Hello and welcome to doomed to fail. We are a history podcast and we talk about crazy things
happened in our past and we are slowly knitting together a idea of what happened and how we got
to where we are. And I am Taylor and along with my co-host Fars. We record every week and have a new
episode for you, but since they are so varied and we talk about so many different topics, I'm also
going to tell you about them kind of topic by topic. So today I'm going to tell you a couple
episodes that we have and we have over 200 about businesses and like business failures and
business disasters. So we'll start and I'll have a link to each of these individual episodes in
the show notes. Episode 27 was on the Ford Edsel, which was a car that just like could not have
flopped more. And I also on that episode talk about Henry Ford and how he,
He wrote a book about Jewish people that Hitler really liked.
So just a reminder that please don't quote Henry Ford in your business, like, presentations.
I've seen so many people do this, and I'm like, no, no, no, no, no, find someone else.
That man is a Nazi.
So there's that.
Episode 33 is about Charles Ponzi, who invented, I guess, the Ponzi scheme.
You can learn about the first time he did it and sort of how he got people to invest money with this promise of a return when there really was nothing happening.
Like the, like Bernie Madoff now, but the first one that we know about, that is saved after.
Episode 112 was about the juicero juicer.
I don't know if you remember this, but it was like a $400 machine, and it came with these juice packets,
and then you would, like, put the packet in and you get fancy juice.
No one actually had them, but, like, rich people would have them, maybe.
And then someone did a study, and you could just squeeze the juice bags.
Like, you didn't need the machine, and it all kind of came tumbling down.
Then, Faris did a three-part series on PayPal, specifically the PayPal Mafia.
So these are where people like Peter Thiel and Elon Musk, it's the first time you heard those guys' names when they, you know, came together and created PayPal.
So there's three parts to that, cash checker COD, Titans of Tech, and then Revenge, episodes 128, 131, and 133.
Then, Forrest talks about in episode 137, this dude called Edwin Rist, and I put this into business because it actually,
makes no sense to me. So he did this like very elaborate scheme to steal like fishing flies,
like the flies that are like the things that you tie. And he had a business about it,
but he also was stealing them and selling them and reselling them. So super interesting.
Episode 193, we talk about the rise of Enzo Ferrari and his sports cars. And 199, which is like
almost our 200th episode, obviously. I talk about Enron, which is my favorite story. If you haven't
seen smartest guys in the room.
The documentary, please do that or read the book.
It's so interesting.
So the rise and fall of Enron.
And then episode 210.
This one I talked about in engineering disasters as well, but it is about Action
Park, New Jersey.
It's a recent one that I did.
But I do think it is a very good business case for things like, why wasn't this
really dangerous place insured?
Well, it wasn't because they made up an insurer, like literally made one up, things
like that are just wild that you do illegally.
in the business world and no one wanted to jail for that so um yes so that's i don't know 10 11 12 episodes
on business check them out it'll be all in the show notes and we hope that you enjoy if you have
any questions concerns ideas email us doomed to fill a pod at gmail.com and please tell your friends thanks
