Starting point is 00:00:00 Doug hates candy wrappers screening baby sticky seeds with 50 as a pop more kernels in his teeth. There's still not one that he won't see because Doug loves movies. Hey, hey, hey, everybody. My name is Doug and I Love Movies. This is Doug Loves Movies recording on Wednesday afternoon, September 3rd, 2025, but releasing on Monday, day, September 8th. So if you're in the New York area, come see Douglas movies tonight at the Grammarcy Theater. That's right. We're back and it's going to be beautiful. I posted on socials who the guests are going to be, but I'm always afraid they're going to, you know, drop out later. So just come to the show. I think you'll have a nice time. My guest today are a nice
Starting point is 00:00:55 time if i do say so myself we've got three returning champs here to defend their titles it's brandon college chad opitz and justin thompson hello hello how do you know you know i love it when it comes together an all-male show i think that's what the people need i think it's uh of course brother important to have men on podcasts say in their opinion nobody else is doing it nobody no no no innovative we're so special uh well let's meet uh my guess individually and alphabetically by first name which in this case is the same he is back after a recent win it's brandon collins how's it going man what's up everybody how y'all doing out there in podcast oh you know i think they're probably i can't speak for them um let me ask you this brandon was it a good
Starting point is 00:01:55 summer for movies because I know you probably saw most of the summer film was it a good summer? I thought of it was fine, you know, there were some nice surprises there like the weapons, but at the same time I knew Zach Craigor was probably going to some cool but there wasn't anything that
Starting point is 00:02:11 really like... Yeah, that barely made the wire for a summer movie you know, come out until August exactly like when I think about the middle of summer it's very like, you know, I did enjoy Fantastic Four and like Superman and F1 and stuff like that, but it's not like I'm racing to see them again,
Starting point is 00:02:29 you know what I mean? Like, so it's fine. I'm glad that people were going back to the movie theaters, but I was really hoping this could be a return to form. And it sounds like you're in the fall. We're not going to get some of the best, unfortunately. So 2025 is going to be a weird year, I think. Oh, really?
Starting point is 00:02:47 All right. Because, you know, of course, the Oscar prognosticators are going wild about certain. things that are happening. And so I have a maybe somewhat rosier outlook on the rest
Starting point is 00:03:03 of the year. I think, you know, I was just on a, on the Bennington show this morning and we were just talking about the, you know, this year so far. And I don't think it's been a bad year for movies, but I don't think it's been
Starting point is 00:03:19 exceptional either. Yeah, everything's just been fine. Like, Jurassic World like huge improvement over the past two but like there's still just whatever yeah there's moments they didn't need to do this but there's also some really cool moments from like that's probably one of the coolest sequences in the whole franchise so it's very conflicted like in a lot of these big blockbuster movies absolutely but at least it wasn't a total whiff I'm tired of those
Starting point is 00:03:42 uh I would gives me hope for you know because they're going to keep making them so I might as well might as well get with the program and just hope that they continue to get better he is back after a recent win. Chad O'Pitts. Hello. Hi, man. How are you doing, Doug?
Starting point is 00:04:01 I got a question for you. Yes, sir. So you've seen Showdown in Little Tokyo? Oh, baby, have I? Because when that movie came up at a recent movie interruption where you were one of the guest interruptors, you were a strong advocate for it, but for some reason the crowd didn't go for it. the fools yeah and then not to mention did they not go for but they also you know they missed out
Starting point is 00:04:29 on uh the guy wasn't lying the guy who brought that movie uh because he brought it back uh he brought it back to the show last night and uh it actually got chosen good and i cannot argue with him saying that that one particular line in the movie is what the greatest hilarious greatest movie of all movie line of all time it's so good yeah and we don't we shouldn't spoil it we should let them watch
Starting point is 00:04:55 showdown a little Tokyo and find out what else and it's also better in context 100% you know because it's one of those it's kind of like it doesn't work through the whole movie but they try to make him cheeky like he says little quips after he you know fuck somebody up
Starting point is 00:05:11 mm-hmm it's a brisk 79 minutes long it's so it's just so fun I, you know, I was really happy that the guy brought it back, and this time we picked it, because we all, it had something for everybody, you know, it's got drugs and boobies walking around, you know, naked men, naked men that are heavily tacit and muscular and bad guy with a scar, a scar on his face, the bad guy, how great is that? Oh, yeah. And he's the bad guy from Mortal Kombat, isn't he? Yeah, I bet he is. I bet he is. You know, Dolf Lungred's best performance possibly.
Starting point is 00:05:55 Maybe because he wasn't also directing, maybe he was able to find it. And he's having, he can tell he's having fun. He is, but he was like trying to act like he was having fun in that other one we saw and command performance. And it was rough. Yeah. All right. He is back after a recent win. It's Justin Thompson.
Starting point is 00:06:16 you all have the same intro Wow it's an honor to be here among champions you know what can I say like that's brother last time I was on Doug described the game by saying any fool could win and
Starting point is 00:06:32 you did it yeah anybody can win you know in multiple choice but I favor I think the person who actually knows some of the answers has a better chance but it's still you never know
Starting point is 00:06:47 what question you're going to get it's like when I play I tried a bunch of times when Trivial Pursuit came out a million years ago I was one of those people that tried to have a night
Starting point is 00:06:58 where people come over and we play that game and nobody would know the answers so many of the questions and myself included and so I you know I feel the frustration when you don't know
Starting point is 00:07:09 but at least going into this you know it's just going to be movies you know we got to bring a scene it the DVD game back. That's more my speed. You know, I love getting the visual, like, you'll see part of a scene. Oh, yeah, it brings it back.
Starting point is 00:07:28 But don't the questions, aren't they really, like, don't they really spoon feed it to you? Like, they give you every possible clue in the question. I think so. I mean, I can't remember. That's why I say, let's bring it back. Yeah. That's a game truly any fool could win.
Starting point is 00:07:44 yeah truly i don't know is it because it's probably also multiple choice in bed um all right one question for you justin how do you think you're going to do today against these two well you know i don't want to say i'm intimidated um i have a middle level of confidence very appropriate being realistic but you know i'm going to do my best that's all i could ever ask if you and um you know i looked i checked with the vagus odds and uh the bookmakers have you at 10 to 1 what yeah and brandon and chad are both practically even money so the hell yeah he's running bets on this yeah i would love better get them in now you know you can spend all after we take crypto whoa
Starting point is 00:08:44 all right before we play some games today i would like each one of you as we do each episode we'd like each of you to recommend one movie so we'll start with brandon could be recent could be you know old school whatever yeah i'm actually gonna recommend uh because the wife and i watched it the other night uh karate kids legends which is completely different than the movie that was advertised but the young kid ben wing who plays lee is awesome like the lead kid was really really good. And that was worth the hour of 40 minutes I spent watching it. And also Joshua Jackson
Starting point is 00:09:20 Pacey from Dawson's Creek was randomly at it. So I had a good time. Wait, so that's the one that, when did that come out? Like in May? Yeah, I came on a few months ago, but like Ralph Machio and like Jackie Chan are barely in it. It's not spoiler to say like, they're barely in it. No, I kept hearing that. That's why I didn't see it. Because I was just like,
Starting point is 00:09:38 what is this about? Like what? I don't even understand how those two guys can be in the same world you know yeah i mean it kind of works but like when they started teaching a kid it didn't really make sense it like didn't make sense that like go get ralph macho from california to bring him to new york to teach this kid who already knows how to fight it was kind of bizarre yeah i i enjoyed it i i'm smiling the whole top but it's not as good as like i didn't i didn't go through the whole thing but i saw enough of cobra kai to appreciate that like it's loved it's beloved for good reason
Starting point is 00:10:12 is a good show. Yeah, Cobra Kai kind of wore out as welcome a little bit. I think it went a bit too long. But like it still fits within that. I think there was opportunities to integrate a little bit more if I'm being honest with you. But yeah,
Starting point is 00:10:24 Kobe Kai has some badass kid fighting though. That second season bad. Oh, yeah. Hey, that's the best kind. It's awesome. All right. So it's called Karani Kid,
Starting point is 00:10:36 colon, legends. Yes. All right. Colon legends. It besides the colon. guys yeah you gotta say colon full title yeah i you know because i mean i guess it could be karate kids legends without a colon but that sounds more like a i don't know like a medical that sounds like
Starting point is 00:10:54 their avengers movie yeah uh all right chad what are you got for us this time i know you always bring the heat i'm i'm going with one um you know how in la they do a lot of retrospective like anniversary screenings of movies and stuff uh-huh 25th anniversary 30th there's a movie I really love, and I was hoping they would do one for it this year, because it's the 30th anniversary of this really great 90s teen movie called Angus. And I've seen no scheduled screenings of it, and I absolutely love that movie. And I would love to see it in the theater with a cool
Starting point is 00:11:29 crowd. And so hopefully by the end of the year, that happens, but I haven't seen anything yet. But that's a really, really good 90s teen flick with a really great soundtrack, if you like 90s music. Yeah. And There's even a few chains that are really digging in across the country into these anniversary screenings of things. Like, Jaws just made, Jaws just came in number two for the weekend. Yeah, that's crazy. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:11:54 For, you know, being the 50th anniversary. So, like, there's going to be a lot of that kind of business going on, because any time you can squeeze some more box office cash out of something that already exists. Somebody already owns it. All they got to do is do a little advertising, put it out there. You know, get the stars to maybe go do some talk shows or talk about it on the internet. But Angus, I remember it being a, you know, a pleasant experience, a good movie. But looking at the name Angus, I'm wondering, do they ever do a joke about his name being so similar to Anus?
Starting point is 00:12:32 No, I don't think they do. I think they do. They're children. Why wouldn't they do that? They do. It seems like it's right there. They did the classic, like they call him a cow or whatever, but, you know. They don't do the ain't it.
Starting point is 00:12:43 That's kind of, that's true. You'd think he gets bullied in the movie. That's part of the plot, actually. That's what I'm saying. Like, what kind of creative bullies are avoiding the thing that's right there? You know, oh, no, I'm better than that. Yeah, no. Those bullies would definitely go for the colon legends, you know.
Starting point is 00:13:01 But I'm bullying. I like to punch up. Mm-hmm. All right. Angus. Karate Kids Legends. This sounds like, uh, Got a real teenager thing going on here, Justin.
Starting point is 00:13:14 Are you going to have a question about Angus? Oh, please. Angus had the actress that was the daughter, like the sister in Jurassic Park, right? Because I had a huge crush on her at the time. Ariana Richards. Okay, cool, cool. That was Anus's sister? No, no.
Starting point is 00:13:29 It says like, it's anus's love interest. Oh, it's his crush. It's this big crush in the movie. Yeah. She's great in it. She's actually got a pretty good character, too. Oh, okay. Who, what's, name an adult figure in the age.
Starting point is 00:13:45 Oh, George C. Scott's in it. George C. Scott plays his grandpa and Kathy Bates is his mom. It's got a really good cast. And Rita Moreno shows up as like a dance instructor. Well, that's fun. But those other two are two of the most frightening actors. Yeah. George C. Scott's really likable in it.
Starting point is 00:14:03 He's great. I like when he's likable. It's pretty entertaining. It doesn't happen very often. No. He's him and Charlie Talbert, who plays Angus, have a really good rapport together. All right.
Starting point is 00:14:14 Well, you're getting me on the anus train, that's for sure. Justin. I want to talk about a movie. I think thematically will bridge the two that have already been discussed. New York Ninja. Whoa. Yeah, baby. What is New York Ninja?
Starting point is 00:14:38 All right. New York Ninja is wild. It's crazy that this movie exists. It was filmed in 1984 and then scrapped. And then in 2021, it was finally released. This company took the unfinished footage that had no audio and made it into a movie without storyboard or script or anything. And then they redubbed a bunch of dialogue and cut it into a movie. So it's this 80s martial arts, you know, action, adventure movie.
Starting point is 00:15:07 And it's pretty wild, pretty entertaining. Is it good? I don't know. But it's just crazy that it exists. And it probably has the wildest set of knockers that have ever appeared on screen. Well, I'm sold already. So, yeah. Oh, because they like somebody uses them to fight or something?
Starting point is 00:15:28 Yeah, yeah, exactly. Oh, my God. Not me ever. Oh, my God. That's so funny. But yeah, it's really crazy that this was preserved and then cut into an actual movie, yeah, so where can we find it? Where is it?
Starting point is 00:15:46 I don't know. Well, a friend of mine had the DVD, but I'm sure it's available somewhere. I would think so. You know, people can go out there and look for it. Yeah. I'll tell you right now. Oh, I got the, I already got the information from my producer.
Starting point is 00:16:05 All right. It's on canopy. What the hell is canopy? it's like if you ever had a bowl of peas that was so stupid it's hey canopy it's just another one of those fucking it's one of
Starting point is 00:16:26 is that a free one or a really cheap one I think it's the one where you can get a free membership with your library card if your library participates because I used to have it through the Brooklyn Library and then I think their
Starting point is 00:16:43 deal with them ended but others it's out there go find it. Search it out. This movie's great. Go to the library too while you're at it. We got to see these knockers. I don't know.
Starting point is 00:16:57 I'm scared. Well those are some great wrecks. We got to take a break. BRB. Today's episode is brought to you in part by You guessed it, Shopify. The origins of Douglo's movies

Starting point is 00:18:51 Go to Shopify.com slash DLM, Shopify.com slash DLM. Back to the show. We are beat. And the first game that we are going to play today is called screaming or conjuring. What is this game about? What is he talking about? Well, this is honor, in honor, of the fact that a friend of the show named Clark Collis has a new book out. His book is called Screaming and Conjuring, and it's about modern horror.
Starting point is 00:19:34 and how it's here to stay. And I recommend it to anyone who likes the Scream franchise or the Conjuring franchise or scary movies or movies in general. And I'm going to give away a copy tonight at the Gramer Seat Theater. I got an advanced copy, but it's also now in stores. So here's how this game works. I'll name a fun fact, a fact, more like a fact than a fun fact. And then you will guess if it's, if that fact relates to the original scream movie or the original conjuring or both. All right?
Starting point is 00:20:24 not the franchise as a whole both of those movies have made so many and they keep coming this is the original movie Brandon gets to go first if he misses and Chad gets a shot and if Chad misses
Starting point is 00:20:42 and Justin you know there's only three options all right I'll pay attention this time so this is where this is where Justin shines if he pays attention yeah Yeah, but I don't know. I'm interested to see how this plays out.
Starting point is 00:20:59 Brandon, are you ready? I'm so ready, I think. Okay. The first fact, directed by a man, scream, conjuring, or both? Both. That was too fast for comfort. I think you'll be good at this, Brandon. Sorry.
Starting point is 00:21:28 These are supposed to be hard, but that was the correct answer. The West Craven directed Scream and James Juan directed... The First Conjuring, that's right. Which is what should be called now. They should go back and change the title. The first conjure. Just like the Thunderbolts. All right.
Starting point is 00:21:52 Chad How are you doing? I'm good All right You got to start with this next one See if you could put a point on the board Written by a man Scream or conjuring are both written by a man
Starting point is 00:22:13 Okay I know I know scream was written by a man But was the conjuring I'm going to say both you're going to both that is incorrect Justin you got a 50-50 on your hands
Starting point is 00:22:43 what are you going to do with it I'm going to say Brandon, how would you like a free point? I'll take it because I know the answer. Just to make it official, what's the answer, Brandon? Scream. Yeah, Scream is correct. Kevin Williamson wrote it.
Starting point is 00:23:13 Do you know the names of the two people who wrote Conjuring? I do not. I'm a big scream fan, so that's why I know everything. Yeah. Oh, you know all the scream shit. Well, it's a good thing that this is just the first game today. And it's, you know, it's not going to, you know, it's not going to be that big of a deal if you win it. I usually blow my load pretty early on the show. So it works out.
Starting point is 00:23:37 It's par for the course. Yeah, the conjuring was written by, this is a trick question, Justin, because it was written by two men. and the fun fact was written by A man Oh Yeah Oh boy Oh shit
Starting point is 00:23:59 It was being goofy It was written by It was written by a couple of brothers I like how you did a goofy voice To say that I was being goofy That was fun Yeah This guy's an idiot
Starting point is 00:24:14 Hey, what's going on with the roguer Hey, what's going on with the rogue-like tavern? Oh, we got a show there on Thursday tomorrow. All right, well, we'll do an official plug at the end, but I'm just worried about, I see the Instagram posts about how, like, that it's a struggling operation. I mean, I saw that just yesterday, so we'll see. I'll talk to the owner tomorrow, but I think he's,
Starting point is 00:24:41 today there was a good post about it. things are looking positive today. Well, you got me all fired up about Rogue-like Tavern. I know, you've got to go. Unfortunately, this, you know, this episode that we're taping now is going to come out after it's happened.
Starting point is 00:24:54 Okay, it'll be back. Well, that's the attitude. Yeah. I appreciate it. Hell yeah. All right. So I'm just stalling, because Brandon ran away with this thing.
Starting point is 00:25:06 He didn't even have to think about it. He didn't have to, like, think out loud and work through it. Was that the entire game? Well, you know, officially it's the first person of two points wins. Holy Lord, okay. But let's keep playing just for fun. Chad, what do you think of this one? Let me think.
Starting point is 00:25:26 Scream, conjuring, or both has 65 credited cast members. 65? 65. Exactly. Exactly. Exactly credited cast members? I guess on IMDB, it just says exactly how many there are. That seems like it seems like you could go.
Starting point is 00:25:43 through account them if you want to double check but they seem like they're pretty into accurate numbers I don't recall there being that many people in The Conjuring so I'm going to say scream um
Starting point is 00:26:00 see that's the kind of thing that's supposed to happen Brandon is so it kind of works through it a little bit I never was good at show my math out loud and then I get to say incorrect And then Justin, now he's really going to chew on this before making his 50-50 decisions. You know, I could see it being 40 for scream and 25.
Starting point is 00:26:31 What was the total number again? The number is 65. Just for short of what it should be. All right. I get But Chad's saying And I probably would have won with that I feel like I just have to say both
Starting point is 00:26:53 I don't want to but I must I'm obligated It just can't be that there is 65 total For one of these films Well it's it's so you're saying both Like both of these movies have exactly 65 I thought you were adding the both of them together, then I'll just say
Starting point is 00:27:11 it's definitely not both. I'm not adding it. I'm saying that. All right. All right. And which one happened to have? All right. So the one that the one that Chad didn't say. What did you say, Chad? Scream.
Starting point is 00:27:30 And so you think that both Justin, that both don't have 65. Because that's an outrageous number. Yeah, is neither a answer? Condring or both. So if you don't think it's both.
Starting point is 00:27:52 Condering. Say Condering. All right. It's official. You said it. And this is going to blow y'all's minds. What the? Condering has 65 credited cast members.
Starting point is 00:28:05 What the fuck? Yeah. I don't remember being that big of a cast. I know, right? It seems like pretty small, but I guess like every person, you know, every person that walks by
Starting point is 00:28:16 goes, oh, shit, goes, or whatever. Neighbor guy with a flannel shirt. Yeah, it's a lot of, you know, teen, yeah,
Starting point is 00:28:23 teen with hair tie. But this is going to blow your minds even further, though. Scream, the original scream, 64. Oh,
Starting point is 00:28:36 well, ridiculous. The hell? So, Would you guess that, Brandon, that there's that many? I wouldn't have, actually, because both of them would have pretty, they always felt like they had pretty small cast because it's like so contained the story, but it's interesting.
Starting point is 00:28:50 But I guess there's just lots of people wander by and say one thing. You know, news reporters or whatever, the press, you know, just random-ass characters. I mean, I think those numbers are pretty average for a typical feature film. unless it's low budge then they might the average might be more like 30 people but there's a lot of little parts but no little actors
Starting point is 00:29:18 and finally let's just throw this one right to Brandon's not not waste any more time actually let's waste a little bit more time Justin was like every point I can get has to go to Brandon scream or conjuring or both rated R. Both.
Starting point is 00:29:40 Both were rated R. I knew you'd know that, too. But Conjuring is one of those ones that I think in the Conjuring universe there might be a couple PG-13s that have slipped in. I think some of the spinoffs, like the Annabelle movies, I think, are PG-13.
Starting point is 00:29:54 Yeah, where in Scream is just... Yeah, Scream is just flat out R all the time. Oh, yeah. I had to sneak to see that movie the first time. Oh, wow. All right, well, Chad is the winner. I mean, excuse me. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:30:09 Braddon was the winner of our first game, and that means he gets to go first in our second game, and it's not necessarily an advantage. But we'll do that after this break. We'll be right back. Woo. We're back. And, oh, that was a quick one.
Starting point is 00:30:27 And we've got one more game to play. It's a little something that I'm calling, Streep Throat. Whoa. I know, right? Oh, yeah. Man. It's a crass title for a classy game.
Starting point is 00:30:42 Yeah. Yeah, because when it comes to classy dames, Meryl Streep, there's hardly none other, especially in the world of American actresses. If she was British, she would have been a dame by now. But instead she has to settle for damn awesome. So here's how he's getting this crazy game works, because I looked up,
Starting point is 00:31:07 Rotten Tomatoes laid out all of her movies. They ranked all of her movies based on the Rotten Tomatoes score from the critics. So I wrote them down. You're going to take turns guessing
Starting point is 00:31:24 Merrill Street movies that you think would manage to land in the top 10 critically of all of her many films. She's been in 64 or 65 films. I didn't really check on that number. And some of them have been like God-awful, but she's amazing in them. Well, she's always great, but like, yeah, a lot of, a lot of, a lot of, a lot of, a lot of dramas, a lot of, like, she, you know, she's in some comedies that are kind of misfires.
Starting point is 00:31:50 But anyway, the point is. It stays working. That's all I can say. Exactly. And getting Oscar nominations at the most nominations of any, any act, maybe not any actor, but any actress. But anyway, so if you guess the movie, that's number one with the critics, you get 10 points, and then on down the list, number two is worth nine points, et cetera. And then you'll each get three guesses.
Starting point is 00:32:15 We'll go three rounds. And then I'll, you know, add it up and see who prevails for today out of these three incredible champions. That all came to play. you can just hear it in their silence. Yeah. We're pontificating. And even though she's been in so many, like, thinking of three. I know.
Starting point is 00:32:43 Yeah. Oh, exactly. But that's the thing is your memory of the same three. People will take your ones that you're thinking of and then, you know. Well, I have a few, like, outsiders, but, like, I know that they're not good. So that's why I'm like, the top 10. Rod and tomatoes are all not a good movie. Well, that's, we're going to.
Starting point is 00:33:01 We're going to have to struggle with that as we go through. But you never know what's going to pop into your head as you hear the other guesses. So we start with Brandon, and then we're going to go to Justin and then to Chad. Okay. Three guesses each, but, you know, one at a time. So give me your first guess, Brandon. I don't know if this is going to be top ten, but I know that it was, like, universally loved. I love this movie when it came out.
Starting point is 00:33:30 and there's a lot of Oscar nominations. So I'm going to go with adaptation. Her and Chris Cooper out of their goddamn minds. Yeah, and Nicholas Cage is twins. And one of the more subdued Nicholas Cage performances, strangely. At least one of the brothers is pretty chill. Yeah, really crazy, interesting movie. And, you know, I feel like the critics, when it came,
Starting point is 00:34:00 out ate it up and so of course it's on the list and it is number seven okay okay we're on the board seven on the list you're on the board you got four four cute little points
Starting point is 00:34:12 and that's a lot more than Justin has until he makes his first guess well I'll tell you adaptation was going to be my first guess so now I think yeah yeah absolutely
Starting point is 00:34:29 So this risky, but the most recent one I've seen with her in it, the deer hunter. That's the most recent Merrill Street movie you've seen or the one you've seen most recently. That one I'm seeing most recently.
Starting point is 00:34:46 Like you saw it within the last few years. Yeah, the last few months. A few months. Yeah. How did you see it? With my eyes. How did you stumble? into that? Oh, just
Starting point is 00:35:01 a nice family hanging out streaming experience. But I'd love to see it in the theater. Watch the deer hunter with your family. The whole family gathered around. Yeah. Watch people. Yeah, nice.
Starting point is 00:35:14 Shoot themselves in the head. Exactly. It really brings us all together. You know, I Your side of the family or her side? Yeah, my fiancé's family. Yeah, I was just going to say, you are marrying into a bunch of psychopas. If they're sitting around watching the deer hunter.
Starting point is 00:35:37 But yeah, it's from 1970 something, four, maybe later, maybe six. But it is on the list, number five. And it's worth six points. So it's a good thing you just happen to be sitting around with your wife's family. Yeah. And they said, let's watch this. rollicking romp
Starting point is 00:36:00 like wasn't it kind of like rough watching a whole hour long wedding sequence before anything starts to happen yeah I forgot how long
Starting point is 00:36:09 that puppy was you know really so long I've got PTSD from that experience honestly it was it was rough
Starting point is 00:36:16 but well it's one of those movies you're like all right it's great glad to revisit it now I can
Starting point is 00:36:23 put it away for another 10 years or so glad to revisit it yeah it's tough it's tough But it's always, I, you know, I, one, in one way that I really appreciate that movie is it's one of the five movies that John Cazel is in before he died.
Starting point is 00:36:39 And those five movies, it's just like nobody, no actors ever had a better, like, oh, I'm in these five movies. Like, they were all nominated for Best Picture. Wasn't that his last one? I don't know if that was, I don't know the order. Wasn't Dog Day Afternoon his last one? I didn't. No, it came out in 75. Yeah.
Starting point is 00:36:56 This was 78, I think. Okay. Yeah, so that might have been his last one. But just in a few years there, both Godfather's the conversation, Dog the Afternoon and Deer Hunter. Like, that's insane. Yeah. Insane.
Starting point is 00:37:10 Okay. I don't know if anybody watches Big Brother, but the guy in the current Big Brother house reminds me of him. Because he's real weasily and has a mustache. Okay. I'll scope this out because that's a big brother house. Yeah, his name is, Vincent Vinny Vincent
Starting point is 00:37:30 That's a good name for a For a weasel Yeah No he wears like a He's always got a hat on But he's got a nice head of hair But he always has one of those Wool hats on or whatever
Starting point is 00:37:40 And he's got a mustache And he actually twirls it He actually twirls the end of it Yeah And he's like really Friendly but manipulative in the house And he mostly reminds me of those The way he dresses and acts
Starting point is 00:37:55 He reminds me of those weasels in uh roger rabbit oh yeah i gotta see this guy yeah let's kick his ass i like those dudes all right so dear hunters worth six points for just a we've got two players on the board chad this is your first shot okay give us that number one merrill street movie i'm thinking strictly from like critical standpoint i don't know about rotten tomatoes i'm gonna go with Kramer versus Kramer or as I call it Michael Richards
Starting point is 00:38:27 versus Michael Richards. I'm sad to say. Well, very well reviewed. Like there's her top 30, 35 or so movies have good reviews. You know? Like she's got a lot of gotten a lot of positive
Starting point is 00:38:49 feedback. But Kramer versus Kramer, for which She was won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, number 11 on the list. What that hell. Wow. Yeah, you just missed the cut off. I did not see that coming.
Starting point is 00:39:05 Yeah. No, I felt strongly before I started looking at this list, that Kramer versus Kramer would be way up there. All right. Still anybody's game. Oh, man. Brandon. Now I'm shook.
Starting point is 00:39:19 What's your second guess? Oh, my God. that didn't man because the one I want to do I'm very scared of now because I know she was nominated but I know oh man I'm gonna do it and also
Starting point is 00:39:33 yeah I'm gonna do it the devil wears Prada oh yeah let's see what happens but you know making a sequel now as we speak I actually was on this I actually filmed on a sequel
Starting point is 00:39:45 yeah yeah she she looks great by the way for 76 yeah they keep i keep seeing footage of uh you know because they're just filming in the streets of manhattan i guess so they're just uh out there i wonder is it just called devil world's proditude they're not fucking around with a colon that's that's all the everyone was referring to like um and that's their abbreviation on set yeah so i think that's true i don't need a here we go again or or a good one for that movie would be uh what does he say uh
Starting point is 00:40:20 Girder your loins. Yep. Gird your loins, yeah. Gird your loins, gertrter. All right. Don't put a girder in your loins. Number 27. What the hell?
Starting point is 00:40:35 On the list. Yeah. I think her performance is widely admired, but the movie, at the time, people felt it was maybe a little too cookie-cutter formulaic, but I always love it. it. I've always thought it's a good. I loved it. We watched like a month ago. It still holds up. Yeah, I think it's really good. So I'm a little worried about the sequel because I just don't know what would be interesting about, you know, maybe the two women still continue to have like kind of a power struggle at the magazine. I don't really, I'm not really that interested in that. But there will be good, good outfits, I bet. Oh, yeah. Everyone looks fantastic. Yeah, it'll be a real mat gala. All right, Justin. We're back to you. I mean, oh, I'm thinking, I can't remember. I mean, all right, so let's roll a dice here.
Starting point is 00:41:30 This is not going to be in the top 10. I'm not even sure if she's in it. Postcards from the edge. She is in postcards from the edge. And I never thought any of you would guess that. I thought that's one they're going to miss for sure. Is that number one? No, it is number 13.
Starting point is 00:41:48 Wow. Well, it's pretty high. It's pretty far down the list. I'm not even sure if it's 13. I just know it's beyond 12. So, sorry to say, but that was another terrific guess. That is a good guess. That's a deep cut one.
Starting point is 00:42:08 Yeah, that was pretty impressive. Yeah. Is that what Shirley McLean? Yeah, Shirley McLean. And she plays essentially Debbie Reynolds. and Meryl Streep is her, you know, nepo daughter. And, you know, they have issues. Drugs are taken.
Starting point is 00:42:33 You know, it's all based on Kerry Fischer's, you know. Yeah, it's a fun rock. It's fun to watch the family like Deer Hunter. No, Carrie Fisher was good at taking a funny, you know, making it funny that she had so much, you know, fill problems and stuff Chad I'm doing a real Hail Mary here
Starting point is 00:42:53 because I don't know what else all the ones that I'm thinking of I do not think are going to be on there but this is another like critically acclaimed one so who knows Sophie's choice Sophie's choice was very much admired by the critics and that was another
Starting point is 00:43:13 Oscar for I think she won for that one too but unfortunately number 25 on the list I know when you hear the ones that are in the top 10 I think you'll go okay
Starting point is 00:43:31 those seem familiar to me you know some of them but it is it is interesting but also I kind of want to hear from you these ones that you're thinking of and dismissing because you know just because a movie's not
Starting point is 00:43:47 super serious doesn't mean it didn't get good reviews um all right but as still anybody's game this is very exciting bradden this is your final attempt to get a big one it's just this list
Starting point is 00:44:07 is so like my confidence is broken in this because I want to go with an awards contender but then like that blew up in my face and so I'm kind of like did I just go for the movie that I loved that maybe critics didn't care about
Starting point is 00:44:21 I'm gonna go with I'm gonna go with doubt I'm gonna go with the Oscar thing because everyone got nominated for that and you don't get nominations across the board of critics don't like it so I'm going to doubt so that's a very very well thought out conclusion
Starting point is 00:44:40 that doubt should be on there and it is not. What? Oh, my God. What is on this list? Well, that's what I'm saying is, like, her number 30 movie on her list has like 75% on a lot. You know what I mean?
Starting point is 00:44:55 Like, most of her movies are well reviewed. You have to dig a little bit to get to the shit. And, you know, like, one of her worst reviewed movies was that Lions for Lambs with Robert Redford and Tom Cruise. Yeah. And that's like second or third to last on the list. and that movie was pretty lame what number is doubt uh i didn't write them all down but it was
Starting point is 00:45:19 definitely you know it's out of the top 10 when he when he said that i was like oh that's probably yeah no bio davis got nominated for an eight minute scene how was that out of the top 10 all right well wait for what unbaffled too brandon for doubt like everyone like everyone she doesn't have a big part it's true um yeah no it was really good and uh Like I said, it's probably, you know, if it's sitting at like 80% or something on Rot Tomatoes, it could be, you know, still deep into the end of her list. But I'm telling you, no one's going to disagree with number one. I'll give you that additional clue.
Starting point is 00:45:59 So we're back to Justin. Okay. I think I'm starting to run on empty over here. You know, I'm going to be kicking myself in the first. foot for this if I could you one foot kick one the other yeah I guess I didn't think that
Starting point is 00:46:20 far ahead either take your foot out of your mouth and kick yourself in the foot yeah I'm starting to think these critics don't know what they're talking about yeah me too okay I mean you know adaptation and deer hunter
Starting point is 00:46:37 were both in there yeah well they were right about those two because those are two I had in mind as well. All right. All right, I can stall for a few more minutes, right? No, we'll get to it. Let's see. All right.
Starting point is 00:47:02 I'm really drawing a blank. So I just got to also throw a Hail Mary here. I love it. Just name a Meryl Street movie. that's the challenge I can't think of another right now sometimes that's what happens Doug
Starting point is 00:47:18 I got nothing okay I think you got another Citizen Kane I would think while you were sitting through Deerhunter with the in-laws that you would have your mind and wander
Starting point is 00:47:31 thinking about other Merrill Street movies I keep thinking of movies I think she might be in and I okay give me one of those hold on something's got to give as or that's a great one that's a great one you know because you're wrong but i appreciate the feeling that you got that made you think it could be her dion keaton is in that one
Starting point is 00:47:58 okay what about as i'll stop adding in your guesses they're easily confused those two diane and meryl they have similar they both came up in the 70s all right All right, Chad. All right. I'm going to go with, man, I'm going to go with one. Because I failed with my last two, what you were like, critic ones. I'm going to go with one I personally like, and I don't think it's on the list, but I hope it is. Death becomes her.
Starting point is 00:48:27 That is another one that I think in its initial, I think the initial response to it was just kind of, you know, iffy. And then it sort of picked up steam over the years, you know. You know, it made money initially at the box office, too, I think, but it was more of a fan thing than this. But also, probably still certified fresh. It's really amazing how she not only picks good roles for herself, but she's like, a lot of these actors and actresses when they're like trying really hard to win an Oscar, they end up in the most ridiculous movies because they overshoot, you know, it's kind of like what they talk about in Tropic Thunder. And, you know, they, they overdo it in one way or another and then end up looking silly. And that just doesn't happen to Merrill Street. But congratulations.
Starting point is 00:49:25 Justin, you just won. You did it again, buddy. Yeah, good. Wow. The deer hunter. Yeah, six points. You did it with six points. Well, Brandon, thank you for taking adaptation.
Starting point is 00:49:37 Yeah, I worked out okay. But what about Brandon? Do you have another, Merrill Street, just for the hell of it? I'm just going to throw a Mamma Mia because I swear this is the top ten. I'm going to lose my mind. No, that's the thing is it wasn't that well received or was not as well received as all these ones that I wrote down because it's not on the list. But Mama Mia, here we go again, is number 22. It's higher than the original Maramia, which that, to me, is crazy because as sequels go, I thought it was pretty, I thought it was a weak wall.
Starting point is 00:50:15 Yeah. A week wall. Yeah, it was a week wall. Do you have another guest, Chad? It's not on there, but another one that's popping out of my mind. She was in this movie with Jack Nicholson called Iron Weed. Yeah, that's a weird one. But that's not on there.
Starting point is 00:50:34 but it was you know she jack and uh you know jack and merrill both got nominee for oscars for iron weed i watch you so boring they like play homeless people who are just cold miserable and uh it was a bummer she's she's had some you know pretty serious like like i thought silkwood got good reviews because you know that's what share won the oh yeah oh no she didn't win for but that was her first oscar nomination and uh and meryl was it was such a serious movie about a serious topic, and it's 29 on the list. But before I tell you the rest
Starting point is 00:51:12 of the movies on the list, let's go ahead and let Justin do his plugs. What would you like to promote Justin? Well, yeah, just follow me on Instagram. It's Justin Thompson, L.O.L. That would be nice. You can see me post about shows that I'm doing if you're in the New York Areola,
Starting point is 00:51:30 and you can see me promote my podcast there. Right on. And we'll get you back on this podcast, ASAP. Congratulations. Thank you. Yeah. That's it for me. Shush.
Starting point is 00:51:50 Number 10, the movie about the Washington Post with Tom Hanks, The Post. Okay. Pretty good movie. Just a picture of a little bit. Yeah. Yeah, exactly. And then number nine. This is one of the ones where I'm like a little, the most, I question it the most, but, you know, maybe it's really good.
Starting point is 00:52:11 But it's a movie called One True Thing in which Merrill Street, you know, has cancer. So like, you know, heavy cancer drama. The critics went for that. But then number eight, both of box office and critical success, co-starring romantically with the Clint Eastwood, Bridges of Madison. yeah oh okay should have thought of that one yeah and then six i mean seven is adaptation and then number six this is like you got to think outside the box a little bit because uh animation counts oh yeah oh okay oh shit yeah she's a very well reviewed uh number six fantastic mr fox oh man i should said that one okay yeah i like i enjoy that movie that's my favorite west anderson
Starting point is 00:53:03 movie yeah it's it's it's definitely my top uh four best anderson movies maybe three depending on the time of day um number five was dear hunter sorry to PTSD you on that experience uh justin i did it upon my brought it upon myself you know yeah but speaking of traumatic experiences number four is a little movie that started that coined the phrase a dingo ate my baby and it's called The Cry in the Dark
Starting point is 00:53:40 Oh yeah Yeah Where that lady that claimed a dingo ate her baby It's all about the trial Or they're like we don't think A dingo ate your baby and she's like No it didn't go ate my baby She said
Starting point is 00:53:59 Dingo said So, number three, and the reason I said it's makes sense to mix it up with Diane Keaton, number three is a movie where Merrill and Diane are both in stunning black and white photography, and it's called Manhattan. Oh, okay. Yeah, everybody went crazy for that when that happened. I think he'd even won the Oscar for screenplay. number two I'm a little surprised by this one I didn't know it was so well reviewed
Starting point is 00:54:34 I thought it was a good movie but it's Greta Gerwig's take on little women Oh wow She was in that Wow okay Wouldn't have expected that one Yeah I forgot about her that
Starting point is 00:54:46 Yeah she's like Aunt Mamie or whatever Aunt Marmee something like that She's like a bitch She's like an old bitch Who like at one point says something kind of nice to somebody and you're supposed to say, oh, she really has a heart deep down.
Starting point is 00:55:02 She's just an old bitch. The devil wears a bonnet. So, as I was alluding to, I think the number one movie, not only is a great movie, I dare to say it's my favorite Merrill Street movie, and it's light and fun for the most part while dealing with death. Albert Brooks is defending your life. That's number one? Number one, best reviews. I'm actually happy to hear that, but I would not have expected that. I can't think, I couldn't imagine a critic giving that movie a bad review or even a so-so review.
Starting point is 00:55:42 But, you know, the thing about Rotten Tomatoes also is when you see that it's like, oh, that movie's 90% or whatever, that means 90% of critics based on Rotten Tomato's opinion of the review they read, unless a lot of critics, will actually give a score, you know, like three or, you know, three out of five or whatever. But like basically, if a movie gets an okay review, it falls under positive. You know, if it's just like, it was fine, then it falls under positive. And that's why I think that the rankings on there lean towards, you know, feels like there's more movies being certified fresh than not these days.
Starting point is 00:56:22 Yeah, totally. but also you look at the I think it's a little bit of the payola you look at the I don't know about that you look at the popcorn score I think Raj Maddo is making plenty of money without you know having to get that kind of money
Starting point is 00:56:36 but you never know but the popcorn meter or whatever with the public is often fairly close to the to the critics but it's the public that went like right away went day one so it's people people that are seeing a movie day one
Starting point is 00:56:50 are predisposed to liking that movie I also feel So when both the popcorn and the critics are raving about it, initially, at this point, I'm always wary. I'm like, well, I'd just be okay. But anyway, great job, Justin, Chad Opitz. What would you like to promote? Oh, let's, I'm going to be, I'm actually going down to San Diego next week for a gig at the Pallywineco on the September 10th. Oh, I love it.
