'm just not being consistent hitting the ball. And I'm missing a lot of pitches that I should hit. When I asked Hale about what it was like to kind of see his role reduced, at least for now, he was pretty candid. He said whatever Dave Roberts decides to do for the best of the team, I'm going to accept it. It's not going to be easy. But at the same time, I understand if you have somebody else that is doing a better job against Ritees for the good of the team, you have to make that decision.

And I'm sure we can get into the strategics and what the lineup's going to look like as Dave Roberts kind of balances all that out. But, Alana, when you hear a veteran say that openly admit, I'm struggling. and then have no ego, what do you think that message that sends to the clubhouse? I think that sends the message of a true leader because you don't want a guy that's just going to moan and complain if he's not playing well. And you certainly don't want a guy that's only going to be celebratory when he's playing well. You know what I mean? There's been a lot of times in clubhouses where I've seen guys that are playing out of their mind and then they're happy, but the team lost that night and they're still okay with it versus guys that, you know what,

I didn't play very well today, but the team won. I mean, that's the type of guy that you want on your team. And Teoska Hernandez is that guy. And you can see the quote there, obviously, that Katie was talking about when she talked to him. And you want a guy that says, I get it. Do I want to be playing better? Absolutely.

Do I want to be the guy that's running out there every single day? Do I want to be the guy that you want in a clutch situation? Do I want to be the guy that wins this ball game for us every day? Of course. But if he's not that right now, he has the understanding as a veteran player that, you know, it's team before self, right? And that to me is always what Teoska Hernandez is. has epitomized. And you want a guy to want to be competitive and want to be in there every day.

But you also have to understand that he's not playing very well right now. And if you take a look at the the left right splits for tail versus left-handed hitters, 268, 351, 451, 802 are the splits versus right-handers. He's not doing as well. 240, 295, 383 and 678. So again, this all goes back to the whole situation with, you know, Mookie Betts. What's wrong with Mookie. I mean, all of these guys, throughout the course of a season are going to have their offensive slumps and their offensive woes. The last thing we want is for all of them to happen at the exact same time, right? I mean, we have, as the daughters do, the benefit of still having an eight and a half game lead in the division. They've won three straight, but again, the potteries have won five straight.

So you can't ever take anything for granted. I mean, the Tampa Bay Rays have won, you know, nine straight. But here come, you know, the Red Sox were on this crazy tear, but they've lost five in a row. So this is such a long season. And that's why you just can't. rest on your laurels and it goes back to what Dave was saying about we're a wildcard team right now right so they have to do what is best for the betterment of the whole it's it's about the sun versus just the parts and and I think Tay Oscar more than anybody understands that I mean if you want further proof on on Tuesday I believe or Monday excuse me when when teoscar was pinched four in the sixth and Dave went to Kyle Tucker on the bench Kyle Tucker walked max munsey doubles in all

three runs who's the first player out of the dugout clapping celebrating high mapping up his guys, it's Tay Oscar. And that does a lot for Clubhouse morale. And I'm not sure just how consistently Dave is going to stick to these matchups, or to this lineup. Obviously, it's going to depend on the matchup, righty starter, lefty starter. And we've talked about how right-handed heavy, this Dodgers lineup is as currently constructed. So when you have a righty that's like tail that's struggling, find a way to mix in your lefties.

I think the best way that Dave Roberts is going to look to do that is Tucker and right, obviously, Max Muncie, a third pummy, Edmund, and left. Then you have Teosker off the bench like he did on Tuesday, that key double off the bench, pinch hitting insurance run. That's how a bench is supposed to work. And though that moment right there for Teo that he was able to stay locked in and contribute, and it was even off of right hand or off Michael Walker, that does wonders. This is a guy that the Dodgers are going to count on in September if you're going to slump,

better to slump in August. And I don't think this is by any means an indictment of how Teosker is going to finish the season. I think it's just giving guys a reset. We know that the offense up until the last couple games had really been. going through it, giving Teosker some time to regroup, making sure those lefties stay fresh. That makes a lot of sense to me. And credit to Teosker for I was handled this so far. Yeah, he knows that he's just not being consistent right now. And hit the ball, he knows that he's missing pitches that he normally would hit. So perhaps a reset is exactly what is needed.

But that's Dave's job to, you know, it kind of reminds me of like if you have a bunch of kids and you have one kid that always gets straight A's and then you have, you know, and you just take it for granted. But then you have one kid that always gets C's. And then they get a B and you're like, yay, you get a B. And the kid that always gets A's gets a B and your parents get mad at you. Like Dave's responsibility as a manager of this team is to make sure that he's putting the team in its best position to win. And you can't worry about people's egos in this situation. And Tay Oscar doesn't have one. And that's exactly what you want for your guys to be stand up like that and put the team in front of their self in terms of that. It's about the team. It's not about

And there's some pretty similar numbers when you talk about, let's start with the offense first. Let's talk about that. Basically, 5.0 runs per game for the Dodgers. The Brewers right under five at 4.89 runs per game. And then we'll get into the pitching matchups and those types of things. But from your perspective, what are you most looking forward to?

Because this could very much be a playoff preview type of situation. Yeah, for me, it's exactly that. Very rarely, especially with the Dodgers, are we at a point where we can look and say, this is a potential playoff series and this series really matters. And the Dodgers have fallen in the National League playoff standings. And this is a chance for them to get right back into it. And I think four games at home, a lot can happen there. So I'm interested to see how the Dodgers stack up.

That royal sweep was great. Sweeping a team no matter where they are in the standings is hard to do. Those were three really great ball games, though. And as Dave Roberts said, post game, they weren't perfect. There are a lot of things the Dodgers need to clean up. They made a lot of outs on the bases. The defense hasn't been as sharp as we're accustomed to. Please do not get me started on Andy Pahas and the ABS challenges.

But the Brewers, they have the best record in baseball, 74, 47. they are the kings of the regular season, meeting the kings of the postseason and some definite things that play here with the playoff standings. Well, that's a huge point too, right? The thing about the bugaboo with the Milwaukee Brewers is they are a perennial team that gets into the postseason, but they can't get that deep into it. And they're going to have to overcome that hump if they're ever going to be taken seriously as a legitimate postseason contender. I applaud what they've done, especially in that market. Pat Murphy's a great manager. I applaud what they've done in the regular season,

but you've got to get further than you've gotten in the past. As far as the pitching is concerned, I'm super excited, obviously, about Saturday's game. We mentioned it, Jacob Mizorowski, The Miz throwing 100 billion miles an hour, going up against our all-star pitcher in Justin Robleski, who goes about his business, Katie, in a very different way, but has had an unbelievable amount of success,

just kind of stick into his own game. Yeah, and we alluded to the, this in the beginning of the show. For Rebleski, he's coming off three starts where the execution and results have not been where he wants. And he is looking for a comeback to try and reestablish some of that first half success. This is a brewer's team that's very athletic.

They are very smart on the bases. They know how to work pitches. They don't make a lot of mistakes. So it's a big chance for Oblesky and a big test for him to kind of lock back in and keep his spot in the rotation. I'm not suggesting the Dodgers are automatically going to take him out and shift him to the bullpen when Tyler Glass now comes back. Again, that's a couple weeks away.

Plenty can change before then. But I think for Rebleski moving forward, to be able to put the last three starts behind him and launch his way back into his successful status that we've seen, especially against the top team in the National League right now, is going to do wonders. He gets a really tough test against the MIS, a guy I'm really excited to see pitch in person. This should be this whole series. Look at the Dodgers Probables, Roki Sasaki, tonight, Yamamoto, Friday, Robleski Saturday, and then scubel on Sunday.

Big, big stuff for pitching enthusiasts out here. You know, it's funny. This is not part of this conversation, but Terrick Scuble will take the ball against the crew. So let me ask you this. What has been your impression so far of Terrick Scouble in his two outings so far as a Dodger since coming over from Detroit in that trade deadline? I think a little bit of nerves, which he alluded to Monday after his debut at Dodger Stadium and a little bit of acclamation, understandably so, when he think about what his last 11 days have looked like.

I got a chance to talk to Scoobble one-on-one, like no cameras, just two people catching up. And that's kind of hard to do sometimes at Dodgers Stadium, given the vast amount of people there. And I was just struck by how calm he sounded, how comfortable, you know, talking about the differences and coming from a smaller market like Detroit. And all of a sudden, the challenge that comes with pitching in a big market like Los Angeles and how much he was looking forward to embracing that. And Dave Roberts said as much after Monday start, third starts a charm. He's knocked out the Dodgers debut. He's knocked out the Dodgers stadium debut. Now it's time to go out and shove like the two-time Sayung Award winner.

bad he is. That of all of the games, I'm looking forward to all four because of the fishy matchups, but Sunday is when I have my eyes on in particular. All right. Speaking of two-time Syung Award winner, and it was not in our rundown, so I'm going to throw you a curveball. Blake Snell, two-time Syng Award winner. One in each league comes back, obviously, for the first time in a while since May 9th, I believe it was. What I was most impressed with was the 10 punchouts, but he shoved. I mean, six and a third. What did you think? about his outing and welcome back Blake. That was just phenomenal stuff from Blake's now.

Because we've seen it and it's understandable. Usually when guys have missed that much time coming off the aisle, they could be a little rusty. They're on some sort of a pitch limit. And Blake said, screw that. I'm going to just punch out 10. Best fastball, the curveball, the best that's looked that I've seen in a Dodger uniform, really happy with their results yesterday or Tuesday talking to us after the game.

And to do all of this, knowing that he was going to be on around 80-ish pitches and still pitch into the six. I mean, he comes out in the first inning, strikes out the side. You're fired up. You're like, Snell's back. Here comes the playoff rotation. It's coming back to form. Scoobal is a Dodger.

Blake Snell is back. Tyler is back. I even saw Showy Otani play catch in the outfield this week. So the- what? I know. The Ace is wilder back. Kike Hernandez was wearing a shirt the other day with all five of those pitchers. I think it might have been from, I have no idea when.

I don't know when. But then he added Rebleski at the bottom, too. So just a dream six-man rotation finally coming to form for the Dodgers, maybe even better than they dream now that Scoobles officially in that mix. I'm actually more surprised. I'm not surprised about the addition of Justin Robleski. I'm more surprised that Kike was wearing a shirt. But that's for another time.

Well, it is kind of chic to adopt Chip. Chip was found near the Griffith Observatory. We've had him in our care for, gosh, almost two years now, and he hasn't had any adoption interest. And I don't know, for those of us that are watching us right now, I know you can't see if you're listening to us, but he's the cutest. He's a mixed breed boy, so, so adorable.

So our good friend and colleague, Katie Wu, Oral Hersheiser, is receiving his walk on the

holly or his star rather, excuse me, on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. And I know a lot of people are going to be there for the celebration and the induction, including Dave Roberts, Heimehattine, Hall of Famer, Jaime Haddine, Clayton Kirchah's going to be there. Joe Davis is going to be there. And you've now worked with Oral since spring training. You've known him, obviously, for a while as well. Just your impression of the Bulldog and how nice of an honor that is for him today. Oh, such an honor. And you think about what he means to Dodger fans across the board. It's certainly a big day. A lot of talk. around the stadium the last few days on on this event. And it's well overdue for someone who I've, I've just recently gotten to know oral this season, obviously, but has always been very kind, very welcoming. And I'm always bothering people in his booth. And he just, he lets me do it. But I've just been struck by his willingness to talk baseball. And when he was on our show earlier, that's kind of just a snippet of what everyday conversations are like at Dodger Stadium. And it is

not lost on me on what a privilege it is to learn and have these conversations. The best thing about my job, Alana, and I know that that you know this too, is we. We, never run out of things to talk about, especially you and we love to talk, but we also never run out of opportunities to listen and learn. And Oral, in my first year, at Dodgerland, has been instrumental in and in teaching me different ways to look at the game and sharing perspectives and just a well, well-deserved honor for our friend, Oral Hersheiser. Yeah, he is somebody that I could sit and listen to talk about pitching forever. I think of oral in the same esteem as I think of Pedro Martinez when I listen and learn so much from both of them about just the art of pitching and the

competitiveness. I mean, those, you know, when you meet Oral and you talk to him, it's like he's, he's a very, you know, nice, like mild-mannered dude. But man, when he was on the hill, it was a different guy. And that's why Tommy Lassorda named him the Bulldog. And he's just a good dude. Congratulations, Oral. We're super proud of you.
