Starting point is 00:00:28 Bell, connection is everything. Hey, this is Hayes Davenport. And Sean Clements. We host the podcast, Hollywood Handbook. Each week, we talk to someone in show business and try to help them with their careers and see what they have to offer us. Everyone has a good time,
Starting point is 00:00:44 and no one gets mad at their publicists for letting them do our show. We've had a lot of great guests like Sarah Sherman, Adam Scott, Danny McBride, Ben Stillard, and a lot of other big shots that wouldn't be where they are without us. Listen to Hollywood Handbook on the IHeartRadio app, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts.
Starting point is 00:01:00 I'm Munga Shatigula, and I'm back with a new season of my podcast. Skyline Drive. This time I talked to scientists, biopunks, kermudgins, blues owners, super seniors, and Goa's top cryotherapy lab to try to understand this obsession with living forever and what it means for all of us. And I get into a bit of trouble along the way. I'd say probably start bone smashing. That doesn't work. To make it look more defined. They say it works. I don't know. Listen to Skyline Drive, How to Live Forever on the IHeart Radio app, Apple Podcasts, or
Starting point is 00:01:29 wherever you get your podcast. You know, they wanted to keep the sixth man through. the regular season and they could do it with their six best starters. And then Roki gets a blister out of nowhere. What is going on, party people? It is a Thursday edition of Dodgers territory. Our pet's heads are staying on. I am Clint Bacios. That is Katie Wu.
Starting point is 00:02:04 We got some things to talk about with you for the next half hour or so. We're going to try to be good today. I'm going to try not to say too much. And I'm already ruining it here at the top by saying way too much stuff. We have a Roki Sasaki issue, a blister issue, and we're going to talk about it in blue balls. So, yeah, we're going to talk about the series so far a little bit later, lost two games of the Brave so far, and, you know, no sooner than we were expecting the starting six-man rotation to be all healthy and the infinity gauntlet to be assembled.
Starting point is 00:02:39 And in this case, like, Stano says, you know, six fingers or whatever. but you lose Roki Sasaki to the injured list with a blister issue. Obviously prompted his exit early in the game yesterday. Pitched into the fourth inning, his worst outing of the second half. Eric Lauer going to take his place and you're not on that screen either. I'm crushing it today. I'm getting a lot of Monday vibes from this show. I will lock it in, I promise.
Starting point is 00:03:11 What are you thinking about this Sasaki? situation where you're at? Um, I have a mixed, a mixed bag of feelings. One, I was so excited when Tyler Glass now came out, took them out on Tuesday. I was like, here it is. The rotation that we've been looking forward to since spring training plus scubel, Dodgers had it all perfectly planned out. You know, they wanted to keep the six man through the regular season and they could do it
Starting point is 00:03:33 with their six best starters. Uh, and then Roki gets a blister out of nowhere, Dave Roberts said. Really wasn't something that, you know, sometimes pitchers, they'll have like a hot spot or or something on one of their fingers. This one, the skin just straight up tore off in the middle of a start. Nice. And so he's going to miss at least two starts. So going on the 15-day IEL.
Starting point is 00:03:51 The good news is that this is not something that's structural damage, right? This isn't a muscle strain or a sprain or anything broken. It's just a blister. So I do think we'll see Roki again in the regular season. And Quinnick, we can get into this. He's had such a stellar second half. I think yesterday was the first time he'd allowed four earned runs in his entire second half. I mean, he'd really figured it out.
Starting point is 00:04:14 and I would have liked to see that continue into September just to grow that foundation, keep that confidence up. But I think we all kind of knew that Rokey's role come October is going to be in the bullpen. The good news is that this injury, all things considered, is once the blister heals, you know, I'm not sure if he'll make any more starts this season or if he'll just go to the bullpen, but this shouldn't impact how the Dodgers are planning to use him in October. Yeah, and that's where I feel.
Starting point is 00:04:37 I feel like I wouldn't say a blessing in disguise, but we knew the role was going to change. We knew his role was going to be shifting that he would be moving to the bullpen. I think you can hang your hat on a fantastic job here in the second half. And again, his worst start came when he had no feel or I guess you could say little feel. He had outchies in his hand for sure while trying to throw a baseball. This is a technical term as well. So if you look at the silver linings of this, there's a reason this team kept Eric Lauer around. You slot him into that starting rotation, back in that starting.
Starting point is 00:05:12 rotation. You get Glasnow back. You're getting Shohei Otani back in short burst spurts over the next a few weeks, possibly. We'll talk about this in a second. Still possibly as early as a Sunday. If not, it could be Tuesday. But yeah, moving him into the bullpen when he comes back. You let Roki rest, recover, get that finger as dialed in as possible, healed up as possible, get the feel back end of the bullpen, potentially by the time he is healthy and ready to. to go in whatever it ends up being two, three weeks. Obviously, sometimes those blisters can be finicky, but I think it's the right move. It could have happened at a worst time.
Starting point is 00:05:53 And Katie, that seems to be a theme we touch on often. Could have been a worst time for something like this to happen. If you're trying to find a silver lining of somebody hitting the IAL, this is a little bit of one there. Yeah, you know, at least it's not happening in October. Again, this is the ramp up time. It's go time. one September hits, but the Dodgers still have that luxury with Glass Now coming back, Shohei coming back, and we'll get to that later in the segment of being able to say, you know,
Starting point is 00:06:19 it's a blister. We think this is under control, and this doesn't impact our plans for October, because we'd always accounted for Roki to kind of be that higher leverage guy. And you're seeing Diaz, we saw that. We don't need to revisit that, please, for everyone's sanity. Tanner Scott, showing some signs showing some signs of being a human, having other options for high leverage spots, because we don't know how Diaz is going to look like when he comes back. That's all important, and that's going to be on the forefront of the Dodgers' mind as they continue to ramp up the rest of their starters to figure out which four are going to be in that postseason rotation. Yeah, let's take a look at the starting rotation for now, at least to end the rest of the regular season.
Starting point is 00:06:56 You got Yamamoto in there. We know we got Otani returning shortly. You just got Glasnow back. You still, you plug Lauer back in. And, of course, you still have Blake Snell, who has been phenomenal. I'll throw, actually I can't throw this graphic up because your face is on it to be weird as I'm talking, so we'll put it up while you're giving some thoughts about it. But is there any update or anything new before we bring in my mystery guest of talking Gavin Stone in a second?
Starting point is 00:07:24 Not talking to, but talking about him. Is there anything new on the show hey return front, or is it still just the same from Dave yesterday, mentioning that it could be, you know, the can could be kicked down the road to Tuesday? So, Shohei's going to throw a bullpen Friday in Detroit. That's a school bull start. You know, we talked about that. Dave Roberts officially confirmed that yesterday. But if you read in between the Dodgers, T leaves, if you will,
Starting point is 00:07:49 Sunday has always been their preferred date to start. Shohei Otani has consistently preferred to throw a bullpen two days before start day. Friday, if my math is correct, is two days before Sunday. And it was the only start this week where they did not have a scheduled starter. Now, you know, there could be a setback. You hope not. But I think they're just trying to cover all their basis. which is why they haven't officially announced Sunday.
Starting point is 00:08:10 It's because Shohei needs to get through that bullpen tomorrow in Detroit. What I thought was interesting, though, Quinn, and we've talked a lot about the ramp up of Shohei. We don't need to rehash that. We all know it's going to be one inning on Sunday, and they'll go from there, is that Dave Roberts said yesterday, Tyler Glassnow is going to be the piggyback option.
Starting point is 00:08:26 And he said that before Eric Lauer had to bail out, you know, a short start from Roki Sasaki. So the plan all along was going to be Glassnow coming in to piggyback Shohey. Now that tandem here is not weird, right? That's probably a soft launch, if you will, of what any piggyback in the postseason rotation is going to look like. But I wondered why Glassnow would go Sunday on regular rest when he's one-star back from a pretty lengthy IL stint.
Starting point is 00:08:52 When the Dodgers have that IL or that scheduled day off on Monday before starting another homestand against St. Louis on Tuesday, that was questionable to me. It's kind of different from how they've operated. Glassnell, we haven't touched on him since he's returned. at least you and I haven't. I like what we saw to him. You know, the first three runs, he kind of got, you know, balls put in play.
Starting point is 00:09:12 Not much you can do about that. And then settled down to get through five. So we saw a little bit of breath, which is to be expected. But then I thought we saw more of the typical glass now. I'm just wondering why he would be the option in piggyback instead of Lauer. Even before Lauer probably unavailable, given what he did, in yesterday's heartbreaking loss. So all things pointing towards Shohei on Sunday, they'll reset the rotation from there Eric Lauer right back in
Starting point is 00:09:38 and it goes to show you know why they had a change apart around the trade deadline to keep this guy and good thing they did because while Justin Robleski's treading back too I think we'll see him soon they've said already that they want Robleski to be used in two to three any instance as a reliever that's also to prepare him for October so I think the big thing that you and I can look at Clint and take away from this is guys are coming back
Starting point is 00:09:58 and getting healthy but a lot of what we're going to see in September are essentially trial runs for how this Dodgers front office wants their roster to look come the postseason starting. Yeah, there's always a plan in place with this front office and, you know, sometimes the baseball gods let them enact their plan a little bit more. Yeah, Glasnow, I think to your questions, obviously a lot of things we could dive into there, to the Show Hey question and why would they piggyback Glasnow? Yes, it makes sense to, you know, potentially prepare those two for what could be their roles in October. But I think this is Shohei kind of leading the charge on this. He's getting
Starting point is 00:10:35 antsy. He wants to get back there and start pitching. And those two days are probably a big deal to show hey. And you have to wonder in the back of his mind, is he thinking about the MVP race to a degree as well? Because we know the PCA noise is getting louder. Maybe it's quiet down a little bit here and there. But still, show hey, show hey, he wants to get on the bump and the sooner he can do it, the sooner he can start building up from that. What are your thoughts on kind of that factor? Him being the one who is saying, you know, I'm the captain now. No, you're spot on. And that's kind of what this is, right? But I think there's a big difference when you look at the month of September from Shoah coming back on Sunday versus
Starting point is 00:11:16 coming back on Tuesday. If he comes back Sunday, that ensures him five starts, not four before the postseason. And that matters both for Shoah, who, of course, is looking at the MVP and PCA right now, if voting ended today, I think would be the front runner to win. But we've talked about it. We've heard pundits talk about it all on different media. The only one, way this becomes a real tight race again is if Otani comes back to the mound and we're going to see that. So Shohei's thinking, hey, one more start can get me back on that MVP conversation. There's a big difference for making four starts and five, especially when you're a team trying to ramp up Shohei so that he could be a full-fledged starter come October. Because if you're giving him five starts, you can get him to five innings.
Starting point is 00:11:57 And if you have Shoah Otani, five innings 75 pitch threshold at the end of September, then he's a legitimate starting option for your squad. in October, not just a two, three- inning piggyback guy, then here comes Tyler Glass now. So a lot of part here, but I agree. It's show his decision. He's going to pitch on Sunday, and I think we will see that, assuming he comes out of this bullpen, ready to go. Another factor to throw in here, another name. I already mentioned. Gavin Stone, this is me in looking down the road machine, honestly, probably one more week. I think they would like to get him one more start. Gavin Stone has been quietly shutting me up. I was very concerned.
Starting point is 00:12:36 It was very much expecting that Stoner was going to probably have to undergo another season-ending shoulder surgery. But all of a sudden, he's just been absolutely crushing it at AAA, made his fourth appearance yesterday in totality. Two earned runs over
Starting point is 00:12:52 11 and 2 thirds innings. 18 strikeouts over that stretch against one walk for Stoner. For the people who don't recall, How good this dude was in 2024. Made 24 starts for that team before the shoulder gave on him at just the worst possible time heading into the postseason. But he had a 3, 33 ERA over those first 24 starts.
Starting point is 00:13:15 And then I think it was the final start. So it was 25th start. It allows the five runs. Obviously something was a little bit wrong. And he has now missed nearly two years. This final start at the big league level was August 31st of 2024. It is August 27. 2026. This is the guy that Katie, to me, looks like he is ready to come back. He is ready to
Starting point is 00:13:40 announce himself. Obviously, probably not a factor for the postseason pitching plans. But if I'm Gavin Stone, I want to end the season back at the big league level, knowing I made it back, I'm healthy. Yeah, he'll be with the team during the postseason. Maybe, you know, still be throwing pitching to guys in between series and all this kind of stuff. But knowing that at the end of the season, while they're hoisting a trophy, I can shut it down and plan on being fully healthy and rested in having a normal offseason heading into spring training. So could Gavin Stone enter the equation maybe as early as next week?
Starting point is 00:14:22 He was built up to, I forget how many pitches, but four innings. I mean, the next start, five innings seems to make sense. Could he be somebody that is on the radar to return? I want to see Gavin Stone as much as anyone. Remember, Andrew Friedman said in spring training, it was him and River Ryan, the pitchers that he was most excited to see. But I think the Dodgers are going to take an approach
Starting point is 00:14:42 similar to how they did with River Ryan, given Gavin Stone's extensive injury. I mean, Clint, you nailed it there. It's been two years since this guy's pitched in the big leagues. And when you have a pitcher coming back from shoulder surgery, you want to be careful. And the last thing that you want to do if you're the Dodgers is rush him back and get into those five innings.
Starting point is 00:14:58 And yes, he's looked really, really good in AAA. And there are lots of things to be excited about when it comes to Gavin Stone. But you're not going to rush him back unless you really need him to. And the really needed role, Eric Lauer has taken that. When you need a spot starter, that's Eric Lauer's job. So I want to see Gavin Stone. I don't think he's someone that we see soon, like certainly not in the next week or so. I think they're going to want to see him repeat a couple of these five-inning starts and really make sure he's good to go.
Starting point is 00:15:23 Is it a not a 0% chance he comes up as a, you know, roster span on September 1st? Do they have an extra spot to play around with? maybe, but I think I'm going to throw a less exciting name, but could be really important for this postseason at you, Clint. I actually think we should be looking at Chris Bubich, who it should throw against live hitters this weekend and then could possibly start a rehab assignment as early as next week. And we'll see that the whole reason the Dodgers traded for Chris Bubich,
Starting point is 00:15:51 which was a name that really no one saw coming, was because they thought that maybe he could help their bullpen come October. If you're starting a rehab assignment on September 1st, to me, that shows every signal that the Dodgers want to give him the best possible chance of at least having an opportunity to crack that bullpen. So we're looking at Gavin Stone for the future, but we're looking at Chris Bubich right now for the immediate impact. Yeah, name kind of you forget about the final piece of the trade deadline puzzle. People are like, this dude's hurt. But, hey, 2025 All-Star has looked really good. And if he's somebody who is in some sort of swingman role, it makes some sense.
Starting point is 00:16:26 Hey, the good thing is, here we are a couple days away from the start of September, and you have options. This team having options feels a lot better than a lot of us recall heading into the 2024 postseason where it was like, pray, put some prayer on it. Let's hope they find a way to sort it all out, and they did. But good names there, good conversation. We'll continue the conversation about the series. Obviously, a lot of people upset about the way the series has shaken out so far. We'll do that right after a quick break. One of the things that I wasn't very good at,
Starting point is 00:17:02 well, it's playing Major League Baseball. One of the things that I'm really good at is sweating. Even now when I'm not playing, I need hydration. I need to make sure it's convenient. That's why I choose quints. Yep, quince electrolyte stick packs to the rescue crats. They taste great, and the zero sugar options are stevia-free. I guess less of a series preview, more of a game preview tonight. Your Dodgers play the Braves for the series finale. The season series finale, hell of a matchup. We got Yamamoto. We got Chris Sale.
Starting point is 00:18:46 I'm sure Dodgers fans are not happy to see Chris Sale on the other side of facing them. But just talk about this before we talk about the series as a whole, which has been a disappointment. Just as a baseball fan, as somebody who covers this for a living, how fun is it to see Yama v. Sale? I mean, if I was a fan, a baseball enthusiast, I would love this just for the pitcher's matchup.
Starting point is 00:19:16 This is a real Aces showdown. If I'm a Dodgers fan, though, that's completely overshadowed by the fact that this is all of a sudden a must-win game. And you guys know me on the show. I'm the even keeled. Everything's going to be fine. No, you've got to win this game.
Starting point is 00:19:26 You can't drop the series to the Brewers, and then you can't go into Atlanta, up four games, and all of a sudden leave with just a one-run lead in this National League wildoff or National League playoff picture. Not when all season long you have stated as the Dodgers that the first round by is important. It's been it's been two tough losses, especially yesterday. I don't really think anyone had Hayson Kim and his 066 batting average walking off for the Braves. But it's been two heartbreakers. I don't think the Dodgers have played nearly they're close to their best ball. We're seeing a lot of, you know, what we talked about all the good things they did last week, we're kind of regressing back to the things that they were doing against the Brewers.
Starting point is 00:20:03 So we love a Yamma start day. Chris Hales having a heck of a season. It's going to be a great pitching matchup, our pal, AJ Prisinski, on the call for Fox. So lots of things trending in the right direction. But bottom line, Dodgers have to win this game. Yeah, yeah, I was going to ask, is this one of those must-win games? And absolutely, just back to playing not very clean, a very clean brand of baseball. all this from one of my favorites, Bill Plunkett, just a lot of things they need to keep getting better at.
Starting point is 00:20:32 And that's what I saw. I saw somebody also in the chat here upset with me about our post game on All Dodgers last night. We, listen, there's 162 games. I'm not going to be upset about every single game, every single loss, not, you know, I know the team needs to be playing better. But also, it is, it was August 26th, and it wasn't an out-of-now-where thing. They have been playing pretty poorly for a good stretch,
Starting point is 00:20:59 and then they were able to rattle off a six-game winning streak against a pair of not-so-good teams with the Rockies and the Pirates. The good thing is we know Will Smith returns this weekend, or is it this weekend on the first? At least that's the expectation, you're getting an All-Star back. You're getting somebody who can hit high in your lineup back. Somebody maybe three, four, or five, whatever it may be. somebody who has just a perfect even keel pulse to drive in runs.
Starting point is 00:21:30 And also, I mean, just it's the right time to get somebody, another adult in that lineup where Teo has struggled and giveth and take it the way and all that kind of stuff. Kyle Tucker forgot he's on the road right now. But I need to see him clean it up, Katie. I think we all need to see him clean it up here just consistency. And I know Dave is frustrated. We're probably, they lose this series.
Starting point is 00:21:53 We're going to see some more salty Dave, which is always fun, if I'm being honest. But usually it comes at the expense of the team playing poorly. Do it for Dave. Do it for Dave, everybody. Yeah, because look, we can joke around and say, you know, well, they're the Dodgers. They're going to be in it. They have a really easy strength of schedule in September. True.
Starting point is 00:22:12 But what they've done in dropping the series or the season series, excuse me, to both the Brewers and the Braves now, is they've taken some of the control out of their hands. The Braves and the Brewers are very good teams, and they have shown. shown in the second half, in my opinion, in the small sample size we've seen of them, to be more fundamentally sound than the Dodgers have played. And the Dodgers in the first half were, in my opinion, one of the top fundamentally sound baseball teams in all of MLB. So now you're the Dodgers, you know, you can't take that risk of not getting the first round by. And the argument that we hear all the time is, well, they won the World Series last
Starting point is 00:22:44 year and they played the, they played the first round. This is a different. It's a different roster. It's an older roster. We've seen guys look gas. You've seen them look tired. I, it's go time for the Dodgers. They can't keep doing this, you know, back and forth. Some days we're on, some days were off, sometimes we're taking it, bats on and off. That happens over the course of a 162 game season. But as Max Muncie said on the show last week, you know, the little things, the base running, the commitment to defense, they were slacking on that. And it's time to pick it up. It's been a disappointing series in Atlanta so far. They had a chance to make a statement after their sixth game winning streak at home, and they fell far short point.
Starting point is 00:23:18 Yeah, yeah. Clean it up. What's all you got to do there? And, of course, you guys can watch the game tonight. Huge game, huge matchup, marquee matchup, like I said, Yamamoto versus Sale. MLB on Fox is streaming on Fox 1. The race to October starts now, and they have your front row seat to the wildest walkoff. Walkoffs, lights out pitching and clutch plays all season long. And, of course, all postseason wrong. You can't miss matchup as teams battle for a spot in the playoffs.
Starting point is 00:23:49 Then stream the 26 World Series live on Fox 1. At home or on the go, live or on demand, never miss a moment. Stream now. We do have another quick break. Then we'll be back with a dog and then some final thoughts and a few comments. Stay tuned. Bella. Bella.

Starting point is 00:25:36 Bell, connection is everything. Gonna go ahead and feature Frankie here again for Alana, who will be back with us on Monday. But Frankie needs an adopter. You know this. Frankie is a three-year-old Chihuahua Poodleman. mix, according to Alana, from what I've seen today, according to sources, not much of a shedder. Also, a big-time cuddler looks like a good boy. And Katie, you said you're trying to get somebody.
Starting point is 00:26:10 You're trying to get your dad to adopt this dog? Anyone. But yes, I did try to get my dad to adopt Frankie. But anyone, look at his face. A good boy. You have to. Yeah. If you guys can't adopt or take care of Frankie, there's other dogs, part of Gidriegarden.

Help the dogs do it for Riz. All right, a few things before we do get out of here. We got a $5 super chat from Nancy earlier in the show saying
Starting point is 00:26:44 it's part of the Roki Sasaki Band-Aid fund and we appreciate that. You've got to have... Get him some moleskin. That's it. Just wrap it up. Do... I'm it's been. been a while. It was like 2016 with the Dodgers traded for Rich Hill. Did you remember any of the
Starting point is 00:27:00 lore of Rich Hill and his blister issue? I don't think so. It was a fun time and I think I saw a few people mentioning Rich Hill's blister in the chat. They tried everything. They ended up going with the rodeo cream or something like that, but I think they were talking about putting apple cider vinegar on it. I think they had somebody pee on his hand to try to help this blister. it was an interesting time but anyways a band-aid probably won't do very much unless it is a Flintstone's band-aid
Starting point is 00:27:33 but that's it talking about peeing on hands and also you had pointed this one out during the chat LP talking about it's not a confidence cactus right now it is a prayer pyramid when we were talking to talking about the bullpen and we might be getting another guy back question mark Blake Trinin
Starting point is 00:27:48 having himself a pretty decent rehab stint here Dave Vassay mentioned he made us a fifth rehab appearance this month and hasn't allowed to run 8Ks to one walk. Is this a guy that could kind of sneak back up on us once again, as he's done so often for Dave and this team, that can kind of sneak back into the bullpen slash, you know, postseason picture? Yeah, I talked about this in my recent mailback for the athletic on how we're looking at the
Starting point is 00:28:17 bullpen and how it could shape up. The left side, we know the three that are going to be in there along with Robleski. the same guys that they relied on all season. And Scott, Bessia, Jack Dreyer. The right-hand side, though, that's a little trickier to figure out. We know Diaz is going to, we think, be a part of that. It's an independent of September looks. Roke, you will be in there.
Starting point is 00:28:35 And I think you are going through any of your healthy versions of Brock Stewart, Evan Phillips, who's trending in a more positive direction as of late. And then Blake Trident, we can't rule him out either, mainly because we know how much Dave Roberts values his players that have been there in the moment for the postseason. If Blake Trinin, whether or not you like him in the regular season, has been in it in the postseason. You think about the NLCS when Roki struggles. Dave puts in a struggling Blake Trinan last year too. And the reason he does that is because if Rokey blows that game, I'm not sure that Rokey has the confidence to bounce back and still be usable in the rest of that championship series.
Starting point is 00:29:12 Blake Trinan goes in and blows that game. He has a short memory. He's done it before. He's a veteran. He's usable. He can get right back in it the next day. Now we all know Trinin did not blow that game. he came in and got out of it.
Starting point is 00:29:23 But that experience, that veteran poise, that matters when looking at how to construct a bullpen. So I think Blake Trinan absolutely in the mix to be back soon and then back in that postseason bullpen. Yeah, I know some people, I'm already seeing it in the chat. There are a hard no on Blake Trinan, but there is something to the been there, done that. There is something to the postseason poise. There is something to him kind of giving his arm, his shoulder in that 2024 postseason. we could all recall Dave going out there. I think it was during the World Series or I don't know.
Starting point is 00:29:56 I'm one of those guys. I forget the important things, but Dave kind of putting his hand on his chest being like, are you good? Do you got this? You know, Trinan might still have some good innings in that shoulder. A few more good innings. Get him that third consecutive ring here and let them, you know, sail off into the sunset and style. Again, it's another option.
Starting point is 00:30:19 That's what we're looking for. here. Options. If he comes back and can prove himself over eight appearances, six appearances in September, take all the healthy arms we can get.
