Alanna Rizzo and Clint Pasillas discuss the latest with the WBC and the Los Angeles Dodgers! (1:16) The World Baseball Classic is proving once again to be true to its name as it has been a classic. The hosts share their thoughts on the semi-final matchup before looking ahead to Team Italy vs Team Venezuela. (11:31) As we continue our "three-peat competition" series, guest Corey Knebel joins to share insight into the Brewers. Do the Brewers have enough pitching after trading their ace to the Mets? Corey, who co-hosts "Brewer Territory," talks about the status of the Brew Crew a year after leading baseball in wins. We also dive into Knebel's time in a Dodger uniform, differences in how each organization is run, and the good and the bad with the 2021 season for LA. We'd appreciate it.
Starting point is 00:02:36 If you could help us get there, no Katie Wu today. She is covering the WBC for the athletic. We're going to talk about the World Baseball Classic here shortly. Corey Canable joins us later, of course, former Brewer, former Dodger as well in 2021, talking about the brewers. They are our final team of the biggest competitors in the National League, if you will, when it comes to the Dodgers in terms of a threat. But first, let's talk some WBC, shall we? Let's do it. All of our World of Baseball Classic coverage is brought to you by our friends at Fox One, which is live.
Starting point is 00:03:14 Stream all your Fox favorites together in one place. including the remainder of the WBC games over the next two nights. That is tonight, of course, and tomorrow night. After that, the best Major League Baseball action all season long. Thank you so much, Fox One. Okay, so potentially, Clint, the best game matchup of the tournament happened last night. USA versus DR. You were all over it.
Starting point is 00:03:36 You gave DR a lot of credit. I did not give them as much, but that was a game for the ages. Yeah, that was a lot of fun. Low scoring game, bullpens. absolutely crushed it for both teams. But, yeah, USA moves on. Dominican Republic, obviously, they have a lot of firepower, left a lot of dudes on base, had something cooking late in the game there,
Starting point is 00:04:03 and unfortunately, you know, a lot of people want to talk about the home plate umpire being a bit of an issue, that final out, or that final strikeout from Mason Miller to Herardo Perdomo, who put together a hell of an abat. We got robbed of something that could have been very special with Mason Miller versus Fernando Tatis Jr. A trip to the finale on the line. I think that was pretty tough, but all in all,
Starting point is 00:04:28 I mean, great game. And this entire tournament has been so much fun. I'm thinking about Team Italy right now that they kind of bid my dogs. We'll talk about them in a little bit, getting a little bit of the hairs in the back of your neck standing up in a fun way. But I'm enjoying this.
Starting point is 00:04:43 I'm really enjoying this tournament. I love the WBC. I have said that all along. I'm a little bit of in disagreement with you on the home plate umpire. Yes, was it a bad call? Yes. But this game and this win versus this loss did not come down to one pitch. To me, it came down to a couple of different things when you're talking about the Dominican. Actually, three things in total. Number one, learn how to run the bases.
Starting point is 00:05:05 Okay. So Fernando Titis Jr., running himself into an out, running on Aaron Judge. And I don't know that I knew that Aaron Judge had a canon like that. I mean, I knew he was an unbelievable baseball player. I don't know that he had that sort of accuracy and that sort of arm. That's bad on me. But don't run on Aaron Judge, right? So Fernando Tatis Jr. runs into and out. And then I think he was a little bit gun shy in his next stat batter, the next opportunity to be able to get to third,
Starting point is 00:05:31 because then he stood at second, probably fearing he might get thrown out again. So the base running issues were one thing that I think kind of hurt the Dominican Republic. another thing is they did not capitalize Clint with runners and scoring position. They were two for nine with runners and scoring position and against a very good USA pitching staff, which is my third reason. You have to be able to capitalize on those moments. The DR's lineup, obviously, we know they're incredibly stacked. Top to bottom, not a hole, not a give me at bat in the lineup,
Starting point is 00:06:05 but you have to be able to at least scratch a run or two. across when you have runners in scoring position. And finally, let's tip our cap to the United States pitching staff. Okay. Paul Skeens, four and a third innings. I love the fact he didn't give up any free passes, no walks. I believe he had a strikeout. So not a lot of swing and miss. Not the most beautiful outing in the world, but he gave his team a chance to win. Obviously, I think Mark DeRosa probably would have loved if Skeens could have given at least five. But I do like the fact that He gave the team a chance to win, was incredibly fired up. And then the, I almost said the Dodgers bullpen.
Starting point is 00:06:43 And the team USA bullpen shut the door. Mason Miller, unbelievable. So I think those three things, great USA pitching, not capitalizing with runners in scoring position and not learning how to do the fundamentals of running the bases correctly. That to me was the bigger picture of why USA won and Dominican lost, not because of a bad call in the eighth, and not because of a bad call to end the game. Oh yeah, for sure. It wasn't all, absolutely was not all in that moment. They left a lot of opportunities out there. I do, I agree with some of the people about, you know, you don't want the game to end there, though. You don't want the game to end that way. You would probably appreciate an ABS the ability to challenge in that moment. But that's not what this tournament has. It's not what it has yet. And, you know, I didn't talk about schemes. You mentioned skeins. That's what's really fun about this tourney. You know, you do wish you would have had somebody else. a little bit more
Starting point is 00:07:35 one more ace I like Nolan McLean pitching for Team USA in the finale but to get like one more Skeens one more Canable and this I think would have been really really fun for everybody and maybe a matchup between like Skeens Yamamoto we didn't get that
Starting point is 00:07:52 we don't even get Japan in the tournament or in the finale but it is what it is you know looking ahead I do have the bracket here let me let me go ahead and pull that up because we do have a pretty good one coming up tonight. This has been sneaky good.
Starting point is 00:08:08 The Venezuela game, very, very fun. Team Italy, those have suddenly become my dogs. Don't tell the government, I do have money writing on Team Italy as the underdog. But that's just a fun team. They're cracked out on espresso. Aranola
Starting point is 00:08:25 was an absolute dog for that team in his start. He gets the ball tonight. Maybe you have Michael Lorenzen, who was also a dog for Team Italy? maybe he gets the ball or if they don't need him, he's available to throw for the team in the finale if they make it that far.
Starting point is 00:08:41 This is going to be a good one, Lana. I love it. For those of you, obviously, I'm absolutely Team USA all the way. I was born in this country. It's the greatest country in the world. I love it. But my dad is Italian and my mom's Cuban. So Cuba got bounced by Canada,
Starting point is 00:08:58 and obviously Italy is still in it. If Team USA doesn't win this thing, I can't imagine a team I'd rather lose two than Italy. I just think it's so much fun with, and let's give, you know, Dodger, former Dodger General Manager, Ned Coletti some props here. You know, obviously Vinnie Pesquantino's the one that has been the recruiter, if you will, trying to get all these different guys to play for Team Italy. But Ned is the architect of this whole team. And he is the one that has been working on this tirelessly, among other people, of course, for Team USA and Francisco Cerville doing a great job
Starting point is 00:09:29 managing this club, the whole espresso thing and good on Starbucks for giving, giving Vinie Pesquintino, know, a sponsorship. But I had mentioned it too. And Clint, you were in Arizona on vacation, but I had mentioned it the other day. And I sent Ned a text about this. I'm like, there's got to be a way that we can auction off the espresso machine, the specific espresso machine that is in Team Italy's dugout, have all of the entire team sign it, auctioned it off to the highest bidder, whoever wants that bad boy in their kitchen, and then take all of that money and donate it to the Italian American Baseball Foundation and do that for scholarships for kids in the Italian American community, you know, kids involved, you know, wanting to get involved in baseball and some sort of internship
Starting point is 00:10:11 or apprenticeship or whatever. There's a lot of good that has come out of this. I love the energy. I love the double kiss. Like everyone's always like, because I'm Cuban, I'm Italian. We kiss everybody. That's just what it is. Like we're constantly kissing everybody and hugging and we're very like, you know, huggy, kissy, touchy people. And it's just fun. It's so much fun. And we don't often get to talk about Michael Lorenzen. He's with the Rockies now, right? We're not talking a lot about the Rockies, but he pitched great. Aaron Nola looked so good. And I'm so excited for this matchup tonight to just see what happens. Does the Cinderella team continue to go on, right? And obviously, if it's Italy and USA, I'll be cheering for the Americans. But what a fun, fun, fun tournament.
Starting point is 00:10:53 And this is what the World Baseball Classic is all about. These moments like this that, you know, people really care about their country. And this is the great. sport in the world and it's just been fun and we're talking about meaningful baseball in march 10 days away from opening day i love it yeah quickly i mean we do have a former big leaguer and current co-host of uh brewer territory cori canable ready to join us shortly so i will definitely want to ask him this as well but we've heard a lot of dialogue about the oh the wbc like this is more important this this is bigger than winning a world series usually it's people kind of that haven't won a World Series that shared that opinion? What do you think about it, Alana?
Starting point is 00:11:33 Why can't it be both? Why can't they be both exciting? Why can't they be both meaningful? Why can't they matter for different reasons? I don't think just because, you know, you want a world baseball championship, World Baseball Classic Championship, it doesn't mean that you lessen the want or the desire for a World Series championship. I think both things can be true. You want to win one for your country and you want to win one for your respective Major League team. I think it does vary a little bit based on where you're from. I think the USA is gaining ground in terms of the want and the need to participate. I think they're understanding the importance. And I mean, this was the best USA team we've ever assembled and guys want to play. The big stars want to play.
Starting point is 00:12:13 So that I think is headed in the right direction. But there's no reason you can't both, like I said, both things can be true. They're equally as important. There's just a different feel when it comes to the World Baseball Classic. And there's not a ton of guys that have had the opportunity to do both. So I don't think one takes away from the other. In my opinion, it shouldn't. Yeah, I agree. Again, I'm very interested in Corey's opinion about it. Guys, don't forget, foul territory will be live tonight with the post game. Riz, you're not on tonight. You will be hosting. I am doing it tomorrow. Yep. So I'm hosting foul territory tomorrow. And we are live from Pirates Camp. And then I will be doing the post game after the title game of the WBC. But guys,

You may know me as the author of The Fault and Our Stars, and now I guess also as the co-host of The Away End, a brand new world soccer podcast. I'm Daniel Alarcon, a writer and journalist, and John and I have known each other since we were kids. My first World Cup was Mexico 86. I was nine years old. I watched every game, and I fell in love. On our new podcast, The Away End, we'll share with you the magic of international football, all leading up to the 2026 World Cup. For us, soccer, football, is a story we've shared for over. 30 years since Daniel was the star player on our high school soccer team. Very debatable. And I was
Starting point is 00:14:00 their most loyal and sometimes only fan. I love this game. I love its history, its hope, its heartbreak, and above all, it's beauty. Together, we'll find out why, of all the unimportant things, football, soccer, is the most important. Listen to the away end with Daniel Auerkone and John Green on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. We are privileged to have Corey Canable joining Dodgers territory today. He is one of the new co-hosts of Brewer territory. Of course, longtime Brewer, that's what I think of when I think of Corey, but also a great season with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2021.
Starting point is 00:14:40 Corey, great to be with you. Thanks for being here. Thanks for having me. Of course. Clinton and I have been discussing and Katie Wu, our co-hosts as well, have been discussing the biggest threats in the National League that are going to knock the Dodgers off of their. pillar. So let's talk about the Brewers a little bit. You guys, an interesting off season,
Starting point is 00:14:59 you traded your ace away, which was interesting. Starting pitching looks thin, but yet people don't seem to be too worried about Corey. About it, Corey. What's your take on the starting staff and this Brewers team as a whole? Well, I mean, I think we've got a lot to talk about. I've been listening to a lot. I love y'all having me on here. But I think that right now, obviously with the brewers, yeah, I mean, we gave away our ace right there, but we've still got our ace in Woodruff. We still got Mizorowski. I think we've got some young guys. And obviously, it's, you know, you try and think about depth.
Starting point is 00:15:34 And obviously, the Dodgers have that. So, yeah, you're trying to, you know, make yourself like the Dodgers. But in reality, I mean, look, it's Milwaukee has done what they've done in the past with who they have. And that's not going out and spinning all this on an ace. They try and build up, progress up, these younger guys, keep a couple of these older guys in here. And look, I think that right now they're in a good spot, obviously, with Priester down. I think there's still some great guys to come up from our AAA team and who have been, you know, battling in AAA for a while, like Drohan, who I think is going to take that next step into the big leagues this year.
Starting point is 00:16:14 So I'm still looking forward to what these guys can do. It's funny. A lot of folks slept on the Brewers last year. They go and lead the league in Wednesday. They lead all of baseball in wins with 97 and 2025. First, of course, in the National League Central. Best record, baseball, all that kind of stuff, but couldn't get over the Dodgers. They get swept by the Dodgers.
Starting point is 00:16:37 Of course, you were part of a club that faced Dodgers in the postseason. A couple of clubs, I believe, in 20 and in 18. It seems to be a recurring theme for this brew crew. You know, some clubs, look at the Padres, they like to build to try to beat the Dodgers. Brewers are obviously trying to build and maintain some things in the margins, but they always find a way to keep a very, very good ball club, maintain a very good ball club, good manager as well, going from council to Murph there. How do the Brewers get over that Dodgers hump in October?
Starting point is 00:17:08 So that way I know also what to tell the Dodgers. I mean, don't let them do this. Come on, man. That's a huge hump for a lot of teams to conquer, right? It has been for years. That's just what the Dodgers are. And yeah, I've been a part of it trying to get over that hump with the Dodgers. And I've also been on the side with the Dodgers where you just, you know in the back of your mind that there's no one that can get over this hump.
Starting point is 00:17:33 And then when they do, you're surprised, right? So look, I understand. You know, that's just how it is. And, yeah, the brewers obviously have been on the wrong side of this for, you know, over a decade now. So look, it's, it's a, I think with depth, starting pitching is obviously, you know, what everyone knows of. When you've got that depth in starting pitching, when you've got Blake Smell to be able to do what he did and, what, two, three outings in the CS, it's, it's tough to match that, right? And then you got, you got Woody go down. So it's, I've seen also, look, you can have all these players, we can have these studs.
Starting point is 00:18:15 But when you have injuries that go down, then that's kind of what hurts the Dodgers, right? If they don't have the depth, most of the time they do. That's just what the Dodgers pay. You know, they've got the depth if someone goes down. So look, and the name of the game, right, is staying healthy. And I think that the Dodgers did a great job of that last year.
Starting point is 00:18:37 And the Brewers started to fall off kind of close to the postseason. And then obviously with Woody going down too, I think there were some big time injuries and other guys had to step in. Corey, you talked about dogs. And I remember when I've covered baseball for a long time. I'm very close with Sophia Minert. She has nothing but good things to say about you. The reporter, of course, for the Brewers.
Starting point is 00:19:00 You were an all-star in 2017. You were also a part of a really good pen in 2018. Obviously, Woody was there. Christian Yellich was kind of there at the height of those things, too. What do you remember about those clubs and the chemistry of those clubs that you maybe hope to see again with the 2026 Brewers or perhaps it's already there. What more can you tell us about this group of guys in terms of chemistry?
Starting point is 00:19:22 I think, yeah, in terms of chemistry, look, it's, it seems like they're all really starting to, like, crowd around the older guys. You know, the Woodruff, Yelich, Tereng is kind of stepping into that position now, too. Contreras is starting. You've got these guys that are taken over and they're really showing some, you know, positive. the mentality, right? That you see with the Dodgers where other teams like the Dodgers,
Starting point is 00:19:49 the Phillies, where you kind of walk in that clubhouse and you just know you walk in and you're going to win today. And you've got the staff on hand with the mental aspect also, you know, realizing how important that is. And I think the brewers are also taking that next step too. And mental training and how big this mental skills coach can be, which being in the Dodgers clubhouse, you see just re-imagining your thinking the way you're talking to yourself and your head is a huge part of this game being 90% mental. So the bros are taking that step too, realizing you walk in this clubhouse, yeah, you don't have a guy like Mookie Betts. You know, no one knows this guy. You know, maybe this guy's walking in and he's having his debut. But as long as you can get in your
Starting point is 00:20:37 head, right, that you know you're walking in, you are the best. This is where I need to be. then that's 90% of the game. So these guys are definitely taking that next step. And I love watching it right now. I'll say this. You know, we would be dumb to, you know, we lured you in with Brewer's talk, but I want to get some insight into that Dodgers clubhouse.
Starting point is 00:21:00 I think it's a perfect segue there. Like some of the differences you saw in your season with the organization. And admittedly, 21, like a challenging year in some ways. You guys win 106 ball games, but it feels like you're just climbing up that hill trying to chase the giants to not lose that division streak. You have kind of maladies and issues in the starting rotation, some of which we don't need to dive into even slightly. But other things of, it was a very good ball club that it felt like, you know, as an avalanche, you're trying to dodge it or whatever. We'll pin that for a second.
Starting point is 00:21:34 Just some of the differences in your time with the Milwaukee Brewers and then getting in. into that Dodgers clubhouse when it comes to chemistry, but also organization, front office, you know, Dave Roberts, all that kind of stuff. What can you tell fans who maybe want that insight into the Dodgers clubhouse into that organization? Man, I mean, honestly, you name it, dude, from when you walk into the clubhouse,
Starting point is 00:22:01 just what you see till the end when you walk out of the clubhouse. We're seeing, you know, the nutrition is such a huge thing over there and the Dodgers really understand how I'm, important it is to make sure that, you know, obviously every guy is well fed, ready to take on the best of the best and be the best of the best. And you're walking in, you know, seven hours, eight hours before the game and people already there getting in early work. It's just, you know, nothing to say that's not how a majority of teams are, but you're building this empire, this winning tradition almost that, you know, you're a Dodger. You are the champion.
Starting point is 00:22:41 this is what you're going to do and that's how they prepare with with everything from um obviously i said the mental side nutrition side strength side conditioning side um and then obviously with the numbers you know you've still got mcgregor over there um or sorry McGregor McGregor McGinnis who who's just the guru man and and on the pitching side like that was the guy that that everyone wanted to talk to you want to get into inside of his brain. And that's, that's what's going to make you elite in every aspect. Like really, if you're in something, if you're in a slump, that's the guy to get you out of it. And obviously, something that I started noticing, too, the way that they,
Starting point is 00:23:28 the way that they kind of call the game and before the game, the way they prepare with Dave Robertson, you know, your bullpen coaches, the pitching coaches, it's, it's, we know when guys are going in and who they're going to face. It's not a matter of, he's going to come into the sixth inning, the seventh inning. This guy is going to be closing that. It's, I'm going to be facing these three hitters tonight, and that's either going to be the sixth, seventh, or eighth. It might even be the fourth or the fifth, but I know that I am mentally prepared for
Starting point is 00:23:57 these three guys at least. So they do like to set people up for success, too. They're really, really good at that, right? They know what your stuff is going to play really good against this guy, so we're going put you in here. And same thing on the hitting side of it, too. They're doing exactly that when they're trying to set their lineups on where it's going to be. Obviously, it's
Starting point is 00:24:18 a pretty hard problem to have, right? When you've got Freeman, Mooky, Muncie, it's just it's a hard problem right there. You know, it's funny you bring that up, but that's a narrative that fans have long liked to share or mention online a whole bunch
Starting point is 00:24:34 about, you know, the Dodgers laptop and the computers and everybody talks about the computers in the game right now. Oh, no, analytics. That's so bad for helping win a ballgame. But it feels like the Dodgers will definitely have that. Like, yeah, you mentioned, you know, you know the lane that in an ideal world, maybe you've got to, you know, get up and start getting loose in the third if, you know,
Starting point is 00:24:53 your starting pitcher goes sideways that particular day or something. But chances are you know your lane and you know, like, okay, I'm going to pitch today and then maybe tomorrow in like two days off. Is that something that you're seeing, you know, just being around the game more? Obviously, you know, you've been out of it. for out of throwing for a couple of seasons now, but the more you pay attention, the more you hear from other people, other players, from different organizations. Are you seeing that kind of more than maybe when you were first getting into pro ball about knowing exactly
Starting point is 00:25:25 in an ideal world when you're going to pitch and following the analytics and the computers and all of that? Yeah, I think obviously, you know, coming into the game seeing that, all right, you got, you know your roles, right? You got your starting pitchers who they're going to be you're starting pitchers and they're just going to go. And then you got your closer and then you got your setup man. And then you've got like three guys that are long relievers, mid relievers, whatever it is. And now the game's just kind of, you know, changing a lot, right? And we've seen it.
Starting point is 00:25:53 And I think the Dodgers have done a really good job of having their short inning guys kind of tailoring off. And they give the two days off and they love to give the rest. They make sure the rest is important because those winning teams, they know how to make sure we regulate those innings, regulate those appearances, going into the postseason because we know we're going to be there. And I think now the Brewers are at that position as well. They are also obviously trying to win the division and trying to make sure that they, you know, last year, win the whole national league, well, in terms of regular season
Starting point is 00:26:26 wins-wise. But, you know, they're starting to see how important it is to have these guys kind of make sure that they're rested, but, you know, put into right situations. and oh god, I completely lost my train of thought right there. That's all right. Trust me. Let me put you on this train of thought. The 2021 team, do you think what happened at the end, Corey, was just health or lack
Starting point is 00:26:59 there of? Or was there something else missing? Because sometimes I feel like it's whoever is the healthiest and whoever is playing the best ball at the right time. because this season is so dang long that if you're not playing the best ball that you can when it matters the most, or if you're banged up,
Starting point is 00:27:15 you don't really have a shot. Was there something else missing, or was it as simple as health? No, you know, it's, that's tough in this game, right? Especially when you get to that point. Yeah, everyone, it's who's hot, who's the hottest? And, yeah, I mean, everyone's got injuries that they're dealing with, but, you know, sometimes stuff happens, right?
Starting point is 00:27:38 bad things happened. And yeah, there was, we had some injuries. Obviously, it was a, it was one of those seasons where there was a lot of injuries kind of going around during the season. I got hurt beginning this season. I know Kershaw was down. We had Edwin, Rios, go down. So there's been, obviously the postseason happened and Scherzer needing a couple more days, too.
Starting point is 00:28:03 It's stuff like that happens. And we still kind of fill in, go from there on. Joe Kelly goes down to it. Game five. So, yeah, I mean, look, we were always prepared for it. We're prepared to step in that next role. But you also look at what happened in 18 with the Brewers. We had everybody healthy.
Starting point is 00:28:24 Everybody was completely healthy. The Dodgers, I'm pretty positive they had everyone healthy too. And it still went to game seven. So it's, you know, who knows what would have happened if someone, God forbid, did with the Dodgers that year might have been injured going into the NLCS. Would that have changed anything? Who knows? They would have had someone step in and maybe he would have had the season or the,
Starting point is 00:28:47 whatever, playoffs of his year, the championship series. There we go. So, yeah, it's baseball, right? It's just, it's what we do. We're prepared to step in when we have to. You know, the final one on that, you know, I don't want to bring up the bad memories or maybe good memories of 21. sure there was definitely a mix of it, but you mentioned health.
Starting point is 00:29:09 You mentioned, you know, yeah, the Joe Kelly thing, I could think back to even J.T. You know, blowing out a hammy, just everything that kind of felt like it could go wrong to end that season did go wrong, unfortunately. And you mentioned Mad Max, you know, Scher obviously being a maybe one or two days behind schedule coming off of coming in to close that game, game five against Giants. Like how big of a blow was it to that clubhouse? And then also to another side of it. Bueller kind of stepping up, putting his sack on the table, be like, bro, I'll do what I can
Starting point is 00:29:41 to get us to advance into a series. Yeah. He did. Yeah, but the thoughts, what was the blow on the Scherzer side of it first? Man, I mean, look, you bring up good and bad, right? We went to game five in San Francisco, man. That series was electric. We battled him the whole season with who's going to take the West title. And, yeah, they got it.
Starting point is 00:30:05 But at the end, we got the last laugh. And that was a really good memory. And I mean, I started that game, too. That was, it was sick. I started back to that playoff games. You can't, you can't be upset. Who can say they've done that? Almost the Amamoto.
Starting point is 00:30:22 Almost. Yeah, yeah, almost. That's true. That's true. It was, yeah, it was definitely one of those where, you know, look, they played everything right. You play to win. That's game five. That is, it's equivalent to game seven, right, in the championship series and world series.
Starting point is 00:30:41 So you're putting everything out of the line. You're not thinking about that next step. Scherzer had the ball. He's going in, and he is taking care of business. And, yeah, obviously we wanted him to start game one, but who knows we were going to get to game one? If Scherzer didn't come to the game. So, you know, everything played out exactly how we wanted to as a team. And, you focus on.
Starting point is 00:31:04 the future later on, right? It's not happening right now. So, and we went into the day before and Scherzer was honest. He's like, hey, I'm gonna give you everything I got. And what was that game? Game three, I believe he threw. So, and yeah, we tried to step in
Starting point is 00:31:19 and thought we did a pretty dang good job. And obviously the Braves were ready to rock, man. Well, I tell you what, the term dead arm still gives me nightmares. So there's that. So yeah, get that. All right, before we let you go, Corey, Is your nickname actually Bird Dog? And if it is, why?
Starting point is 00:31:39 All right. Yeah, my nickname in college was Bird Dog. I mean, I was a freshman. I was just happy to be at the University of Texas. And I couldn't believe I'm playing ball. And I got our hitting coach who couldn't stand pitchers at all. Tommy Harmon loved to get on to pitchers, like hitters or the, the, real athletes. And so we always had a battle. And he always made during any BP scrimmages,
Starting point is 00:32:11 whatever it was, you know, all the freshmen had to be on ball duty, charting, cleaning up foul balls, whatever it was. And he just got to a point where I realized that's what it was. And every foul ball, I chased after. I went after everyone. I didn't wait on him to yell at a pitcher to go do it. I just did it. And so he finally, yeah, it was like, Canable, you're just like my bird dog, man. You're just happy to go fetch the little balls without me even telling you. So it just kind of stuck. And I guess
Starting point is 00:32:40 people I told about it in pro ball. And yeah, it just... And that does sound like a Texas, a Texas coach. Yeah. And you're just going to get my drill bird dog. You better go get them bird. That's right. I don't even have to tell you to go get that bird.
Starting point is 00:32:54 You just go get it. That's right. You know, Alon, I wanted to talk to y'all too. I heard y'all talking about the WBC. That was when y'all were asking about I forgot to throw that back out there. The difference in winning a World Series and all that, yeah. Okay, right.
Starting point is 00:33:10 And so I think obviously hearing it, yeah, I think you're spot on. That's exactly how the players feel. You're going to have some mix where like, no, I'm here to win a World Series. You know, this is what I'm here to do. And yes, I also love my country. But at the same time, like, you know, some people might just have that thought. That's a long season. And now you're asking me to get ready for the season a month
Starting point is 00:33:33 and a half to two months earlier than I normally would because yeah you're not just going to play for USA and be yeah I'm ready to go no I want to be at my elite status which is what a lot of these guys are you know we got these studs in our lineup that they're not just showing up because yeah we're going to play and you know it's a warm up to get ready for the season no I'm going to win for my country and I think it's awesome to see both sides you know if you were asked to be in it and you declined it I know you have great reasons for it I mean, I'm sure I've been in the same boat. I never got asked, but I would have been in the same boat.
Starting point is 00:34:09 So I think that, you know, whoever chose to do it and they're rocking, you know, Will Smith, obviously, I love watching terrain over there at second two. This is, I love seeing all my old teammates that I've played with or been throwing partners with and they're representing our country. It is so awesome to see. And so, no, I'm excited for this World Baseball Classic for sure. Yeah, it's been a lot of fun. I mean, I'll take one. I don't know if they give out a ring, but if I could win one, you know, WBC,
Starting point is 00:34:37 I can win a World Series. I had 100%. You had a Dodger in it. Yeah, let me get one. Exactly. Do it for Smitty. We're all rooting for Smitty now. Corey, this was a lot of fun, man.
Starting point is 00:34:46 We appreciate you. Next time, brewers are in town or the other way around. We'll actually bug you more about the brewer's side of things. Well, they're actually playing today in spring training. So there you go. The Brewers and the men are. They are.
Starting point is 00:34:59 I saw that. There you go. That's right. But, guys, catch more, of course, of Corey Knave along with Kurt. Is it Kurt? Yeah, Kurt Hogue on Brewer Territory. You guys are live a couple, or are post a couple times a week talking about that brew crew. Again, don't sleep on the brew crew, guys.
Starting point is 00:35:17 They are going to figure out something like they always do. They'll piece some things together. You still got Yelly over there, and they got Jacob Mizorowski, who was just a lot of fun to watch. So, Corey, we appreciate the time, man. We'll talk soon. Thanks, Lori. Thanks, guys. I'm John Green. You may know me as the author of The Fault and Our Stars, and now I guess also as the co-host of The Away End, a brand new world soccer podcast.
Starting point is 00:35:41 I'm Daniel Alarcon, a writer and journalist, and John and I have known each other since we were kids. My first World Cup was Mexico 86. I was nine years old. I watched every game and I fell in love. On our new podcast, The Away End, we'll share with you the magic of international football, all leading up to the 2026 World Cup. For us, soccer, football, is a story we've shared for. over 30 years since Daniel was the star player on our high school soccer team. Very debatable. And I was their most loyal and sometimes only fan. I love this game.
Starting point is 00:36:13 I love its history, it's hope, it's heartbreak, and above all, it's beauty. Together, we'll find out why, of all the unimportant things, football, soccer, is the most important. Listen to the away end with Daniel Auerkone and John Green on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts. Heart and TikTok have come together to create something new. Starting point is 00:37:03 A ambitious, well-intentioned, ferocious, and wealthy mother looks like in the black community. What do you say?
Starting point is 00:37:50 Again, we're going to talk about the whole Dodger Stadium thing, everybody. Don't leave us yet, but we've got to tell you about a dog. So let's get to that in Last Licks. All right, guys, talking about Peyton, once again, I appreciate you. Let me talk about her. She is having a splenectomy on Thursday, the 19th. Again, we found a mask on her spleen, and we're going to give her the best chance that we can. We're hopeful that it is benign, but unfortunately, 60% of the time it's malignant,
Starting point is 00:38:19 40% it's benign, but I've got to give her a fighting chance. So this little senior gal is going to, as long as it doesn't rupture prior to that, we're going to try to get it out on Thursday. That's as soon as we could get her in. And we desperately need donations. It's about a $4,000 surgery, but I would sell my, soul to make sure I could save a dog. So if you have it on your heart and on your mind to, you know, shoot us a couple bucks, we greatly appreciate it. It all goes towards giddreysgarden.org.
Starting point is 00:38:45 It all goes towards the dogs. I don't take a salary. Nobody makes any money off of this. I don't have a staff. It's just all for the pups. So I appreciate you very much. And please, if you can't donate money, that's okay. Send some healing thoughts to Peyton. All right. So this was something that our girl, Katie Wu, kind of broke the news on. At least she was the first one that I saw it, with it. I asked the wrong button. I didn't know I had the Kyle Tucker thing in there. Hey, the guy,
Starting point is 00:39:09 Dodger signed Kyle Tucker. All right, go ahead. Oh, you're kidding. Breaking news. Are they really? That's so awesome. That's on me. That's on me.
Starting point is 00:39:18 Hand out. Oh, wow. That's really good. Well, we got to redo this whole show. All right. So Katie Wu, our girl, who was covering the WBC for the athletic, who obviously is her main employer.
Starting point is 00:39:31 She tweeted this out yesterday, I believe it was. that the Los Angeles Dodgers have agreed to a deal with fashion giant unique glow. I don't even know how to say it to become Dodger Stadium's official field presenting partner multiple sources tell the athletic. An official announcement is expected before opening day. Apparently Dodger Stadium's name Clint will remain unchanged. However, that brand will hold the naming rights to the playing field.
Starting point is 00:39:58 So it's probably going to be like Unique Globe field at Dodger Stadium or something like that. that's another promotional opportunity, of course, is the Dodgers top sponsor. So yeah, there's Katie's tweet right there. So I don't know how I feel about this. I understand that it's a business, okay? I get that. But man, seeing the most, the oldest stadium in the National League with a franchise as storied and as historic and as purist to me as the Los Angeles Dodgers,
Starting point is 00:40:29 seeing the name, unless you were going to call it Vince Scully Field at Dodger Stadium. I don't know that I like this. Again, from a business perspective, I understand. And it's all about, I get it. You know, it's, yes, it's about the fan experience. Yes, it's about winning championships. But man, it kind of, to me, cheapens it a little bit. It cheapens our stadium a little bit. What is your takeaway on it? Yeah, I think that's a good way of saying it. It cheapens the stadium. I mean, it enrichens their pockets for sure. We've known this was a possibility for the club for the stadium for a couple of years now, that they were exploring some stadium naming rights. And, you know, it's a catch-22. Yeah, it sucks to have that.
Starting point is 00:41:12 Ultimately, nobody is going to call it whatever Unique Lo Stadium or Field at Dodger Stadium. No, that is Dodger Stadium. That is the home of the Boys of Summer. Well, I guess technically the Boys of Summer or Zebitts Field. But anyways, that's home of our Dodgers. That is Dodger Stadium. It's not going to be unique low field. The same way, like to me, Let's talk brewers. That's always going to be, not Minutemate, that's always going to be, damn it. Millie Park. What a dumbass, huh?
Starting point is 00:41:39 No, I get it, though. The same thing for me. Like, for me, I grew up in Colorado. For me, it will always be Mile High Stadium. I don't care. I don't even care that it's a different building. You know what I mean? Like, the old Mile High was like everything about the South Stands and the Loud and all of the things. And even though they tore down Mile High and it's now parking lot, they tore down Paradise and put it in a
Starting point is 00:42:00 working on. Now the new, the new mile high, I don't know what the hell it's called now. It will always be mile high stadium to me. I don't care. And the same thing with like, now it's American Family Field. It was always Miller Park to you. Minutemade is now Dikeen Park, like all these things. Dodger Stadium. Like to me, it'd be like Riggily, Dodger and Fenway. And Yankee and Yankee. Always have to always have to be that. And Bush Stadium. You know what I mean? Like it always like, I don't know. This is something again. Another one, another one in L.A. Like the house that Kobe built is always going to be Staples Center. I don't care what they decide.
Starting point is 00:42:35 Yeah, they call it. Is it back to Staples Center now or is it? I don't think so. I haven't paid enough attention. I hate L.A. with every fiber of my being. So getting out there like downtown L.A., not the idea, but being in Los Angeles, driving there, the traffic, keep me away, please, for the love of.
Starting point is 00:42:51 As long as we don't start calling stuff like Tampax Field at Dodger Stadium or like, you know, I can't. I can't. On that note, if Unicla wants to be the presenting sponsor of Dodgers Territory. Oh, sure. So here we are yelling. Yeah, listen, I'll take the sponsorship money. But, like, I can deal with our show being called Tampax Dodger territory.
Starting point is 00:43:15 But the stadium, I can't. There's just something. I can't. All right, you guys, Clint and I will be back together on Thursday. Wednesday. I think we're post-gaming. We're doing post-game on Wednesday. but our regular show is on Thursday,
Starting point is 00:43:29 and I will be back tomorrow hosting Fowell Territory for Scott Braun, and then I will be doing postgame for the World Baseball Classic Final between USA and we'll see. Starting point is 00:45:56 tradition hoping to find love the right way and instead I found chaos, comedy and a lot of cringe. Listen to boys and girls on the IHeartRadio app Apple Podcasts or wherever you get your podcast.
