Starting point is 00:00:00 Doug hates candy rappers screaming maybe sticky seeds with 50 acid pop or kernels in his teeth. There's still not one that he won't see because Doug. Hey, hey, hey, everybody. My name is Doug and I love movies. This is Doug loves movies. Don't forget we are coming to the loft at City Winery in New York City this Monday, September 7th at 730. but today's show is being recorded on September 2nd, 2026.
Starting point is 00:00:36 And my guests are Alex Castain and Lisa Trager. Hello. Yay, thank you. Now, regular listeners might be going, oh, that's only two guests. Who's the third guest? Well, that's a great question. I had somebody booked. They were a no-show.
Starting point is 00:00:58 I hope that they're doing okay. But I also, it was very last minute that we discovered that this person was a no-show. So I reached out to one other person who might show up. But in the meantime, let's go ahead and dispense with all the stuff that happens before we play the games. Let's meet the two guests that are here individually, alphabetically by first name. He is a comedian I met recently when we did comics unleashed together. It's Alex Cascade. Hey, Alex.
Starting point is 00:01:37 It's a pleasure, dude. Thanks for having me. It's great to see you back with the leash on. It was scary over in L.A. Just both of us completely unleashed like that. It's just comics should never be unleashed. That is just like rule one. And yet they did it.
Starting point is 00:01:54 It is so funny because the show is like super leashed up, right? It's solely. Oh. But also, no, it's strangely, like, it's less leashed than it used to be, if that makes sense. Because it shows, you know, 20 years old. When the format first started was like 20 years ago, then it went away for a while, then it came back briefly. And then all of those episodes have just been playing in syndication.
Starting point is 00:02:17 So now they're finally now last year and now this year, they're adding new episodes to the mix. And now, believe it or not, Byron Allen, like, participates more. Like, I don't know how much of it makes it to air because they edit it, but he, in the room, he like, like, when you watch the TV show, somebody even recently, what's his name, Triumph, the Wonder, the Insult Comic Dog, he, his, the person who is his hand, Robert Smigel, recently just posted, this guy's brilliant. And it was just everything that Byron said in one episode in a super, super cut. There was only, you know, like a minute or too long. But it just showed that in the 20, 22
Starting point is 00:03:04 minute episode, he only speaks for about two minutes of it. He's the host. Right. And that's the key to a billion dollars. They used, yeah, they used the old clip. They used it, it was from the way the show used to be. Because now, as Alex and I experienced it, he loves to actually jump in and goof around and mostly like make fun of what we're saying even though this show has already approved everything we're going to say yes yeah yeah he likes to go so i hear you ride the bus i go yeah i ride the bus he goes what the hell is wrong with you i go oh sorry sorry about that yeah and i got a i got a i was referred to as a Caucasian at one point that was a compliment Right. Lawsuit impending. Yeah. Yeah. He really did. He was doing like just the kind of call and response crowd work that kills of just like reading what you said back to you in a funny voice and you're like, I feel like an idiot, but I don't know why.
Starting point is 00:04:06 No, he really was like roasting us a little bit. And especially the woman next to me, he really liked going back. Well, everybody. I think by the end of it, he had pretty much roasted everybody for one reason. rather, but who knows what makes it to air. Right. But he comes up with those questions that he asks us to get into our bits. Like my favorite was, Teddy said to me, I hear you've been talking about expressions. Like it's a question that's never been asked before. People are talking about, oh, Doug Benson's up there talking about expressions.
Starting point is 00:04:46 That's what everyone says about you. I guess so. A pot head who won't stop. You'd be expression guy. Yeah. How are you with movie trivia, Alex? I'm pretty good, but I went back and I listened to some recent episodes of yours, and you're definitely the major leagues.
Starting point is 00:05:05 I was blown away. I'm like interested in seeing how this goes, because I'm definitely a big movie guy, so we'll see how it goes, but I think I'm punching by my week class right now. Well, you know, I really want you and Brett Goldstein to go ahead. ahead. In what? In movies. Movies.
Starting point is 00:05:24 What else? In a fight. In mod wrestling. Well, I'm the host, and he hosts a show too, but I guess we could have some sort of. No, it would be, I would, it would be for charity. Okay. And it would just be, it would be Jeopardy style, all movies. I would pick everything and see who is, because both of you.
Starting point is 00:05:48 You've seen it all. You've seen it fucking all. It's really crazy. I just want to, I want to watch. He seems too busy these days to be all caught up, though. Yeah, having sex with J-Lo. No, he's watching it all. Like, I was mentioning like head over heels with Freddie Prince Jr.
Starting point is 00:06:03 And Monica Potter. And he's like, oh, of course. I'm like, oh, my God. Like, I just don't know. And he can't say no to charity. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. No, that's true. Yeah, no, he won't be busy if we tell him it's for charity.
Starting point is 00:06:18 He's here right now. I saw him at New York doing a bar show. I'll find him. Did you do, you haven't done his podcast? Oh, I sure did. I think I was the most prepared guest he'd ever had. And then he was, yeah, he was thankful for my effort. I love doing it.
Starting point is 00:06:34 It was really quite an exercise because there's a lot of questions you have to figure out your answers to before you go on there. On this show, I don't expect anybody to have anything prepared except for maybe you know, a movie recommendation. But let's introduce you formally. She may or may not have been on comics only. You didn't do it, right?
Starting point is 00:06:58 No, they've never asked. Okay, but if you ask them, they'd say yes, I think. I just think it's a, you know, there's a disconnect there. But if you wanted to do it, I'm sure that you could. Yeah. But everybody knows you from survival of the thickest, among other things. It's Lisa Trager. Hello.
Starting point is 00:07:19 Hello, thrilled to be here. I'm actually soaring. It was hard not to mention it before we started recording because Jacob Tierney, you know, showrunner, writer-director of Heated Rivalry, I'm like in bed and I get a mess, a DM going. He's at Brooklyn Paramount in October. Get on the site as fast as I can. I buy the single last ticket available.
Starting point is 00:07:41 Wow. That's never happened before. Like I searched for two, not available. Search for one. one thing showed up and then I got it and then when I went back to see, no more tickets available. Wow.
Starting point is 00:07:52 Can you believe it? I really pays to do things alone sometimes. Yeah, you're right. That's a great, yeah. I'll make friends there, though. Yeah, I bet you will. You came to play today and in response to what Alex said earlier
Starting point is 00:08:09 about this being difficult, that's sort of the premise of the show now is that it's fun to see if someone can get lucky when asked difficult questions. Yeah, listen, I never come here with too much of a competitive spirit because I know I'm going to get in last place and, you know, it is what it is. You're going to be like, I don't, you know, it'll be like a game about some actor that you don't like or pay attention to you. Yeah, it's like, I know what I know and I don't know what I don't know.
Starting point is 00:08:37 And like I play movie grid and Cinematrix every single day. And if I see a name, I don't know, I go, are you not Rebecca Ferguson again? Like, I can't remember. I can't remember. Enough, Miss Ferguson. Get the hell out of here. Yeah, Mix, Mick Maitelson, whatever that. Like, there's just some people I can't learn.
Starting point is 00:08:53 I can't learn it. Another round is good, though. Oh, yeah, that's really good. Yeah, I don't know what we're talking about. That's what I mean. It's like, I can only know what I know. And it's mostly things from the mid-90s, to 2005.
Starting point is 00:09:09 Well, I dare say if Madd's Mickelson is in it, you're in for a ride. He's always in pretty interesting movies. he's uh he makes uh strong choices i think yeah he's like a boy actor you know there's like some things for boys and some for girls and he's a boy guy yeah like i could see that i'm trying of like if there's something that he was in that women would be into i mean yeah i'm gonna give up on this uh this line of questioning because i i think you're probably right he it makes movies that are rough in one way or another. Like there's one,
Starting point is 00:09:49 I can't think of the title, but he was like, you know, accused of being a child must or something to the whole movie. You're like, is he? Well, now I'm in. Okay.
Starting point is 00:09:59 But before we play some games today, and I continue to stall, hoping for our third guest to show up, let's talk about this year at the movies. Alex, do you have, a favorite movie that you've seen in this calendar year, 26 year of our Lord.
Starting point is 00:10:20 That came out in 2026. Right now, I feel like I'm leaning towards the invite really got me. I saw it with a great theater crowd, so everything was like getting big pops, which makes it a lot more fun. I loved Ed Norton and Rogan's performance in that. Right now it's the invite,
Starting point is 00:10:40 I got to say. Everybody's talking about Oscar nominations for three of the actors and not Seth. And I just don't, I feel like it's like, oh, sure, you could say he's always like that character. But it's the time where it's the most perfect for him to be that character. Like, he's so good in it. Right. They might be punishing him for smoking weed. This might be them trying to get him to get straight.
Starting point is 00:11:06 But yeah, he's great in that. It doesn't stand out as like, oh, he's just being himself. Like it works perfectly in like the husband-wife dynamic of like what she's frustrated by and like his sort of lack of ambition. I thought it was great. And then people were talking about, I mean, I loved obsession too. We'll see if the horror can finally get like a best picture or best actress. That would be pretty fun. But those are probably my top two right now.
Starting point is 00:11:32 Yeah. Those are both, you know, excellent movies that I, you know, I do think are going to be part of the Oscar conversation. Even though obsession is, you know, very violent, it's kind of a palatable violence, you know? Like if the academy can handle the substance, I think they can handle obsession. You know, it's not as gross or violent as that movie was. Totally. And she was just undeniable in it. So we'll see.
Starting point is 00:12:01 But she's definitely behind the eight ball just in terms of the content. Yeah. Well, I always go back to Tony Collette, not getting nominated. for hereditary it seems like a similar sort of situation where it just comes down to if the movie's too intense for the, you know,
Starting point is 00:12:21 general academy membership. But then Francis McDormon got for Nomadland, which was way scarier than Hereditary, the idea of working for Amazon and living in a trailer. That's, I'd rather be an hereditary. That's a very good point. I was more scared by Nomadland.
Starting point is 00:12:40 All right, Lisa, do you have a favorite movie this year? Well, this is a nightmare for me. I was going to talk about the invite. And I was also... We can talk some more about the invite. Is that your favorite this year, you think? It is. And, like, I also, I mean, I loved it so much.
Starting point is 00:12:58 I also love that after, like, the Don't worry, darling, like, Olivia Wilde, like, Smear campaign, she's back being like, I'm amazing. Go, go fuck yourselves. I love that they filmed in order. but I also, I wanted to comment on like the audience thing, because I have a lot of issues in terms of people not behaving. I usually go to movies alone.
Starting point is 00:13:21 I have such unruly friends. They're checking their phones. I've gotten into multiple fights at off Broadway and Broadway shows this year. People are done behaving. And what I've learned is I'm just going to go to the weirdo theaters because I saw it's Cinema Village. Was the sound off, yes. Was the screen tiny?
Starting point is 00:13:38 absolutely. But everyone was behaved and I was like, this is it. I have to go, I got to stick to the little weird theaters. I can't be at an AMC. You know what I mean? I just. Yeah. You're 100% right. Or like, you know, that's one thing I like about it, AMC, is the seat chart because like I can just eyeball it and go, oh, that's not for me. You know, because I want to, I only want to go if I could sit somewhere where I'm not close to anyone. Well, and that's what I do. Like, sometimes I'll go to, like, really off-peak hours, and then, because if people are misbehaving, I can move. Like, I just am done fighting. And I was recently out of a friend's show, and I was like, I got, it got really volatile
Starting point is 00:14:22 with the people in front of me, because they wouldn't stop talking. And she yelled, she turned around. She's like, what the fuck is your problem? And then it was her aunt and cousins, and we were the only ones left to meet her after the show. And so the family I thought with, I did have to stand in an empty theater house with. But so, yeah, I just loved Cinema Village. I loved the acting. I loved, I was laughing a lot. I loved little moments.
Starting point is 00:14:45 I like slice of life, all one location, all one day. I know these people. I know Seth Rowe. I know that guy. Like, I love the idea of like your parents were richer than you, so you're unable to enjoy the life you have right now. Like, I just loved it. I love that Penelope Cruz wasn't eating any of the meat and dairy.
Starting point is 00:15:04 Like, I just, I loved all of it so much. And, yeah, I'm sending one of my couple friends to go see it that are having problems to see if I could move things along with them. Oh, because it'll help break them up is what you're saying? I don't know what it'll do, but I'm sure it'll be a tense conversation after. It'll move the needle. Somewhere. Yeah. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:15:29 Because I've also been with discussions. I was hanging out with people yesterday. and like a lot of got like it's split on what people think the end is and that's really curious because I thought we were all on the same page and I was talking to people that totally read the ending difference so I also like a movie with that kind of and you know people can interpret well yeah maybe but you know now I want to know what this interpretation was because I felt like it was fairly clear what happened at the end but we obviously can't talk It's just the opposite. Whatever you think it is, there's other people that think the opposite. It's the opposite. And that's that. So, like, I don't know if we're on the same page or not, but, like, that is, that's the, that's the vibe.
Starting point is 00:16:16 All right. But I did, I do want to say something, since this is a movie podcast, I had never seen my cousin Vinnie. And I watched it for the first time last week. Well, so that was going to be my next question. I wanted each of you. Oh, my bad. No, it's okay. I wanted you to recommend a movie that's not necessarily from this year.
Starting point is 00:16:41 And so did you like my cousin Vinnie? I mean, I understand why it's a beloved classic. I'll tell you that much. I mean, yeah, I loved it. It was awesome. But I would say I was in the Hamptons this weekend, and I don't know how I finangled this, but we all watched Gone Girl Friday night or like Saturday night.
Starting point is 00:16:59 I was like, I can't believe I got everyone to watch this, like, dark, slow movie. That's two and a half hours long, but it was awesome. That movie's, you know, it's, it is dark and slow, but it's also, it's fun. I love it. I love it. I watch it all the time, so it's one of my go-toes, all of Fincher stuff. But yeah, I think my cousin Vinnie, Gone Girl, so fun. Okay. Oh, I'm in a movie coming out this fall called The Regulars. It's a horror movie, horror comedy filmed in Brooklyn, so that's coming out, like, this month or next month. I don't know, independent movies aren't real, but it's coming out.
Starting point is 00:17:32 Okay. What's it called again? The regulars? The regulars, yeah. It's like a bar on a Halloween night and someone is murdered and it's like who did it. Right. It could have been one of the regulars. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:17:49 There's suspects. That sounds awesome. And but with regard to my cousin Vinny, isn't it, crazy how much there's just been ever since Marisa Tomei won the Oscar, there's so much talk about how that it, that something went, they did a miscount or something and that she didn't really win. Well, I looked at all the nominations and stuff and it's like,
Starting point is 00:18:15 I see what they were doing. She's incredible. I just think it's weird that he wasn't also nominated because like when he's like in the mud trying to get back up, I'm like, that's an actor. Like, that was incredible. Like, I just, I loved it. Because He also, like, they come into this town and they don't shit on the town. Like, it could have been so outdated and, like, weird to watch, but it's so smart and fun. And I didn't know the karate kid had, like, a bigger career. So that was exciting to see him.
Starting point is 00:18:40 Oh, yeah, Ralph Vachio is time. Mr. Ralph. Ralph. Yeah. My grandparents are friends with Marissa Tomey's parents. I'm not bragging. It hasn't helped my career at all. But they were at the Tomey's house during the Oscar night. And there was no press or paparazzi or anything because nobody thought she was going to win.
Starting point is 00:18:59 And then within like 45 minutes of them announcing, the press was like banging on their door trying to get a statement from her parents. But like literally nobody thought she was going to win. But it was such a good performance. She was up against like four British actresses and dramas. Like, you know, I think they just split. The vote just got split so crazy that she just came out on top, you know. Oh, that's a good point. Now deservedly so, I feel like, because the movie not only is a classic, but she's just great in it.
Starting point is 00:19:28 Like, she does a great job. What's your, what would you like to recommend, Alex, from any, any other year, but now? Well, this is a nightmare for me because I was going to recommend my cousin Vinnie. But I'm going to do, uh, 1984, Bertie, Nick Cage, uh, and Mr. Modine. Yeah, Matthew Modine. Matthew Modine. And I wasn't going to wreck this. And then everyone I talked to has never heard about this.
Starting point is 00:19:57 It's like a super early Nick Cage movie. It's like Vietnam War PTSD thing. And Modine wants to be like a bird. And it's like a beautiful movie with an amazing ending. And no one's seen it. So I'm like, I got to wreck this. So that way there's other people out there that can, you know, understand or, you know, experience. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:20:19 No, it's got all the Nicholas Cage stuff that he normally does. You know, he like rages a few times. and is a fun character and yeah and Matthew Modine and it was I think it was directed by Alan Parker who did a lot of
Starting point is 00:20:39 edgy stuff like Midnight Express and of course Bugsy Malone. So yeah it kind of was one of those movies that got some attention at the time it came out but I think people have forgotten about it so I think that's a strong recommendation
Starting point is 00:20:55 totally which is a perfect metaphor for vietnam yes yes especially today and my Vietnam is a packed AMC theater theater etiquette is out the window something needs to be done
Starting point is 00:21:15 there needs to be like a marshal in every room like on an airplane that stands up and deals with these people yeah well that's also like what sucks about Broadway and off-Broadway too, but Broadway specifically is the front-of-house people like disappear during the show. Like they do not, like they should be like watching the crowd and taking, you know, taking people's comments if somebody comes back and says, hey, these people won't shut up or whatever, you know, but they don't. They just, they just disappear. They
Starting point is 00:21:46 just wait until the, you know, intermission and then reappear. And it's, that's an annoying aspect of it to me. Right. But we're not here to talk about that. We're here to play some games. It's going to be head to head, apparently, because the other two folks that we were hoping would pop in are not going to or haven't anyway.
Starting point is 00:22:09 So we're going to take a break, and when we come back, we're going to play some games. We'll be right back. Today's show is brought to you in part by Hymns. Starting point is 00:25:42 Our first game is a new favorite of mine. Let me just glance at it really quick here and make sure if it's even possible to play it with two people, yes, I think we can do this. All right. The game is called Count me if you can. And here's how it works.
Starting point is 00:26:04 I'll name a movie. You have to guess how many credited performers are in that film. Like how many performances are credited, be it by humans or other things. The first person they miss,
Starting point is 00:26:21 The second person gets a chance at it. If nobody gets it, then we move on to the next one with no points. And you're telling me, we're guessing how many names are in the credits in the end of the movie? Essentially, yes. How many performances are given credit? Because like these days, when you go on IMDB, lots of movies, they'll say so-and-so, uncredited, blah, blah, uncredited. So those would be like cameos and voiceovers and just for weird reason, somebody doesn't get a credit. or somebody goes back in later
Starting point is 00:26:52 like somebody becomes more known that was an extra in a movie so they'll throw that on there and say but then add uncredited but it's essentially the idea here is this idea for this game came about when I was thinking about movies
Starting point is 00:27:08 with very small casts but also that there's movies that feel like they should have a very small cast and then don't like the invite is a perfect example because when all is said and done there's only four credited actors in that movie, correct? I don't know.
Starting point is 00:27:24 Do they credit the musicians at the... Well, oh, that's a good point. Do they speak? Yeah, the one asks if he was listening or whatever. Yeah, so see, this is a good example of, so the ultimate number might be more like, even though it's about four people, the ultimate number might be eight or nine or ten.
Starting point is 00:27:45 I don't know what the number is because I didn't look that one up and, you know, mostly because it's in theaters now. So all three of us should know the number, or at least have an idea of how many people are in it. But I only remember how many people speak in those early scenes. But they get to that, they get home quickly, right? Yeah. So I think it's a pretty damn small cast.
Starting point is 00:28:08 So the idea is you're just going to try to guess based on what little, I'll give you a small amount of information about the movie. And if you get it, right on the money, then you get a point for that. And whoever gets two points first or the best after five rounds will be the winner. We go alphabetically by first name for this first game. So Alex, you are up first. From 2025, how many people or other things?
Starting point is 00:28:44 the way I keep saying that It'll make more sense in a second Well because it's like babe pig in the city or something Exactly There's like voices of things that You know where you don't see the person on screen But you hear their voice in there credited Or animals of course
Starting point is 00:29:01 Sometimes Not all the time But sometimes animals you see in films It'll say the name of the character And the name that they've never played it You know the two names I find it to be so cute So, Alex, how many people do you think, or how many performers were credited for the movie Good Boy from last year, which was, of course, the film where the entire movie was shot from the point of view of a dog?
Starting point is 00:29:30 Oh, man. I would say six. Six credited performances is incorrect. I don't want to indicate in which direction it's wrong, but Lisa, what would you guess? I'm going to say 27. I like it. I like that guess. But it turns out it's eight is the number we were looking for.
Starting point is 00:30:08 I just imagined a dog running around the neighborhood, you know? Yeah. But like apparently all these people, you just hear their voices, you don't see any of their faces. because, again, it's from the point of view of the dog. And the dog gets credit, and his name is Max played the dog in the movie's called Bandit. All right, so you're getting your feet wet, maybe starting to get a feel for how this works. Alex, you're up again. from
Starting point is 00:30:44 1975 a film called a boy and his dog oh man dog heavy um boy and his dog
Starting point is 00:30:56 I'm gonna go a little higher than last time I'll say 10 10 is your guess for a movie that implies that there's two characters
Starting point is 00:31:09 so it's not a You know, it's not necessarily a bad guess because we know how these things work, but that is incorrect. This is unbelievable. Lisa. What is it, a dog and a what and a man? A boy and his dog. And the boy was played by Don Johnson. Interesting.
Starting point is 00:31:38 A cult classic from 1975, because you, you know, you hear the dog's thought. He hears the dog's thoughts like they talk. to say 12. 12 is the number. Oh my God. Credited performances and a boy and his dog. Yes.
Starting point is 00:31:56 This is what I was talking about earlier that it's fun when somebody gets something that should be difficult. That has an amazing guess. And the craziest thing is the guy who does the voice of the dog gets the credit, but the dog itself
Starting point is 00:32:14 does not get a credit. Well, that's because SAG was, you know, I think some new rules maybe. It's kind of a walking the earth, you know, apocalypse kind of movie, I think. So, uh, so those, they must run into like, uh, 10 people along the way. All right. Back to you, Alex. Lisa's on the board, but here's your chance to get a point. How many credited performances in from 1975 also?
Starting point is 00:32:42 Dog Day Afternoon. Oh, boy. Okay, here we go. Here we go. Credited in that. Yeah. Let's do, oh. This one's tough because I feel like I could know it.
Starting point is 00:33:00 So it's like the other ones I'm just throwing it out. I would say nine. That's probably too low. I'm going to go a nine. Final answer? Yeah. Nope. Lisa.
Starting point is 00:33:19 Probably like the couple. There's like a bank robbery. there's got to be all the cops trying to get into the bank and then maybe he met with some people before a getaway driver or something, right? I'll say, I'm going to say, yeah, 24. As an excellent guess, it turns out it's 29.
Starting point is 00:33:44 Damn. But very good. You sussed out that there's a lot of people running around during a hostage situation. And also, I think they often cut to Al Pacino's boyfriend, played by, I think, Chris Sarrington, I think maybe. And, yeah, so 29 total. And no dogs, they're involved at all.
Starting point is 00:34:16 No. Oh, my God. And you know how it was just on Broadway with John Barrenthal and some other guy? Yeah, the other guy from the bear. Oh, Ebon, yeah. So what's funny, we were at a comedy club, I won't say which one. So his spot's not blown up, but he lives in the neighborhood. And so, like, someone ran in and was like, he's outside.
Starting point is 00:34:38 And then one by one, we kept going outside to stare at him. And I feel like him and his friends did realize what was happening. And he became to feel uncomfortable. But we really needed to see how high he was. He's a good actor. he's in the Odyssey. Well, he's in the accountant part two, and I'm a big accountant person.
Starting point is 00:35:00 Oh, you're like all on board for both chat, both part one and part two? Yeah, I like love, yeah, I want to have sex with Ben Affleck in that movie and most other films he's done for sure as well. Yeah, I want to have sex with him. I want to fuck Ben Affleck when he's getting dung of donuts outside his place. Yeah. You can take him whatever.
Starting point is 00:35:21 Okay, back to the game. Am I going to be able to go first on any of these? This is a nightmare. You're doing fine. Go in second. It seemed to work for you that one time. Yeah, it's true. It's true.
Starting point is 00:35:33 Yeah, maybe it's bad. Alex can keep getting it wrong. Yeah. Excuse me. Yeah, it's kind of, I think you're actually in a better position. But let's see. The next movie is another dog movie. This one's from 1957, a classic called Old Yellow.
Starting point is 00:35:51 Oh, God. Four. No. You're supposed to ask if it's my final answer and sort of pretend that I'm onto something. No. Lisa? Old Yeller. Did you ever see it?
Starting point is 00:36:18 No, but I know the book. I feel like I get the reference. there's a dead dog it must be a small town let's say credited I'm going to say nine another terrific guess
Starting point is 00:36:36 but you're two off it was seven God you gotta go with your instincts okay yeah and all the all the animals in that one went uncredited because I guess you know it's on a farm or something but but we do know that old yellow
Starting point is 00:36:50 was played by a dog named Spike cute yeah all right Alex this is the last one if you get this one right then we're gonna force a tie I've got a tie breaker ready to go but if you miss it Lisa's the winner from 1971 the movie Straw Dogs Oh that's a great movie Remade with James Marsden and somebody it wasn't as good Dogs, I would say 8.
Starting point is 00:37:32 Lisa, congratulations. Damn it. Yeah, but let's let Lisa go ahead and guess for fun. See, so you can rack up two points here. You've ever even heard of straw dogs? I'll say 15. You should sign up for if there's somewhere we're guessing numbers
Starting point is 00:37:54 and you're only one or two off every time. time. Competition. You would destroy it. It was 14. 14. And no dogs. No dogs credited in that one.
Starting point is 00:38:08 It's Dustin Hoffman and Susan George are a couple in a house like out in the woods. And a gang just shows up and terrorizes them. Oh, God. Yeah. It's really intense. As 1970s movies had a tendency to be. I was on a set. where we did a series rap on a cat,
Starting point is 00:38:30 but the cat had sensitive hearing, so we kind of had to like snap for her, and it was a special moment I'll always remember. That's very sweet. Yeah. So Dustin Hoffman's in Wag the Dog and Straw Dog. Yeah. Not many people like to talk about that.
Starting point is 00:38:47 No. It hardly ever comes up. I like to talk about how Don Cheadle is in Hotel for Dogs and Hotel Rwanda. Oh, man. Wait, wait, wait. And then Dustin Offman's also in Tootsie. Wait, what does that have to do with anything?
Starting point is 00:39:07 Isn't there a dog? A dog named Tootsie? No, the movie. No. The dog's not like the part. Tootsie doesn't even make sense as a title. Like, I don't even know if somebody, maybe at one point somebody calls Dustin Hoffman Toots or Tootsy, but it's an interesting. that they decided to call it that.
Starting point is 00:39:29 Oh, shit. I'm trying to something else. Yeah, don't worry about it. You can think about it during this brief break we're going to take. We're going to be back. And Lisa, the great news is since you won that game, you get to go first in our next game. Hell yeah. That's going to determine our winner today.
Starting point is 00:39:47 And how soon you're both welcome back anytime, but you'll be able to come back right away if you win today. And we'll do that after these messages. We're back, ADS. The game that's going to decide it all today is called the little search engine that could. Boop, boop. I typed a word into the search engine on IMDB. And then I wrote down the top 10 movies with that word in the title.
Starting point is 00:40:21 The two of you are going to take turns guessing movies that have that word in the title. the title and I'm just, I'm calling an audible right now. Normally, everybody, all three guests get three guesses apiece, but since it's just the two of you, let's make it four guesses each. So once I tell you what the word is, Lisa, you're going to guess what movie you think might be in the top 10, according to IMDB today. I looked it up today. You're going to tell me what movie thinks in the top 10. If you get the number one movie, it's worth 10 points,
Starting point is 00:40:58 the number 10 movies worth one point, and then there's all the points available in between those from two through nine. So excited. Well, add it up at the end. Well, wait until you hear what this word is before getting too into it. But you'll take turns with the guesses.
Starting point is 00:41:20 So don't say multiple titles with the word in it. Just guess one. each time it's your turn. Of course. Okay. Well, you just named several movies when I ask you to recommend one movie. That's true. Okay, Lisa, since that time of year, everybody's going back to school.
Starting point is 00:41:42 I chose the word back. And I'm going to guess, back to the future. Back to the Future is number one on the list, probably, would have been Alex's first guest as well. It's a tough break, but that's how it goes. But you still have plenty of opportunities to put
Starting point is 00:42:04 points on the board, Alex. What's your first guess of a movie with Back in the title? Okay. And it doesn't have to start with Back, right? It does not have to. Okay. I'm going to do the Empire Strikes
Starting point is 00:42:24 Back. You mean Star Wars, what's the official number four? The second. Yeah. Empire Strikes Back. Strangely, but maybe just because, you know, why type it into the search engine today? Like, why be looking for it? Now, Empire Strikes Back came in at number 13.
Starting point is 00:42:52 So it's not worth any points. but I still think you have a decent shot here unless Lisa can come up with the number two or number three movie. I mean, I'm lucky if I could think of another one. So I'm thinking there's got to be a sequel and then it's like back in black, back to basics. I'm like thinking what are little signs to do?
Starting point is 00:43:23 Back. back to back twins hmm let's see I can't believe there's so many of them no it's crazy
Starting point is 00:43:34 how often that word is in a fairly well-known movie titles but then also you know there's some that you might not have heard of but that's about all I could say at this point other than other than you can
Starting point is 00:43:51 you can guess what might be a title of a movie. Yeah, yeah, yeah. Part is it has back in it. It's like, baby, she's got back. She's back. Who's back? Who's back?
Starting point is 00:44:12 Who's back? Can I say back to the future, too? You can say those words out loud and then I will tell you whether or not it is on the list. Like sequels are allowed. Oh, yeah, he's got a Star Wars one in. But I don't even know if that's what the sequel's called. there might be a funnier name attached to it.
Starting point is 00:44:35 So that'll be bad if these walls are going to say back to basics. I don't think I don't, I don't, I don't, I think I've ever heard of a movie called Back to Basics. And it's definitely not on this list in front of me. Okay. But you are still way in the lead. Of course, yeah. Go back to Alex. I know what he's about to do.
Starting point is 00:44:58 We'll go for Alex's second guess. You think I'm about to guess to this sequel? Yeah. I'm not. I'm going to say, and I might save it for later, I'm going to say, Jay and Silent Bob Strikeback. Oh, that's such a good one.
Starting point is 00:45:17 And strangely, deep, deep, deep on the list. It didn't make the top 10. It was very far down on the list, but that's certainly something I thought of right away. All right. All right. He didn't take the sequel. Lisa, what do you want to do for your next guess?
Starting point is 00:45:40 Well, I just, I know you're a stickler, so I'm scared that, you know, I'm not, because I remember one time with Birdman, you really wanted the whole name. I still do. I still can't remember what the name of that movie was. So that's hard. And then I'm thinking of like dance movies. you know, like the aliens are back.
Starting point is 00:46:05 I also am like trying to think if Amy Winehouse's documentary was called Back to Black or not. It's like the doc is on it. Someone's back. See it. I'm going to have to do it. I'm going to say back to the future too. President, we're coming from the past.
Starting point is 00:46:33 Look out, mom. We're coming. Do you, Alex, do you think that's what that movie is called? I know it's, I know that's what it's called. Oh, all right. Well, then you're both wrong. Something must be, this must be one of those things where you. Say it again, Lisa.
Starting point is 00:46:57 I'm not, that won't be my final answer. Black and black. Oh, black, oh, that's black. I wish the word was black. Men in black. We're coming back. Oh, my God. Like, this is so annoying.
Starting point is 00:47:18 I'm going to say back to black. Final answer? Yeah. Back to black, the Amy Winehouse movie, 2024 is number eight on the list. Wow. Congratulations. You got one.
Starting point is 00:47:33 And that's worth three more points. So you have to get two of these remaining titles on the list, Alex, to catch up to Lisa. Okay. So let's have your next guest. Okay. What's crucial. Let's do bring her back, the horror movie from 2025. Number four.
Starting point is 00:48:01 Yes. Wow. Australian, Lisa. God, I was dealing. Horror movie made by the same people who may talk to me. I'm wondering if they're just going to keep making Australian horror movies and just each one has a three-word title like that. That'd be interesting filmography.
Starting point is 00:48:25 But that is worth seven points for Alex. So basically to, well, we see if Lisa can get some more points on the board first, but Alex does still have a. a chance here if he can think of, you know, one of the top movies with back in the time. Yeah, it seems like he's holding on to some stuff to humiliate me. You know, I keep thinking of the poltergeist, you know, that they're back. Yeah. That's just a quote.
Starting point is 00:48:59 But someone's back. Like the aliens are bad. Like someone's back. things come back sometimes like that's story too the toys are back and down boys on the side writing in cards
Starting point is 00:49:17 who is back oh in the box get in the box oh no back oh black oh no that's not it like I keep thinking of other words
Starting point is 00:49:33 and getting excited I mean to remember it's not I wish the backstreet boys had some movies oh back streets or is that easy streets back street yeah I'll say the back streets mean streets
Starting point is 00:49:50 oh okay then never mind never mind okay Ferris Bueller just trying to think dancing There's no easy way back. There's no easy way back?
Starting point is 00:50:10 There's not. Okay, okay. But is that your answer? Well, you can't be discouraging before you, I clock in for the finals. Because clearly I want to continue trying to piece together a movie title. But I don't want to be disrespectful to everyone involved here. Back to Black. So I already guessed that.
Starting point is 00:50:34 that is tough the way the morning did. Oh, I saw it. Okay, the way, way back. The way, way back was a comedy with Sam Rockwell about a kid who has to sit in the back of the car when they go to the pool, the neighborhood pool. And he becomes a lifeguard, right?
Starting point is 00:51:00 It's that movie. What's that? That's pretty much it, yeah. Yeah. And that movie came in at number 18. Okay, okay. 18 on the list. Aubrey Plaza's in it, Audrey, I mean.
Starting point is 00:51:16 But yeah. But it's cool to see a mind work, you know? Yeah, and it wasn't a, you know, like, you are, like, I don't know where you need to go to take advantage of this, but your guessing ability is on point. With both games today, your guesses were very strong, even though they weren't always right. They were strong guesses.
Starting point is 00:51:41 Alex, if you figured this out, do you think you know? Because if you can name the number two movie, you got this. If you can name the number three movie, I'd be shocked because I had not heard of it. Okay. So let me just say, this list is based on like the order of this list, it is based on the popularity you know the rankings on
Starting point is 00:52:08 IMDB based on how often these titles are searched I type in back and then I just write down the top 10 right okay so it's oftentimes like if there's a movie out right now or
Starting point is 00:52:26 you know like or it's just out or you know or people are talking about it you know that kind of thing Okay, well then knowing that, see, back to school by Dangerfield was floating in my head because you said back to school when we started. But in terms of recency, what about, I don't know if this will count. All right. Let's do back rooms. Back rooms.
Starting point is 00:52:52 Wow, that's good. Yeah, back rooms is number two on the list. Oh, my God. You did it. Wow, I'm crying right now. What an exciting finish that was. Yeah, back rooms, the surprise hit motion picture that's out. Did you see it, Lisa?
Starting point is 00:53:16 I did not. I've had a busy summer. Yeah. You're okay without it. Yeah. I will. I'm actually diving into spooky season and my goal is to do as much spooky things as possible. Oh, okay.
Starting point is 00:53:29 I'm sure it'll get in there. Yeah, you can watch it during spooky season. It'll probably, it's probably like, you know, only a few weeks away from being on one of the streamers. Delta's got a lot of horror movies. I've been watching some sick shit in the skies. The planes are really like, give you some, it's too much selection. I just sit there scrolling through the options and then just take a nap. But let's, first of all, before I reveal the.
Starting point is 00:53:59 rest of the answers in this game. Let me get your plugs, Alex. What would you like to promote? Oh, you could just check me out on socials at Alex Castain, A-L-E-X-C-A-S-T-A-G-N-A. And then watch Doug and I's Comics Unleashed episode. Yeah, whatever that is. Do you get Castagney a lot?
Starting point is 00:54:24 Constantly, constantly. I have family that phonetically changed our last name, cowardly so that it stops happening. But yeah, it's probably hurt my career. Maybe Jessica Chastain's family did that. Maybe her name used to be A, G, N, E, at the end. Well, if she ever responds
Starting point is 00:54:41 to any of my letters, I would know. She just won't get back to you. And you get to name who I call a shithead at the end of the show. Who would you like it to be? Oh, just anyone in the ether? Anyone that you think is a shithead would like force
Starting point is 00:54:59 me to say it out loud. Okay. Okay. Ken Edwards. Is that the person we're supposed to know? No. Which makes him the worst kind of shithead. Okay, good.
Starting point is 00:55:15 Here we go. Just for fun, I wrote down some of the movies that didn't make the top 10 that I had heard of with back in the title. At 35 was Sister Act 2 back in the habit. Hey. I knew someone was coming back.
Starting point is 00:55:32 And then number 15 is Looney Tunes back in action. Fun. Number 12 is Jack Reacher. And then the subtitle, you know, after the colon, is Never Go Back. And then now here's the top 10. Oh, also, I forgot where it landed, but it's funny that there's a Ben Affleck movie with back in the title called The Way Back, just one way. Come on.
Starting point is 00:56:03 Wow. But then the one that's number 10, that title's been used twice. And in 2010, there was a movie called The Way Back with Jim Sturgis. So that's number 10 on the list for some reason. Now, here's where you really both. God, if I just didn't add one more way. No, it wouldn't have been worth any points because I've been after. one didn't rank, but
Starting point is 00:56:26 I'm just pointing out that your love of Ben Affleck only goes so deep. I kept thinking of like forces of nature, you know, and that's not in there. Uh-uh. So here's where the Back to the Future thing got confusing.
Starting point is 00:56:42 Those movies are all called part and then the number. Back to Future part three is number nine on the list. And then back to Black is number eight, and then number seven is back to the future part two. So close to saying this, Alex, you know, ultimately back rooms was a better answer,
Starting point is 00:57:07 but the Roddy Dangerfield comedy from 1986 back to school is number six. Wow. Above Empire Strikes Back, blows my mind. Way above, but I think maybe some people out there just, it's back to school time, so maybe they just really are looking for movies about going back. to school. He finally got his respect. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:57:28 And then number five was a little number with Jamie Fox and Cameron Diaz from a couple years ago called Back in Action. That was like, I believe it was straight to Netflix. And then Bring Her Back was number four. Number three, the one that I thought no one would get and I was right. And it's not because I'm smart. It's just because why would you know about a German movie from last year called Back to the 90s? Sounds fun.
Starting point is 00:57:57 Yeah, I guess it's on prime. So I guess it's, I got subtitles or whatever. But anyway, that's that game. Congratulations, once again to Alex for being our winner. And Lisa, thank you for playing. What would you like to promote? You know, I'm on the road. I'm on the road always.
Starting point is 00:58:21 So check out me out at Glitter Cheese on Instagram. or like glitter cheese.com please trigger.com for my tour dates um i'll be in Dallas some Brooklyn some Philly new Orleans Lawrence Kansas DC I'm out um and then I'm yeah I'm in this movie called the regulars and then I always my Netflix special it's there oh you know give it a give it a world it's what's it it's called night owl okay and um yeah still desperate for people to watch it people are like what's next? I'm like, you can still watch that actually. Nothing's next.
Starting point is 00:58:59 Yeah. Don't sit around waiting when that's right there. Yeah. It's ready to go. It's hot and ready. Oh, I have a podcast. If you're a Law & Order SVU or a true crime person, it's called That's Messed Up, an SVU podcast. Didn't Mr.
Starting point is 00:59:14 Murcha? Just say that she wants to never stop playing Olivia Benson? She's incredible. I thought she would go to 30 because she's hosting the Emmys this year and she wanted to do comedy back in the day. A lot of people we interview say she's so funny. Yeah. Her dreams to host Sessa now. I wonder what this Emmys. I wonder if they'll go to 30 and then she'll switch over or what she's up to. But sometimes I get not jaded,
Starting point is 00:59:42 but like I'll put on a newer one and be like, oh, whatever. And then eight hours later, I'm like, wow. It's still got it. Like she's the best. It really is the best. She, yeah, it's really great. new showrunner. I had some showrunner issues throughout the 20s, but right now, it's a good, it's a good group. I just watched Chris Maloney's architectural digest video.
Starting point is 01:00:07 It's unbelievable. Oh my gosh, that show, I see why they're going to go until 100. Yeah. Yeah. Get that money. They're getting the money, but she's also doing great work. Like, she changed some legislation this year to get rid of the backlog for rape kits with the joyful Heart Foundation.
Starting point is 01:00:24 Like she's the shit. I love her. She took over Daniel Radcliffe's one person show. You saw her in it? I guess what motherfucker? Of course I saw her. And then what happens? And then Jalen Brunson's parents were there.
Starting point is 01:00:38 And Jalen Brunson will be in this season of SVU and confirmed. But so the show is like it encourages audience participation, which I fucking hate because not everyone can project. So you miss some things, but whatever. Like, but it's a beautiful show. is at the core about suicide. So it is poignant and like there are serious moments. And she's about to do the fucking last line of the show. You can tell it's like gearing up in this monologue towards the end. And it's like all the reasons like it's called million little
Starting point is 01:01:08 reasons like all the reasons you want to stay alive. And she's about to go like one million or every brilliant thing, whatever. And a woman yells out meeting Mariska Hargitay. And then all these people start like clapping and making noise. And then she has to like wait. And then. And then and deliver the final line of the play. Oh, my fucking God. Like, can you even believe that? That's so crazy to be watching, like, an anti-suicide play, and then you're like, I hope this bitch kills herself.
Starting point is 01:01:39 That's crazy. Yeah, that's so crazy. That's lunatic behavior. You know, I always cannot stand. Like, when anybody's, like, mid-performance, like, especially, like, stand-ups, like, now that everybody's playing arenas all the time. I'm now. Like, just the random, I love you.
Starting point is 01:01:54 from the audience like what is happening shut the hell up that's not it's just I hate things that like derail or like now they're doing you know rocky horrors on Broadway did you go to that Lisa? Not yet but but the people you know some people yell out those
Starting point is 01:02:10 shoutouts that they do when they're watching a midnight screening of the movie and you know so it's the show I hear has a pretty weird rhythm to it because some people are too well you know what I love there's a really popular person online called Tiny, Tiny Younger,
Starting point is 01:02:26 and like people are obsessed with her mac and cheese. She's just like an incredible cook, like a home cook. But as a cookbook, like people are obsessed with her. And she posted, hey, we're going to go to this show. Is it movie theater like fun Rocky Horror Rules or Broadway rules if anyone has any information? And I'm like, and that is a great audience member. Like crowdsourcing some scoop before you go.
Starting point is 01:02:49 Yeah. But then the answer is they don't encourage you nor discourage it. They just will hope it doesn't happen too much. Oh, my God. I was just a Titanic, an amazing, that was so funny. And there's a quiet part in the show, and you just hear a woman go, I'm not interested in this play anymore. Oh, my God.
Starting point is 01:03:08 It's crazy. It's crazy. People have lost their fucking minds. But I did see Mariska on Broadway, and I love her. Yeah. Fair enough. I don't care. Why am I promoting her?
Starting point is 01:03:20 I'll, like, come see me. Yeah. Go see her. that the Broadway shows over with and Mariska's doing just fine. Jesus. We have a friend. I don't know if you're friends with her,
Starting point is 01:03:31 but I know my dear friend is writing for her for the Emmys. I'm excited. Oh, that's cool. I'm going to be doing stand-up in Rochester, New York, at Comedy at the Carlson this Friday and Saturday, September 4th and 5th. We're doing Douglas movies at City Winery in New York City on Monday, September 7th.
Starting point is 01:03:52 got a killer lineup for that. If anyone cancels, I'm in town. Exactly, exactly. I got both of you going to be in town, so sit by the phone. Yeah. I'll be outside with a poster board full of your headshots anyway. I swear to God, one of my guests that said, yes, I'll be there. I want to do it.
Starting point is 01:04:10 Yes, I looked up his tour dates, and he's supposed to be doing a show elsewhere that night. So you probably, one of you probably will get a comment. I mean, I don't know why he thinks he's available, but maybe I read it wrong. I don't know. But all of my dates and deeds are at duglowsmovies.com. Thank you again. Wait, Doug, I do have something else to say.
