Starting point is 00:00:00 Lights are going up, snow is falling down, there's a feeling of goodwill around town. It could only mean one thing, McRib is here. People throwing parties, ugly sweaters everywhere, stockings hung up by the chimney with care. It could only mean one thing McRib is here at participating McDonald's for a limited time Doug hates candy wrappers screening baby sticky seeds with 50 as a pop or kernels in his teeth
Starting point is 00:00:37 there's still not one that he won't see cause Doug loves movies Hey everybody, my name is Doug and I love the movies. This is Doug loves movies recording on Sunday, December 1st, 2024. And my guests today are a Bo Johnson, Ellery Smith and Jeff Tate. Hello. Hello. Thank you. Hello. Bo Johnson, Ellery Smith and Jeff Tate hello hello Always awkward let's meet them individually and alphabetically by first name which in this case is the same No matter how you slice it you're in the same order He's back because
Starting point is 00:01:22 How you slice it you're in the same order he's back because The last episode ended in a very exciting three person tie It's my John saying hey, Bo hello happy to be back That was quite an exciting finish of course I immediately tried to get all three of you to come back and settle this thing, but you know the other two people have to appear down the road because they were, uh, who knows what, uh, what kind of stuff they're getting into this weekend,
Starting point is 00:01:54 but how's December been treating you so far, Bo? It's been, it's been pretty good. It's been a lot of, a lot of time on this podcast, I guess it was the first day of December. I didn't even realize. Yeah. We're just getting started. I'm in a, my Thanksgiving is just my girlfriend, my parents and I, and my parents are 80 and 70 so they don't have big appetites. And so a Turkey is a very formidable challenge for four people. And we are working through leftovers still.
Starting point is 00:02:26 Oh my God. Leftovers. I, uh, challenge for four people and we are working through leftovers still oh my god leftovers I'm not a fan of the concept I why don't have any that's why I made myself sick on Thursday But Congratulations on I don't know something oh Yeah, coming back to the show so soon so quickly especially after you've eaten so much You know they say you're supposed to wait 30 days before doing movie trivia on a full stomach I'm familiar with the warning. She's a first timer on the show, very funny comedian who was guested on my other shows. It's Ellery Smith. Hey Ellery.
Starting point is 00:03:18 Hey, thank you for having me. I'm very excited. Well, how are you, you know, when it comes to movie trivia, how do you rate yourself? I would say I'm really down the middle. I watch a lot of movies, but not necessarily prestige movies. And so I think I have large gaps in my knowledge. But so if it's a quality film we're talking about, there's a chance you haven't seen it like you really seek out garbage Yeah, I think kind of kind of yeah I have to be amc past so I feel I see a lot of random stuff and then a lot of other movies
Starting point is 00:03:55 I just totally miss It's a good it's a smart way to approach movies because if you just go into a thing Oh, this is gonna suck if it's even better that if it's better That's pleasant surprise if it's not meet met your expectations You know you go to see something everybody's raving about and it's it ends up not being good. That's oh the worst So disappointing. Yeah, I try to just judge movies on if it was a fun time Not if it was like good. I most movies pass pass that test I do they a lot of movies really aim to please especially more and more so now you really got to go to
Starting point is 00:04:30 documentaries and indies for you know to get any kind of You know sad ending or you know, I will say I see a lot of document I see a lot of documentaries. So my documentary knowledge is pretty expansive and then like the classics are sort of missing Well, that's you know, there's you don't have enough time for everything. That's for sure. Like I've really fallen off on I don't Make the effort to see every big animated film like I used to you know, I've sort of Grown out of needing to see all of them, especially since there they tend to just sort of more so than a lot of other movies animated movies are pretty easy to
Starting point is 00:05:10 You know they stick around you know they keep Especially if it's got a holiday element, and I'll bring it back every you know Whatever holiday it is yeah, you'll catch the good ones Don't make themselves known they will shove it down your throat much like Jeff did with some pecan pie Near three days ago He is back because the last time he was on get this this is that hasn't really happened in the history of the show now
Starting point is 00:05:41 It's happening all over the place. We had a two-person tie the last time he was on And his name is Jeff Tate. Hey Jeff Hey, how's it going? Good, I know you must be in another country or something after I heard that time delay And then it was my turn to talk and I biffed it. So how did that feel being knocked down a peg and having to share the wind for once in your goddamn life? I mean, it felt fine.
Starting point is 00:06:19 It felt the same. Like any win is a win. Even a tie is a win. If you tie for first. Yeah, that's what Bo was saying just the other day. Like any win is a win even a tie is a win Yeah, that's what just the other day I'm glad we're all in agreement on that alright. Well, we'll get to the games here in a second But before we do that I have a question We're gonna pay a visit to Recommendation nation that's the segment where I ask each one of my guests to recommend
Starting point is 00:06:48 one individual movie that people May or may not enjoy no pressure, but you know Make it good Bo you're up first My recommendation for the day is a movie. I just saw for the first time in the last month or so. A single re-release in a theater near where I live and it's called The Fall, which I had not heard of it before. It stars Lee Pace as the primary lead and then a younger child actress. I don't know if she's done much since then. And I think it is maybe this is not the most helpful recommendation in the sense of
Starting point is 00:07:32 it is famous. For my girlfriend for not being on any streaming services. And it was one of it's one of her very favorite movies. It's about a stunt man who is like a kind of a stunt man back in the early history of film and he's hurt and conducting a stunt and it's about a friendship he kind of develops with a young woman who's being taken care of in a nunnery and he kind of tells her this fantastical tale, which is concocted as they ruse to kind of get her to help him get some pain medicine. But it is I thought it was just really well done super original way of kind of building a setting for showing a story kind of the only thing
Starting point is 00:08:20 I could remember that was kind of like it is like the Princess Bride has a similar structure where they use the grandfather's story as a way to kind of feed into the movie and it was kind of like that but even more involved and I thought it just was visually very originally shot too and I think Lee Pace is a really underrated actor too. I have all those same feelings about it without ever having seen it. You know the re-release that you got to see when it was in your town started with a premiere at a film festival I was at last September at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. And I go every year and it's a great festival and I love it. But I really wanted to see that movie because I'd never seen it, but also it's great to see on the big screen. And the festival scheduled my Douglas movies taping at the same time.
Starting point is 00:09:27 Oh man, a cruel twist of fate. As the movie, yes. So it was one that I wanted to see. Because of everything you said that I've heard about it, it's very not only beautiful to look at, but then it's like a full-blown Lee Pace movie and most of his better roles and appearances on film have been in as supporting characters. So I am excited to see him in the lead role. So I will say, I think it may be, I don't know if it's a show, but I did a little Google, I think you maybe can purchase it for some strong, some streamers.
Starting point is 00:10:00 So I hope that is the case and it is not a different the fall. And I will, I will re echo that if it does show up in a theater, it is a movie that is behest a big screen. And I thought was also cool about it is that this is probably because it was a special event. But people like some people dressed up for the movie and it takes a certain type of like costume in a film for that even to be possible where I was like it kind of does have an iconic costume that is not that iconic because no one knows this movie but I was like this should have
Starting point is 00:10:34 been an iconic costume well the guy got a lot more the director Tarsim got a lot more attention for his I think it was probably like his next movie, which was The Cell starring J. Lo and Vince Vaughn. And it's a very visually arresting movie as well. But I don't know what happened to him So I think something happened to him called Julia Roberts because he directed mirror mirror Where she played the Wicked Witch and He hasn't been he's not prolific. I'll say that but maybe also he probably directs Maybe does a lot of directing on TV that happens sometimes somebody seems like their film curve fell off
Starting point is 00:11:26 It's like no. They're just busy making Television but great recommendation bow good luck finding it everybody Ellery what would you like to recommend I? Watched the family stone this weekend, which is a movie I've seen a few times, but hits really hard. It's a Got such a stacked cast. It's Diane Keaton, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rachel McAdams, a few other really interesting people. And it's like a Christmas movie. And it's basically just about like bringing somebody home for the holidays that your family doesn't like. And it's fun. It's basically just about bringing somebody home for the holidays that your family doesn't like and it's fun. It's really fun and it's one of the better Christmas movies and so I watched that on
Starting point is 00:12:11 Thursday and then I spent all weekend trying to find something that felt as good to watch and I felt like everything fell flat. That's interesting. So you really, you know... It just feels very warm. Like it's it's a lot of practical sets and like a gorgeous, you know, house, I think probably somewhere in New Jersey. Yeah, they got a nice Christmas tree. Yes, it's very Nancy Meyers, but it's like actually very funny and and,
Starting point is 00:12:39 you know, biting and sweet. And then it's strange because the siblings like swap romantic partners. And you're sort of like did that just happen, but it's a good It's it's like a good holiday watch I Mean the the swapping thing says some people get set off when they when they think about it Then there's also somebody did you see something a little traction on the internet a day or two ago? Somebody did you see something a little traction on the internet a day or two ago? For saying I'm I'm just now finding out that Luke and Owen Wilson are brothers I'm like no kind of idiot like how is that even possible to that person must be 19 But let's be like eight must be so young and just like didn't watch anything from you know
Starting point is 00:13:26 All the whole Wes Anderson all of us Anderson's Yeah, well, that's the thing is that they really they really did start out together with With Wes, but then just you know I always thought they looked a little different from each other because one of them Obviously had some sort of severe Incident with his nose at a young age But you know they definitely both have a Lot of carried the vibe of not giving a shit about what's going on whatever they're in But he was really
Starting point is 00:14:04 Luke will have been really committed to something recently now I forget what it was, but he really and always been becoming more of a character actor, too Yeah, he was really good in this but very like I I always forget he's even in it It's a very sort of understated character Yeah, well also I always get it mixed up with the movie about the Coopers, and I also always screw up the title to, they're the Coopers, it's the Coopers, something like that. Hang in, it's hanging with Mr. Cooper.
Starting point is 00:14:37 No, Jeff. What I think- You're making it work. I'm sorry. What I always think of with the Family Stone is I have a strange fascination with Dermot Mulroney because he feels like a leading man who didn't quite take with society because he was in like the wedding date as the lead. But he almost was a huge, huge star and it didn't feel like it quite carried. And my friend Jen and I have a dumb like life bit where we'll ask people what their favorite Dermot Mulroney movie is, as if he's a really famous guy.
Starting point is 00:15:13 I feel like low key he is. Also, every once in a while, he pops into improv shows out here in L.A., which I love. Also, The Family Stone is like the first movie where he's dying his hair and it really he can't pull it off. It's died way too dark. Well, also, there's the whole Dermot Mulroney Dylan McDermott issue okay maybe I'm thinking Dylan Mcdermott where they get confused for each other all the time I think you had the right one I think Dermot is in the movie you were talking about but then the movie I was talking about It's called love the coopers and now based on just have you ever seen it, Hillary? Never okay, so based on what you know about family stone listen to this description of
Starting point is 00:15:55 Meet the coopers the intertwined stories of four generations of coopers unfold right before the annual family reunion on Christmas Eve starring Diane Keaton oh How crazy is that that it's essentially the same movie set up, but she's in both interesting Similar years are they you just want to be cozy and that's the easiest way to do it short of being in Hallmark movies was the set to be cozy and that's the easiest way to do it, short of being in hallmark movies. What were the years of the two movies? Yeah, you know how like No Strength Attached and Friends with Benefits came out the same year and it's like the same movie but yeah, different casts? That was really, that was pretty wild that they both studios went through
Starting point is 00:16:41 that because neither one of them had like, like love the Coopers and the family stone or like you know they're kind of both recurring you know family stone I think it's got kind of a nastier thing going on yeah ten years between the two okay yeah but family stone the ad the poster is like a wedding ring on a finger Yeah, fingers. It's on the wedding really does not factor in you would think that there would be more hijinks around the wedding ring But it's like really a footnote in the movie. Yeah, I Just guess I'm just doomed to have those two movies completely confused with each other but also another fun thing about love the coopers is it the?
Starting point is 00:17:26 The main the patriarchal characters played by Steve Martin, which is you know Always a plus okay Jeff We've run out of time But if you would like to record movie it has to be it has to go next in alphabetical order Uh, if you were looking these up in a movie review book the fall and family stone would be They're both in the f section one almost right after the other Wow
Starting point is 00:17:58 Isn't that weird? Okay. No, you can just recommend any any movie doesn't No, I had to check, but mine doesn't. It works. It's next. It's it's an alphabetical order. I'm going to recommend the Hudsucker Proxy. Oh, OK. It feels it feels Christmasy.
Starting point is 00:18:14 It's a it's like a weird, fun, interesting movie. I saw somebody, you know, saying that, you know, people sleep on Hudsucker, Hudsucker Proxyud soccer proxy and I was like no I sleep on a sealy post-traumatic but just because it sounds like a mattress doesn't mean it is no it's um it's a lot of people people that like it love it and people who don't like it it's it's probably because they're just completely unfamiliar with it you know like it seems people are really really get super into it, but Somebody was suggesting that
Starting point is 00:18:53 It get made remade and then somebody else on social media said that it's a Somebody tried to make it into a musical a stage musical And I thought that sounds like a terrific idea because the movie a somebody tried to make it into a musical, a stage musical. And I thought that sounds like a terrific idea because the movie kind of has the attitude and the sets and the costumes of like a classic musical, but without musical numbers. Yeah. I mean, that's true. That makes a lot of sense.
Starting point is 00:19:20 Yeah. And Jennifer Jason Lee gives a polarizing performance because she really lies into the old timey talky talk. You know, I think it's one of the it's one of the rare movies that like it fully shows it has both Coen brothers and Sam Raimi. Like they made it together. But like you can see both of their styles kind of like working together at some points and working against each other at some points.
Starting point is 00:19:50 Hmm. OK, films school. Well, I mean, Bo talked forever. We had to listen to both dissertation on the. I was just trying to pretend I know enough, like almost as much as Bo does. I could just see you sitting there going, what movie do I know a lot about? But The Fall, The Family Stone, or The Hudsucker Proxy, I just like the way all of those sound together. Proxy. I just like the way all of those sound together and we're definitely sending people off to see some movies they may not have been familiar with. So
Starting point is 00:20:32 that's, you can't ask for better than that in this segment. I guess next week I should start asking for holiday movies but I think we accidentally got like one and a half holiday movies in this mix because I think Hudson's like a proxy kind of feels like a Christmas movie in parts of it. Yeah, I mean, it's at least it's wintertime. Yeah. Oh my God.
Starting point is 00:20:58 If every movie takes place in wintertime was a Christmas movie. I think that counts, right? Isn't that like the although I guess Die Hard does have like Christmas but I do think anything that takes place in the wintertime is a de facto holiday movie. It kind of has to be just because it definitely sets the time of year but also you know there's a hell a lot of snow in January and February in some places and you know, it's funny that Valentine's movies are rarely take place in like in the snow. Right? Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. They always have more want to have a more sunny disposition, I guess. All right. Well, we're gonna we've really discovered a lot today.
Starting point is 00:21:39 We're gonna hopefully discover a winner of my games after these messages We are back and our first game today is I Mean I feel like it's everybody's favorite Maybe just because the title is so juvenile stupid and the game is called ABCD's It's the game is called ABCD's And I have to say it that way I cannot I cannot not say it like just normally I can't just go Yeah, see I can almost couldn't do it just then it's a spelling game of sorts
Starting point is 00:22:22 It's a confusing game at times, but I'll walk you through it Each time it's a person's turn or it will go in alphabetical order as I mentioned earlier Both and Ellery than Jeff was your turn I'll give you a letter you name any movie that begins with that letter But if it matches the movie I wrote down ahead of time You automatically win the game I think In one of the more recent episodes somebody won a midway through this and it was it was very exciting Now I know you're saying what we're gonna spell something. What are we spelling well in honor of this episode? being
Starting point is 00:23:00 basically released on cyber Monday Let's spell cyber Monday So the first letter to bow will be the letter C then y to Ellery B to Jeff until we go all the way through Cyber Monday and there will be a theme That you may catch on to as we go along and might help you to match or might make it even harder It could go either way depending on your brain But are you ready I am ready okay, so the first letter to you is C And this you know this is always just the fact that it could happen if you match
Starting point is 00:23:46 You will be the winner. I think it has happened even Okay, I'm gonna go with casino Royale You're not gonna believe this But that is not correct And there's two different movies called casino Royale, so I could have you had two chances I'm thinking of the more modern the more modern one my my era is James Bond. Yeah, Daniel Craig. Mm-hmm Mm-hmm That's movie that along with maverick and countless others
Starting point is 00:24:23 Driving crazy when a character is, you know, quote unquote, good at poker. But what they're good at is being miraculously dealt an amazing hand and just sitting there and revealing said amazing hand. They don't do anything and they end up with a royal flush. But I wrote down a movie called Chappy. Happy Chappy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:24:52 OK, the next letter to Ellery is why? Name any movie that begins with the letter Y. I'm going to say the movie yesterday. OK, did you Just see somebody posting about that movie. I did I just saw I read a tweet about it like two days ago You wrote a tweet about it. No, I read a tweet. Okay I'm even while there was your tweet, but I think we saw the same tweet and I was actually almost moved to respond to it because I don't respond to a lot of them, but
Starting point is 00:25:29 Was it the person who said could somebody? Explain to me what the fuck was going on with the movie yesterday. Yes. It was something exactly like that I mean they were just so confused by Because that was my attitude I I heard the premise of the movie like when you see the trailer sure and then the movie came out I didn't get around to seeing it I didn't get around to seeing it because part of the reason was I was just sort of like What more are they gonna do with that premise besides? You know the guy everybody thinks the guy wrote all the all these great Beatles songs, you know
Starting point is 00:26:02 Everyone's just gonna be like, oh this guy's a great songwriter. Like, what's gonna happen? I never saw the movie. I always assumed he had a brain injury. So he like, like he was the only person who was living in the world where the Beatles didn't exist. Right. But that's the problem is everybody thinks his music is so great because they don't
Starting point is 00:26:21 recognize it because the Beatles don't exist in this scenario. Wild. Oh man, your movie is better of him being like, check out this song and everybody's like, that's a Beatles song. Who are the Beatles? That's kind of what I thought was going on in that. I can make up any Beatles song. I can. Make up any Beatles song I could I could That'd be such a weird a pointless skill to have that you can without having heard it yet. You can play any Beatles song Not any being aware of it at all, but yeah, so the movie yesterday is
Starting point is 00:26:58 it's just profoundly goofy movie in terms of like Like it would have maybe been an interesting short, you know, or like you said make some alterations into the plot other than just I Yeah, but also it had terrible timing because it came out like a week or two after the Bruce Springsteen movie that everybody loved that I didn't I didn't like that either So there so there Do I know what I wrote down? Yes 20 minutes later. I wrote down
Starting point is 00:27:36 You've got mail. Oh, no way. Okay, I feel like Hmm B is your next letter Jeff baby mama I like the speed and accuracy and That's not what I wrote I wrote Bicentennial man oh Yeah speaking of Robin Williams he is the next letter for bow Hmm I'm trying to think The theme I Don't think I have anything for that I'm gonna go with
Starting point is 00:28:21 that I'm gonna go with. Hmm. Seems like this moment is always so excited because I feel like you might just blurt out what I have written down. No, I'm, I don't think I have anything that matches the vague theme I have in mind, so I'm going to go with eat, pray love. Okay. That's a good answer. I mean, it's a title that I would definitely go to under other circumstances. But to fit this theme today, I went with ex machina.
Starting point is 00:28:56 Oh, my gosh. OK. I'm mad at my brain. R is the next letter for Ellery. I'm going to say Rambo. I like that answer. I don't think it's on theme but I think it's close. The only two that come to mind are Red Rocket and Rambo and I think Rambo is closer to what I think that the theme might be. It's fun like almost feeling like trying to kind of have
Starting point is 00:29:27 psychic circling in. Yeah. Vibrations. Yeah. But it's neither. I'll tell you, it's neither of those. No reason to kick oneself because this is like a motion picture made for children. But there is a movie called robots. Oh, I've seen it it's an excellent movie oh there you go Robin Williams oh wow okay I didn't know that that theme was coming together isn't you and McGregor like the main robot yeah
Starting point is 00:29:55 it's a it's a pretty good movie I think I might even have it on DVD Wow yeah I think I agree with you I think I did like that movie It's so hard to keep them all straight With your wallies and your whatnot I do think the animated robot movies is a little saturated now. There's one right wild robot out Well, see these are just regular robots, but robots have gone wild According to the more recent robot release Amazon X letter for Jeff. Moscow on the Hudson.
Starting point is 00:30:29 Oh, you're so close. Damn it. Does Moscow then Moscow? No, you're right though. It is just one word. The word is Megan. Ah, that's a good movie. Or Megan, if you will.
Starting point is 00:30:46 Did you, Bo, have you seen Ballerina? That's not what it's called. Abigail. Abigail. I don't think I've seen Abigail, no. Abigail is Megan if it was instead of, you know, a doll that kills people,
Starting point is 00:31:03 it's like a little ballerina that kills people. Oh, okay. Yeah, it's pretty fun. I'm gonna look that up. It's good stuff. Oh, is the next letter for Bo. Oh for Bo. Oh, my gosh. Oh, indeed. I know the theme and I don't know a movie. I'm trying to think of there's a movie that matches. I have one that will at least keep me from having the right letter, but oh yeah.
Starting point is 00:31:31 You don't want to be eliminated, but it is fun to try. All right. I think I'm just going to have to hang on alphabetically. Ocean's 11. Oh, that's always fun because what if I had written down Ocean's 12, Ocean's 13? I'm very confident that this does not match the theme, but least would like to know one movie with the right letter. Well, I thought you might've had it with this one because it's a movie that
Starting point is 00:32:00 people talk about a lot for various reasons is called Office Space. Oh, so good. And is the next letter and good luck with it. And well, I'm sensing like a technology theme, but office space that threw me for a loop because that's I mean, I guess about that. I guess that's about the nature of like our work I mean his themes go it's pretty loose I'm gonna say Napoleon did you see the most recent Napoleon film? No, I didn't, but I do remember the poster.
Starting point is 00:32:52 That's another one where they're like, oh, on Apple TV you can watch a director's cut. It's like I already had a director's cut. It's funny to me that they keep giving Ridley Scott a history movies when he's like. I don't care about history at all He does not give a shit his attachment to history is so like theoretical. I Don't know how he's still directing the kinds of movies that he directs like
Starting point is 00:33:18 big spectacle thing with lots of special effects and whatnot, it's a It's pretty impressive. I wish he was a, like a war general set of a filmmaker. Cause he probably get things taken care of. He would absolutely blow shit up. I went with a movie called not quite human. Can only imagine what that's about. Uh, the next letter D this is another one, uh, Jeff, that, uh, you know, I'm
Starting point is 00:33:44 not holding out hope for you on this one, but let's see what you got. Deep rising. I like treat Williams. Yeah, tree Williams was the star. Nice. Yeah. Nice. Yeah. I remember that movie. I went with a movie that when I tell people about it, it's, it's, it's not pleasant. It doesn't be, but it does not make people happy to hear about that. This movie exists.
Starting point is 00:34:19 Has anybody heard of demon seed? No, not, not, not in this context. Demon seeds, a movie from the seventies that features a robot that, um, uh, forces itself on a woman who then has the robot's baby. Oh my God. Yeah. forces itself on a woman who then has the robot's baby. Oh my God. Yeah. And at the end of the show today, I'm gonna say I've been doing the last line
Starting point is 00:34:51 of a motion picture at the end of every episode. And at the end of this episode, I'm gonna say the last line for the movie, which is spoken by the child. And it's the result of this robot and person coupling. Oh, I can't wait. Nice tease. But what a insanely creepy movie from the 70s. The robot is called Proteus for.
Starting point is 00:35:21 Oh man. Yeah. Okay. I a I I fucked it up. I said a I. That's the answer. To the next letter. I don't know. Yeah. So, Bo, what's your guess? We are on back to a or is this I am sorry. This is I'm sorry. Yeah, I was I jumped around a.
Starting point is 00:35:42 A. and he's like he's given me the answer and I still think I don't know it. This is vaguely robotic. I don't think this is quite enough. Yeah, it's sort of alien. the the the the is now. Why is the last letter and we're going to Ellery. Okay, this is a strange guess. Or maybe it's not. I think I love it. But I'm thinking like, I don't know, technology, cyber, invention, and this is sort of the opposite of that, but I'm going to say year one. And this is sort of the opposite of that, but I'm going to say year one
Starting point is 00:36:48 That is the opposite of science and technology theme but my theme today was movies with computers robots and technology. So office space squeaks in there because of all the, you know, that they kind of pull the whole scheme by using the office computer system to, to steal from the company. Um, and they also smashed the shit out of some computers and stuff.
Starting point is 00:37:23 and they also smash this shit out of some computers and stuff. I figured that out and but couldn't think of any titles. That's why it got deep rising. Right. Well, also some of the best known movies with robots and technology running back just don't happen to line up with the letters from a cyber Monday. And that's how hard it was for me to come up with titles is for the letter Y. I couldn't do it with anything else that I thought was appropriate. So I just wrote, you've got mail a second time. Oh, I was. He's happened. And I was like, wait, no, he already.
Starting point is 00:37:56 No, if you knew that about me, you might have. Yeah, I didn't know you were a cheater. I'm sorry. Yeah, no, I'm definitely a cheater. But everybody, the three of you all had an equal chance I'm sorry. Yeah, no, I'm definitely a cheater but everybody the three of you all had an equal chance of taking advantage of my my ways and It doesn't matter because we got another game and I've even devised a way to make sure that this game doesn't doesn't have a tie We're gonna have one winner today
Starting point is 00:38:23 And we'll play that right after these words. We'll be right back. We are back. I'm just scribbling down on my notes that nobody won the first game or I should say everybody won because you all made it through the whole game. We just didn't match me. So the game we're going to play to determine it all today is a game that I call the little search engine that could. Today I typed a word that's almost more like a boat. I typed in a word today into the search engine on IMDB. Then I wrote down the top 11 movies that had that word in the title. You're going to take turns guessing
Starting point is 00:39:17 movies with that word in the title. You'll each ultimately get three guesses. And every time you get one that's in the top 11 you'll get points for it number one movies worth 11 points the number 11 movie is worth one point this making sense Ellery um can you say it one more time it's called the little searches that once they tell you the word it'll probably make more sense to you but this is going to be the order it's going to go Jeff then Ellery then Bo and like I said you'll each get three
Starting point is 00:39:58 guesses so I know a lot of guests on the show like to kind of talk through their answers but you want to be careful not to, you know, reveal more than one at a time so that the other players who can hear you might steal. But the word that appears in many movie titles, as it turns out, we're looking for the 11 most popular titles today, according to the algorithm on IMDB, the word is you. Not me, but you.
Starting point is 00:40:32 Why, oh you. And no yours, no the word young, it's just the word you. Why, oh you. You have to think of movies That have that word in the title Jeff You're up first Man, what's your first guess?
Starting point is 00:40:56 Okay There was a that one last year was people talked about a lot anyone, but you People talked about a lot Anyone but you That is number one on the list there's no there's still talking about it because you know, Cindy Sweeney and Glenn Powell have this thing where you know every other week The other ones got a movie coming out or something when they go out to a beach and take some pictures
Starting point is 00:41:25 but like hearing about them all the time and their romantic comedy together anyone but you is Is number one on the list of Jeff hot out of the gate with 11 points this feels rigged. Oh my god. I wasn't even sure that was the right title No, you really took a swing at it and it really is the number one most searched movie with the word you in the title, but there's 10 other ones, plenty more points to be awarded. So Ellery, what's your first guess?
Starting point is 00:42:02 Well, Anyone but you was my First guess that was like you were ready with that one. Did you see that movie? I saw a bunch of the trailers Together and said I've seen it. Yeah. Well, I also remember it being like a big dealed. I guess you could say oh, yeah Yeah, lots of memes and lots of it was such a Not the whole thing wasn't a waste of time, but it was just one of those movies where Yeah, I was just sitting there at points thinking like this is I don't care. What's gonna happen in the scene I just could just move on there's one scene where she's like trying to get something That's he's he's asleep and she has to crawl over him to get something and they turn it into this whole ten-minute Lucille ball
Starting point is 00:42:52 You know acrobatic thing where she's like trying to not wake him up And it was just like I didn't come to this for the slapstick comedy I don't know why they thought that's what I was looking for. I feel like that you really sort of have a switch to my fears that I missed something and not seeing it. But I feel like sometimes you can see a trailer and you're like, yeah, that's probably the whole movie. Yeah, I just I you know, I think I'll see a lot of good work from both of those actors. But that movie was just it just felt like, you know, it felt like something that Julia Roberts and George Clooney would have done together so they could get a nice vacation. Take it to paradise. Yeah, so like that. Okay, my fingers at any specific movie.
Starting point is 00:43:40 But when George Clooney like got his his nose in the politics this last year I was just sitting at home going you're in ticket to paradise that movie is so so anti-intellectual it's insane I also heard I mean this is just gossip but I heard that a one of the sort of like Democratic young sort of media people helped George Clooney ghost write that letter Yeah, yeah, no, I heard that too. Like yes speech writer writing is Oh my god, okay, so
Starting point is 00:44:16 Okay, so my guess is it's not I'm worried because it's not a common movie, but I think it has enough staying power that it might still be in top 11 But my guess is catch Me If You Can. Catch Me If You Can is number seven on the list. Wow. You're on the board with five points. I love that movie. Um, Bo? Man, that was that was, that was my next one. Hillary's. That is a great film. Um, I'm gonna
Starting point is 00:44:43 go with I think also has staying power and I always think of it because it's partially shot in and around my hometown. But 10 things I hate about you. Well, that's starting around your hometown. Well, I guess it does take place in Washington, right? Yeah, they the high school, like the famous Heath Ledger walking down singing is High school in Tacoma and then the throwing like the paint scene is Gasworks Park
Starting point is 00:45:17 Is it but they're supposed to be in Seattle, right? Yes, I think No, I'm pretty sure it's noticeably in Seattle. Yeah. Number 11 on the list, that's why I made it 11 titles because I had to get that one in there because it's possibly in like my top three Shakespeare adaptations of all time. Hell yeah. All of my favorite Shakespeare adaptations are in modern dress as it turns out. Okay, so that's worth one point for bonus. It's not a lot, but it's, you know, there's still plenty of points available.
Starting point is 00:45:59 We're back to Jeff for his second guess. He's just not that into you. Um, number six on the list. Yeah. Roar. Roar. Yeah. They like the Charlie lion over there.
Starting point is 00:46:22 Um, that's worth six points and I know I saw that movie. I definitely saw that movie. I was friends with the dude who wrote co-wrote the book that ended up becoming that movie. But couldn't tell you hardly anything that happens in it. Ben Affleck is emotionally unavailable. I remember that. That doesn't narrow it down, right? And Drew Barrymore was lovesick like she just felt would fall in love with anybody.
Starting point is 00:46:59 And again, again, anyone remember this movie? Where did it take place? Because there was all kind of like couples that like they know all the characters. Is Jay Valentine's Day? Is Jay Berrushel in that? Is he one of the leaders? I think so. It's that easy to confuse with Valentine's Day.
Starting point is 00:47:18 That's a good point. It's probably set in Santa Barbara or something. Yeah, I think it is. It might be the Bay Area because that's where one of the writers of it is from. It could be New York also though, actually now that I think about it. It's probably New York because now I'm like, don't Ben Affleck and Jennifer Aniston get like
Starting point is 00:47:41 an apartment together and they're arguing about how to decorate it I Don't I don't know You brought it up Jeff Yeah Wasn't it based off of a comedian, but wasn't it that's what I'm saying yeah Yeah, yeah yeah I was you know where I came up we sort of came up together and did lots of shows together in San Francisco and then he ended up moving to LA and you know off of that book he would go he went on Oprah a couple of times and Oprah liked him so much that he ended up getting like a daytime talk
Starting point is 00:48:25 show like a vice love love relationships kind of talk show but he also was sort of like but that's not my thing at all so it was a uh it was an interesting experiment. Okay it's Ellery's turn again? Um okay another one that I think is is probably too old to make the list but might have cultural It's Ellery's turn again um Okay another one that I think is is probably too old to make the list, but might have cultural permanence PS. I love you Starring the great Gerard Butler as the corpse Yes, right he's the husband he's the husband who dies at the beginning. Yes, he is. I just watched Just Like Heaven, which is like PSI Love You but bad.
Starting point is 00:49:09 Where it's like Mark Ruffalo and Reese Witherspoon who's supposed to be dead. Yeah. But there's no ghosts in PSI Love You, it's just she forms a club with a bunch of other ladies who are sad about things. Oh yeah. I guess it's a memory. Yeah. I think Kathy's a memory. Yeah. I think Kathy Bates walks away with that one. No, I think it's like, I think we get to know him as her husband a little bit, and then suddenly he dies. And then the sort of-
Starting point is 00:49:35 And then he writes her the letters. And that's like- She finds old letters or something, right? I think he knew that he was going to die, not to spoil it. He was going to die. He dies in the beginning. Letters or something right? I think he knew that he was gonna die not to spoil it He knew and he writes her like a bunch of letters to read like throughout the first year that he's gone And then like I think the movie if I remember currently ends on the last letter. Oh Yeah, and Gerard Butler's in it the den of thieves guys Yeah, the White House is down guy
Starting point is 00:50:10 This has fallen 300 That one movie with Katherine Heigl, okay, so I'm sorry to say that Yes, I love you didn't make the make the cut for some reason the people aren't treating it like it Classic It will have this weird reckoning with Hillary swank that I don't understand oh No, that's 13 going on 30 Which is
Starting point is 00:50:46 Like watching it now. It's just like what is this she's in an adult body, but she's 13 years old Yeah, and and we're the only ones that know it so the way men treat her. It's just oh, it's so bizarre You know Ruffalo is pretty much a gentleman, but he's still He could still can't he tell that she seems like she's got the mentality of a 13 year old He doesn't see like she's in her 20s anyway Bow I Feel like this is boating poorly for me because every movie I can think of is very old Bo day I think
Starting point is 00:51:32 I'm gonna go with that thing that you do Now see that is a great great example of a title that should be on this list That's the kind of that's the level you're playing out here is it should have been a correct answer I think is around 15 or 16 on the list darn and a great great song Just that movie just does not work if that song if you're not you know convinced that that song is not only Something that would be a hit on the radio, but is also something you could tolerate hearing seven or eight times over the course of the film. It's so good. You got to hear it so many times that you want to. It's such a good movie.
Starting point is 00:52:16 IMDB has fucked us up. They dropped the ball. Any band that's a one-hit wonder can really relate to it's still fun that you have just one song that whenever you launch into it, it makes a whole room full of people happy. You know, like they got they got at least a thing to that. I guess in the movie, the band just swells apart completely after their one hit. But great answer bow We got to get a winner here and Jeff is Certainly poised to take it. It's possible to beat him at this point, but
Starting point is 00:52:55 Let me double check the math know it is impossible for The Jeff let's see what if you can nail one more on the list But Jeff let's see what if you can nail one more on the list Dave James Bond you you only you only live twice I Love how you try so hard to sound like it's just a wild guess It's number five on the list Hey, right. Yeah, you you three for every one of your answers has been on the list that was worth seven points so you have way too many points I'm gonna give some of your points to
Starting point is 00:53:37 bow and some of your points to Ellery that's why I mean Bo deserves a few for that thing you do right he really does he deserves Definitely deserves more than some fucking James Bond movie Doesn't have any any relevance today. That's the other thing about that thing you do the little piece of trivia I like to drop is that a Tom Hanks his character in the film. He's like there, you know, he discovers the band and starts to put out their records. He's, his character is gay.
Starting point is 00:54:12 Yeah, the director's cut of that is actually one of the few directors cuts that is better. Cause you liked being that he's gay. Like you thought that it added to the film. Well, I just think that it's like, it's a little bit more overt in the director's cut and in the theatrical, it's like implied maybe. Yeah, you'd never know. He's just more like typical, like a man of his age and stature in that time
Starting point is 00:54:40 period, people would always be going, why aren't you married? Why where's your girlfriend? Yeah, that would just happen. So there's like a little bit of that I think but I just like hanging out in that work like hanging out with those people you know so like adding an extra 25 minutes to it or whatever doesn't bother me at all it's I enjoyed it it's a great cast and the door can't hit Charlize Theron and the ass fast enough for me because I just hate how she behaves the whole time Okay Ellery
Starting point is 00:55:08 Just for fun. Let's see if you can get another one here um Can I pitch you to oh I love it okay, so my the first one I'm thinking of again They're like so old. Maybe I'm just not not up to them any movies, but I'm thinking stuck on you oh Maybe I'm just not up to it on any movies, but I'm thinking stuck on you. Oh yeah. That's a, that's a good answer, but did not make the list. And then I'm also thinking, thank you for smoking. It's another good one. Great movie. Really liked that movie. It really, uh, the pace of it's pretty, uh,
Starting point is 00:55:38 pretty incredible. It doesn't have any boring parts. I thought, I really thought I would write man, uh right man uh or you know his son rather right wait which right man is it i think that's jason i think jason jason right yeah i think jason rightman like came out of the gate his first few movies i was like this guy's gonna always be one of my favorite directors and then for whatever reason he made uh labor day with j Josh Brolin and Kate Winslet, which is like, like so wildly not like anything he'd done before. So sorry, that's also not to make the list. But I love talking about it. Bo, do you have one last guess? I have one last guess. To be honest, I don't even know if I've seen this full movie, but I feel like it was like
Starting point is 00:56:25 Memed a lot when I was growing up. I know what you did last summer. Oh, yeah, that's a really good one and Making it either as a film or a series I forget which I think it's a series maybe But did not make this particular list Quickly I'll tell you what did make the list because we're just perfectly out of time at this point Number 10 was an actual oldie called you can't take it with you Number 9 is a movie. I guess maybe people are looking it up because it's a more recent movie with with Elliot page called close to you I Haven't seen it, but I bet you it's an interesting movie. I can't believe Jeff didn't come up with this one
Starting point is 00:57:22 Just because it's just a classic ridiculous movie, and we were even talking about Mark Ruffalo Now you see me I'm a sucker for any magic movie oh my god it's so cool Bert Wonderstone finally broke me on I used to think I like any movie with magicians but that was really rough number four was a movie with Amelia Clark called me before you sounds like a weepy Kevin Bacon was in number three you should have left which is like a kind of a horror movie sort of stalker kind of deal I think and then number two was a recent popular streaming motion picture that went
Starting point is 00:58:12 straight to streaming called the idea of you so I thought I'd have the way it was good yeah you even thought it was expected I kind of as a joke and then I was like okay yeah same so but we all didn't remember the title because I certainly when I saw it on the list, I was like, oh yeah, I saw that. But great job. Jeff Tay is our winner. Once again, he's back in the Soul Champion seat. Jeff, what would you like to plug? champion seat. Jeff, what would you like to plug? So I assume he has something to do with it. Just bother Billy Wayne Davis on the socials. If you want to find this, this show in Denver. Yeah. I'll post it as soon as he does. Right.
